    • Universal made its big presentation to the 2026 CinemaCon crowd.
    • Among the movies promoted were ‘Disclosure Day’ and ‘The Odyssey’.
    • There was also a look at ‘Minions & Monsters’ and ‘Other Mommy’.

Universal had a more muted and mixed 2025 than some other studios –– the latest ‘Jurassic World’ outing was a hit, but other titles, including thriller sequel ‘M3GAN 2.0’ stumbled.

Can it regain its mojo? ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’s success as certainly helped, and it does at least have some heavy hitters on deck, including Steven Spielberg with sci-fi pic ‘Disclosure Day’ and Christopher Nolan’s much-anticipated epic ‘The Odyssey’.

Beyond those two biggies, we can expect the usual blend of family fare (including ‘Minions & Monsters’, the latest extension of the ‘Despicable Me’ franchise) and comedies such as ‘Focker In-Law’.

Before the full presentation kicked off, Snoop Dogg took the stage to confirm that the biopic based on his career will start filming this summer, directed by Craig Brewer and starring Jonathan Daviss.

    Here’s what was revealed…

    The Odyssey

Christopher Nolan’s epic, based on Homer’s story, was somewhat naturally the first big movie featured. Starring half of Hollywood, it promises to be massive in scale and ambitious in scope.

The filmmaker himself took the stage to talk up his latest, joking that he’s glad he doesn’t have to follow Steven Spielberg. ‘The Odyssey’ is not, he says a story. It’s THE story, one he knew he had to shoot entirely in IMAX.

He praised his ensemble, especially Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway and Tom Holland, who he called the heart of the film. Oh, and it was a “nightmare to make in the best way possible,” but he’s nearly finished.

More than five minutes of new footage from the movie was shown, including a shipwrecked Odysseus (Damon) washing up on a shore, where he’s greeted by the goddess Calypso, played by Charlize Theron, asking her about his past life which he cannot remember, and a battle from the Trojan war and the iconic Trojan Horse.

Illumination has been a consistent performer for Universal, its animated output boosting studio coffers. So of course the team were present to pimp the next ‘Minions’ movie featuring the little yellow troublemakers.

It’s set in the 1920s and features the Minions trying to find a new master to serve. Pierre Coffin, who co-writes, directs and voices the creatures, told the crowd that he put everything into the new one, before introducing some fresh footage.

The initial teaser for the horror movie, starring Jessica Chastain, was shown. It features Bela (Arabella Olivia Clark), an 8-year-old girl living in a home with marital problems, confronts a sinister entity that comes out of her closet. The presence, whom she calls “Other Mommy,” becomes increasingly threatening to her and her family.

Getting more of a spotlight was the new ‘Meet the Parents’ outing, which sees Ariana Grande as a young woman looking to marry into Ben Stiller‘s family (and Stiller’s Greg Focker is suspicious of her).

Stiller and Robert De Niro took the stage to introduce a first look, with De Niro commenting that Grande is the funniest scene partner he’s ever had. Ouch!

‘Disclosure Day’s Colman Domingo arrived on stage to introduce his director, Steven Spielberg, who is getting a special award from CinemaCon (along with a sizzle reel of past work and a standing ovation from the audience).

His latest, an alien-inflected sci-fi thriller starring Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor and Domingo.

The iconic filmmaker took the chance to argue for longer release windows, which naturally plays well with this crowd.

He also sat down with Domingo to discuss his own movie-watching history, his father’s belief in life beyond our world, his own thoughts on aliens and his time making this latest effort.

New footage was shown (though Spielberg said he was keeping every frame of the third act withheld until the movie itself is released), with plenty of tense action.

“It is an experience, this movie,” Spielberg promised. “All you need to get from the beginning to the end is a seat belt.”

Rivaling fellow Jane Austen novel ‘Pride & Prejudice’ in terms of how many times it has been adapted, ‘Sense and Sensibility’ is another of the author’s literary classics that filmmakers keep going back to.

Many people view Ang Lee’s 1995 movie version of the story as the best cinematic example, but that isn’t putting off the team behind a new take.

Georgia Oakley, who most recently directed ‘Blue Jean’, will oversee the new version, which has ‘Twisters’ Daisy Edgar-Jones on board to star, with writer Diana Reid on script duty.

Originally published in 1811 with the anonymous byline “By a Lady,” ‘Sense and Sensibility’ was the first novel by Austen, who later also wrote such literary classics as ‘Emma’, ‘Persuasion’ and, of course, the aforementioned ‘Pride & Prejudice’.

The novel’s narrative follows sisters Elinor (the role Edgar-Jones will take) and Marianne Dashwood, who navigate love, loss and financial uncertainty as they are forced to leave their family estate in Sussex.

The role of Marianne Dashwood hasn’t been announced yet.

In the 1995 version, Emma Thompson (who also wrote the adaptation) played Elinor, with Kate Winslet as Marianne. The notable British cast also included Hugh Grant, Harriet Walter and Alan Rickman.

Edgar-Jones, who broke out big with 2020 TV drama ‘Normal People’, has been a rising star ever since.

She’s been seen in the small-screen likes of ‘Under the Banner of Heaven’ and movies including ‘Fresh’, ‘Where the Crawdads Sing’, ‘Twisters’ and this year’s ‘On Swift Horses’.

Coming up, she has legal thriller ‘A Place in Hell’, directed by Chloe Domont and ‘Here Comes the Flood’ opposite Denzel Washington.

When will the new ‘Sense and Sensibility’ arrive in theaters?

With the movie in pre-production, this will likely start filming at some point soon this year, so we could conceivably see it in 2026.

But Focus Features has yet to reveal an exact release date.

Netflix is certainly not shy about splashing the cash when it comes to securing big name talent for its movies.

And for new heist pic ‘Here Comes the Flood,’ it has certainly landed some recognizable actors.

The streaming service used its recent upfront presentation to announce that Denzel Washington, Robert Pattinson and Daisy Edgar-Jones will lead the cast for the movie.

And that’s not the only exciting person attached to this one, as Fernando Meirelles, who directed classic ‘City of God’ and more recently tackled Netflix’s papal drama ‘The Two Popes’ is aboard to direct.

What’s the story of ‘Here Comes the Flood’?

    'Invasion' series creator Simon Kinberg.
    ‘Invasion’ series creator Simon Kinberg.

Most of the details for this one are locked in a bank vault for now, but there is a basic description: an unconventional heist flick about a bank guard, a teller, and a master thief in a deadly game of cons and double crosses.

The script comes from Simon Kinberg, known for his work on the likes of ‘The Martian’ and ‘The 355.’

Kinberg also worked as a producer and writer on several of the Fox ‘X-Men’ movies, and stepped up to direct ‘X-Men: Dark Phoenix.’

More recently, he’s been involved in Apple TV+ series such as ‘Invasion’ and ‘Sugar,’ and has a variety of projects in the works via his Genre Films company –– a list that also now includes ‘Here Comes the Flood.’

Where else can we see Denzel Washington?

Denzel Washington plays Macrinus in 'Gladiator II' from Paramount Pictures.
Denzel Washington plays Macrinus in ‘Gladiator II’ from Paramount Pictures.

Washington needs little introduction as he’s still one of the biggest stars around.

He’s coming off of praised turns in ‘Gladiator II’ and ‘The Tragedy of Macbeth,’ while also keeping the ‘Equalizer’ franchise ticking along.

The actor will next be seen leading Spike Lee’s crime thriller ‘Highest 2 Lowest,’ based on Akira Kurosawa’s classic ‘High and Low,’ which A24 releases in August, ahead of the film’s Apple TV+ streaming date of September 5th.

Though he has been making statements about retiring, at least from acting, he’s still keeping busy.

This is what he said about potentially stepping back from being on screen:

“There are very few films left for me to make that I’m interested in, and I have to be inspired by the filmmaker. The things that are going on for me professionally behind the camera are as important to me now as in front of the camera. I think there’s less and less time I’ll be spending in front of the camera.”

In addition to ‘Here Comes the Flood,’ he’s talked up a potential role in the planned third ‘Black Panther’ movie though that has yet to be officially confirmed) and has other possible roles coming up, including a project about the historical warrior Hannibal.

And even if he does decide that his days as an actor are numbered, he’ll likely to continue to produce and direct movies.

What else is Robert Pattinson working on?

Robert Pattinson in 'Tenet'. Photo: Warner Bros.

Pattinson was most recently on screens in Bong Joon Ho’s new sci-fi satire ‘Mickey 17’ about a man who serves on a spaceship who is replaced with a clone of himself every time he dies on board. The film was not a success at the box office.

He’s also worked on Lynne Ramsay’s new comedy horror drama ‘Die, My Love,’ opposite Jennifer Lawrence, and has filmed romantic movie ‘The Drama.’

Right now, the actor is at work on Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ for Universal, and has also filmed new crime thriller ‘Primetime.’

And, of course, there is lead role in Matt Reeves’ long-gestating ‘The Batman’ sequel, which should kick off filming at the end of this year, though it has been through several delays already while Reeves works on the script.

The most recent rumor has Pattinson potentially scoring a role in the third ‘Dune’ movie from Denis Villeneuve, but as with Washington and ‘Black Panther,’ there doesn’t appear to be a deal in place yet.

What is Daisy Edgar-Jones working on?

(from left) Kate (Daisy Edgar-Jones) and Tyler (Glen Powell) in ‘Twisters’, directed by Lee Isaac Chung.

Daisy Edgar-Jones broke out big with Irish drama series ‘Normal People,’ and since built herself a healthy movie career.

Following a successful transition via ‘Where the Crawdads Sing,’ she most recently starred in ‘Twisters’ and romantic drama ‘On Swift Horses.’

Next, she’ll be seen starring opposite Michelle Williams in ‘A Place in Hell’ from ‘Fair Play’ filmmaker Chloe Domont.

When will ‘Here Comes the Flood’ be released?

Netflix has not yet announced when ‘Here Comes the Flood’ will arrive; nor do we know whether it’ll get a theatrical release ahead of it arriving on the company’s servers.

Opening in theaters on July 19th, ‘Twisters’ is real throwback movie making –– which makes sense, since it effectively follows (though rarely directly references) the 1996 Jan de Bont-directed original.

Which means you don’t have to have seen the 1990s movie to enjoy the new one, which serves as a callback to that era of filmmaking. It’s sitting firmly in big-scale event-movie territory, and the hand of executive producer Steven Spielberg can be felt, if lightly.

(from left) Lily (Sasha Lane) and Tyler (Glen Powell) in 'Twisters', directed by Lee Isaac Chung.
(from left) Lily (Sasha Lane) and Tyler (Glen Powell) in ‘Twisters’, directed by Lee Isaac Chung.

At one point, it looked as though ‘Twisters’ might be headed down the road of a sequel to the original that would feature the daughter of Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton’s characters. But the path has instead led it to a much more standalone place, drawing only on the concept of storm chasers (and, early on, including a nod to the storm-monitoring device known as “Dorothy” from the 1996 movie).

It’s a smart move, as ‘Twisters’ is allowed to mostly stand on its own, and it provides enough entertainment value to blow past any problems.

    ‘Twisters’: Script and Direction

(from left) Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell and director Lee Isaac Chung on the set of 'Twisters'.
(from left) Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell and director Lee Isaac Chung on the set of ‘Twisters’.

With a script that nods back to ‘Twister’ in credits form (the original movie’s writers Michael Crichton and Anne-Marie Martin score a “based on characters created by” mention, the new film is written by Joseph Kosinski (the ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ director flirted with making this a few years back in its development stage) and Mark L. Smith (yes, the man behind ‘The Revenant’).

In many ways, it leans more towards Kosinski’s blockbuster sensibility, in both the positive and negative senses. The screenplay is a slick machine, running you from windy set-piece to spinning scenes of destruction, but taking its foot off the pedal enough to fill in some decent character detail for at least Edgar-Jones’ Kate and Powell’s Tyler.

Yet with that shape come the predictable cliches that always seem to be swept up too. There are shortcuts to emotional drama and some of the supporting characters might as well carry signs reading “uptight martinet” or “nervy reporter” instead of seeming like real people. Still, the movie around them is fun enough to handwave that away.

Minari’ director Lee Isaac Chung is probably tired of people being surprised that he went from directing an intimate, personal drama of family struggles to a huge-scale thriller where cars and people go flying. But he brings some echo of his past work to this latest effort, dialing down on what makes the lead characters tick, while, along with cinematographer Dan Mindel and the talented effects team, make the tornado scenes work. And the personal stakes don’t end with our heroes –– there are scenes of locals impacted by the terrifying twisters and even some sneaky chat about climate change.

    ‘Twisters’: Performances

(from left) Dexter (Tunde Adebimpe), Lily (Sasha Lane), Ben (Harry Hadden-Paton), Boone (Brandon Perea), Dani (Katy O’Brian), Javi (Anthony Ramos), Tyler (Glen Powell) and Kate (Daisy Edgar-Jones) in 'Twisters', directed by Lee Isaac Chung.

From the marketing, this could well have been re-titled “the Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell Show”, with a subtitle of “also featuring Anthony Ramos and some other people”. While the focus is mostly certainly on the lead duo, Ramos and one or two others do get moments to shine.

    Daisy Edgar-Jones as Kate Cooper

Daisy Edgar-Jones as Kate in 'Twisters', directed by Lee Isaac Chung.
Daisy Edgar-Jones as Kate in ‘Twisters’, directed by Lee Isaac Chung.

Daisy Edgar-Jones is our focus here, her storm expert Kate enjoys the lion’s share of the characterization, including a dramatic, tragic introduction and a full arc that finds her re-discovering her passion for tackling tornadoes (she’s less looking to chase them, more find a way to shut them down).

And in the actress, Chung could not have picked a more luminous lead –– several moments work because Edgar-Jones’ expressive face make that happen, and she’s certainly got the dramatic chops to carry the storyline. Plus, her chemistry with Powell is palpable, even if the romantic side is more bubbling under than raging storm.

    Glen Powell as Tyler Owens

Glen Powell as Tyler in 'Twisters', directed by Lee Isaac Chung.
Glen Powell as Tyler in ‘Twisters’, directed by Lee Isaac Chung.

Between ‘Hit Man’ and now this, Glen Powell is spending 2024 proving that he has full-on star power. His introduction ladles on the smug-but-likeable charm and partly thanks to the actor, Owens has more depths that you might suspect from first glance. Sure, he’s cocky and arrogant, but Powell infuses him with those extra layers.

    Anthony Ramos as Javi

Javi (Anthony Ramos) in 'Twisters', directed by Lee Isaac Chung.
Javi (Anthony Ramos) in ‘Twisters’, directed by Lee Isaac Chung.

Anthony Ramos is probably regretting signing on to this latest big-scale film –– after being overshadowed by Optimus Prime in ‘Transformers: Rise of the Beasts’, he’s now playing third fiddle to his co-stars. Still, Javi is enough of a solid character to prove worthy of the actor.

    Maura Tierney as Cathy Cooper

Maura Tierney as Cathy in 'Twisters', directed by Lee Isaac Chung.
Maura Tierney as Cathy in ‘Twisters’, directed by Lee Isaac Chung.

Appearing as Kate’s mother, Maura Tierney makes the most of her couple of scenes, playing well against Edgar-Jones and Powell.

(from left) Mike (Stephen Oyoung), Peter (Alex Kingi), Scott (David Corenswet), Javi (Anthony Ramos) and Kate (Daisy Edgar-Jones) in ‘Twisters’, directed by Lee Isaac Chung.

As we mentioned in the scripting section, the rest of the characters are largely archetypes, with future ‘Superman‘ David Corenswet essentially a reboot of the snooty, profit-chasing character Cary Elwes played in the original. The rest of Tyler’s storm-chasing team are a fun bunch, but only get the occasional moment to impact the story.

    ‘Twisters’: Final Thoughts

With a film such as ‘Twisters’, there’s always a debate to have whether it justifies its existence. But by not (mostly) looking to reboot the 1996 movie or go the legacy route, it proves to offer enough fun, its nostalgic nature not tied directly to ‘Twister’ but instead the sort of movie that one typified.

It’s driven by two great leads and certainly throws enough at the screen (literally in certain scenes) to make its basic concept work.

‘Twisters’ receives 8 out of 10 stars.

    What’s the story of ‘Twisters’?

‘Twisters’ stars Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell and Anthony Ramos as equal forces, with opposing motivations, who come together to try to predict, and possibly tame, the immense power of tornadoes.

Edgar-Jones stars as Kate Carter, a former storm chaser haunted by a devastating encounter with a tornado during her college years who now studies storm patterns on screens safely in New York City. She is lured back to the open plains by her friend, Javi (Ramos) to test a groundbreaking new tracking system.

There, she crosses paths with Tyler Owens (Powell), the charming and reckless social-media superstar who thrives on posting his storm-chasing adventures with his raucous crew, the more dangerous the better.

As storm season intensifies, terrifying phenomena never seen before are unleashed, and Kate, Tyler, Javi and their crews find themselves squarely in the paths of multiple storm systems converging over central Oklahoma in the fight of their lives.

    Tell me about ‘Twister’

The original movie, which also featured the likes of Cary Elwes, Jami Gertz, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Alan Ruck and Todd Field (yes, the director of ‘Little Children’ and ‘TAR’) told the story of the Hardings (Hunt and Paxton) who must deal with their collapsing marriage even as they reunite to create an advanced weather warning system.

‘Twister’ was a success, earning $494 million worldwide, and lauded for its state-of-the-art effects. Yet no sequel was developed until much more recently.

Mark L. Smith, who wrote ‘The Revenant’ and George Clooney’s ‘The Midnight Sky’, has crafted a script that reportedly focus on the now-grown daughter of Jo and Bill Harding, who is a chip off the old storm-chasing block.

Steven Spielberg (who was a producer on the 1996 movie) is said to be thrilled by the new screenplay and eager for the movie to be made. And all involved are hoping that they can tempt Hunt back in some capacity, even if just for a cameo. Paxton, of course, sadly died in 2017.

Despite early work kicking off on this one back in 2020, you can certainly point to ‘Maverick’ being a spur for fresh development on this front. And in fact, that movie’s director Joseph Kosinski was attached to what was then being described as a reboot.

Though Kosinski ended up leaving to focus on the Formula One racing movie he has in development at Apple with Brad Pitt starring, the behind-the-scenes team is still being led by producer Frank Marshall (his wife and fellow powerhouse producer Kathleen Kennedy worked on the original with Spielberg).

Now, ‘Minari’s Lee Isaac Chung is in the director’s chair and Edgar-Jones is most likely playing the daughter character. We’ll have to wait and see how Powell fits in.

In related ‘Twister’ sequel news, Daveed Diggs has spoken to Insider about another potential follow-up with which he was involved. Hunt stars in the ‘Blindspotting’ TV series that Diggs and Rafael Casal spun off from their indie movie. In 2021 they pitched the idea of Hunt directing a new take on ‘Twister’. But it didn’t happen, and Diggs has his suspicions as to why.

    Here’s what he said,

“Oh man, I’m not going to get into it mostly because I’m probably going to misremember things. But all I’ll say is there was an opportunity where we were talking about that, and it didn’t happen, and the reasons that it didn’t happen are potentially shady. But shady in the way that we know the industry is shady.”

The answer, my friends, is probably blowing in the wind.
