I really wanted to create something extraordinary with the two of them. I Just love the script so much.”

Paramount Pictures made its presentation to the 2026 CinemaCon crowd.
Among the movies promoted were ‘Street Fighter’ and ‘Scary Movie’.
There was also a look at a new ‘Christmas Carol’ adaptation.
Given the tumultuous behind-the-scenes business activity of first the Skydance/Paramount acquisition and now the combined studios’ ongoing mission to buy Warner Bros., it’s fair to wonder how much of that will be referenced at the company’s 2026 CinemaCon presentation.
But as is more likely, we’re expecting a focus on movies including the new ‘Scary Movie’ entry and a fresh take on the ‘Street Fighter’ video game.

Unlike some of its competition, Paramount doesn’t have many of its big hitter franchises with ready entries, though we’ll likely get something from the early 2027 arrival of the fourth ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ movie.
Following a looong sizzle reel (narrated by Tom Cruise and ending with him chilling out on the lot’s iconic water tower), freshly minted Paramount/Skydance boss David Ellison took the stage to enthuse about storytelling and –– cross it off your bingo card! –– further confirm that a merged Paramount and Warner Bros. would commit to 30 movies a year theatrically, with healthy 45-day release windows.
There was also a lot of chat about the IP-based movies they’re developing –– expect more ‘Star Trek’, ‘Transformers’, ‘World War Z’ and ‘Top Gun’, plus a ‘Call of Duty’ movie. Oh, and following the success of the first film via Neon, the studio is the new home of the ‘Longlegs’ franchise. And we also learned that classic antagonists Shredder and Kang will show up in the ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem’ sequel, due in 2027.
‘Sonic the Hedgehog 4’ opens in theaters on March 19, 2027.
There wasn’t much on the fourth ‘Sonic’ beyond a quick video from the set that confirms Jim Carrey will be back. There was also a mention of Kristen Bell, who voices Amy Rose.

Eilish and director James Cameron (yes, that James Cameron) took the stage to showcase the tour movie (Live in 3D in case you forgot), with Cameron talking up how they developed new 3D tech to make the film –– and make it look amazing. He calls it a “VIP experience”.
The audience were given 3D glasses to watch some new footage from the tour movie.
Marlon Wayans plays Shorty in ‘Scary Movie’ from Paramount Pictures.
Next to take the stage was the ‘Scary Movie’ cast (well, Marlon and Shawn Wayans and Anna Faris) discuss the new reboot (or sixth film) in the horror spoof series. “Nobody is safe” seems to be the mantra here, and the Wayans introduced some fresh footage from the movie.
(L to R) Anna Faris plays Cindy and Regina Hall plays Brenda in ‘Scary Movie’ from Paramount Pictures.
That “nobody is safe” also applies to the genre titles this one takes pot shots at, including ‘Sinners’, ‘M3GAN’ and more.

The new –– and final? –– ‘Jackass’ saw main man Johnny Knoxville trying to convince us all that it really is the last one. Guessing they’re all getting a little too old for the crazy stunts.

The cast for the latest attempt to kick off a franchise based on the classic video game title arrived on stage to discuss it. Wrestler-turned-actor Cody Rhodes showed up dressed in costume as Guile.
They introduced the first trailer for the movie, which you can see above.
David Corenswet as “John Tuggle” in ‘Mr. Irrelevant’ from Paramount Pictures.
The new movie from Jonathan Levine stars ‘Superman’s David Corenswet and focuses on the enduring impact John Tuggle had on his team and teammates after being drafted by the New York Giants.
Corenswet appeared via video to introduce the film, talking about how he was inspired by Tuggle’s story but was also conflicted as an Eagles fan playing a Giants icon.

The new David Ayer movie features Brad Pitt as a former Navy SEAL and his retired combat dog who attempt to return to civilization after a catastrophic accident deep in the Alaskan wilderness.
The new movie from Ti West (who has been better known for more brutal horror in the past) features Johnny Depp as Scrooge. Some footage was screened. Unsurprisingly, it’s leaning into the scarier elements of the story. Happy Christmas?
Gina Prince-Bythewood‘s new film adaptsTomi Adeyemi‘s novel, featuring a woman blessed with magical powers by the gods and living in a place where you are forbidden to use them, teams up with a princess to summon the gods and bring down the oppressive regime.
The footage shows Viola Davis‘ Mama Agba and her allies smacking around some tax collectors. The film is a story about the struggle to bring back magic in a kingdom where magic users are routinely executed. The magic users have Targaryen-like white hair. We see one magician summon a tree fighter to battle enemy warriors. The movie looks unique.

Noticeably absent? ‘Avatar: Ang, The Last Airbender’, which Paramount originally planned for theaters and then decided to shove to its streaming service. But the biggest news? It recently leaked online….
And with that, Paramount is done!
‘Street Fighter’ opens in theaters on October 16th.
‘Lanterns’ actor Aaron Pierre is headed to ‘Man of Tomorrow’.
He’ll cross over as his Green Lantern Corps character John Stewart.
James Gunn is writing and will direct the movie.
Looks like ‘Man of Tomorrow’ will truly live up to both connectivity between the big and small screen DC Studios universe and adding in more characters for the ‘Superman’ follow-up.
As first reported by Jeff Sneider and since confirmed by Deadline, Aaron Pierre, who plays Green-Lantern-in-training John Stewart in HBO series ‘Lanterns’ will bring the character to the big screen for the movie.

Filmmaker/DC Studios boss James Gunn is once again writing and directing the new movie, which is scheduled to start shooting next month.
“It’s a story about Lex Luthor and Superman having to work together to a certain degree against a much, much bigger threat. It’s more complicated than that but that’s a big part of it. It’s as much a Lex movie as it is a Superman movie. I loved working with Nicholas Hoult. I relate to the character of Lex, sadly. I really wanted to create something extraordinary with the two of them. I Just love the script so much.”
The opponents will be unlikely allies in this follow-up to the superhero adventure, and now we know the cause of their unity: nefarious villain Brainiac.

He certainly makes it sound more like a direct sequel to ‘Superman’ than had been previously thought, and fans are already speculating that Brainiac could be the big villain this time around.
Gunn also mentioned he’s looking to start production in April next year.
The ‘Superman: The Man of Tomorrow’ DC Comics series ran for 16 issues from 1995 to 1999, and there is an animated adaptation already.
But like ‘Superman’ before it, don’t expect this to be a straight adaptation, instead we know that Gunn will be picking and choosing what he wants to use, and once more bringing his own sensibilities to bear on the story.
Who is Brainiac?
The character of Brainiac in DC Comics’ ‘Superman: Brainiac,’ written by Geoff Johns. Photo: DC Comics.
Brainiac was created by writer Otto Binder and artist Al Plastino, and made his debut in Action Comics #242.
He’s an incredibly smart android who comes from the planet of Colu and is hellbent on collecting all the knowledge in the universe. Among his powers is the ability to shrink cities and destroy planets, and he has a history of shrinking Superman’s home planet of Krypton; and in some storylines even destroyed the place (we don’t yet know if he’ll have been the cause of the planet’s destruction in Gunn’s ‘Superman’ timeline).
Milly Alcock stars in ‘Supergirl’. Photo: Warner Bros.
DC Studios’ next big film, ‘Supergirl‘, follows Kara Zor-El (Milly Alcock) as she travels across the galaxy with her dog Krypto, the fan favorite of 2025’s ‘Superman’. To celebrate the release of the first teaser trailer, Moviefone attended a press conference featuring Milly Alcock and director Craig Gillespie, moderated by James Gunn. ‘Supergirl’ comes to the big screen on June 26th, 2026.
When talking about her first day on the ser of ‘Supergirl’, Milly Alcock confirmed that Superman will be in the film, something fans hoped for but did not know for certain.
Milly Alcock: It was with Superman. And I wasn’t in the suit, and I was speaking a different language. That day was really hard. It was like two degrees. That was a hard day. The whole scene was in Kryptonian.
2) ‘Supergirl’ Shows Young Women It Is Okay To Be Flawed
James Gunn at CinemaCon 2025. Photo: Warner Bros.
Supergirl is not Superman, in that she is a very flawed individual. Both Milly Alcock and James Gunn agree that ‘Supergirl’ is about showing young women that this is perfectly okay.
Milly Alock: I think that what Supergirl represents for young women especially is that you can be flawed and that you can be openly, you don’t have to be perfect in order to come to some internal self-resolution. I think that we’re thrusted upon this narrative, especially women, that you have to be perfect in every aspect of your life. And I think that Kara is someone who so beautifully leans into her flaws. And I think that that’s really special.
James Gunn: Yeah, I agree with you. That’s really what spoke to me both in the book and on the script is that a lot of times for some reason our female superhero leads are just so much more perfect than our male. Tony Stark and Star-Lord are such messes. And yet that isn’t always the same thing for our female superhero leads and seeing somebody who was just so imperfect and such a mess but just really a beautiful soul.
3) Craig Gillespie Explains That The Fight Sequence Camera Work Changes A Lot During ‘Supergirl’
As discussed earlier, Kara Zor-El is a bit of a mess, and because of that, depending on what mood she is in and where they are in the story, the fight sequence camera work in ‘Supergirl’ changes.
Craig Gillespie: There was a lot going on, but it was really exciting in a way because in each case, it was always a little different. It’s like whether she had her full power, whether she had no power if she’s on a red planet, whether she has the fully generated power, and also emotionally where she is in the story dictated a lot of how these fight sequences go. So if she’s in a very angry place, it’s going to be a much more phonetically camera, like messy, kind of aggressive camera work. If she’s feeling in the zone, so to speak, the camera work gets more fluid. So trying to figure out where we are in the story and how that reinforces her emotionally with the fight sequences was really fun.
4) The Majority Of ‘Supergirl’ Takes Place In Space
Milly Alcock on the set of ‘Supergirl’. Photo: James Gunn’s Instagram account.
‘Superman‘ and ‘Supergirl’ are very different films. They are both a very different tone, and ‘Supergirl’ takes place almost entirely in space, Craig Gillespie explains.
Craig Gillespie: They are so different in tone. And to be able to really lean into it and embrace it, and plus, are we allowed to say this? It’s like the whole movie takes place in outer space. So it’s a very different world to start with. We had a completely blank slate.
James Gunn: The outer space thing’s a big part of it. Because it is a space fantasy.
5) Krypto Is A Big Part Of ‘Supergirl’… And He Is Still Not A Good Boy
As seen in the teaser trailer, Krypto is going to be a big part of ‘Supergirl’, and to no one’s surprise, he is still not a good dog.
James Gunn: I think you’ll see pretty quickly he’s returning. I don’t think he knows what good is. I think he just exists in his own head space. He’s not a good dog. He’s a terrible dog. He continues to be a terrible dog. The difference is Kara loves him as a terrible dog. She loves him. Whereas he gets on Clark’s nerves, you know? Maybe he’ll get better.

What is the plot of ‘Supergirl’?
While celebrating her 21st birthday, Kara Zor-El travels across the galaxy with her dog Krypto, during which she meets the young Ruthye Marye Knoll and goes on a “murderous quest for revenge”.
Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda are running the show.
This summer’s ‘Superman’ was not just a hit at the box office and a successful jumping-off point for James Gunn’s fledgling reboot of the DC universe on screens, it also saw fans embracing several characters.
Now, per The Hollywood Reporter, one of the most popular is getting his own TV spin-off show. Sorry, Krypto fans… it’s Jimmy Olsen.
OT00arSyAacXCGscjvNND4
Yes, the photographer reporter buddy to Clark Kent (David Corenswet) and Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan), as played in the movie by Skyler Gisondo, will be heading up his own show, currently without a title.
The concept centers on Olsen, as well as other Daily Planet reporters (minus Lois and Clark who are unlikely to appear beyond possible cameos), who tackle cases involving super-powered villains.
Gorilla Grodd will be in the spotlight for the first season.
In case you don’t know your DC lore, Grodd is a super-intelligent evil ape who rules a secret African city named Gorilla City. The character is a key antagonist for the Flash, and first appeared in an issue of the Scarlet Speedster’s comics back in 1959. He was created by John Broome and Carmine Infantino.
Could this be a stealthy way of introducing DC Studios’ take on the speedster? Anything’s possible, though we won’t hold our breath just yet.
As for the tone, the new show sees Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda, who created the award-winning Netflix mockumentary ‘American Vandal,’ overseeing, so we’re predicting a comical mock-doc format.
What other DC TV series are in the works?
(L to R) Aaron Pierre as John Stewart and Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan in ‘Lanterns’. Photo: John P. Johnson/HBO.
Probably the highest profile of the series right now is ‘Lanterns’, which has been shot and is due to debut on HBO next year. It stars Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre as two of the Green Lantern Corps, humans given powerful rings that can manipulate energy.
The show is planned as a gritty, mostly Earth-based thriller series and will see ‘Superman’s Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion) show up.
And more recently, we learned that another DC comics title (albeit not one set within the ‘Superman’ universe), ‘V for Vendetta’ is in the early stages of a possible TV series, following the 2006 movie adaptation.
When will the Jimmy Olsen show be on screens?
There is no word yet on when this one might arrive, but don’t expect it much before some point in 2027. Meanwhile, hope burns eternal for the ‘Eagly & Krypto: Animal Trouble’ show we keep watching (in our heads).

What else is going on with the rebooted DC movie universe?

Next up in movie terms is ‘Supergirl’, starring Milly Alcock, who –– spoiler alert in case you still haven’t seen ‘Superman’ –– showed up for a quick seen at the end of that movie to pick up Krypto. That film is due out on June 26th next year.
Following that we have a dip into horror with ‘Clayface’, the tale of the Batman antagonist, which has James Watkins directing and Tom Rhys Harries starring. It’ll head to theaters on September 11th, 2026.
And finally on the actually confirmed front there is ‘Lanterns’ featuring two of the Green Lantern characters, with the show headed to HBO Max next year (but with no official date announced yet).
When will ‘Man of Tomorrow’ be on screens?
The movie is set for a July 9th, 2027 release date.
‘Superman’ follow-up ‘Man of Tomorrow’ is due in 2027.
David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult are expected to return.
James Gunn is writing and directing.
It might not have been a completely soaraway success at the box office this summer, but ‘Superman’, DC Studios co-chief James Gunn’s cinematic kick off to his new take on the comic book universe certainly performed well enough that a follow-up is now in the works.
OT00arSyAacXCGscjvNND4
Gunn himself had already said that he was in the writing phase for a new movie, and he has now taken to social media to tease that it’ll be flying into theaters on July 9th, 2027.
While there are few clear details on the movie so far, Gunn’s choice of image for the post (see below) does seem to indicate that at least David Corenswet will be back as Superman, alongside Nicholas Hoult as the scheming Lex Luthor.
Gunn is keeping this one close to his chest for now. The filmmaker has previously clarified that it won’t be a direct sequel to ‘Superman’, but the image of Supes and Lex certainly does point to a return for the hero and villain of the movie.

We’d be surprised if the likes of Rachel Brosnahan and Skyler Gisondo didn’t return as Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen respectively, but we’ll have to wait and see whether the likes of the Justice Gang or any of the other supporting characters show up.
And what of breakout star Krypto, though we know we’re getting more of the chaotic canine when ‘Supergirl’ lands next year (more on that in a moment? Even if he doesn’t crash the follow-up movie, we can perhaps hope for a limited series run of him and ‘Peacemaker’s Eagly teaming up?

‘Superman’ stayed top of the box office for a second weekend.
James Gunn’s movie dropped 54% following its successful launch.
The new ‘Smurfs’ movie and an ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ reboot failed to have much impact.
As a comic book hero, Superman can famously leap tall buildings in a single bound. From the looks of the performance by the latest cinematic take on the character –– James Gunn’s ‘Superman’ –– he can also hold off the competition, as the movie stayed top of the box office this weekend.
OT00arSyAacXCGscjvNND4
With a relatively light 54% drop, the movie took in $57.3 million from 4,774 venues. That was enough to secure the top spot once more, with strong weekday business also helping.
Here’s what Comscore analyst Paul Dergarabedian had to say about the performance:
“A 54% second weekend drop is indicative of a marketplace that’s embracing the film”
It’s good news for Warner Bros. and DC Studios, which is hoping the movie, starring David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan and Nicholas Hoult, will spark interest in the new, interconnected DC Universe.
Domestically, the movie has now made $236 million, and its global haul is now $406 million.

‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ settled for second place once more place with $23 million from 3,854 venues, a 42% drop from last week.
After three weekends of release, the dinosaur movie has earned $276 million domestically.
Yet it’s on the global marketplace where the latest ‘Jurassic World’ outing is really excelling, making more than $647 million. That’s a solid result, if still behind the billion-dollar plus earnings of the previous three franchise entries.
What about the rest of the box office?
Jennifer Love Hewitt as Julie James in 2025’s ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’. Photo: Sony Pictures.
The strongest start among a clutch of misfiring newcomers was Sony’s ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’, opening with $13 million from 3,206 theaters.
‘Last Summer’ added $11.6 million overseas from 58 markets, bringing its worldwide total to $24.6 million. That suggests the nostalgia factor for the horror reboot (which featured roles for the original’s Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt) wasn’t as strong as the studio hoped. Still, with a thrifty $18 million budget to make back (plus marketing costs), there’s less pressure to perform.
Fourth place was Paramount’s Rihanna-led animated outing ‘Smurfs’, which made $11 million from 3,504 venues, a disappointing result for the $58 million-budgeted musical.
‘Smurfs’ earned $25 million at the international box office to date for a global tally of $36 million, hardly a reason for Smurfing it up, but likely one that will earn more through merchandising than ticket sales.
Fifth was Apple/Warner Bros.’ Brad Pitt-starring racing pic ‘F1’, which took in $9.6 million in its fourth weekend for a $153.6 million domestic tally and $460.8 million globally.
Finally, ‘Hereditary’ director Ari Aster’s Western satire ‘Eddington’ failed to generate much interested, flopping to seventh place and $4.2 million from 2,111 venues.
What’s to come next weekend?
Given the tracking and early buzz, it appears that ‘Superman’ won’t be flying quite so high this coming weekend as Marvel’s own latest superhero behemoth, ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ is on the launch pad.
The movie is projected to opening above $100 million, possibly as high as $140 million, so the big battle of the heroes is about to heat up.

Kara Zor-El, also known as Supergirl, enters the Fortress of Solitude at the end of ‘Superman’ to pick up her dog, Krypto, whom Kal-El was watching for her.
With ‘Supergirl’ releasing in 2026, her movie may show fans where she was while Kal-El was watching Krypto.
Knowing the movie will follow the events of the graphic novel ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’, however, this is likely the beginning of her story.
DC Studios co-CEO has a way with teasing upcoming projects without shoving them down viewers’ throats, which is why it came as no surprise to most when Kal-El’s cousin, Kara Zor-El, made a brief appearance at the end of ‘Superman‘. Her solo film will release in theaters in 2026, making this the perfect way to introduce her and allow fans to get to know the DCU version of her, as well as the (unhealthy) relationship that she has with Krypto.

Milly Alcock plays Supergirl, who stops by the Fortress of Solitude to pick up her dog, Krypto, after leaving him with her cousin Kal-El (David Corenswet) so she can go out partying – at least that is what she appears to have been doing. Anyone who has read the graphic novel that the 2026 film is based on, ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’, already knows this version of Kara.
Taking into consideration the events of the graphic novel’s storyline, ‘Supergirl‘ could take place during ‘Superman’. However, because of Krypto’s important role in the plot, at least part of it will likely take place after it.
Supergirl’s Cameo In ‘Superman’ Introduces A Comic Book Accurate Kara

Kara showing up drunk and disorderly at the end of ‘Superman’ has stirred up quite a conversation among audiences. For those who have not read ‘Woman of Tomorrow’, I can certainly see why this would take people by surprise. This version of her is much darker than others. She is not the polar opposite of the CW version, played by Melissa Benoist, but she is not very similar to her either.
The graphic novel opens with Kara drunk at a bar on a red sun planet, something that Kal-El claims is one of her favorite past times when she returns for Krypto. She is a mess, going so far as to cuss at Superman while thanking him for watching her dog. This easily comes as a shock for those that are not familiar with her darker side, but for the fans of this particular comic book storyline, seeing her in this state is exciting.
It means that DC Studios is not going to shy away from going there, which is necessary to tell the story correctly. Supergirl has not had an easy life, and letting viewers in on her past trauma, and the mental state this has left her in, is the perfect way to explore the ‘Woman of Tomorrow’ story. The themes are going to be heavy, and it is potentially a tough pill to swallow for those who prefer a lighter version of the character, but DC needs to takes risks right now. Thankfully, it seems like they are willing to do it.
‘Supergirl’ Could Take Place During The Events Of ‘Superman’
Knowing how things play out in the graphic novel is a bit of a cheat, but because of this, there is a good chance these two films can overlap. When we first meet Kara in ‘Superman’ she is drunk, having spent some time on a red sun planet partying. Because of her Kryptonian powers, this is something she cannot do on a planet with a yellow sun. Kal-El explains in the film, but essentially the rays of the sun will heal her so quickly that the alcohol is never able to take effect.
There is a decent chance that ‘Supergirl’ will start before she makes her way to Earth to pick up Krypto. It will take the time to explore this side of Kara, including her reasoning for partying so hard. We will see that dark part of her, learning just enough about it before she goes and collects Krypto.
After she leaves Earth, things are sure to get even rougher for her, as she looks deep inside herself and is forced to confront her childhood trauma. If it sticks closely to the graphic novel, there will be flashbacks as well, letting viewers in on her bringing up and what that has done to her.
Krypto’s Comic Book Storyline Is The Main Hint That ‘Supergirl’ Might Take Place After ‘Superman’
(L to R) David Corenswet and Krypto in ‘Superman.’ Photo: James Gunn’s Instagram account.
Without giving too much away, Krypto is a major catalyst for the events of the graphic novel that ‘Supergirl’ is going to be based on. It is because of this, that the odds of Kara’s movie taking place entirely during the events of ‘Superman’ start to dwindle. Yes, there could certainly be some overlap, but Krypto is too important to the story being told to not be a part of her movie at all.
‘Superman’ has now established that Krypto is Kara’s dog, a key factor in the graphic novel. He is a major part of this darker Supergirl story and will likely be included in the film. Not only has James Gunn already stated that this film is a darker take on the character, the version of her that was seen in ‘Superman’ seems to be the final bit of proof.
Whether ‘Supergirl’ and ‘Superman’ do indeed overlap or not, one thing is for sure, DC Studios is going all in on this darker side of Kara. There is still plenty of time to pick up the graphic novel and check it out before ‘Supergirl”s 2026 release – if you don’t mind potential spoilers that is.
