    • Warner Bros. has made its big presentation to the 2026 CinemaCon crowd.
    • Among the movies touted were ‘Supergirl’ and ‘Dune: Part III’
    • The likes of Tom Cruise and James Gunn showed up to lobby exhibitors.

After a hugely successful 2026 in terms of both box office and awards, Warner Bros. arrives at CinemaCon with a bigger story looming over its head –– the future. With the Paramount merger inching closer, there will of course be questions about the new regime’s plans, even as the likes of David Ellison maintain that the studio’s output will be boosted.

But the focus, of course, will be on the movies headed our way from the studio, including a couple of DC Studios offerings (‘Supergirl’ and ‘Clayface’), Denis Villeneuve’s new ‘Dune’ entry and that rare beast, a non-‘Mission: Impossible’ job for Tom Cruise in Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s ‘Digger’.

With Patton Oswalt as the host (who joked that he wanted to join the DC Universe), this is what was presented…

Before any of the big announcements, we got word from Warner Bros. film bosses Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy that the studio is launching a new label called Warner Clockwork, whose first production is ‘Anora’ director Sean Baker‘s next project, ‘Te Amo!’.

A sizzle reel celebrating last year’s accomplishments was followed by an even more exciting one for 2027, including some big casting news dropped for ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’

Tom Cruise and Alejandro G. Iñárritu kick off the 2026 portion of the show with their collaboration, ‘Digger’. Cruise heaped praise on his director, with the filmmaker explaining that he got the idea for the new movie nine years ago and started discussing it with the actor seven years ago. Cruise, according to him was the only choice.

The movie tells of most powerful man in the world as he embarks on a frantic mission to prove he is humanity’s savior before the disaster he’s unleashed destroys everything.

The first project to cover was ‘Clayface’, about the Batman antagonist, which Safran described as more focused on character than genre. He showed off the first footage from the movie.

What can we expect? “Midnight margaritas, jumping off the roof, and also have our past catching up with us,” according to Kidman. “We have our destinies, and the family. I think it’s going to be really, really fun.”

The big finish was, somewhat naturally, the new ‘Dune’, with director Denis Villeneuve taking the stage accompanied by Fremen warriors.  Villeneuve said he made the movie “1,000%” for the fans, and the audience was treated to the first seven minutes of the movie.

Accompanied by the likes of Zendaya, Momoa and notorious opera-disliker Timothée Chalamet, Villeneuve showed off a battle scene that promises some suitably epic action.

  • ‘Dune: Part Three’ Trailer Debut and Press Conference

    ZxF4bFsa

It’s time to return to Arrakis: Warner Bros. Pictures has unveiled the first teaser trailer for ‘Dune: Part Three,’ director Denis Villeneuve’s concluding chapter in the epic cinematic trilogy adapted from the landmark sci-fi novels by Frank Herbert.

    Pxt18Jw7zmtazBCTzSPmI5

As you can see from viewing the trailer, ‘Dune: Part Three’ – which is due out on Dec. 18, 2026 and is based on Herbert’s second novel, ‘Dune Messiah’ – is just as immense and immersive a film experience as 2021’s ‘Dune‘ and 2024’s ‘Dune: Part Two,‘ both of which were nominated for best picture at the Academy Awards.

Just in these two minutes, the screen practically explodes with vast vistas of armies battling in the desert, spaceships rocketing through the void, and Paul ‘Muad’Dib’ Atreides (Timothée Chalamet), the leader of the Arrakis native people known as the Fremen and now emperor of the universe, facing not just the galactic war he has unleashed but the prospect of parenthood with the Fremen warrior Chani (Zendaya).

In addition to Chalamet and Zendaya, cast members returning from the first two films include Josh Brolin (Gurney Halleck), Javier Bardem (Stilgar), Rebecca Ferguson (Lady Jessica), Florence Pugh (Princess Irulan), and Jason Momoa, who plays a somewhat different version of his deceased character, Duncan Idaho.

New cast members include Anya Taylor-Joy as Paul’s mysterious and powerful sister Alia, Isaach de Bankolè as Paul’s former personal fedaykin (commando) Farok, and Robert Pattinson as Scytale, a member of a secretive society known as the Tlielaxu who can mimic any other human’s identity and leads a conspiracy to assassinate Paul.

Moviefone was present as Denis Villeneuve, Zendaya, Pattinson, Bardem, and Taylor-Joy premiered the trailer for press at an event in Los Angeles, and here’s what we discovered from them about ‘Dune: Part Three.’

    1) Director Denis Villeneuve Says ‘Dune: Part Three’ Is A Different Movie From The First Two.

Director Denis Villeneuve at the Warner Bros. Pictures, trailer launch event of 'Dune: Part Three' at the AMC Century City 15, in Los Angeles, California, March 16, 2026.
Director Denis Villeneuve at the Warner Bros. Pictures, trailer launch event of ‘Dune: Part Three’ at the AMC Century City 15, in Los Angeles, California, March 16, 2026.

Just as the book ‘Dune Messiah’ is not in the same vein as the first novel, ‘Dune,’ Denis Villeneuve hints that ‘Dune: Part Three’ charts its own path.

Denis Villeneuve: It happens many years later. It’s a very different movie from the first ones. I said to myself, it’s a good idea to come back to this world not by nostalgia, but by urgency, and to go there with a critical eye and not to be self-indulgent. I said to my team that it will be a very different film – a ‘Dune’ movie, but with a different tone, with a different rhythm, with a different base. If the first movie was more a contemplation of a boy exploring a new world, and the second one was a war movie, this one is a thriller. It’s more action-packed and more dense, more muscular than the others, I would say. It takes place many years after the first films — a bit like the book, ‘Dune Messiah’ – and gives us a new view of what has happened to Paul Atreides. It’s 17 years, and we see Paul dealing with the consequences of having too much power, and him trying to figure out how to get out of this cycle of violence. Of course, he’s an emperor who can see the future, so he’s kind of invincible, and we also follow people trying to overthrow him. It’s a quite intense story.

    2) Zendaya got a pre-recorded question from Florence Pugh played for her at the trailer debut event.

Zendaya at the Warner Bros. Pictures, trailer launch event of 'Dune: Part Three' at the AMC Century City 15, in Los Angeles, California, March 16, 2026.
Zendaya at the Warner Bros. Pictures, trailer launch event of ‘Dune: Part Three’ at the AMC Century City 15, in Los Angeles, California, March 16, 2026.

Zendaya and Florence Pugh didn’t share the screen much in ‘Dune: Part Two,’ where Pugh’s Princess Irulan was introduced, but the ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ star hints that they have more interaction in ‘Part Three.’

Zendaya: I love Florence Pugh. She’s so talented and so wonderful in this role. On the press tour the last time we were saying that we only got one scene together, and we were far away. So I was like, I hope we get more. I don’t want to tease anything, but she’s absolutely phenomenal and you guys will just have to see for yourself what happens, because it’s quite the journey. I’m so excited. I mean, these movies have meant so much to me over the years. I’ve literally been able to grow up in my entire 20s doing them, so they have such a special place in my heart, and all these people do as well. So I’m very excited and very grateful to be a part of it.

    3) Javier Bardem Says His Character Stilgar Must Face Reality In ‘Dune: Part Three.’

Javier Bardem at the Warner Bros. Pictures, trailer launch event of 'Dune: Part Three' at the AMC Century City 15, in Los Angeles, California, March 16, 2026.
Javier Bardem at the Warner Bros. Pictures, trailer launch event of ‘Dune: Part Three’ at the AMC Century City 15, in Los Angeles, California, March 16, 2026.

Javier Bardem’s Fremen fighter Stilgar becomes one of Paul’s most loyal soldiers and believers in the first two ‘Dune’ movies, championing him as the prophesized messiah of his people. But in ‘Dune: Part Three,’ the actor says, Stilgar finds himself in a ‘be careful what you wish for’ situation.

Javier Bardem: Well, I think it takes him to a place where he sees different realities of what being empowered means after so long. He’s in this contradiction between his loyalty to the idea that he strongly believed and fought for back in the day, and also the result of the idea becoming something that he feels may not be the thing that he dreamed about. It sounds complicated, but it’s also a complicated book, and it’s a great analogy about the idea of power and the reality of having that power, and Stilgar is there in that contradiction.

    4) Anya Taylor-Joy’s Alia Is A Major Character In The Movie.

Anya Taylor-Joy at the Warner Bros. Pictures, trailer launch event of 'Dune: Part Three' at the AMC Century City 15, in Los Angeles, California, March 16, 2026.
Anya Taylor-Joy at the Warner Bros. Pictures, trailer launch event of ‘Dune: Part Three’ at the AMC Century City 15, in Los Angeles, California, March 16, 2026.

Glimpsed briefly in ‘Dune: Part Two’ as both a yet-to-be-born baby and a young woman in a vision from the future, Alia Atreides – who has powerful psychic gifts of her own — becomes one of her older brother Paul’s most important allies in ‘Part Three.’

Anya Taylor-Joy: Alia has a very intense blessing/curse situation. She carries the weight and the wisdom of generations and generations in her head. She’s never in a singular conversation. It’s kind of everything everywhere, all at once. And the one thing that she really feels most strongly about is her love and devotion to her brother, because that is the only person who’s ever made her feel like she makes sense. He’s understood her from before she was even born, and she will do anything for him — to various degrees of insanity.

    5) Robert Pattinson Thinks He Got The Job in ‘Dune’ Thanks To Zendaya.

‘The Batman’ star Robert Pattinson is such a fan of the ‘Dune’ films that he asked Zendaya for advice on how to get involved. He ended up playing a shapeshifting, biologically mutated human called Scytale who is a central figure in a plot to overthrow Paul.

Robert Pattinson: It’s incredible. I absolutely adored these movies. I saw them multiple times in the theaters, and I think I was talking to [Zendaya] on the set of ‘The Drama’ and I was like, ‘How do I get in one of those “Dune” movies?’ And then I got a very unexpected call a few months later, and I kind of think [Zendaya] had something to do with it. But I just think they’re such a towering achievement and the cast is so incredible. I just think everybody wants to work with Denis. He’s a master. When do you see the scope and scale and ambition of these movies on set, you get why they feel like this on the screen. It’s an amazing experience.

Pattinson adds that his character, Scytale, was fascinating to play because his motivations and goals are ambiguous:

Robert Pattinson: He’s an unusual character in the book. I mean, you can’t really tell whose side he’s on, which is kind of what makes him quite interesting. I want to say he’s not a conventional bad guy as such. He might even be a good guy. Who knows? I will find out when I see the movie (laughs). It’s an extremely fun character to play, and the look for it is extraordinary.

(L to R) Robert Pattinson, Anya Taylor-Joy, Javier Bardem, Zendaya, and director Denis Villeneuve at the Warner Bros. Pictures, trailer launch event of 'Dune: Part Three' at the AMC Century City 15, in Los Angeles, California, March 16, 2026.

What is the plot of ‘Dune: Part Three’?

Defeating his enemies on Arrakis and becoming emperor of all known space, superhuman Fremen messiah Paul Atreides grapples with the consequences of unleashing a bloody galactic jihad, even as mysterious and powerful forces conspire to destroy him.

Who is in the cast of ‘Dune: Part Three’?

    • Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides

    • Pierce Brosnan has joked that he’d love to return to the Bond franchise.
    • The actor says he’d return if asked.
    • And his ‘The Thursday Murder Club’ co-star Helen Mirren has commented on the idea of a female Bond.

Since the news broke that A) Amazon MGM Studios took over creative control of the Bond franchise and B) ‘Dune’ director Denis Villeneuve was brought in to oversee development of the next big screen iteration of 007’s adventures, there has been speculation about who might play the lead.

Now, out doing press for new Netflix murder mystery movie ‘The Thursday Murder Club’, Pierce Brosnan –– who famously played Bond between 1995 and 2002 –– has weighed in on whether he’d come back. And it appears he would!

Brosnan, of course, wasn’t being entirely serious with his comments, but you can read more about what he said below…

What did Pierce Brosnan say about a Bond movie return?

Pierce Brosnan as James Bond in 'Die Another Day.' Photo: MGM.
Pierce Brosnan as James Bond in ‘Die Another Day.’ Photo: MGM.

Talking with the Radio Times, Brosnan addressed if he thought there was still a place for him in the James Bond world:

“My wife Keely [Shaye Smith] and I have been listening to the drumbeat of expectation of who’s going to be the next James Bond. There are many great candidates out there, and I’m sure they’re going to make it a spectacle of delight. I don’t think anyone wants to see a craggy, 72-year-old Bond, but if Villeneuve had something up his sleeve I would look at it in a heartbeat. Why not? It’s great entertainment. It could be lots of laughs. Bald caps, prosthetics… who knows?”

And you know what? We’d be happy to see Brosnan taking on the role of M, the head of MI6 who is usually the one to send Bond out on his missions (and complain about his wayward tactics).

In the more recent Bond movies, the character has been played by Judi Dench and Ralph Fiennes.

Yet Brosnan wasn’t the only person weighing in on the future of Bond. His ’Thursday Murder Club’ co-star Helen Mirren also broached the issue.

What did Helen Mirren say about Bond?

According to Mirren –– who plays a former intelligence operative in ‘Thursday Murder Club’ –– and was talking to Saga magazine, she thinks that despite calls for a woman to finally play Bond, the character should stay as he is:

“I’m such a feminist, but James Bond has to be a guy. You can’t have a woman. It just doesn’t work. James Bond has to be James Bond, otherwise it becomes something else.”

When will the next Bond movie be on screens?

While it has Villeneuve in the director’s chair and Steven Knight writing the script, we’re a ways away from an announcement on the date. We don’t even yet know who will actually be playing Bond.

‘The Thursday Murder Club’, meanwhile, lands on Netflix on August 28th.

    • With Daniel Craig stepping away and Amazon MGM Studios taking over the franchise, finding a new James Bond is crucial to the series’ success.
    • Amazon supposedly has a wish list of actors, while other names have also been cropping up – sometimes for years.
    • Only six actors have officially played Bond in more than 60 years.

Who should be the next actor to don the mantle of James Bond, agent 007 of the British Secret Service? That question has vexed filmmakers since the franchise first launched in 1962, when then-superstars like Cary Grant and Richard Burton were bypassed in favor of a little-known Scottish actor named Sean Connery. In the 60-plus years since ‘Dr. No’ introduced Bond to audiences, six actors (seven, if you include David Niven in the non-canonical 1967 Bond spoof, ‘Casino Royale’) have worn the tuxedo, with a mix of established stars and relative unknowns taking on the role for stints varying from one film (George Lazenby) to seven (Roger Moore).

    2142

Some Bonds, of course, have been more successful than others, but the venerable franchise faces a challenge on two fronts now: first, the property has changed hands for the first time in decades, with the Broccoli family’s Eon Productions – which has been behind every Bond film to date – ceding control to Amazon MGM Studios. Second, the next Bond actor will follow the five-film run of Daniel Craig, which yielded one of the franchise’s all-time best films (2006’s ‘Casino Royale’) as well as its highest-grossing (2012’s billion-earning ‘Skyfall’).

But there’s more to it than that. The next Bond, whoever he is – and all kinds of potential names have been circulating for years – has to find just the right balance of qualities. He should be young enough (early 30s) to have cross-generational appeal, but not too young that he seems to lack experience; he should be as quick with his gun as he is with a quip or double-entendre; he needs to portray both the ruthless brutality of a top-notch assassin and the vulnerability of a lonely, haunted man; and he must be both physically imposing and sexually alluring.

Not such a tall order, right? There’s no question that director Denis Villeneuve and producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman have their work cut out for them. So let’s take a quick scan of the names that are out there now – and analyze whether any of them are destined to become the next James Bond.

    The Grizzled Veterans

Let’s start with the actors who won’t be Bond. The irony is that all of them were mooted for the role at one point or another, but time has frankly passed them by. That short list includes Henry Cavill, a fan favorite who auditioned for the role at age 22 but lost to Daniel Craig. At 42, he’s the same age as Pierce Brosnan when the latter got the part, and three years younger than Roger Moore. But Cavill is also far too recognizable from playing Superman in the DC Extended Universe and the title role in ‘The Witcher’ TV series.

Also, outside of his stints as Kal-El, Cavill is not a box office draw. That in itself means nothing, especially if the producers go with a smaller name – but Cavill has been on screens long enough to prove that he lacks a certain quality that audiences flock to see.

Tom Hardy, likewise, has been in hits such as ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ and the ‘Venom’ trilogy, but has had an erratic box office run outside of those. At age 47, he’s also pretty much aged out of the role already. The same goes for 52-year-old Idris Elba, a popular choice for a long time who was reportedly reluctant to consider the role because he worried whether audiences would accept a Bond of color. Of the three, he probably would have been the most formidable choice.

    The Amazon MGM List

Variety reported in June 2025 than Amazon MGM was interested in casting an actor under 30 as Bond. The studio’s wish list featured three actors: Tom Holland, Harris Dickinson, and Jacob Elordi — all decent-to-good actors still exploring their potential, but not necessarily able to nail the role of Bond.

Let’s dismiss Holland right off the bat. Fair or not, he’s a relatively small fellow with a baby face that will simply not suit Bond. Not only that, his global fame all stems from his portrayal of Peter Parker/Spider-Man in six Marvel films, with at least two more to go. Holland is simply too youthful and too associated with the web-slinger to step into 007’s shoes.

At 28, the Australian Elordi (the person playing Bond, by the way, can be British, Irish, Scottish, Welsh, or Australian – but not American) is probably the best all-around actor and may have just enough gravitas (and height) to evolve with the role. Dickinson, meanwhile, showed psychological and sexual intensity in ‘Babygirl’ and a rough physicality in ‘The Iron Claw,’ but like most of the actors attached to the role, would still have to bulk his slender frame up a bit.

The Rest of the U.K. Contingent

When you get past names like Holland, Cavill, and Elordi, there is a whole crop of relatively young U.K. actors who, for the most part, are relatively obscure outside their home turf even if they’ve done some movie and TV work in Hollywood. Leading that pack is Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who’s been bandied about as a frontrunner for 007 for the past couple of years but remains fairly low-key with the public despite roles in high-profile films like ‘Nosferatu’ and ‘28 Years Later.’ Taylor-Johnson is a good actor, but he’s missing something – a certain magnetism – that makes us reluctant to consider him for Bond.

Theo James is another British actor who has scored some impressive credentials – most recently, he starred in the TV version of ‘The Gentlemen,’ Season 2 of ‘The White Lotus’ and the Stephen King film ‘The Monkey’ – but at 40 may be at the tipping point to play 007. Will Poulter, meanwhile, has shown physical prowess in the recent ‘Warfare’ and as Adam Warlock in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,’ and can be quite menacing (he’s frightening as a sadistic cop in ‘Detroit’), but may lack the sexual spark necessary to attract female audiences.

Jack Lowden in 'Slow Horses' season 3 premiering November 29, 2023 on Apple TV+.
Jack Lowden in ‘Slow Horses’ season 3 premiering November 29, 2023 on Apple TV+.

One interesting candidate whose name has surfaced again and again is Scottish thespian Jack Lowden – at 35, he’s the right age, he has rugged good looks along with experience in physical action roles, and his resume (which also includes extensive stage work) ranges from high-level productions like the BBC’s 2016 version of ‘War and Peace’ to the acclaimed Apple TV+ series ‘Slow Horses,’ in which he plays – in an eerie coincidence – an MI5 agent.

Other U.K. actors whose names have been linked to the role at one point or another include Paul Mescal (‘Gladiator II’), Josh O’Connor (‘Challengers’), James Norton (‘The Nevers’), Callum Turner (‘Masters of the Air’), Regé-Jean Page (‘Bridgerton’), Damson Idris (‘F1’), Richard Madden (‘Eternals’), Sam Heughan (‘Outlander’), and Dev Patel (‘Monkey Man’).

Do any of these – or even the other candidates above – scream ‘James Bond’ at us? Not necessarily. But actors are capable of transforming themselves in ways that we ordinary folks can’t often imagine, and one of the above – if not someone yet unrevealed to us – will certainly emerge from that process as the next Bond…James Bond.

    • ‘Peaky Blinders’ creator Steven Knight is the write the next Bond movie.
    • Denis Villeneuve is in the director’s chair.
    • There’s still no word on a new Bond.

The pieces appear to be quickly falling into place for the new James Bond outing, the first since stewards Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson formally handed creative control to Amazon MGM Studios.

We already know that ‘Dune’ director Denis Villeneuve will be the filmmaker charged with bringing 007 back to screens following the effective slate wipe that was Daniel Craig’s final outing, ‘No Time to Die’.

Now, Deadline reports that Steven Knight, creator of TV drama ‘Peaky Blinders’ and writer of movies including ‘Locke’, ‘Eastern Promises’ and ‘Maria’, has taken the scripting job.

Knight is a fascinating choice –– while he has produced some truly great (and occasionally Oscar-nominated) work, he’s also had a few whiffs, such as ‘Serenity’ and ‘Locked Down’. But he is certainly an interesting person to work alongside Villeneuve on Bond.

Interviewed on BBC Radio 5 about the new job, Knight had this to say:

“It has always been on my bucket list, and it’s fantastic to be invited to do it — I can’t wait to get started. I’m hoping that, being a Bond fan for so many years, it will be imbued into me and I will be able to produce something that’s the same but different, and better, stronger and bolder.”

He also admitted that he had no idea why producer Amy Pascal wanted to meet him until the big announcement that she and ‘Harry Potter’ veteran David Heyman would be shepherding Amazon MGM’s Bond efforts:

“I very quickly discovered what it was about and became very excited and hopeful. And then the process is…you do some meetings, you discuss some ideas, and then you find out you’ve got it. I found out a while ago, but it was announced last night, which is great. It’s a high pressure job, but you’ve just got to do what you do, do it as well as you can.”

That’s the next big question that fans are looking to answer.

We’ve had a wealth of names speculated about since Craig hung up his holster and downed his last martini (and, er –– spoiler alert for ‘No Time to Die’ –– let’s not forget was blown up by a missile).

In that time the likes of Idris Elba, Theo James, Richard Madden, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Henry Cavill have all been mooted, with Tom Holland, Harris Dickinson and Jacob Elordi among the current crop of candidates.

Yet the main name in the mix seems to be Aaron Pierre, who has impressed in ‘The Underground Railroad’, ‘Foe’ and particularly ‘Rebel Ridge’ where he proved his action/drama chops.

Pierre will next be seen in DC/HBO series ‘Lanterns’.

When will the new Bond movie be on screens?

With Villeneuve currently busy preparing to make the third ‘Dune’ outing (that one is scheduled for December 16th, 2026), we wouldn’t expect to see a new Bond much before 2027 at the earliest.

    • As a lifelong Bond fan, choosing Denis Villeneuve puts the future of the franchise in good hands.
    • If nothing else, Denis Villeneuve will make the most visually stunning James Bond movie.

It was recently announced that Denis Villeneuve is going to be directing the new James Bond film, after control was handed over to Amazon MGM. While the internet is debating on if he is right for the job or not, there are a lot of things that make him the perfect choice, but a couple concerns as well.

    t2LDmhxeMukS9jf1dBOkc3

Not a lot is known about the next film, including which actor will be portraying the title character. Denis Villeneuve is busy with the upcoming ‘Dune: Messiah‘ which releases in December 2026 meaning it might be a while until we hear more details about this movie. Chances are the new 007 movie will not start filming until ‘Dune: Messiah’ is in post-production, although the script and casting should be completed before then.

Fans are looking at a late 2026 or early 2027 release at the earliest. That definately feels like a long time after 2021’s ‘No Time To Die‘.

Denis Villeneuve Has A Love For The Franchise

James Bond (Daniel Craig) prepares to shoot in ‘No Time To Die,’ a Metro Goldwyn Mayer Pictures film.

Probably the most exciting aspect of this decision is that Denis Villeneuve has admitted that he grew up watching the James Bond films. They hold a special place in his heart and he went so far as to call them sacred territory so he knows what he needs to accomplish. And if anyone can do it, it is him.

Often when a director is passionate about a franchise before they are welcomed into it, they want nothing more than to create a perfect addition to it. This is something that Denis Villeneuve has dreamed of, making it unlikely he would do anything that would anger the fans.

He knows what works and what doesn’t in a James Bond movie, and he is certainly willing to put in the work. No one has ever claimed that Denis Villeneuve doesn’t know what he is doing, so odds are he will put everything he has into making the next James Bond movie something special. Why take on the responsibility of something like this, especially a franchise you love, and phone it in?

With Denis Villeneuve in the director’s chair for the new James Bond movie, there is a good chance this is going to be the most beautiful of the franchise. As exciting as this is, here is where one of the concerns comes in. No one is doubting that with Denis Villeneuve involved this movie is going to look beautiful, as we have seen him win multiple awards for visual effects and cinematography, but you need more than that for a successful film.

His visual style doesn’t exactly scream James Bond. At least not at first thought. Denis Villeneuve is known for sweeping landscapes, desaturated tones, and extremely well done special effects. These are all things that the new James Bond movie could thrive off of, but it might take long time fans a bit longer to get used to it.

Blade Runner 2049‘ is a great example. The film might have been a box office disappointment, but it is also applauded for its incredible visuals and world building. It found its audience at home after some were skeptical about Denis Villeneuve being at the helm and a need for another movie.

The new James Bond movie will not have this problem, however, as it is already a well established franchise. Odds are fans will be showing up in theaters no matter what, although that also depends slightly on who the next James Bond actor is.

Denis Villeneuve Is Widely Considered One Of Today’s Best Working Directors

Of course there were fans of ‘Dune‘ before Denis Villeneuve’s films, but he introduced it to so many people all around the world in a way that caused them to explore the world further: reading the books, seeing the previous film, and so on. His work drew people in and created new fans, which is something that he could do for the James Bond franchise as well, something Amazon MGM surely thought about.

Denis Villeneuve has a way of adapting and growing already established projects, like ‘Dune’ and ‘Blade Runner‘. He often remains faithful enough to the original, but still adds something new and exciting. He knows how to build tension and create worlds and characters that will leave viewers mesmerized.

James Bond already has a well established fan base, but it still needs the next movie to be good, well-respected, and an entertaining watch. Denis Villeneuve is going to bring his A-game because of his love for the character. He is well versed in the films so there is no need to think he will change what makes James Bond so beloved. Surely we are all in good hands.

At least one mystery surrounding the future of the Bond franchise can be laid to rest alongside the villains that our hero has killed in his years of service: we know who will direct the next 007 movie after the long hiatus following ‘No Time to Die.’

That filmmaker? None other than ‘Dune’ overseer Denis Villeneuve, according to Amazon MGM Studios.

    t2LDmhxeMukS9jf1dBOkc3

It might sound like a surprise –– and not least because of the filmmaker’s current busy schedule –– but despite his love of putting his stamp on projects, he’s worked comfortably in the blockbuster/franchise space before –– besides the ‘Dune’ movies, there was ‘Blade Runner 2049’.

Villeneuve is now part of a team that already includes producers David Heyman and Amy Pascal, and executive producer Tanya Lapointe (who has worked with Villeneuve for years).

Here’s what Villeneuve had to say on the news:

“Some of my earliest movie-going memories are connected to 007. I grew up watching James Bond films with my father, ever since ‘Dr. No’ with Sean Connery. I’m a die-hard Bond fan. To me, he’s sacred territory. I intend to honor the tradition and open the path for many new missions to come. This is a massive responsibility, but also, incredibly exciting for me and a huge honor. Amy, David, and I are absolutely thrilled to bring him back to the screen. Thank you to Amazon MGM Studios for their trust.”

And here’s Mike Hopkins, head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios:

“We are honored that Denis has agreed to direct James Bond’s next chapter. He is a cinematic master, whose filmography speaks for itself. From ‘Blade Runner 2049’ to ‘Arrival’ to the ‘Dune’ films, he has delivered compelling worlds, dynamic visuals, complex characters, and — most importantly — the immersive storytelling that global audiences yearn to experience in theaters. James Bond is in the hands of one of today’s greatest filmmakers and we cannot wait to get started on 007’s next adventure.”

Finally, Heyman and Pascal weighed in on the decision:

“Denis Villeneuve has been in love with James Bond movies since he was a little boy. It was always his dream to make this movie, and now it’s ours, too. We are lucky to be in the hands of this extraordinary filmmaker.”

Previously, such other well-known directors including Edward Berger, Edgar Wright, Chris Nolan, Paul King and Alfonso Cuarón have been rumored for the job, but now Villeneuve will segue from spice to spycraft.

The Amazon MGM movement comes, of course, after the surprise decision by 007 stewards Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson to hand the reins of the franchise over to the company for a hefty pay day.

    Talking of…

Bond handover: the studio and producers’ comments

This was Wilson’s comment at the time:

“With my 007 career spanning nearly 60 incredible years, I am stepping back from producing the James Bond films to focus on art and charitable projects. Therefore, Barbara and I agree, it is time for our trusted partner, Amazon MGM Studios, to lead James Bond into the future.”

    And crucially, Barbara Broccoli:

“My life has been dedicated to maintaining and building upon the extraordinary legacy that was handed to Michael and me by our father, producer Cubby Broccoli. I have had the honour of working closely with four of the tremendously talented actors who have played 007 and thousands of wonderful artists within the industry. With the conclusion of ‘No Time to Die’ and Michael retiring from the films, I feel it is time to focus on my other projects.”

Broccoli and Wilson stepping back is perhaps less of a surprise these days since she in particular has expressed frustration with the Amazon deal. And this way, the duo will have some small say in the future, but also enjoy what is surely a healthy payday.

Having changed his mind about taking a break from the rugged, wind-whipped dunes of Arrakis following ‘Dune: Part Two,’ Denis Villeneuve has actively begun putting the pieces together for a third ‘Dune’ outing.

    Pxt18Jw7zmtazBCTzSPmI5

It’s not entirely surprising, since The first ‘Dune’ released day-and-date on streaming in 2021 amid the pandemic, earned $410 million globally, while 2024’s follow-up brought in $714.6 million globally.

But while Villeneuve looked to be pivoting to another big movie, he’s since confirmed that his focus is now the next ‘Dune,’ likely ‘Dune: Messiah,’ adapting the next book in Frank Herbert’s sprawling novel series.

And according to Deadline, the filmmaker now has his eye on a big name to join the cast: Robert Pattinson.

The actor, known for the ‘Twilight’ franchise and a host of other work since (including the title role in ‘The Batman’) is the subject of interest from Villeneuve and backers Legendary for a key role.

We’d be remiss at this point, if we didn’t point out that this is far from a done deal; in fact, no offer has been made. Yet The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Pattinson is circling the role of the chief villain in the film, one that is possibly Scytale from the Herbert stories.

The new ‘Dune’ would continue the story of Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides, who has a powerful and dark destiny to become ruler of the various worlds.

Villeneuve has been clear, however, that this won’t be the third part of a trilogy.

This is what the director said last year:

“First, it’s important that people understand that for me, it was really a diptych. It was really a pair of movies that will be the adaptation of the first book. That’s done and that’s finished. If I do a third one, which is in the writing process, it’s not like a trilogy. It’s strange to say that, but if I go back there, it’s to do something that feels different and has its own identity.”

Villeneuve has been working on the script with regular collaborator Jon Spaihts.

Who will be in ‘Dune: Messiah’?

Given where the story goes, it’s seemingly a given that stars Timothée Chalamet, Florence Pugh and Zendaya will all return, since Paul Atreides, Princess and Irulan and Chani all feature in the ongoing narrative, not the least because their love/power triangle will be a key part of it.

Also likely to come back? We’d expect Anya Taylor-Joy‘s Alia Atreides: Paul’s sister, a powerful figure in the Bene Gesserit, who was in just one scene in ‘Dune: Part Two,’ but has an expanded role to play going forward.

Plus Javier Bardem’s Fremen leader Stilgar.

    And that’s not all…

Who else will –– spoiler alert! –– be back for the third ‘Dune’ movie?

Jason Momoa in 'Dune'. Photo: Warner Bros.

We’re putting this one in its own section, since it constitutes a spoiler and we don’t want anyone who hasn’t read the ‘Dune’ books to have their enjoyment curtailed.

During a recent interview, Jason Momoa revealed that his sword master and mentor Duncan Idaho would be back for the new movie, despite his character dying in the first one.

Here’s what Momoa said on ‘Today’:

“I’m making a comeback. You heard it first, right here with you, baby! Well, I’m not sure if I’m going to get in trouble or not, but it’s the same thing like ‘Game of Thrones’, you know what I mean? If you didn’t read the books, it’s not my fault, right? Yeah, there’s going to be… I’m going to be coming back.”

For the record, and again, spoiler alert: in one of the later books of Frank Herbert’s series, Duncan comes back as a clone.

What else is Robert Pattinson working on?

Pattinson was most recently on screens in Bong Joon Ho’s new sci-fi satire ‘Mickey 17’ about a man who serves on a spaceship who is replaced with a clone of himself every time he dies on board. The film was not a success at the box office.

He’s also worked on Lynne Ramsey’s new comedy horror drama ‘Die, My Love,’ opposite Jennifer Lawrence and has filmed romantic movie ‘The Drama.’

Right now, the actor is at work on Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ for Universal.

And, of course, there is his other big Warners job, Matt Reeves’ long-gestating ‘The Batman’ sequel, which should kick off filming at the end of this year, though it has been through several delays already while Reeves works on the script.

But if Pattinson is able to squeeze in a trip to Arrakis –– assuming he does lock into the movie –– this summer, that would mean him being on set for three giant movies this year alone.

When will the third ‘Dune’ movie touch down in theaters?

Neither Warner Bros. nor Legendary has made any statement about the release date for the new movie.

While Warners had been holding a December 2026 slot for a Villeneuve movie, but that would seem a very tough turnaround for something on the level of a ‘Dune,’ especially when production is only scheduled for later this summer. But watch this space!

Launching on HBO and Max on Sunday, November 17th with its first episode, this six-episode new series is set in the recognizable portrayal of ‘Dune’ as established by director Denis Villeneuve with his two epic movies.

Yet it’s also different enough –– partly because it’s set 10,000 years before those films takes place and has a decidedly alternate viewpoint –– that it succeeds in being a worthwhile supplement to the movies and boasts an impressively epic scale.

Long shelved on the list of titles deemed “unfilmable,” Frank Herbert’s sci-fi epic novel ‘Dune’ has been brought to screens before –– David Lynch tried it in the 1980s with his mostly unsuccessful effort, while Denis Villeneuve has seen a lot more critical praise (not to mention box office power and awards) for his own 2021 effort, which led to this year’s follow-up.

But in an era where studios and other media companies long to keep the cash cows mooing, a couple of films years apart was never going to be enough. Hence, the TV spin-off, adapted from 2012 novel ‘Sisterhood of Dune’ by Herbert’s son Brian and prolific genre author Kevin J. Anderson, who have continued the series.

Fortunately, ‘Dune: Prophecy’ ranks among the better supplement series, spotlighting a different chunk of the ‘Dune’ timeline and, as the novel’s title (and original title for the show, ‘Dune: Sisterhood’) suggests, a fresh perspective on the history and power struggles inherent in the story.

While the ‘Dune’ movies certainly boast impressive and impactful women, including Zendaya’s Chani and Rebecca Ferguson’s Lady Jessica Atreides, they have skewed more towards the masculine side of the story, with Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides the anchor.’

‘Prophecy’ instead forefronts Emily Watson’s Valya Harkonnen and sister Tula, who are looking to maintain the fledgling power of the mysterious Bene Gesserit movement, which seeks to guide the powerful houses of the imperium while also battling to restore their family’s honor.

    Script and Direction

‘Dune: Prophecy’ has not been without its challenges –– it has gone through at least one team on its way to screens (the executive producer credits are an archeological dig through previous showrunners), but developers Diane Ademu-John and Alison Schapker (with Schapker as the current overseer of the series) have managed to bring the story to life successfully.

Like Villeneuve’s movies, there is still the chilly air of plot over character at times, but the expansive running time of six episodes means there is certainly more room for development of the characters themselves.

Probably the best way to describe this new show is ‘Dune’ crossed with ‘Game of Thrones,’ as the story (set 10,000 years before the events of the movies) has familiar themes of jockeying for power that the films use as a backdrop for its tale of a messiah and its action. Here, those machinations are front and center, the Bene Gesserit order leading the way in plotting the future of the empire by pulling strings through breeding programs and setting themselves up as advisors to the leaders of the great houses.

The scripts are meaty and work well in context –– this certainly feels like it belongs in the ‘Dune’ movie universe but isn’t just more of the same.

Similarly, the direction of the show establishes a visual style that is akin to the ‘Dune’ films, yet has its own personality, set in chilly palaces and featuring water much more as a motif than the dusty dunes of Arrakis (though there is a key plot point/character whose story have their roots in the familiar desert locale).

Main director Anna Foerster sets the tone and style early on, and the four episodes given to press certainly don’t dip in quality on that front.

Oh, but as with ‘Game of Thrones’ there are the occasional moments (which fall away as the season moves on) where it feels like HBO pressure to deliver exposition while people have sex.

    ‘Dune: Prophecy’: Performances

Though it features two powerful central figures (and fantastic actors playing them), the show never feels overbalanced.

    Emily Watson as Valya Harkonnen

Emily Watson as Mother Superior Valya Harkonnen in 'Dune: Prophecy'. Photo: Courtesy of HBO.
Emily Watson as Mother Superior Valya Harkonnen in ‘Dune: Prophecy’. Photo: Courtesy of HBO.

Watson is in her element here, playing the imperious and crafty, yet believably driven Valya, who both wants to make sure the Bene Gesserit’s mission stays intact but also has plans to restore her family to what she sees as its rightful position of power.

The actor is excellent as this sort of role, as Valya comes to life in way that is truly satisfying.

    Olivia Williams as Tula Harkonnen

Like her co-star, Williams delivers a commanding, if more vulnerable performance. Whereas some shows might have sidelined Tula, ‘Prophecy’ finds plenty for her to do as she takes over running the Bene Gesserit school in her sister’s absence.

Williams is trusted with some great moments and carries them all off.

    Travis Fimmel as Desmond Hart

Travis Fimmel as Desmond Hart in 'Dune: Prophecy'. Photo: Courtesy of HBO.
Travis Fimmel as Desmond Hart in ‘Dune: Prophecy’. Photo: Courtesy of HBO.

Fimmel plays a man whose motivations we won’t talk about too much so as to avoid spoilers, but suffice to say he’s a soldier with a secret, and he’s seeking to win favor from the emperor –– oh, and he’s no fan of Valya and her sect. His subtle yet burning charisma is a good counterpoint to the more mannered, colder performances of some of the other main cast.

    Sarah-Sofie Boussnina as Princess Ynez

Sarah-Sofie Boussnina as Princess Ynez Corrino in 'Dune: Prophecy'. Photo: Courtesy of HBO.
Sarah-Sofie Boussnina as Princess Ynez Corrino in ‘Dune: Prophecy’. Photo: Courtesy of HBO.

Boussina’s princess is a key part of the early going –– daughter of the Emperor, she’s a prospect for a house-uniting marriage, which goes badly in a way nobody quite sees coming. The young actor brings spirit and attitude to her role.

Mark Strong as Emperor Javicco Corrino

Strong is having a good run on HBO of late, between this and his role on ‘The Penguin.’ Here, his emperor is a man who is concerned that he’s inherited all his power and is sometimes unsure how to wield it. He can be led by others, but Strong brings him to complicated life.

    Other notable characters

The various young women who attend the Bene Gesserit school all have their own personalities, and a couple come into play well in the main storyline.

    Final Thoughts

A worthy companion to the big screen offerings, ‘Dune: Prophecy’ shares a few of its weaknesses but finds its own strength in the characters and the welcome amount of time it has to develop them.

With only four episodes of the six available, it’s hard to tell if it’ll stick the landing of the first season, but the signs are good so far.

‘Dune: Prophecy’ receives 7.5 out of 10 stars.

With ‘Dune: Part Two’ raking in over $637 million at the global box office, what is next for ‘Dune’? In a conversation with Entertainment Weekly in 2021, Director Denis Villeneuve says he’s “always envisioned three movies.” to fully round out the Paul Atreides story. He has also mentioned that a script for the third movie is in the works.

“I always envisioned three movies. It’s not that I want to do a franchise, but this is ‘Dune,’ and ‘Dune’ is a huge story. In order to honor it, I think you would need at least three movies. That would be the dream. To follow Paul Atreides and his full arc would be nice.”

Filming a sci-fi epic is no easy task, and the director mentions the possibility of taking a break between ‘Dune: Part Two’ and ‘Dune: Messiah’. However, the third film, ‘Dune: Messiah’ is in active development.
