  • Marvel Boss Names Films He’s Most Proud Of & MCU’s Biggest Disappointment

Even Marvel swings and misses sometimes.

“Captain America: Civil War” was an unqualified hit, and Marvel recently hosted an Academy Screening of the film for Oscars consideration. At the event, Marvel president Kevin Feige and directors Anthony and Joe Russo spoke about creating the Marvel Cinematic Universe hit — which launched Phase Three — and answered questions on the MCU at large.

Here’s an excerpt from Collider‘s highlights, with Feige revealing his pride in Phase One and (discreetly phrased) disappointment in Edward Norton as “The Incredible Hulk”:

Kevin Feige stated the Marvel films he’s most proud of are all the Phase One films. Before Phase One, Iron Man, Captain America , and Thor were secondary characters that nobody knew of and the press discounted – so the fact Marvel was able to re-introduce and popularize these characters was an achievement unto itself. When pressed on his biggest disappointment during his tenure at Marvel, Feige diplomatically sidestepped the question but did offer that, “Mark Ruffalo’ s Hulk portrayal set a lot of things right in a way that made us all very happy.”

So there’s a bit of a contradiction there, in that “The Incredible Hulk” was the second film in Phase One, after “Iron Man.” Mark Ruffalo didn’t joint the MCU as Bruce Banner/The Hulk until “The Avengers” — which is also in Phase One.

Here’s Phase One, by the way:

    Phase One: Avengers Assembled

    “Iron Man” (2008)
    “The Incredible Hulk” (2008)
    “Iron Man 2” (2010)
    “Thor” (2011)
“Captain America: The First Avenger” (2011)
    “Marvel’s The Avengers” (2012)

Back in July 2010, Kevin Feige gave a statement to HitFix on dropping Norton as The Hulk:

“We have made the decision to not bring Ed Norton back to portray the title role of Bruce Banner in the Avengers. Our decision is definitely not one based on monetary factors, but instead rooted in the need for an actor who embodies the creativity and collaborative spirit of our other talented cast members. The Avengers demands players who thrive working as part of an ensemble, as evidenced by Robert, Chris H, Chris E, Sam, Scarlett, and all of our talented casts. We are looking to announce a name actor who fulfills these requirements, and is passionate about the iconic role in the coming weeks.”

Well, they certainly found him, and Ruffalo’s Hulk will next be seen in “Thor: Ragnarok.”

  • Will Smith Talks to Love, Time, and Death in ‘Collateral Beauty’ Trailer

Collateral BeautyWhat if you could talk to Love, Time, and Death and confront them over how they’ve messed up your life?

That’s the premise of “Collateral Beauty,” which stars Will Smith as a grieving father who writes letters to those three things. Howard’s friends, including Kate Winslet and Edward Norton, are worried about him. Then, one day, Death (Helen Mirren) shows up after receiving his letters. So does Time (Jacob Latimore). He’s also visited by Love (Keira Knightley).

The trailer definitely has a sort of “ghosts of Christmases past” feel, with a bit of “It’s a Wonderful Life.” Meeting the trio of entities just might help Howard work out his grief. The movie looks heartbreaking and uplifting at the same time.

And that cast! Pretty much everybody is an Oscar winner or nominee. Oh, and that doesn’t even include Naomie Harris and Michael Peña! This is a seriously star-studded group of people.

“Collateral Beauty” opens in theaters December 16.

  • Top Movies That Launched Actors’ Careers

sandra bullock in speedIt’s the role all actors dream of — the one that puts them on the map. Breakout movie moments are born from a combination of factors, including raw talent, the movie’s reception, and a little bit of showbiz luck. When the elements are all there and the sun is shining just right, an actor can go from “Hey, didn’t I see her in …?” to household-name status in no time.

These performances are examples of movies that hit the “launch” button on an actor’s career. A couple of these performers may have had credits stretching back years before that defining role, but this was the one that made the entire industry and the movie-going public sit up and take notice. Read on to remember when six of the most bankable actors saw their careers take off.

Tom Cruise in ‘Risky Business’ (1983)

There’s a reason every Halloween party ever brings out one or more revelers in tighty-whities, a button-down shirt, and black Ray-Bans. “Risky Business” remains iconic more than three decades later. Tom Cruise was just 21 when he hit the big-time playing entrepreneurial Chicago teenager Joel Goodsen. The sexy dramedy established the persona that continued for much of the actor’s early career: mischievous, charming, and out to have a good time.

John Boyega in ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ (2015)

There aren’t many roles an actor can be offered that come with a guarantee of super-stardom. Star Wars movies create the exception to the rule. British actor John Boyega won the role of Finn, the defecting Stormtrooper with a heart of gold in the franchise reboot, “The Force Awakens.” He instantly became a hero to every kid (little and big) who ever sat in the front seat of a parked car and played “Millennium Falcon.”

Jodie Foster in ‘Taxi Driver’ (1976)

At 14, future Oscar winner Jodie Foster took on the role of Iris, an underage sex worker and object of the troubled Travis Bickle’s fixation in Martin Scorcese‘s classic noir “Taxi Driver.” With her beguiling combination of maturity and vulnerability, Foster’s performance earned her a spot in the hall of fame of gritty ’70s movie-making and jump-started a long and prestigious career both in front of and behind the camera.

    Sandra Bullock in ‘Speed’ (1994)

For better or for worse, the “America’s Sweetheart” designation fell on the shoulders of Sandra Bullock after one master class in defensive driving in “Speed.” As civilian Annie Porter, she helped SWAT officer Jack Traven navigate a speeding city bus through the streets of Los Angeles. Annie’s world-weary wise-cracking is the perfect complement to the characteristically understated delivery of co-star Keanu Reeves. And the joyride presented a strong enough case for reigning ’90s sweetheart Julia Roberts to share custody of her crown.

Edward Norton in ‘Primal Fear’ (1996)

Edward Norton‘s overwhelmed altar boy accused of the murder of a priest in “Primal Fear” seems like a perfectly respectable role … until his other side comes out. At 27, Norton earned his first Oscar nomination for unsettling audiences with the dual personality of Aaron Stampler. It’s the kind of showy part that lets an actor’s training and natural skill really shine through, and that shocker of an ending kept audiences talking about the film long after the credits rolled.

    Viola Davis in ‘Doubt’ (2008)

Now earning accolades for teaching a group of coeds “How to Get Away with Murder,” Viola Davis only appears in the tense drama “Doubt” for a few minutes. But what a few minutes it is. As the mother of a child who may be receiving undue attention from a priest, Davis makes the most of her single scene. The Academy Awards recognized her unflinching performance with a nomination, and experienced actor Davis earned the name recognition necessary to send her to the front of the class.

  • Best of Late Night TV: Benedict Cumberbatch’s Honeymoon, Edward Norton’s SNL Complaint (VIDEO)

If you’re like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don’t worry; we’ve got you covered. Here’s the best of what happened last night on late night.

Jimmy Kimmel had a busy Monday night, in part because he was honeymooning with Benedict Cumberbatch. Benedict got married in England on Saturday, then showed up for “Jimmy Kimmel Live” on Monday night. Jimmy said his own wife didn’t want to spend their honeymoon with him, so he was flattered. Jimmy brought out some pina coladas so they could have a more festive honeymoon feel, then shared some wedding gifts. “Then later,” Jimmy added, “we’ll make love.” Benedict and his wife are expecting their first child and Jimmy suggested a baby name. Benedict also discussed “Sherlock” and “The Imitation Game” and where he was when he learned he was nominated for an Oscar. Stana Katic (flawless!) was on JKL, talking about her non-profit initiative, ATP, and how her “Castle” co-star Nathan Fillion helped her cut her shirt for the show’s test pilot. Bachelor Chris Soules was also on JKL in some funny sketches. Chris confronted Jimmy about their connection. Why did Jimmy send him home and start seeing other guests? Jimmy also recapped last night’s Bachelor and Chris came out to explain his bad joke. Jimmy wanted Chris to spoil the show and reveal which woman will have to live in that town that looks like the one from “The Walking Dead.” Edward Norton played Stefon in an SNL cameo during “Saturday Night Live’s” 40th anniversary special. He had an issue, though, with how he was presented on Weekend Update, feeling like they used the “Hobbit cam” on him to make him look much shorter than Bill Hader. He’s 6-feet-tall, but he looked tiny next to Hader. He thought maybe it was the way comedians get back at dramatic actors. Jimmy Fallon recapped SNL’s 40th Anniversary, sharing some behind-the-scenes stories. Major name dropping, but interesting! Matthew Perry was on “Late Show with David Letterman” talking about “Odd Couple” and his favorite joke. He did his Walter Mathau impression, then a little Dustin Hoffman impression. Matthew also talked about his workout routine. Angie Harmon was on “Late Night with Seth Meyers” and she shared an embarrassing Lorne Michaels run-in, from around her first year at “Law & Order.” Thomas Lennon is guest hosting “Late Late Show” and he talked to “Weird Al” Yankovic about Weird Al’s experience as guest editor for Mad Magazine.

  • Best of Late Night TV: Blake Shelton’s Whisper Challenge and Felicity Jones’s Oscar Reaction (VIDEO)

If you’re like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don’t worry; we’ve got you covered. Here’s the best of what happened last night on late night.

Country crooner Blake Shelton is known for his melodious voice, so naturally Jimmy Fallon made him play Whisper Challenge on “The Tonight Show,” a game which basically involved Blake complaining and having no idea who Benedict Cumberbatch is. Quote: “I’ve never even heard of that.”

We’re in the midst of Deflate Gate (The Patriots are being accused of deflating some footballs, sigh), and Edward Norton visited Jimmy Kimmel to sound off on this extremely important topic. In other words, enjoy lots of “ball play” jokes.

“The Theory of Everything’s” Felicity Jones stopped by “Late Night” to talk about how she found out about her Oscar nomination. Turns out she woke up at 4 a.m. and anxiously sat around in her pajamas for an hour and a half waiting to hear her name called. Hey, at least she’s honest!

Finally, Ron Howard swung by Conan to talk about…wait for it…how he almost had a career as a porn director. This clip speaks for itself.
