    • ‘Wicked’ has proved to be a record-breaking opening for a musical.
    • ‘Gladiator II’ was also successful.
    • The box office total was up compared to last year.

Studios and theater owners had something to be very thankful for this weekend, as both ‘Gladiator II’ and ‘Wicked’ stormed to big wins –– record-breaking success in the musical movie’s case –– at the box office ahead of the holiday.

Universal has, of course blanketed media with ‘Wicked’ promotions and there is enough merchandising out there to fill the courtyard of Shiz university.

‘Gladiator II,’ meanwhile, saw Paramount rolling out giant ads and, in a move that has clearly paid off, chose to open the historical epic sequel a week earlier in some international markets, getting a jump on the competition.

It might not quite be the same phenomenon as “Barbenheimer” from last year (when ‘Barbie’ and ‘Oppenheimer’ opened big together, but whatever portmanteau sticks –– “Glicked,” perhaps, or “Wickiator”? –– it’s still good news.

How did ‘Wicked’ perform at the box office?

Unlike the ‘Gladiator follow-up, ‘Wicked’ launched this week globally as well as domestically, and it has seen solid totals both here and elsewhere.

Directed by Jon M. Chu and starring Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, Jonathan Bailey and Jeff Goldblum, the movie charts the story of what happened before and after the events of ‘The Wizard of Oz.’

There were concerns that the fact it’s part one of two might hurt sales but confirming the split between films ahead of time seems to have reassured viewers. It doesn’t hurt that the movie enjoyed positive reviews and was embraced by a large slice of the moviegoing public.

How the story as a whole works remains to be seen –– ‘Part 2′ isn’t due until next November, but based on the reception for the first, the second looks set to be a success too.

The movie musical adapted from the hugely successful stage show earned $114 million in the US, which is the third-biggest movie debut in total this year (behind ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ and ‘Inside Out 2.’) It is also the biggest domestic opening ever for a movie based on a Broadway production, overtaking the likes of ‘The Color Purple.’

(Center) Danielle Brooks as Sophia in Warner Bros. Pictures’ bold new take on a classic,'The Color Purple,' a Warner Bros. Pictures release. Photo Credit: Eli Ade´. Copyright: © 2023 Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. All Rights Reserved.

Overseas, the response was a little more muted, with $50 million, but that $164.2 million global launch secured the largest opening for a Broadway-based movie, supplanting 2012’s ‘Les Misérables,’ which launched to $103 million.

Ticket sales for ‘Wicked’ rank as the fifth-biggest worldwide debut in history for a musical, ahead of Disney’s 2023 ‘The Little Mermaid’ reimagining ($163.6 million) and behind 2019’s ‘The Lion King’ ($446 million), 2017’s ‘Beauty and the Beast’ remake ($358 million), 2019’s ‘Frozen 2’ ($358 million ) and 2019’s ‘Aladdin’ ($213 million).

So while the witches of Oz can’t quite compare to the Mouse House, at least this result might make studios actually put the music of their, er, musicals in trailers going forward (no, we’re not holding our breath either.)

And the movie still has a few key markets left to open, including France, China and Japan.

Universal will need it to stay popular –– the combined two movies come with a $300 million price tag and the company spent untold millions on a worldwide promotional tour with the cast. Still, the blizzard of Oz-related partnership deals will help.

    How about ‘Gladiator II’?

As with ‘Wicked,’ the new ‘Gladiator’ outing had a solid base from which to build, but also some big sandals to fill.

Ridley Scott’s 2000 original was a big smash, earning nearly half a billion dollars globally (a big figure in 2000 terms) and winning five Oscars, including Best Picture.

A sequel has been in development almost as long as the original has been out, but it has taken years for Scott and a cadre of writers to crack the sequel story.

In the end, they chose to follow Lucius, the young man seen in the first film (played there by Spencer Treat Clark) who is the son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen, who returns for the sequel).

(L to R) Connie Nielsen plays Lucilla and Joseph Quinn plays Emperor Geta in 'Gladiator II' from Paramount Pictures.

The new movie follows a grown Lucius (with rising star Paul Mescal in the role) as he finds himself enslaved by the Roman empire and forced to fight as a gladiator. He’s also drawn into the turbulent politics of Rome via Macrinus, a slave-turned-slave-owning arms dealer, played to scene-stealing effect by Denzel Washington.

‘Gladiator II’ opened to $55.5 million domestically (slightly behind predictions) and added $50.5 million to its overseas total.

As mentioned, it had already launched overseas, and currently stands at $165.5 million from territories outside the US, and $221 million globally.

Which is a fine start for the movie, and Paramount will be hoping it stays strong at the box office. It skews more male and older than ‘Wicked’ or the family-friendlier titles on the way (see below for the heavy hitter headed to screens), but with a $250 million-plus budget (and around $100 million in promotional costs), it’ll be battling its way to profit.

What do exhibitors have to look forward to?

Disney is looking to enter the fray this Thanksgiving week with its latest sequel to a big movie –– ‘Moana 2,’ which the studio birthed from the planned animated series follow-up to the 2016 hit, will be on screens on November 27th, looking to attract the family crowds in search of something for the kids to watch during the hectic holidays.

With Dwayne Johnson and Auli’i Cravalho returning as Maui and Moana, the studio will be hoping for another successful launch, though we’d doubt that it’ll hit the heights of, say, ‘Inside Out 2’ from earlier this year.

    • Marvel has yet to officially confirm the movie.
    • Washington will next be seen in ‘Gladiator II.’

When Denzel Washington speaks, people listen. And we’re definitely ready to listen when the Oscar-winning actor, who is doing the press rounds for Ridley Scott’s ‘Gladiator II,’ says a role is being written for him in a hotly anticipated movie.

Speaking to the Today show on Australia’s Channel 9, Washington was asked about future plans, especially since just a couple of months about he was hinting about retiring from at least acting.

    Here’s what he said:

“At this point in my career, I’m only interested in working with the best, I don’t know how many more films I will make, probably not that many. I want to do things that I haven’t done. I played Othello at 22, I’m now going to play it at 70. After that, I’m playing Hannibal. After that, I’ve been talking with Steve McQueen about a film. After that, Ryan Coogler is writing a part for me in the next ‘Black Panther.’ ”

    Wait, what?!

What’s the status of Black Panther 3?

While we –– and indeed, the world at large –– would most definitely be happy to see Denzel Washington in the MCU, Marvel has of yet not confirmed that a third ‘Black Panther’ movie is even happening, and co-writer/director/franchise overseer Ryan Coogler hasn’t officially dropped word he’s making another movie.

It would hardly surprise us though –– the first ‘Black Panther’ was a zeitgeisty triumph, earning more than a billion at the box office. And while follow up ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ had to reckon with the tragic death of star Chadwick Boseman and the aftereffects of the pandemic on moviegoing, it also managed to take in more than $859 million at the box office.

So far, Coogler is pushing the story forward in other ways, including the ‘IronheartDisney+ series featuring the character of young inventor Riri Williams, as played by Dominique Thorne in ‘Wakanda Forever.’ That show launches in June next year.

And there is also animated offering ‘Eyes of Wakanda,’ which also debuts on Disney+ on August 6th.

Here’s the thing, though: if you can get Denzel Washington in your movie, you get Denzel Washington in your movie. And while we seriously doubt he would sign up for a recurring role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a one-shot as potentially a villain or some other character in a new ‘Black Panther’ is something to anticipate. Let’s see what happens…

Opening in theaters on November 22nd, ‘Gladiator II’ marks Ridley Scott’s long-awaited return to the political machinations and violence-filled arena of his 2000 hit, which helped make Russell Crowe a star.

The new movie naturally doesn’t feature Crowe’s Maximus, but his legacy and imprint is all over the sequel much in the way that ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ called back to its own original film.

(L to R) Pedro Pascal plays General Acacius and Paul Mescal plays Lucius in ‘Gladiator II’ from Paramount Pictures.

It was surprising that, given the cultural impact, box office success and Oscar success of the 2000 film, Paramount didn’t simply try to capitalize with a sequel. Part of that might be explained by Ridley Scott trying to find a good reason and the right story (after all, his main character, soldier-turned-gladiator Maximus, played by Russell Crowe –– spoiler alert –– dies at the end).

Scott has finally found something he’s happy with, setting the narrative 16 years after the events of the original, yet featuring plenty of links to that movie. In fact, there are some elements that are embedded as deeply as a trident in flesh.

It’s welcome that the director waited and made sure he was truly ready to return to this world and has rustled up an effective cast to carry on the legacy (a word that hangs heavy over this film) and can deploy even more spectacular moments in the arena.

    Script and Direction

Following a long process of development, with a lot of writers trying their hand at a new screenplay, the director has worked with David Scarpa, who scripted previous movies such as ‘Napoleon’ and ‘All the Money in the World’ for Scott. With a story credit for Peter Craig, the new screenplay is robust and meaty, full of political maneuvering and the sort of big speeches about honor and victory that you might expect from a ‘Gladiator’ movie.

Does it lean a little too heavily on the first film at times, whole sequences feeling like callbacks to it? Yes, but that doesn’t detract from the overall power of the new entry. There are the heroic central characters, sneery villains and one standout role that will have people talking.

Director Ridley Scott and Paul Mescal on the set of 'Gladiator II' from Paramount Pictures.
Director Ridley Scott and Paul Mescal on the set of ‘Gladiator II’ from Paramount Pictures.

As for Scott’s direction, the 86-year-old filmmaker shows no sign of slowing down and invests the new movie will plenty of panache. In fact, this is one of his best films in years, balancing tone and battles far more assuredly than ‘Napoleon’ ever managed.

He and his team have also managed to conjure up some fine fights, making this the rare sequel that can stand alongside the original, while not quite reaching the same quality threshold.

    ‘Gladiator II’: Performances

    Paul Mescal as Lucius

Paul Mescal plays Lucius in 'Gladiator II' from Paramount Pictures.
Paul Mescal plays Lucius in ‘Gladiator II’ from Paramount Pictures.

Paul Mescal, whose star has been rising fast on the back of performances in shows such as ‘Normal People’ and movies including ‘Aftersun’ and ‘All of Us Strangers’ is solid as Lucius –– the grown up version of the young character we met in the original.

He’s suitably fiery in the role, driven by rage and vengeance, but a measured leader of men much like Crowe, and indeed a very similar character. While Lucius is perhaps not as memorable as Maximus (partly because he’s a similar well-used heroic type), Mescal entirely convincing in the role and very able in the fight scenes.

    Denzel Washington as Macrinus

If there is a standout in this film, it’s Washington, who steals every scene he so much as wanders into and eats scenery like it’s a fine steak dinner. Macrinus is an excellent fit for the actor, and between his superb outfits and wily attitude, he seems certain to be in consideration for a supporting actor Oscar this year.

Joseph Quinn as Emperor Geta and Fred Hechinger as Emperor Caracalla

Joseph Quinn plays Emperor Geta in 'Gladiator II' from Paramount Pictures.

Taking on the sneery ruler role (the original film’s version was Commodus, played by Joaquin Phoenix), Quinn and Hechinger make a great double act. Pasty-faced and cruel, they bring different shades to the twin emperors.

Quinn is, initially at least, the more ambitious of the pair, with little regard for the people. But it’s Hechinger who ends up making the bigger impact with his combo of Salacious Crumb-style cackles while watching gladiators fight and his monkey sidekick (another scene-stealer).

    Connie Nielsen as Lucilla

Connie Nielsen plays Lucilla in 'Gladiator II' from Paramount Pictures.
Connie Nielsen plays Lucilla in ‘Gladiator II’ from Paramount Pictures.

Nielsen reprises her role as Lucius’ mother, here given more depth since the grown version of her son is bitter and resentful since she packed him off to Africa years ago to protect him. She’s just as powerful in the role in the past, even if she also has to be as passive given her position in society.

    Supporting cast

Pedro Pascal plays Marcus Acacius in 'Gladiator II' from Paramount Pictures.
Pedro Pascal plays Marcus Acacius in ‘Gladiator II’ from Paramount Pictures.

Pedro Pascal does good work as Marcus Acacius, the general dispatched to conquer the city where Lucius is living, which brings them into each other’s orbit. There is more to him than the trailers and other publicity might suggest, and Pascal gives it his all.

And shout out to the supporting likes of Derek Jacobi (also reprising his senatorial role from the original) and Peter Mensah as the leader of the city where Lucius has been living and a commander in its army.

    Final Thoughts

Scott has certainly put a lot of work into the new ‘Gladiator’ and though it occasionally falls short of his original film, with beats and the odd action scene that feel like “what if that bit from ‘Gladiator’ but with slightly different elements?” it’s still a great example of a legacy sequel.

Will you be entertained? Most certainly.

Even though ‘Gladiator II’, the much-buzzed about sequel to his 2000 epic ‘Gladiator’ is still two months away from release, director Ridley Scott is saying that he’s already throwing around ideas for a third movie, one he intends to wrap up the story as a trilogy.

And according to the filmmaker, he’s got some interesting inspiration…

What has happened with ‘Gladiator III’ so far?

Paul Mescal plays Lucius in 'Gladiator II' from Paramount Pictures.
Paul Mescal plays Lucius in ‘Gladiator II’ from Paramount Pictures.

While a third ‘Gladiator’ movie is strictly at the discussion stage right now, Scott told France’s Premiere magazine that he’s considering ideas for it.

Here’s what Scott had to say:

“I’m already playing with the idea of ‘Gladiator III’ “No, seriously! I lit the fuse… The ending of ‘Gladiator II’ evokes that of ‘The Godfather,’ with Michael Corleone finding himself with a job he didn’t want and wondering, ‘And now, Father, What am I doing?’ So, the next film will be about a man who doesn’t want to be where he is.”

That concept points to a return for Paul Mescal, who plays main character Lucius (more on that below).

In a follow-up interview with the magazine, the actor admitted that he’d spoken to Scott about a potential next outing.

This is what Mescal had to say:

“Yes, Ridley spoke to me about it, but only yesterday! So I’m waiting to see what will happen, but it interests me, of course. But we must not rush anything: the story must hold together.”

Whether it interests Mescal or not is only part of the issue here; ‘Gladiator II’ is a big, expensive bet by Paramount (to the tune of, according to different reports, of between $200 and $300 million), so it will need to make some serious profit to trigger spending on another sequel.

But let’s be honest here, if any director can wrangle studios to his will, it’s Scott.

What’s the story of ‘Gladiator II’?

Connie Nielsen plays Lucilla in 'Gladiator II' from Paramount Pictures.
Connie Nielsen plays Lucilla in ‘Gladiator II’ from Paramount Pictures.

Scott’s sequel is set decades after the original film. Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) dispatched Lucius (who in adult form is played by ‘Normal People’ and ‘Aftersun’s Mescal) to the African region of Numidia, where he has grown up feeling resentful of his mother for sending him away.

Her reasons were to secure his safety –– Numidia is beyond the grasp of Rome. But as Lucius has raised his own family, his relatively safety is put under threat when Rome decides to invade Numidia.

Returned to his birthplace as a slave and then a gladiator, Lucius must confront his past and secure his future.

Who else is in ‘Gladiator II’

Pedro Pascal plays Marcus Acacius in 'Gladiator II' from Paramount Pictures.

The movie also features Pedro Pascal as Acacius, the Roman General who leads the assault on Numidia, and who ends up clashing with Lucius back in Rome –– oh, and he’s also in love with Lucilla.

Denzel Washington, who worked with Scott on ‘American Gangster’, is Macrinus, an arms dealer who supplies food for the armies in Europe, including wine and oil and makes steel, spears, weapons, cannons, and catapults. He is a very wealthy man who rides a golden chariot.

Then we have Fred Hechinger as Emperor Caracalla and Joseph Quinn as Emperor Geta, two relatively young brothers who rule the crumbling Roman Empire and are described as damaged goods from birth, cruel and vain.

    • That said, he still has ‘Gladiator II’ and Spike Lee’s ‘High & Low’ headed our way.

Is Denzel Washington looking to close the curtain on the time in front of the camera? He’s certainly hinting at that.

In a new interview with Empire, Washington talked up the fact that, “There are very few films left for me to make that I’m interested in, and I have to be inspired by the filmmaker.”

Which all points to the fact that he’s starting to feel he’s said all he can in front of the camera and isn’t looking to keep that side of his career forever.

Of course, actors (and directors) talk about retirement, but frequently go back to work –– for every Gene Hackman (who hasn’t acted in years), there’s a Steven Soderbergh (who announced he was stepping back from directing movies but soon returned).

This was Washington’s statement at the time:

Washington plays Macrinus, a wealthy arms dealer who wants to be Emperor and he’s willing to do anything to get there.

He was clearly happy with his latest collaboration with Scott:

Though we’ve gotten used to legacy sequels landing years, sometimes decades after the original movie (Netflix’s ‘Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F’ is one recent example), it’s less common for the original director to return 24 years later. But few directors are as driven or influential as Ridley Scott, who at 86 is still making giant movies at an impressive rate.

And that brings us to ‘Gladiator II’, which follows up the swords and sandals epic of 2000. While the original starred Russell Crowe as Maximus, a general who is betrayed by a scheming emperor’s son (Joaquin Phoenix’s Commodus) when the ruler favors Maximus as his heir.

Maximus ends up a gladiator in the arena, fighting for his life. A fateful showdown with Commodus sees both men dead by the end of the movie.

Yet writer David Scarpa and Scott have found a way to continue the story through Commodus’ sister Lucilla (with Connie Nielsen reprising her role) and her son Lucius.

Scott’s sequel is set decades after the original film. Lucilla dispatched Lucius (who in adult form is played by ‘Normal People’ and ‘Aftersun’s Paul Mescal) to the African region of Numidia, where he has grown up feeling resentful of his mother for sending him away.

Her reasons were to secure his safety –– Numidia is beyond the grasp of Rome. But as Lucius has raised his own family, his safety is put under threat when Rome decides to invade Numidia.

Returned to his birthplace as a slave and then a gladiator, Lucius must confront his past and secure his future.

Here’s what Mescal told Vanity Fair about the themes of the movie:

“What human beings will do to survive, but also what human beings will do to win. We see that in the arena, but also in the political struggle that’s going on outside of my character’s storyline, where you see there’s other characters striving and pulling for power. Where’s the space for humanity? Where’s the space for love, familial connection? And ultimately, will those things overcome this kind of greed and power? Those things are oftentimes directly in conflict with each other.”

“Ridley’s process tends to be extremely collaborative. “He is extremely open to suggestions and ideas, which is what makes him a dream director in that way. He hears you, he sees you, and I, for one, come up every morning with my list of ideas that I run by him. He will go, ‘Yes, interesting…okay.…no, that’s way too much.…yep.’ I know that I’ll get some things through. And then there are things where he follows his instinct about the movie that he’s wanting to make.”

If you mention the title ‘Man on Fire’, chances are most people will think of the 2004 Tony Scott action thriller that represented one of his standout collaborations with Denzel Washington.

But did you know that A) the movie was based on a book and B) was previously adapted into a 1987 movie starring Scott Glenn?

And if Netflix has its way, we’ll also all be thinking of a new series adaptations of the novels, which has been in the works for a few months. Now ‘Aquaman’ and ‘Watchmen’ actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is aboard to star the series, via Deadline.

What’s the story of ‘Man on Fire’?

Denzel Washington and Dakota Fanning in 'Man on Fire'.

While the books have Creasy as an American former member of the French Foreign Legion, the Scott movie updated the basics to feature him as a hard-drinking, burnt-out ex-CIA operative who has given up on life until he’s hired as a bodyguard to protect 9-year-old Pita Ramos (Dakota Fanning). Bit by bit, Creasy (Washington) begins to reclaim some of his soul, but when Pita is kidnapped, Creasy’s fiery rage is finally released, and he will stop at nothing to save her as he sets out on a dangerous, revenge-fueled rescue mission.

There is plenty material to use for the series, since Quinnell (the pen name of author Philip Nicholson) wrote four more novels –– 1992’s ‘The Perfect Kill’, 1993’s ‘The Blue Ring’, 1994’s ‘Black Horn’ and 1996’s ‘Message from Hell’, which all feature Creasy.

The Netflix show, which has an eight-episode, straight-to-series order, will adapt ‘Man on Fire’ and ‘The Perfect Kill’.

And it won’t directly adapt the 2004 film’s plot regardless, given that –– spoiler alert! –– Creasy dies from his injuries at the end (in the book, he fakes his death). He should enjoy (though given his dour mood, “enjoy” might be a stretch) a longer life if things go his way on Netflix.

Who is making ‘Man on Fire’ as a series?

Also now working on the show? Steven Caple Jr., who directed ‘Creed II’ and most recently made ‘Transformers: Rise of the Beasts’.

When will ‘Man on Fire’ be on Netflix?

Since the eight-episode drama has yet to start filming, there are no details on when the show might hit Netflix. It’ll need to track down the rest of the cast first, so our guess would be a 2025 release at the earliest.

    • Denzel Washington will star in ‘High and low’.
    • Spike Lee is directing the new movie.
    • The film will remake a 1960s Akira Kurosawa crime thriller.

The idea of Denzel Washington and director Spike Lee teaming back up to work on a new movie together is certainly one to anticipate given their past collaborations.

Good news, then, for fans of the shared Spike/Denzel joints, as that’s exactly what is happening. Possibly more controversial (at least to those who worry about such things) is the fact that it’ll be a remake of no less a director’s work than Akira Kurosawa.

High and Low’ will be a new take on the 1963 crime thriller which starred Toshirô Mifune (another instance of a much-admired director/star combo).

It’s not the first time Washington has led a remake –– ‘The Taking of Pelham 123’ springs to mind –– but with Lee directing, we’re confident it’ll be something interesting and fresh.

Kurosawa’s film is loosely based on the 1959 novel ‘King’s Ransom’ by Ed McBain (a pseudonym for Evan Hunter).

It follows the story of a board member for a Japanese company who is forced to choose between using a vast amount of wealth to gain executive control and helping his chauffeur by lending him the money to free his child from kidnappers.

Lee is writing the script for the new movie with Alan Fox, but don’t yet know whether this will be a direct remake of the original or what will be changed. Given that it’s Lee, we can imagine he’ll be adding his own themes and ideas to the story.

‘High and Low’ will mark the fifth time the two Oscar winners have worked together, most recently on 2006’s ‘Inside Man’, along with ‘Malcolm X’ (for which Washington was nominated for an Oscar), ‘He Got Game’ and ‘Mo’ Better Blues’.

According to Deadline, this is a project they’ve wanted to work together on for a while now, but when the actors’ strike shifted schedules for various movies (including ‘Gladiator 2’, which Washington is starring in), that meant a delay from a planned 2023 shoot. With his duties on the ‘Gladiator’ sequel now complete, the actor is available, and Lee is planning to start shooting ‘High and Low’ in March.

When will ‘High and Low’ be in theaters?

While Apple and A24 are backing the new movie, it doesn’t yet have a set release date. There’s a chance Lee could have it ready for awards season, but we’d guess it’s more likely to be a 2025 entry. And the plan is for A24 to have it in theaters before it lands on Apple’s servers.

    • ‘Star Wars’ actor John Boyega is starring in a ‘Book of Eli’ prequel series.
    • It’ll be set 30 years before the Denzel Washington movie.
    • The film’s creative team is involved.

It would seem that there are few movies left that haven’t been explored in some prequel fashion, often in another medium. Just this week, for example, we’ll see the ‘Sexy Beast’ TV series that chronicles the earlier days of the characters in Jonathan Glazer’s 2000 crime thriller.

So it’s not surprising that memorable Denzel Washington post apocalyptic dramatic thriller ‘The Book of Eli’ would get the same treatment. And now we know that John Boyega, no stranger to genre after ‘Attack the Block’ and the ‘Star Wars’ sequel trilogy, will star as a younger version of the title character played by Washington.

What was the story of ‘The Book of Eli’?

Denzel Washington in 'The Book of Eli.'

The neo-Western movie takes place thirty years after a nuclear catastrophe caused an ecocide. It revolves around Eli (Washington), a nomad who fights his way across a ravaged, post-apocalyptic America while protecting a sacred book that holds the secrets to humanity’s salvation.

Alongside Washington, the cast also included Gary Oldman, Mila Kunis, Ray Stevenson, Jennifer Beals and Tom Waits.

What’s the angle of ‘The Book of Eli’s TV prequel?

Plot details are scarce at this early stage, but Deadline has heard it’ll be set 30 years before the movie’s storyline, so roughly around the time of the atomic attack that leads to its wasteland locales.

Who is making the new show?

    John Boyega in 'Breaking.'
John Boyega in ‘Breaking.’ Courtesy of Bleecker Street.

In addition to Boyega, who will produce as well as star, the series has the movie’s writer, Gary Whitta, aboard as creator, writer and executive producer, and would effectively be one of the people running the show.

Albert and Allen Hughes, who directed the movie, are aboard as executive producers.

Alcon Entertainment, the company which produced the movie, is backing the new show. But while Warner Bros. was the distributor, and you might think Warner Bros. Discovery might snap this up for HBO or its allied Max streaming service, it’s actually being shopped around to different buyers.

So while Max could still nab it, it may end up at Apple, Netflix or somewhere else entirely. Alcon, for example, has another TV project based on one of its movies, with a ‘Blade Runner’ series on the way from Prime Video, so that could be a destination (though the company may not want another apocalyptic series on its books with ‘Fallout’ already set for this year).
