Premiering on FX on Hulu beginning November 14th is the new series ‘A Murder at the End of the World,’ which was created by actress Brit Marling and director Zal Batmanglij (‘Sound of My Voice,’ ‘The East’) and stars Emma Corrin (‘Deadpool 3’) and Clive Owen (‘Children of Men’).

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with Emma Corrin about their work on ‘A Murder at the End of the World,’ discovering their character, collaborating with series creators Brit Marling and director Zal Batmanglij, and shooting in Iceland.

You can read the full interview below or click on the video player above to watch our interviews with Corrin, Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij.

Moviefone: To begin with, how did Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij pitch the character of Darby to you when you were first in discussions for the role?

Emma Corrin: It came about in a quite strange but beautiful way where I was sent the script ahead of meeting them. I love reading scripts and you must do it a lot for this job. But sometimes I do find it hard to fully get lost in them. I don’t think I’ve ever read a script and not been able to put it down, just because of the format of it and the way that all works. I honestly couldn’t put these down. I was tearing through them, and I finished three and I was like, “Please, will they send me more?” They were like, “We don’t know if we should.” I was like, “Please, I need to know.” That was an amazing feeling. So immediately I felt so connected to the character. I felt compelled by her. I found her really refreshing. I just thought it was incredibly clever storytelling. So then when I met Brit and Zal on a Zoom, we just talked about storytelling. We talked about childhood, play, writing stories, what stories mean for us, why we tell them, why Darby tells them, and who she is and how that informs her. After that, they offered me the role. We hadn’t done the normal thing of going through scenes or reading through them. We’d really talked about her and her spirit, and that felt beautiful in some way to be offered it off the basis of that.

MF: How did you personally connect to the character of Darby?

EC: I think her look, and I think what really helped inform me was exploring the younger Darby and the older Darby, and doing work on how those people are different. I think with any character, even if a younger version of them isn’t in the piece you’re doing, I think that it’s what you explore. How has what this person has been through, even if it’s not in the script or in the story, how has it informed who they are today? I think it was a real gift to be able to have that person scripted, have that youthful part of her scripted, and be able to talk to Brit and Zal about that. Obviously, it’s a unique upbringing. Her dad’s a coroner. She’s grown up on crime scenes. There was a lot to explore there.

MF: Finally, what was the most difficult aspect of shooting on location in Iceland?

EC: Shooting in that environment is so challenging because it is freezing and I’m not good in cold temperatures. I have terrible circulation and it was really demanding. But also, I found that incredibly rewarding because you feel like you’re working hard, and you feel like you deserve your bed at the end of the day. You know that feeling? It was a beautiful place to shoot. Even if you were absolutely freezing and thought you were going to die of hypothermia, you looked around and it was just breathtaking. So, it was sort of a double-sided thing. I honestly found the shoot in New Jersey hard on the stages. It’s a really demanding series. I’m in every single frame. I think that’s one of the things that excited me when I read the script. But then in actuality it was insane, and amazing. I was so supported by an incredible cast and an incredible crew who were always there for me when it got hard. But they built this hotel in the stages, and I was rattling around there every day for about four or five months. I really felt like I was starting to get mad by the end of it.

What’s the Plot of ‘A Murder at the End of the World?

‘A Murder at the end of the World’ sees Gen Z amateur sleuth and tech-savvy hacker Darby Hart (Emma Corrin) and eight other guests invited by a reclusive billionaire (Clive Owen) to participate in a retreat at a remote and dazzling location.

When one of the other guests is found dead, Darby must use all of her skills to prove it was murder against a tide of competing interests and before the killer takes another life. She’ll gave to deal with both the human element and the complicated technology that runs the facility.

Launching on FX on Hulu on November 14th with two episodes, ‘A Murder at the End of the World’ sees the much-anticipated return to TV of writer/directors Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij, who last brought us the twisty, complicated series ‘The OA’ on Netflix.

Their new series doesn’t dig into quite as strange themes, but there is plenty on the creators’ minds, exploring concepts of trust, technology, love and, as the title suggests, murder.

‘A Murder at the End of the World’: Overview

Harris Dickinson as Bill and Emma Corrin as Darby Hart in 'A Murder at the End of the World.'
(L to R) Harris Dickinson as Bill and Emma Corrin as Darby Hart in ‘A Murder at the End of the World.’ Photo: Chris Saunders/FX.

In their movie work, Batmanglij have always explored fascinating ideas, though sometimes concept has trumped character. There is some of that for sure in their new limited series, though at least it has the chance to come to a proper conclusion (unlike ‘The OA’, which Netflix cancelled before the story was fully told, leaving fans frustrated).

Here, they’ve cooked up a chilly take on the likes of Poirot and even ‘True Detective’ (the flashback subplot featuring Emma Corrin‘s Darby and Harris Dickinson’s Bill on a mission to unmask a suburban serial killer feels very much in the latter’s gritty wheelhouse).

It’s a solid piece of entertainment if you’re a fan of the mystery genre, though the intertwining stories don’t always mesh as well as they might (and the flashbacks are less watchable than the main plot, sometimes serving as distraction more than background).

The creative pair has long proved they know how to create compelling worlds, and ‘Murder’ is no exception.

Utilizing voiceover and some of the other tropes of the mystery genre, the series cooks up a variety of potential suspects for Darby to investigate, all with their own motivations and interests, though they’re naturally not all as well drawn as she is.

As a setting for the show, the high-tech, stylish hotel facility is both interesting visually and able to push the story forward, not least because the idea of surveillance and how the point of view can be shifted subconsciously is one that the series explores well.

It must be said, though, despite the clearly decent budget, a few moments are very obviously greenscreen, such as when the cast are out and about in the freezing Icelandic wastes. A few shots are embarrassingly amateur for such a stylish series.

How Are the Performances in ‘A Murder at the End of the World’?

Emma Corrin as Darby Hart and Alice Braga as Sian in 'A Murder at the End of the World.'
(L to R) Emma Corrin as Darby Hart and Alice Braga as Sian in ‘A Murder at the End of the World.’ Photo: Eric Liebowitz/FX.

Corrin, of course, anchors every scene, but unlike ‘The Crown’ where she found the perfect tones and attitude as Princess Diana, her turn as Darby is held back somewhat by having to adopt the accent and mood of the hacker.

Darby’s an awkward character, whose low key style and troubled past edge her into cliché, though she is at least an effective detective.

It’s Clive Owen who shines more here, playing the mysterious tech maven Andy Ronson with shades of Elon Musk (though less annoying) who has plans to save the world from a climate crisis and has gathered a group of friends and experts to bear witness to some of his amazing new ideas.

Owen brings plenty to the table as Ronson, peeling away his layers as the story moves on, and showing his troubled relationship with wife Lee (Marling). The actor/writer/director has given herself enough to chew on as Lee, who keeps her own secrets close but finds a kinship in Darby.

And the third tentpole of the show is Harris Dickinson as Darby’s former partner/love Bill Farrah, who accompanies her on a murder mystery in the flashbacks and then shows up at the retreat after years of estrangement. Dickinson brings Bill to life with subtlety and weird charm even as the character erects big boundaries as an agitprop hacker-turned-Banksy type.

Elsewhere, most of the other characters are treated like plot devices more than people, with only a few making a real impression, such as Joan Chen playing Lu Mei, a wealthy contemporary of Andy who designs smart cities and Edoardo Ballerini as Ray, the ever-present AI who controls the facility and acts as a very advanced version of Alexa.

‘A Murder at the End of the World’: Final Thoughts

The new show won’t completely fill the void for those missing ‘The OA’, but ‘A Murder at the End of the World’ does at least represent Batmanglij and Marling given relatively free reign to indulge themselves. Though the storyline is a little more conventional, there are enough touches to make this work on different levels.

If the ambition sometimes expands beyond their reach, the show still offers a tricky mystery to keep you guessing.

‘A Murder at the End of the World’ receives 7.5 out of 10 stars.

    Preview:

    • Production on ‘Deadpool 3’ was shut down for the strike.
    • The film should be starting up again this month.
    • Ryan Reynolds let slip that the Dogpool character concept will be in the movie.

Like so many movies in production, ‘Deadpool 3’, the third outing for Ryan Reynolds’ “Merc with a Mouth” Wade Wilson was shut down back in July when actors joined the Writers Guild on the picket line to strike for a new deal.

Since then, director Shawn Levy has said that he and his team were halfway through filming when the shutdown hit. Since then, he has been able to come back to work editing what footage was shot and overseeing any effects shots for those sequences.

But with the performers’ union SAG-AFTRA making a tentative deal for a new contract, Levy, Reynolds and the rest can get back to work.

A new report in Variety says that the movie, a big priority for Disney/Marvel, will be gearing up to get back to shooting in the coming days and weeks, with the current aim to have production in the UK up and running before Thanksgiving (which this year falls on November 23rd).

The rush is partly because the holiday period will mean another shutdown for festivities over Christmas and the New Year, and also so that the movie can meet its planned summer 2024 release date.

The ‘Deadpool’ team have yet to release formal details of the third movie’s plot, but we do know it’ll see Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine meeting up with Reynolds’ Wade Wilson –– and that things will not necessarily go well, since the pair tend to fight when they interact in the comics.

We’re promised plenty of the usual meta madness inherent to Deadpool’s adventures. This time around, expect prods at the X-Men’s (and Wade’s) previous home at 20th Century Fox (before Disney’s purchase of it nabbed them the rights to the characters), and plenty of cameos from other people, including Jennifer Garner as Elektra.

Several of the cast from the first two ‘Deadpool’ movies are returning for this one, with Morena Baccarin, Brianna Hildebrand, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni and Rob Delaney all aboard, joined by new recruits Emma Corrin and Matthew McFadyen (whose characters are still a mystery, though Corrin is reportedly a villain.)

    Who is Dogpool?

Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) reacts to Colossus’ (voiced by Stefan Kapicic) threats in 'Deadpool.'
Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) reacts to Colossus’ (voiced by Stefan Kapicic) threats in ‘Deadpool.’

Reynolds, who is once more allowed to promote the movie since the strike has been called off, hit twitter today to reveal that the comics character known as “Dogpool” will be showing up in the movie (assuming he’s not joking, but it doesn’t seem that way).

For those who might not be up on the sprawling history of Deadpool in the comics, the idea was introduced in a storyline where Deadpool traveled to Earth-103173, a parallel reality in which scientists conducted Weapon X-level experiments on a dog named Wilson, transforming him into Dogpool. The canine hero would become a member of the Deadpool Corps., a team of alternate-reality Deadpools.

Think the likes of Alligator Loki in the Disney+ series named for Tom Hiddleston’s God of Mischief. Marvel has been using the Multiverse a lot in its current run of movies and TV series, so naturally this is something they could explore with Deadpool.

When will ‘Deadpool 3’ arrive in theaters?

The rapid start looks to be somewhat in vain, though, at least in terms of getting the movie ready for its planned May 3, 2024 opening. According to Variety, the movie is now shifting to July 26th of that year (so still summer at least).

‘Deadpool 3’ is inheriting that July date from ‘Captain America: Brave New World’, which though it was thought to be closer to finished, is now moving to February 14, 2025. We’d assume that is to allow the Marvel team to maintain their hefty MCU chronology.

The changes mean ‘Thunderbolts’, which hadn’t yet kicked off filming when the strikes hit, is shifting from December 2024 to July 25th, 2025. And the troubled ‘Blade’ will now hit screens on November 7th, 2025.

If you liked the 2000s ‘X-Men’ movies but had an issue with the black leather costumes the team wore –– there was even a meta reference about it when Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine complained about them, to which James Marsden’s Cyclops responded, “What would you prefer? Yellow spandex?” –– prepare to be happy.

Getting ahead of more set pictures arriving showing him in it, the ‘Deadpool 3’ team (including star Ryan Reynolds) has posted an image of Reynolds in his newly modified Deadpool suit walking next to Jackman –– who is in the traditional yellow garb and spiky high hair.

It does seem a little incongruous to see Jackman in such comics faithful attire after years of black leather (or civvies), but the thought of the jokes to be had about it truly makes it worthwhile. And it would truly indicate that there’s either some compelling reason for him to wear that suit or confirmation that this is an alt-universe variant of ‘Logan.’

Deadpool 3: What do we know so far?

Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman discuss Marvel Studios' 'Deadpool 3.'
(L to R) Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman discuss Marvel Studios’ ‘Deadpool 3.’ Photo courtesy of Ryan Reynolds YouTube channel.

‘Deadpool 3’ has been in the works for a while now, with Reynolds naturally driving development. Animation veterans Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin worked on the early drafts of the script, and more recently, regular ‘Deadpool’ writer duo Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick came aboard to help Reynolds get it into shooting shape. Because as we know, the screenplays for these movies are usually heavily reliant on the star and others riffing as well as established pages.

The Wolverine announcement came last year, as did word that director Shawn Levy –– who has now worked with Reynolds on ‘Free Guy’ and Netflix action pic ‘The Adam Project’ –– would be taking the reins on the new movie.

Levy has had the cameras rolling for a few weeks now, and of course pictures have begun to appear online. But, as filmmakers such as ‘Shazam’s David F. Sandberg learned, it’s better to get your own, properly lit and composed images is preferable to bad paparazzi pictures.

A lot of people from the first two ‘Deadpool’ movies will be back.

Leslie Uggams is on board to return as Wade Wilson’s roommate Blind Al, alongside Morena Baccarin as Vanessa, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Karan Soni as Dopinder, Shioli Kutsuna as Yukio, Stefan Kapicic as Colossus and Rob Delaney (from ‘Deadpool 2’) as Peter.

New to the franchise? ‘The Crown’s Emma Corrin is co-starring in an unknown new role, one that will reportedly cause trouble for our heroes (when they’re not too busy causing trouble for each other) and ‘Succession’s Matthew Macfadyen, while Jennifer Garner was recently confirmed to be reprising the role of Elektra from the ‘Daredevil’ movies.

With the cameras now reportedly rolling on the third ‘Deadpool’, director Shawn Levy has been busy gathering the cast he needs to surround Ryan Reynolds’ titular Merc With A Mouth, who also goes by the name Wade Wilson.

Some are new recruits –– ‘The Crown’s Emma Corrin, for example is reportedly playing one of the movie’s main villains, while ‘Succession’s Matthew Macfadyen is also aboard in an unknown capacity (we could see him being a Weasley character of some sort, though he might want to do something different after years of Tom Wambsgams).

    FW15JuJGFTtwqnkn4XqPf5

And the headliner, of course, is Hugh Jackman, who after two films (and years of a fake rivalry with his good friend Reynolds) is bringing Wolverine to both the ‘Deadpool’ franchise and the MCU (since the new movie will be overseen by producer Kevin Feige and counted as part of the sprawling superhero universe for the first time).

But then there are the returning characters who have appeared in previous ‘Deadpool’ movies –– and the latest to be announced are Brianna Hildebrand and Shioli Kutsuna, per Deadline.

Hildebrand has played sullen, sarcastic teen X-Men hero Negasonic Teenage Warhead (who has the ability to generate nuclear explosions) since the original, while Kutsuna joined in the second as her girlfriend, the cheery Japanese mutant ninja Yukio.

Who is else is back for the movie?

Alongside Hildebrand and Kutsuna, many of the movies’ veteran characters are coming back. Morena Baccarin, who plays the main character’s great love, Vanessa, will return (thanks to some convenient time-travel shenanigans that retconned her character’s death at the start of the second movie). Karan Soni is once again playing humble, nervous taxi driver Dopinder, while Leslie Uggams will be the sardonic Blind Al, Wade’s roommate. And we’ll also see more from stoic, metallic X-Men member Colossus, brought to life via performance capture and CGI by Stefan Kapicic.

Those have all been with the franchise since the original. Joining from ‘Deadpool 2’ is Peter (Rob Delaney) the unassuming human who stumbled into Wade’s auditions for his X-Force team and somehow ended up joining the group. Though Peter ended up dying like (most of) the rest of the ill-fated squad, Wade also used time travel to save him at the end of the movie.

What will ‘Deadpool 3’ be about?

So far, director Shawn Levy, who collaborated with regular writers Reynolds, Paul Wernick, Rhett Reese and new recruit Zeb Wells, has not said explicitly what the storyline will be.

Yet we know from comments that Jackman in particular has made, that we can expect Wolverine and Deadpool to butt heads (probably literally at several points), and there will of course be knowing nudges at Wade’s new superhero reality –– we’d be shocked if there aren’t at least cameos from one or two MCU characters.

‘Deadpool 3’ is currently targeting a November 8th, 2024, release date.

In other news, Ridley Scott is rounding out the cast for his long-anticipated sequel ‘Gladiator 2’ –– but he’s been required to make a change as he does.

While ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’ Oscar nominee Barry Keoghan had been in the midst of making a deal to play the antagonist, Emperor Geta, he’s had to drop out due to a schedule clash. But according to Deadline’s story on the matter, Scott has quickly found a replacement –– Fred Hechinger, seen in the first season of ‘The White Lotus’, will play the character instead.

Hechinger’s casting is just the latest piece of news on the film, and he’s part of an eclectic group of fresh additions to the movie.

Also new this time? ‘Moon Knight’ breakout May Calamawy, who was picked after an extensive audition process and is apparently a key character in the movie.

Besides her, Lior Raz, Peter Mensah (no stranger to gladiators after appearing on Starz series ‘Spartacus’ as Doctore) and Matt Lucas are all playing new characters. Plus, Derek Jacobi, who played Senator Gracchus in the original movie, will be reprising the role in the sequel.

Who is already in the cast?

‘Gladiator 2’s ensemble already boasts a compelling mix of established names and rising stars, with Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn and Connie Nielsen aboard.

Nielsen, of course is another returning veteran of the originally, and she’ll be reprising the role of Lucilla, mother to Lucius, played as a boy by Spencer Treat Clark in the original and now by ‘Aftersun’s Paul Mescal.

And there has been chatter that Djimon Hounsou, Juba from the original, will be back for this one.

    CJVuNFCKxFBq4IsG555O72

How does the sequel continue the story of ‘Gladiator’?

You’ll recall that the 2000 original saw Russell Crowe as Maximus, a Roman general betrayed by the scheming Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) who killed his father the emperor and seized power.

While Maximus isn’t likely to show up –– short of CG-enhanced flashbacks since the character died in the original and went to a lush heavenly zone to reunite with his slaughtered family –– the story for the new movie, written by David Scarpa, sets the clock forward by several years.

In addition to being Lucilla’s son, he was the nephew of Commodus. Maximus saved Lucius and Lucilla while avenging his own family and left a strong impression on the young boy.

Quite what Lucius is up to in the new film remains to be seen, but there’s a chance he’ll be ending up in the arena himself, especially since Mescal has reportedly been training for the role.

Knowing Scott’s current prolific output, there’s every chance he’ll be hopping on to a different film as soon as ‘Gladiator 2’ is in good shape. He already has ‘Napoleon’ (a reunion with Phoenix) due in theaters on November 22nd this year.

‘Gladiator 2’, meanwhile, has earmarked the same date –– November 22nd but for next year.

What had Morena Baccarin said about her return previously?

Baccarin returning to the fold is the one of interest here, since the actor appeared on Michael Rosenbaum’s podcast ‘Inside of You’ last week and expressed concern that her deal was not yet closed.

    Here’s what she said:

“Yeah, what is up with ‘Deadpool 3?’ That’s a really good question. I have to be very diplomatic about what I say here. I’d like to be in it. They have called me about being in it. Right now, we have not agreed on terms, and everybody’s trying their best, and doing their best. But it may or may not work out. I don’t know. I do think that this movie, since the acquirement of this Deadpool universe by Marvel/Disney, that merger that happened, I do feel like they’re trying to reinvent it a little bit. I think this movie is going to be much more about Wolverine and Deadpool.”

Whether or not her comments had any impact on her return will likely remain behind closed doors, but a least she’ll be back –– and hopefully not just killed for plot reasons as in the second movie.

    Who is making ‘Deadpool 3’?

‘Deadpool 3’ has been in the works for a while now, with Reynolds naturally driving development. Animation veterans Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin worked on the early drafts of the script, and then regular ‘Deadpool’ writer duo Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick came aboard to help Reynolds get it into shooting shape. Because as we know, the screenplays for these movies are usually heavily reliant on the star and others riffing as well as established pages.

Director Shawn Levy –– who has now worked with Reynolds on ‘Free Guy’ and Netflix action pic ‘The Adam Project’ –– would be taking the reins on the new movie, which will see Hugh Jackman show up properly as Logan/Wolverine after many, many jokes at his expense.

Emma Corrin of ‘The Crown’ is also aboard as an unknown villain, with ‘Succession’s Matthew Macfadyen also aboard. And while Deadline’s report originally mentioned that Brianna Hildebrand would be back as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, it has since corrected that to say her return is not certain.

‘Deadpool 3’ will be in theaters on November 8th, 2024.

Given that he’s spent the last few years around people who trade sweary insults and a powerful person named Logan thanks to his role as Tom Wambsgans on ‘Succession’, Matthew Macfadyen will probably have an easier time than some adapting to life in the ‘Deadpool’ movie universe than others.

According to Deadline, the British actor is making a deal to join ‘Deadpool 3’ in an unspecified role. It marks the latest big gig for the actor, who has been one of the best things about ‘Succession’ in its run (and that’s saying something, given the powerhouse ensemble and top notch, spiky scripts). With the show now airing its final season, we can expect to see him picking up even more work, particularly since he scored an Emmy, a BAFTA and a host of other awards for his work on the series.

Yet ‘Deadpool 3’ is on a whole other level, calling back to a time when he was more regularly seen on the big screen. It already stars Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson and will feature Hugh Jackman playing the target of Wilson’s most meta attention, Wolverine.

The Wolverine announcement came last year, as did word that director Shawn Levy –– who has now worked with Reynolds on ‘Free Guy’ and Netflix action pic ‘The Adam Project’ –– would be taking the reins on the new movie.

It’s exciting for Marvel fans, as this movie will mark the first time Deadpool will be properly in the MCU, and studio boss Kevin Feige is involved as one of its producers.

While Leslie Uggams is on board to return as Wade Wilson’s roommate Blind Al, while ‘The Crown’s Emma Corrin is co-starring in an unknown new role, one that will reportedly cause trouble for our heroes (when they’re not too busy causing trouble for each other).

MacFadyen’s addition just makes us anticipate it all the more. The actor is currently filming a new thriller called ‘Holland, Michigan’, which also stars Nicole Kidman and Gael García Bernal.

‘Succession’s fourth and final season is arriving weekly on HBO on Sundays. ‘Deadpool 3’, meanwhile, is scheduled to land in theaters on November 8th, 2024.

We’ve been told more than once that the most antagonistic combination in ‘Deadpool 3’ is likely to be Ryan Reynolds’ Wade Wilson (AKA the titular Deadpool) and his longtime obsession, Logan/Wolverine, played in a surprise return by Hugh Jackman.

The real life pals’ online rivalry will spill out into the movie as Jackman has promised that Wolverine will be no fan of Deadpool. But it appears they will also find common ground facing off against a bigger threat.

Deadline reports that Emma Corrin, who broke out playing Princess Diana on Season 4 of Royal Family drama ‘The Crown’, is set to play a villain in the new movie.

Naturally, no one is saying anything about the character so far, which means the internet is already frothily speculating on who they might play––especially if Team Deadpool is considering a Marvel Comics character. Emma Frost? Whoever they end up as, Corrin will bring quality to the role––they have also been seen in the likes of ‘My Policeman’ and Netflix’s recent adaptation of ‘Lady Chatterley’s Lover’.

Reynolds welcomed the new addition in typically silly social media style…

In related Corrin news, they have also landed another role (one which necessitated the ‘Deadpool’ team figuring out schedules before they could commit).

Corrin will be part of the cast for ‘The Northman’ director Robert Eggers’ take on classic vampire tale ‘Nosferatu’.

The new movie is a gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman (Lily-Rose Depp) in 19th century Germany and the ancient Transylvanian vampire (Bill Skarsgård) who stalks her, bringing untold horror with him.

Nicholas Hoult and Willem Dafoe are also aboard the fanged film, though we don’t yet know exactly what they or Corrin will be playing.

Nosferatu’ is inspired by F. W. Murnau’s 1922 silent horror feature of the same name. It was given that title, which is derived from an archaic Romanian name for vampire, following a copyright spat with the estate of Bram Stoker, the Irish novelist who wrote ‘Dracula’ in 1897. Murnau’s vampire was renamed Count Orlok.

Eggers, who also wrote the script, is scheduled to start shooting next month in Europe.

  • ‘My Policeman’ Interviews: Michael Grandage and Gina McKee

    JZfegEoy

Opening in theaters on October 21st and streaming on Prime Video November 4th is the new romantic drama ‘My Policeman,’ from director Michael Grandage.

First set in 1950s Brighton, a gay policeman, Tom Burgess (Harry Styles), marries schoolteacher Marion Taylor (Emma Corrin) while being in a relationship with Patrick Hazlewood (David Dawson), a museum curator.

The secret they share threatens to ruin them all and continues for decades, with a flash-forward to the late 1990s depicting an older Marion (Gina McKee) now caring for the ailing Patrick (Rupert Everett), against Tom’s (Linus Roache) wishes.

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with director Michael Grandage and actress Gina McKee about their work on ‘My Policeman,’ why Grandage wanted to make the movie, setting the movie in two separate timelines, the pain and regret that Marion feels, why she chooses to help Patrick, and how McKee worked with actress Emma Corrin to create the character.

You can read the full interviews below or click on the video player above to watch our interviews with director Michael Grandage and Gina McKee about ‘My Policeman.’

Moviefone: To begin with, as a director, what excited you about this project and what were some of the themes that you wanted to explore with this movie?

Michael Grandage: Well, it’s always great when you think you can bring something of a personal voice to something. I was born in the England that this movie is set in, and the law didn’t change until I was quite young. When it did, there were years of prejudice left after it.

I kind of thought it would be lovely to be able to make something quite apart from all of the cinematic reasons I wanted to make it, quite apart from all the thematic reasons, it would also be wonderful to make a movie that might be part of a slightly bigger debate. Because in spite of all of the wonderful advances that have been made, that I’m very proud of over the last 40 years by the LGBTQ+ community, I think for the moment it’s feeling a little fragile.

I think right now it would be great to have a film in the consciousness of young people that helps them understand a little bit about what it’s like if you live in a society where you can’t be free to be yourself. So, for me, and I haven’t even touched on the answer to your question about all of the aesthetic and creative reasons, but that’s one big reason why I’d love to make a movie that is part of something that I think is important right now.

MF: Can you talk about the challenges of setting the movie in two separate timelines?

MG: Yeah, I mean for me, I actually see it almost as three because you can’t help but take the timeline you are in and watch it through the prism of 2022. You watch a film that takes place 23 years ago in 1999, and then beyond that. In a way, you go on some brief moment of time travel right up to the present to see what has changed from a societal point of view. I think that’s also helpful as part of the bigger picture.

But the biggest reason I wanted to do it was because of the fact that I believe that missing 40 years in the film, I think we change hugely in our personalities in a period like that. I was wanting to explore the whole notion of time and memory and what it does and how, sometimes, it only seems like yesterday. The reason we have that phrase is sometimes it does, and other days it absolutely doesn’t.

So, there’s a little moment when Rupert Everett’s character in the film is getting his pills from Gina McKee, and he looks up at Gina and just in a tiny flash he sees the younger Marion looking down at him. Because that’s what memory sometimes does, that’s how memory works, that’s how time works. But it’s a brief fleeting moment, and I think you can only do that if you’re playing with the two time periods.

I knew I wanted to use it very fleetingly, the whole way you bring the one time period into another time period. I barely use it at all, but it’s there as a kind of unspoken thing, if you like.

MF: Gina, could talk about the pain and the regret that Marion has lived with through all these years?

Gina McKee: I think that’s a really good starting point because as you may have established already, we meet three people in the 1950s, who are brought together by love and divided by prejudice. The things that they experience with each other and the things that they do for and against one another indelibly marks them. So, there’s a lot. All three characters have regret and certainly a huge amount of pain. In Marion’s case, a massive learning curve.

She also has a huge sense of duty and love. The bond of love brings her together with Tom, and they find solace in that love. But I think ultimately, the courage to face the past is something that completely drew me to the film. What happens when somebody like that doesn’t continue to seek refuge, who says, “No, we’ve got to check this out. We’ve got to look at this.” I think that’s a wonderful dynamic and ultimately for me, a very hopeful thing.

MF: Why does Marion decide to help Patrick, all these years later, even against Tom’s own wishes?

GM: Because she has to, there’s no way forward. They’re in a holding pattern and that can’t continue. You’ve got a woman who is now in retirement and it’s now or never. So, I think that there is lots of forms of love and I think Marion’s duty to Tom is absolute. Sometimes, the way she interprets duty is completely screwed up as you see in the movie.

But that is really the heart of her motivation. Then, what continues for decades is duty. It is a strong bond that they have, but it’s a bond which is about solace as opposed to moving forward. Those elements are really potent.

MF: Finally, since you are playing the older version of Marion, did you work at all with Emma Corrin, who plays the younger version, to establish a connection between the two performance?

GM: Emma Corrin and I, because it was COVID protocols, we couldn’t physically meet. We were in separate bubbles. But we did talk on the phone. We also all had a collective Zoom conversation, which was quite extensive and that was really useful. We talked with Michael Grandage, our director, who became a brilliant conduit.

Also, I had the good fortune to look at about three or four of her scenes that Emma shot already, because they shot the 1950s stuff first. That was a brilliant resource. I also checked out as much as I could of Emma’s work and studied elements of the way she has a fantastic ability to watch and listen, and that comes across in her work enormously. So, those elements absorbed hopefully by osmosis. I found them really useful.

  • New Trailer For Romantic Drama ‘My Policeman’

    dEuC64E9

His name has been all over the headlines of late, mostly thanks to the behind-the-scenes and press conference drama around ‘Don’t Worry Darling’. But Harry Styles has more than one film looking to grab audiences – and potentially awards – this year.

And the new trailer for his other drama – forbidden love tale ‘My Policeman’ – has now arrived.

Spanning two time periods and following its three central characters at different ages, ‘My Policeman’ adapts Bethan Roberts’ novel. With Ron Nyswaner, the man behind such well-regarded movies as ‘Philadelphia’ and ‘The Painted Veil’ writing the script here, and direction from Michael Grandage, it’s certainly positioned as a premium, awards-season possibility.

The story is initially set in Britain in the 1950s. Police officer Tom (Styles), meets and falls for teacher Marion (Emma Corrin of ‘The Crown’). But while they’re very much in love, there’s a complication. Tom also starts a passionate relationship with museum curator Patrick (David Dawson).

Though it looks like he might be able to balance the two sides of his romantic life, the pressure it puts on them all threatens to tear their friendship apart.

And that’s never more evident then when the story moves to the 1990s (with Tom now played by Linus Roache, Marion by Gina McKee, and Patrick by Rupert Everett), where the three are still reeling with longing and regret, but now they have one last chance to repair the damage of the past.

Possibly even more than ‘Darling’ (where the acting workload is reportedly more on Florence Pugh than Styles), this will be the chance for Styles to prove that he’s got what it takes to carry a drama where he’s at the core of the story.

It’s hard to argue with the rest of the cast – Corrin has proved she’s got what it takes across screens big and small, while the likes of McKee, Everett and Roach are old hands at both drama and comedy.

Grandage, meanwhile, is more known for his stage directing, but he’s got some movie work on his resume (including 2016’s ‘Genius’) and from the looks of this, he’s crafted a layered, visually distinctive film. And, of course, he knows how to draw emotive, effective performances from actors.

With festival dates upcoming (see below), we’ll see how the movie goes over with initial audiences, though given its release being split between theaters and streaming, it’s likely not to have to worry so much about box office.

The cast for ‘My Policeman’ also includes Andrew Tiernan, Jack Bandeira, Tristan Sturrock, Kadiff Kirwan, Richard Dempsey, Maddie Rice, Dora Davis, and Michael Ayala-Cole.

Following premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival and the London Film Festival, the movie will be on limited release in theaters from October 21st before arriving on Prime Video on November 4th.
