    • British actor Vinnie Jones says he passed on returning as the Juggernaut in Marvel’s ‘Deadpool & Wolverine.’
    • Jones originated the role of the longtime X-Men nemesis in 2006’s ‘X-Men: The Last Stand.’
    • ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman as the title mutants, is expected to feature a slew of Marvel cameos.

British actor Vinnie Jones says he turned down the opportunity to reprise the role of Cain Marko, aka the Juggernaut, for the upcoming Marvel Studios film ‘Deadpool & Wolverine.’

Jones played the role in 2006’s ‘X-Men: The Last Stand,’ where the character – who was not originally a mutant in the comics – was refashioned as a physically powerful mutant who can build up enough momentum as he runs to literally crash through anything, including walls.

    Why Jones Won’t Return

With ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ expected to feature characters drawn from both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Fox’s now-defunct ‘X-Men’ film series, Jones told Yahoo! UK that he was offered the chance to return as Marko in the third ‘Deadpool’ film by director Shawn Levy.

“Funnily enough I just got asked to do ‘Deadpool,’ the new one now, and I spoke to the director and I just said it’s such a drama putting that suit on mentally and physically. I mean it had its mental toll as well because you’re in it and you can’t do anything all day, you can only drink through a straw. So we couldn’t strike the deal for ‘Deadpool [& Wolverine].’”

Jones added that the first ‘Deadpool’ is his “favorite movie of all f***ing time more or less, ” but that in the end the new movie “didn’t have the budget to put me in the suit.” (A wholly CG version of the Juggernaut made a brief appearance in 2019’s ‘Deadpool 2.’)

The actor also revealed that he wasn’t happy with the experience of filming the troubled, divisive ‘The Last Stand.’ After original director Matthew Vaughn was replaced by Brett Ratner, Jones claims that his role was drastically reduced in favor of other characters: “I was very upset, really, because it was … such a big stage and [I] became an extra, that’s what happened.”

Although the plot of ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ is being kept under wraps, as usual for Marvel, the film will follow the Merc with a Mouth (Ryan Reynolds) as he is captured by the Time Variance Authority and must journey through the multiverse to save the Marvel Cinematic Universe itself.

The movie will mark the first appearance of Deadpool and Wolverine under the MCU banner, with Hugh Jackman reprising the latter role for the first time since 2017’s ‘Logan.’

Some of the other characters appearing or rumored to appear in the new film include Sabretooth (played by Tyler Mane from the first ‘X-Men’ movie), Elektra (reprised by Jennifer Garner from the original ‘Daredevil’ as well as her own standalone effort), Tom Hiddleston’s Loki, Patrick Stewart’s Professor Xavier, and more.

‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ is out July 26th.

    • ‘Deadpool 3’ is officially wrapped shooting.
    • Ryan Reynolds marked the moment with a social media post.
    • The movie lands in theaters on July 26th.

Ryan Reynolds is not shy about document everything he’s working on (or promoting) via social media. So of course he would mark the occasion of ‘Deadpool 3’ wrapping filming.

Reynolds hit Instagram on Wednesday to thank director Shawn Levy, the cast and crew (while taking a typical pot shot at co-star and friend Hugh Jackman, who plays Wolverine in the movie) and posting a picture of, well Deadpool’s crotch. Which is fairly standard for the Merc with a Mouth.

    Here’s the post…

What’s the story of ‘Deadpool 3’?

Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool and Hugh Jackman as Wolverine in 'Deadpool 3.'
(L to R) Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool and Hugh Jackman as Wolverine in ‘Deadpool 3.’ Photo courtesy of Ryan Reynolds Instagram account.

The ‘Deadpool’ team have yet to release formal details of the third movie’s plot, but we do know it’ll see Jackman’s Wolverine meeting up with Reynolds’ Wade Wilson –– and that things will not necessarily go well, since the pair tend to fight when they interact in the comics.

We’re promised plenty of the usual meta madness inherent to Deadpool’s adventures. This time around, expect nods at the X-Men’s (and Wade’s) previous home at 20th Century Fox (before Disney’s purchase of it nabbed them the rights to the characters), and plenty of cameos from other people, including Jennifer Garner as Elektra.

Several of the cast from the first two ‘Deadpool’ movies are returning for this one, with Morena Baccarin, Brianna Hildebrand, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni and Rob Delaney all aboard, joined by new recruits Emma Corrin and Matthew McFadyen (whose characters are still a mystery, though Corrin is reportedly a villain).

What happened with ‘Deadpool 3’s production?

Following the exciting announcement that Jackman would reprise his Wolverine role for the movie, ‘Deadpool 3’ kicked off shooting in May, only for production to shut down in July when the actors’ strike began.

With Levy calling the shots, the film returned to production in November once the strikes were over. Filming had been roughly halfway finished when the shutdown occurred, so there was still a fair amount of work to be done.

‘Deadpool 3’ is the one big hope for the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2024 (at least on the big screen), as it’s the only full Marvel movie –– the Sony Spider-Man-associated titles such as ‘Madame Web’ and ‘Kraven the Hunter’ don’t really count –– to arrive this year.

When will ‘Deadpool 3’ be in theaters?

With Levy working quickly to complete post-production on the new footage (he started editing and effects work during the strikes), ‘Deadpool 3’ is targeting a July 26th release date.

Hugh Jackman will return as Wolverine in Marvel Studios' 'Deadpool 3.'

Based upon recently declassified files of the British War Department and inspired by true events, ‘The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare’ is an action-comedy that tells the story of the first-ever special forces organization formed during WWII by UK Prime Minister Winston Churchill and a small group of military officials including author Ian Fleming (Freddie Fox). The top-secret combat unit, composed of a motley crew of rogues and mavericks, goes on a daring mission against the Nazis using entirely unconventional and utterly “ungentlemanly” fighting techniques. Ultimately their audacious approach changed the course of the war and laid the foundation for the British SAS and modern Black Ops warfare.

    • Ryan Reynolds and Shawn Levy are developing an untitled heist movie.
    • ‘Cruella’ writer Dana Fox came up with the concept.
    • Netflix has nabbed the rights to the potential movie.

Looks like Ryan Reynolds and director Shawn Levy just can’t get enough of working together. Not content with collaborating on ‘Free Guy’, ‘The Adam Project’ and ‘Deadpool 3’ (which resumed filming last month), the pair has now picked up another new project.

Right now, Levy is aboard to direct and Reynolds to produce, but it’s a fair bet that if they end up happy with the script, the ‘Deadpool’ actor will end up starring.

What’s the new project that has Ryan Reynolds and Shawn Levy attached?

    Reynolds and Levy

The exact story details for this one are under wraps, but The Hollywood Reporter has learned that it’s a high-concept globally set caper flick a la ‘Ocean’s Eleven’. We’re sure it’ll open up opportunities for Reynolds to deploy his trademark wit and quips, but again, it’ll depend on the script as to whether he commits to star, even with Levy serving as director.

Dana Fox, who has written movies such as ‘Cruella’ and ‘The Lost City’, came up with the basic idea and has developed it with ‘X-Men’ veteran Simon Kinberg, who will also produce via his Genre Films company.

It’ll be a while before this one is ready to shoot, let alone find a release date, as Fox has yet to write the script.

And both Reynolds and Levy have busy schedules –– beyond the third ‘Deadpool’, Levy has to work on the final season of ‘Stranger Things’ and a variety of other potential shows/movies as both producer and director.

Reynolds, meanwhile, has a second ‘Red Notice’ movie, new action comedy ‘Calamity Hustle’ (which will co-star Channing Tatum and has been grabbed by Amazon Studios) and various other projects, including the next season of TV soccer doc ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ on his to do list.

Netflix –– which of course produced ‘The Adam Project’ and already has the aforementioned Reynolds-starring ‘Red Notice’ movies, was quick to snap this one up after a competitive bidding situation that included studios and other streamers.

It’s hardly surprising that the company wants to stay in business with Levy and Reynolds given that they’ve both worked on plenty of projects there. But it’ll certainly have to be patient waiting for this new one.

‘Deadpool 3’, meanwhile, is currently on track to hit theaters on July 26th. Before that, we’ll see Reynolds in John Krasinski’s live-action/CG family fantasy comedy ‘IF’, which is out on May 17th and has a trailer online.

The ‘Deadpool’ team have yet to release formal details of the third movie’s plot, but we do know it’ll see Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine meeting up with Reynolds’ Wade Wilson –– and that things will not necessarily go well, since the pair tend to fight when they interact in the comics.

We’re promised plenty of the usual meta madness inherent to Deadpool’s adventures. This time around, expect prods at the X-Men’s (and Wade’s) previous home at 20th Century Fox (before Disney’s purchase of it nabbed them the rights to the characters), and plenty of cameos from other people, including Jennifer Garner as Elektra.

Several of the cast from the first two ‘Deadpool’ movies are returning for this one, with Morena Baccarin, Brianna Hildebrand, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni and Rob Delaney all aboard, joined by new recruits Emma Corrin and Matthew McFadyen (whose characters are still a mystery, though Corrin is reportedly a villain.

And Shawn Levy, who has worked with Reynolds on the likes of ‘The Adam Project’ and ‘Free Guy’ (and let’s not forget, Jackman on ‘Real Steel’) is in the director’s chair.

    Who is Dogpool?

    Dogpool in 'Deadpool 3.'
Dogpool in ‘Deadpool 3.’ Photo: Dogpool Instagram.

For those who might not be up on the sprawling history of Deadpool in the comics, the idea was introduced in a storyline where Deadpool traveled to Earth-103173, a parallel reality in which scientists conducted Weapon X-level experiments on a dog named Wilson, transforming him into Dogpool. The canine hero would become a member of the Deadpool Corps., a team of alternate-reality Deadpools.

Think the likes of Alligator Loki in the Disney+ series named for Tom Hiddleston’s God of Mischief. Marvel has been using the Multiverse a lot in its current run of movies and TV series, so naturally this is something they could explore with Deadpool.

When will ‘Deadpool 3’ arrive in theaters?

‘The Marvels’, directed by ‘Candyman’s Nia DaCosta, picks up the story of Carol Danvers, AKA Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) as she’s forced to face the consequences of her actions destroying the Supreme Intelligence of the Kree race.

A vengeful Kree leader, Dar-Benn (Zawe Ashton) has discovered a powerful weapon in her crusade to strike back against both Carol and the Kree’s ancient rivals, the Skrulls.

And the use of the weapon, plus some malfunctioning space transport portals is also affecting the powers of Carol, Monica Rambeau (who knew her as a child and who we met as an adult in ‘WandaVision’, played by Teyonah Parris) and Kamala Khan , AKA Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani), causing them to trade places whenever they employ their abilities.

The result is a chaotic chase through space to stop Dar-Benn’s plan to wreak havoc on the Skrulls and humanity, one that also ropes in both Kamala’s family and Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson).

Critics are already pointing to a slightly confusing storyline, a need to have some knowledge of previous Marvels shows and movies to understand all the characters’ motivations (a common complaint with the MCU’s output) and a general feeling of superhero fatigue –– which has affected fellow superhero studio DC and others in the genre of late.

There’s also a disappointing notion that despite the movie being a fun, funny adventure, some sections of the audience were turned off by a film in the genre directed by a woman and starring three women.

Finally, the SAG-AFTRA strike meant that the stars couldn’t promote the movie until the night of release, all of which didn’t help its fate.

A bad box office result is by no means the end of the MCU –– after all, Marvel titles have had issues before (the likes of the ‘Ant-Man’ series, for one have rarely big giant cinematic hits). But it will almost certainly mean a reconsideration of strategy and ideas moving forward, as has been seen with the company’s small screen output.

There is no doubt that Disney and Marvel will be pinning their hopes on ‘Deadpool 3’ (which will mark the full formal entry of Ryan Reynolds’ chatty character into the MCU) next year to deliver, and 2025 is now bringing ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ and ‘Thunderbolts’.

Yet it’s certainly not a good time for the box office behemoth.

What’s the story of ‘Deadpool 3’?

Several of the cast from the first two ‘Deadpool’ movies are returning for this one, with Morena Baccarin, Brianna Hildebrand, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni and Rob Delaney all aboard, joined by new recruits Emma Corrin and Matthew McFadyen (whose characters are still a mystery, though Corrin is reportedly a villain.)

    Who is Dogpool?

Reynolds, who is once more allowed to promote the movie since the strike has been called off, hit twitter today to reveal that the comics character known as “Dogpool” will be showing up in the movie (assuming he’s not joking, but it doesn’t seem that way).

The rapid start looks to be somewhat in vain, though, at least in terms of getting the movie ready for its planned May 3, 2024 opening. According to Variety, the movie is now shifting to July 26th of that year (so still summer at least).

‘Deadpool 3’ is inheriting that July date from ‘Captain America: Brave New World’, which though it was thought to be closer to finished, is now moving to February 14, 2025. We’d assume that is to allow the Marvel team to maintain their hefty MCU chronology.

The changes mean ‘Thunderbolts’, which hadn’t yet kicked off filming when the strikes hit, is shifting from December 2024 to July 25th, 2025. And the troubled ‘Blade’ will now hit screens on November 7th, 2025.

  • SAG-AFTRA Makes Deal to End Actors’ Strike

    • SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP have reached a tentative labor deal.
    • The actors strike, which has lasted 118 days, will end at 12:01am Thursday.
    • The deal comes more than a month after SAG-AFTRA’s sister guild the Writers Guild of America solidified a new contract with studios and ended its own strike.

Looks like Hot Strike Summer is finally, actually coming to an end. Following the Writers Guild making a deal for a new contract to end its own industrial action, performers guild SAG-AFTRA (the combo of Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists) has announced to members that it has secured a new deal.

It’s good news for so many in the entertainment community, since it means TV shows and movies can now start shooting again –– assuming the deal goes through.

What’s the latest on the end of the strike?

SAG-AFTRA members walk the line in Northhampton on 9/21.

The SAG-AFTRA TV/Theatrical Committee approved the agreement in a unanimous vote on Wednesday, SAG-AFTRA announced. The strike will end at 12:01 am Thursday. On Friday, the deal will go to the union’s national board on Friday for approval.

The performers’ union announced the provisional agreement on Wednesday, after about two weeks of renewed negotiations. The development on Wednesday came not long before a deadline of 5pm that the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers had set for the union to give their answer on whether they had a deal.

At the weekend, the AMPTP announced it was making its “last and final offer” to the guild, a statement that was widely mocked by actors on social media, and it was revealed that the two sides were still some distance apart on provisions such as protection against the use of AI to copy performers’ images.

What does this mean for actors?

While the board and the membership still have to ratify the new agreement, it effectively means a new three-year contact with a host of changes to how revenue is shared and other protections for performers.

SAG-AFTRA has yet to reveal explicit details of the new contract.

Between the writers’ new contract and this agreement to end the actors’ strike, it means that Hollywood can officially start production on movies and TV shows within a few weeks, or potentially, a few days.

Of course, given the delays from the twin strikes, there will be a scramble for available talent and studio space, particularly on the movie front, meaning that some productions will still be delayed.

We can expect a period of frenzied activity now, but with the incoming holiday period, the various studios and TV networks will once more be quiet as workers take time off.

The companies had already been putting plans in place to shift release dates and TV series launches, and we’d expect most of those changes to stick if there isn’t time to get productions moving again quickly again.

All told, the Hollywood strikes have cost the Southern California economy an estimated $6.5 billion and 45,000 entertainment industry jobs after the WGA hit the picket lines in May, followed by SAG-AFTRA in July.

    • Marvel is reportedly considering a return for some beloved Avengers stars.
    • Jonathan Majors’ ongoing legal problems are proving a headache.
    • The studio has faced issues with newer movies such as ‘Blade’ and others.

There was a time when Marvel was on top of the Hollywood tree –– its movies were almost always guaranteed hits, people were loving the interconnected storylines and there was hope that the Marvel Cinematic Universe could stretch its Hydra-like tentacles into the world of streaming, providing a wealth of content for Disney+.

These days, there is more trouble than an assault from Doctor Doom (who we’ll have to wait to see on screen). Recent releases aside from ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ have failed to set the box office alight and there have been quality concerns about visual effects on screens big and small, a key element of making the stories work.

So, how does it plan to try and right the ship? According to a new report from Variety, the studio could look to its past to help its future.

Could the original Avengers actors return?

Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, and Robert Downey Jr. in 'The Avengers.'
(L to R) Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, and Robert Downey Jr. in ‘The Avengers.’ Photo: Courtesy of Marvel Studios.

While this is far from a concrete possibility, the Variety story cites sources saying there have been discussions about bringing back the likes of Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson to reprise their roles as fan-favorite Avengers characters.

Of course, all that would depend on whether the actors would even want to return at this point, and perhaps more crucially, the realization that the budget to pay the salaries of the likes of RDJ would require breaking several piggy banks.

Still, the idea of the Avengers as a selling point would help assuage issues with someone who was planned to be the big bad of future team-up films. ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty’ and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’.

    The Jonathan Majors issue

Yes, one of the biggest problems currently facing Marvel is Jonathan Majors, who appeared as different variations of the multiversal character Kang in ‘Loki’ Season 1 (he’s back as another version for Season 2) and ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’.

But Majors is embroiled in a huge domestic violence legal case with a trial set for later this month. And that is a giant headache for both Marvel and parent company Disney (which pulled the planned release of his Sundance movie ‘Magazine Dreams’ from the release slate amid all the legal worries).

The MCU team has yet to specify how it’ll address the issue going forward –– but it needs to figure it out quickly as the first of the new ‘Avengers’ movies was supposed to be shooting next year (though that could also be delayed thanks to the knock-on effect of the actors’ strike). There’s a chance the studio could recast the role or pivot to some other villain.

    ‘Blade’s blunted path to screens

    Marvel Studios' 'Blade.'
    Marvel Studios’ ‘Blade.’

Blade’ was supposed to be one title that got fans particularly excited. Marvel boss Kevin Feige announced Oscar winner Mahershala Ali as the new version of the vampire-battling vigilante once portrayed by Wesley Snipes.

Yet that has faced its own issues – two directors so far, several writers, innumerable drafts of the script (including, reportedly, one where Blade was the fourth lead in his own movie) and a shutdown six weeks before shooting was to begin.

Michael Green, who wrote ‘Logan’, is the latest writer aboard and the aim is to shoot the movie on a cheaper budget next year.

There are, at least, some positives if the Marvel team can get the right –– the Fox deal gave Disney the rights to the Fantastic Four and X-Men, and Feige and co. have been figuring out how to introduce two of the most famous comic book teams into the MCU.

Deadpool 3’, which was halfway through shooting when the actors’ strike shut it down, is certainly seeing some excitement, and that’s a potential way to bridge to the future.

And no one should write off the Marvel team completely –– they’ve shown a remarkable ability to bounce back and come up with hits.

  • ‘All the Light We Cannot See’ – Shawn Levy and Steven Knight

    QEpYq6nc

Premiering on Netflix November 2nd is the four-part series ‘’All the Light We Cannot See,’ which is based on author Anthony Doerr’s novel of the same name. The series was developed and written by Steven Knight (‘Spencer’) and directed by Shawn Levy (‘Free Guy,’ ‘Deadpool 3’).

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with director Shawn Levy and writer Steven Knight about their work on ‘’All the Light We Cannot See,’ visually adapting the source material, the themes they wanted to explore, the show’s unusual structure, and casting actress Aria Mia Loberti.

You can read the full interview below or click on the video player above to watch our interview.

Moviefone: To begin with, Shawn, can you talk about the challenges of adapting this source material visually to the screen, as well as the themes that you were excited to explore with the series?

Shawn Levy: Well, the good news is that the hardest part of the adaptation was Steven’s job, so I was spared that. I try to listen to what the script is telling me it wants to be, which is why ‘Free Guy’ looks different from ‘Stranger Things’ and ‘The Adam Project,’ and in this case, the source material, both the book and Steven’s adaptation, it was such a combination of historic, epic visuals, but with almost lyrical intimacy. I saw an opportunity to make something that doesn’t look like anything I’ve made before, but that also said something thematically that I believe in, which is, in spite of the many ways the world can break our heart, particularly in wartime, and the cruelty that people can do, that there is the critical importance of believing in the light we can’t see at a certain moment. History just recurrently teaches us this again and again, and times are dark once again, and it’s so hard, but also so important to hold on to your humanity, to your empathy, and to your ability to connect with someone else, regardless of the uniform they wear or the side of the world or conflict that they’re on.

MF: The series follows two different stories and features a lot of flashbacks. Steven, can you talk about the structure of the series and the challenges of adapting the source material?

Steven Knight: The biggest challenge of adapting the novel is the time shifts, because it’s sort of easier to do that on the page than it is on the screen. It took some sort of ingenuity to make sure that the audience don’t get lost in the time and fall between the cracks. I mean, that is a technical challenge, but I think that the real challenge of adapting something this good and this brilliant is to be able to confidently say that you know the characters well enough to have them do things they don’t do in the book. Setting the characters free can only happen if you are sure, you know who they are, and what they would do in those circumstances. For me, that was the biggest challenge, as well as daring to adapt something this well-loved and this well-celebrated. But I think in the end you have to do that; otherwise only mediocre novels would ever get adapted.

MF: Finally, Shawn, can you talk about discovering actress Aria Mia Loberti and why she was perfect to play the lead role of Marie-Laure LeBlanc?

SL: I felt going in that if I could find someone to play Marie who was herself low-vision or blind, that it wouldn’t just be the right way to approach it, it would be the better way to approach it, because it would be the authentic way to tell this story. So, we put out an open casting call and got well over a thousand auditions. One of them was from this graduate student, Fulbright scholar, young woman, who had never acted or even auditioned before, but she had such a presence on screen. She had an intelligence and a fire in her that felt like a hero and felt like it could bring this hero to life.

‘All the Light We Cannot See follows’ the lives of two teenagers during the height of World War II: Marie-Laure (Aria Mia Loberti), a blind French girl and Werner Pfennig (Louis Hofmann), a German boy forced to join and fight for the Nazi Regime.
