  • Ryan Reynolds Writing New Movie to Reunite with Hugh Jackman

    Preview:

    • Ryan Reynolds is writing a new movie.
    • He’s aiming to re-team with ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’s Hugh Jackman and Shawn Levy.
    • It’s reportedly not a Marvel movie.

If you enjoyed ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ (and given its record-breaking, $1.33 billion haul to date, many of you have, more than once), you’ll be happy to learn that stars Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman and director Shawn Levy, are looking to reunite for a new project.

    FW15JuJGFTtwqnkn4XqPf5

But before visions of snarky clashes and cameos from other Marvel characters begin to dance in your head, a reality check: according to Reynolds, the project that he’s cooking up does not involve their comic-book characters.

Speaking to Variety’s Award Circuit podcast, Reynolds had this to say on the matter:

“I’m spending the year writing. I’m writing a movie for myself, Hugh [Jackman] and Shawn [Levy] to do that is not Marvel.”

So what is the new Ryan Reynolds movie about?

Ryan Reynolds attends the UK Fan Event of Marvel Studios' 'Deadpool & Wolverine' at Eventim Apollo, London on July 11th, 2024.

That’s the billion-dollar question at this point. Reynolds offered up no details about what the new movie might entail, beyond the fact that he’s spending the next few months, possibly the next year, working on a script that will see him share the screen with Jackman once again, and for Levy to call the shots.

The trio are, of course, all good friends –– Reynolds and Jackman having previously shared the screen in ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’ and developed a bond, while Levy directed Jackman for ‘Real Steel.’

We don’t yet know where the new movie will land but given the enormous success of their previous collaboration (Marvel trappings or no), you have to guess that studios and streamers to will be scrambling to get a look and secure their services.

Also, despite Reynolds naysaying, the possibility remains that he’s quietly coming up with ideas for a future ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ team-up, assuming they’re not already on the roster for the upcoming ‘Avengers’ movies due to hit screens in 2026 and 2027.

What else do Reynolds and Jackman have coming up?

Separately, Reynolds has a role (possibly a voice part) in next year’s ‘Animal Friends’ and is also in the cast for John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein’s follow-up to ‘Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,’ called ‘Mayday,’ which is reportedly about a stranded pilot.

Add to that a variety of projects in development and his various business ventures, including co-chairman of Wrexham Football Club, whose ongoing efforts will be documented when Hulu series ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ returns next year.

As for Jackman, he’s playing a farmer in sheep detective mystery (not a joke) ‘Three Bags Full,’ and is co-starring with Kate Hudson in ‘Song Sung Blue,’ about a real-life husband-and-wife Neil Diamond tribute act.

The actor and singer also has a series of live shows in New York with dates across 2025.

And there remains, of course, speculation that the two actors are hot favorites to host next March’s Oscar ceremony. Nothing has been announced yet, but they’re certainly on the wishlist for the producers.

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with Anthony Mackie and Morena Baccarin about their work on ‘’Elevation’, Mackie’s character’s journey to save his son, why Baccarin’s character helps him, preparing for the action sequences, and working with director George Nolfi.

Moviefone: To begin with, Anthony, can you talk about your character’s journey to save his son and the unlikely alliance he is forced to make with Nina?

Anthony Mackie: Well, it starts off with him in a very tumultuous situation with the loss of his loved one and now the potential loss of his child. So, he’s kind of forced into this position with his balls to the wall and he must make allies and he has to kind of play down his hatred for his enemies to achieve what he wants to achieve. So, he’s kind of put in between a rock and a hard place. He doesn’t want to be there, but it’s something he must do.

MF: Morena, can you talk about Nina’s plan to kill the monsters and why she decides to help Will?

Morena Baccarin: I don’t think she wants to. I think it’s something that she sort of at first does against her will. I think initially it’s a very selfish thing that she does, “If we have a chance to survive, I am that chance, to figure out how to get this thing. I’m almost there. I need to figure out how to kill this thing.” Then I think as she’s going on this journey, she realizes it’s so much bigger than just her and it becomes much more meaningful for her. I think the relationship with Will is obviously very complicated and it’s kind of like the crutch for her that then becomes the thing that she can really rely on and becomes the valuable aspect of her life. Will finds out things about her and why she is who she is, and she also takes a lot of responsibility at that point for what she’s done in his life and the role she’s played in his family’s life.

MF: Anthony, can you talk about how you prepared for the action sequences?

AM: Well, George forced us into altitude acclamation. That’s the stuff he made up for us to do, which he didn’t do! He didn’t do none of the training with us, but it was more so just us going hiking and running every day. It was a lot of physical work because we knew how much running we were going to have to do during shooting. So, the longer we were there, the easier it got. After that first week, I was pretty much adjusted but that first hike was hard.

MF: Finally, Morena, can you talk about your training process and working with director George Nolfi on set?

MB: I was impressed. We all went out on this hike together and Mackie was like a good half a mile ahead of me, I think most of the time. I am like sucking in air and my lungs are burning. Maddie (Hasson), who at the time was smoking a pack a day, was also far ahead. I was like, “What the heck?” Then I realized, of course, she’s 20 years younger, but it did not get easier for me. We had oxygen canisters on set all the time, and I utilized them quite a bit. That elevation is no joke. It was mostly that. It was mostly training and hiking and running and hiking to just feel like we could run at a sprint up a hill if we had to.

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with Dafne Keen about her work on ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’, how she found out she would be returning, returning to the character of Laura, how she’s changed since ‘Logan’, reuniting with Hugh Jackman, working with the rest of the cast, which scenes were improvised, the action sequences, the challenges of keeping her appearance a secret, collaborating with director Shawn Levy, what she learned from Ryan Reynolds, joining the MCU and the possibility of her appearing in future Marvel movies.

Moviefone: To begin with, when did you learn that you would be returning to play Laura / X-23 in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ and were you given the entire script to read before shooting?

Dafne Keen: I got a call from my agent to tell me, and then I had a FaceTime with Shawn, and I had a bunch of guy friends over at my house and I locked them outside in the garden while I was on the phone to Shawn. Then Shawn said to me, “All your scenes are with huge actors, but I can’t tell you who.” Then I got the full script, but it was so heavily spoiler free in the sense that they changed all the names for everything, but I understood the story. I just didn’t know who anyone was. So, watching the film was cool. I was like, “Oh, that’s crazy.” I kind of figured it out because I’d go into a costume fitting and I’d see a picture of someone on the wall and I’d be like, “Wait, who are they playing?” It was cool. It was fun and I’m happy that I got to read the whole script and it was exciting.

MF: What was it like working with Hugh Jackman again all these years after ‘Logan’?

DK: Yeah, it was weirdly, it was like no time had passed. We started acting and it was like we were doing ‘Logan’ yesterday. It was weird and wonderful.

MF: Can you talk about how Laura has changed since ‘Logan’ and did you create a backstory for yourself about how she ended up in the Void?

DK: I think as an actor you must. I think it was fun playing her as an older character, especially now because she’s got this sense of gratitude that she didn’t have in ‘Logan’. She’d been so wronged by men and by men, I mean humans. I think she had no faith in humanity, and I think Charles (Xavier) and Logan restored that in ‘Logan’. After losing them, she kind of has this sense of loss but still gratefulness for them and getting to have her reunite with Logan is such a huge thing for her and getting to play that felt like a big emotional beat for that character.

MF: As a comic book fan, I think ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ might feature the greatest superhero team-up of all time. What was it like for you to work with Jennifer Garner, Wesley Snipes and Channing Tatum and be a part of this incredible onscreen team-up?

DK: It was so cool and they’re just the most lovely, wonderful people. We had the best time and as a fan it was just crazy when you hear the superheroes you are sharing the screen with are Gambit, Elektra and Blade. Then you meet them and they’re the loveliest, most nurturing, funniest people, so we just had the greatest time on set.

MF: Famously, Ryan Reynolds loves to improvise on set. Did you have a chance to improvise with him in any of your scenes?

DK: I didn’t get to do as much, but I got to witness Channing and Ryan do a lot of it, which was fun. I felt like I was in a master class for comedy. It was really cool, and everyone was so talented, but they had a lot of comedic beats that I got to just stand back and enjoy.

MF: Can you give us an example of a scene that Ryan and Channing improvised?

DK: I think the line where we’re in the cave, and Channing’s like, “I shot out my mama and I said, What’s up, Doc?” That was an improv, and we were all dying. That whole interaction between Ryan and Channing was improvised. The “Who’s your dialect coach? The Minions”, I think that was an ad lib. It was so impressive, and it was cool to then be at the premiere and all their improvisations was getting so much love and laughter. It was exciting to know that it was all kind of in the script, but it was all like an ad lib variation of it.

MF: What was it like filming the final battle sequence in the Void? How many days did that take to shoot?

DK: It took a while. It took a week I think, and I had to go back because I had all the wire work for climbing up the skull. I had to come back in the end of January, and it was so fun. We had the best time. It’s the most fun I’ve had doing stunts ever. To get to train with these people, it’s incredible. I came into training, and it was like Channing, Wesley, Jennifer, Ryan, Hugh. It was so cool, and we were all just so excited to be there and we all love these characters so much. We all felt so lucky to be there, which I think is such a rare thing. A lot of people are ready to go home and to wrap the day and we were all just happy to stay. If they’d ask us to do 20 hours of overtime, we would’ve all been like, “Yeah, I’m here and I’m so excited to do this.” It was cool. We were all kind of nerding out with everyone with their weapons. I had the claws back and I was so excited about the glasses. Channing was so excited about throwing the cards. He’d learned a bunch of impressive card tricks. It was very cool.

MF: Can you talk about the challenges of keeping your involvement in the movie a secret, especially when you were doing press for ‘The Acolyte’?

DK: I enjoyed it. It was quite fun. It’s cool to do these interviews and I got to be like, “It’s so sad. I’m not in it.” I knew I’d filmed it and we’d had a great time on set. Also, it felt exciting. It was a cool surprise for the fans, and it felt like such a special thing, and it was such a special thing for me. It was quite funny because my two co-stars and my very good friends, Amandla (Stenberg) and Charlie (Barnett) who were in the show with me knew. So anytime I’d get asked around them, they would giggle. So, if you look at the interviews, they’re trying to look down and trying to be nonchalant when we all knew it. So, it was quite funny.

MF: Is it true that you were added to the film’s final trailer specifically so you could attend the premiere without any questions?

DK: I don’t really know. Maybe. I was going to go to the premiere as far as I know in the capacity of, “Oh, Hugh invited me.” That was the original lie, and then they were like, “We’re putting you in the trailer, which means you can come to the premiere.” So maybe it was to come to the premiere. That was the original plan, and it would’ve worked because we’re buddies. It is exciting. I was happy I got to go.

MF: What is Shawn Levy like as a director on set?

DK: I love that question because I love Shawn. Shawn is one of my favorite people to ever work with. He’s such a wonderful human being and such an incredible director. He’s got such incredible dexterity and such an amazing range of talent that he can do. I’ve seen him directing the funniest, most absurd scene, and then I saw him directing us in the bonfire scene, which was a kind of heavy, hard-hitting thing. He was so incredible at the nuance and knowing when things had to be cool and big and what he was doing for the fans and when they had to be small and human and raw and when he had to do cuts and when he didn’t. He was so kind of gentle in his directing with us, but so honest and so specific with his notes in a really special way. He also loves making films, and I love making films, so it was so cool to be around someone who kind of loved it and was excited to be there. Like I said, we were all just so excited to be there and Shawn was the first one and he infected us all with this incredible joy and excitement for the project. I truly feel so honored to have worked with him and I think he’s already one of the biggest directors, but I think he’s going to go down in the history books for me.

MF: In addition to being an actor, Ryan Reynolds is also a screenwriter and producer, and basically the force that makes these ‘Deadpool’ movies possible. What did you learn from working with him that you will apply to your own career moving forward?

DK: I learned so much from observing Ryan on set. He’s such an incredible creative. He’s so dedicated and so hardworking and he’s got such an incredible mind. I was so impressed by how he was on everything. We’d be acting and he would be acting and improving while thinking about the script change for another scene that they were going to shoot three days later while thinking about producing. It was so impressive to watch him, and I think him, and Hugh and Shawn are such incredible hard workers that I honestly felt like I was in a masterclass the whole time and five minutes with those guys felt like 20 years of lessons. I think Ryan really taught me a lot and I got to really observe his process, even just as an actor, he’s so impressive. He’s got such incredible range. You see him in a character like Deadpool where he’s being so funny, and he’s got scenes where he is being hilarious, absurd, ridiculous and outlandish. Then you see him when he is talking about Vanessa (Morena Baccarin) in the film and it’s completely heartbreaking and devastating and you can really see that in his career and in the things he’s picked. You can see completely comedic characters and then you see the character that he did in ‘The Voices’. I’ve always just really looked up to him as a creative. So, getting to share the screen with him was huge.

MF: Finally, thanks to ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’, ‘Logan’ and the character of Laura / X-23 is now cannon to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. How does it feel to be part of that legacy and is it possible that we will see you playing this character again in the MCU at some point?

DK: I mean, even hearing you say that ‘Logan’ is canon is so crazy to me. I’m still kind of absorbing that and the possibility is so exciting. I mean, I’ve said this a trillion times. I would play Laura for the rest of my life, and I would be content. She’s the most incredible character to play and I have so much fun playing her, and I have so much love for her, and I have so much love for Marvel. So, I’d pay them to have me back, honestly, if I’m being completely honest. So of course, I really hope I get a call, even if it is to do another tiny little silly cameo in something. I’d be happy. Any chance I get to be here again and get the claws back on, I’ll take it.

Picking up the threads planted at the end of ‘Echo,’ ‘Born Again’ will see Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock once again facing problems from Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin, who here is campaigning to be mayor of New York.

And from the teaser footage, it appears to focus on Williams as an actor trying to get the role of Wonder Man, with a little help from ‘Iron Man 3’ and ‘Shang-Chi’s Trevor Slattery, AKA Ben Kingsley.

Ed Harris will also appear in the show.

Wonder Man’ will hit in December 2025, so we’ll have to keep waiting to see what it has in store.

    • Henry Cavill will star in the ‘Voltron’ live-action movie.
    • ‘Red Notice’s Rawson Marshall Thurber is directing.
    • It’ll adapt the iconic anime series.

We all know Henry Cavill loves working in genre films and shows. He’s played Superman on the big screen, and on TV, he was the star of ‘The Witcher’ for three seasons.

And in his off-screen life, he’s into plenty of geek-tastic pursuits, including video games and table-top gaming.

It’s not all that surprising, then, to learn that he’s landed a major role in ‘Red Notice’ and ‘Central Intelligence’ director Rawson Marshall Thurber’s live-action take on anime series ‘Voltron’ for Amazon MGM Studios.

Details on Cavill’s role in the movie are unknown for now, but we can imagine him either playing a heroic mentor, or, to change things up, a scheming villain.

    What’s the story of ‘Voltron’?

    'Voltron: Legendary Defender.' Photo: Netflix.
    ‘Voltron: Legendary Defender.’ Photo: Netflix.

‘Voltron’ has its roots in the Japanese sci-fi series ‘Beast King GoLion’ and ‘Kikou Kantai Dairugger XV’.

American production World Events bought the rights for the States, then edited and dubbed the series as a syndicated show, titling it ‘Voltron: Defender of the Universe’, which ran in the mid-1980s.

The premise focused on five young pilots in a battalion named the Robot Lions, which are vehicles that merge to form a mega robot known as Voltron and take on a variety of enemies.

The show in animated form has already been rebooted twice, once for the NickToon channel in 2011, while the current version is on Netflix.

    K5dKiGYsXqtgpBfqmHEKc

It’s a compelling concept (one that has been referenced and parodied endlessly since its heyday) and a-live action version has been in development at different terms since the early 2000s.

The plot for the new movie, which Thurber wrote with Ellen Shanman, is a mystery for now, but we can expect a fair amount of giant robot combat. The director has been developing this one since at least 2022.

Who else will appear in ‘Voltron’?

    'Voltron: Legendary Defender.' Photo: Netflix.
    ‘Voltron: Legendary Defender.’ Photo: Netflix.

Cavill is not the first person cast in the new movie. He joins Daniel Quinn-Toye, a relative newcomer whose previous screen credit was a tiny role in a BBC sitcom called ‘Badults’ that ran in 2013 and 2014.

But Quinn-Toye has one other job that caught the eye of Thurber and Amazon MGM studios: the 21-year old actor, who attended London’s Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts as well as the Dance School of Scotland, was the understudy to Tom Holland in the ‘Spider-Man’ actor’s big return to the theater world this past spring in the West End production of ‘Romeo & Juliet.’ He also had small roles in the play itself.

When will ‘Voltron’ be on screens?

Amazon MGM Studios has yet to confirm a release date for the movie, though Thurber will kick off production this fall in Australia, so it could conceivably be with us next year. Given the likely post-production/effects workload, however, 2026 would be a more sensible target.

    • It’s the new movie from ‘The Place Beyond the Pines’ director Derek Cianfrance.
    • The movie is based on a strange true crime story.

Channing Tatum has not –– perhaps besides his role as Gambit in the wildly successful ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ –– enjoyed the most successful summer at the box office, with ‘Blink Twice’ a mild earner and ‘Fly Me to The Moon’ a big bomb.

He’ll be hoping for better things in future, and he’s now, per Deadline, locked in a new gig, agreeing to star ‘The Place Beyond the Pines’ and ‘Blue Velvet’ director Derek Cianfrance’s latest, true crime tale ‘Roofman’.

And with ‘Civil War’s Kirsten Dunst joining the movie, the cast has begun to come together.

‘Roofman’, co-written by Cianfrance and Kirt Gunn, follows Jeffrey Manchester (Tatum in the movie), an eccentric and charming serial robber who broke into more than 60 McDonald’s overnight via their roofs, then emptied the cash register in the morning after herding staff into freezers.

The former U.S. Army Reserve officer became known as the ‘Rooftop Robber’ or ‘Roofman’ and was known for his gentle demeanor and for rarely resorting to violence.

After he was caught and imprisoned in 2000, he escaped jail and then evaded capture by holing up for months in a Toys “R” Us and Circuit City store in North Carolina. He lived off baby food and would ride bicycles for exercise in the toy store.

After reportedly leaving his fingerprints on a ‘Catch Me If You Can’ DVD in the electronics store (irony alert!), he was recaptured and sent back to jail.

Dunst will play an employee at the Toys “R” Us who is struggling to make ends meet and to provide for her two girls. She has no idea that Jeffrey has been secretly watching her from inside the store and slowly falling for her.

When she meets him, she’s charmed and finds him endearing, and the two form a serious bond until she finds out the truth about him –– but even that can’t stop her for caring for him.

Where else will we see Channing Tatum and Kirsten Dunst?

Tatum will next be seen in Beth de Araújo’s drama ‘Josephine,’ about a young girl who witnesses a brutal attack in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, spurring a spiral of complicated behavior. The movie is now in post-production.

He’s also attached to a wide variety of projects, including new drama ‘Soundtrack of Silence’ and crime drama ‘Bloodlines.’

As for Dunst, she’s the subject of awards chatter for ‘Civil War,’ and has worked on a new drama called ‘Rhubarb,’ about adult siblings navigating the grief over their beloved pet’s death.

When will ‘Roofman’ be in theaters?

The film’s distribution rights are up for sale, so there is no news on a release date until it has found a home.

Audiences flocking to theaters to see Tim Burton and Michael Keaton’s return to the weird ‘Beetlejuice’ world they created in 1988 clearly invoked the ghost with the most, as the sequel ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ has wound up doing huge business at the box office.

The new movie launched in 4,575 theaters and rustled up a massive $110 million in its opening weekend.

And overseas, it debuted with $35.4 million, for a worldwide total of $145.4 million.

‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ has become the second-highest September opening –– and studio Warner Bros. will be happy, as it is slipping in between the two ‘It’ movies. The original, 2017’s ‘It’, earned $123 million, while sequel ‘It: Chapter 2’ took in $92 million.

This also marks the third best bow this year, behind just ‘Inside Out 2’ and ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’.

It was the latest success story for a summer season that has seen some big hits but had been lagging some in the last couple of weeks as it closed out.

This sequel picks up the story of the Deetz family –– Winona Ryder as Lydia Deetz and Catherine O’Hara as step-mom Delia, with Jenna Ortega joining as Lydia’s daughter Astrid –– suffers more trouble from “bio-exorcist” Beetlejuice (Keaton), who still has designs on Lydia.

The movie also features the likes of Justin Theroux, Willem Dafoe and Monica Bellucci.

Though it was more of a small-scale release, the original “Beetlejuice” built across several weeks became one of the highest-grossing movies of 1988 with $74.7 million and later inspired a Tony-nominated Broadway musical, which is still touring the country.

The cult appeal of that first film clearly helped drive interest in the new one, despite it arriving 36 years later.

While Burton’s sequel was grabbing plenty of business, only one other movie was a new release, and nothing else in the charts did particularly well.

A24 put horror thriller ‘The Front Room’ into 2,095 theaters, but it launched at 10th place with $1,663,954.

‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ slipped back to second and earned $7.2 million. The superhero buddy comedy doesn’t have to worry too much, though, as that was from its seventh weekend in release, a miracle in itself given how short release windows tend to be these days.

Not forgetting the fact that it has now made $614 million domestically and $1.287 billion globally. It’s the second-biggest movie of the year and 23rd largest of all time.

Dennis Quaid-starring biopic ‘Reagan’ clung to third place, making $5.2 million, ahead of fellow holdovers ‘Alien: Romulus’ ($3.9 million) and ‘It Ends With Us,’ which took in $3.7 million.

  • ‘Across the River and into the Trees’ – Liev Schreiber

Opening in theaters on August 30th is the new war drama ‘Across the River and into the Trees’, which is based on the 1950 novel by Ernest Hemingway.

Directed by Paula Ortiz (‘Teresa’), the film stars Liev Schreiber (‘Ray Donovan’ and ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’), Matilda De Angelis (‘Coco’), Josh Hutcherson (‘The Beekeeper’), Laura Morante (‘Man on Fire’), Danny Huston (‘Wonder Woman’), and Sabrina Impacciatore (‘The Passion of the Christ’).

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with Liev Schreiber about his work on ‘Across the River and into the Trees’, the work of Ernest Hemingway, his character, working with director Paula Ortiz, filming during the pandemic, reuniting with his ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’ co-star Danny Huston, and why Schreiber did not reprise his role of Sabretooth in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’.

Moviefone: To begin with, how familiar were you with the work of Ernest Hemingway before making ‘Across the River and into the Trees’?

Liev Schreiber: I had only read the basic high school Hemingway, which was, I had read ‘A Farewell to Arms’ and I’d read ‘For Whom the Bell Tolls’. I really didn’t have much experience with him. When Paula initially reached out to me about the film, she told me about a novel by a guy named Andrea di Robilant called ‘Autumn in Venice’, which is a wonderful telling of Hemingway’s time in Venice, which is a place that as many people know, he really loved. Especially his relationship to a young Countess, Adriana Ivancich. I knew that Paula wanted Ernest Hemingway to be present in this film and I followed. So, we grew my beard a little longer, and I spent a tremendous amount of time in Venice. There’s a lot of films about older men and younger women obviously, but one of the things that I appreciated about Hemingway was his self-consciousness about it and his self-loathing, or self-consciousness that verges on self-loathing. I think that that is a very refreshing and interesting take on it. He was impossibly spellbound by Adriana, the real woman, and at the same time hated himself for it and was very frustrated and then did absolutely nothing to hide it. So, a very complicated man, and I think in ‘Across the River’, he paints the portrait that perhaps he wants us to see, or that he wanted Adriana to see because he ultimately did write it for her, I believe.

MF: Did you relate personally to your character and what was your approach to playing Colonel Cantwell?

LS: I don’t often take things because I think I can knock them out of the park. I wish that there were things that I read that I thought I could knock out of the park. This was something that I was interested in perhaps because I was thinking about it and I was feeling it, which was mortality. We had just gone through the pandemic, my father was terminally ill, and I am getting on in years myself. Mortality in all its incarnations and the vulnerability that it elicits and the uncomfortable feelings, and it was just something that I thought was worth exploring and would be compelling for me as a role.

Can you talk about collaborating on set with director Paula Ortiz?

MF: Well, initially I was just so surprised that this feminist auteur director wanted to take on Hemingway. When I watched her other films, I thought, okay, this is someone who was really in touch with that. Everyone always talks about the simplicity of Hemingway, the masculinity of the writing, the spareness of it. But to be honest with you, that’s not what I thought when I read Hemingway in high school, and it’s certainly not what I thought when I read ‘Across the River’. I get that grammatically, in terms of styles of writing, I think he’s a romantic. I think that there are aspects of him, and I think that the masculinity that he wanted to convey to the world was a bit of a costume. For a child whose mother dressed him in girl’s clothes and things like that, he seemed awfully obsessed with doing masculine things. I think that Paula captures that. That there is this bravado, there is this lurch towards something that feels appropriate or that how one should act. One should join the military, one should serve one’s country, one should lead bravely, one should sacrifice one’s life, one should do all these things, but what one feels is oftentimes entirely different and at odds with what one should do. I think both Hemingway and Paula had a good handle on that concept.

MF: Can you talk about shooting in St. Mark’s Square in Venice during the pandemic? What was that like?

LS: It was extraordinary. I mean, imagine that city with no one in it. It had been returned to the Venetians, and they were in heaven. It’s probably why they’ve outlawed cruise ships because they’re still desperate for a bit of that. To be walking down those streets and beside those canals by yourself in the middle of the night, and to see the history and to feel the ghosts and the shadows of that extraordinarily beautiful city and culture, and because of the pandemic and what everyone was going through, we were there for quite some time and it was probably the best year of my life.

Danny Huston in 'Across the River and into the Trees'. Photo: Tribune Pictures.
Danny Huston in ‘Across the River and into the Trees’. Photo: Tribune Pictures.

MF: What was it like reuniting on screen with your ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’ co-star Danny Huston?

LS: Yeah, Danny and I are dear friends, and he was kind enough to help us out by coming to Venice to do this role. So yes, it was lovely to be with Danny again.

MF: Finally, was there ever any talk about you reprising your Sabretooth role in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’?

LS: No, there wasn’t. But I mean, I suppose that’s a conversation for Ryan. I think that they had it in their story that it would be Tyler Mane and that version of Sabretooth, which was a very different version of Sabretooth than mine, so I understand completely.

What is the plot of ‘Across the River and into the Trees’?

United States Army Colonel Richard Cantwell (Liev Schreiber) confronts the news of his terminal illness with stoic indifference and enlists a military driver for presumably his final hunting trip and a visit to Venice. Along the way, Cantwell investigates an alleged war crime and has a chance encounter with a young woman from the Italian nobility.

    Preview:

    • Ryan Reynolds released a deleted scene from ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’
    • The moment hints at Channing Tatum’s Gambit escaping the Void.
    • Tatum has been vocal about his desire to keep playing the character.

Once upon a time, Channing Tatum was going to be Gambit.

That time was 2014, and the actor was signed on to star in and produce a movie about the card-slinging, Cajun-accented X-Men character who had previously been brought to screen in animated form and by Taylor Kitsch in live-action for 20th Century Fox’s ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine.’

Of course, we all know what happened next… or rather, what didn’t happen. The ‘Gambit’ stand-alone lingered in development limbo as filmmakers came and went (Tatum, who later turned to directing, even offered to handle it himself if it would help), and by the time Disney bought Fox, the project was pretty much dead.

Until Deadpool. Yes, ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ one of the smash hits of the summer, the movie that has burned through multiple box office records (worldwide total at time of writing? $1.2 billion and counting) finally gave Tatum the chance to play Gambit on screen.

And now the movies’ star/producer/writer Ryan Reynolds has released some deleted footage to social media that offers a hopeful hint for Gambit’s future.

Quick spoiler alert for the four people who have yet to see ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’… near the end of the movie, it’s implied that Gambit, along with some other veteran characters, might have been swallowed by giant cloud creature Alioth.

But it appears that’s not the case for Gambit.

Taking to Instagram, Reynolds put up a snipped scene from the movie, which you can find below:

In the small moment, we see Gambit walking through the wreckage of Cassandra Nova’s (Emma Corrin) forces, and there is a distinct color behind him, which indicates the presence of a portal (or, as Reynolds puts it both on film and in his caption, a “Marvel Sparkle Circle.”)

What does that mean for Gambit? A potential escape from the Void where he was born.

What has Channing Tatum said about returning as Gambit?

In an interview with Variety, Tatum said this about his hopes for returning as the character:

“I would do lots of terrible things to make that happen. I wanted it for the last 10 years. It’s in Bob Iger and Kevin Feige’s hands. I pray to God. Write it into existence, friend.”

He also wrote more directly on social media himself, thanking Ryan Reynolds for the chance to actually play the role, however briefly:

“I thought I had lost Gambit forever. But Ryan fought for me and Gambit. I will owe him probably forever. Cause I’m not sure how I could ever do something that would be equal to what this has meant to me. I love ya buddy…I’m so grateful to be in this movie. It’s a masterpiece in my opinion. And just pure bad ass joy. I was literally screaming in the theater.”

Does this mean we’re getting a Gambit movie?

At the moment, our sad guess would hew closer to negative territory. Even given the popularity of the character and the reception for ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ overall, Marvel’s plans for the mutant characters have yet to be confirmed. So while we’d never say never, we’re also not holding our breath.
