Viola Davis Regrets Her Role in ‘The Help’

The Help, Emma Stone, Octavia Spencer, Viola Davis
    DreamWorks

Viola Davis is a role model for so many people, and she holds herself to a high standard.

She is a three-time Oscar nominee — for “Doubt” in 2008, “The Help” in 2011, and “Fences” in 2016. She won the Oscar for “Fences,” and picked up multiple awards for her other TV/film projects, including several trophies for “The Help.”

But Davis told the New York Times she regrets her role in “The Help,” because we didn’t get to hear enough from “the help” themselves — the women like her character Aibileen Clark and Octavia Spencer‘s Oscar-winning role as Minny Jackson.

Davis brought up the movie herself as part of a fan Q&A; here’s that section of her interview:

Have you ever passed on a role and regretted it? — Toti Plascencia, Chicago

I have passed on a lot of roles. There have been one or two that I regretted for maybe a minute, and then I let it go. As I’m growing older, I pass on roles because of my experience of knowing once the movie’s out, I’m going to have to promote it. And I don’t want to promote anything that I don’t believe in.

Almost a better question is, have I ever done roles that I’ve regretted? I have, and “The Help’ is on that list. But not in terms of the experience and the people involved because they were all great. The friendships that I formed are ones that I’m going to have for the rest of my life. I had a great experience with these other actresses, who are extraordinary human beings. And I could not ask for a better collaborator than Tate Taylor.

I just felt that at the end of the day that it wasn’t the voices of the maids that were heard. I know Aibileen. I know Minny. They’re my grandma. They’re my mom. And I know that if you do a movie where the whole premise is, ‘I want to know what it feels like to work for white people and to bring up children in 1963,’ I want to hear how you really feel about it. I never heard that in the course of the movie.

Fair point. It was an ensemble movie, so a lot of focus was on the rest of the cast — including Emma StoneBryce Dallas HowardJessica ChastainAllison JanneySissy Spacek, etc. They all shared the screen, rather than truly making the movie from the perspective of the maids, handing the microphone to women history usually leaves in the background.

But Davis emphasized that she had a great experience making the film and loved the cast as well as writer/director Tate Taylor, who adapted Kathryn Stockett’s best-selling novel.

Viola Davis will next be seen in “Widows,” which opens November 16.

  • Emma Watson Replacing Emma Stone in ‘Little Women’

Emma Watson Replacing Emma Stone in ‘Little Women’

    Paramount

One Emma’s loss is another Emma’s gain.

Emma Watson is in talks to join Greta Gerwig‘s adaptation of “Little Women.” She’s rumored to be playing the role intended for Emma Stone, that of eldest sister Meg March. (Previously played by Trini Alvarado in the 1994 version and Janet Leigh in the 1949 film.)

The production has already locked in Meryl Streep, Laura Dern, Saoirse Ronan, Timothee Chalamet, and Florence Pugh for the umpteenth version of the beloved Louisa May Alcott novel. (Making this both a “Lady Bird” reunion and a “Big Little Lies” reunion.)

The reason Emma Stone dropped out? She’ll be too busy promoting her award-seasons film “The Favourite,” according to Variety.

The new film from “The Lobster” director  Yorgos Lanthimos is a tale of court intrigue set in 18th century England starring Rachel Weisz and Olivia Colman. It debuts at the Venice Film Festival on August 30 and hits select theaters on November 23.

Gerwig’s “Little Women” is scheduled to be released December 25, 2019.

  • Scarlett Johansson Dethrones Emma Stone as World’s Highest Paid Actress 2018

Scarlett Johansson Dethrones Emma Stone as World’s Highest Paid Actress 2018

    Scarlett Johansson
    Marvel

Hollywood showed Scarlett Johansson the money, big time, making her the highest paid actress of the year. That’s thanks largely to Marvel.

It was also thanks to Marvel that, in 2016, the Black Widow star was named the highest-grossing actress of all time.

Those two don’t always go together — highest-paid and highest-grossing — but they did in ScarJo’s case, meaning you could argue the money was well invested.

Johansson took the 2017-2018 throne with $40.5 million. Last year, Emma Stone had No. 1 with $26 million. Stone had dethroned her friend Jennifer Lawrence, who was No. 1 for the two previous years.

This year, Emma Stone didn’t even make the list at all. Amy Adams, Emma Watson, and Charlize Theron also dropped off the list after being featured last year.

Forbes’ latest report covers earnings between June 1, 2017 and June 1, 2018.

Johansson *quadrupled* her 2017 earnings, thanks to pay for “Avengers: Infinity War,” but also probably including her pay for the less successful “Rough Night” and voice-work in “Isle of Dogs,” since they were released during that time period. (“Ghost in the Shell” was released March 2017 so it was probably included in last year’s tally.)

Forbes‘ figures are all before deducting taxes, fees for agents, managers, and lawyers, etc. Overall, the cumulative total is up 16 percent from $172.5 million in 2017. That’s good. But it’s sad that this worldwide list of movie stars is still very white.  Where are the women of color?

Here are the top 10 highest-paid actresses of the year:

    1. Scarlett Johansson, $40.5 million (pre-tax)
    2. Angelina Jolie, $28 million (upfront pay for “Maleficent 2,” among other things)
    3. Jennifer Aniston, $19.5 million (mostly from endorsements)
    4. Jennifer Lawrence, $18 million (“mother!,” “Red Sparrow,” Dior contract, X-Men pay)
    5. Reese Witherspoon, $16.5 million (“A Wrinkle in Time,” “Big Little Lies’)
    6. Mila Kunis, $16 million (“Bad Moms Christmas,” “Family Guy,” “The Spy Who Dumped Me”)
    7. Julia Roberts, $13 million (“Wonder,” Lancome endorsement, earnings from older movies)
    8. Cate Blanchett, $12.5 million (“Thor: Ragnarok,” “The House With a Clock In Its Walls”)
    9. Melissa McCarthy, $12 million (“Life of the Party,” “The Happytime Murders,” “Can You Ever Forgive Me?,” “SNL”)
    10. Gal Gadot, $10 million (newcomer to the list, from Revlon endorsement and upfront pay for “Wonder Woman 1984)

This list of movie stars is separate from the tally of highest-paid TV actresses. Sofia Vergara has had that on lock for years, with 2017 earnings north of $41.5 million.

Yes, they all make A TON of money. But they still make a ton less than the dudes.

Last year, Mark Wahlberg was named the highest-paid actor with $68 million, followed by The Rock with $65 million, Vin Diesel with $54.4 million, Adam Sandler with $50.5 million, and Jackie Chan with $49 million.

That’s the top 5 from the 2017 list for actors. That’s the same year when Emma Stone topped the entire lady list with $26 million.

We still have to see the actor list from 2018, to see if they went up or down. That list will be stacked with “Avengers” stars as well, possibly led by Chris Pratt thanks to “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.” We’ll see.

  • Laura Dern in Talks for Greta Gerwig’s All-Star ‘Little Women’

Laura Dern in Talks for Greta Gerwig’s All-Star ‘Little Women’

    HBO

Greta Gerwig‘s follow-up to her Oscar-nominated “Lady Bird” is shaping up to be the starriest project on the block: Laura Dern is reportedly in talks to join the writer-director’s adaptation of classic novel “Little Women.”

The film already has a murder’s row of Oscar winners and critical darlings attached or currently in negotiations to star. They include Meryl Streep (playing the family matriarch, Marmee), Emma Stone (eldest sister Meg), Saoirse Ronan (feisty aspiring author Jo), Timothee Chalamet (Laurie, the dreamy boy next door), Florence Pugh, and James Norton.

Now, The Hollywood Reporter says that Dern is set to join their ranks. No word yet on which character from Louisa May Alcott’s book she will be playing. She’s currently shooting season two of HBO’s “Big Little Lies,” which also features Streep.

In addition to directing, Gerwig is also adapting Alcott’s work for the screenplay. The novel has inspired numerous films and TV projects over the years, including a recent Masterpiece Theater series; a 1933 feature with Katharine Hepburn as Jo; and a 1994 big screen outing starring Winona RyderKirsten DunstClaire DanesChristian Bale, and Susan Sarandon.

Based on its insane cast list alone, we think this new take may just give the beloved ’90s version a serious run for its money. Stay tuned for more intel as it becomes available.

  • Netflix ‘Maniac’ Trailer: Justin Theroux Drug Trial Goes ‘Superbad’ for Jonah Hill & Emma Stone

Netflix ‘Maniac’ Trailer: Justin Theroux Drug Trial Goes ‘Superbad’ for Jonah Hill & Emma Stone

    Maniac
    Netflix

This looks like quite a trip.

Netflix just shared the official trailer for the limited series “Maniac” from Cary Fukunaga.

Emma Stone, Jonah HillJustin Theroux, and even Sally Field star in the series that already feels like a mix of “Black Mirror,” “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” maybe “Inception,” and — thanks to some mind-games — “Lord of the Rings.” You can throw in some “Superbad” if you want, since it’s a reunion for two of the stars.

    It’s also retro fabulous.

    Here’s the brief synopsis:

MANIAC tells the stories of Annie Landsberg (Emma Stone) and Owen Milgrim (Jonah Hill), two strangers drawn to the late stages of a mysterious pharmaceutical trial. Things do not go as planned.

    Here’s the trailer:

Yes, Jonah Hill looks different again. He does that.

A bunch of cool photos were released a while back. Netflix tends to be great at series, not so great at movies. So since this is a series, we’re very excited and intrigued.

“Maniac” will be ready for streaming on Netflix September 21.

  • Netflix Reveals ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’ and ‘Maniac’ Premiere Dates, Announces New Series

Netflix Reveals ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’ and ‘Maniac’ Premiere Dates, Announces New Series

    Maniac
    Netflix

Netflix did not chill on Sunday. Instead, we got several updates on new series announcements, and anticipated arrival premiere dates, from the TCA summer press tour.

    “MANIAC”
Get yourself prepared for a “Superbad” reunion on September 21. That’s when the 10-episode limited series “Maniac” premieres, starring Emma Stone and Jonah Hill, with backup from Justin Theroux and Sally Field. The entire series was directed by Cary Fukunaga.

“Maniac” follows Annie Landsberg and Owen Milgrim, “two strangers drawn to the late stages of a mysterious pharmaceutical trial, each for their own reasons. Annie’s disaffected and aimless, fixated on broken relationships with her mother and her sister; Owen, the fifth son of wealthy New York industrialists, has struggled his whole life with a disputed diagnosis of schizophrenia.”

    “CHILLING ADVENTURES OF SABRINA”
Netflix broke out its own witchy lineup of Sabrinas to reveal the October 26 premiere date for this “Riverdale” spinoff series:

Kiernan Shipka has the lead role in this much darker take on Sabrina the Teenage Witch. The rest of the cast includes Miranda Otto, Lucy Davis, Ross Lynch, Michelle Gomez, Chance Perdomo, Jaz Sinclair, Richard Coyle, Tati Gabrielle, Adeline Rudolph, Abigail Cowen, Lachlan Watson, and even Bronson Pinchot.

    OCTAVIA SPENCER’S MADAM C.J. WALKER
Netflix just announced it has picked up this series executive produced by Octavia Spencer and LeBron James — yes! Oscar winner Spencer will star in the eight-episode series, based on the book “On Our Own Ground,” telling the story of entrepreneur Madam C.J. Walker, America’s first black self-made female millionaire. The series is meant to be a “highly irreverent” look at the turn-of-the-century black-beauty-and-hair-care mogul’s success, with Walker overcoming “epic rivalries, tumultuous marriages and some trifling family.”

    “WHITE LINES”
Netflix also announced it ordered the mystery drama series “White Lines” from the producers of “The Crown” and “Money Heist.” In the series, “when the body of a legendary Manchester DJ is discovered 20 years after his mysterious disappearance from Ibiza, his sister returns to the beautiful Spanish island to find out what happened. Her investigation will lead her through a thrilling world of dance music, super yachts, lies and cover-ups, forcing her to confront the darker sides of her own character in a place where people live life on the edge.”

  • ‘Zombieland 2’ Is Finally Happening With Original Cast Members

    Zombieland
    Sony Pictures

“Zombieland” is coming back to life!

Almost 10 years after the hit horror comedy came out, the original cast members —  Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone, Jesse Eisenberg and Abigail Breslin — are reuniting for a sequel.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, director Ruben Fleischer will also return, as will original writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese (who’ve been busy in recent years penning the “Deadpool” movies).

The sequel is set to begin production in January for a release date in October 2019, when the original will celebrate its 10th anniversary.

The post-apocalyptic horror comedy followed four survivors of an epidemic that turned most Americans into the undead. They eventually formed an unlikely, sometimes contentious family.

The sequel will the take the family from the White House to the American heartland as they face off against new kinds of zombies that have evolved since the first movie, as well as some new human survivors. And most of all, they will have to face the growing pains of their own snarky, makeshift family.

No word on if Bill Murray, who appeared in the original as his human self and was seen as his undead self, will make another cameo in the sequel.

  • ‘Zombieland 2’ May Be Back From the Dead, Original Cast to Return

It’s been almost a decade since “Zombieland” hit theaters, and with every passing year, the chance for a sequel seems slimmer and slimmer. But moviegoers know that no idea in Hollywood is ever really dead, and now the writers of the flick are teasing that a follow-up may finally be happening after all.

In an interview with Vulture timed to the impending release of another sequel they penned, “Deadpool 2,” writing duo Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick revealed that they’re currently hammering out the details to make “Zombieland 2” a reality — and it could have a very timely release date.

“‘Zombieland’ came out October of 2009,” Wernick told Vulture. “We don’t know what you get someone for their tenth anniversary, but it may be a ‘Zombieland 2.’”

The writer added that the hope is to start filming sometime early next year, with an October 2019 release date in mind. And the best part? The original cast — which included Emma Stone, Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, and Abigail Breslin — should all be back, too.

Both Vulture and the screenwriters made it clear that nothing is official yet (Wernick told the site that he and Reese were currently “sitting on information” that’s top secret for now). But the duo seem confident about the project’s prospects, and believe that fans hoping for a sequel will get one “very, very soon,” Wernick said.

We’ll keep our fingers crossed that this actually happens. (And that Bill Murray somehow makes another cameo. Hey, they’re not called the undead for nothing.)

  • Jennifer Lawrence Auditioned For Emma Stone’s Role in ‘Easy A’

Academy Of Motion Picture Arts And Sciences' 9th Annual Governors Awards - ArrivalsGetting “Easy A” turned out to be not so easy for Jennifer Lawrence. And friend Emma Stone is #sorrynotsorry.

Lawrence admitted that she auditioned for the lead role in the teen comedy, which went to Stone. In a Hollywood Reporter roundtable interview with six top actresses, Stone revealed that her favorite line as one of her character is “Piss off, Quiznos” from “Easy A.”

That led Lawrence to note, “I auditioned for ‘Easy A.’ I wanted it so bad.”

Stone laughed, “Well, guess what? You didn’t get it. You didn’t get it because you suck!”

“Outside!” Lawrence joked, as if she and Stone should brawl in the street.

It’s all in good fun, though, as the two Oscar winners are good friends. As detailed in Vanity Fair, they met when Stone asked her “Zombieland” co-star Woody Harrelson for Lawrence’s number (he worked with the latter on “Hunger Games”).

Since then, the actresses have been each other’s No. 1 fan, even though they go up against each other for roles. As Lawrence joked of supporting Stone during her “La La Land” awards tour, “If I wasn’t her biggest fan, I would’ve Tonya Harding’d her in the kneecaps.”

  • Emma Stone’s Male Co-Stars Took Salary Cuts So She Could Have Equal Pay

AFI Life Achievement Award Gala Tribute To Diane Keaton - ArrivalsFeminism isn’t just for women, as Oscar winner Emma Stone points out in an Out interview about her upcoming movie, “Battle of the Sexes.”

The film tells the story of the legendary 1973 tennis match between Bobby Riggs and Billie Jean King, who was an advocate for equal pay for male and female players.

Equal pay is also still a challenge in Hollywood, as Stone discusses with King and “Battle of the Sexes” co-star Andrea Riseborough.

“I’ve needed my male co-stars to take a pay cut so that I may have parity with them,” Stone noted. “And that’s something they do for me because they feel it’s what’s right and fair. That’s something that’s also not discussed, necessarily — that our getting equal pay is going to require people to selflessly say, ‘That’s what’s fair.’”

“If my male co-star, who has a higher quote than me but believes we are equal, takes a pay cut so that I can match him, that changes my quote in the future and changes my life.”

King responded that such change can only happen when both men and women work together on equal pay.

“You just gave an example of why men are so vital to these changes,” the tennis legend said. “They’re usually in the power position, and if they start to change the paradigms, things start to shift.”

“Battle of the Sexes” opens in theaters September 22.
