Zendaya is one of the most popular young actresses working today.

After beginning her acting career on Disney Channel sitcoms like ‘Shake It Up,’ Zendaya burst on to the silver screen with appearances in hit films like ‘The Greatest Showman,’ ‘Smallfoot‘, ‘Space Jam: A New Legacy‘ and ‘Challengers‘, not to mention her work on HBO‘s poplar series ‘Euphoria‘.

But she is probably best known for playing Michelle “MJ” Jones-Watson in the MCU movies ‘Spider-man: Homecoming‘ and its sequels ‘Spider-Man: Far from Home‘ and ‘Spider-man: No Way Home‘, as well as Chani in ‘Dune‘ and ‘Dune: Part Two.’

Her newest movie, ‘The Drama‘, which also stars Robert Pattinson, opens in theaters on April 3rd.

In honor of Zendaya’s new film, Moviefone is counting down every movie the popular actress has ever appeared in, including her latest.

NOTE: For this list we are only including Zendaya’s theatrical films, and not documentaries, TV Shows, or music videos like Beyoncé‘s ‘Lemonade‘.

    Let’s begin!

    • ‘Peaky Blinders’ creator Steven Knight is the write the next Bond movie.
    • Denis Villeneuve is in the director’s chair.
    • There’s still no word on a new Bond.

The pieces appear to be quickly falling into place for the new James Bond outing, the first since stewards Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson formally handed creative control to Amazon MGM Studios.

We already know that ‘Dune’ director Denis Villeneuve will be the filmmaker charged with bringing 007 back to screens following the effective slate wipe that was Daniel Craig’s final outing, ‘No Time to Die’.

Now, Deadline reports that Steven Knight, creator of TV drama ‘Peaky Blinders’ and writer of movies including ‘Locke’, ‘Eastern Promises’ and ‘Maria’, has taken the scripting job.

    t2LDmhxeMukS9jf1dBOkc3

Knight is a fascinating choice –– while he has produced some truly great (and occasionally Oscar-nominated) work, he’s also had a few whiffs, such as ‘Serenity’ and ‘Locked Down’. But he is certainly an interesting person to work alongside Villeneuve on Bond.

Interviewed on BBC Radio 5 about the new job, Knight had this to say:

“It has always been on my bucket list, and it’s fantastic to be invited to do it — I can’t wait to get started. I’m hoping that, being a Bond fan for so many years, it will be imbued into me and I will be able to produce something that’s the same but different, and better, stronger and bolder.”

He also admitted that he had no idea why producer Amy Pascal wanted to meet him until the big announcement that she and ‘Harry Potter’ veteran David Heyman would be shepherding Amazon MGM’s Bond efforts:

“I very quickly discovered what it was about and became very excited and hopeful. And then the process is…you do some meetings, you discuss some ideas, and then you find out you’ve got it. I found out a while ago, but it was announced last night, which is great. It’s a high pressure job, but you’ve just got to do what you do, do it as well as you can.”

That’s the next big question that fans are looking to answer.

We’ve had a wealth of names speculated about since Craig hung up his holster and downed his last martini (and, er –– spoiler alert for ‘No Time to Die’ –– let’s not forget was blown up by a missile).

In that time the likes of Idris Elba, Theo James, Richard Madden, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Henry Cavill have all been mooted, with Tom Holland, Harris Dickinson and Jacob Elordi among the current crop of candidates.

Yet the main name in the mix seems to be Aaron Pierre, who has impressed in ‘The Underground Railroad’, ‘Foe’ and particularly ‘Rebel Ridge’ where he proved his action/drama chops.

Pierre will next be seen in DC/HBO series ‘Lanterns’.

When will the new Bond movie be on screens?

With Villeneuve currently busy preparing to make the third ‘Dune’ outing (that one is scheduled for December 16th, 2026), we wouldn’t expect to see a new Bond much before 2027 at the earliest.

    • Denis Villeneuve is directing the new James Bond movie, which doesn’t immediately sound like the perfect fit.
    • As a lifelong Bond fan, choosing Denis Villeneuve puts the future of the franchise in good hands.
    • If nothing else, Denis Villeneuve will make the most visually stunning James Bond movie.

It was recently announced that Denis Villeneuve is going to be directing the new James Bond film, after control was handed over to Amazon MGM. While the internet is debating on if he is right for the job or not, there are a lot of things that make him the perfect choice, but a couple concerns as well.

    t2LDmhxeMukS9jf1dBOkc3

Not a lot is known about the next film, including which actor will be portraying the title character. Denis Villeneuve is busy with the upcoming ‘Dune: Messiah‘ which releases in December 2026 meaning it might be a while until we hear more details about this movie. Chances are the new 007 movie will not start filming until ‘Dune: Messiah’ is in post-production, although the script and casting should be completed before then.

Fans are looking at a late 2026 or early 2027 release at the earliest. That definately feels like a long time after 2021’s ‘No Time To Die‘.

Denis Villeneuve Has A Love For The Franchise

James Bond (Daniel Craig) prepares to shoot in 'No Time To Die,' a Metro Goldwyn Mayer Pictures film.
James Bond (Daniel Craig) prepares to shoot in ‘No Time To Die,’ a Metro Goldwyn Mayer Pictures film.

Probably the most exciting aspect of this decision is that Denis Villeneuve has admitted that he grew up watching the James Bond films. They hold a special place in his heart and he went so far as to call them sacred territory so he knows what he needs to accomplish. And if anyone can do it, it is him.

Often when a director is passionate about a franchise before they are welcomed into it, they want nothing more than to create a perfect addition to it. This is something that Denis Villeneuve has dreamed of, making it unlikely he would do anything that would anger the fans.

He knows what works and what doesn’t in a James Bond movie, and he is certainly willing to put in the work. No one has ever claimed that Denis Villeneuve doesn’t know what he is doing, so odds are he will put everything he has into making the next James Bond movie something special. Why take on the responsibility of something like this, especially a franchise you love, and phone it in?

This Could Be The Most Visually Stunning Bond Movie With Denis Villeneuve At The Helm

With Denis Villeneuve in the director’s chair for the new James Bond movie, there is a good chance this is going to be the most beautiful of the franchise. As exciting as this is, here is where one of the concerns comes in. No one is doubting that with Denis Villeneuve involved this movie is going to look beautiful, as we have seen him win multiple awards for visual effects and cinematography, but you need more than that for a successful film.

His visual style doesn’t exactly scream James Bond. At least not at first thought. Denis Villeneuve is known for sweeping landscapes, desaturated tones, and extremely well done special effects. These are all things that the new James Bond movie could thrive off of, but it might take long time fans a bit longer to get used to it.

Blade Runner 2049‘ is a great example. The film might have been a box office disappointment, but it is also applauded for its incredible visuals and world building. It found its audience at home after some were skeptical about Denis Villeneuve being at the helm and a need for another movie.

The new James Bond movie will not have this problem, however, as it is already a well established franchise. Odds are fans will be showing up in theaters no matter what, although that also depends slightly on who the next James Bond actor is.

Denis Villeneuve Is Widely Considered One Of Today’s Best Working Directors

Of course there were fans of ‘Dune‘ before Denis Villeneuve’s films, but he introduced it to so many people all around the world in a way that caused them to explore the world further: reading the books, seeing the previous film, and so on. His work drew people in and created new fans, which is something that he could do for the James Bond franchise as well, something Amazon MGM surely thought about.

Denis Villeneuve has a way of adapting and growing already established projects, like ‘Dune’ and ‘Blade Runner‘. He often remains faithful enough to the original, but still adds something new and exciting. He knows how to build tension and create worlds and characters that will leave viewers mesmerized.

James Bond already has a well established fan base, but it still needs the next movie to be good, well-respected, and an entertaining watch. Denis Villeneuve is going to bring his A-game because of his love for the character. He is well versed in the films so there is no need to think he will change what makes James Bond so beloved. Surely we are all in good hands.

At least one mystery surrounding the future of the Bond franchise can be laid to rest alongside the villains that our hero has killed in his years of service: we know who will direct the next 007 movie after the long hiatus following ‘No Time to Die.’

That filmmaker? None other than ‘Dune’ overseer Denis Villeneuve, according to Amazon MGM Studios.

    t2LDmhxeMukS9jf1dBOkc3

It might sound like a surprise –– and not least because of the filmmaker’s current busy schedule –– but despite his love of putting his stamp on projects, he’s worked comfortably in the blockbuster/franchise space before –– besides the ‘Dune’ movies, there was ‘Blade Runner 2049’.

Villeneuve is now part of a team that already includes producers David Heyman and Amy Pascal, and executive producer Tanya Lapointe (who has worked with Villeneuve for years).

Here’s what Villeneuve had to say on the news:

“Some of my earliest movie-going memories are connected to 007. I grew up watching James Bond films with my father, ever since ‘Dr. No’ with Sean Connery. I’m a die-hard Bond fan. To me, he’s sacred territory. I intend to honor the tradition and open the path for many new missions to come. This is a massive responsibility, but also, incredibly exciting for me and a huge honor. Amy, David, and I are absolutely thrilled to bring him back to the screen. Thank you to Amazon MGM Studios for their trust.”

And here’s Mike Hopkins, head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios:

“We are honored that Denis has agreed to direct James Bond’s next chapter. He is a cinematic master, whose filmography speaks for itself. From ‘Blade Runner 2049’ to ‘Arrival’ to the ‘Dune’ films, he has delivered compelling worlds, dynamic visuals, complex characters, and — most importantly — the immersive storytelling that global audiences yearn to experience in theaters. James Bond is in the hands of one of today’s greatest filmmakers and we cannot wait to get started on 007’s next adventure.”

Finally, Heyman and Pascal weighed in on the decision:

“Denis Villeneuve has been in love with James Bond movies since he was a little boy. It was always his dream to make this movie, and now it’s ours, too. We are lucky to be in the hands of this extraordinary filmmaker.”

Previously, such other well-known directors including Edward Berger, Edgar Wright, Chris Nolan, Paul King and Alfonso Cuarón have been rumored for the job, but now Villeneuve will segue from spice to spycraft.

The Amazon MGM movement comes, of course, after the surprise decision by 007 stewards Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson to hand the reins of the franchise over to the company for a hefty pay day.

    Talking of…

Bond handover: the studio and producers’ comments

Daniel Craig as James Bond in 'Casino Royale.'

This was Wilson’s comment at the time:

“With my 007 career spanning nearly 60 incredible years, I am stepping back from producing the James Bond films to focus on art and charitable projects. Therefore, Barbara and I agree, it is time for our trusted partner, Amazon MGM Studios, to lead James Bond into the future.”

    And crucially, Barbara Broccoli:

“My life has been dedicated to maintaining and building upon the extraordinary legacy that was handed to Michael and me by our father, producer Cubby Broccoli. I have had the honour of working closely with four of the tremendously talented actors who have played 007 and thousands of wonderful artists within the industry. With the conclusion of ‘No Time to Die’ and Michael retiring from the films, I feel it is time to focus on my other projects.”

Broccoli and Wilson stepping back is perhaps less of a surprise these days since she in particular has expressed frustration with the Amazon deal. And this way, the duo will have some small say in the future, but also enjoy what is surely a healthy payday.

It’s not entirely surprising, since The first ‘Dune’ released day-and-date on streaming in 2021 amid the pandemic, earned $410 million globally, while 2024’s follow-up brought in $714.6 million globally.

But while Villeneuve looked to be pivoting to another big movie, he’s since confirmed that his focus is now the next ‘Dune,’ likely ‘Dune: Messiah,’ adapting the next book in Frank Herbert’s sprawling novel series.

The actor, known for the ‘Twilight’ franchise and a host of other work since (including the title role in ‘The Batman’) is the subject of interest from Villeneuve and backers Legendary for a key role.

We’d be remiss at this point, if we didn’t point out that this is far from a done deal; in fact, no offer has been made. Yet The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Pattinson is circling the role of the chief villain in the film, one that is possibly Scytale from the Herbert stories.

In case you’ve never cracked the books, he’s a Tleilaxu Face Dancer who participates in the conspiracy to topple the rule of Paul Atreides.

The new ‘Dune’ would continue the story of Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides, who has a powerful and dark destiny to become ruler of the various worlds.

Villeneuve has been clear, however, that this won’t be the third part of a trilogy.

This is what the director said last year:

“First, it’s important that people understand that for me, it was really a diptych. It was really a pair of movies that will be the adaptation of the first book. That’s done and that’s finished. If I do a third one, which is in the writing process, it’s not like a trilogy. It’s strange to say that, but if I go back there, it’s to do something that feels different and has its own identity.”

Villeneuve has been working on the script with regular collaborator Jon Spaihts.

Who will be in ‘Dune: Messiah’?

Given where the story goes, it’s seemingly a given that stars Timothée Chalamet, Florence Pugh and Zendaya will all return, since Paul Atreides, Princess and Irulan and Chani all feature in the ongoing narrative, not the least because their love/power triangle will be a key part of it.

Also likely to come back? We’d expect Anya Taylor-Joy‘s Alia Atreides: Paul’s sister, a powerful figure in the Bene Gesserit, who was in just one scene in ‘Dune: Part Two,’ but has an expanded role to play going forward.

Plus Javier Bardem’s Fremen leader Stilgar.

    And that’s not all…

Who else will –– spoiler alert! –– be back for the third ‘Dune’ movie?

Jason Momoa in 'Dune'. Photo: Warner Bros.

We’re putting this one in its own section, since it constitutes a spoiler and we don’t want anyone who hasn’t read the ‘Dune’ books to have their enjoyment curtailed.

During a recent interview, Jason Momoa revealed that his sword master and mentor Duncan Idaho would be back for the new movie, despite his character dying in the first one.

Here’s what Momoa said on ‘Today’:

“I’m making a comeback. You heard it first, right here with you, baby! Well, I’m not sure if I’m going to get in trouble or not, but it’s the same thing like ‘Game of Thrones’, you know what I mean? If you didn’t read the books, it’s not my fault, right? Yeah, there’s going to be… I’m going to be coming back.”

For the record, and again, spoiler alert: in one of the later books of Frank Herbert’s series, Duncan comes back as a clone.

What else is Robert Pattinson working on?

Pattinson was most recently on screens in Bong Joon Ho’s new sci-fi satire ‘Mickey 17’ about a man who serves on a spaceship who is replaced with a clone of himself every time he dies on board. The film was not a success at the box office.

He’s also worked on Lynne Ramsey’s new comedy horror drama ‘Die, My Love,’ opposite Jennifer Lawrence and has filmed romantic movie ‘The Drama.’

Right now, the actor is at work on Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ for Universal.

And, of course, there is his other big Warners job, Matt Reeves’ long-gestating ‘The Batman’ sequel, which should kick off filming at the end of this year, though it has been through several delays already while Reeves works on the script.

But if Pattinson is able to squeeze in a trip to Arrakis –– assuming he does lock into the movie –– this summer, that would mean him being on set for three giant movies this year alone.

When will the third ‘Dune’ movie touch down in theaters?

Neither Warner Bros. nor Legendary has made any statement about the release date for the new movie.

While Warners had been holding a December 2026 slot for a Villeneuve movie, but that would seem a very tough turnaround for something on the level of a ‘Dune,’ especially when production is only scheduled for later this summer. But watch this space!

The movie, which will focus on famed singer Ronnie Spector’s life with husband and powerhouse producer Phil Spector, has been in development for some time now.

It first emerged as a possibility in 2019, where it seemed headed for 20th Century Fox before the company’s merger with Disney shut down forward movement on the rights.

Since then, it has been picked up by A24, which partnered with New Regency to produce it. Marc Platt, Adam Siegel, Mark Itkin, Tom Shelly and Zendaya are producing, while Jonathan Greenfield (Spector’s manager and second husband) is an executive producer.

Spector herself personally anointed Zendaya as the person she wanted to play her, much as Aretha Franklin endorsed Jennifer Hudson for her own biopic, ‘Respect.’

The deals for Spector’s life rights and for ‘Be My Baby,’ the memoir she wrote with Vince Waldron are still in place. And while Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Jackie Sibblies Drury had been sounded out about the script when the movie was first announced, David Kajganich, who wrote Luca Guadagnino’s films ‘A Bigger Splash,’ ‘Suspiria’ and ‘Bones and All,’ is currently at work on a draft.

According to Deadline, this team-up for Jenkins and the ‘Dune’ and Euphoria’ star has been something they’ve both been looking to make happen for some time.

    Who was Ronnie Spector?

Born Veronica Bennett on August 10, 1943, in the Bronx, Spector began singing professionally in junior high and formed the Darling Sisters with her sibling Estelle Bennett and their cousin Nedra Talley in 1958. The group signed its first label deal with Colpix Records in 1961, and moved to Phil Spector’s Philles Records two years later, changing their name to the Ronettes.

After breaking out with “Be My Baby,” the group had a moderate follow-up hit with “Baby, I Love You.” A couple of minor hits later, “Walking in the Rain” hit No. 23 in late 1964. All seven of their Hot 100 singles were produced by Phil Spector.

Most of those songs — including “(Best Part of) Breaking Up” and “Do I Love You?” — were on the 1964 LP “Presenting the Fabulous Ronettes Featuring Veronica,” which peaked at No. 96 and would be their only charting album.

The Ronettes were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007, three years after they joined the Vocal Group Hall of Fame. They counted Bruce Springsteen and Brian Wilson among their famous fans.

She was married to Phil Spector between 1968 and 1974, decades before he would be convicted of second-degree murder in the 2003 death of actress Lana Clarkson.

After Phil Spector’s death in 2021, Ronnie called him, “A brilliant producer but a lousy husband.”

Spector herself died in 2022 from cancer.

Upon her passing, Spector’s family released the following statement:

“Our beloved earth angel, Ronnie, peacefully left this world today after a brief battle with cancer. She was with family and in the arms of her husband, Jonathan. Ronnie lived her life with a twinkle in her eye, a spunky attitude, a wicked sense of humor and a smile on her face. She was filled with love and gratitude. Her joyful sound, playful nature and magical presence will live on in all who knew, heard or saw her.”

What else has Barry Jenkins worked on?

Jenkins made a name for himself with 2008’s ‘Medicine for Melancholy’ but really broke out big with ‘Moonlight’ in 2016, which went on to win the Best Picture Oscar (after ‘La La Land’ had been mistakenly announced).

He also made ‘If Beale Street Could Talk’ in 2018, and most recently directed ‘Mufasa: The Lion King,’ a prequel to the 2019 Disney photorealistic version of the animated classic.

On the small screen, he was the showrunner and director for ‘The Underground Railroad,’ which arrived on Prime Video in 2021.

Where else can we see Zendaya?

Next up for the busy actor is Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey,’ which has just started shooting and stars Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway and approximately half of Hollywood.

She’ll also reportedly (though it has yet to be officially confirmed) be back as MJ in the next ‘Spider-Man’ movie, which will also see Holland reprising his lead role as Peter Parker in the latest outing for the Marvel character, to be directed this time by Destin Daniel Cretton.

Those two giant movies are due in 2026, but she’s also worked on Kristoffer Borgli’s romantic movie ‘The Drama’ alongside Robert Pattinson. That doesn’t have a confirmed release date, but should be on screens this year.

Meanwhile, there is her much-anticipated return to HBO series ‘Euphoria,’ which has finally started shooting its third season and looks likely to be on screens next year.

When will ‘Be My Baby’ be in theaters?

A24 has yet to announce a release date for the movie, which is not shocking since it’s still being written.

    • Marianne Faithfull has died aged 78.
    • She was known for work in both music and movies.
    • Her history also included high-profile relationships with the likes of Mick Jagger

Marianne Faithfull, a stalwart of the 1960’s social scene in London who built a career as a singer, songwriter and actor, has died. She was 78.

Her long and distinguished career saw her emerge and celebrated as one of the most original female singer-songwriters the UK produced; known for her unsentimental yet somehow affectionate songs, she brought personal power to lyrics, transforming them into something compelling and utterly personal.

Faithfull’s family released a statement on her passing:

“It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of the singer, songwriter and actress Marianne Faithful. Marianne passed away peacefully in London today, in the company of her loving family. She will be dearly missed.”

Marianne Faithfull: Early Life and Career

Born in Hampstead in December 1946, her father, Major Robert Glynn Faithfull, was a British intelligence officer and professor of Italian Literature at Bedford College of London University.

Her mother Eva had been a ballerina for the Max Reinhardt Company during her early years and danced in productions of works by the German theatrical duo Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill.

Faithfull spent some of her early life at the commune at Braziers Park, Oxfordshire, formed by John Norman Glaister, where her father, who was instrumental in its foundation, lived and participated.

Her parents divorced when she was age six, after which she moved with her mother to Reading, Berkshire.

    Marianne Faithfull: Music

Faithfull began her singing career in 1964, landing her first gigs as a folk music performer in coffeehouses.

She soon began taking part in London’s exploding social scene, the so-called “Swingin’ Sixties.” In early 1964 she attended a Rolling Stones launch party with artist John Dunbar and met Andrew Loog Oldham, who “discovered” her.

‘As Tears Go By’ her first single, was written and composed by Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, and Oldham, and became a chart success –– The Rolling Stones recorded their version one year later, which also became a hit. She then released a series of successful singles, including ‘This Little Bird,’ ‘Summer Nights,’ and ‘Come and Stay with Me.’

During this period, her personal life became tabloid fodder. She began a much-publicized relationship with Mick Jagger and left Dunbar (who she’d married in 1965) to live with him. She was heard on The Beatles’ song ‘Yellow Submarine,’ and was found wearing only a fur rug by police executing a drug search at Redlands, Keith Richards’ house in West Wittering, Sussex.

Talking in later years about her drug habits, she admitted it hurt her career.

“It destroyed me. To be a male drug addict and to act like that is always enhancing and glamorizing. A woman in that situation becomes a slut and a bad mother.”

Though she would still struggle with substances, Faithfull went on to have a memorable music career that spanned different genres.

Faithfull emerged tentatively in the mid-Seventies with a country album called ‘Dreamin’ My Dreams.’ Though the album attracted little attention in the UK, it was a huge hit in Ireland, where the title track spent seven weeks at number one and led to her going back on the road for the first time in a decade, but it was her furious re-surfacing on ‘Broken English’ in 1979 that definitively brought her back.

The virginal pop persona created around her in the Sixties was defiantly smashed: Instead with songs like ‘The Ballad of Lucy Jordan,’ ‘Guilt’ and ‘Why D’ya Do It?’ Faithfull re-invented herself and her style Further new wave explorations followed with ‘Dangerous Acquaintances’ and ‘A Child’s Adventure.’

In 1987, she released the critically lauded collection of classic pop, blues and art songs on the ‘Strange Weather.’ A live retrospective followed on ‘Blazing Away’, which displayed why Faithfull became one of the most sought after UK concert artists of the last 35 years.

New directions were taken on ‘A Secret Life’ co-written with the Italian composer Angelo Badalementi, and in her exploration of the music of Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht.

    Marianne Faithfull: Movies

Faithfull carved out a side career as an actor.

She appeared at London’s Royal Court in an adaptation of Chekhov’s ‘Three Sisters,’ alongside Glenda Jackson.

She became the first person ever to utter the F-word in a mainstream film, ‘I’ll Never Forget What’sisname,’ in 1967.

A year later, she starred opposite Alain Delon, as a doomed, leather-clad beauty in ‘The Girl on a Motorcycle.’ Her character’s psychedelic and erotic fantasies saw the film win the first ever X-rating in the United States.

Other movie appearances included ‘Shopping,’ ‘Crimetime,’ ‘Intimacy,’ ‘Marie Antoinette,’ ‘Faces in the Crowd,’ and, most recently, her recognizable voice is included as one of the Bene Gesserit Ancestors in ‘Dune: Part One.’

    7thbcSA05uOgIrM2FDpWL

And, of course, her music has appeared on a host of other soundtracks.

In recent years, she teamed up with songwriters like PJ Harvey and Nick Cave, who each cited her as an inspiration.

While her personal life may have overshadowed her music and movies at time, Faithfull will still be remembered as something of a pop cultural icon.

    • Film visionary David Lynch has died aged 78.
    • The four-time Oscar nominee was known for his bold, sometimes divisive work.
    • He had been diagnosed with emphysema.

David Lynch, one of the singular voices of American cinema in the last few decades, has died. He was 78.

Lynch, who brought strange visions and complicated characters to the screen in his various movies and TV efforts, was known for dreamlike ruminations and left-turns. And in recent years, for providing a daily broadcast featuring weather reports –– just because.

He revealed last year that he had been diagnosed with emphysema after a lifetime of smoking and would likely not be able to leave his house to direct any longer. He was forced to relocate from his house due to the Sunset Fire and then his health took a turn for the worse.

Lynch’s family released a statement on his passing:

“It is with deep regret that we, his family, announce the passing of the man and the artist, David Lynch. We would appreciate some privacy at this time. There’s a big hole in the world now that he’s no longer with us. But, as he would say, ‘Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole.’ It’s a beautiful day with golden sunshine and blue skies all the way.”

David Keith Lynch was born on January 20th, 1946, in Missoula, Montana the son of a research scientist father with the U.S. Forest Service, who moved the family frequently during Lynch’s childhood.

Art was always on Lynch’s mind. His early ambition was to become a painter, and, after graduating from high school in Alexandria, Virginia, he enrolled at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. He later studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.

There he created his first film, a 60-second animation entitled ‘Six Men Getting Sick’ in 1967, for an experimental painting and sculpture contest. In 1970 Lynch became a student at the American Film Institute’s Center for Advanced Film Studies (later the AFI Conservatory), where he worked on a variety of short films before he embarked on his first feature film, ‘Eraserhead.’

Shot over a period of a few years, the hallucinatory film starred Jack Nance as Henry Spencer, who tries to survive his industrial environment, his angry girlfriend, and the unbearable screams of his newborn mutant child.

It baffled and repelled critics and many viewers, but it eventually became a cult favorite on the midnight movie circuit. It also established his commitment to uncompromising style and concepts.

David Lynch: On the big screen

One person who appreciated ‘Eraserhead’ at a midnight show at L.A.’s Nuart Theatre was Stuart Cornfeld, a producer at Mel Brooks’ Brooksfilms. He encouraged Brooks to employ Lynch, and, after viewing the film, Brooks offered the director a job.

Lynch took on the story of John Merrick, whose sensational life story had already inspired Bernard Pomerance’s hit 1977 play. The film version of ‘The Elephant Man’ forged a new path on the story, co-written by Lynch and starring a heavily made-up John Hurt as the sensitive Merrick, Anthony Hopkins as the London Hospital surgeon who became his guardian, and Brooks’ wife Anne Bancroft as a sympathetic West End stage star.

The movie had a powerful emotional impact and became a box office and critical hit; Lynch received Oscar nods as best director and for best adapted screenplay, with the film also taking a nomination for best picture.

‘The Elephant Man’s success led to a multi-picture deal with producer Dino De Laurentiis, the first of which was sci-fi misfire ‘Dune,’ an attempt to bring Frank Herbert’s sprawling novel series to the screen.

    15679

Yet his second film for De Laurentiis would define the contours of his style. ‘Blue Velvet’ starred Kyle McLachlan, who had played the messianic hero of ‘Dune,’ as a small-town boy who is plunged into a whirlpool of sexual violence, murder and sadomasochism.

Among his other cinematic achievements? 1990’s ‘Wild at Heart,’ 1997’s ‘Lost Highway’ and 1999’s distinctly different ‘The Straight Story,’ which saw Richard Farnsworth as Alvin Straight, a farmer who rides a lawnmower across country to visit his ailing brother. The movie landed Farnsworth an Oscar nomination.

Movies such as ‘Mulholland Drive’ and ‘Inland Empire’ were more in line with his unique visions, and while he didn’t direct a movie after ‘Inland Empire,’ he kept his hand in with shorts and video productions.

He leaves behind a legacy that will only grow in acclaim.

David Lynch: ‘Twin Peaks’ and TV

In 1990, Lynch revolutionized American network TV with ‘Twin Peaks,’ created with writer Mark Frost. Following the investigation of a high school girl’s mysterious murder in a Washington lumber mill town, the weekly ABC show explored disquieting, taboo subject matter and brought the inexplicable to modern narrative television.

A major hit in its first season, ‘Twin Peaks’ lost its momentum and ultimately its audience in its second.

    MPiHsOC0DTAlGA5nz3Iez4

However, it spawned a feature-length prequel, 1992’s ‘Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me’ and 25 years later, the ongoing affection of a loyal cult of fans sparked a limited-run third season for Showtime that picked up where the second season left off.

Lynch was rarely fond of digging into the meaning of his work, as this passage from the book ‘Lynch on Lynch,’ written with Chris Rodley, shows:

“Imagine if you did find a book of riddles, and you could start unraveling them, but they were really complicated. Mysteries would become apparent and thrill you. We all find this book of riddles and it’s just what’s going on. And you can figure them out. The problem is, you figure them out inside yourself, and even if you told somebody, they wouldn’t believe you or understand it in the same way you do.”

Though he was more normally happier behind the camera, Lynch did end up making a variety of appearances in front of it, not the least his regular video updates.

He would pop up in his own work (mostly notably in ‘Twin Peaks’) and also in the films and shows of others, including ‘The Fabelmans,’ and lending his voice to the shows of Seth MacFarlane.

Launching on HBO and Max on Sunday, November 17th with its first episode, this six-episode new series is set in the recognizable portrayal of ‘Dune’ as established by director Denis Villeneuve with his two epic movies.

Yet it’s also different enough –– partly because it’s set 10,000 years before those films takes place and has a decidedly alternate viewpoint –– that it succeeds in being a worthwhile supplement to the movies and boasts an impressively epic scale.

Long shelved on the list of titles deemed “unfilmable,” Frank Herbert’s sci-fi epic novel ‘Dune’ has been brought to screens before –– David Lynch tried it in the 1980s with his mostly unsuccessful effort, while Denis Villeneuve has seen a lot more critical praise (not to mention box office power and awards) for his own 2021 effort, which led to this year’s follow-up.

But in an era where studios and other media companies long to keep the cash cows mooing, a couple of films years apart was never going to be enough. Hence, the TV spin-off, adapted from 2012 novel ‘Sisterhood of Dune’ by Herbert’s son Brian and prolific genre author Kevin J. Anderson, who have continued the series.

Fortunately, ‘Dune: Prophecy’ ranks among the better supplement series, spotlighting a different chunk of the ‘Dune’ timeline and, as the novel’s title (and original title for the show, ‘Dune: Sisterhood’) suggests, a fresh perspective on the history and power struggles inherent in the story.

While the ‘Dune’ movies certainly boast impressive and impactful women, including Zendaya’s Chani and Rebecca Ferguson’s Lady Jessica Atreides, they have skewed more towards the masculine side of the story, with Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides the anchor.’

‘Prophecy’ instead forefronts Emily Watson’s Valya Harkonnen and sister Tula, who are looking to maintain the fledgling power of the mysterious Bene Gesserit movement, which seeks to guide the powerful houses of the imperium while also battling to restore their family’s honor.

‘Dune: Prophecy’ has not been without its challenges –– it has gone through at least one team on its way to screens (the executive producer credits are an archeological dig through previous showrunners), but developers Diane Ademu-John and Alison Schapker (with Schapker as the current overseer of the series) have managed to bring the story to life successfully.

Like Villeneuve’s movies, there is still the chilly air of plot over character at times, but the expansive running time of six episodes means there is certainly more room for development of the characters themselves.

Probably the best way to describe this new show is ‘Dune’ crossed with ‘Game of Thrones,’ as the story (set 10,000 years before the events of the movies) has familiar themes of jockeying for power that the films use as a backdrop for its tale of a messiah and its action. Here, those machinations are front and center, the Bene Gesserit order leading the way in plotting the future of the empire by pulling strings through breeding programs and setting themselves up as advisors to the leaders of the great houses.

The scripts are meaty and work well in context –– this certainly feels like it belongs in the ‘Dune’ movie universe but isn’t just more of the same.

Similarly, the direction of the show establishes a visual style that is akin to the ‘Dune’ films, yet has its own personality, set in chilly palaces and featuring water much more as a motif than the dusty dunes of Arrakis (though there is a key plot point/character whose story have their roots in the familiar desert locale).

Main director Anna Foerster sets the tone and style early on, and the four episodes given to press certainly don’t dip in quality on that front.

Oh, but as with ‘Game of Thrones’ there are the occasional moments (which fall away as the season moves on) where it feels like HBO pressure to deliver exposition while people have sex.

    ‘Dune: Prophecy’: Performances

Though it features two powerful central figures (and fantastic actors playing them), the show never feels overbalanced.

    Emily Watson as Valya Harkonnen

Watson is in her element here, playing the imperious and crafty, yet believably driven Valya, who both wants to make sure the Bene Gesserit’s mission stays intact but also has plans to restore her family to what she sees as its rightful position of power.

The actor is excellent as this sort of role, as Valya comes to life in way that is truly satisfying.

    Olivia Williams as Tula Harkonnen

Like her co-star, Williams delivers a commanding, if more vulnerable performance. Whereas some shows might have sidelined Tula, ‘Prophecy’ finds plenty for her to do as she takes over running the Bene Gesserit school in her sister’s absence.

Williams is trusted with some great moments and carries them all off.

    Travis Fimmel as Desmond Hart

Fimmel plays a man whose motivations we won’t talk about too much so as to avoid spoilers, but suffice to say he’s a soldier with a secret, and he’s seeking to win favor from the emperor –– oh, and he’s no fan of Valya and her sect. His subtle yet burning charisma is a good counterpoint to the more mannered, colder performances of some of the other main cast.

    Sarah-Sofie Boussnina as Princess Ynez

Boussina’s princess is a key part of the early going –– daughter of the Emperor, she’s a prospect for a house-uniting marriage, which goes badly in a way nobody quite sees coming. The young actor brings spirit and attitude to her role.

Mark Strong as Emperor Javicco Corrino

Strong is having a good run on HBO of late, between this and his role on ‘The Penguin.’ Here, his emperor is a man who is concerned that he’s inherited all his power and is sometimes unsure how to wield it. He can be led by others, but Strong brings him to complicated life.

    Other notable characters

The various young women who attend the Bene Gesserit school all have their own personalities, and a couple come into play well in the main storyline.

A worthy companion to the big screen offerings, ‘Dune: Prophecy’ shares a few of its weaknesses but finds its own strength in the characters and the welcome amount of time it has to develop them.

With only four episodes of the six available, it’s hard to tell if it’ll stick the landing of the first season, but the signs are good so far.

‘Dune: Prophecy’ receives 7.5 out of 10 stars.

    • Anne Hathaway and Zendaya are the latest additions to the mystery film.
    • They join Matt Damon and Tom Holland.

With the first pieces of casting now seemingly in place –– that would be Matt Damon and Tom Holland, who are both now aboard –– ‘Oppenheimer’ director Christopher Nolan is adding to the cast for his next project.

And the new additions, like Damon and Holland, represent a reunion and a new recruit, as Anne Hathaway (who worked with the filmmaker on both ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ and ‘Interstellar) and Zendaya, best known for the likes of ‘Dune’ and the ‘Spider-Man’ movies (which also happen to star one T. Holland) are joining the movie, per Deadline.

As with everything to do with Nolan, the title, plot and even genre are a mystery at this point. Nolan is not a man to release loglines easily, and his level of creative control means that, short of an unauthorized leak, no information will be out there until he’s ready.

There had been some chatter a few years ago about the writer/director looking at adapting cult British series ‘The Prisoner’ for the big screen, but this is apparently not that.

More recent rumors have pointed to a film inspired by movie and TV seriesBlue Thunder,’ which was about a sophisticated police helicopter in Los Angeles. Yet Deadline’s sources say that idea is also off the mark (unless Nolan is trying to hide it!)

Hathaway has David Robert Mitchell’s mystery thriller ‘Flowervale Street’ and David Lowery’s music drama ‘Mother Mary’ both in post-production aiming for release next year.

She’s attached to James Gray’s new crime thriller ‘Paper Tiger,’ and there has been consistent talk of a third ‘Princess Diaries’ movie coming together –– though that is still rumor for now.

Zendaya has had a busy and successful 2025 and is at work on Kristoffer Borgli new romantic pic ‘The Drama.’ Her future includes the next Spider-Man movie alongside Holland and a return to the ‘Euphoria’ set for the long-delayed third season, which is hopefully filming next year.

While the filmmaker had been based for years at Warner Bros., the company’s decision to put much of its 2020 slate on streaming saw him take his business elsewhere.

The rights to ‘Oppenheimer’ were put up for auction, a bidding battle that Universal ultimately won and reaped the rewards when the movie became a huge sensation.

Nolan was clearly happy without things worked out in collaboration with the studio, as he’s gone right back to it for this new project, which, like ‘Oppenheimer,’ will shoot in the IMAX format.

When will Chris Nolan’s next movie be in theaters?

Universal and IMAX have planted a flag in a July 17th, 2026 release slot for the new movie.
