  • Martin Scorsese Calls Comic Book Movies “Manufactured Content”

Director Martin Scorsese at the Academy Awards.

Martin Scorsese, with his long, successful career, many superb movies and avowed advocacy for both classic and modern cinema, has earned the right to his opinion about the medium.

And he has been vocal in the past about his issues with the movie industry’s focus on superheroes and their associated genre, with billions spent on films from the likes of Marvel and DC at the expense of other output.

Now, sitting down with GQ in advance of his next release, ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’, he’s back on the subject, voicing his concerns about young audiences being indoctrinated into thinking that costumed heroes are the only game in town.

Here’s what the iconic filmmaker had to say about comic book and other movies:

“The danger there is what it’s doing to our culture. Because there are going to be generations now that think movies are only those —that’s what movies are. I do think that the manufactured content isn’t really cinema.”

And this was his concern about the content, not the people creating it:

“What I mean is that it’s manufactured content. It’s almost like AI making a film. And that doesn’t mean that you don’t have incredible directors and special effects people doing beautiful artwork. But what does it mean? What do these films, what will it give you? Aside from a kind of consummation of something and then eliminating it from your mind, your whole body, you know? So, what is it giving you?”

According to the director, the response is to have filmmakers who make other types of movies “fight back”:

“Which means that we have to then fight back stronger. And it’s got to come from the grassroots level. It’s gotta come from the filmmakers themselves. And you’ll have, you know, the Safdie brothers, and you’ll have Chris Nolan, you know what I mean? And hit ’em from all sides. Hit ’em from all sides, and don’t give up. Let’s see what you got. Go out there and do it. Go reinvent. Don’t complain about it. But it’s true because we’ve got to save cinema.”

While we’re in complete agreement that cinema needs a boost, particularly in the wake of the pandemic and the strikes, and the fact that many of the studios have poured their resources into the superhero genre (because, partly thanks to Marvel, it has been hugely successful, generating billions of dollars at the box office and beyond), it’s perhaps not as simple as that.

Saying that audiences will begin to think that superhero movies are all that is out there doesn’t match up with history –– after all, there was a time when gangsters were dominating cinema. And musicals. And for years, Westerns were massive, but rarely produced these days (they’ve moved to TV with the likes of ‘Yellowstone’).

The age of the superhero will pass too –– we’ve already seen signs that the genre is not as popular as it once was, on screens big and small.

And while Scorsese spotlights the likes of Christopher Nolan and the Safdie brothers, let’s not forget that Nolan directed three Batman movies (and produced others in the DC universe) and Benny Safdie has made acting appearances in the likes of the ‘Star Wars’ universe.

Also, though it’s totally true that younger audiences in particular shouldn’t go thinking that comic book movies, there is something to be said for them serving as gateways to other genres and cinematic focuses.

After all, haven’t the likes of Scorsese contemporaries such as George Lucas commented on the genre outings that helped get them into moviemaking in the first case? No one wants to watch ‘Flash Gordon’ movies all the time, but they helped inspire some very popular directors.

Didn’t Scorsese himself first get into movies by watching genre material? Unless at age six he was watching long, Polish, black and white dramas set during medieval times.

Who is to say that a young person watching the likes of a Marvel, DC or other offering won’t go on to make a cinematic masterpiece, full of drama and consequence? Yes, they should also be watching work by the likes of Nolan, the Safdies, Greta Gerwig, Wes Anderson and Scorsese himself, but if their interest is sparked does it really matter where they get their start?

Finally, while there are many sub-par comic book and sci-fi efforts (as there are in any genre), it feels disingenuous to suggest that nothing from the genre can have an impact: witness the cultural effect of something like ‘Black Panther’ or the audacious scope of ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame’, both of which delivered giant emotional moments and represented the culmination of years of carefully crafted storylines with connected characters and movies.

Still, we will never disagree with the notion that Scorsese has a lot of value when it comes to talking about cinema in general.

The director’s latest film, ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’, stars Robert De Niro, Leonardo DiCaprio and Lily Gladstone.

Adapted from David Grann’s bestseller by Scorsese and Eric Roth and based on a true story, ‘Flower Moon’ is set in Oklahoma in the 1920s when oil brought a fortune to the Osage Nation, who became some of the richest people in the world overnight. The wealth immediately attracted white interlopers, who manipulated, extorted, and stole as much Osage money as they could before resorting to murder.

  • Dwayne Johnson on why ‘Black Adam’ is not Continuing

When Kevin Hart and Dwayne Johnson get together you can usually expect two things –– plenty of friendly insults between the two and some candid moments.

Such was the case when Johnson guested on Hart’s Peacock show ‘Hart to Heart’, in which he has invited various people on to talk about their careers, their ambitions and more.

And in between the various funny jabs at each other, there was a chance for Johnson to open up about his disappointment around the character of Black Adam at DC.

    cAKImAUxggIpR5ZyKNuIz5

    What happened with ‘Black Adam’?

The character, who was created for DC Comics as an antagonist for Shazam, has evolved since then on the page to become something of an antihero in his own right.

Cinematically, the plan had been for Adam to serve as a nemesis for Shazam (played on screen by Zachary Levi in two movies so far), but when Johnson became involved in 2014, he urged producers to take it in a different direction.

A movie based solely around Black Adam went into development but took years to come to fruition. And when it did, it arrived in a vortex of post-Covid box office issues and changing regimes at DC.

The movie opened to $67 million, the biggest launch for a Johnson solo movie (we’re not counting the ‘Fast & Furious’ movies he has appeared in) but couldn’t weather the current moviegoing climate and ended up topping out at $393.2 million worldwide –– a disappointment for a film that cost at least around $200 million to make, more to market and had been viewed as a franchise starter.

Johnson had intended to see the character build to a confrontation with Henry Cavill’s Superman, going to far as to have him cameo in a post-credits sting. But given the new broom approach taken by incoming DC Studios bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran, that isn’t in the cards right now.

Johnson posted about his disappointment on Twitter in December:

What did Dwayne Johnson say about ‘Black Adam’?

Dwayne Johnson stars as Black Adam in New Line Cinema’s action adventure 'Black Adam.'
Dwayne Johnson stars as Black Adam in New Line Cinema’s action adventure ‘Black Adam.’

Talking with Hart, Johnson mentioned the shift in studio leadership that had torpedoed ‘Adam’s’ future:

“‘Black Adam’ got caught in a vortex of new leadership. It was so many changes in leadership. Anytime you have a company, a publicly traded company, and you have all those changes in leadership, you have people coming in who, creatively and fiscally, are going to make decisions that you may not agree with. It was like new ownership coming in and buying an NFL team and going, ‘Not my coach, not my quarterback.’ It doesn’t matter how many times you won the Super Bowl or how many rings you got; you’re going with somebody else.”

And despite its seeming failure at the box office, the star defended the movie:

“That will always be one of the biggest mysteries. You have the biggest opening of your career. Sure, no China, which could’ve been maybe 100 or 200 million more dollars. You have a superhero, and you want to grow out the franchise. You bring back Superman and Henry Cavill, which the world went crazy. And we created a diverse superhero portfolio, where we have just men and women of color in ‘Black Adam.’”

  • Latest Trailer for ‘Black Adam’ Online

    sV04AKBE

With movie releases in a relatively quiet period following the end of summer, many are looking to Dwayne Johnson and ‘Black Adam’ for the next big shot of moviegoing business.

The Rock is headed back to our screens with his first DC movie, which will see him playing the titular vengeful anti-hero whose approach to justice butts heads with the more straightforward likes of Superman.

And, as with all things Dwayne Johnson, expect something on a big scale, as the new trailer suggests.

Created by Otto Binder and C. C. Beck, the character is one of the archenemies of Shazam (as played in his own movies by Zachary Levi) and the nemesis of the Shazam Family. Black Adam first appeared as a one-time villain for the first issue of Fawcett Comics’ ‘The Marvel Family’ comic book December 1945 (a reminder here that Shazam was once known as Captain Marvel, before Marvel had Carol Danvers out there).

Black Adam was revived as a recurring character after DC Comics first licensed and then acquired the Fawcett characters and began publishing Shazam Family stories under the title ‘Shazam!’ in the 1970s.

While Johnson was at one point going to play the character as a direct villain to Levi’s Shazam, that plan evolved to give him his own movie (not a bad idea when you have someone with the Rock’s audience appeal). And in keeping with how he’s evolved in the comics, the tone shifted more towards him being an antihero rather than a straight up bad guy.

Jaume Collet-Serra, who worked with Johnson on ‘Jungle Cruise’, is in the director’s chair here, while the script has seen drafts from Adam Sztykiel, Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani.

In the movie’s story, Johnson’s Teth Adam rose from being a slave, dying, being reborn a god and meting out his particular, powerful brand of justice in the society of Kahndaq 5,000 years ago. It didn’t end so well for him, after he’s betrayed and imprisoned.

But he returns to dispense some no-nonsense justice in the present day, something that will bring him into conflict with more straightforward heroes, including, in the film the Justice Society of America, including Hawkman (Aldis Hodge), Dr. Fate (Pierce Brosnan), Cyclone (Quintessa Swindell) and Atom Smasher (Noah Centineo). And yes, that’s Viola Davis popping up as Amanda Waller.

This latest look at the movie is full of action and shows Johnson going for a grittier, more serious performance than his usual charm-filled work of late.

And yes, the JSA are certainly concerned about Adam’s power and behavior, looking to lock down the near godlike warrior. And they’ve plenty of tools to try to make that happen (including a jet taking off from an underground facility beneath a mansion that ‘X-Men’ fans will find very familiar, but does come from the JSA comics.

After a couple of release date shifts, ‘Black Adam’ is ready to rock into theaters on October 21st.

  • ‘Batgirl’: See an Image From the Canceled Superhero Movie

Ever since Warner Bros. Discovery confirmed it was locking DC movie ‘Batgirl’ away in a vault, seemingly for all time, its creators – and everyone who was anticipating the Leslie Grace-starring superhero title – have been going through an altered version of the stages of grief.

Directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, who had been in post-production on the movie when they learned that it was being turned into a tax write-off instead of heading to its planned destination of HBO Max, were quick to issue a statement expressing their disbelief at the move.

Batgirl herself, Leslie Grace, added her own statement, via Twitter.

Now today, El Arbi has gone one step further in an Instagram story, offering up a look at the movie, which may well end up being the only proper look we have at the movie.

The picture is particularly galling, as it shows Grace in costume standing on set with El Arbi and, most excitingly, Michael Keaton in his Batman suit.

On a more positive note, though, he also shared some of the messages of support that have come through, particularly from directors James Gunn and Edgar Wright.

The story also shows a message from Kevin Feige, for whom the duo directed several episodes of ‘Ms. Marvel’.

Directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah from Disney+’s ‘Ms. Marvel.’
Directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah from Disney+’s ‘Ms. Marvel.’

“My friends, I had to reach and let you know we are all thinking about you both,” Feige wrote in an email to Arbi and Fallah. “Because of the wonderful news about the wedding (congrats!) and the disappointing news about ‘Batgirl.’ Very proud of you guys and all the amazing work you do and particularly ‘Ms. Marvel’ of course! Can’t wait to see what is next for you. Hope to see you soon.”

In related ‘Batgirl’ news, the decision has also impacted those who make decisions about DC movies at Warner Bros. Discovery. Walter Hamada, the DC Films president, was reportedly told about the decision to shelve the movie while attending a test screening of another title, ‘Black Adam’.

The decision dismayed him to such a degree that The Hollywood Reporter has heard that Hamada is considering getting out of his contract – though he has now decided to stay at least through ‘Black Adam’s release on October 21st.

Yet chances are he’ll be leaving anyway given the new broom approach that freshly arrived company CEO David Zaslav is taking to DC, looking to find a Feige-style figure to guide the movies going forward.

And following the shareholder earnings call yesterday (which was more eagerly watched than many previous examples), Zaslav repeated his commitment to future DC movies including ‘Adam’, ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ and, yes, ‘The Flash’ even given more problematic news stories about star Ezra Miller’s behavior.

This is one that feels like it’ll just keep rolling. But for now, the most we can hope for on the ‘Batgirl’ front is that enough stills will be released that those who were excited about the movie can create a flipbook…

  • Warner Bros. Discovery to Shelve Leslie Grace’s ‘Batgirl’

    Leslie Grace as Batgirl
Leslie Grace in Warner Bros. Discovery’s ‘Batgirl.’

    Call it a Bat Cave-in.

In a surprising development, Warner Bros. Discovery and DC have apparently decided to shelve the ‘Batgirl’ movie, which was going through the post-production process and had been targeting a theatrical release or an HBO Max debut (depending on which report you read).

Now though, the movie, which had a reported budget that began in the $70 million range and ballooned to $90 million because of Covid protocols, is no longer going to be seen in any venue, not even a home entertainment release. There had been stories of disappointing test screenings and complaints about the lack of spectacle in the movie.

Which means that Warners – fresh off its acquisition by Discovery – is willing to cut its losses and abandon the film. It’s all part of a new strategy that will focus on the bigger budget theatrical DC Extended Universe movies. ““This is the end of DC as a hobby,” a source told the New York Post, which originally broke the story.

Directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah from Disney+’s ‘Ms. Marvel.’
Directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah from Disney+’s ‘Ms. Marvel.’

Bad Boys for Life’ and ‘Ms. Marvel’ directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah had been overseeing the new movie, which stars ‘In the Heights’ actress Leslie Grace starring as Barbara Gordon. The exact plot of the film hadn’t been released, but it’ll effectively follow Gordon (the daughter of J.K. Simmons’ Commissioner Jim Gordon) donning her version of a Bat-suit to fight crime in Gotham City.

In addition to Grace and Simmons, the movie stars Brendan Fraser as the villainous Firefly and Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne/Batman.

It’s a confusing move since the company had been trying to put more of a plan in place for its DC output. There remain concerns over ‘The Flash’, given the negative press around star Ezra Miller’s unorthodox behavior and run-ins with the law off screen.

And the issue of who is the official Batman remains up the air too – Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne from ‘The Batman’ exists outside of the DCEU, while Ben Affleck had repeatedly said he’s ready to hang up the cowl yet will appear in both ‘The Flash’ and (as Bruce Wayne even if he doesn’t suit up) in ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’, as revealed – accidentally – by a studio backlot tour stopping by where Jason Momoa was working on additional footage for the superhero sequel.

Then there are the other DC movies. While ‘Blue Beetle’ appears to still be on track (for now, and it has the relative security of being firmly aimed at a theatrical release), a third ‘Wonder Woman’ remains in limbo.

The studio still has ‘Black Adam’ due in theaters on October 21st, ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ out on December 21st, then ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ March 17th and (assuming it sticks), ‘The Flash’ on June 23rd.

There were warning signs about ‘Batgirl’ last month when Warners/DC said nothing about the movie in its big Comic-Con presentation. But we’re not sure anybody had “completely shelved” on their bingo cards.

  • Todd Phillips Offers ‘Joker’ Sequel Update

Joaquin Phoenix in Todd Phillips' 'Joker.'
Joaquin Phoenix in Todd Phillips’ ‘Joker.’

It has been a few months since we heard anything new about the ‘Joker’ sequel that co-writer/director Todd Phillips has been busy scripting.

But from the looks of Phillips’ latest Instagram post, things are moving smoothly along, with the script reaching its latest draft and, according to the other image on the post, star Joaquin Phoenix reading it.

There’s also that title: ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ which in case your high school French isn’t up to the task, translates to the term for a mental disorder that affects more than one person.

No story details were offered up, but that highbrow title could refer to the pervasive influence of Arthur Fleck’s (Phoenix) actions in the first film. His brand of chaos certainly appeared to be spreading in Gotham. Phillips’ film was a dark, gritty, take on the Clown Prince of Crime, much more in the mood of a Martin Scorsese crime film than you usual superhero outing. It told the story of Fleck, a man struggling to find his way in Gotham’s fractured society.

A clown-for-hire by day, he aspires to be a stand-up comic at night… But finds the joke always seems to be on him. Caught in a cyclical existence between apathy and cruelty, Arthur makes one bad decision that brings about a chain reaction of escalating events.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/CehX0rGPxQi/

According to Deadline, Phoenix liked what he saw enough to kick off negotiations to return as Fleck, as while he had a sequel clause in his contract for the original, he has enough clout that Warners will need to stump up a hefty pay rise to make sure he returns for sure.

News of further developments will be good news for Warner Bros. Discovery and DC, which saw the first ‘Joker’ go on to gross more than $1 billion at the box office and pick up 11 Oscar nominations, winning two – for Phoenix as Best Actor and Original Score for composer Hildur Guðnadóttir.

Phillips has dropped hints of his working on a sequel in the past, and as recently as this January mentioned he and co-writer Scott Silver delivering earlier screenplay drafts to the studio.

Naturally, the companies would like a follow-up now that Phillips has the story he wants to tell. From the looks of this, we could see the movie start filming this year.

And Phillips’ involvement with the DC Movies structure as a whole could be changing since incoming Warner Bros. Discovery boss David Zaslav has apparently asked him to consider serving as an advisor for the DC movie universe going forward. Unlike Kevin Feige, who runs Marvel Studios for Disney, overseeing their movies and TV shows, Phillips would strictly work on a non-executive level.

Also, unlike Feige, Phillips doesn’t have an encyclopedic knowledge of the comic books, so if he does take the job, chances are he might be paired with someone boasting that sort of experience, while he’ll handle filmmaking choices. Whether that comes about, of course, remains to be seen, though for now he’ll be focused on figuring out this one movie.

  • Taika Waititi May Join James Gunn’s ‘Suicide Squad’: Report

Taika Waititi May Join James Gunn’s ‘Suicide Squad’: Report

    Marvel Studios

Just when you think Taika Waititi has done it all, the eccentric “Thor: Ragnarok” and “Jojo Rabbit” filmmaker surprises us yet again: He’s reportedly in talks to play a role in James Gunn‘s “The Suicide Squad.”

That’s the scoop from Deadline, which says that Waititi may be joining the already-stacked cast of the upcoming DC supervillain team-up flick. As with most comic book movie casting news, the trade reports that there’s “No word on what part, or how big” just yet.

Filmmakers are going to have to make a decision soon, since Deadline says that there’s reportedly going to be a table read for “The Suicide Squad” on September 11, and production is set to begin on September 23. Since Waititi is already prepping work on the upcoming “Thor: Love and Thunder,” we imagine he’s pretty busy, and thus probably only negotiating for a small roll in the flick.

Since both Gunn and Waititi got their start at DC rival Marvel, we’re not-so-secretly hoping that Waititi’s casting will have some sort of winking nod to their connection to the MCU. But multi-talented Waititi — who’s also an actor, writer, and producer in addition to director — can truly do anything, so whatever role he’s playing, we’ll be on board.

“The Suicide Squad” — a sequel-reboot of sorts — is bringing back 2016 “Suicide Squad” stars Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Viola Davis (Amanda Waller), Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang), and Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flag). New additions to the cast include Idris Elba, David Dastmalchian (Polka-Dot Man), Daniela Melchior (Ratcatcher), Flula Borg, Steve Agee (King Shark), and Nathan Fillion.

The feature is due in theaters on August 6, 2021.

  • ‘It’ Director Andy Muschietti May Helm DC’s ‘Flash’ Movie: Report

‘It’ Director Andy Muschietti May Helm DC’s ‘Flash’ Movie: Report

    Warner Bros.

After years in development limbo, DC’s long-gestating standalone “Flash” movie may finally have gotten the charge it so desperately needed.

According to a scoop from The Hollywood Reporter, Andy Muschietti — who helmed the massively popular “It” remake, and its upcoming sequel, “It: Chapter Two” — is currently in talks to take the director’s chair on the project. Muschietti would also produce, alongside his sister and producing partner, Barbara Muschietti.

Another big potential behind the scenes change is a new script, which sources tell THR will be written by Christina Hodson. Hodson already has experience spinning off franchises for Warner Bros., having previously penned “Bumblebee” and the upcoming “Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn).”

Despite those significant creative shifts, titular star Ezra Miller remains attached to this new version. Miller has been a staunch protector of “The Flash,” fighting to keep the flick in development by working on a new version of the script himself, alongside comics veteran Grant Morrison. While his desired darker direction for the character was ultimately rejected by Warner Bros., they still want to keep him on board, according to THR.

The trade reports that deals have not yet been finalized, but Muschietti’s success with fellow Warner Bros. series “It” suggests that he may be the right fit for this feature. “Flash” fans should keep their fingers crossed.

  • ‘Swamp Thing’ Full Trailer Explores a Mysterious Virus

‘Swamp Thing’ Full Trailer Explores a Mysterious Virus

    Warner Bros.

Producer James Wan‘s fingerprints are all over the new full-length trailer for the DC Universe streaming service’s upcoming “Swamp Thing” series, with horror lurking around every dark, slimy corner in the creepy clip.

“Swamp Thing” follows CDC researcher Abby Arcane (Crystal Reed) as she descends on a small Louisiana town that’s been plagued by a deadly virus. The illness — which has the ability to tear people apart from the inside as they sprout twisting vines, among other disgusting symptoms — is linked back to the town’s mysterious swamp, which has been the site of some shady occurrences in recent years, including chemical dumping.

Many of the town’s residents seem convinced that there’s something evil emanating off — and ruminating in — those murky waters, which Abby herself begins to accept as the mysteries (not to mention gross, mangled bodies) continue to pile up.

“We’re dealing with something beyond the known scope of science,” she notes.

One townsperson, meanwhile, has a more bonkers (and yet, kind of correct?) summation.

“The swamp’s had enough!” he declares. “This is payback!”

Despite the silliness of that statement, this trailer makes the argument that Wan and co. have packed the series with enough genuinely creepy moments to keep the camp factor at bay. Fans can see for themselves when “Swamp Thing” premieres on DC Universe on May 31.

  • Did ‘Avengers: Endgame’ Rip Off Ending of ‘Batman v Superman’?

Did ‘Avengers: Endgame’ Rip Off Ending of ‘Batman v Superman’?

    Marvel

More shots are being fired in the war between Marvel and DC fans.

“Avengers: Endgame” isn’t just raking in money ($2.2 billion and counting), the Marvel Studios capstone also received rave reviews from critics and fans alike.

DC’s “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” similarly cleaned up at the box office, but was universally savaged. And yet, as Twitter user @daamiedwards pointed out, their endings share many visual and thematic similarities:

In the side-by-side images, a core trio from “Endgame” (Iron Man, Captain America, Thor) advance on Thanos, while the core trio from “BvS” (Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman) advance on Doomsday.

Then, both Superman and Tony Stark sacrifice themselves by using a weapon, after which their significant others (Lois Lane and Pepper Potts) give them a farewell kiss. And that’s followed by somber memorials for the two heroes.

This isn’t the only time someone’s noticed similarities between the movies. In a YouTube video, Film Gob openly wonders if “Endgame” directors Anthony and Joe Russo ripped off “BvS” director Zack Snyder.

Of course, these observations will drive an even further, tiresome wedge between Marvel and DC fans.
