  • Catherine Zeta-Jones Joins ‘National Treasure’ TV Series

It feels like it’s been a long time since we last saw Catherine Zeta-Jones in movies, and indeed you have to go back to 2016’s adaptation of classic British sitcom ‘Dad’s Army’ to find a credit.

That streak doesn’t appear to be ending soon, but she has at least joined a new TV project that is connected to a movie series: Zeta-Jones will be one of the leads on the Disney+National Treasure’ spin-off series.

And talking of something we haven’t seen in theaters for a long time, the ‘National Treasure’ franchise hasn’t produced a movie since 2007 sequel ‘Book of Secrets’, which was the last time Nicolas Cage’s Benjamin Franklin Gates was running around trying to track down some historical artifact and crack a mystery.

The ‘National Treasure’ movies have always been oddities for Disney – they didn’t grab the best reviews, but the box office was solid enough, as audiences enjoyed the likes of Cage, Diane Kruger, Justin Bartha, Jon Voight, and Helen Mirren solving clues and finding themselves under threat from baddies who wanted what they were hunting.

Talk of a third film has lingered for years, but never made it past the script stage despite the efforts of producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Jon Turteltaub.

In the last couple of years, though, they turned their attention to the small screen, and Disney+’s ever-present hunger for new content, especially if it’s tied to recognizable stories and titles.

Bruckheimer and Turteltaub are executive producers here, working alongside writers Marianne and Cormac Wibberley, who worked on both movies and have crafted the pilot for the series.

Mira Nair will direct that first episode, which swaps the focus from Cage’s character to young heroine Jess Morales (Lisette Alexis) — a DREAMer in search of answers about her family — who embarks on the adventure of a lifetime to uncover the truth about the past and save a lost Pan-American treasure.

Zeta-Jones, who won an Oscar for her performance in ‘Chicago’, will play Billie, a billionaire, black-market antiquities expert, and treasure hunter who lives by her own code. She transformed herself from a penniless orphan to a shrewd, stylish businesswoman and adventurer. Billie’s used to getting what she wants; and she wants the Pan-American treasure. But not just for the money. This treasure has deeper stakes for her.

Alongside the lead pair, the cast also includes Lyndon Smith (as Agent Ross, an FBI agent who aids Jess), Zuri Reed (as Jess’ best friend Tasha), Jake Austin Walker (as a handsome struggling musician with a treasure hunting lineage), Antonio Cipriano (as a goofball conspiracy theorist) and Jordan Rodrigues (as another friend of Jess who also carries a torch for her).

Billie sounds like a good match for Zeta-Jones, especially since it gives us 1999 thriller ‘Entrapment’, though this show will probably feature fewer catsuits and awkward flirting with Sean Connery.

‘National Treasure’ the series has a 10-episode first season order already and will start filming episodes in Baton Rouge this month.

  • ‘Star Wars: Ahsoka’ Adds Mary Elizabeth Winstead

Though ‘The Book Of Boba Fett’ might be getting the attention of ‘Star Wars’ fans on TV screens via streaming service Disney+ now, plenty are also anticipating another spin-off from ‘The Mandalorian’, ‘Star Wars: Ahsoka’. The series, which will star Rosario Dawson as the skilled Jedi warrior Ahsoka Tano, is adding Mary Elizabeth Winstead to its cast.

Ahsoka Tano, for anyone unfamiliar with the character, made her debut in the animated series ‘Star Wars: The Clone Wars’, where she was voiced by Ashley Eckstein. She also appeared in ‘Stars Wars: Rebels’ and then was introduced in live-action form in ‘The Mandalorian’s second season episode ‘Chapter 13: The Jedi,’ played by Dawson. Ahsoka was able to communicate with The Child, long dubbed “Baby Yoda” by fans, before his real name was revealed to be Grogu.

The actress had lobbied to play the part and the fan reaction was warm, leading to this spin-off series. This being Lucasfilm and Disney, we have no official plot details for the show yet, but it’s rumored that she’ll be hunting down the Imperial character Grand Admiral Thrawn, who has appeared in novels and animated shows. The ‘Ahsoka’ series is set five years after the events of ‘Star Wars: Return of the Jedi’ (1983).

We do know that Hayden Christensen will be back as Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader, which makes sense as Anakin was one of Ahsoka’s Jedi tutors in ‘Clone Wars’. It seems likely that Christensen will be playing Skywalker in flashback, rather than Vader (as in the upcoming ‘Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi’, starring Ewan McGregor as the iconic Jedi Master).

Australian actress Natasha Liu Bordizzo is confirmed as playing Sabine Wren. She’s one of the main characters from ‘Rebels’, voiced by Tiya Sircar. The character is a young Mandalorian warrior and graffiti artist, Imperial Academy dropout and a former bounty hunter with expert knowledge of weapons and explosives. The casting increased speculation that we might see a live-action version of fellow ‘Rebels’ character Ezra Bridger.

Ivanna Sakhno, seen in ‘Pacific Rim: Uprising’ (2018) and ‘The Spy Who Dumped Me’ (2018), is aboard as a mysterious new character. We can expect more casting to follow as the series gets closer to shooting, but there is no confirmed date yet for it to hit Disney+.

In addition to ‘Birds Of Prey’, Winstead is known for films such as ‘Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World’ (2010), ‘Smashed’ (2012) and 2007’s ‘Live Free Or Die Hard’. Her role in Ahsoka is currently unknown.

Star Wars’ TV boss Dave Filoni is overseeing the series, writing this one and executive producing alongside Jon Favreau. Production is set for this spring in California. ‘The Mandalorian’ will launch its third season following the conclusion of ‘Boba Fett’, and other ‘Star Wars’ shows in the works include ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’, ‘Andor’ and ‘The Acolyte’. The Lucasfilm team also has a show based around Lando Calrissian in development.

  • ‘Moon Knight’ Trailer Premiere

'Moon Knight' premieres March 30th on Disney+
‘Moon Knight’ premieres March 30th on Disney+

Premiering Monday night during the NFL football game between the Arizona Cardinals and the Los Angeles Rams was the first full trailer for the upcoming Disney+ series ‘Moon Knight,’ which begins March 30th and stars Oscar Isaac (‘Dune’) as the classic Marvel comic book character.

Commonly referred to as the “Batman of the Marvel Universe,” in the comics Moon Knight is a former Marine and CIA operative named Marc Spector, who suffers from dissociative identity disorder, and powered by the Egyptian Moon God Khonshu, becomes the vigilante known as Moon Knight. The character was created by writer Doug Moench and artist Don Perlin, and first appeared in “Werewolf by Night” #32 in 1975.

Created by Jeremy Slater (‘The Umbrella Academy’), the six-episode series will be directed by Mohamed Diab (‘Cairo 678’), as well as Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead (‘Synchronic’), and it is set in the MCU.

Oscar Isaac plays Marc Spector and the series will explore his different personalities, including Steven Grant and Jake Lockley, while the character “is drawn into a deadly war of gods with his multiple identities.” Ethan Hawke (‘The Magnificent Seven’) has signed on to play the show’s villain.

The trailer beings with Oscar Isaac suddenly waking up and finding himself chained to a bed. We discover that this is his Steven Grant persona and that he is seeing visions of things that are not there. “I think I’m losing it,” says the character in a voice over. “I can’t tell the difference between life and dreams.”

We then see him walking through an Egyptian exhibit at a museum and finding a ringing cell phone. A female voice says, “Oh my God! You’re still alive? What’s wrong with you, Marc?” Isaac’s character then says, “Why did you call me Marc?”

We are then introduced to Ethan Hawke’s character, who seems to be a cult leader. He says to Spector, “It must be very difficult the voices in your head. There is chaos in you.” We then see a series of action sequences including Spector holding a gun, driving a truck, running, falling off a cliff, in an asylum, and in Egypt. Then an unidentified voice says, “Embrace the chaos.”

We then see Spector forming into Moon Knight with his full white, comic book accurate costume. He violently beats up a bad guy, before turning directly to the camera and walk out of view with glowing white eyes. After the title card, we get one last shot of Moon Knight, in costume, jumping from one rooftop to another with the crescent moon behind him.

Marvel Studios also released the official poster for the series, which you can see in full below. ‘Moon Knight’ premieres on Disney+ beginning March 30th.
