Oops: Emmys 2018 Accidentally Omitted ‘Big Bang Theory’ Nomination

CBS Bazinga?
The nominations for the 70th Emmy Awards were announced yesterday. One nominee got left behind, so the Television Academy had to send an email to correct the mistake:
EMMY AWARDS NOMINATION UPDATE
“Voting in the 70th Emmy Awards category of Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series resulted in seven nominees. One of the nominees, The Big Bang Theory’s episode The Bow Tie Symmetry directed by Mark Cendrowski, was inadvertently left off various Television Academy communications platforms during today’s nomination activities.”
Most of the nominations fans see are the big categories — for drama and comedy TV series, and top acting awards. But there are dozens of other more technical nominations, including for writing, directing, choreography, etc.
“The Big Bang Theory” wasn’t on the list of Outstanding Comedy Series nominees this year, and four-time Lead Actor in a Comedy Series winner Jim Parsons wasn’t nominated either. But the guy who directed the Season 11 finale’s big wedding episode was nominated — they just forgot to include him on the extended list.
The mistake came to light via The Hollywood Reporter, when they were checking on a newly implemented rule saying at least one of the comedy directing category’s nominees must be a multicamera show, and at least one must come from a single-camera show:
“The category’s six nominees announced earlier Thursday all came from single-camera shows. After THR inquired why no multicamera show had been nominated, the Academy replied with its statement announcing the nomination for the multicamera Big Bang Theory’s season eleven finale.”
Well done, THR. “The Big Bang Theory” should send you some leftover wedding cake.
“The Bow Tie Asymmetry” actually picked up three Emmy nominations this year. Here are the big nominees for 2018. The trophies will be handed out Monday, September 17 at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.

2017 Emmy Awards Eyeing All-Time Low Ratings
UPDATE: The final Emmy numbers are in: According to Deadline, 11.38 million viewers watched the 69th annual Primetime Emmy Awards, putting it even with last year’s show, which was the all-time low. In terms of the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demo, the 2017 Emmys earned a 2.5 rating, down 10 percent from last year’s record low.
Original post:
Too political? Too predictable? Not enough “Game of Thrones”?
The final numbers are not in yet for the 2017 Emmy Awards, but initial ratings suggest it was the least-watched show to date.
The 8.2 overnight rating from metered market households is down 2 percent from the 2016 event. That puts Stephen Colbert’s show on track to have fewer than the 11.3 million viewers — and 2.8 rating in adults 18-49 — that Jimmy Kimmel’s show got last year, which was then the all-time low.
According to TVLine:
“The Stephen Colbert-hosted ceremony drew 9.6 million total viewers and a 2.2 rating in the fast nationals, dropping a handful of eyeballs and down 12 percent in the demo from what ABC and Jimmy Kimmel woke up to a year ago. (In Nielsen finals, the 2016 kudoscast went on to post 11.3 million total viewers and a 2.8 demo rating, which at the time marked all-time lows.)”
This is following the trend of the past few years, with the Emmys hitting a new low in 2015 and again in 2016. The show did pretty well the previous two years, though, including reaching 17.7 million viewers in 2013, the highest since 2005. (But that 2013 show had one of the strongest lead-ins, THR reported, thanks to football coverage running right up until the start time and bleeding into the 8 p.m. hour by a couple minutes.)
The 2017 Emmys certainly had plenty of competition from NBC Sunday Night Football, as well as the premiere of Ken Burns documentary “The Vietnam War.” But many commenting fans see this ratings drop, and the gradual decline, as a sign of viewers rejecting the politics of modern awards shows.
The final numbers will be in later, to provide a clearer picture of the overall viewers and demo ratings.

Elisabeth Moss Drops F-Bomb in Emmys Speech: Here’s What Was Bleeped
F*ck yeah, “The Handmaid’s Tale” had a great night at the 2017 Emmy Awards.
The freshman Hulu series dominated the Emmys, winning Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for Ann Dowd, Outstanding Writing and Directing awards, and Outstanding Lead Actress for Elisabeth Moss.
Moss had been nominated before as Peggy Olson in “Mad Men,” but playing Offred in “The Handmaid’s Tale” was her first Emmy win.
In her speech, she thanked her mother, saying, “You are brave and strong and smart, and you’ve taught me that you can be kind….” The screen bleeped the rest out, but the live audience loved it.
So what did she say? “That you can be kind while being a f*cking badass.” She was actually bleeped out twice, first for just a lone “f*ck” before the tribute to her mom.

Emmys 2017: Alexander Skarsgard & Bill Skarsgard Completely Won This Week
Two Skarsgard brothers scored big wins this week by playing very bad boys. “Big Little Lies,” and his younger brother Bill Skarsgard topped the box office again as Pennywise the clown in “IT.”
Alex won Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or a Television Movie, defeating these five fine fellows:
- David Thewlis, “Fargo”
- Alfred Molina, “Feud”
- Stanley Tucci, “Feud”
- Bill Camp, “The Night Of”
- Michael K. Williams, “The Night Of”
Alexander, the eldest son of actor Stellan Skarsgard and My Sonja Marie Agnes, thanked his mother for flying out from Stockholm, Sweden to join him at the Emmys — and for giving birth to him, since that was pretty cool, too. He also thanked the amazing women of “Big Little Lies” for making him feel like one of the girls. Nicole Kidman, who played his on-screen wife, looked thrilled for him in the audience.
Meanwhile, Bill’s first “IT” movie is breaking box office records, with “Chapter Two” already in the works. FYI, there are actually eight Skarsgard siblings, including two half-brothers from Stellan’s second marriage. The photo above shows Alex on the far right, with Bill in the middle, and their very talented actor brother Gustav on the left.

Emmys 2017 Viewers Split on Announcer Jermaine Fowler: Awesome or Annoying?
The “Superior Donuts” star Jermaine Fowler as announcer, and fans weren’t sure what to think.
When Fowler was excited about a presenter or winner HE WOULD LET YOU KNOW, which thrilled some fans and annoyed others.
Here are some reactions tweeted during the Sunday, Sept. 17 live show:Whose idea was it to hire the shrill Jermaine Fowler as the Emmys announcer? And how does Superior Donuts qualify him for that? #emmys
— Michael Weinfeld (@mweinfeld) September 18, 2017
Y’all, @jermaineFOWLER is in whatever back room @ the #Emmys ACTING UP!! I can’t tell if him being the announcer is brilliant or disastrous.
— Fletch (@FletchSaidThat) September 18, 2017
Why does this #Emmys announcer SCREAM every thing?
— missamerica2017 (@missamerica2017) September 18, 2017
Someone please tell the announcer that he has a mic. There is absolutely no reason to be shouting. #emmys #stripclubDJ
— Sam Roberts (@notsam) September 18, 2017
Kind of loving @jermaineFOWLER. He should do ALL the awards shows #Emmys
— Hecate@Celebitchy (@HecateAtCB) September 18, 2017
I am loving @jermaineFOWLER announcing at the #Emmys. Especially how he freaked out over @IssaRae, bc that’s totally what I would do, too.
— Megan Sugrue (@megrue) September 18, 2017
The fact that @jermaineFOWLER is TURNING TF UP every time a Black person wins or walks on that stage, is giving me life!! #Emmys.
— ???? damone. (@DamoneWilliams_) September 18, 2017
@jermaineFOWLER is having the time of his life announcing for the #emmys
— Tam’Challa (@yeahTam) September 18, 2017
Surely someone is already crunching the political demographics of the lovers/haters of Jermaine Fowler as emcee. #Emmys
— Rebecca Metz (@TheRebeccaMetz) September 18, 2017
Jack Sussman, CBS Entertainment EVP, music and live events, talked to Deadline about the choice to mix up the announcer role this year:
“What most awards show do is have the announcer locked in a closet reading from a script on cue. What we will do is have Jermaine be an active part of the show. He will be connected with what’s happened on the telecast and what happens next. What we want to do is get a peek behind the curtain in a fun, engaging way.”

This ‘Westworld’ Season 2 Casting Certainly Points to Samurai World
One of the coolest parts of the “Westworld” Season 1 finale is inching closer to full reality for Season 2.As you’ll recall, Maeve (Thandie Newton) gave us a glimpse of SW — presumably Samurai World — in her tour of Delos. So we know there are other theme parks in this world, beyond Westworld, and a new casting for Season 2 further hinted to visiting said world next year.
According to TV Guide, Hiroyuki Sanada (“Lost”) will play Musashi in multiple episodes of “Westworld” Season 2.
As TV Guide noted, the name Musashi might look familiar if you studied the HBO figurines that debuted at San Diego Comic-Con. Turns out, one of them was something of a character spoiler:

— Funko (@OriginalFunko) June 29, 2017
We don’t know anything about the character beyond that visual, but if that doesn’t point to Samurai World, what does?
Back in December, after the end of Season 1, “Westworld” co-creator Jonathan Nolan said he hoped to have Samurai World play out in Season 2.
It’s not clear if Samurai World is also Park 1, but Felix gave Maeve a note that her daughter was in Park 1, so we’re expecting to hear more about that in Season 2. (The original movie “Westworld,” written and directed by Michael Crichton, also featured the parks Roman World and Medieval World.)Evan Rachel Wood (Dolores) told Variety we’ll be seeing a lot more of what Westworld is capable of, and backstory about why it’s there, in Season 2. She also said Season 2 is twice as ambitious as Season 1, and she’s still shocked by the twist and turns:

A teaser for “Westworld” Season 2 played at Comic-Con:HBO has yet to reveal a premiere date, but “Westworld” Season 2 will arrive in 2018.
Meanwhile, “Westworld” Season 1 tied for the most Emmy nominations of 2017 with 22 nods. See how many it picks up when the Emmy Awards air this Sunday, Sept. 17 on CBS.

Emmys 2017 Voter Reveals His Winner Picks, and Hatred for ‘Westworld’
You know those brutally honest Oscar ballots fans love to read? Now you can shake your head at, or agree with, this Emmy voter’s choices. The “Westworld” tied for the most nominations, but it got no love from this anonymous TV Academy member, who shared his thoughts with The Hollywood Reporter.
The Emmy voter called himself an “old white guy,” and said that might be why he doesn’t find comedy nominee “Atlanta” to be funny. Here’s part of what he had to say about the comedy nominees:
“I’m very old-fashioned when it comes to comedies — I like them to be funny — and Atlanta is not funny. It’s very creative — I’m a big Donald Glover fan, I think he’s a huge talent and I wish that show nothing but success — but it isn’t funny, at least to an old white guy like me. I enjoy Master of None more in theory than I do in practice; it’s just a little too preachy and sanctimonious. Similar thing with Black-ish: it’s funny, but I always feel like I’m being scolded and educated, and while I don’t mind John Oliver educating me about obscure things, I don’t need that from a network comedy. It just got a little too up its own ass this year.”
He talked about more comedy nominees, but ultimately gave his vote to “Silicon Valley,” saying it had its best season this year.
When it came to the reality TV category, he admitted he hadn’t seen a lot of them this year, but he had seen bits and pieces over time, and mostly knew what he didn’t like (i.e. too female, too gay):“Top Chef? Is that the one with the cranky chef? [He’s referring to MasterChef’s Gordon Ramsay.] I don’t like him. Anyway, I’m a Food Network guy, so that [Bravo show] doesn’t work for me. Project Runway and RuPaul[‘s Drag Race]? They’re a little too female, a little too gay for me — they’re fine, but not for me. The Voice? was a big American Idol fan all those years, right to the end, and what bugs me about the rip-off shows is that they’re supposedly about finding the next big star, but none of them have produced anyone who actually went on to have a real recording career in the way that, say, Kelly Clarkson or Carrie Underwood did. For me, it came down to The Amazing Race and American Ninja Warrior….”
He ultimately voted for “American Ninja Warrior.”
In terms of Best Drama, he decided to vote for “This Is Us,” after bashing a few of the other nominees, including “Westworld” and “House of Cards”:“I’m the only person I know who has hated House of Cards from the start. It’s always seemed pompous and too impressed with itself, and never has worked for me, but I dip a toe in every season to see if it’s gotten any better, and it’s like, ‘Nope!’ I really tried with Westworld, but while I was watching it — which I did because my wife loves it and I’m a good husband — I kept thinking to myself, ‘This is pretentious bullsh*t.’ I know I’m supposed to be wowed by The Handmaid’s Tale — I liked it, but it was a little too monotone for me, and everything after episode two felt like filling in time. I kind of wanted to vote for Better Call Saul because it hasn’t gotten the love that it deserves — it’s so well-written, so well-acted and not like anything else on television — but I didn’t. I loved Stranger Things — it was creepy and fun, you could just feel the passion that went into it and they really nailed that ’80s sensibility and got some terrific work out of those kids. I loved The Crown even more. I’ve been an Anglophile since The Beatles showed up, and this show was so beautifully presented, like the old Masterpiece Theatre, that I just felt like, ‘Oh, my God, I’m right there with her.’”
He said he voted for “This Is Us” because it was “the most surprising” of all of the nominees. “Every episode was great, everyone can relate to at least one of those characters, and it was the one show this year that we would rush home to watch and talk about; I mean, they just posted a teaser clip from Season 2 and I showed it to my wife and I was in tears.” He also liked that it was a network show, which means more episodes than the others, and “many more opportunities to belly flop.”
Read more of his ballot, and watch the Emmys this Sunday to see if this particular voter’s ballot matches the winners. Here’s the full list of nominees.

Lauren Graham Is Thrilled About Alexis Bledel’s Emmys Win, Too
Alexis Bledel nabbed her first Emmy award this weekend, for her guest starring role on Hulu series “The Handmaid’s Tale.” And while Bledel’s fans were happy for the actress, there was a certain someone else whose excitement for the star was even greater.
Gilmore Girls” costar, tweeted out her joy over Bledel’s big win in a post on Monday afternoon. Sharing a tweet from the Television Academy announcing the actress’s victory, Graham went all-caps to express her happiness for her onscreen daughter.
THIS IS SO AWESOME.
Congratulations and love!
xL https://t.co/gIra0Z09sB— Lauren Graham (@thelaurengraham) September 11, 2017
“THIS IS SO AWESOME,” Graham wrote, adding, “Congratulations and love!”
Though Netflix revival series “Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life” failed to nab any nominations, Bledel wasn’t the only Stars Hollow-adjacent performer to be recognized by the Television Academy this year: Melissa McCarthy — who had a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo in the revival — won the comedy guest starring statuette Sunday night (for hosting “Saturday Night Live,” but mostly, we assume, for her perfect portrayal of former White House press secretary Sean Spicer throughout the season). And Milo Ventimiglia is nominated for best actor in a drama (for “This Is Us”) at next Sunday’s main awards ceremony, too.
While we’re bummed that Graham failed to score a nom of her own (or Kelly Bishop, for that matter — Emily Gilmore would be outraged), we’re glad to see the “Gilmore” love go around. We’ll raise a giant mug of coffee to that.
