Matthew Perry, who became hugely famous thanks to his role on iconic TV sitcom ‘Friends’, has died at the age of 54.

He was reportedly found in a jacuzzi at his home, but the investigation is ongoing. He’ll be remembered primarily for his work on ‘Friends’ but enjoyed a long career on screens big and small.

Matthew Langford Perry was born in Williamstown, Massachusetts, on August 19th, 1969. He was raised in Ottawa, Canada, where he attended elementary school alongside Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

His mother, Suzanne Morrison, was a journalist and press secretary to Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, Justin’s father, while his father, John Bennett Perry, was an actor and model.

Perry made his television debut in 1979 on an episode of ‘240-Robert’ (which starred his father). After moving to Los Angeles to pursue acting, he would go on to book roles in shows like ‘Not Necessarily the News’, ‘Charles in Charge’, ‘Silver Spoons’, ‘Just the Ten of Us’ and ‘Highway to Heaven’. Perry became a series regular on ‘Boys Will be Boys’, which premiered in 1987 and ran for a single season.

In 1989 he had a recurring role on ‘Growing Pains’ followed by a series regular role on ‘Sydney’. He’d continue to guest star on shows like ‘Who’s the Boss?’ ‘Beverly Hills, 90210’, and ‘Dream On’.

In 1993 he was a series regular on ‘Home Free’, but his big break would come the following year.

In 1994, Perry landed the role of the wise-cracking Chandler Bing on the NBC sitcom ‘Friends.’ Along with co-stars David Schwimmer, Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow and Matt LeBlanc he became a household name.

Across 10 seasons, ‘Friends’ was the most successful comedy series of the ‘90s, earning different generations of fans during its run and in more recent times since younger audiences have discovered it via Netflix.

Perry, along with his colleagues, would end up earning a huge $1 million fee per episode.

And though he never reached the heights of, say, his co-star Aniston in terms of movie fame, he appeared on a variety of shows and films following his time on the series.

His post-friends TV work included appearances on ‘The West Wing’, ‘Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip’ and ‘Mr. Sunshine’, a sitcom he co-created that lasted for nine episodes. A reboot of ‘The Odd Couple’ fared better, lasting three seasons.

Warner Bros. TV, the production company behind friends, issued a statement on his death:

“We are devastated by the passing of our dear friend Matthew Perry. Matthew was an incredibly gifted actor and an indelible part of the Warner Bros. Television Group family. The impact of his comedic genius was felt around the world, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of so many. This is a heartbreaking day, and we send our love to his family, his loved ones, and all of his devoted fans.”

Paget Brewster, who appeared on ‘Friends’ hit Twitter to offer her own tribute:

    Matthew Perry: life struggles

Perry was open about his battles with addiction to both alcohol and pills and spent a considerable amount of time and money getting sober. He ended up founding Perry House, a men’s sober living facility, in his old Malibu beach home. “I really lived life to its fullest and that got me in trouble from time to time,” he said in a US Weekly interview several years ago.

Courteney Cox Recreates ‘Pivot!’ Scene From ‘Friends’ in Hilarious Video

    NBC

She may not have appeared in the scene herself when “Friends” first aired, but Courteney Cox got a real-life re-do of a classic moment from the sitcom while moving furniture at her home over the weekend.

In a video shared on her Instagram page, Cox, who played Monica Geller on the hit series, channeled her onscreen brother, Ross (David Schwimmer), by helpfully — or perhaps not so helpfully — shouting “Pivot!” to a group of guys relocating a desk to a different room in her house.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/BuhKV-zgp38/

Devoted “Friends” fans should immediately get the reference, which aired during the episode “The One With the Cop,” a season five installment that just celebrated its 20th anniversary last month. (We’re going to pause for a moment to feel old as hell.) In the scene, an increasingly frustrated Ross repeatedly shouts “Pivot!” at his pals Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) and Chandler (Matthew Perry) while the trio try — and fail — to carry a couch upstairs.

Watch the original scene here (the action starts around the 1:00 mark):

Cox had much better luck than Ross, since her movers were able to successfully get her piece of furniture to its destination (and without having to cut it in half, either). We just wish one of her helpers had retorted with Chandler’s “Shut up! Shut up! Shut up!” Next time, Courteney.

UK Police Thank David Schwimmer After Arresting Lookalike Thief

    NBC

An alleged thief in the UK who bears a striking resemblance to “Friends” star David Schwimmer has been arrested, and local authorities are thanking the actor for helping to assist in their search for the lookalike criminal.

A Facebook post (which has since been removed) from the Blackpool Police in Lancashire, England went viral last month, thanks to the pictured suspect’s uncanny resemblance to Schwimmer. Followers immediately latched on to the similarity, and thousands of people chimed with with “Friends”-related jokes about the identity of the culprit.

Schwimmer eventually caught wind of the story, and shared his own security camera-style video, insisting he was at home in New York City at the time of the incident.

Despite all the silliness that the original post generated, the “Friends”-adjacent attention ended up helping authorities after all: They revealed this week that they arrested a 36-year-old man in connection with the theft.

“Thank you for the support, especially !” the Lancashire Police tweeted on Tuesday.

The moral of the story? The internet will always be there for you, whether it’s cracking jokes about Ross from “Friends” or helping to crack a police case.

  • 13 Times We Were All Ross Geller From ‘Friends’

Even when we re-watch “Friends” for the billionth time, we always wonder: “Which friend am I?

Even though we all want to be a Rachel or a Joey, or claim to be a Phoebe or a Chandler, we all know — deep down inside — that we’re the Ross of our friend group.

Here are the 13 times we all had a little bit of Ross in us.

  • David Schwimmer Splits From Wife of 7 Years

Zoe Buckman and husband David SchwimmerDavid Schwimmer and his wife of 7 years, Zoë Buckman, are splitting up.

The couple issued an announcement, saying, “It is with great love, respect and friendship that we have decided to take some time apart while we determine the future of our relationship. Our priority is, of course, our daughter’s happiness and well being during this challenging time, and so we ask for your support and respect for our privacy as we continue to raise her together and navigate this new chapter for our family.”

Buckman, 32, is a British multimedia artist.

The two have been together for more than 10 years and tied the knot in June 2010. They met in 2007 in London when Schwimmer was directing the comedy “Run, Fatboy, Run.”

Their daughter, Chloe Buckman Schwimmer, is 5 years old. This was the first marriage for both.

Schwimmer was last seen in “The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story,” as Robert Kardashian: He received his received his second Emmy nomination for the role.

  • ‘Jarring’ ‘Friends’ Fame Made David Schwimmer Want to Hide

Guess we were a little too there for “Friends,” picking up new co-star friends, new loyal fans, and some fat new paychecks. But he felt the overnight fame, coming when he was 27, was a Catch-22 — he had a steady acting job, but the attention ruined his people-watching acting process. Now he was the one being watched.

“It was pretty jarring and it messed with my relationship to other people in a way that took years, I think, for me to adjust to and become comfortable with,” Schwimmer told The Hollywood Reporter. “As an actor, the way I was trained, my job was to observe life and to observe other people, so I used to walk around with my head up, really engaged and watching people. The effect of celebrity was the absolute opposite: It made me want to hide under a baseball cap and not be seen. And I realized after a while that I was no longer watching people; I was trying to hide. So I was trying to figure out: How do I be an actor in this new world, in this new situation? How do I do my job? That was tricky.”

NO SALES REUTERS/Jon Ragel/NBC/HandoutSchwimmer earned his first Emmy nomination for “Friends,” and now 21 years later he is nominated for his role as O.J. Simpson attorney Robert Kardashian in “The People v. O.J. Simpson.” Even taking on new roles, it’s hard for Schwimmer to shake off Ross. He told THR that TV stardom is different from any other kind because of the intimacy of spending one night a week in people’s homes for 10 years.

“There’s less of a barrier than there is with, say, a big movie star — you see them in this other kind of a space with a lot of other people on a big screen and you see that their role changes in every movie, for the most part,” Schwimmer said. “They’re very different people in very different situations, whereas in our show I’m the same guy for 10 years, you can rely on me to be a certain way and you know me — or you think you know me.”

You think you know him. But he’s not Ross. He’s just the rich guy who played him for a while. And now he wants to observe you for his next role, so please keep walking.

  • Famous TV Shows That Launched Stars’ Careers

Freaks and GeeksEvery famous actor has one performance that served as a breakout role, and for many, that role was in a television series. Inviting the actors into your home on a daily or weekly basis is one of the most magical things about television. So you feel invested in those moments you see a star being born. From low-rated shows that only ran a season to ratings behemoths that remained popular for more than a decade, these series launched the careers of some beloved stars.

    ‘Friends’ (1994 – 2004)

It’s easy to forget that the cast of “Friends” were all unknowns at the start. Family Ties,” and a handful of movie roles. Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, and David Schwimmer were all working actors but none had yet found a project that took off. Everything changed when the six of them sat on that orange velvet couch at Central Perk, drinking oversized lattes. Despite some spectacularly awful 1990s fashion and those distinctive haircuts, “Friends” doesn’t feel dated and remains one of the classic sitcoms of all time. The cast has not stopped working since the show went off the air, proving they will always be there for us.

    ‘My So-Called Life’ (1994 – 1995)

Critically beloved and tragically canceled after one season, “My So-Called Life” launched the careers of Homeland,” while Leto, among other achievements, won every Supporting Acting award possible for his work in “Dallas Buyers Club.”

    ‘Freaks and Geeks’ (1999 – 2000)

Cult classic “Freaks and Geeks” was a veritable talent farm, launching the careers of Linda Cardellini, John Francis Daley, Seth Rogen, James Franco, Jason Segel, and Busy Phillips. It was also created by Paul Feig (“Bridesmaids“) and executive produced by a little-known guy named Judd Apatow. So how exactly did this dramedy last for a mere 15 episodes on NBC? That’s one of television’s most enduring mysteries.

    ‘ER’ (1994 – 2009)

Best known for stints on “The Facts of Life” and “Roseanne,” ER.” It’s a perfect example of the right actor being cast in the right role at the right time. Clooney brought an immense amount of charm to the role, and Doug became the quintessential bad boy with a heart of gold. His chemistry with co-star Julianna Margulies was electric, making Doug and Carol Hathaway one of the iconic TV couples of the ’90s. And don’t forget — he brought the Caesar haircut back. Clooney left “ER” in 1999 to pursue movies, but returned as a guest star several times, proving that he never forgot where he came from.

Lest you think Clooney and Margulies were the only stars to emerge from County General, don’t forget that Noah Wyle, Ming-Na, Alex Kingston, and Maura Tierney all had breakout roles on “ER” as well, making it a destination show for dramatic talent in the ’90s.

    ‘Dawson’s Creek’ (1998 – 2003)

Dawson’s Creek.” Holmes even famously delayed her audition so she could star as Lola in her high school’s production of “Damn Yankees.” While the entire cast delivers fantastic performances, the one to watch is future three-time Oscar nominee Williams. Her portrayal of the troubled Jen Lindley displays a maturity well beyond her 15 years.

  • Watch an Extended Clip From the ‘Friends’ Reunion at the James Burrows Tribute

We’ve seen the photos, we’ve seen the promos, and now, we have our first extended look at the “Friends” reunion, which took place last month at a tribute special for legendary sitcom director James Burrows, and is set to air later this month.

The clip, shared by TVLine, features five of the six main “Friends” stars (minus Matthew Perry, who’s in London starring in a play) reminiscing about their memories of Burrows, who directed many episodes of the longrunning NBC series, including its pilot. David Schwimmer went on to helm several episodes of the show as well, and said during the special that he looked to Burrows for guidance in exploring his newfound interest in directing.

“I asked him if I could watch him and follow him,” Schwimmer said of shadowing Burrows, both on the set of “Friends” and other series. ” … He graciously took me under his wing, and I learned so much from him.”

Co-star Lisa Kudrow reminisced about how Burrows started calling “Friends” cast members by the names of other famous characters from his previous gigs, including dubbing Courteney Cox “Mary Tyler Moore,” Matt LeBlac “Danza” (“Taxi” star Tony Danza), and Kudrow “Reverend Jim” (fellow “Taxi” star Christopher Lloyd).

“He wasn’t saying, ‘You’re as good as Christopher Lloyd,’” Kudrow conceded. ” … But I heard what I needed to hear.”

Check out the full clip above. The entire special, “Must See TV: An All Star Tribute to James Burrows,” airs on NBC on February 21.

  • ‘Friends’ Stars Asked About Sleeping Together in First NBC Tribute Promo

1996 THE CAST OF THE TV HIT SERIES "FRIENDS"NBC’s upcoming special is ostensibly a tribute to sitcom director James Burrows, but let’s be honest: It’s a tribute to ’80s-’00s TV nostalgia, especially for “Friends” fans. It’s not really a “Friends” reunion without Matthew Perry, but he’ll still be part of the show via a separate taped segment. The other five — Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox Arquette, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer — gathered for the special, which was recently taped, and NBC just shared the first promo.

In the video, we see shots of interviews with the casts of several classic sitcoms, including “Cheers,” “Taxi,” “Frasier,” “Mike & Molly,” “Will & Grace,” “The Big Bang Theory,” and, yeah, “Friends.”

The promo ends with a glimpse of the “Friends” panel, with Jennifer Aniston tripping over Matt LeBlanc to take her seat, and moderator Andy Cohen asking the five-some, “Did you all sign contracts saying that you wouldn’t sleep with each other?” The camera cuts to Lisa Kudrow turning to David Schwimmer, joking, “David, say something!”

    Here’s the preview:

It should be pretty cute, even if it’s not an “official” reunion, and it will be great to see the other casts talk about their shows, too. The “All-Star Tribute to James Burrows” airs Sunday, February 21 at 9 p.m. on NBC.

  • David Schwimmer Says the ‘Friends’ Reunion Was ‘Lovely’

Cast Members Of NBC's Comedy Series Friends Pictured (L) To R : David Schwimmer As RossAudiences only have to wait a few more weeks before they can watch the “Friends” cast reunion for themselves, and according to one star, the event was as wonderful as you’re imagining.

David Schwimmer spoke to Entertainment Tonight about the gathering, which took place last week at a ceremony saluting legendary television director James Burrows, and featured the casts of several shows Burrows shepherded, including “The Big Bang Theory,” “Frasier,” and “Will & Grace.” The event was taped, and will air on NBC next month.

According to Schwimmer, the experience of reuniting with almost the entire “Friends” crew (minus Matthew Perry, who’s in London rehearsing for a play) couldn’t have been better, and Schwimmer, Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, and Matt LeBlanc were all thrilled to be there for Burrows.

“It was just lovely to be in the same room and to honor Jimmy, who we all really love,” Schwimmer told ET. “He is a prolific director and he really, really helped forge the cast as an ensemble, and really clarified all those relationships from the get go. So it was lovely to be there.”

Burrows has directed 1,000 episodes of television since his career began back in the 1970s, including stints on classic sitcoms such as “Taxi,” “Cheers,” “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” “The Bob Newhart Show,” and “Laverne & Shirley.” He helmed the “Friends” pilot, as well as many more episodes throughout the show’s first few seasons, including the infamous “The One Where Ross and Rachel Take a Break.”
