    Though it already has an impressive cast, new DC Studios/HBO comic book-based series ‘Lanterns’ appears to have gotten an extra shot of dramatic power.

    According to reporter Jeff Sneider, Laura Linney –– who worked with the new show’s co-creator Chris Mundy on ‘Ozark’ is aboard the show.

    No official confirmation has emerged yet, but Sneider is already speculating that she could be playing Carol Ferris, the love of Lantern Hal Jordan’s life (that role is being brought to screens by Kyle Chandler) and someone who ultimately –– in the comics, at least –– becomes the villain known as Star Sapphire.

    That’s all still rumor and conjecture at this point, but we do know that Aaron Pierre is co-starring alongside Chandler as fellow Lantern John Stewart.

    What’s the story of ‘Green Lantern’ in comics form?

    Created in its first incarnation (a Lantern named Alan Scott) in 1940 by Martin Nodell and Bill Finger, the concept of the ‘Green Lantern’ comics is that of a super-powered, police force, battling evil doers with rings that allow them to channel energy into different forms. There are many Lanterns, who patrol the known and unknown universe.

    ‘Green Lantern’s history on screen has been seriously mixed. Though different takes on the character have flourished in animated movies and series, their live-action counterparts have had less luck. Ryan Reynolds played the Hal Jordan version in a 2011 movie that didn’t triumph at the box office, and there have been fleeting glimpses on the small screen.

    Even Zack Snyder didn’t manage to realize his chosen Lantern –– John Stewart –– in his mammoth Snyder Cut of ‘Justice League’. Despite shooting a cameo with Wayne T. Carr as Stewart, Warners asked him to remove the character because of the studio’s own plans. In the end, Snyder swapped in Martian Manhunter.

    And the show had been in development before Gunn and Safran made their big DC Studios announcement. Back in 2020, ‘Pride and Prejudice and Zombies’ Seth Grahame-Smith hopped aboard to write and run what HBO Max (as the streaming service was then called) was picturing its most expensive series to date, a space-set ‘Green Lantern’ drama whose focus would be the Alan Scott and Guy Gardner iterations of the character among the first and most popular versions.

    ‘Lanterns’ will follow the Chandler and Pierre characters, as new recruit Stewart and Lantern legend Jordan are described in the latest official synopsis as “two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.”

    So, think ‘True Detective’ meets ‘Green Lantern’…

    Here’s Chris Mundy on the tone for the show:

    “From the start, our driving force has been to deliver a layered drama –– rooted in nuanced storytelling and rich world building –– that balances tension and mystery with honest, authentic emotion. The goal is to create something that feels timeless and grounded without sacrificing the magic of the source material.”

    But there will be some powerful antagonism involved, as Ulrich Thomsen is playing Sinestro a former Green Lantern who turned rogue and is described as ruthless yet charming.

    His manipulative nature drives his enduring obsession with his former mentee, Hal Jordan. The character was created by John Broome and Gil Kane and first appeared in the comic book “Green Lantern, Volume 2, #56” released in 1961.

    The cast also includes ‘No Country for Old Man’s Kelly Macdonald, ’12 Years a Slave’ actor Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan (who appeared in (‘The Night Of’), Jason Ritter and the aforementioned Thomsen.

    In breaking news, Deadline brings word that Chris Coy is also part of the ensemble.

    In a guest starring role, Coy will be the new character of ‘Waylon Sanders,’ an intelligent survivor… or a nervous truck driver. Age and real name unknown, he’s unbound by the laws of nature.

    More recently, we learned that Nathan Fillion would be bringing his Guy Gardner character –– another Lantern –– to the show, following his debut in James Gunn‘s ‘Superman’ this summer.

    Mundy, whose resume includes stints on Netflix’s ‘Ozark’ and HBO’s ‘True Detective: Night Country’, is running the new series, working alongside ‘Watchmen’s Damon Lindelof and DC comics writer Tom King (whose ‘Supergirl’ comic is the basis for the new movie featuring the character).

    And James Hawes, who has worked on series including ‘Black Mirror’ ‘Snowpiercer’ and Season 1 of ‘Slow Horses,’ will direct the first two episodes.

    Here’s what Hawes has had to say to Collider about his approach to the show:

    “There is a very particular humor that they brought to this. It’s very rooted in a way that I like to think we achieve with ‘Slow Horses,’ that I achieve with things like my ‘Black Mirror’ [episodes], and yet there is a rich vein of humor running through it. I’m such a huge fan of Damon [Lindelof] and Chris [Mundy] and the writing that they’ve done in the past… You always find a scene or two that you think, ‘I cant wait to be stood beside the camera and the cast, directing this scene on the day.’ “

    He’s not alone –– ‘Watchmen’ veteran Stephen Williams, ‘Under the Bridge’s Geeta Vasant Patel, and former ‘Ozark’ director Alik Sakharov are also handling episodes.

    Since they oversee the whole DC Studios arm, filmmaker Gunn and producer Peter Safran are executive producers alongside Ron Schmidt.

    ‘Ozark’ is just one of this talented actor’s many credits.

    She’s enjoyed a healthy career on screens big and small, appearing in movies such as ‘Nocturnal Animals,’ ‘Sully,’ ‘Mr. Holmes,’ ‘The Fifth Estate,’ ‘The Exorcism of Emily Rose,’ ‘Mystic River,’ ‘The Savages,’ (for which she was Oscar nominated) ‘Love Actually,’ ‘You Can Count on Me,’ ‘The Truman Show’ and ‘Congo.’

    On TV, her roles include ‘Tales of the City,’ ‘The Big C,’ ‘John Adams’ and ‘Frasier.’

    When will ‘Lanterns’ be on screens?

    We’re still waiting to learn when HBO will premiere the show, though it is reportedly targeting an early 2026 launch.

    A new week, a new writer for the ‘Star Wars’ movie that seems to be stuck in a Sarlacc’s gut of development hell.

    Yes, the movie currently known as ‘Star Wars: New Jedi Order,’ which was confirmed with much fanfare at Star Wars Celebration a long time ago (well, April 7th, 2023) in a galaxy far, far away (er, London), has found yet another write to work on its script.

    George Nolfi, whose resume includes 2004’s ‘Ocean’s Twelve,’ is, according to The Hollywood Reporter, now crafting a fresh draft of the movie, which will follow the further adventures of sequel trilogy stalwart Rey, played by Daisy Ridley.

    Documentarian Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, who popped up on Disney/Lucasfilm’s radar after working on an episode of Marvel’s Disney+ series ‘Ms. Marvel,’ remains on board to direct.

    What’s the story of ‘New Jedi Order’?

    The new story is said to take place 15 years after the events seen in 2019’s ‘The Rise of Skywalker,’ with Ridley’s character now a mentor to a new crop of Jedis.

    You can imagine that it won’t be an easy task fraught with danger, but it might be easier than actually getting the movie made.

    ‘Lost,’ ‘The Leftovers’ and ‘Watchmen’ writer Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson were the initial duo on the project, working on it before Obaid-Chinoy was brought on.

    By the time Ridley was revealed as returning, ‘Peaky Blinders’ creator Steven Knight was tapping away at the keyboard. But by October 2024, he was no longer on the project.

    What else has George Nolfi written?

    Nolfi is known for writing elevated thrillers across a variety of genres.

    He worked on two ‘Bourne’ action thrillers with Matt Damon (who, of course, was also a lead in Ocean’s Twelve’), before going on to make his directorial debut with ‘The Adjustment Bureau,’ a 2011 sci-fi thriller that starred the actor alongside Emily Blunt.

    Nolfi also directed and co-wrote 2020’s ‘The Banker,’ a period drama of race and finance that starred Anthony Mackie and Samuel L. Jackson, and then reunited with Mackie for 2024’s ‘Elevation,’ a postapocalyptic thriller.

    His credits also include TV series ‘Allegiance’ and other movies such as ‘Timeline,’ ‘The Sentinel’ and 2016’s ‘Spectral’.

    What else is in development for big screen ‘Star Wars’?

    Jon Favreau’s ‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’ is first among ‘Star Wars’ equals right now, having shot last year and now speeding through post-production for a release next year.

    ‘Mandalorian’ co-creator and fellow steward Dave Filoni is still putting the pieces together for his own film, and more recently, we learned that one with Shawn Levy in the director’s chair took a leap towards hyperspace thanks to Ryan Gosling entering talks to star.

    Jonathan Tropper, who collaborated with Levy on films such as ‘This is Where I Leave You’ and ‘The Adam Project,’ has been working on that script for over a year. Levy is also producing the feature via his 21 Laps banner, joining ‘Star Wars’ steward and Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy.

    The time period for the potential new offering is unknown, though it reportedly charts its own course and doesn’t feature anyone from the Skywalker saga, with the emphasis on this being a standalone adventure.

    Then there’s James Mangold’s film, which explores the origins of the Jedi and early force users and is awaiting a release date.

    And not forgetting Simon Kinberg, who was reported last November as working on his own planned trilogy.

    We’d guess that while Filoni (who promoted earlier this year to Chief Creative Officer at Lucasfilm) is still going full speed ahead on his movie, he’s also been busy figuring out a second season of ‘Ahsoka.’

    Here’s what he said about that:

    “I’m so well into that as well… I’ve been writing it, and I’m still the single writer on it, and so I’ve been enjoying doing that, but it’s a challenge, of course, and working some of these arcs through has been a challenge and making sure it’s all going to come out in a way that I think is exciting for fans. I know that they’re interested in where some of the things I developed in Season One. I’m pretty happy with it… Love working with Rosario [Dawson], so I can’t wait to get back to that.”

    Beyond those, there are several movies (and potential trilogies) which don’t seem to be moving forward and may have been scrapped altogether, including new potential movies from ‘The Last Jedi’s Rian Johnson (who is busy with his ‘Knives Out’ movies and may not wish to dip back into the toxic stew of ‘Star Wars’ fandom after the divisive reaction to his first effort) and ‘Wonder Woman’s Patty Jenkins, who had a much-touted ‘Rogue Squadron’ story of rebel pilots that appears to have had trouble leaving the development hanger.

    When will the next ‘Star Wars’ movie be in theaters?

    So far, only ‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’ has a confirmed release date, that being May 22nd, 2026.

    Disney and Lucasfilm do have an untitled ‘Star Wars’ movie on their release calendar for December 17th, 2027, so we’ll see which one of the other projects secures that berth –– right now, our guess is Levy’s.

    The details are truly falling into place for DC Studios/HBO’s ‘Green Lanterns’ comics-based TV series ‘Lanterns.’

    We learned last month that Kyle Chandler had entered talks to play one of the key lead roles, Lantern Corps member Hal Jordan, and he’s now signed a deal to star.

    Casting his co-star came down to final decision between Stephan James (‘Race’) and Aaron Pierre, who recently showed his bad-ass side in ‘Rebel Ridge’ on Netflix. And now we know that Pierre has won the role of John Stewart, Jordan’s fellow corpsman.

    It’s a much-anticipated role, since Pierre will be playing a character based on one of the States’ first black superheroes, and the show itself is a key part of DC Studios bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran’s strategy going forward.

    ‘Watchmen’ still stands as one of the most influential graphic novels of all time and has been a big challenge to adapt.

    It doesn’t help that original co-creator Alan Moore (who crafted the book with artist Dave Gibbons) is no fan of anyone trying to convert his work into a new medium.

    We can only imagine, then, that he’s busy conjuring a damning spell to thwart the latest effort, but he’s too late –– after being announced at last year’s Comic-Con, an animated, two-part movie called ‘Watchman: Chapter I’, based on the graphic novel is on the way (and has been in the works since at least 2021), with Matthew Rhys, Katee Sackhoff and Titus Welliver in the lead roles.

    What’s the story of the ‘Watchmen’ animated movie?

    The movie will once again bring to screens Moore and Gibbons’ story, published in 1986 and set in an alternative world in which costumed vigilantes are real. Inspired by Moore being unable to use some of DC’s big name characters, he created his own alternates and challenged the nature and morality of superhero storytelling.

    Rhys will voice Dan Dreiberg (aka Nite Owl), Sackhoff will voice Laurie Juspeczyk (aka Silk Spectre), while Welliver will voice Walter Kovacs (aka Rorschach).

    Troy Baker will voice Adrian Veidt (aka Ozymandias), while Michael Ceveris will voice Jonathan Osterman (aka Dr. Manhattan).

    Both parts of the movie have been adapted by ‘Babylon 5’ creator J. Michael Straczynski, though he has confirmed on social media that he’s not made huge changes to the scripts:

    ‘Watchmen’ has been targeted several times for adaptation, including by a variety of filmmakers who tried, but couldn’t make it happen; Terry Gilliam, David Hayter, Darren Aronofsky among them.

    Zack Snyder finally succeeded, with his (mostly) faithful live-action adaptation debuting in 2009 to mixed reviews and $185.3 million worldwide. It was supported by its own animation, a take on the graphic novel’s story-within-the-story ‘Tales of the Black Freighter’.

    Damon Lindelof won praise for his 2019 HBO series, which continues the story 30 years after the events of the graphic novel, drawing from the canon history but also going off in interesting new directions.

    When will ‘Watchmen: Chapter I’ be on screens?

    The first Chapter will debut on August 13th for digital purchase and on August 27th on 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray. ‘Watchmen Chapter II’ will be released in late 2024.

    After several years of development, and one big change in creative direction, ‘Lanterns’, adapting the ‘Green Lantern’ DC comics character, has scored a series order from HBO.

    It’ll be part of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Studios plan for a freshly intertwined set of movies and shows and was included in their big announcement last year.

    What’s the story of ‘Green Lantern’ in comics form?

    Created in its first incarnation (a Lantern named Alan Scott) in 1940 by Martin Nodell and Bill Finger, the concept of the ‘Green Lantern’ comics is that of a super-powered, police force, battling evil doers with rings that allow them to channel energy into different forms. There are many Lanterns, who patrol the known and unknown universe.

    ‘Green Lantern’s history on screen has been seriously mixed. Though different takes on the character have flourished in animated movies and series, their live-action counterparts have had less luck. Ryan Reynolds played the Hal Jordan version in a 2011 movie that didn’t triumph at the box office, and there have been fleeting glimpses on the small screen.

    Even Zack Snyder didn’t manage to realize his chosen Lantern –– John Stewart –– in his mammoth Snyder Cut of ‘Justice League’. Despite shooting a cameo with Wayne T. Carr as Stewart, Warners asked him to remove the character because of the studio’s own plans. In the end, Snyder swapped in Martian Manhunter.

    Gunn has Nathan Fillion playing the Guy Gardner incarnation in his ‘Superman’ movie, which lands on July 11th next year.

    And the show had been in development before Gunn and Safran made their big announcement. Back in 2020, ‘Pride and Prejudice and Zombies’ Seth Grahame-Smith hopped aboard to write and run what HBO Max (as the streaming service was then called) was picturing its most expensive series to date, a space-set ‘Green Lantern’ drama whose focus would be the Alan Scott and Guy Gardner iterations of the character among the first and most popular versions.

    ‘Lanterns’ will follow the Hal Jordan and John Stewart characters, as new recruit Stewart and Lantern legend Jordan are described in the latest official synopsis as “two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.”

    Who is working on ‘Lanterns’?

    Chris Mundy, whose resume includes stints on Netflix’s ‘Ozark’ and HBO’s ‘True Detective: Night Country’, is showrunner on the new series, working alongside ‘Watchmen’s Damon Lindelof and DC comics writer Tom King (whose ‘Supergirl’ comic is the basis for the new movie featuring the character).

    They’ve received the go-ahead for eight initial episodes in a straight-to-series order.

    Here’s what DC Studios bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran said about the news:

    “We’re thrilled to bring this seminal DC title to HBO with Chris, Damon and Tom at the helm. John Stewart and Hal Jordan are two of DC’s most compelling characters, and ‘Lanterns’ brings them to life in an original detective story that is a foundational part of the unified DCU we’re launching next summer with ‘Superman.’ ”

    When will ‘Lantern’ be on screens?

    HBO has yet to confirm a release date for the series. Since it has yet to be shot (or even cast), we wouldn’t expect it much before late 2025 or at some point in 2026.

  • Steven Knight Writing New ‘Star Wars’ Movie

    Cast your mind back a long time ago, to a galaxy far, far, awa…. Well, actually just a couple of days ago. That was when we brought two ‘Star Wars’ updates: one, that ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert were explaining their decision to direct an episode of incoming Disney+ series ‘Star Wars: Skeleton Crew’ and two, that Damon Lindelof (along with co-writer Justin Britt-Gibson) was no longer attached to the untitled, under wraps new ‘Star Wars’ movie that Lucasfilm has in development.

    We mentioned at the time that Above The Line, which broke the story, hadn’t heard who might replace the pair on the script, but Variety scooped the news that ‘Peaky Blinders’ creator Steven Knight, who has also worked extensively on the movie front, including writing ‘Eastern Promises’, ‘Locke’ and the Oscar-nominated ‘Spencer’, will be taking over.

    What is this new ‘Star Wars’ movie about?

    As of right now, Lucasfilm has been able to keep the details of this film behind rigorous blast shields, meaning we don’t know the plot of this one at all yet, or indeed when it’s set in the ‘Star Wars’ timeline.

    There’s some (New) hope that it might represent a move away from the established characters, i.e. zero mentions of the Skywalker family or their associated heroes and villains.

    And given that it was started by Lindelof and Britt-Gibson and will be continued (or re-drafted) by Knight, it certainly sounds like there’s an interesting angle to be found.

    Who else is involved in this new ‘Star Wars’ movie?

    Despite the change in writers, director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, a documentarian who has also worked on animated movies and shot episodes of ‘Ms. Marvel’ for Disney+, is still on board to call the shots. But again, she’s said nothing about what the movie might be, nor has Lucasfilm officially confirmed any of this.

    We’re expecting news about this (assuming it’s at a point where the company feels confident in announcing it) at Star Wars Celebration, which will run between April 7-10th in London.

    What else is going on with ‘Star Wars’

    Outside of the ever-expanding TV shows (‘The Mandalorian’ is back on our screens now and we can expect ‘Skeleton Crew’ and ‘Ahsoka’ for definite this year, plus the return of animated series ‘Star Wars Visions’ and the launch of fellow animation ‘Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures’), the forward momentum of the franchise has been lacking.

    On cinema screens, we haven’t seen a movie since ‘The Rise of Skywalker’ in 2019 as Disney and Lucasfilm pumped the brakes on their schedule.

    There are several movies in development still (even as the likes of Kevin Feige, Patty Jenkins and ‘Game of Thrones’ duo David Benioff and DB Weiss preceded Lindelof in the departure lounge), with Taika Waititi talking up his script and Rian Johnson still saying he’ll work on more once he’s finished another ‘Knives Out’ film.

  • ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ Directors Handled an Episode of ‘Star Wars: Skeleton Crew’

    A couple of weeks ago, Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert took to the stage of the Dolby theatre in Hollywood to claim several Oscars that they’d won for their film ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’, which of course led to speculation about what they’d do for a follow-up.

    When news broke yesterday via One Take News that the duo was involved with new ‘Star Wars’ series ‘Skeleton Crew’, some took it to mean that the quirky, unique duo were somehow “selling out’ by working on a Lucasfilm show.

    As it turns out, that’s not how it happened at all.

    Taking to Instagram, Kwan responded to those concerns. Here’s what he had to say:

    ”Lol, all of the people @ing us about getting sucked up by the ‘corporate machine’ can chill. These headlines are always misleading. Don’t worry. We aren’t working on a whole series; we guest directed one episode. Jon Watts approached us to do an episode a while ago (before ‘EEAAO’ even came out). We love Jon, love ‘Star Wars,’ love learning new tech, we love meeting new cast and crew, and we needed the days to keep our healthcare (!!!) so it was an easy yes. We shot it last year and had an incredible time working with the most talented cast and crew and I’m excited for you all to see it.”

    So, there you have it –– and let’s be honest, the idea of anything directed by the Daniels is something to anticipate. Kwan also specified that whatever the duo does next in the film realm, it’ll be an original project they create. We’re not sure why anyone would have expected the people behind ‘Swiss Army Man’ and ‘Everything Everywhere’ to jump wholeheartedly into the corporate world.

    What’s the story of ‘Skeleton Crew’?

    Developed by Watts and Jon Favreau and set in the same ‘Star Wars’ timeline as ‘The Mandalorian’, ‘Skeleton Crew’ has largely been under wraps, with only a few details getting out.

    The official logline for the series is sparse at this point: “‘Skeleton Crew’ tells the story of four kids who find themselves lost in in the vastness of the galaxy trying to find their way home” and we do know that Watts was working with ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ co-writer Christopher Ford on the scripts.

    Jude Law is starring in the series, though we don’t yet know who is playing the youngsters looking to find their way home.

    ‘Skeleton Crew’ should be hitting Disney+ this year.

    Damon Lindelof leaves the ‘Star Wars’ movie he was writing

    In less positive ‘Star Wars’ news, Above The Line brings word that Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson are no longer aboard the movie set in the galaxy far, far away that they had been writing.

    Lindelof offered a hint that he might have jumped (space)ship at the SXSW festival last week, where he said this to Slashfilm:

    ”I will just say, that for reasons that I can’t get into on this Sunday morning, on this day, the degree of difficulty is extremely, extremely, extremely high. If it can’t be great, it shouldn’t exist. That’s all I’ll say, because I have the same association with it as you do, which is, it’s the first movie I saw sitting in my dad’s lap, four years old, May of ‘77. I think it’s possible that sometimes when you hold something in such high reverence and esteem, you start to get in the kitchen and you just go, ‘Maybe I shouldn’t be cooking. Maybe I should just be eating.’ We’ll just leave it at that point.”

    Lindelof’s original attachment was exciting for genre fans, as the ‘Lost’ veteran had worked on ‘The Leftovers’ and ‘Watchmen’. And though his big screen work hasn’t been as warmly received (‘Star Trek: Into Darkness’, ‘Prometheus’ and ‘Cowboys & Aliens’ included), there was anticipation for how his and Britt-Gibson’s sensibilities might translate to ‘Star Wars’.

    Don’t go thinking that this marks another cancelled ‘Star Wars’ project as Disney and Lucasfilm struggle to get their cinematic universe in order. Above The Line’s story also mentions that Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (a documentary filmmaker who has worked in animation and directed episodes of ‘Ms. Marvel’ for Disney+) is still aboard to make the movie.

    A new writer is apparently involved in working on the script, though their identity is unknown at this time. And if it all works out, the cameras should be rolling in early 2024 ahead of a December 2025 release.

    What we do know is that Star Wars Celebration, the Disney-curated convention around all things ‘Star Wars’, is happening next month in London, and that’s traditionally where Lucasfilm has announced big new movies and TV series. So that’s where audiences should learn the fate of this new movie.

    Even that is no guarantee, though, as we’ve had a variety of big announcements –– films from Patty Jenkins or Kevin Feige, for example –– that have simply never come to pass, lost in a mire of conflicting schedules and long development.

    Other movies we’re still waiting for updates include Rian Johnson’s planned return to the ‘Star Wars’ universe (on hold as he focuses on ‘Knives Out’ sequels), a movie from Taika Waititi that still appears to be happening and one produced by prolific filmmaker Shawn Levy which we’d guess is still being held up by his busy schedule, which includes involvement in the final season of ‘Stranger Things’ and gearing up to direct ‘Deadpool 3’.

    Even as ‘The Mandalorian’ has returned to our screens and a variety of other ‘Star Wars’ TV series get set to roll out in the coming months, it would seem as though the development on big screen adventures set in that galaxy far, far away is moving about as fast as a Jawa sandcrawler.

    And now Variety brings word that there have been movements on a few of the movies –– and not in a positive direction.

    According to the trade magazine, the ‘Star Wars’ movies being shepherded by ‘Wonder Woman’ director Patty Jenkins and Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige are no longer in active development at Lucasfilm.

    That’s a blow, particularly as Disney had saved a release date slot in 2025 for a new ‘Star Wars’ title, but we’ll have to wait and see which of the potentials –– if any –– fills it.

    What’s the story of Patty Jenkins’ film?

    Though Patty Jenkins movie, ‘Rogue Squadron’, about Rebel X-Wing pilots, was announced with much fanfare at Disney’s 2020 Investor Day, it has suffered from a lack of real news updates in the time since.

    While leaving the ‘Squadron’ on the development backburner, Jenkins had switched to focus her efforts on a third ‘Wonder Woman’ movie. But when DC bosses shut that down in favor of the new DC Universe, she appeared to return to the ‘Star Wars’ fold. “I am still on it and that project has been in active development ever since,” she said last December. “I don’t know if it will happen or not. We never do until the development process is complete, but I look forward to its potential ahead.”

    That potential, apparently, is no longer present.

    What happened to Kevin Feige’s film?

    The Marvel boss’s movie was announced back in 2019, with (as expected) zero details when it comes to story. Feige hired ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ writer Michael Waldron to work on the script, but eyebrows were raised when he later switched to write ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’.

    Things have been very quiet since then, which is rarely a good sign. Most likely, it’s that Feige is busy heading up the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

    What of Taika Waititi’s ‘Star Wars’ film?

    There’s potentially better news for the ‘Thor: Love & Thunder’ director’s in-development movie, as he’s still at work on a script. And according to Variety’s report, he may also star in it in some capacity (and no, we doubt it’ll focus on his ‘Mandalorian’ droid IG-11).

    Elsewhere, Rian Johnson still says he wants to make more movies in the ‘Star Wars’ universe, but his focus for now is split between another movie featuring Daniel Craig’s mystery-solving Benoit Blanc and the second season of TV series ‘Poker Face’.

    And while neither Lucasfilm nor Disney has refused to confirm anything, a film is still in development from ‘Ms. Marvel’ director and documentarian Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, with a script from Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson.

    The Star Wars Celebration event happens in London the weekend of April 7th, and we can expect announcements about any chosen new film then –– along with updates on the various shows.

  • ‘Ms. Marvel’s Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy Directing New Star Wars Movie

    It’s fair to say that the news has gone quieter than news reports on Alderaan for the big screen ‘Star Wars’ side of things.

    While the TV arm keeps flourishing with ‘The Mandalorian’, its various spin-offs and other shows such as ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’, ‘Andor’ and upcoming animated series ‘Tales of the Jedi’, the movie side of Lucasfilm’s sprawling franchise hasn’t seen a release since 2019’s ‘The Rise of Skywalker’.

    And despite financial success, it was a divisive title that didn’t garner a lot of love from critics.

    Now, at least, according to Deadline, one of the projects in development at Disney’s ‘Star Wars’ assembly line is taking a tentative step forward, as the movie has hired ‘Ms. Marvel’s Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy as director.

    Obaid-Chinoy, who handled two episodes of the peppy, enjoyable Marvel outing, is being brought in now to work with writer/producer Damon Lindelof, so that she’s part of the creative team from an early stage.

    It’s no doubt to help avoid some of the director problems that Lucasfilm has faced in the past, including on ‘Solo’ and Colin Trevorrow stepping away from what became ‘The Rise of Skywalker’ under J.J. Abrams.

    And Lindelof, of course, has plenty of writing experience, having worked on ‘Lost’, created shows such as ‘The Leftovers’ and ‘Watchmen’ and provided scripts for movies including ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ and ‘Alien’ prequel ‘Prometheus’.

    Lindelof has been figuring this one out for a few months, but he hasn’t been working alone: what Deadline’s story doesn’t mention, but that The Hollywood Reporter’s Bothan spies whispered to it is that Lindelof is in fact co-writing the movie with rising star scribe Justin Britt-Gibson.

    His resume includes time as an executive story editor on Guillermo del Toro’s vampire drama, ‘The Strain’ and wrote episodes of Starz’s ‘Counterpart’, the series about parallel dimensions that starred J.K. Simmons and was cruelly cancelled after two excellent seasons. Gibson has also worked on ‘Banshee’ and ‘Into the Badlands’.

    Further, there is news that the movie’s basic story was hammered out, TV-style by a writers room convened over a two-week session in July.

    Present to figure out the ideas behind the script were Patrick Somerville, (a veteran of Lindelof’s much-admired drama ‘Leftovers’ who went on to create ‘Station Eleven’, Rayna McClendon, a consulting producer from ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ who has also contributed to Lucasfilm’s upcoming ‘Willow’ sequel series; and ‘Briarpatch’ TV series creator Andy Greenwald. There’s also mention that Dave Filoni – the creative mastermind behind much of Lucasfilm’s animated ‘Star Wars’ series and who now works alongside Jon Favreau to shepherd the ‘Mandalorian’ set of shows – was also involved.

    No concrete details have emerged about the script that Lindelof and Britt-Gibson are writing, though there is talk that it’ll be set after the events of ‘Rise of Skywalker’ and could potentially feature characters from the sequel trilogy that also includes ‘The Force Awakens’ and ‘The Last Jedi’. It’s very much a wait and see on that front, however – chances are Lindelof might be more interested in a story entirely unconnected to the recent movies (“somehow, Palpatine returned again… again.” Yeah… not loving the idea ourselves.)

    The Reporter’s sources also mention that unlike recent developments aimed at figuring out trilogies in one go, this will be a stand-alone with potential for more if it succeeds.

    And Lucasfilm could use a win, what with endless stories of big names including ‘The Last Jedi’s Rian Johnson, Marvel boss Kevin Feige and writer/director Taika Waititi talking up their plans, with little actual momentum to be found.

    The most recent disappoint was Patty Jenkins’ ‘Rogue Squadron’, which had looked like it was headed for take-off, but has since been grounded, its release date off the books and no word on when it might be headed for production, let alone release.

    Given that the Lindelof film is still in the scripting stage, we wouldn’t expect to see it much before 2025, but there will no doubt be 265 ‘Star Wars’ TV shows to fill the gap in the meantime.

    In “The Hunt,” twelve strangers wake up in a clearing, not knowing where they are or how they got there. And they don’t know they’ve been chosen to be prey for a gathering of rich people looking to kill.

    Those are elites are in for a rude awakening, though, since one of the hunted, Crystal (“GLOW” star Betty Gilpin) isn’t going down without a fight. She takes up arms and sets aim for the mastermind behind the conspiracy (Hilary Swank).

    “Of all the people you kidnapped, of all the people you killed, you picked the wrong gang,” Crystal declares.

    The project comes from writers Damon Lindelof and Nick Cuse and director Craig Zobel, who all worked together on “The Leftovers.” The premise isn’t totally new — it takes a page from Richard Connell’s short story “The Most Dangerous Game.” But the themes are especially timely and topical in today’s climate and the cast — including Ike Barinholtz, Emma Roberts, Justin Hartley, and Ethan Suplee — looks badass.

    “The Hunt” opens in theaters on September 27.
