  • This Is Why You Really Need to Watch ‘Black Mirror’

jon hamm in black mirrorIt’s somewhat safe to say that technology has in many ways taken over our lives. Depending on one’s use of it, the various screens that we look at on a daily basis have the potential to influence what we read, what we see, what we watch and even what we know to be true. But at the end of the day, when you turn your phone or computer or television off, all you have is a black mirror starring back at you. And that, in an of itself, is incredibly dangerous.

At least, that’s what Black Mirror” (available on Netflix) delves deep into the potential repercussions of a technology-reliant world through highly suspenseful, hour-long episodes.

The ideas presented in the series really run the gamut, from a political leader forced into a compromising position with an actual pig by an anonymous online threat, to a new service that allows people to reconnect with the dearly departed through the use of their loved one’s social media back catalog. It may seem like I’m being vague in my descriptions, but it’s necessary; to spoil the plot of a “Black Mirror” episode, with all of its winding twists and turns, is really a capital offense, worthy of a punishment like the one inflicted in the vicious season two episode “White Bear.”

Much like a modern-day “Twilight Zone,” each episode is independent of the others, with a rotating who’s who cast of stars including Allen Leech of “Downton Abbey” and “The Imitation Game,” “Agent Carter” star Hayley Atwell, and Domhnall Gleeson of “Ex Machina” and the upcoming “Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens.” Even Don Draper himself, Jon Hamm, appears in the decidedly un-jolly Christmas special.

“Black Mirror” is certainly not for the faint of heart. Its plot twists often fall on the more disturbing side, leaving an unsettling feeling that doesn’t quite go away when the episode ends. But perhaps that’s necessary. Perhaps that feeling is what we need to stop ourselves from getting to the point where these technology-fueled stories seem like more than just a fun, fascinating, fictional tale. Regardless, “Black Mirror” is yet another excellent way to spend time staring at a screen. Trust me, you won’t regret it.

  • ‘Downton Abbey’ Will End After Season 6: Report

the cast of Downton AbbeyDownton Abbey,” and now comes word on why that might be: The PBS drama will end after its upcoming sixth season.

TVLine reports that the Emmy-winning series will come to an end after the next batch of episodes airs, noting that the move came down to logistics. The site writes:

The decision to end Downton was mostly a practical one – the cast’s contracts expire at the end of Season 6 and, with one or two possible exceptions, the actors are ready to move on.

“You can keep the show going without Matthew and Sybill, but you can’t continue it without the entire Crawley family,” an insider notes.

Parent company NBC Universal had no comment on TVLine’s report. Stay tuned for an official announcement about “Downton”‘s end (and when season six may premiere).

  • Will Lily James Return to ‘Downton Abbey’? She Kind of Wants the Worst For Lady Rose

When you’re already a princess, who wants to go back to just being a “lady”? Lily James is the new “Cinderella,” which topped the weekend box office. However, she also plays Lady Rose on “Downton Abbey.” In the most recent Season 5 finale, Lady Rose married Atticus and went off to start a life with him. So … was that it? Between press for “Cinderella” and Rose’s story, have we seen the end of Lily at Downton?

Not if the actress can help it. “I’m really hoping to come back,” Lily told Zap2it during the “Cinderella” press junket. “I feel like it’s definitely going to happen,” she said, but noted that it depends on what Julian Fellowes decides to write for Season 6, plus “other things,” presumably her own schedule.

Lady Rose is the free spirit of Downton, and she can jump into things without thinking. She and Atticus seem like a perfect match, but you never know. When asked what she’d like to see happen to her character, Lily laughed and said she didn’t know, but added, “Part of me wants her to like lose her sh-t and come back completely wrecked and a ruined woman, and part of me wants her to keep her happily ever after.”

Heavens! Well, Downton does house its share of tainted women, even if society may not know. The Dowager Countess would be appalled, but she won’t be around too much longer herself.

  • #TBT: Maggie Smith Through the Years

    %Slideshow-270443%
We can’t get enough of Dame Maggie Smith this week. For one, the accomplished British actress stars in the highly-anticipated “The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel,” which opens this Friday. She also made headlines when she revealed to The Sunday Times that she’s likely to leave “Downton Abbey” after next season. Ah, Dowager Countess, we will miss you…

Smith has had such a versatile career, wowing audiences in everything form Shakespeare to “Harry Potter” to “The First Wives Club,” so we thought today’s #TBT should be all about the Dame through the years. Flip through photos of Maggie Smith from the beginning of her career to now.

  • The Dowager Countess Is Leaving ‘Downton Abbey’

Downton AbbeyThe Dowager Countess’s days are numbered.

In an interview with The Sunday Times, “Downton Abbey” star Maggie Smith revealed she’ll likely leave the popular British drama after next season.

“They say this is the last one, and I can’t see how it could go on,” she said. “I mean, I certainly can’t keep going. To my knowledge, I must be 110 by now!”

When the series began, it was set in 1912; season 5, which just finished airing in the U.S., took place in 1924. Violet Crawley is probably well into her 80s. Filming for season 6 is currently underway.

Even creator Julian Fellowes seems to think it’s time to think about closing “Downton Abbey.” It’s not really my decision. “It won’t go on forever – I’m not a believer in that,” he told the New York Times. “But I can’t immediately now tell you where the end will be.”

Whenever it is, as the Dowager Countess would say, there won’t be a dull moment in that house.

  • You Can Stay at ‘Downton Abbey’

Highclere Castle, which is practically its very own character on the PBS show, is already open for walking tours, but now you can spring for your very own overnight stay at the on-site London Lodge. The Earl and Countess of Carnarvon have spent several years and plenty of cash renovating the buildings just north of the main estate.

London Lodge boasts a working fireplace, as well as more modern amenities like Wi-Fi and TV. It will be open for Valentine’s Day weekend, and then select weekends after the castle opens for tours on Easter. Rooms start at $540 a night. The fifth season of the show premieres in the US on January 4th on PBS.
