    • Matthias Schoenaerts is joining Supergirl.
    • He’ll play the villain opposite Milly Alcock’s conflicted title character.
    • ‘Cruella’s Craig Gillespie is in the director’s chair.

While we’ve known for a while that ‘House of the Dragon’ actor Milly Alcock has snagged the role of Kara Zor-El, AKA Supergirl in ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,’ other news has been slower to arrive.

That changes today, as Deadline reports that Matthias Schoenaerts has scored the role of the villain in the new movie.

What is the plan for the ‘Supergirl’ movie?

Alcock will reportedly first show up in another DC movie (the main speculation has been on James Gunn’s ‘Superman’, though the director has shot that down online, even if it seems unlikely there will be another release from Warner Bros./DC between ‘Superman’ and ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.’)

She’ll then appear in her own movie, which was announced alongside the rest of Gunn and Safran’s plan for the first wave of their new movie/TV universe.

‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ will be a big-scale sci-fi film based on Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s comic run. It features a “darker, harsher” version of Kara Zor-El raised on a surviving chunk of Krypton who sees everyone around her die.

This is what Gunn said at the time of the announcement:

“This is a very different type of Supergirl. In our film, we see the difference between Superman, who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from, you know, the time he’s an infant, versus Supergirl, who was raised on a rock chip-off of Krypton and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl and is much more hardcore. She’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re used to seeing.”

Who will Schoenaerts play in ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’?

Matthias Schoenaerts in 'The Regime.' Photograph by Miya Mizuno/HBO.

Assuming the movie maintains the comic’s storyline, Schoenaerts will be playing Krem of the Yellow Hill, who kills a young alien girl’s father. She then draws Supergirl into the conflict.

And, more controversially, he also kills Supergirl’s dog, leading her to go all ‘John Wick.’

While the actor is more known for his indie movie and European work (including the likes of ‘Rust and Bone,’ ‘The Danish Girl’ and Luca Guadagnino’s ‘A Bigger Splash’), Schoenaerts is not a stranger to comic book-based movies, having appeared in Netflix’s ‘The Old Guard’ (he’s back for the sequel, which is still awaiting a release slot.)

Craig Gillespie is making the new movie. Gillespie brings a lot of experience to the table –– he’s directed several movies with female characters at their heart (including ‘I, Tonya’ and ‘Cruella’), and is also adept at balancing tone.

The cameras will be rolling this coming January in the UK.

Ana Nogueira has been adapting the comic book with some input from Tom King. DC Studios bosses Gunn and Peter Safran are producing, and DC executive vice president Chantal Nong is an executive producer.

Josh Brolin may not have agreed to the solemn duty of wearing and using the Green Lantern ring for the long-gestating DC Studios TV series for HBO based on the comic book property, but now we know who –– at least is in talks to do so –– as Deadline has learned that ‘Friday Night Lights’ veteran Kyle Chandler is in talks for the Hal Jordan role originally offered to Brolin.

What’s the story of ‘Green Lantern’ in comics form?

DC Comics’ Hal Jordan/Green Lantern. Photo courtesy of DC.com.

Created in its first incarnation (a Lantern named Alan Scott) in 1940 by Martin Nodell and Bill Finger, the concept of the ‘Green Lantern’ comics is that of a super-powered, police force, battling evil doers with rings that allow them to channel energy into different forms. There are many Lanterns, who patrol the known and unknown universe.

‘Green Lantern’s history on screen has been seriously mixed. Though different takes on the character have flourished in animated movies and series, their live-action counterparts have had less luck. Ryan Reynolds played the Hal Jordan version in a 2011 movie that didn’t triumph at the box office, and there have been fleeting glimpses on the small screen.

Even Zack Snyder didn’t manage to realize his chosen Lantern –– John Stewart –– in his mammoth Snyder Cut of ‘Justice League’. Despite shooting a cameo with Wayne T. Carr as Stewart, Warners asked him to remove the character because of the studio’s own plans. In the end, Snyder swapped in Martian Manhunter.

James Gunn has Nathan Fillion playing the Guy Gardner incarnation in his ‘Superman’ movie, which lands on July 11th next year.

And the show had been in development before Gunn and Safran made their big announcement. Back in 2020, ‘Pride and Prejudice and ZombiesSeth Grahame-Smith hopped aboard to write and run what HBO Max (as the streaming service was then called) was picturing its most expensive series to date, a space-set ‘Green Lantern’ drama whose focus would be the Alan Scott and Guy Gardner iterations of the character among the first and most popular versions.

‘Lanterns’ will follow the Hal Jordan and John Stewart characters, as new recruit Stewart and Lantern legend Jordan are described in the latest official synopsis as “two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.”

    Who is working on ‘Lanterns’?

Chris Mundy, whose resume includes stints on Netflix’s ‘Ozark’ and HBO’s ‘True Detective: Night Country’, is showrunner on the new series, working alongside ‘Watchmen’s Damon Lindelof and DC comics writer Tom King (whose ‘Supergirl’ comic is the basis for the new movie featuring the character).

And, according to Jeff Sneider, there have been talks for Lindelof’s ‘Watchmen’ collaborator, director Stephen Williams, to handle the first episode of the new series.

According to various sources, the likes of Matthew McConaughey, Chris Pine and Ewan McGregor were all on the radar for this one around the time that Brolin was being approached. But it would seem that the team has at least locked into one of its leads, with the John Stewart news still to come.

  • Exclusive News: Frank Grillo Talks ‘Superman’ and More

(L to R) Frank Grillo and director James Gunn on the set of ‘Peacemaker’ season 2. Photo: James Gunn’s Instagram account.

Last year Moviefone spoke exclusively to actor Frank Grillo (‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’), and he revealed that he would be working with director James Gunn on an upcoming DC universe project. We guessed that it might be ‘Superman’, but the actor denied it … for the most part.

It was later revealed officially that Grillo would be playing Rick Flag Sr. in the animated series ‘Creature Commandos’ and eventually other live-action DC projects. We’ve since learned that he will in fact also appear in ‘Peacemaker’ season 2 as Flag and wait for it … Grillo will appear in ‘Superman’ as well.

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of once again speaking exclusively with Frank Grillo about his new movie ‘Long Gone Heroes’, which is available in theaters, on digital and on demand September 20th, as well as ‘Hounds of War’, which will be available on VOD September 20th.

We also spoke to Grillo about shooting ‘Superman’, working with James Gunn, ‘Peacemaker’ season 2, working with John Cena, making ‘Creature Commandos’, and if Joel Kinnaman calls him dad now.

Here is what Grillo said about keeping his appearance in ‘Superman’ a secret:

“They are so trying to not let anything out prematurely, purely for the audience, purely for the fans. I’ve been terrible at it in the past and have almost been fired. I swore to them I would not, if I had to lie, I’ll lie. I hate to lie, but yeah, I just can’t say anything. I think it’s for the best. Because of the way (James) Gunn and Peter Safran have organized DC, whether it’s ‘Peacemaker’ and ‘Superman’, a lot of it is intertwined. So, if you talk about something, it could be a spoiler. So, you got to be diligent about not just saying too much, you know? By the way, that was my excuse with Marvel. I’m like, “I’m not lying.” They’re like, “Yeah, you are.” I’m like, “I don’t want to lie. It makes me feel bad.” They go, “We don’t care.’”

He also had this to say about working with James Gunn on ‘Superman’ and other projects:

“I mean, look, I’ve been on those sets, right? I’ve been on the steps. I’ve been in that world with all of them, with the biggest, right? Especially when I had the little bit in ‘Avengers’, every one of those guys was there. It was so amazing. But James Gunn is a different creature. He’s a different animal, right? He’s an artist who now took over a studio and he’s an active artist. I mean, what he’s written for ‘Creature Commandos’. It’s amazing. When I read his words for ‘Peacemaker’, I’m like, it’s perfect. He’s a creative master, and what they are doing between the business aspect and the creative aspect is mind-boggling to me. So, I think everyone’s going to be happy.”

Grillo confirmed that he will appear in ‘Peacemaker’ season 2 saying, “Oh, (I’m in) the whole thing. Yeah.”

He also had this to say about working with John Cena:

“There’s another guy. I would think, “Oh, Cena, a wrestler, kind of a thug.” But this guy reads a book every two days. He is the most gracious man I have ever met. Intelligent, funny, strong, but there’s no accidents. I always say there’s no accidents in success. John Cena is exactly where John Cena should be. The guy’s a freak. You know what he does on his spare time in the trailer? He plays the piano!”

The animated series will kick off DC’s ‘Chapter One: Gods and Monsters’ saga and is set to premiere on Max December 5th.

Grillo had this to say about the new series:

“I can’t say anything about it, but I’ve seen it. I’ve done it, and it’s funny, it’s heartbreaking, it’s raunchy and it’s like nothing I’ve ever seen. So, we’re going to go to (New York) Comic-Con with it in October to show a little bit of it. I’m so excited and I’m excited for James Gunn and Peter Safran, most of all. I really am.”

Finally, we asked Grillo if he’s met Joel Kinnaman who played Rick Flag Jr. in the ‘Suicide Squad’ movies, and if so, did Kinnaman call him dad?

“Yeah, Joel and I had to do a couple of things. I didn’t know Joel. We knew each other through mutual friends, but never really knew each other. That’s what I love about this business. Another spectacular guy, spectacular actor. I’m a big fan of his acting, but (he’s) just a great person. I love that guy. He’s a good man. I’m glad he is my son.”

With DC Studios bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran as executive producers (though not showrunners –– see who is below), the show received the go-ahead for eight initial episodes in a straight-to-series order.

And if current reports pan out, we may know one person who would be starring in the series, as a site called Nexus Point News has heard that Josh Brolin has been offered the role of Hal Jordan.

While reporter Jeff Sneider has also heard those rumblings, here’s where we point out that none of this is official yet and is currently still more rumor than fact.

Brolin, of course has had both good and bad experiences in the comic book genre –– ‘Jonah Hex’ didn’t turn out so well, but he saw big success playing Thanos for Marvel. But this could be an exciting new role for him.

    • James Gunn has marked the end of shooting for ‘Superman’.

    • The movie will be in theaters on 11th July next year.

Having shot in Norway, Cleveland and Atlanta, writer/director James Gunn and his ‘Superman’ cast and crew have now completed filming on the superhero movie that Gunn intends –– cinematically, at least –– to kick off his vision for the DC movie universe going forward.

With David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Gunn has been busy making the movie under great scrutiny, his concept for Superman seen as partly defining the way ahead for DC on screens big and small.

    OT00arSyAacXCGscjvNND4

Gunn hasn’t been shy about sharing behind the scenes looks at making the movie and we’ve seen the first look at Corenswet in costume.

Now, though, barring any planned additional footage shoots, Gunn is headed into the post-production stage ahead of the movie’s release next year. We can likely expect at least the first teaser before the year is out.

“And that’s a wrap,” Gunn posted on Instagram about wrapping. “God bless our cast and crew whose commitment, creativity, and hard work have brought this project to life.”

Little is truly known about the plotline at this point, but Gunn has been clear that he’s eschewing the usual exploding home planet Krypton/arrival in Smallville origin story (though those will likely be referenced) in favor of more of a workplace film with Clark showing up to work at the Planet, where Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan) will already be an established reporting star.

Peter Safran, Gunn’s co-chief of DC Studios (and a producer on the movie) said this about the new movie during the duo’s big announcement about DC films and series going forward:

“It focuses on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way. He is kindness in a world that thinks of kindness as old-fashioned.”

    Who is appearing in ‘Superman’?

Alongside Corenswet and Brosnahan, there’s an eclectic, sprawling cast.

Also in the cast? Nicholas Hoult (Lex Luthor), Skyler Gisondo (Jimmy Olsen), Nathan Fillion (Guy Gardener), Isabela Mercad (Hawkgirl), Anthony Carrigan (Metamorpho), Terence Rosemore (Otis), Edi Gathegi (Mister Terrific), Sara Sampaio (Eve Teschmacher) and María Gabriela de Faría (Angela Spica/The Engineer).

That’s the main ensemble; we can expect an appearance from Gunn’s brother Sean (a regular in his movies, who has played the likes of Kraglin and provided the on-set reference performance and voice for Rocket Raccoon in the ‘Guardians’ franchise) as the villainous Maxwell Lord.

  • Comic-Con 2024: ‘The Penguin’ Panel

    IKvqh5GK

    Preview:

    • ‘The Penguin’ had new footage to show at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con event.
    • Star Colin Farrell and executive producer/‘The Batman’ director Matt Reeves were among those attending (Farrell via video).
    • The show is a spin-off of 2022’s ‘The Batman’.

The Penguin’ might not have had the most promising start at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, making headlines after an immersive “activation” event based on a nightclub from the HBO series for press and the cast was evacuated on Friday night when a fire broke out. No one was hurt, but the big question, of course –– did anyone check to see whether a cowled individual was involved, and were they carrying a Bat Fire Kit?

Regardless, some of the creative team, including ‘The Batman’ director Matt Reeves (who is a producer on the show), actors Cristin Milioti, Rhenzy Feliz, showrunner Lauren LeFranc and producer and Dylan Clark –– plus star Colin Farrell, live via video link from Macau, showed up on Saturday afternoon at its panel in Hall H to talk up the show, which continues the story of Farrell’s criminal schemer Oz Cobb from ‘The Batman.’

What’s the story of ‘The Penguin’?

Colin Farrell as Oswald “Oz” Cobb in Max’s ‘The Penguin.’ Photo: Courtesy of Max.

The series, which has been described as in the style of classic crime drama ‘Scarface’, will pick up the story of Farrell’s character as he rises to power in Gotham City. Mild spoiler alert in case you’ve yet to see ‘The Batman’, but part of the movie’s plot involves Oz’s bosses either dying or heading to jail, leaving him a path to achieve his aims.

Yet given that there’s a whole series to fill with this story, we doubt the road will be an easy one. And there’s still that pesky Caped Crusader lurking around (even if Batman likely wouldn’t appear much if at all in the show).

Farrell’s character will face off against other notorious Gotham crime bosses, including Salvatore Moroni, played by Clancy Brown.

One of Carmine Falcone’s chief rivals, he’ll be back on the streets for the series and ready to make his move now that he’s no longer at the mercy of Falcone (who, again spoiler alert, died in ‘The Batman’).

The Cast also includes Milioti as Carmine’s daughter Sofia Falcone, with Shohreh Aghdashloo, Michael Kelly, Dierdre O’Connell, Michael Zegen, Feliz and Theo Rossi rounding out the main cast.

What did we learn from ‘The Penguin’ panel?

Cristin Milioti in Max's 'The Penguin.'
Cristin Milioti in Max’s ‘The Penguin.’ Photo: Courtesy of Max.

According to Reeves, Farrell’s Cobb was going to be a focus of the movie sequel to ‘The Batman’ (which the filmmaker is busy writing), but HBO bosses asked for a marquee character for the first spin-off show, and so the decision was made to use the series to bridge between the two movies and explore more about his rise to power.

Farrell reveals he was hesitant to take on the role for the first movie but was convinced by Reeves and especially delighted by the look of the character, keying in how to play the role and his background from the first sculpt he was shown.

For her part, showrunner LeFranc said her take on the character’s story was inspired by a corrupt mayor in Rhode Island, who was nevertheless hailed as a pillar of the community for the help he provided to people. She said there are no heroes in this series –– everyone is operating in shades of gray.

Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti in Max's 'The Penguin.'

And LeFranc also talked up the idea that Sofia Falcone in the show is very different from how she’s been portrayed previously in the comics, praising what Milioti brought to the role.

Reeves admitted that ‘The Godfather’s Fredo and Harvey Weinstein were among his inspirations for the character.

Feliz plays Victor Aguilar, a new character created for the show, and one designed to give us a fresh way into Oz’s story through his connection with the wannabe crime boss.

According to the team, Oz and Sophia Falcone mirror each other, but are on two sides of the series and Gotham’s fate is in the balance.

And if you were wondering whether Oz’s story is wrapped up in the limited series, Reeves confirmed that he will in fact be back on the big screen for ‘The Batman – Part II’, which kicks off filming next year ahead of its planned 2026 release.

The news for on-screen Batman –– and particularly The Penguin –– wasn’t limited to the ‘Penguin’ panel, as the presentation for animated series ‘Batman: Caped Crusader’ (also produced by Reeves, alongside Batman animation legend Bruce Timm) revealed that Minnie Driver is playing Oswalda Cobblepot, a female take on the character, who will sing in the show.

    • J. Michael Straczynski wrote the two-part adaptation.

Watchmen’ still stands as one of the most influential graphic novels of all time and has been a big challenge to adapt.

It doesn’t help that original co-creator Alan Moore (who crafted the book with artist Dave Gibbons) is no fan of anyone trying to convert his work into a new medium.

We can only imagine, then, that he’s busy conjuring a damning spell to thwart the latest effort, but he’s too late –– after being announced at last year’s Comic-Con, an animated, two-part movie called ‘Watchman: Chapter I’, based on the graphic novel is on the way (and has been in the works since at least 2021), with Matthew Rhys, Katee Sackhoff and Titus Welliver in the lead roles.

The movie will once again bring to screens Moore and Gibbons’ story, published in 1986 and set in an alternative world in which costumed vigilantes are real. Inspired by Moore being unable to use some of DC’s big name characters, he created his own alternates and challenged the nature and morality of superhero storytelling.

Rhys will voice Dan Dreiberg (aka Nite Owl), Sackhoff will voice Laurie Juspeczyk (aka Silk Spectre), while Welliver will voice Walter Kovacs (aka Rorschach).

Watchmen’ has been targeted several times for adaptation, including by a variety of filmmakers who tried, but couldn’t make it happen; Terry Gilliam, David Hayter, Darren Aronofsky among them.

Zack Snyder finally succeeded, with his (mostly) faithful live-action adaptation debuting in 2009 to mixed reviews and $185.3 million worldwide. It was supported by its own animation, a take on the graphic novel’s story-within-the-story ‘Tales of the Black Freighter’.

Damon Lindelof won praise for his 2019 HBO series, which continues the story 30 years after the events of the graphic novel, drawing from the canon history but also going off in interesting new directions.

  • Christopher Reeve’s Son Will to Appear in ‘Superman’

    • Will Reeve, son of Christopher Reeve will appear in ‘Superman’.
    • James Gunn is including him as a nod to Superman’s screen legacy.
    • The movie will be in theaters on July 11th next year.

Given his love for DC lore and the character’s cinematic history, it’s perhaps not surprising that writer/director (and current DC Studios co-chief) James Gunn is including a big nod to one of the most notable –– if not the most notable –– performers to slip on the suit.

According to local reports in Cleveland, where some scenes from the movie have been shot (and since confirmed by the likes of Variety), ABC News correspondent Will Reeve is making a cameo as a TV news reporter in the movie.

Reeve is, as his surname suggests, the son of Christopher Reeve, who found fame in 1978 playing Clark Kent/Superman for director Richard Donner. Reeve would go on to reprise the role in three sequels.

    What’s the story of ‘Superman’?

Little is truly known about the plotline at this point, but Gunn has been clear that he’s eschewing the usual exploding home planet Krypton/arrival in Smallville origin story (though those will likely be referenced) in favor of more of a workplace film with Clark showing up to work at the Planet, where Lois will already be an established reporting star.

David Corenswet is playing Clark Kent/Supes, while Rachel Brosnahan will be Lois.

But despite earlier rumors, Gunn recently shot down the idea that Milly Alcock, the new Supergirl, is making a cameo herself in ‘Superman’. Which isn’t to say he might not be bluffing to maintain the mystery, but for the most part, the filmmaker has been on the level about such things.

What else is planned to celebrate the legacy of Christopher Reeve?

The actor, who was paralyzed in a riding accident in 1995, died in 2004.

His legacy will be chronicled in a new documentary called ‘Super/Man’ that Warner Bros. bought at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. That movie will be shown in select theaters via Fathom Events on September 21st, followed by a repeat screening on Reeve’s birthday, September 25th.

    Green Lantern, meet greenlight.

After several years of development, and one big change in creative direction, ‘Lanterns’, adapting the ‘Green Lantern’ DC comics character, has scored a series order from HBO.

It’ll be part of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Studios plan for a freshly intertwined set of movies and shows and was included in their big announcement last year.

What’s the story of ‘Green Lantern’ in comics form?

(L to R) Green Lanterns Hal Jordan and John Stewart from DC Comics. Photo: DC Comics.

James Gunn and the cast of 'Superman.'
(Center) James Gunn and the cast of ‘Superman.’ Photo: James Gunn’s Instagram Account.

Gunn has Nathan Fillion playing the Guy Gardner incarnation in his ‘Superman’ movie, which lands on July 11th next year.

And the show had been in development before Gunn and Safran made their big announcement. Back in 2020, ‘Pride and Prejudice and Zombies’ Seth Grahame-Smith hopped aboard to write and run what HBO Max (as the streaming service was then called) was picturing its most expensive series to date, a space-set ‘Green Lantern’ drama whose focus would be the Alan Scott and Guy Gardner iterations of the character among the first and most popular versions.

They’ve received the go-ahead for eight initial episodes in a straight-to-series order.

Here’s what DC Studios bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran said about the news:

“We’re thrilled to bring this seminal DC title to HBO with Chris, Damon and Tom at the helm. John Stewart and Hal Jordan are two of DC’s most compelling characters, and ‘Lanterns’ brings them to life in an original detective story that is a foundational part of the unified DCU we’re launching next summer with ‘Superman.’ ”

When will ‘Lantern’ be on screens?

HBO has yet to confirm a release date for the series. Since it has yet to be shot (or even cast), we wouldn’t expect it much before late 2025 or at some point in 2026.

While it looked like Latino superhero tale ‘Blue Beetle’ might have arrived at exactly the wrong time –– just as the DC movie universe overseen by Zack Snyder was being swept aside for the new regime run by James Gunn and Peter Safran of the rechristened DC Studios –– there was chatter at the time (including from Gunn) that it might not be the last we’d see of Jaime Reyes, the character played on screen by ‘Cobra Kai’s Xolo Maridueña.

And indeed, that appears to be true, since Deadline reports that an animated series based on the Reyes character and his bonded armor is now in the works.

Recent college grad Reyes returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it. As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab.

When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armor capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the Blue Beetle.

Originally created by artist Charles Nicholas Wojtkoski and writer Will Eisner for Fox Comics’ ‘Mystery Men’ Comics in 1939, Blue Beetle was introduced as Dan Garret, a vigilante who fought crime using powers gained from chemical compound Vitamin 2-X, though that origin was later retconned to an archeologist with a suit and abilities derived from the alien Khaji Da scarab living weapon. He was succeeded by tech whizz Ted Kord, first appearing in Charlton Comics (which bought Fox and was itself later taken over by DC).

The Jaime Reyes version, a creation of Keith Giffen, John Rogers and Cully Hamner for 2006’s ‘Infinite Crisis Issue 5, spawned a titular title two months later in May of that year. In his story, Reyes discovered the Blue Beetle scarab on the way home from school with two of his best friends Paco and Brenda, half-buried in a disused lot. Reyes took the scarab home, curious as to what it might be. That night, the scarab came alive, and grafted itself to the base of Jaime’s spine, and provided him with a suit of extraterrestrial armor, which can be modified to enhance his speed and strength, as well as to create weapons, wings, and shields.
