  • Man Calls for Austin Boycott Over ‘Wonder Woman’ Screening & the Mayor’s Response Is Classic

Premiere Of Warner Bros. Pictures' 'Wonder Woman' - Red CarpetIf Wonder Woman ever wants a new sidekick, she should call Austin, Texas mayor Steve Adler. (Side note: There’s something about Steves — Steve Trevor, Steve Rogers, and now Steve Adler.)

Austin’s Alamo Drafthouse is among the theaters planning to hold some women-only screenings of Gal Gadot‘s “Wonder Woman” to “celebrate a character who’s meant a great deal to women for close to eight decades.” That has garnered criticism from some people, and the most vocal critics have been male. They probably don’t want to attend the screenings — it’s pretty clear many of these guys will go out of their way to avoid any movies starring women, and view any request to see more than one female character in a movie or TV show as feminist propaganda — but they are still upset at what they perceive as hypocrisy.

One of those men wrote a letter to the mayor of Austin, and the mayor’s letter in response was a glorious mic drop.

Both letters are posted in full on Mayor Adler’s website. Here’s just a portion of what Richard A. Ameduri wrote to the mayor:

“I hope every man will boycott Austin and do what he can to diminish Austin and to cause damage to the city’s image. The theater that pandered to the sexism typical of women will, I hope, regret it’s decision. The notion of a woman hero is a fine example of women’s eagerness to accept the appearance of achievement without actual achievement. Women learn from an early age to value make-up, that it’s OK to pretend that you are greater than you actually are. Women pretend they do not know that only men serve in combat because they are content to have an easier ride. Women gladly accept gold medals at the Olympics for coming in 10th and competing only against the second class of athletes. Name something invented by a woman! […] Does Austin stand for gender equality or for kissing up to women? Don’t bother to respond. I already know the answer. I do not hate women. I hate their rampant hypocrisy and the hypocrisy of the “women’s movement.” Women do not want gender equality; they want more for women. Don’t bother to respond because I am sure your cowardice will generate nothing worth reading.”

Oh, but the mayor did respond to this gentleman, and here’s part of his response:

    “Dear Mr. Ameduri,

I am writing to alert you that your email account has been hacked by an unfortunate and unusually hostile individual. Please remedy your account’s security right away, lest this person’s uninformed and sexist rantings give you a bad name. After all, we men have to look out for each other!

Can you imagine if someone thought that you didn’t know women could serve in our combat units now without exclusion? What if someone thought you didn’t know that women invented medical syringes, life rafts, fire escapes, central and solar heating, a war-time communications system for radio-controlling torpedoes that laid the technological foundations for everything from Wi-Fi to GPS, and beer? And I hesitate to imagine how embarrassed you’d be if someone thought you were upset that a private business was realizing a business opportunity by reserving one screening this weekend for women to see a superhero movie.”

Read his full response for more, which includes this perfect “bless your heart” closing:

“And in the future, should your travels take you to Austin, please know that everyone is welcome here, even people like those who wrote that email whose views are an embarrassment to modernity, decency, and common sense.”

BOOM. Of course, this is not settling any debates and will hardly change the OG writer’s mind. Plenty of fans are still waging gender wars in comments across the Internet, with stars like Marvel’s Don Cheadle defending the screenings, and explaining from his perspective how they don’t represent a double standard.

  • Don Cheadle Facts: 9 Things You (Probably) Didn’t Know About the ‘Miles Ahead’ Star

%Slideshow-374206% Don Cheadle is best known for acting in films like “Hotel Rwanda,” “Crash,” and the Marvel movies. Now, he’s directing and starring in “Miles Ahead,” a biopic about the famous jazz musician Miles Davis.

  • Saoirse Ronan and Don Cheadle Might Be the Best ‘Catchphrase’ Players Ever

Sometimes it’s fun to watch painfully bad games of “Catchphrase” on “The Tonight Show,” but it’s also kind of a rush to see experts in action. Last night, Saoirse Ronan and Don Cheadle were those experts. The struggle was NOT real for either of them.

The actors brought their A-games against each other — the Irish actress (who had a broken finger) was paired with Jimmy Fallon, and the American actor worked with Steve Higgins. Saoirse and Jimmy only lost their rhythm a couple of times, and it wouldn’t have mattered in a less competitive match. Seriously, though, some of the clues weren’t that great, but it was like the pairs had their minds connected — like the Borg in “Star Trek.” Resistance was futile!

Gotta love the “Boom!” Don Cheadle yells after each successful guess. He was on the show to promote his new movie “Miles Ahead,” and the charming Irish lass talked about making her debut on Broadway in “The Crucible.”

  • Best of Late Night TV: Fallon Sings With Billy Joel and J.K. Simmons, Amy Landecker’s Humiliating Don Cheadle Story

Jimmy Fallon Sings With Billy Joel

“The Tonight Show” and, of course, The Piano Man sat at the piano to sing us a song. Jimmy Fallon jumped right in and they sang the Rolling Stones’s “Beast of Burden” together. Fallon’s Mick Jagger impression is still on point. Of course, Jimmy wouldn’t be Jimmy if he didn’t ham it up, and he went Full Jagger and got the audience to join in.

However, topping that is this impromptu performance of “The Longest Time” from Billy, Jimmy, Billy’s band, and actor J.K. Simmons — this was just during a commercial break as they shot some local promos:

Speaking of J.K. Simmons, the multi-talented “Whiplash” actor admitted that he accidentally head-butted Lupita Nyong’o when accepting his Oscar last year. He suggested Fallon go back and watch what happened in slow motion.
This is just a good nightmare at the Golden Globes story, whether you know who Amy Landecker is or not. She’s a star of “Transparent” but she was also in “House of Lies” and had a sex scene on that show with Don Cheadle. That’s the focus of her story on “Conan,” sharing what happened at last year’s Golden Globes. First, Amy talked about how she misunderstood how they were going to shoot that “House of Lies” sex scene, and they ended up shooting it three times, from behind, and she told her agent she never wanted to do another sex scene again, it was just too much. Fast-forward to the Golden Globes, her first time at the event, and she was all amped up and tried a little to hard to be cutesy and funny on the red carpet. So when she saw Don Cheadle talking to Jeffrey Tambor, she approached him and said, “Hey, Don, you remember me? You f–ked me up the ass three times.” Eek. The punchline: Don turned to her and said, “My kids are standing right behind me.” She turned, and not only were his kids there, his wife was there glaring at Amy with her arms crossed. So Amy started to cry right there on the red carpet. Jimmy Kimmel, always the smart a–, had his team go out onto the street and ask strangers to congratulate North Korea on their hydrogen bomb. The running theory was, if a question is asked cheerfully enough, Americans will respond to anything in a positive way. This has to be fake, or just editing misdirection and these poor people were being sarcastic or responding to something else. Anyone else miss “Parks and Recreation”? Retta told Seth Meyers she hears “Treat Yo Self” 10 times a day, which actually sounds like a low estimate. She also shared her own TV recommendations, listing the shows we should all be watching. Agree with a lot of her choices. Seth said “The Affair” is an “interesting” show to watch with his wife, since it leads to a lot of tense moments. “Mr. Robot” star Christian Slater talked about revisiting “True Romance” for a live reading with Patricia Arquette — and she showed up in full Alabama costume. That movie is so COOL. Besides, Floyd smoked the second page of the letter. #OldSchoolPitt James Corden is always game for a good time, so he had audience members play a game called “Fake or Flop,” checking to see if they could tell the difference between fake past movies and real ones. It’s hard to believe some of those movies really happened. The best part is just seeing James interact with the audience. He flips off a guy who thinks he looks like Kurt Russell and shames a fat Matt Damon. Jerry Seinfeld was on “The Late Show” and got a standing ovation and a chant of “Jerry” before doing some standup for about five minutes. Whenever Kathy Griffin is on the late night circuit, she disses Ryan Seacrest and she did it again, sharing more stories about their fake feud. The best part is how HARD Kimmel laughs everything. She also dinged Kimmel and shared Anderson Cooper stories, and revealed what happened about two weeks ago when she insulted “looney tunes” Sean Penn’s hair to his face.

  • Don Cheadle’s Miles Davis Will Head to Theaters

    Don Cheadle
    Don Cheadle

Don Cheadle and Sony Pictures Classics are going to be making sweet music together.

The studio has acquired the worldwide rights for “Miles Ahead,” the story of legendary jazzman Miles Davis — and the directorial debut for Cheadle, it was announced Wednesday.

“Miles was many things… a supreme artist and a national treasure but also an enigma to those around him, especially during his so-called quiet period,” says Cheadle, who also plays Davis. “With the family’s blessing and Miles’ tenets on creativity as our guide, we used these cloistered years as a jumping off point to compose the story of a self-exiled artist creating his own ‘centrifugal adventure’ to spin himself back into playing music again.”

“Miles Ahead” premieres Oct. 11 at the New York Film Festival.

A nationwide theatrical release date has not been announced, but it is expected to hit theaters this fall.

  • Best of Late Night TV: Obama Calls Trump With Advice, Meryl Streep’s Guitar Lesson, ‘Flinch’ Game

If you’re like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don’t worry; we’ve got you covered. Here’s the best of what happened last night on late night.

Since Gawker leaked Donald Trump’s phone number, “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” did a bit where President Obama called Trump with debate advice. Cue Jimmy’s impressive impression of The Donald and his constant interruptions and number dumping: Trump: “I don’t understand, why would you want to help me become president?” Obama: “Uh, because it’d be hilarious? Look, I’ve been president for eight years, I’m ready for some entertainment. I just want to grab some popcorn, sit back, and watch this whole sh-tshow go down.” Haha. Watch the whole video for their “Cheerleader” duet. Please say it’s true that Trump’s debate will indeed be auto-tuned. Meryl Streep was on “The Tonight Show” to promote her new movie “Ricki and the Flash.” She didn’t get to say too much because Jimmy dominated the conversation with his gushing, but she told Jimmy she used to think she looked fat and had a weird nose in old films. She was tough on herself, like many women can be. Looking back, she thinks “my god, what was my problem?” In the second video, talking about the movie, she said Neil Young gave her her first guitar lesson, and she described what it was like to play a failed rock star.

Jerrod Carmichael was also on “The Tonight Show” to talk about his new HBO special. He also gushed over Meryl Streep and said her career is so strong it could even survive a face tattoo. Test that theory, Meryl!
Matt LeBlanc, William H. Macy, and Don Cheadle were on “The Late Late Show with James Corden,” and it was magical. They played a game called “Flinch,” putting someone behind a glass barrier while others threw stuff at them, and it was their job not to flinch. Classic. The three actors all share a love of riding motorcycles. You have to love Don Cheadle’s explanation of how he got his ride. James proposed the four of them start a “mean” motorcycle gang and they were down for it. “Fantastic Four” star Miles Teller was on “Late Night with Seth Meyers” to talk about the movie. Miles admitted he was not a comic book fan before being in F4, but it was his dad’s favorite comic book.
Seth got into the game act with a fun quiz called “Fortune Cookie or True Detective Quote?” playing off the ridiculous dialogue in the HBO show. They really nailed the tone.
Conan drank some Truth Serum and “couldn’t lie” after that point. So Andy Richter asked him a series of questions. What did he really do over the break? The Food Network and Mike’s Hard Lemonade are involved. “If someone made a movie about your genitals, what would it be called?” “Ant Man.”
Ice-T and Coco were both on “Conan” and she’s 5.5 months pregnant with a baby girl, but still barely showing. She said her boobs somehow got even bigger and she has to lift them up. Conan said he and Andy are always there for her.

  • Best of Late Night TV: Snoop Dogg’s Plizzanet Earth and Craig Robinson’s Jam Session (VIDEO)

If you’re like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don’t worry; we’ve got you covered. Here’s the best of what happened last night on late night.

Time for another addition of Plizzanet Earth with Snoop Dogg, who stopped by “Jimmy Kimmel Live” to muse on –– what else? An enormous cold-blood seal humping an innocent penguin. It goes without saying that his profound thoughts are not to be missed. Also, why hasn’t Animal Planet picked up this show yet?

Kelly Ripa also stopped by “Kimmel,” and Jimmy shared a super old-school clip of her chatting about how men and women should alternate paying for dinner. Sigh, a progressive feminist even when rocking an 80s perm and a turtleneck, guys. Also, please prepare yourself for the best dance moves you’ve ever seen.

Time for a game of Word Sneak on “The Tonight Show!” This week’s contestant was comedy legend Martin Short, who had to work random words into a casual conversation with Jimmy Fallon. Our favorites include Bill Paxton, fishsticks, enchiladas and back hair.

Mae Whitman visited “Late Night” (sob, RIP “Parenthood”), and told Seth Meyers that she’s made out with not one, not two, but three “Friday Night Lights” cast members. Living the dream, to be honest.

Over on “Late Show,” Don Cheadle chatted about the first time he went to The Oscars and was told by some angry paparazzi to “get the f–– out of the way” because Cher and Jack Nicholson were coming through. Honestly, it’s a realistic hazard of trying to share the spotlight with Cher.

Finally, Craig Robinson, Clark Duke and Adam Scott teamed up on “Conan” to play a live rendition of the song from Flashdance…only with customized lyrics about “Hot Tub Time Machine 2.” It was literally, utterly and completely amazing. And no, those electric guitars are not plugged in.

  • Best of Late Night TV: Jennifer Lopez’s Controversial ‘Catchphrase,’ Benedict Cumberbatch’s New Names (VIDEO)

If you’re like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don’t worry; we’ve got you covered. Here’s the best of what happened last night on late night.

Jennifer Lopez was on “The Tonight Show” Monday night, and a couple of interesting things happened. For one, she and Jimmy Fallon played “Catchphrase” opposite actor Anthony Mackie and comedian Steve Higgins. They were all pretty amazing, and ultra competitive, although there were a few uncalled cheating incidents for the winning side. Just saying. (JLo, you were robbed.) That’s a key discussion in the comments, if you click on the video – that and the distraction powers of JLo’s own bottom line. The fans noticed. But still, it was a great game to watch and it’s not like anyone deflated a football or anything. (Too soon?) “That was the best round of the game that I’ve ever played in my life,” Jimmy insisted, once the lightning-fast first round was over. This is a sharp-minded group, controversial non-calls or not.
Also, in her sit-down interview, JLo talked about her live show, and discussed that her mother won a $2.4 million jackpot in the slot machines in Atlantic City. Seriously. Slot machines! This was a while ago, but if anyone didn’t need to just win the lottery it’s the mother of Jennifer Lopez. Spread the wealth, casino gods! Rob Lowe was on “Conan” and he shared memories from shooting “The Lyon’s Den” next to a dildo factory. (True story, Andy Richter was there too.) Rob also shared tips on never aging (he’s 50!), and did a live reading of James Franco’s poetry, since James did live readings from Rob’s first book in front of monuments. Rob still doesn’t know why James did it. No one really gets Franco. Jay Baruchel was also on “Conan,” insisting he’s not always super-high, but he has always had confidence in his looks. His mom raised him to believe he’s a catch! Danny DeVito was on “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” and he talked about how he got his role in “Taxi” and what’s next for him on “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.” They’re in their 10th season of “Sunny” and Danny just loves it. He talks up a Wade Boggs storyline. On a different note, it turns out both Danny and Jimmy were altar boys and they shared stories. Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer of “Broad City” dressed up for “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” looking very “Dumb & Dumber” in their colorful tuxes. They discussed details from their Comedy Central show. Jimmy guest hosted “The Bachelor” this week, and he shared a “deleted scene” from when Chris Harrison trained him on how to announce the final rose.
Jimmy Kimmel thinks Benedict Cumberbatch has the best name in the world, but Jimmy was curious to see if he’d be as amazing with a different name. Cue this video with Benedict trying new names. “George Costanza” just doesn’t work for him, for some reason. But seriously, this is amazing.
Don Cheadle was on “Late Night with Seth Meyers” and he talked about hanging out with “The Avengers” cast. They also shared an early clip from his career. Ruth Wilson, who just won a Golden Globe for “The Affair,” was also on “Late Night,” discussing her theater school horror stories, including clown training.
