The ongoing writers’ strike (and potential action from other guilds such as the actors’ union) is having a major impact on studio output. And Disney is not immune to changes in schedule. The company has announced that it is moving the release dates for a lot of its big upcoming movies, and that means we’ll all have to be patient when it comes to the likes of Marvel, James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’ and the ‘Star Wars’ galaxy.
Marvel, of course, has been delaying some of its films’ production and that is having a domino effect for the highly connected cinematic universe, which relies on films to set up the next entries. Lest the tapestry all unravel, that means moving some movies back.
And because there is only so much space on the calendar (and Disney seemingly already takes up a third of it), that means the next giant, phase-ending team-up movies are also on the move. ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty’ will be bumped back a year, to May 1st, 2026, inheriting the release date for follow-up ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’, which itself is headed to May 7th, 2027.
It’s not all delays for the MCU, though; ‘Deadpool 3’, which is in production, will move up from its original November 8th, 2024, date to May 3rd of that year.

More ‘Avatar’ delays
‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ will be available exclusively to purchase on Digital March 28th.
Though James Cameron’s movies would seemingly not be impacted by a writers’ strike since their scripts are essentially finished, the series can’t avoid the release date shuffle.
That means ‘Avatar’ fans, already well used to the waiting game, will see their patience tested further, since ‘Avatar 3’ has moved to December 19th, 2025, ‘Avatar 4’ to December 21st, 2029, and ‘Avatar 5’ all the way to December 19th, 2031! which means the apparent final movie will land 22 years after the original 2009 film.

New ‘Star Wars’ movie dates
(L to R) Director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and Daisy Ridley at Star Wars Celebration 2023.
If you were starting to wonder when we might ever see a new ‘Star Wars’ movie, then there’s good news.
2026 will see two movies set in that galaxy far, far away from Lucasfilm, one on May 22nd, 2026 (not the fourth?) and another set for the more traditional recent slot of December 18th that year.
A third film is reportedly headed our way on December 17th, 2027. Disney has yet to clarify any details of which of its in-development movies are taking those berths, but we can assume one is the Rey follow-up starring Daisy Ridley which has Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy in the director’s chair and was confirmed at Star Wars Celebration. On the basis of that, we can also predict that Dave Filoni’s film and possibly James Mangold‘s movie might be in the other two slots.

Live-Action ‘Moana’ and more
Dwayne Johnson announces live-action ‘Moana.’ Courtesy of Walt Disney Studios.
There are also dates on the calendar now for films that didn’t have them previously –– the live-action ‘Moana’ is set to surface on June 27th, 2025, while Fede Álvarez’ movie set in the ‘Alien’ universe is arriving on August 16th next year. Espionage thriller ‘The Amateur’, starring Rami Malek, is set for November next year.

Frustration ahead for film fans, then, but hopefully the movies will be worth the wait.
(L to R) Director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and Daisy Ridley at Star Wars Celebration 2023.
Star Wars Celebration is happening now at the Excel Center in London, so of course the announcements are coming thick and fast about that galaxy far, far away.
Yet, following a fallow period after ‘The Rise of Skywalker’ that featured any number of big, exciting promises but nothing in the way of actual movies, it’s hard not to view the news with a slightly cynical eye –– how many times have must we be told about something Rian Johnson is cooking up, or Taika Waititi’s planned film –– before we start to cross our arms as a fandom and say, “we’ll believe it when we see it!”
Our patience (young Padawans) might yet be rewarded, as Kathleen Kennedy and the Lucasfilm team took to the stage to confirm a new trio of films that hopefully have a lot more chance of coming to fruition (though, of course, we all said that about Patty Jenkins’ ‘Rogue Squadron’, still yet to leave the development hangar and waiting for a slot on the roster.)
So what did get announced today?
(L to R) Director James Mangold, Dave Filoni, and director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy at Star Wars Celebration 2023.
What is Dave Filoni working on?
Dave Filoni, of course, is one of the masterminds (alongside Jon Favreau) of the current run of small screen ‘Star Wars’ that has helped to keep the flame alive for fans including ‘The Mandalorian’ and ‘The Book of Boba Fett’ and the upcoming likes of ‘Ahsoka’ and ‘Skeleton Crew’.
But Filoni, whose province has been on the small screen for years now, is being rewarded with a shot at the big one.
He will direct a big-screen adventure tying in to ‘The Mandalorian’, a “cinematic event” that tells a vital part of the “escalating war between the Imperial remnant and the New Republic.” It’ll continue to flesh out the time between ‘Return of the Jedi’ and ‘The Force Awakens’ –– though it’s currently unknown whether it’ll mark a final chapter in the wider ‘Mando-verse’ story, or whether Filoni and Jon Favreau’s epic yarn will continue beyond the big-screen tale.
Also unknown at this point? The title or any specific details on which characters might appear. But we’d put serious credits on a certain green, big eared charmer showing up in some capacity.

This one sounds most likely to thrill fans of the ongoing Skywalker storyline, since it’ll see the return of a big part of the sequel trilogy.
The will take place at the furthest end of the ‘Star Wars’ timeline, moving 15 years beyond ‘The Rise of Skywalker’. Her film, set in an era described as the New Jedi Order, will be all about establishing a bountiful new age of Force-users in the wake of the Skywalker Saga. And the Jedi building that future? None other than Rey herself, with Daisy Ridley confirmed to return in the role she originated. “My heart is pounding,” Ridley stated as she took to the Celebration stage, to huge cheers from the audience.

James Mangold to direct a Star Wars Movie
Finally, there is news of a third movie to be directed by another filmmaker drafted in from a different corner of the Lucasfilm empire.
For his film, he’s going right back to the beginning –– exploring “the first Jedi to wield the Force” as he explained on stage. It goes back to the earliest part of the newly-updated set of Star Wars eras, the Dawn Of The Jedi.
“It takes place 25,000 years before Episode IV, and it’s about the discovery of the Force,” he explains. His influences extend to historical theological epics. “I told Kathy [Kennedy] I wanted to make a kind of Bible movie, a kind of ‘Ten Commandments‘ of ‘Star Wars’ –– kind of a Cecil B. DeMille film about the arrival of the Force, and that’s what I’ve been pecking away at between press events. That’s the idea.”
None of the movies have a release date or name announced yet, though with Disney/Lucasfilm targeting a December 2025 slot for a new ‘Star Wars’ movie, there’s a chance one of them could fill it. And at least it sounds like they have a plan –– now we wait and see if it works out.

A new Indiana Jones trailer
Talking of Mangold, Team Lucasfilm also revealed the latest look at ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’, the fifth and likely final outing for Harrison Ford’s artifact-hunting adventurer.
With the story (aside from a prologue set in the 1940s at the peak of Indy’s adventures and featuring some impressively de-aged shots of Ford) now taking place in the late 1960s, an older and wiser––debatably––Dr. Jones is more content to lecture than to put his life at risk to find some mythical treasure. It’s not the years, as he once reminded us, it’s the mileage.
But when he’s contacted by his goddaughter Helena (Phoebe Waller-Bridge), he realizes that he can’t escape his past entirely. The title gadget is being sought by a Nazi sleeper cell (including Mads Mikkelsen’s Voller) who plan to use it to correct Hitler’s “mistakes” and see the Reich restored.
They discovered it, Jones took it from them way back when and now –– as this new footage reveals –– Helena takes it from him, since she’s found a bidder willing to pay richly for it. Cue another adventure for our hero.
The new trailer, which stylishly blends the Rolling Stones’ ‘Sympathy for the Devil’ with the classic Indy theme is sure to get fans excited.
Following a premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, the next Indy movie is due in theaters on June 30th.

Ming-Na Wen as Fennec Shand in ‘The Book of Boba Fett’ on Disney+
With the recent release of ‘Book of Boba Fett’, the galaxy far, far away is expanding in ways that is bringing old and new fans into the fold. It’s giving people the chance to see characters from extended lore, new ones, and familiar locals we haven’t seen in decades.
But what ‘Book of Boba Fett’ is also bringing ‘Star Wars’, is something the franchise hasn’t seen in a very long time. A strong, badass female character in Fennec Shand, portrayed by Ming-Na Wen. She brings something the ‘Star Wars’ franchise, and just recent science fiction has been kind of lacking; a strong, powerful female lead.
But why should you care? Come with us as we dig a little into the history of strong female characters in ‘Star Wars’, and how this leads to Fennec Shand and the ground she’s laying for others. But, before we can dive into that, let’s give a little history of female characters in science fiction.
Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia in ‘Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope’
The Princess and the Scrapper
While not the first instance, many credit 1966’s ‘Star Trek’ with introducing strong science fiction characters (especially with Nichelle Nicols’ Uhura), with the second thought being our very own Princess Leia. And since this is a ‘Star Wars’ related piece, let’s focus on Leia.
In the first ‘Star Wars’ film, Leia is seen as the “damsel in destress” trope, a common one for female characters in that era of film. While we do indeed see her wielding a blaster (and obviously knowing how to use it) but she still is needing to be saved. Needing the help of the male characters around her.
There are multiple times in not just the first movie, but all through the original trilogy it is shown that Leia cannot be on her own without being captured, and a big scene of this is being captured by the greedy Jabba the Hutt, which happens as she’s going to save Han Solo.
This scene is incredibly interesting. It follows Leia’s characterization up to this point. Strong, determined, but once again, stripped of her power. Just falling back into another trope. While captured, she is forced to be his slave, even attached to chain and dressed not in her princess robes, but a metal bikini, almost like his own pet.
Obviously, there Is so much wrong with this scene and how they portray Leia as a character. Putting the focus on her body and her as an object. As if everything she had done up to that point against the empire was null and void. Being stripped of everything, but most importantly, her power.
Yes, this was just one movie, but Leia’s change from powerful space princess to chained up slave to an ugly space slug is jarring and apparent. While I do acknowledge Leia becoming much more powerful as the series goes on, there are still little bumps in the road.
Whenever there is something incredibly positive, something else more troubling always comes with it, and for every “Princess to General”, there is the offhand comment of lightsaber and force training offscreen.
Daisy Ridley as Rey in ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’
This can also translate to Rey as well. Starting off being rough and tumble, foraging for herself on Jakku until she discovers Finn. Rey is a great example of twenty-first century female characters in science fiction, but it’s clear she takes just a little bit too much from Leia.
We can thankfully rule out the metal bikini, but there are multiple times in the new trilogy we see her relying heavily on those around her. While this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, the fact she relies on others is seen as a hindrance towards her. It doesn’t bring her strength, it actively strips it.
Relying on the characters around her takes away her urgency. She basically goes through the same pitfalls Leia does; in that she relies on those around her. Completely changing the image we are given of her in ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’. It’s like teaming up with others made her less dependent.
Rey is played out to be the new ‘chosen one’, but seemingly being given that title lowers her agency. Now, while I bring this up, I absolutely love these characters. Leia especially is a hero to me. But I truly believe these characters were steppingstones, to the next strong woman to enter the galaxy.
The Galaxies Deadliest Assassin
Now what does all of this have to do with Fennec? A rather newish character to the ‘Star Wars’ canon, she was introduced in ‘The Mandalorian’, and appeared on ‘Star Wars: The Bad Batch’ before becoming a main character in ‘The Book of Boba Fett’. And while one might suggest her being a supportive character in the show, I’d argue she’s far more than just that.
Since Fennec Shand’s first reveal in ‘The Mandalorian’ TV show, we are told she is the most dangerous assassin in the galaxy. But she doesn’t fit the female assassin tropes. When one hears of a “female assassin” you imagine a sexy, scantily clad femme fatale, with a gun at her thigh.
(L to R) Temuera Morrison and Ming-Na Wen in ‘The Book of Boba Fett’ on Disney+
But when we see her, she’s cool, collected and deadly. It’s not her gender that makes her deadly or powerful. It’s her skill, and the fear she implants in others in the galaxy. This also translates over to her ‘Bad Batch’ appearance as well. Nowhere in any of her cameos is she falling into said old tropes.
This leads into her ‘Book of Boba Fett’ role. Even next to the most ruthless bounty hunter in the galaxy…she is his equal. Fett does not look down on her or even try to control her. He saves her, offers her a chance to escape once her “debt” is paid, but she chooses to stay. Fennec can see the freedom and chooses to have that while also having her own power.
Boba Fett sits on that throne, yes, but Fennec shares it. She’s under no one’s control, she’s not a slave…she’s just powerful. Able to hold her own and even be on par with someone like Fett. She’s not leaning on him for help but using him and his skill.
Having a character like Fennec is new to the franchise, and I hope this isn’t the last of this type of character we see.
Looking Forward into the Galaxy
‘Star Wars’ has had so many female characters up to this point. And while you can argue their place in the “strong female science fiction” character spot, none of them have taken the mantle more than Fennec Shand.
One can argue that she maybe a “testing ground” for characters like her to come, and I truly believe this to be the case. A character that can stand on her own, share the power of the male characters around her without relying on them. Showing that characters like her don’t need to fit in a mold or a trope to be badass.
It’s not just ‘Star Wars’ that needs more characters like this, but all of science fiction. I hope we see more like her in the future of the franchise. While not fitting the same mold but breaking their own and showing just how badass someone in a galaxy far, far away can be.
If you’re curious as to what new movie this week might be best for you, Moviefone is here to help you find it and watch it. This week’s films feature adorable pets who save the day, royalty, and guys who have really noisy thoughts. Here are the movies we’re suggesting this week:
Coming 2 America (Amazon Prime)
Arsenio Hall and Eddie Murphy in ‘Coming 2 America’
In the 33 years since we first met Prince Akeem (Eddie Murphy) and Semmi (Arsenio Hall), life in Zamunda has been mostly peaceful and prosperous. He has three wonderful, talented, strong daughters, but sadly the eldest (KiKi Layne) doesn’t seem to be in contention for the throne as King Jaffe Joffer (James Earl Jones) appears to be shuffling off this mortal coil. “Lucky” for Akeem, he discovers that a one-night stand in New York City all those years ago yielded a son (Jermaine Fowler). But does he have what it takes to take the throne?
Watch It If: Repeatedly watching the first film just isn’t doing it for you anymore, and you’d like an eye full of gorgeous costumes and an ear full of fantastic, recognizable music specially fit for Zamunda.

Raya and the Last Dragon (Disney+)
Kelly Marie Tran and Awkwafina lend their voices to ‘Raya and the Last Dragon’
Raya (Kelly Marie Tran) is a warrior princess who is also the guardian of the dragon gem, the last piece of dragon magic existing in the fictional world of Kumandra. In order to reunite the world, she has to track down broken pieces of the gem and the only one she can trust is a wisecracking dragon named Sisu (Awkwafina). So, this should be easy.
Watch It If: You’re prepared to spend a night with a dragon who is way funnier than the memes you’ve been sending to people on your group text chain, and if you have a thing for giant pangolins rollin’ around and being really cute (shout out to Tuk Tuk, aka Alan Tudyk).

Moxie (Netflix)
Hadley Robinson and Alycia Pascual-Peña in ‘Moxie’
If, when faced with a difficult situation, you say things like “that’s just how the cookie crumbles,” then you are a decrepit, ancient, aged person and you need to let the youth take over in the quest to make the world a better place. Vivian (Hadley Robinson) is such a kid, who finds herself tasked with motivating the students at her high school to make change in favor of equality. She finds her mom’s (Amy Poehler) old zines championing feminism and forward-thinking, and she sets out to make her own and speak up for change.
Watch It If: You’re a fan of Amy Poehler as a director, and if you want to see commonplace events of high school life through a new, more progressive lens. Also, a must see for teens who feel like no one understands.

Chaos Walking (In Theaters and IMAX)
Daisy Ridley and Tom Holland in ‘Chaos Walking’
Women no longer exist where Todd (Tom Holland) lives in Prentisstown. So when Daisy Ridley as Viola, a survivor of a crashed spaceship, crosses his path, he’s noticeably perplexed. Viola happens to know that’s the case, since in this sci-fi world, men’s thoughts broadcast as telepathy to everyone in the general vicinity. They call it “noise,” and each manifestation of it is different. But with bad guys lingering around every corner, some whose minds suspiciously don’t broadcast their thoughts, Viola finds herself on the run with Todd, whose thoughts are so big they serve as a beacon for said bad guys. Great.
Watch It If: You want to see a little more out of these stars outside their superhero or space odyssey realms, and if you enjoyed the sci-fi world of Annihilation and want to add a little dash of Western flavor in there.

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run (Paramount+)
Patrick and SpongeBob in ‘The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run’
Gary has been snail-napped. THIS IS NOT A DRILL, PEOPLE. SpongeBob’s faithful companion has disappeared, and the only way to solve the mystery and bring that slimy little guy home is to go back to where it all began. Consider this SpongeBob’s origin story, complete with the usual offbeat humor and cameos plentiful in these films.
Watch It If: Your only contact with a sponge has been continually washing and re-washing your own dishes this past year, and you need a dose of sweetness from Bikini Bottom.

The Truffle Hunters (In Theaters in NY & LA)
A scene from ‘The Truffle Hunters’
If you’ve ever passed a truffle and went into cardiac arrest at the cost, this documentary unlocks a smidgeon of the economic mystery but more importantly, the magical world that exists around them. Nestled in the forests of Piedmont, Italy, the film features a handful of men who have dedicated their days AND nights to searching out Alba truffles with their truffle-sniffing dogs. The result is a beautifully shot fly-on-the-wall glimpse into lives you’ve likely never known existed.
Watch It If: You need a change of pace from the more typical frenzied energy of most releases. This cast of wacky characters is so intimate, it’s almost like you’ve been invited to stay in their homes and drink wine, watch them type letters, and discuss the awesomeness of their dogs (that have names like Birba, which means “mischievous”).

John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, and Oscar Isaac star in ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.’
In this latest TV spot from Lucasfilm we get a couple of title cards that ominously tell us that “The Saga will end.” That shouldn’t be too big a surprise; you can only have three movies in a trilogy, right?
GvZ7PB7b
This trailer definitely plays up the idea of things coming to a close. Not only do we hear Mark Hamill talking about destiny, we also hear Threepio say something about looking at his friends “one last time.” That might mean this is the last ride for the fussy protocol droid. On the other hand, the trailers for ‘The Force Awakens’ and ‘The Last Jedi’ were pretty good at using misdirection to subvert our expectations, so it won’t be too surprising to see that happening here. In any event, all will be revealed in less than a month when ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’ opens on December 20.
What if “Hamlet” were told from the viewpoint of Ophelia? That’s the premise of “Ophelia,” starring Daisy Ridley (nearly unrecognizable in a long red wig) as the classic Shakespearean character.
In the first trailer, we see her trying to get Hamlet (George MacKay) to flee the castle after his father’s murder, worrying that she’ll be forced to marry another, and then being dramatically dragged out of the court.
Naomi Watts, who plays Hamlet’s mother, Queen Gertrude, has previously said that, although Ophelia goes stark-raving mad in the play, she’s far from a damsel in distress in this film. “If [a woman’s mind] is powerful, it must be madness. And now there’s this shift that’s taking place, and that’s reflected in this storytelling.”
Claire McCarthy (“Skin”) directs this new adaptation, which costars Clive Owen as murderous Claudius and Tom Felton as Ophelia’s brother, Laertes.
The trailer includes key scenes from any “Hamlet “production, including Ophelia in the water, the bloody aftermath of the final showdown, but with the focus on Ophelia, this film promises to be quite different.
The opens in limited release on June 28, followed by a digital and On Demand release on July 3.
Earlier today, at Star Wars Celebration in Chicago, we were served a deep-dish slice of brand new details about the highly-anticipated sequel, one that supposedly closes out the Skywalker “saga” films for good. The lively Episode IX panel, hosted by none other than Stephen Colbert (who has been a fan “three weeks longer than any of you,” thanks to him attending an early screening of the original film back in 1977), featured co-writer/director J.J. Abrams, producer Kathleen Kennedy, and stars Anthony Daniels, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, Billy Dee Williams and new kid on the block Naomi Ackie (more on her in a minute). It was conversational and fun and we learned a lot about the new movie, including …
(We should probably propose a mild spoiler warning to those who want to go into “Episode IX” completely free of knowledge.)
The Title of the Movie
At the very end of the panel, the trailer for the movie ran (a very, very good trailer that you have undoubtedly watched 10,000 times already) and at the end of that trailer, words we had never seen before appeared: “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.” What that means, exactly, is somewhat unclear. Kylo Ren (Adam Driver, a no-show today) is obviously a Skywakler but an intriguing fan theory has already emerged: that Skywalker is the new name for anyone who does good with their Force connectivity. After all, Luke was the last Jedi, but something always rises in its place. Something … like Skywalker.
The Emperor is Back
The insidious laugh at the end of the trailer belongs to none other than Emperor Palpatine, the big bad of the original trilogy and the titular “Phantom Menace” of the prequels. He is once again played by English actor Ian McDiarmid, who was on hand at Celebration to inform the control booth to run the trailer “one more time.” It’s fascinating that McDiarmid has played the character in so many formats for so many years (he’s now 74), when the character was originally visualized thanks to the help of a woman in heavy prosthetic make-up and a chimpanzee. (Seriously, look it up.)
Lucasfilm
The Movie Had to Be About Many Things
Before the cast even took to the stage, Abrams said how important the movie was, on a number of levels. “This movie, in addition to being the end of three trilogy, it has to work as its own movie,” Abrams explained to Colbert (and the thousands of audience members in attendance). “That’s been part of the fun of it, part of the challenge of it. But it’s about this new generation and what they’ve inherited, as they face the greatest evil, are they prepared? It’s amazing to look at this thing George created and bring it to a close.” When the trailer ran, everything he was alluding to became somewhat clearer, as our new characters are left to deal with unresolved issues, the hollowed-out remains of the Death Star (don’t know which one yet) and, of course, the Emperor.
Lucasfilm
The Use of Carrie Fisher Material Was Emotional for Everyone
Abrams, who is deep into the editing process of the movie (Christmas will be here before you know it, pal!), spoke about the use of Carrie Fisher footage that was shot for “The Force Awakens,” never used, and is being incorporated into the new movie to finish Princess (General?) Leia’s arc. (You can see some of this footage in the trailer.) “The crazy thing is, I say this emotionally, every day it hits me that she’s not here but it’s so surreal because we’re working with her still. She’s in scenes,” Abrams said. “And the craziest part is how not crazy it feels. She’s there in these scenes, in some scenes with her daughter. Princess Leia lives in this film in a way that is mind-blowing to me.”
Things Don’t Pick Up Right Where They Left Off
The time between “The Force Awakens” and “The Last Jedi” is relatively short; Finn doesn’t even wake up from the wounds he suffered at the end of the first movie until after the big introductory set piece. But that isn’t the case this time around. Abrams revealed that “the movie doesn’t pick up immediately after.” This sentiment was echoed by Daisy Ridley later in the panel. There seems to have been an evolution, or at least a maturation, between the movies, which is pretty exciting.
Lucasfilm
The Gang’s Together This Time
One of the more shocking things about re-watching “The Last Jedi” is the scene at the end when Poe (one of the main characters of the so-called “sequel trilogy”) introduces himself to Rey. They only meet at the very end of the second movie! That’s insane. Happily, Abrams said that the new film can be described as “an adventure that the group goes on together.” Whew!
Anthony Daniels’ Book Title Got Rejected
The uncontested star of the first part of the panel was undoubtedly Anthony Daniels, who was clearly having the time of his life holding court in front of such a large audience. At one point he started talking about his new memoir, which will be unveiled tomorrow, and how the original title of the memoir was rejected by his publisher. The name he proposed, he said? “Telling the Odds.”
Lucasfilm
Billy Dee Never Left
It was a hoot to see Billy Dee Williams, just as smooth as ever, get up on stage and talk about his love and admiration for the cast and crew, and in particular JJ (at various times he called the filmmaker “a beautiful young man” and “extraordinary”). When Colbert asked him what it was like getting back into the Lando groove again, Williams perfectly shot back, “How did I find Lando again? Lando never left me.” Abrams then went on to describe Williams’ first day on set (“everyone went quiet”). “It was honestly an emotional thing,” Abrams said. At the end of his section of the presentation, Williams also defended Lando’s position in the original trilogy. Hilariously, he became animated, saying, “I’m sick and tired of being accused of betraying Han Solo!” He went on: “He was up against Darth Vader! He had to figure something out! Did anybody die? Nobody died! I had to prevent the complete demise of my friend and his friends.” It was truly amazing. And Williams was life: Lando never left.
Naomi Ackie’s Character May or May Not Be Lando’s Daughter
When introducing her new character Jannah to the “Star Wars” universe, Ackie deftly avoided saying whether or not she was Lando’s daughter, even when asked, point blank, by Colbert (apparently she helps the central characters during their journey). “Lando is a very charming man so he could have children all over the universe,” she demurred. Given that she was interviewed right after Williams and her character’s considerable amount of swag, all things point to yes on that particular paternity issue.
Lucasfilm
Finn is Now Fully Part of the Resistance
John Boyega spoke about the journey of his character Finn, who started off as a Stormtrooper, became more shaded and complex in “The Last Jedi,” and is now fully on board with the Resistance. He said that, “Finn has just found he’s got his identity in the Resistance.” Part of that identity, Boyega said, was that he finally got an iconic costume. He said that when he saw his new blue pants, he exclaimed, “I’m in Star Wars!” (Again, we’re assuming.)
Phasma is Maybe Dead Probably?
Boyega was pretty dodgy when it came to answering questions about whether or not we’ll see a rematch with his chief antagonist, Captain Phasma. When Colbert asked if that relationship has found closure, he said, “Emotional closure, sure,” without saying whether or not she’d be returning. Reading his body language and the way he was answering his questions, either she is really dead or Boyega has gotten a lot better at evading pressing “Star Wars”-related questions.
The Messy Love Triangle Remains
During his section of the panel, Boyega joked that Finn is “single and ready to mingle.” Later on, he remarked that wartime is “a very distracted place to fall in love.” And during Kelly Marie Tran’s section, all she said was that Finn is “a very eligible bachelor.” So we say yes, the Jedi might be gone but the triangle remains.
Lucasfilm
Oscar Isaac Thinks Poe is a More Versatile Pilot Than Han
When Colbert asked if Poe was a better pilot than Han Solo, Oscar Isaac squirmed. “There was so much goodwill a second ago,” the actor said. He then couched his answer: “No one can fly the Millennium Falcon like Han. However, Poe can literally anything.” He then joked that Poe would be “the better Uber driver.”
Rey Has Read the Books
At the end of “The Last Jedi,” it was revealed that Rey had stolen the sacred Jedi texts before Luke and Yoda burned down the tree that housed them. (That same kind of tree was in the backyard of a future Resistance all-star … Poe.) Ridley said that, “She may have gotten started,” noting that the long time in between movies would have given her plenty of opportunity to catch up.
Lucasfilm
There Will Be New Force Powers
One of the more divisive elements of “The Last Jedi,” a movie seemingly comprised only of divisive moments, was the introduction of new or at least unseen Force powers, like the communication between Rey and Kylo Ren, Luke’s astral projection, and Leia’s deep space recovery. When Colbert asked if Rey had any new Force abilities, she kicked the question to JJ. After giving a lengthy shout-out to the movie’s unbelievable stunt team, he did acknowledged that, “Yes, there are some other things and you’ll see them soon.” Could he be referring to the superhuman jump that Rey does as Kylo’s TIE fighter tries to run her down?
Suotamo Has a Preferred Preparation for Porg
After a lovely appreciation of Peter Mayhew, the original actor to inhabit Chewbacca, and a cute story about his young child visiting set, Joonas Suotamo finally revealed what Chewbacca’s preferred method of porg-preparation is. “They taste best fried,” the actor said, in the most deadpan way possible.
There’s a New Creature…
One of the photos they showed was of Snap Wexley (Abrams’ old friend Greg Grunberg) standing next to a tall, slug-like creature named Klaude. Klaude is hilarious and adorable and we don’t know much else about him (including why might be voicing him). Abrams, at various points during the panel, stated how much of the movie he attempted to shoot on real locations with practical creatures and droids.

… And a New Droid!
Another character introduced during the panel is a new droid! His name is “D-0” (pronounced “Dio”) and he kind of looks like an old timey megaphone on a unicycle. In other words: he is adorable. And he rolled out onto the stage and interacted with BB-8. The amount of Dios that are going to be under the Christmas tree this year cannot be overstated.
“Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” opens in your galaxy on December 20th, 2019.
Principal photography on the film has concluded, and to mark the occasion, director J.J. Abrams posted an emotional photo of the three lead actors: Daisy Ridley (Rey), John Boyega (Finn), and Oscar Isaac (Poe).
They’re embracing on a desert set, with crew members seen in the background:
It feels impossible, but today wrapped photography on Episode IX. There is no adequate way to thank this truly magical crew and cast. I’m forever indebted to you all. pic.twitter.com/138AprtFuZ
Boyega also posted the photo, tweeting, “That’s a wrap on Star Wars episode 9 and the end to a chapter of my life that I couldn’t be more thankful for. What a process! It really has been a joy to be in these movies surrounded by amazing people. JJ thank you for making my dreams come true.”
It’s a rare and precious moment, as the trio has shared very little screen time, reuniting only in the final moments of “The Last Jedi.”
The photo should spark some theorizing online among “Star Wars” fans. What planet is this desert located on? Maybe Rey has returned to Jakku? Or perhaps they are on Tattooine?
Of course, “Episode IX” still has a long way to go. The film will still have to complete post-production and likely some reshoots before its December 20 release date.
And it doesn’t even have an official title yet (TELL US, ALREADY).
It’s also not that much of a surprise. Williams reprised his role as Lando in two episodes of the animated series “Star Wars: Rebels,” which wrapped up this March. And, of course, the character was splashily reintroduced in this summer’s “Solo: A Star Wars Story” (this time the cape-loving lothario was portrayed with considerable swagger by Donald Glover). There’s also the more practical element of bringing back Lando, who will effectively bridge the gap between the original trilogy and these new films, considering that both Han and Luke have been killed off and Carrie Fisher died tragically between installments.
The mysteries of the Star Wars universe need time to unravel, so patient, we must be.
Although fans might wish Daisy Ridley would commit to playing Rey beyond “Star Wars: Episode IX,” the actress has given contradictory responses when discussing her future in the franchise. Ridley chatted with Rolling Stone about the prospect of reprising her role beyond the current trilogy’s conclusion, and she at first seemed very much opposed to the idea.
“I am really, really excited to do the third thing and round it out, because ultimately, what I was signing on to was three films,” she told Rolling Stone. “So in my head, it’s three films. I think it will feel like the right time to round it out.”
That said, when asked about making more Star Wars films in 30 years, her “no” became less convincing. Her answer changed to “Who knows?” and even “sure. Maybe.” That said, she is not at all confident we’ll even be alive for the movie to be made.
“I honestly feel like the world may end in the next 30 years, so, if in 30 years we are not living underground in a series of interconnected cells … then sure. Maybe,” she said. “But again, it’s like, who knows.”
With so many conflicting comments in there, we won’t even try to place our bets. We’re going to have to wait and see.
