    • Warner Bros.’ based DC Studios is developing a script about Bane and Deathstroke.
    • The DC villains have both been seen on screen before.
    • Matthew Orton is writing the screenplay.

Even with ‘Superman‘ flying his way back to screens next year, Warner Bros. and DC Studios are staying focused on its bad guys right now.

The companies have ‘The Penguin’ on screen right now via HBO and Max (to solid reviews and healthy viewing figures), while fellow Batman wrongdoer The Joker will return to theaters –– albeit in altered, Joaquin Phoenix form –– via ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ on October 4th.

And it would seem they’re not done putting the rogue’s gallery front and center, as The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Bane and Deathstroke appear likely to get their own movie.

Bane, who was created by writer Chuck Dixon and artist Graham Nolan in the 1990s, is a hulking masked villain who was raised in a Caribbean prison and who (in a later storyline) was the subject of a terrible steroid test, leaving his strength boosted but with a lingering serum addiction –– hence his trademark mask.

The character on the page might be best known for the ‘Knightfall’ storyline where he broke Batman’s back and saw his profile rise among fans. He has been all over video games and TV series (including a funny take in the animated ‘Harley Quinn’ show) and made his biggest impact on the big screen as part of Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Dark Knight Rises,’ where he was played by Tom Hardy.

As for Deathstroke, he was introduced in 1980, created by writer Marv Wolfman and artist George Perez, and originally was an antagonist for the Teen Titans. His notoriety and popularity has skyrocketed since then, and he’s faced off against Batman and the Justice League.

Esai Morales played the character in the recent live-action ‘Titans‘ series, while Joe Manganiello cameoed as the one-eyed killer during an end-credits tag in ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League,’ though it didn’t lead to future appearances.

And that has been his fate of late –– he was going to be the villain of ‘The Batman’, back when Ben Affleck was directing and starring. At another point, he was attached to star in an eponymous movie from ‘The Raid’ director Gareth Evans.

His credits also include ‘Operation Finale,’ and an episode of ‘Moon Knight.’

When would the new Bane/Deathstroke movie be in theaters?

With the movie still at the script stage, it’s much too early to be considering release dates just yet.

  • 12 Things You Won’t Believe ‘Justice League’ Got Away With

HUGE SPOILERS AHEAD: Do not read if you have not seen “Justice League” yet.

Hard truth time, guys: “Justice League” has a lot of plot holes and even more problematic storytelling decisions.

That’s pretty much par for the course with the DC Extended Universe at this point. From wacky Mother Box shenanigans to pretty much everything involving Aquaman, here are the biggest WTF moments we can’t believe this big-budget superhero epic managed to get away with.

    1. Why Would the Amazon Warriors Wear Leather Armor Bikini Things?A lot of Wonder Woman fans have pointed out an obvious disparity between “Wonder Woman” and “Justice League.” In the first movie, the Amazons wear rugged, battle-ready armor. In the big flashback battle in “Justice League,” their armor is quite a bit skimpier and more revealing.

It’s not like technology has changed on Themyscira in that time. The only thing that has changed between the two movies is the addition of male gaze.

    2. Why Resurrect Superman to Fight a Threat More Powerful Than the Thing That Killed Him?

It’s a little bizarre that the crux of Batman’s plan in the movie involved resurrecting Superman to help the team fight Steppenwolf, especially when Superman wasn’t strong enough to stop Doomsday in “BvS” without sacrificing himself in the process.

Why did Batman think one more hero would magically turn the tide? We’re starting to think he’s not the master strategist we’ve been led to believe.

    3. Why Introduce Aquaman if Water Has Nothing to Do With the Story or Final Fight?

Aquaman in this movie is basically a super powered ’90s Dan Cortese, but with a strong does of Lorenzo Llamas in “Renegade.”

There’s a lot we don’t understand about Aquaman’s role in the movie, including why he claims to be a young man despite being included in that clearly ancient mural of him saving the fishing village. Obviously, there’s a lot of Aquaman-related material that was cut from the final film. But at some point, you have to wonder why DC was so eager to introduce him now when his powers were so irrelevant to the plot? Why Aquaman and not Martian Manhunter or Green Lantern?

    4. Why Does Batman Let That Thug Go That He Used for Bait in the Opening Scene?
This opening sequence is so, so clunky in terms of editing and camera angles. And here, we get the impression that the DCEU version of Batman isn’t a guy who sweats the finer details of his job. Why else would he go through all the trouble of using that robber/thief as bait for a Parademon and then just let the guy flee?

Maybe the reason Gotham City is still a hellhole after two decades is that Batman can’t be bothered to actually round up the criminals he catches and bring them into GCPD custody. Oh, and did you like how this thief came to the conclusion that the parademon Batman captured was a “scout” for an army of aliens from outer space? Like, that was the first thing he came up with?! On his own?!

Also, if Steppenwolf’s weird, Watto-looking henchmen are all over the world, as Batman claims at one point, then why isn’t the world’s news or government agencies covering or policing them, respectively? Why does Jim Gordon only have a child’s sketch of the space beasties to work with? There would be pictures or YouTube vids everywhere of these things.

    5. Why Does the Final Battle Waste Batman by Having Fire a Ray Gun?

Entertainment Inc., Ratpac-Dune Entertainment LLC and Ratpac Entertainment, LLC HARWOOD Photographer

Batman is a useful guy to have around in a number of sticky situations, but an alien invasion isn’t necessarily one of them.

As we saw, Batman’s lack of powers made it difficult for him to take on even one Parademon, much less an army of them. But rather than find some way of allowing Batman’s intelligence and resources to win the day, the movie reduced him to doing the one thing he’s NEVER supposed to do — fire a gun at his enemies.

    6. Why Does This World Mourn the Loss of Superman as a Beacon of Hope?

We get it. The entire world is in mourning because they lost their brightest beacon of hope. But honestly, we’re not sure why anyone in the DCEU has reason to mourn the loss of this version of Superman.

What exactly did he do in “Man of Steel” or “Batman v Superman” that would have earned such an outpouring of love and respect? He helped wipe half of Metropolis off the map, couldn’t save an entire government courthouse from blowing up, and generally spent the entire time he was in costume moping and being miserable.

    7. Why Does Superman Hulk Out on the Justice League When He First Comes Back to Life?

Granted, it’s not like the DCEU filmmakers have established any clear rules when it comes to resurrection, but was there really a need for Superman to go on a murderous rampage as soon as he woke up?

If this guy is truly as kind and hopeful as the movie claims, wouldn’t he have a little more control of his actions than that? And wouldn’t he, you know, remember who Wonder Woman was? Wouldn’t he remember that he is a big fan of truth, justice and NOT MURDERING PEOPLE?!

    8. Why Does Superman’s Face Look so Bad?

WB infamously had to pay millions to digitally remove actor Henry Cavill‘s mustache during re-shoots. (The actor had a lip broom due to his work on the in-production “Mission: Impossible 6” that Paramount would not let him shave to help accommodate the “JL” reshoots.)

But when the results look this uncanny valley-y, at some point you have to question why they even bothered. Is a mustachioed Superman really worse than one whose face constantly looks like the villain from “Shrek” meets Bruce Campbell’s chin?

    9. Did The Filmmakers Not See ‘Wonder Woman’?

Batman had some pretty unkind things to say about Wonder Woman in this movie, accusing her of hiding from the world and failing to inspire others. Except, we see early on that she’s spending her free time stopping terrorists and generally saving lives across Europe. And this summer’s “Wonder Woman” established that she’s been quietly but steadfastly saving the world ever since WWI. Excuse her if she prefers not to be a showboat about it, Bruce.

    10. So The Justice League Is Totally Cool With Leaving the Last of the Planet-Destroying Mother Boxes Unguarded, Atop of a Car, in a Parking Lot?

The Justice League knew that they were stuck in a race against time to track down the Mother Boxes and stop Steppenwolf from ushering in another generic, CG-fueled superhero showdown. So why did it not occur to anyone on the team that maybe they should keep an eye on their lone Mother Box, rather than leave it sitting on the hood of a car, just waiting to be stolen away?

Honestly, they probably deserved to lose that final battle.

    11. What the Heck Is Up With the Mother Boxes?

Honestly, we could write a book about the number of Mother Box-related plot holes in this movie.

Why did they wait so long to activate? Sure, Steppenwolf explained that they waited until Superman was gone, but what about the thousands of years before Superman’s arrival, when Earth had no superhuman protectors? And why were all the Mother Boxes hidden on Earth, rather than scattered across the universe?

And if the Mother Boxes didn’t activate until Superman’s death, how was Dr. Stone able to use one to save his son, Cyborg, and allow for that cameo in “Batman v Superman”?

    12. Why Tease the Legion of Doom for ‘Justice League 2’ and Not, You Know, Darkseid?

The post-credits scene showed us the return of Lex Luthor and the DCEU debut of Deathstroke. But why focus on those villains and behave as if Deathstroke has been at all relevant to the DCEU before now?

Why not tease the debut of Darkseid, who’s clearly the real threat pulling the strings on Steppenwolf? Back when WB envisioned “Justice League” as a two-part film, we imagine Darkseid was next in line. But at this point, who knows when or if we’ll see the DCEU pick up that loose thread?

  • DC Giving Joe Manganiello’s ‘Deathstroke’ His Own Movie, With a Director in Talks

The Warner Bros./DC universe keeps expanding and contracting in exciting but confusing ways.

The latest news, out of TheWrap, says “The Raid” director Gareth Evans is in “early discussions” to both write and direct a “Deathstroke” film.

Joe Manganiello is attached to star, TheWrap added, just like he was attached to play Deathstroke as the villain of “The Batman” with Ben Affleck.2017 NHL Awards And Expansion DraftThen Affleck stepped down as director, and Matt Reeves was hired and scrapped Affleck’s draft to start over. It was unclear what would happen to Deathstroke in the new draft of “The Batman,” but now it sounds like the assassin is getting upgraded to his own project.

According to TheWrap, Gareth Evans had passed on directing “Justice League Dark,” but his “Deathstroke” pitch impressed DC execs enough for them to give a greenlight for a spinoff film.

Premiere Of Sony Picture Classics' 'The Raid 2' - Red CarpetThe report did not come with quotes from Evans or Manganiello, and it does seem to be pretty early in the game.

But it’s never too early for fans to react to the idea of a Deathstroke movie:

So, overall, fans seem pretty excited … or at least cautiously optimistic. DC does have a lot going on right now, with plans for more DC Extended Universe films, plus standalone movies not connected to the DCEU. It’s not clear which projects will actually make it to the big screen.

The next film up is connected to the DCEU and it’s “Justice League,” starring Ben Affleck as Batman. It opens November 17.

  • ‘The Batman’ Production to Start Spring 2017, According to Joe Manganiello

It’s still unclear when “The Batman,” the upcoming standalone DC flick starring Ben Affleck’s version of the Caped Crusader, will hit theaters, but it may be sooner than fans anticipated: One of the film’s stars just revealed when the film will start production.

Joe Manganiello, who will play villain Deathstroke in the flick, dropped the news in a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, spilling the beans that it looks like a spring 2017 start date is in the cards for the feature. The actor told ET that he was currently “getting ready to go shoot Batman in the spring.”

Part of that preparation has included at least one screen test for director Affleck, who shared some raw footage of Manganiello in his Deathstroke garb on Twitter back in August, causing DC fanboys and -girls to freak out — and wonder whether or not the deadly assassin would be appearing in “Justice League.” While the possibility of a cameo in that film remains to be seen (Manganiello did pop up in Europe during production), it was later revealed that Deathstroke would be the main villain in “The Batman,” set for release after the DC team-up flick.

We still don’t have any definitive word on when “The Batman” will hit theaters, but based on DC’s current release schedule — and now this new production information — it’s not likely to arrive before 2018.

  • Joe Manganiello to Play Deathstroke in Ben Affleck’s Batman Movie

Starz Digital And The Cinema Society Host A Special Screening Of "Tumbledown" - ArrivalsThe internet was abuzz last week when Ben Affleck publicly shared some cryptic footage of what appeared to be DC Comics villain Deathstroke. While it was unclear at the time whether or not Deathstroke would be popping up in “Justice League: Part One,” or perhaps Affleck’s upcoming solo Batman movie, there was plenty of excitement from fans about the antagonist joining the DC expanded universe. Now, we have some more information about when and where moviegoers can expect to see the character in action, and who exactly is the mysterious actor that’s playing him.

Geoff Johns, DC Entertainment’s president and chief creative officer, revealed in an interview with the Wall Street Journal that Joe Manganiello will suit up as Deathstroke, and will feature prominently in the standalone Batman flick, which Johns is co-writing with Affleck. The “True Blood” and “Magic Mike” star was rumored to be the man behind the mask when the video hit social media on August 29, after some eagle-eyed sleuths noticed that the actor had recently started following “Justice League” director Zack Snyder on Twitter, and had recently popped up around Europe — and specifically in London — where the DC team-up film is currently shooting.

It’s not clear if that means that Manganiello will also cameo as Deathstroke in “Justice League,” and Johns declined to comment on the matter to WSJ. That non-denial certainly indicates that there’s a good chance the character could make his DC debut earlier than Affleck’s solo Batflick, though of course, nothing is certain yet.

Stay tuned. The standalone Batman movie doesn’t have a release date yet, but is unlikely to hit theaters before 2018. “Justice League: Part One” is set for release on November 10, 2017.

  • Ben Affleck’s New Batman Tease Has Fans Freaking Out

UPDATE: Ben Affleck’s tease (below) was originally assumed to be for “Justice League,” but according to TheWrap it’s for his own future solo Batman movie. As the site put it, “Deathstroke will, in fact, be the main antagonist of the Batman standalone movie he’s directing, TheWrap has exclusively learned from an individual with knowledge of the situation.” They added that “Deathstroke will square off against Batman on the big screen in the movie titled ‘The Batman.’”

    Original post:

Ben Affleck is truly the Batman DC needs right now, ’cause he knows how to keep the fandom hyped for “Justice League” and beyond. Your boy just dropped a video tease on Twitter, showing what appears to be Deathstroke and … Mr. Freeze?

What is he doing? What is he telling us?

    Here’s the tweet:

The replies are great. The takeaway seems to be that Deathstroke will be a villain in “Justice League,” but we should always save room for trolling. It’s not like anyone has really spelled out what’s happening here. Steppenwolf has already been confirmed as the main villain of “Justice League,” but there could be a B villain.

Who is Deathstroke? As Collider explained:

“For those who are unfamiliar with the character, his real name is Slade Wilson, and he first appeared in The New Teen Titans in 1980. He’s been a villain that’s been all over the DC Universe and he’s gone toe-to-toe with Batman, Green Arrow, Black Canary, Flash, Green Lantern, and more. He’s been on the supervillain teams Injustice League, Suicide Squad, Secret Society of Super Villains, H.I.V.E., Checkmate, Team 7, and the League of Assassins. And yet for all of his affiliations and grudges, he doesn’t have any superpowers, or at least no more superpowers than someone like Batman. He’s really smart and he’s a good fighter.”

Their guess is that Deathstroke is a cameo role, with Batman facing him early in the film, as a possible hold-over for later use in another DC Extended Universe film. But don’t take that to the Batcave, it’s just a theory, for now.

“Justice League” will be released November 17, 2017.
