Disney’s “Jungle Cruise” is now filming. Yes, it’s based on the Disney theme park attraction. Because why not — it worked for “Pirates of the Caribbean.”

Emily Blunt and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson are the two top stars, and they shared a funny play-fighting set video to show off the production:

In the movie, directed by Jaume Collet-Serra (“The Shallows”), The Rock plays boat captain Frank, who takes a sister (Emily Blunt) and brother (Jack Whitehall) on a mission to find a tree believed to possess healing powers. At the same time, the trio must fight dangerous wild animals and a competing German expedition. Edgar Ramirez and Jesse Plemons play two villains in the film, which also stars Paul Giamatti as a “crusty harbormaster.”

“Jungle Cruise” actually started production back in May, and The Rock shared an Instagram video at the time, sharing his nerves about signing the biggest contract of his life:

“Jungle Cruise” is scheduled to open in theaters October 11, 2019. Emily Blunt is also “Mary Poppins,” y’all, and that Disney movie opens this December 19.

  • Dwayne Johnson Addresses ‘Disappointing’ ‘Fast and Furious’ Feud With Tyrese

Dwayne Johnson Addresses ‘Disappointing’ ‘Fast and Furious’ Feud With Tyrese

The Rock, The Fate of the Furious
    Universal Pictures

You shouldn’t feel too sorry for The Rock that he’s still being asked about various “Fast and Furious” feuds, since he did start this whole thing.

Dwayne Johnson was just on “Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen” to promote his new movie “Skyscraper.” But fans are still curious about the various “Fast” franchise beefs, so he was asked about last year’s back-and-forth with Tyrese Gibson.

The Rock launched this feud game himself during filming for “The Fate of the Furious” in 2016, calling out the male “candy asses” on the “Fast 8” set. He was vague. He launched speculation and rumors. He knew it, and seemed proud of it.

That initial post was largely about Vin Diesel, but “Fast” costar Tyrese Gibson decided two could play the game. So he launched his own Instagram feud with The Rock. That feud was about The Rock delaying the filming and release for “Fast 9” so that The Rock and Jason Statham could film their “Hobbs and Shaw” spinoff.

So here’s what a fan called into WWHL to ask Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson:

“Have you and Tyrese talked since he called you out on Instagram, after you agreed to do your own ‘Fast and Furious’ spinoff?”

    Here’s Johnson’s response:

“Great question. And the answer is no. No, we haven’t talked at all. And, you know, that whole thing with Tyrese, it was pretty disappointing. ‘Cause I’ve been friends with Tyrese for a very long time. I always feel like a beef requires two people to actually jump in it, and it was pretty one-sided. He had voiced his opinions a lot on social media. And apparently he was going through some stuff too in his personal life. But no, we haven’t talked, and I don’t see where we would. I mean, there’s no need to have a conversation.”

Andy Cohen then randomly volunteered that Tyrese is very afraid of owls.

The Rock’s “Hobbs and Shaw” movie did push back “Fast 9.” The spinoff is scheduled to open August 2, 2019, with “Fast & Furious 9” scheduled for April 10, 2020.

Meanwhile, “Skyscraper” is now in theaters and just had a very sad opening weekend. Maybe it’s time The Rock stopped acting like his own Marvel Cinematic Universe with multiple movies a year?

  • ‘Hotel Transylvania 3’ Topples ‘Skyscraper,’ Which Dies Hard in Third-Place Opening

‘Hotel Transylvania 3’ Topples ‘Skyscraper,’ Which Dies Hard in Third-Place Opening

    Skyscraper, Dwayne The Rock Johnson
    Universal Pictures

    OUCH.

The Drac Pack was on the attack at the spooky July 13 weekend box office .

Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation took first place with $44.1 million. That puts it in the middle of its own Pack, ahead of the first movie’s $42.5 million, but behind the second film’s $48.4 million opening.

So that’s fair for the franchise, even if it’s nowhere near as big an opening as “Ant-Man and the Wasp” last week.  Still, that sequel’s $76 million opening was considered soft for a Marvel Studios movie. It’s all relative.

Speaking of Ant-Man and the Wasp,” Scott Lang and Hope van Dyne took second place in their second weekend, with $28.8 million.

That put Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s Skyscraper in third place with a really sad $25.5 million. That’s the lowest opening for The Rock in a long time. And it’s off an estimated $125 million production budget.

On a more positive note, the big blockbuster money these days is made overseas. The international box office should help a lot, and it has already picked up $40.4 million on that front.

The rest of the top 10 at the mid-July box office went to returning films.

Incredibles 2 took fourth, beating Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom again, but only but about $1 million (just like last week!). Sixth place went to “The First Purge,” with Sorry to Bother You surging to No. 7 after a boost of 789 more theaters. That’s a 485.5 percent jump from last week, where it took No. 16. Well done. Wow.

Eighth place went toSicario: Day of the Soldado,” followed byUncle Drew,” with Ocean’s 8 rounding out the top 10.

    Annapurna Pictures

In case you’re curious, Avengers: Infinity War is still on the chart, now at No. 16 with $588,000. Deadpool 2 took No. 15 with $800,000. Solo: A Star Wars Story is still picking up under-the-couch-seat coins at No. 19 with $390,000.

You have to head to No. 21 to find another new film, “Eighth Grade,” which picked up $252,000 from only four theaters. Another new film, “Soorma,” opened to No. 24 from 50 theaters to earn $168,000. Joaquin Phoenix’s “Don’t Worry He Won’t Get Far on Foot” opened in four theaters to No. 27 with $83,120.

    What’s next?

Friday, July 20 gives us “The Equalizer 2” and the “Mamma Mia!” sequel, with “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” following on July 27.

  • Dwayne Johnson Threatened to Quit ‘Rampage’ Over Original ‘Sad Ending’

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson basically spoiled the ending to every movie he’ll ever make.

He knows his brand, and his audience. He’s not exactly aiming to fill Daniel Day-Lewis’ shoes. He’s an action hero, with an emphasis on hero, and he wants to save his audience from feeling bummed out.

Johnson has a new profile in Rolling Stone, sharing his philosophy when it comes to showing the audience a good time. A good time means no sad endings.

“No one’s going to see me play a borderline psychopath suffering from depression. I have friends I admire, Oscar winners, who approach our craft with the idea of ‘Sometimes it comes out a little darker, and nobody will see it, but it’s for me.’ Great. But I have other things I can do for me. I’m gonna take care of you, the audience. You pay your hard-earned money – I don’t need to bring my dark sh*t to you. Maybe a little – but if it’s in there, we’re gonna overcome it, and we’re gonna overcome it together.”

That philosophy almost led him to quit “Rampage” and tell them to get another actor for the role.

    Mild SPOILER ALERT for “Rampage.”

Johnson revealed that the original “Rampage” script ended on a much darker note. Here’s that section of the Rolling Stone profile:

“So the script comes in, and I’m reading it,” Johnson says. “And at the end of it – George dies! I’m like, ‘No. Did I miss something? George can’t be dead.’ But I go back, and yeah.”

Johnson says this moment became “the number-one topic of discussion” between himself, the director and producers, and the studio. “I don’t like a sad ending,” he says. “Life brings that sh*t – I don’t want it in my movies. When the credits roll, I want to feel great.” His concerns went up the chain of command, and “we had a big meeting where they gave me all the reasons they thought George should die,” he says. “He sacrifices himself saving the world. Killing these animals who had ill intentions to harm mankind. He sacrifices himself like a brave soldier. OK. But this is a movie! There’s a crocodile the size of a football stadium – we’re not making Saving Private Ryan.”

“Dwayne rarely digs in, but on this he was very adamant,” Flynn says. “It was back and forth for about two months.”

According to Johnson, it was about more than just George. “My problem is I have a relationship with an audience around the world,” he says. “For years I’ve built a trust with them that they’re gonna come to my movies and feel good. So every once in a while, you have to drop this card, which is: You’re gonna have to find another actor. We need to figure something out, otherwise I’m not gonna do the movie.”

In the end, they landed on a compromise that made both sides happy. But everyone agrees that Johnson had the right instinct. “He understands the audience and his relationship with the audience better than anyone,” Peyton says.

“That’s Dwayne’s genius,” says Flynn. “And watching it with an audience, he was 100 percent right.”

    As Collider noted:

“This is incredibly fascinating insight into the ‘Dwayne Johnson Brand.’ … In an era where movie stars have been replaced by franchises and known IP, Johnson has keenly established a brand in which he himself is the IP—people come to Dwayne Johnson movies to see Dwayne Johnson. It doesn’t always work out, as evidenced by ‘Baywatch,’ but in addition to solid hits like ‘Central Intelligence’ you get something like ‘Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle,’ which becomes a worldwide phenomenon.”

Many people do want to head to a popcorn movie for a good time, not a deep time. But audiences have proven from “Game of Thrones” to “Lord of the Rings” — and “Titanic,” once the highest-grossing movie in the world — that they are completely on board for big-budget movie/TV storylines that run the gamut of emotions from A to Z, not just A to B+.

But now we know that’s just not the Dwayne Johnson way, so you don’t have to worry that you’ll ever be bummed out by any of his action movies. Instead of comfort food, it’s comfort kick-ass.

    “Rampage” is now in theaters.

  • The Rock’s ‘Skyscraper’ Looks a Lot Like ‘Die Hard’ to Fans (and That’s OK)

Plus, this one has Neve Campbell!

Super Bowl 2018 was packed with TV and movie trailers, amid the many commercials and — or so we heard? — a football game.

One of the trailers was for Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson‘s latest action movie, “Skyscraper.” The title and poster tell you everything you need to know…

But if you’re curious for more, the trailer fills in the blanks:Fans saw a lot of familiar themes, especially one in particular. Not that there was anything wrong with that.

    Here’s the official synopsis:

“Global icon Dwayne Johnson leads the cast of Legendary’s Skyscraper as former FBI Hostage Rescue Team leader and U.S. war veteran Will Sawyer, who now assesses security for skyscrapers. On assignment in China he finds the tallest, safest building in the world suddenly ablaze, and he’s been framed for it. A wanted man on the run, Will must find those responsible, clear his name and somehow rescue his family who is trapped inside the building…above the fire line.

Written and directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber (Central Intelligence, We’re the Millers), the 3D action-thriller is produced by Beau Flynn (San Andreas, Baywatch), Johnson, Thurber and Hiram Garcia (San Andreas, Central Intelligence).

Skyscraper’s executive producers are Dany Garcia (Baywatch, Ballers), Wendy Jacobson (San Andreas), Eric McLeod (Kong: Skull Island, Pirates of the Caribbean series) and Eric Hedayat (The Great Wall, Real Steel). The film will be released by Universal Pictures.”

    “Skyscraper” opens this summer.

  • Vin Diesel Was the Top-Grossing Star of 2017 (The Rock Was Second: Feud Karma?)

    FILES-ENTERTAINMENT-US-FILM-OFFBEATTake that, “candy asses”!

“The Fate of the Furious” made headlines for the on-set feud between Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Vin Diesel, and they took the top two spots on Forbes’ list of the top-grossing actors of 2017. Both ranked that high thanks to the Fast 7 sequel, but Diesel had the edge because “xXX: The Return of Xander Cage” did a bit better at the global box office than “Baywatch.” However, The Rock’s “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” is still in theaters and that will add to his final tally.

This list of the highest-grossing stars at the worldwide box office includes both genders, and there are three women in the top 10. Forbes calculated its rankings by adding up “the 2017 global ticket sales of major actors’ films as of December 26th, 2017, using data from Box Office Mojo.” They didn’t count animated movies where only actors’ voices were used, and only included actors who were top-billed or had the most screen time. This list should also not be confused with the highest-paid movie actors, although there’s definitely some overlap.

    Here’s Forbes‘ top 10 of 2017:

    10. John Boyega, global box office: $815 million
    9. Chris Hemsworth, $845 million
    8. Chris Pratt, $864 million
    7. Tom Holland, $888 million
    6. Daisy Ridley, $1.08 billion
    5. Johnny Depp, $1.1 billion
    4. Emma Watson, $1.3 billion
    3. Gal Gadot, $1.4 billion
    2. Dwayne Johnson, $1.5 billion
    1. Vin Diesel, $1.6 billion

As you might expect, the top 10 is filled with Star Wars, Disney, Marvel, Harry Potter, and DC superhero stars. Interesting, though, that the top two spots went to the “Fast” franchise.

Last year, Scarlett Johansson dominated the list with a $1.2 billion box office take from “Captain America: Civil War” and “Hail Caesar!” If they had included voice roles, she would’ve been much higher, thanks to both “The Jungle Book” and “Sing.” This year’s tally is higher overall, with four stars’ projects earning more than Johansson’s films. We’ll have to see how the 2018 list ends up; here’s guessing Chris Pratt takes No. 1, between “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.”

  • ‘Fast’ Money: Tyrese Gibson Says Will Smith Just Gave Him $5 Million ‘to Help Keep Us Afloat’

Premiere Of Warner Bros. Pictures' 'Focus' - Red CarpetUPDATE: Will and Jada have yet to weigh in on this themselves, but TMZ claims “sources directly connected to both Will and Jada” say they haven’t given Tyrese $5 million. However, “Will and Jada have been friends with Tyrese for years, and we’re told they’re extremely worried Tyrese is having some sort of a breakdown.” That’s a fair thing to worry about. Tyrese did update this week that he hadn’t received his money from Will Smith yet, but he still seemed to be expecting it.

    Original post:

There’s nothing like a $5 million bailout from Uncle Will! But was it enough for Tyrese Gibson to forgive The Rock for the “Fast 9” delay?

Tyrese has been deep in his feelings lately, due to some personal issues with his ex-wife and their custody battle over their daughter. Charges of child abuse against him were dropped, but before that happened, Tyrese posted some emotional videos on Instagram. He also tied the issues to the “Fast and Furious” franchise, lashing out at Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson for pushing his own Hobbs spinoff and delaying “Fast 9.”

Apparently Tyrese really needed that “Fast 9” money, and interpreted The Rock’s move as selfish and taking away from his family. He posted that he wouldn’t be in “Fast 9” at all if Johnson was still involved. “You mess with family and my daughters survival I mess with yours.” He later cropped The Rock out of a photo with Paul Walker, then said he had a heart-to-heart with one of Johnson’s associates and swore that was his last post on The Rock.

It seemed like the bottom line was money — legal fees are expensive. Even though Tyrese has been making money for years in the “Fast” and “Transformers” franchises, he didn’t seem to have enough to cover his own bills.

Since he has a lot of rich and famous friends — even beyond the “Fast” family — you’d think he could just ask them for help. Turns out, he either did, or one just volunteered on his own, because Tyrese said his friends Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith stepped up to bail him out.

Wouldn’t we all love to have friends who’d give us $5 million to “keep us afloat”?

LaineyGossip pointed out the greater irony in Tyrese’s post, considering he was asked to step away from the Internet, and said he would, but he’s still posting:

“So, Will and Jada gave Tyrese FIVE MILLION dollars to keep his business off social media and to get his life together. Then, the first thing he does is post this information on Instagram. Do the Smiths get their millions back?”

Hopefully Uncle Will’s generous gift will keep Tyrese’s family afloat until “Fast 9” starts filming for its April 2020 release.

  • The Rock Approves of ‘The Rock Test’ for Men in the Workplace: ‘Check It Out & Take It’

89th Annual Academy Awards - Red CarpetCan you imagine having Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in your office? That’s exactly what he’s suggesting, by way of a clever, playful article from Medium called “The Rock Test: A Hack for Men Who Don’t Want To Be Accused of Sexual Harassment.”

The post, by Anne Victoria Clark, plays off a different angle of the Harvey Weinstein sex scandal:

“Are you a man confused on how to treat the women you work with? Do you feel like if you can’t say or do *anything* you don’t know what to say or do at all? Well stress no more! This life hack will have you treating women like people in no time.”

From Harvey Weinstein to like all of Uber, it seems each day a wealthy and powerful man is being brought down by accusations of sexual harassment or assault. And just today the New York Times reported that men are becoming less likely to mentor females out of fear. […]. While navigating professional relationships can often require that dreaded thing known as ‘any amount of work at all’, there is hope. You see, by following this one simple rule, you too can interact with women as people.

It’s as clear cut as this: Treat all women like you would treat Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson.”

The author then (at least half jokingly) lists workplace scenarios that might be super-tricky for horny straight guys, but could be solved by just imagining female co-workers as The Rock.

The story found its way to The Rock himself, and he approved the message:

Many fans appreciated the Medium post, and The Rock’s support, although others missed the point entirely. It’s a good thing The Rock isn’t really in everyone’s workplace or he might go around calling us “candy asses” when we don’t hustle on the job. Then again … OK, that’s another good argument for The Rock in the workplace. There are no downsides.

  • Vin Diesel Defends ‘Fast 9’ Delay: ‘The Franchise Is in Need of Maintenance’

'Fast & Furious 8' Madrid PhotocallVin Diesel says it’s “unfair” to blame any one person (*cough*TheRock*cough*) for the “Fast 9” delay, arguing “the franchise is in need of maintenance,” and now they have the time for it.

Diesel is clearly trying to bring the “Fast” family back together after Tyrese Gibson’s very public (but also very one-sided) feud with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Tyrese has posted several times, openly blaming The Rock’s Hobbs spinoff for the delay of “Fast 9” delay; he tagged The Rock and producer Hiram Garcia when writing, “I guess dreams do come true congratulations to @hhgarcia41 and @therock you guys are just amazing you really broke up the #FastFamily…”

Diesel had posted a photo with Tyrese and Paul Walker, seeming to back Tyrese in his public attacks. However, he followed that with this “Brotherhood” photo alongside The Rock. In the new post, he addressed the “complexities” of the “Fast” family, but also teased “some very exciting news to share soon.”

Brotherhood… and all it’s complexities. This scene was filmed in Puerto Rico, I can remember it like it was yesterday. Such a beautiful island, the people were so warm and welcoming. I turned 43 that summer… and my son Vincent was born. A woman named Jan Kelly responded to a question I had asked on Facebook, ‘who they would like to see me work with?’ She said would love to see me work with Dwayne… I listened to her request and he became Hobbs. I know there has been a lot of speculation as to why the Fast 9 release date was pushed… but it would be unfair to say it is anyone’s fault. As we plot the course to expand the Fast & Furious universe, one must be mindful to take stock of the roads we took to get here. The pillars of authenticity, family and most importantly, our loyal fan’s perspective has been instrumental in procuring success. However, like any vehicle that has run around the globe 8 times, the franchise is in need of maintenance. My good friend and the godfather of Universal, Ron Meyer has granted me the time to do just that. We have some very exciting news to share soon… stay tuned. Yours truly, Dom #FamilyAlways

A post shared by Vin Diesel (@vindiesel) on

After that post, he shared this one with on-screen wife Michelle Rodriguez:

    The Torettos…

A post shared by Vin Diesel (@vindiesel) on

It’s possible the “maintenance” and “exciting news” have to do with Rodriguez’s complaint that there hasn’t been enough for the women to do after eight movies in the franchise. Either way, fans are on standby for some good news on the “Fast 9” front.

“Fast 9” was scheduled to open in 2019 but that was pushed to 2020. The spinoff with The Rock and Jason Statham will now open in 2019.

  • Mark Wahlberg Is 2017’s Highest-Paid Actor in the World

Transformers The Last Knight Global PremiereMark Wahlberg just delivered a smackdown to Dwayne Johnson, dethroning The Rock to take the top spot on Forbes’s annual list of the world’s highest-paid actors. Both men earned more than $60 million in the last year, though, so there’s no need to feel too sorry for Johnson.

Wahlberg raked in an impressive $68 million from June 2016 through June 2017, thanks to headlining roles in big franchises like “Transformers” and the forthcoming “Daddy’s Home 2.” Johnson, meanwhile, is still sitting pretty on Forbes’s list, filling the second slot with a cool $65 million in take home pay, earned from his roles in big screen features like “Baywatch” and the upcoming “Jumanji,” as well as his HBO series “Ballers.”

The rest of the top five is filled out by Vin Diesel (third place, with $54.4 million), Adam Sandler (fourth place, with $50.5 million), and Jackie Chan (fifth place, with $49 million). Also included on Forbes’s list are returning actors Robert Downey Jr., Samuel L. Jackson, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Pratt, and Chris Evans, and newcomers Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, and Ryan Reynolds. The moral of the story? It’s a pretty lucrative gig starring in a Marvel movie.

Check out the full list — featuring a jaw-dropping earnings total of $720 million — over at Forbes.
