  • Daniel Radcliffe is “Weird Al” Yankovic in the ‘Weird’ Teaser

Weird: The Al Yankovic Story’ has been rolling (and rocking… well… folking?) through the usual stages of movie promotion.

We’ve had the first look image of star Daniel Radcliffe in costume (and big curly wig) as “Weird Al” himself. That was quickly followed by a glimpse of Evan Rachel Wood, looking every inch the Madonna of the 1980s.

Now we’ve reached the point of the teaser trailer, which features concert footage of Radcliffe-as-Al on stage performing his Madonna-parodying hit ‘Like a Surgeon’ before flashing through other moments (a lot of Hawaiian shirts, as is fitting for Yankovic’s look), and a ripped, shirtless Radcliffe on stage swigging from a bottle.

There are also mentions of his many music awards and, for some reason, a fight scene. Can’t wait to see what that is all about.

There’s certainly a lot of material to draw from in the musician’s life to date: “Weird Al” Yankovic has enjoyed quite the career as the biggest-selling comedy recording artist of all time.

A five-time Grammy winner, his 2014 release ‘Mandatory’ Fun was the first comedy album in history to debut at #1 on Billboard’s Top 200. He is one of only three artists to have had their own top 40 hits in each of the last four decades (the other two being, coincidentally, Michael Jackson and Madonna).

On August 27, 2018, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce awarded Weird Al with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He has also popped up in a host of movies, shorts, and TV series, either as himself or other characters, and might be best known for indie comedy movie ‘UHF’, which was released in 1989.

The new movie, which was spurred by Yankovic’s decision to chronicle his “depraved and scandalous” life (we’re still trying to figure out if he’s joking on that front) will chart his days spoofing the likes of the Madonna and Michael Jackson. He wrote the script alongside director Eric Appel, who has worked on projects such as ‘Silicon Valley’ and various Funny Or Die shorts (the comedy company is producing the movie alongside Tango).

Radcliffe certainly looked the part in the initial imagery, and the teaser shows him doing a fair approximation of Yankovic’s trademark voice and singing style. Plus, he’s clearly been learning his way around an accordion. And it certainly does its job, making you want to see more from the movie, which also features Rainn Wilson, Julianne Nicholson, and Toby Huss among its cast.

This movie will arrive via The Roku Channel, which recently hosted a “NewFront” presentation (essentially showing off the various shows, including a second season of Kevin Hart’s ‘Die Hart’, one of the series it acquired from the defunct Quibi, in order to attract advertising dollars.)

What we don’t yet know about the movie is exactly when it’ll premiere on Roku – a mention of fall at the end of the teaser is all we have to go on for now.

Already shaping up to be one of the more fun movies on the way, ‘Weird: The Al Yankovic Story’ set its stall out early, casting former ‘Harry Potter’ star Daniel Radcliffe as the mop-topped musician best known for his parody songs.

Now, the team behind the movie has announced some additional casting, with Evan Rachel Wood, Rainn Wilson, Toby Huss, and Julianne Nicholson aboard.

“Weird Al” Yankovic has enjoyed quite the career is the biggest-selling comedy recording artist of all time.

He has also popped up in a host of movies, shorts, and TV series, either as himself or other characters, and might be best known for indie comedy movie ‘UHF’, which was released in 1989.

The new movie, which was spurred by Yankovic’s decision to chronicle his “depraved and scandalous” life (Radcliffe’s words, not ours), will chart his days spoofing the likes of the Material Girl and the King of Pop. He wrote the script alongside director Eric Appel, who has worked on projects such as ‘Silicon Valley’ and various Funny Or Die shorts (the comedy company is producing the movie alongside Tango).

Wood here plays Madonna, and we’ve got to admit she’s a good fit for the music icon, seen here in her “Like A Virgin” career stage. She gave permission for Yankovic to parody that early song, and the result was medically themed comedy record “Like A Surgeon.”

Wood, an actor, writer, and director, is famous for the likes of ‘Thirteen’ ‘The Wrestler’ and ‘Across The Universe’, and on TV screens as revolution-minded artificial lifeform Dolores on ‘Westworld.’

As for Wilson, he’s taking on the role of Dr. Demento, the famed music DJ and champion of novelty records. Real name Barret Eugene “Barry” Hansen, Demento rose to cult status as a broadcaster who loved the crazier side of music, and he was hugely responsible for bringing Yankovic’s talents to a much wider audience.

The actor might still be best known for TV sitcom ‘The Office’, though he’s been seen in movies including ‘The Meg’ and ‘The Rocker’.

Nicholson and Huss are aboard to be Yankovic’s parents, Mary and Nick. Will they be supportive? Or shake their heads at their son’s musical ambitions? We’ll have to wait and see. Also unknown? Who else we can expect to show up in this one…

The movie is now shooting in Los Angeles, and the result will debut exclusively on the Roku channel on a yet-to-be-announced date.

Since his days at Hogwarts as the world’s most famous young wizard, Daniel Radcliffe has spent his movie career playing characters that are weird, wonderful and a world away from Harry Potter. For his latest film, the accent is firmly on the ‘weird’, as he’s portraying “Weird Al” Yankovic in a biopic of the comedy music icon. And the first picture of Radcliffe in character has arrived.

Written and directed by Eric Appel, ‘Weird: The Al Yankovic Story’ purports to hold nothing back, exploring every facet of Yankovic’s life, from his meteoric rise to fame with early hits like ‘Eat It’ and ‘Like a Surgeon’ to his torrid celebrity love affairs and famously depraved lifestyle. Yes, as you can imagine, nothing is quite sensible about this one.

Probably best known for his parodies of songs by Madonna and Michael Jackson, “Weird Al” Yankovic has enjoyed quite the career is the biggest-selling comedy recording artist of all time. A five-time Grammy winner, his 2014 release ‘Mandatory’ Fun was the first comedy album in history to debut at #1 on Billboard’s Top 200. He has also popped up in a host of movies, shorts, and TV series, either as himself or other characters, and might be best known for indie comedy movie ‘UHF’, which was released in 1989.

“When my last movie ‘UHF’ came out in 1989, I made a solemn vow to my fans that I would release a major motion picture every 33 years, like clockwork. I’m very happy to say we’re on schedule,” says Yankovic in a statement. “And I am absolutely thrilled that Daniel Radcliffe will be portraying me in the film. I have no doubt whatsoever that this is the role future generations will remember him for.”

“Wearing the Hawaiian shirt is a huge responsibility that I don’t take lightly, and I’m honored to finally share with the world the absolutely 100 percent unassailably true story of Weird Al’s depraved and scandalous life,” says Radcliffe, who seems thrilled at the opportunity.

“When Weird Al first sat me down against my will and told me his life story, I didn’t believe any of it, but I knew that we had to make a movie about it,” Appel adds.

Radcliffe is definitely not the first person we’d have imagined playing Yankovic, but he has certainly thrown himself into every out-there movie role he’s picked since he hung up his wand. He’s played such unusual characters as a farting corpse (in ‘Swiss Army Man’), a man with pistols bolted to his hands (‘Guns Akimbo’) and Igor (‘Victor Frankenstein’). He’ll next show up as a billionaire obsessed with a hidden treasure in ‘The Lost City’, which arrives in theaters on March 25. The Yankovic film doesn’t have a confirmed release date yet, but it’ll debut on the Roku Channel.

  • Watch ‘Harry Potter’ Movies in Order

    Harry Potter and Newt Scamander
    Warner Bros.

With the new ‘Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts‘ currently playing on HBO Max, we thought now would be a perfect time to look back on the magical franchise and its spin-off series, ‘Fantastic Beasts,’ which has a third installment entitled ‘Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore‘ scheduled to open in theaters on April 15th.

Here are all the movies from the Harry Potter Universe. From ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them‘ to ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2’. Which Harry Potter movie is your favorite?

‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ (2016)

    Newt Scamander
    Warner Bros.

Were it not an extension of one of the most popular movie franchises of all time, “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” may well have been a franchise killer. This prequel fails to conjure the magic of the other films. Sure, the titular beats are a hoot, as is Eddie Redmayne‘s soft-spoken protagonist. But the story is a real slog, making the prospect of four sequels a hard pill to swallow.

‘Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald’ (2018)

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” came into the franchise on slightly shaky feet. Not only was the first’s reception mixed-to-lukewarm, there was also a swirl of controversy around the casting (and continued employment) of Johnny Depp as the titular dark wizard. (When J.K. Rowling has to issue a statement on Twitter, you know it’s a big deal.)

So it’s a relief to say that the sequel is a total blast, an ornate, appropriately epic follow-up that feels like an honest-to-goodness part of the franchise (and not some weird side quest, like the first one did). Eddie Redmayne, as the twitchy Newt Scamander, endears more than annoys this time around, and Jude Law as Sexy Young Dumbledore is a welcome addition. (Also, critics be damned, Depp is terrific.) Darker, stranger, and more pointedly political, even if you weren’t a fan of the first, this should cast its spell on you.

‘Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore’ (2022)

Once again directed by David Yates, the movie follows Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) and his friends as they aid Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) in stopping his former lover, Gellert Grindelwald (Mads Mikkelsen) from taking over both the Wizarding World and the world of Muggles.

The result is an entertaining conclusion to an otherwise pointless spinoff series that never quite recaptures the magic of the ‘Harry Potter’ films but does feature strong performances from Jude Law, Mads Mikkelsen, Dan Fogler, and Alison Sudol.

The movie begins in 1932, where Newt Scamander (Redmayne) is helping a Qilin give birth, which is a magical creature with precognitive abilities. Credence Barebone (Ezra Miller) soon arrives and kidnaps the newborn so the evil Gellert Grindelwald (Mikkelsen) can use it in his plan to take over both the Wizarding and Muggle worlds. Unbeknownst to Grindelwald, the Qilin had twins, and now Newt must keep the sibling’s existence a secret.

‘Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone’ (2001)

Harry Potter, Ron and Hermoine from the first Harry Potter movie
    Warner Bros.

The original Harry Potter was great fun for its time, but it doesn’t exactly hold up to what came later. The franchise was still at its most innocent and family-friendly here. It’s a solid adaptation of the book, but there’s definitely a spark that’s missing.

‘Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets’ (2002)

Daniel Radcliffe and David Bradley in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets movie
    Warner Bros.

The second entry in the series is a definite improvement over the first. It’s got a more compelling mystery, some memorable new characters (like Kenneth Branagh‘s self-absorbed Gilderoy Lockhart) and delves more deeply into the history of Lord Voldemort. Despite all this, there’s a certain spark in the later movies that isn’t present under director Chris Columbus.

‘Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban’ (2004)

Gary Oldman as Sirius Black in the Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban movie
    Warner Bros.

As much as the series seemed to get better and better with each new installment, in the end no “Harry Potter” movie managed to outdo “Prisoner of Azkaban.” The third in the series, “Azkaban” was also the first to show moviegoers what was really possible with this universe. It’s a much darker, funnier and more visually stunning take on the source material than what we got with the slavishly faithful first two films. That’s the benefit of bringing a director as talented as Alfonso Cuaron aboard. He elevated every facet of the series during his brief time at Hogwarts.

‘Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire’ (2005)

Daniel Radcliffe in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire movie
    Warner Bros.

Goblet of Fire” is one of the longest (and most beloved) books in the series, and more than with any of the other adaptations, you can really feel this one straining to cram in all the important beats. It’s hard not to feel frustrated at seeing so many big moments (like the Quidditch World Cup) glossed over here. Even so, there’s plenty of enjoyable material left, from hormonal teen wizards to a rousing dragon battle to the debut of Ralph Fiennes as Voldemort.
    19563

‘Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix’ (2007)

Daniel Radcliffe in the Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix movie
    Warner Bros.

Despite being based on the longest book in the series, “Order of the Phoenix” does a much better job than “Goblet of Fire” when it comes to streamlining the source material. It was also the darkest chapter in the series to date, with many of the franchise regulars rising to the challenge. This sequel also introduces some of the best characters in the series, from the spacey Luna Lovegood to villains so evil you love to hate them like Bellatrix Lestrange and Dolores Umbridge.
    24593

‘Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince’ (2009)

Daniel Radcliffe and Michael Gambon in the Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince movie
    Warner Bros.

The “Harry Potter” series is one of those rare cases where the quality generally improves over time, and that definitely held true for the sixth entry. “The Half-Blood Prince” is the last movie to explore Harry, Ron and Hermione’s time at Hogwarts before everything goes south. More than most, it manages to balance a grim tone with a sly sense of humor and moments of whimsy. The movie also goes a long way towards humanizing supporting characters like Dumbledore and Draco Malfoy.
    27063

‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1’ (2010)

Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson in the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1 movie
    Warner Bros.

The penultimate chapter in the main “Harry Potter” saga, “Deathly Hallows – Part 1” pushes the story in an even darker and more dramatic direction. This sequel puts Harry, Ron and Hermione on the run, with the tone and visual style becoming grittier and more frenetic as a result. It doesn’t end particularly well given the choice to split the novel into two parts, but it still offers a very satisfying ride.
    30102

‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2’ (2011)

Daniel Radcliffe in the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 movie
    Warner Bros.

The “Harry Potter” movies reached their dramatic climax with this epic and emotionally satisfying final chapter. As with its predecessor, “Part 2” suffers a bit from having one story broken into two halves. Even so, it features so of the best moments in the series as well as some engrossing, emotionally charged acting from the franchise regulars. This is a movie designed to have you nonstop ugly crying for about the last hour.

  • Steve Buscemi, Daniel Radcliffe on Miracle Workers Season 3

Steve Buscemi, Daniel Radcliffe on Miracle Workers Season 3

    9PRqLlQb

The upcoming season of ‘Miracle Workers’ takes the cast to the 1840s, which means we get Western-style comedy. Cast members Steve Buscemi, Daniel Radcliffe, Geraldine Viswanathan and Karan Soni talked with us about this new season.

First up, Steve Buscemi and Daniel Radcliffe talk about the advantages of working on an anthology series.

Moviefone: Steve, can you explain to people who may not know what is an anthology series?

Steve Buscemi: Very good question. So it’s a series where each season is different from each other, but what’s the same about it is that we have the same cast. So on our show, the first setting was in heaven. That was the first season. I played God. Dan played an angel. Second season was the dark ages. I played a shit shoveler. Dan played a crown prince and this season we’re on the Oregon Trail. So it’s a Western. And in this season, Dan and I have the most to do together than previous seasons, which I think we were both very happy about. I play an outlaw who’s on the run, trying to evade the law. Dan plays a pastor who was just trying to save his town from starvation and to get them to better pastures and Oregon. We somehow meet up and become a team to try and get there.

MF: Yeah. I was just talking to Geraldine and Karan and talking about how Benny the Teen is really their GPS.

Buscemi: It may not have been the wisest thing to use Benny as their guide. I mean, he is a bit of a con man, but he has been around and he knows how to ford a river and he knows how to get over a mountain. So, yeah. But really he’s a very selfish guy and he’s just really trying to evade the law and maybe get revenge on his gang who left him for dead.

MF: Daniel, and the Reverend when he discovers that their GPS is really an outlaw. He’s not really happy about it, but everybody else in his town, they’re thrilled. They’re overjoyed. I found that hilarious.

Daniel Radcliffe: Yeah. Well, I think they all know that, yes, he is a more murderous GPS and less to be trusted than a normal one, but they also recognize that he is their only way, and he is the only man who has the skills to get them to Oregon. At that point, my character is still so morally rigid that he’s like, “No, we can’t be led to Oregon if it’s by this person who is very unholy.” And that’s one of the first compromises Zeke learns he has to make on the trail is that actually, it’s better to go with this guy than not get there at all. I think that’s sort of one of the first turning points for him.

MF: What is the reverend’s backstory?

Radcliffe: He was an orphan growing up in the UK in England, who became obsessed with the idea of America at some point growing up over there because it represented a lot of the idea that America sort of represented a social mobility that particularly at that time was absolutely not available in England, would have drawn him over. And he’s made it his new home, and now he’s become the most ardent patriot and believer in America, the idea of America, than sort of anyone else in the town.

MF: This next question, I guess, is both of you because both of you, for instance, Daniel, you did many Harry Potter movies where you played the same character throughout. Steve, you played the same character through the run of Boardwalk Empire. You’re on your third season here. We just talked about how it’s an anthology series, completely different characters. What are the pros and cons to you about this series compared to something that’s not an anthology series? I can start with you, Daniel.

Radcliffe: I would just say, to me, it’s mostly advantages. As an actor, I love getting to do something different all the time and getting to keep it fresh in that way. I think the only thing that you can say is a disadvantage sometimes is that you get to the end of the season just being like, “Oh, I’ve just figured this character out just in time to never play him again.” But the same thing happens with plays in theater. You figure it out just at the end, so it’s the nature of it. And I definitely am a real fan of just keeping it changing. It’s great for me.

    MF: And Steve?

    Buscemi:
I think we’re blessed that we get to work together each season and yet play different characters. I see it as mostly an advantage, but I do agree with Dan. At the end, I mean, it’s always hard to shed a character that you really enjoy. But I look forward to hopefully getting another season and it being a totally different situation and a different character.

MF: So Daniel, the first season Miracle Workers was from Simon Rich’s novel. And the second season, I believe, was from a short story of his. Where did the idea for this season come from?

Radcliffe: I’ve heard that the second season was from a short story as well. That was news to me when I heard that, which is probably just a failing on my part. But the third series is completely the brainchild of Dan Mirk and Robert Padnick. Dan has been working on the show since the very beginning and Robert worked on the last season, but Simon sort of stepped aside this season and they took over the actual show running, and so it came from their glorious brains. And I think probably, Robert and Dan I think are both interested in historical stuff and Robert also leans quite dark in his sense of humor as well. So this just was the perfect setting for them.

MF: Steve, what is it about the historical Oregon Trail story that we’ve all learned about that lends itself to this humor?

Buscemi: Well, I mean, I was surprised that some of the humans that they found in this particularly horrible thing that happens later in the season when we have to cross a mountain, and it’s cold and everybody’s starving. It leads to some pretty horrific choices. And it’s funny. I just think the different cast of characters just lends itself to great stories and relationships. And what I love about all three seasons is that these characters are up against great odds, and they figure out that the only way that they’re going to beat the odds is if they work together. Sometimes they don’t want to work with the person that they’re next to, but they somehow figure it out, and that’s what I love about it. So it’s still, to me has, even though it touches on some dark themes, overall, it still has a positive message.

MF: And Daniel, this series is just hilarious. It’s really funny. I’m just wondering how many takes our ruined because you don’t keep a straight face?

Radcliffe: Generally, I have gotten much better at that, but I would say that there’s at least one scene in episode three that they have to cut away from me very, very quickly because I couldn’t. I think they got one take where John Bass said the line that he said, and I managed to keep it together for two seconds, and that was enough time for them to then cut out of it. But every other time I laughed and ruined it. So I’m very glad they found a way around it. Laughing on set is both the best and worst thing because it is incredibly funny. But at the same time, when you were aware that, oh no, you’re really ruining this. They need this shot to work. It is also very, very stressful.

MF: Steve, this was shot under pandemic protocol. I think I would just be giddy from being around people again.

Buscemi: It was very surreal. This is the first job that both Dan and I did during, back and we weren’t back yet. We shot this during the pandemic. And so it was very surreal to see the crew in masks and we were wearing masks if we weren’t on camera, but it was great to be outdoors. I mean, if I had to be working this, because of the subject matter and because of the way they did it, and also production was very super aware of the challenges, and we were tested all the time. So the protocols were in place and we did it. And at the end of it, we felt really proud and good that we were able to achieve so much during these challenging times. And you’re right, it felt good to be with people. It felt great to be with people.

Next, Geraldine Viswanathan and Karan Soni talk about their characters for this season.

Moviefone: Hi, you guys. Geraldine, explain to me and for people who may not understand, what is an anthology series?

Geraldine Viswanathan: An anthology series is, we switch it up each season, so there’s no … An anthology. Yeah, it’s like … How do you define anthology?

Karan Soni: It’s the same cast but different characters, and you can watch each season like its own season. Not to mansplain here, but I just got in there.

MF: Yeah. I think that’s very interesting because, for instance, if you’re acting in a regular series, and you’re in your third season, you’ve developed your same character now for your third season. But for you guys, you are playing completely different characters every season. Geraldine, do you see any connection between your characters from season to season, although they’re completely different?

Viswanathan: I do. I do think that each season is set in a world where things are bad, where things are run poorly or things just aren’t working. It’s kind of twisted and backwards, and I think that my character always kind of comes in as the eyes of the audience, and is kind of that modern perspective of why are things this way, and how can they be better? How can we work together to make things better? I think, yeah, I’m always sort of frustrated by the state of the world around me, especially as we go in history, and I’m the female lead of the show. I think it’s always … that gets frustrating. So she’s sort of always the eyes, the audience’s way in.

MF: Karan, for you, what has this experience been like, three seasons of completely different character?

Soni: Oh my gosh, it’s been one of the best jobs I think I’ve ever had, because one, it’s creatively very fulfilling. It’s always different, but we get to work with … I love all the actors I get to work with, we all really genuinely get along, we hang out outside of work. So that is amazing, and then the fact that we get to show different skill sets and try different things every year is amazing. And yeah, so it just feels like the ultimate dream because it’s a TV show, so it’s some sense of something that you can look forward to every year, which is rare in Hollywood, to be like, “Oh, do Miracle Workers this year.” And yet it’s different, and we get to try and do different things all the time, and I feel like we only have grown closer as a cast every year. So, I feel like by season 11, we’ll just be living in the same house with each other.

MF: I hope there’s a season 11, I find the series so interesting. What is the buildup like for you, waiting to find out what the next season’s going to be about? How soon do you know?

Soni: We don’t really know. We don’t really know, although if we ask, they do sometimes tell us. But yeah, we don’t really know a lot, and then it’s always right before the table read, you get the script and they’re like, “We’re going to do the first table read,” that I’m always very nervous. Because it’s so unusual, because normally you would either audition for a role or even if you’re offered a role, you would get to read the role before anything, and this time you’re sort of doing a table read to something you didn’t read or seek out or talk to the director about, or writer about, and they’ve just created it for you. And so, it can be initially quite like, there’s a lot of butterflies in the beginning to be like, “Can I do this? How am I going to make it different? What am I going to do?” And all of that stuff. And then it gets very fun and exciting, once you get into the groove of it.

MF: Geraldine, talking about the creator, Simon Rich, Miracle Workers was based on his novel, and then Miracle Workers, Dark Ages was based on a short story. So Miracle Workers, Oregon Trail, where did that come from?

Viswanathan: Good question, I’m not sure. But we did this season, Simon Rich didn’t work on this season, his right-hand man, Daniel Mirk and Robert Padnick, who’ve been on the show alongside of him for each season, they took over this time, and they pitched the idea of Oregon Trail. So I don’t know if it came from one of his …

Soni: Yeah, I don’t know if this one did because he wasn’t writing on this one. Yeah, I think this was a original idea, but I could be wrong.

MF: Geraldine, talk to me about Prudence Aberdeen’s background.

Viswanathan: She’s a woman of the 1840s. She’s married to Todd Aberdeen, who’s the wealthy man in town. And I think that’s kind of all we know about her backstory. Yeah, she’s just trying on everything, she’s like, “Who do I want to be?” She’s in that point of her life.

MF: Talking about Todd, he’s very needy, super needy, but I love the way Prudence, and she’s not hiding it, when she is not around him, she’s a modern woman. But then, when she’s with him, she caters to him as if she’s an 1800s wife.

Viswanathan: Yes. Yes, exactly. She’s trying to hold face at the beginning and trying to be a good wife and pretend to like him at all, because this situation is beneficial to her. But she very quickly is not able to hold up the charade anymore, and she kind of openly scorns him to his face, because he’s the worst. Yeah.

MF: Karan, how about you, backstory for the Gunslinger?

Soni: Yeah. The Gunslinger, he just grew up with gunslingers, I figured, and he always wanted to be that sort of hero. And then he just set his target on Steve’s character, and he has been chasing him for years and years and years and years and has not caught him. So he’s not very good at his job, but he really wants to try to be better. And then this season, we see where all that leads him, when he finally comes face to face with the person he’s tried to hunt down all these years. It sounds like a gritty drama, I love it.

MF: And it’s not, it’s a comedy. And my next question is, how does the Oregon Trail, something you really wouldn’t think of, lend itself so well to comedy?

Soni: Well, there’s something very funny about just horses and oxen peeing and pooping. And then these little fools who are just, with no GPS, like the poster says, making their way across this crazy terrain. And you’re like, “You’re all going to die.” But it’s fun to watch them, ignorant and blissful, before they walk into their death.

MF: They have a GPS, they have Benny the Teen.

Soni: Exactly, oh my gosh. Exactly, that’s their GPS.

MF: Geraldine, while you’re shooting, is it as funny as what we see finally? And how do you keep a straight face, how do you not break?

Viswanathan: Well, I often do break, and it’s a problem, because we’ve got short days, we’ve got to get the shot. But sometimes Jon Bass is on top of me and farting on top of me, and it’s really hard not to laugh. That’s really an absurd situation that we’ve all found ourselves in, especially after COVID with not speaking to people for so long, and then suddenly being on set in this absurd set, I think it just felt absurd. So, I break all the time, and I’m actually open to advice on how to not break.

MF: Maybe for the next season, maybe they will give you some advice.

Viswanathan: Hopefully. I’ll have to cut a wire in my brain or something.

‘Miracle Workers: Oregon Trail’ is on Wednesdays on TBS.

  • 11 Things You Never Knew About ‘Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince’

11 Things You Never Knew About ‘Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince’

    Warner Bros.

It’s been ten years since the Harry Potter saga delivered one of its most pivotal sequels. “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” pushed this beloved fantasy saga in a darker direction, complete with a tragic death and new insight into the origins of the wizarding world’s greatest villain. Celebrate this milestone by learning more about the making of the sixth Potter movie.

    1. “The Half-Blood Prince” is the third-longest movie in the series, falling behind only “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” and “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.”

    2. The actor who plays the 11-year-old version of Tom Riddle, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, is the nephew of Voldemort actor Ralph Fiennes.

    Warner Bros.

    3. Though roughly 7,000 girls auditioned for the role of Lavender Brown, Jessie Cave was cast despite not attending these auditions. Fortunately for her, she had a recommendation straight from Emma Watson.

    4. This is the first film in the series not to feature any Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom scenes, despite the fact that Professor Snape is revealed to have taken over the class early in the film.

    Warner Bros.

    5. Director David Yates said the film’s color and lighting were heavily inspired by the work of Dutch painter Rembrandt. Fittingly, this is the only film in the series to be nominated for the Best Cinematography Oscar.

    6. While Yates has directed every “Harry Potter” and “Fantastic Beasts” movie since “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix,” WB almost went with a different director for “The Half-Blood Prince.” They approached Terry Gilliam, but Gilliam refused, having been passed over to direct “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” years before.

    Warner Bros.

    7. Kevin McKidd was approached to play werewolf villain Fenrir Greyback, but had to decline due to his other commitments. McKidd has since said he doesn’t regret turning down the part, as it would have terrified his children.

    8. Bill Nighy was cast as Minister for Magic Rufus Scrimgeour in “The Half-Blood Prince,” but after his scene was cut, Nighy instead made his series debut in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1.”

    Warner Bros.

    9. The set used for Professor Slughorn’s office is a modified version of the same one used for the Trophy Room in “The Goblet of Fire” and the Room of Requirement in “The Order of the Phoenix.”

    10. Actor Alan Rickman admitted to feeling a perverse sense of glee over Snape’s role in Dumbledore’s death scene, comparing it to the climax of “Die Hard” and pointing out how his character got to be on the opposite end of a battle involving one character falling to their death.

    Warner Bros.

    11. Narcissa Malfoy actress Helen McCrory was originally cast as Bellatrix Lestrange in “The Order of the Phoenix,” but left the project after becoming pregnant.

There will be a new face in the “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” interactive special.

Daniel Radcliffe has signed on for the upcoming Netflix event, Deadline reports. He joins returning stars Ellie Kemper, Tituss Burgess, Jane Krakowski, and Carol Kane in what will be the streamer’s first interactive comedy special. Details about Radcliffe’s character remain under wraps.

Radcliffe came to fame as a child as the star of the Harry Potter series and has gone on to star in numerous projects on the screen and stage over the years. His recent films include “Beast of Burden” and “Jungle.” In addition, he now stars in the TBS series “Miracle Workers,” which was recently renewed for a second season.

We’ll see the actor in the special when it premieres on Netflix in 2020. It will take Kimmy (Kemper) on her “biggest adventure yet,” per Deadline, with the story in the hands of viewers. It’ll also be a reunion, given that “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” ended with Season 4 earlier this year.

The special comes from Universal Television and will be created by Tina Fey and Robert Carlock, creators of the original series. Fey and Carlock will also serve as executive producers of the special, alongside Jeff Richmond, Sam Means, David Miner, and Meredith Scardino.

  • 13 Things You Never Knew About ‘Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban’ on its 15th Anniversary

13 Things You Never Knew About ‘Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban’ on its 15th Anniversary

    Warner Bros.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” marked a major turning point for the franchise when it hit theaters 15 years ago. Not only did it bring a new visionary director and newfound level of critical acclaim, it also transformed the series from a whimsical, family-friendly story of child wizards to a darker story about a young man confronting his terrible destiny. So celebrate this big milestone by learning more about the making of the third movie in the Harry Potter series.

    1. After Chris Columbus declined to direct a third Harry Potter movie, WB pursued a number of potential replacements before settling on Alfonso Cuarón. That lineup included M. Night Shyamalan, Guillermo del Toro, Marc ForsterCallie Khouri and even series veteran Kenneth Branagh.

    Warner Bros.

    2. “The Prisoner of Azakaban” greatly expanded the scope of Hogwarts and the number of castle landmarks seen on-screen. Creator J.K. Rowling gave Cuarón a certain amount of freedom in that regard, but she did veto the idea of adding a graveyard, as she feared it would spoil upcoming books in the series.

    3. Ian McKellen was offered the role of Albus Dumbledore following Richard Harris‘ death. He turned it down, not wanting to be faced with the pressure of bringing a second iconic wizard character to life.

    4. Peter O’Toole was another major contender for the Dumbledore role, though concerns about his age and the cost of insuring the role caused the studio to look elsewhere.

    Warner Bros.

    5. Michael Gambon eventually won the Dumbledore part, despite the fact that he had never read the books and purposely avoided reading them for the remainder of the series.

    6. The rival seeker who battles Harry for possession of the Golden Snitch during the Quidditch match is actually Cedric Diggory. Cedric is played by Joe Livermore in “The Prisoner of Azkaban,” but the part was recast when Cedric took on a much more prominent role in “The Goblet of Fire.”

    Warner Bros.

    7. The Honeydukes set is a modified version of the same set used for Olivander’s wand shop in “The Sorcerer’s Stone” and Flourish & Blotts in “The Chamber of Secrets.”

    8. Dudley Dursley actor Harry Melling was nearly replaced after losing a significant amount of weight in between the second and third films. Instead, Melling was given a fat suit for “Prisoner of Azkaban.”

    9. “The Prisoner of Azkaban” is unusual in the series in that it features several shots of practical illusionist tricks. Illusionist Paul Kieve was hired to serve as a consultant for the film and coached several of the actors.

    Warner Bros.

    10. “The Prisoner of Azakaban” is the final film in the series with a score composed by John Williams.

    11. It’s also the final film in the series to be released on VHS.

    Warner Bros.

    12. WB maintained strict secrecy surrounding the project, including referring to it by the codename “Radiator Blues” during post-production and providing night vision goggles to movie theater ushers to help combat digital piracy.

    13. Despite being one of the most critically acclaimed entries in the Harry Potter series, “The Prisoner of Azkaban” is also the lowest-grossing of the eight. Huh.

  • Daniel Radcliffe Addresses Wolverine Rumors, Possible Harry Potter Reboot

Daniel Radcliffe Addresses Wolverine Rumors, Possible Harry Potter Reboot

    TBS

Daniel Radcliffe has a now show, “Miracle Workers” on TBS, so of course that’s the right time to ask him about potential Harry Potter reboots and that crazy internet rumor that he’s the new Wolverine.

The Internet buzz prompted artwork like this, by Bosslogic, with Radcliffe’s Wolverine featuring some Potter-esque lightning-bolt slashes.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/BtvXzVcngtl/

In a Wired video (in which he also explained that no, he and Elijah Wood are not related), Radcliffe joked, “There’s going to be a new Wolverine movie, in which it starts off with Hugh Jackman being put into a hot wash. And then when he comes out, it’s me. So yes, I’m very happy to announce that here.”

Talking with IGN, he elaborated it could be “a comedy where Wolverine has got tiny? And now I’m not as equipped to fight but I’m still really sharp? That would be great…. Daniel Radcliffe is… Baby Wolf!’ I’d actually be really happy with that. I don’t think we have helped the issue with this interview. All I’m doing now is thinking of taglines. But there’s no truth in it.”

Still, he’s game: “If some super talented writer wants to write Baby Wolf and turn it into a massive franchise, I’m in.”

There’s also no truth, he says to rumors that he was in “The LEGO Movie 2.” “I was not cut out of the LEGO Movie [sequel], if we’re quashing rumors,” he said. “The producers of LEGO said they had wanted to get Harry Potter in there and hadn’t, they didn’t get him in for some reason, and that turned into ‘Dan Radcliffe was cut from the LEGO Movie.’ And I was like, ‘I wasn’t! I wasn’t in it!’ I would’ve loved to be cut from the LEGO Movie. I didn’t have the chance!”

He also anticipated that we’ll see a new Harry Potter at some point, telling IGN, “I’m sure there will be some other version of it; I know I’m not the last Harry Potter I’m gonna see in my lifetime. We’ve already got a few more,” he said, referring to Jamie Parker and Gareth Reeves have already played the role in the play “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.”

“It will be interesting to see how long those films stay… it feels like there’s a sacredness around them at the moment, but that’ll go, the shine will wear off at some point,” he said. “It’ll be interesting if they reboot them and just do the films again or do a series; I’m fascinated to watch.”

“Miracle Workers,” in which Radcliffe plays an angel trying to stop God (Steve Buscemi) from destroying humanity, premieres tonight on TBS.
