  • 76th Primetime Emmy Awards 2024 Winners

The 2024 Emmy Awards will air on ABC Sunday, Sept. 15th.
The 2024 Emmy Awards will air on ABC Sunday, Sept. 15th.

    Preview:

    • ‘The Bear,’ ‘Shogun’ and ‘Baby Reindeer were among the big winners at the 2024 Emmys
    • ‘Hacks’ was a surprise winner.
    • Dan and Eugene Levy hosted the night.

It might have been the second Emmys of 2024 (thanks to the strike-delayed first landing in January of this year), but otherwise it was business as usual for the TV Academy’s awards show.

Though there was the standard bout of repetition (‘The Bear’ won 11 awards, breaking its own record), while Billy Crudup and Jean Smart won more awards (for ‘The Morning Show’ and ‘Hacks respectively), there was still room for some surprises –– Lamorne Morris triumphed in the Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie category for ‘Fargo’ over Robert Downey Jr. for ‘The Sympathizer,’ while talking of ‘Hacks,’ it was the somewhat shocking (if welcome) winner in the Comedy Series arena over ‘The Bear.’

The other big winners were in the limited series category (even if one of them is in early development on its second season) as ‘Shogun’ and ‘Baby Reindeer’ nabbed multiple trophies. Jodie Foster won the first Emmy of her career for ‘True Detective: Night Country.’

Eugene and Dan Levy, the stars (and in Dan’s case, creator) of ‘Schitt’s Creek,’ hosted the evening, kicking off with a monologue that touched on the controversy of a constantly dramatic show like ‘The Bear’ dominating the comedy categories and the growing presence of big movie stars on TV thanks to the lesser episodic demands of streaming shows.

And the big watchword for the show could be “nostalgia,” since various categories were handed out by stars of former TV shows such as ‘The West Wing’ and ‘Happy Days’ or those who played particular types of characters such as cops or lawyers.

There was an impassioned, funny speech from John Leguizamo about representation on television and a welcome award for TV super-producer Greg Berlanti. More confusing additions? Having Jelly Roll perform the In Memoriam song.

Here, then, is the full list of winners for the evening:

Famously self-deprecating stand-up comedian and actor Richard Lewis, probably best known to wider audiences outside of the comedy world for his role on HBO series ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’, has died. He was 76.

Lewis, who had been dealing with a Parkinson’s diagnosis, suffered a heart attack at home on Tuesday night at his Los Angeles home.

Richard Lewis: Early Life and Career

Born in Brooklyn, New York City in 1947, Lewis studied marketing and communications from the Ohio State University and later found work as a librarian in the archives of the Museum of Modern Art.

His way into the world of comedy was via writing magazine articles and commercial copy as well as material for other comics. But he soon realized he could launch his own career, plying his trade in New York Clubs and securing appearances on the likes of ‘The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson’ and ‘The Sonny & Cher Show’.

With his grumpy comic persona, he soon gained the title “The Prince of Pain” and parlayed that in to a self-deprecating style that endeared him to audiences.

He made his screen acting debut in 1979’s ‘Diary of a Young Comic,’ and broke out further with comedy special ‘I’m in Pain,’ following it up with the HBO specials ‘I’m Exhausted’ ‘I’m Doomed’ and ‘Richard Lewis: The Magical Misery Tour’.

In 1989, Lewis landed a leading role in the ABC sitcom ‘Anything but Love,’ starring with Jamie Lee Curtis as coworkers at a Chicago magazine who fall in love. Lewis scored other ’90s sitcom roles in the short-lived ‘Daddy Dearest’ and ‘Hiller and Diller’ featuring Kevin Nealon.

His big screen career was more limited, but still entertaining, and he appeared in movies such as ‘Once Upon a Crime’, ‘Wagons East!’, ‘Leaving Las Vegas’, Mel Brooks’ ‘Robin Hood: Men in Tights’ and ‘The Wrong Guys’.

The role that Lewis will be best remembered for, though, is one loosely based on his long real-life friendship with creator/star Larry David, on improvisational HBO comedy series ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’.

Though he’s more used to cynical or wiseass jokes, ‘Curb’ creator and star Larry David shared some real emotion remembering his friend:

“Richard and I were born three days apart in the same hospital and for most of my life he’s been like a brother to me. He had that rare combination of being the funniest person and also the sweetest. But today he made me sob and for that I’ll never forgive him.”

Lewis, who has been brutally honest about his struggles with drugs and alcohol –– and who famously made the decision to get sober after the death of his friend John Candy in 1994 –– is survived by his wife, Joyce Lapinsky.

  • Philip Baker Hall Dies aged 90

Phillip Baker Hall in 2012’s ‘Argo.’

Philip Baker Hall, an actor for his hangdog expressions, gruff-but-kind demeanor, and undaunted acting ability, has died. He was 90.

Hall was born in Toledo, Ohio on September 30, 1931, served as a U.S. Army translator in Germany and worked as a high school teacher before trying his hand at acting. He didn’t in fact, give performing a shot until he was 30 years old.

After building a career on the New York stage, he relocated to Los Angeles and made his big-screen debut with an uncredited role in Michelangelo Antonioni’s 1970 film ‘Zabriskie Point.’

He also spent years as a guest star on shows such as ‘Good Times’ and ‘M*A*S*H,’ Hall but drew widespread notice on the stage for his performance as disgraced former President Nixon in the 1983 one-man play ‘Secret Honor’ at the Los Angeles Actors’ Theatre. He reprised the role on stage in Boston, Washington and off-Broadway, where he earned a Drama Desk nomination, and on the big screen in Robert Altman’s 1984 feature film adaptation.

His work continued steadily through the 1908s, as Hall had supporting roles in ‘Ghostbusters II,’ ‘Say Anything’ and ‘Midnight Run,’ on the big screen and ‘Miami Vice,’ ‘Benson’ and ‘Family Ties’ on TV.

Philip Baker Hall and Larry David on HBO's 'Curb Your Enthusiasm.'
(L to R) Philip Baker Hall and Larry David on HBO’s ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm.’

Hall proved equally adept at drama and comedy, appearing in nearly 200 film and television projects, as well as more than 100 roles in the theater throughout his six-decade career. Continuing to work late into his life, even as he required an oxygen tank at times due to his health issues, he made memorable appearances in a variety of movies films including several for Paul Thomas Anderson: ‘Hard Eight’, ‘Boogie Nights’ and ‘Magnolia’, plus the likes of ‘Bruce Almighty,’ ‘Zodiac’, as a CIA director in ‘Argo’ and as a cranky neighbor Walt Kleezak on the ABC sitcom ‘Modern Family’.

He famously showed up on ‘Seinfeld’ as a hard-boiled detective pursuing a 20-year-overdue library book, lambasting Jerry, and drawing new fans to his work. It was such a success that he returned for the series finale. And he went on to appear on ‘Seinfeld’ co-creator Larry David’s ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm

“So sad to hear that we’ve lost the great Philip Baker Hall,” director Greg Mottola said on Twitter. “I had the sublime pleasure of working with him twice. A fantastic actor, a lovely man, and nobody made Larry David break on camera as much as Phil. RIP”

Holly Wolfle Hall, the actor’s wife of nearly 40 years, on Monday said Hall died Sunday surrounded by loved ones in Glendale, California. Hall had apparently been well until a few weeks earlier, and spent his final days in warm spirits, reflecting on his life.

“His voice at the end was still just as powerful,” said Wolfle Hall, remarking that he’d never retired from acting.

He’s a huge loss to the community and to the world in general, and he’ll be sorely missed.

  • J.B. Smoove Joins ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ in Leading Role

    HBO

It looks like Marvel and Sony are serious about making upcoming sequel “Spider-Man: Far From Homefunnier than 2017’s “Homecoming”: Comedian J.B. Smoove has joined the film’s cast.

Deadline was first to report the news, revealing that Smoove will be playing “a lead in the ensemble.” Unfortunately for fans, that’s about as specific a description as they’re going to get for now, since in true top-secret MCU fashion, details about the character are being kept under lock and key. (Sony declined to comment on the trade’s scoop.)

Smoove, known to television audiences for his role as Leon long-running HBO mockumentary series “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” certainly ups the comedy cred on “Far From Home.” According to Deadline, he’ll film his part in the sequel before returning to shoot more “Curb.”

In addition to Smoove, Jake Gyllenhaal also recently joined the “Far From Home” cast. He’ll be playing the villain Mysterio.

Marvel is being typically cagey about the plot of the follow-up flick, but we do know that it will take place at least partially overseas, in international locales including London.  Filming is expected to start there later this year.

Tom Holland will reprise his titular role, and Michael Keaton, Zendaya, and Marisa Tomei are all expected to return as well. “Spider-Man: Far From Home” is due to web-sling its way into theaters on July 5, 2019.

  • ‘Saturday Night Live’ Host Larry David Blows Off Miley Cyrus in New Promo

Larry David can be pretty rude. Prettyyyyy, prettyyyy, prettyyyyy rude.

The “Curb Your Enthusiasm” star is hosting “Saturday Night Live” this week, November 4, with Miley Cyrus as musical guest. Since Miley has hosted herself, we can probably expect her to be in at least one sketch, the way she costars in the new SNL promo with Larry.

The clip is vintage Larry David. He runs into Miley on the way to the SNL studio, and refuses to ride in the same elevator with her because he prefers to ride alone.

Larry: “I like a private ride.”

    Miley: “Whatever, Larry.”

Larry: “Who gets an elevator all to themselves? It’s a fantastic thing.”

    Miley: “‘Private ride?’”

    This should be good.

SNL later shared another series of promos, with Larry, Miley, and cast member Beck Bennett:Larry David has made several appearances on SNL in the past couple of years, thanks to his spot-on Bernie Sanders impression, but he’s only hosted once before, in February 2016.

Fun fact, Larry David also had a cameo on Miley Cyrus’ Disney show, “Hannah Montana”: “Saturday Night Live” airs Saturdays at 11:29 p.m. on NBC.

  • Comedian Shelley Berman of ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ Dies at 92

Shelley Berman Comedian Curb Your Enthusiasm,” has died at age 92.

Deadline reports that Berman died early this morning of complications from Alzheimer’s at his home in Bell Canyon, CA. His wife of 70 years, Sarah, was by his side.

From 2002 to 2009, Berman appeared as Larry David’s father Nat on “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” a role that allowed him to do some of his famous improv.

His other memorable roles include Adam Sandler’s father in “Boston Legal.” He also guest-starred on “The Twilight Zone,” “The King of Queens,” and “Pushing Daisies,” and appeared in the films “The Holiday” and “Meet the Fockers.”

Berman got his start in the ’50s, where he was known as the “sit down” comic because he usually performed while seated on a stool. He’s being remembered as a comedy pioneer who paved the way for comics Bob Newhart, Woody Allen, and Jerry Seinfeld.

His 1959 live record “Inside Shelley Berman,” was the first comedy album be certified gold and was the first non-musical recording to win a Grammy Award, according to Variety.

Berman retired in 2014 after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease. A private service and a public memorial are being planned.

  • HBO Refuses to Play Hacker’s ‘Game’ After Leak of New ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ Episodes

HBO will not bend the knee to the hackers who keep leaking episodes and other sensitive information. The latest leak included episodes of the upcoming “Curb Your Enthusiasm” Season 9 — premiering on HBO on October 1 — as well as new episodes of “Insecure,” “Ballers,” and “The Deuce.”

That follows leaks of “Game of Thrones” script intel and internal documents, plus the posting of GoT Season 7, Episode 4 in advance, although that was unrelated to the ongoing HBO hack.

The hackers want money, and they’re doing this slow public drip of intel to pressure HBO to cave. So far, the network is not budging.

Here’s how HBO responded to the latest leak (via Variety):

“We are not in communication with the hacker and we’re not going to comment every time a new piece of information is released. It has been widely reported that there was a cyber incident at HBO. The hacker may continue to drop bits and pieces of stolen information in an attempt to generate media attention. That’s a game we’re not going to participate in. Obviously, no company wants their proprietary information stolen and released on the internet. Transparency with our employees, partners, and the creative talent that works with us has been our focus throughout this incident and will remain our focus as we move forward. This incident has not deterred us from ensuring HBO continues to do what we do best.”

The leaks certainly have not hurt “Game of Thrones,” which actually had its biggest audience ever for “The Spoils of War,” which was posted online three days in advance. It sucks that “Curb” got spoiled in advance, but the leak was reportedly of “several episodes,” not the full season. And even if fans track down leaked episodes, they’ll still want to watch the full season. It’s not like anyone is going to cancel his or her HBO subscription because they can possibly watch a low-quality episode ahead of time.

“Curb” Season 9 premieres Sunday, Oct. 1.

  • Topher Grace Made a Brilliant Fake ‘Seinfeld’ Reunion Episode

SeinfeldEveryone wants a “Seinfeld” reunion, but it’s about as likely to happen as that “Friends” reunion (read: never), so actor Topher Grace decided to make one himself.

Grace dabbles in film editing— a few years ago, he condensed the “Star Wars” prequels into a one, satisfying 85-minute movie. This time, he used his digital scissors to make a “Seinfeld” reunion episode. The audio is taken from season 7 of “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” which featured a plotline about a “Seinfeld” reboot. Grace splices it over still images from the show:

    Seinfeld Reunion

I edited all the Seinfeld scenes from Curb season 7 into one episode. It’s more like a radio play, but if you sew together all the dialogue from audition scenes, read-throughs and rehearsals together… a 9 minute hint at what the plot of a reunion might have been.

Posted by Topher Grace on Tuesday, February 23, 2016

It’s pretty genius, as Grace says, the result is a hint at how a reunion episode would turn out. Of course, we’ll probably never know what a real one would look like, so enjoy this for all it’s worth.

  • SNL’s ‘Bern Your Enthusiasm’ Is Pretty, Pretty, Pretty, Perfect

The only thing wrong with “Saturday Night Live” episode is that it makes us miss “Curb Your Enthusiasm” even more. David has already been a major star of this SNL season, thanks to his spot-on impression of Sen. Bernie Sanders. For the February 6 show, held just three days before the 2016 New Hampshire Primary, David didn’t do another debate performance, but he did play a very Larry David version of Bernie Sanders in the brilliant “Bern Your Enthusiasm” sketch.

It’s classic “Curb,” with Jay Pharoah knocking out another perfect impression as J.B. Smoove’s Leon, and Cecily Strong earning guffaws with a dead-on Susie Greene. That it blends the actual Iowa caucus result with the usual Larry David “Curb” behavior — including milk choice! — is award-worthy:

    Perfection.

Sen. Sanders showed up himself to mock the 1 percent, as embodied by Larry David, in a Titanic-like sketch called “Steam Ship”:

Overall, it was a pretty, pretayyyy, prettayyy, pretayyyy good night for Larry David. Do you think it will have any impact on Sen. Sanders’s votes, as late night appearances occasionally can, or was it just some good fun?

  • Why Some Bernie Sanders Fans Are Angry About Larry David’s ‘SNL’ Debate

“Saturday Night Live” was more than pretty, pretty good, but several Bernie backers were angered by this past weekend’s cold open debate sketch.

Larry’s portrayal was a hit, even with Bernie himself, who quipped to “Curb Your Enthusiasm” star at their next rally. “He does better than I do.” However, the Democratic Debate sketch was accused of being too pro Hillary Clinton. The real Hillary was on SNL earlier this season, and the SNL debate — which included Alec Baldwin as Jim Webb — was framed from the perspective of Hillary as the inevitable choice. The sketch even even had Kate McKinnon’s Hillary end her closing statement with the “sobering thought” that “If you get into bed with Bernie Sanders tonight, you’re going to wake up with Donald Trump tomorrow.” Larry David’s Sanders complained about podiums, then closed with, “Come next November, I will be … Hillary Clinton’s vice president!”

Here’s the sketch, see what you think:

Some Bernie fans got prickly about the portrayal, arguing that Bernie was mocked more than Hillary and SNL was being too pro Clinton. Many complained about that “vice president” line and then things spiraled into a heated debate, as they tend to on the Internet.

The SNL sketch has nearly 3 million views on YouTube — with more than 10,000 thumbs up, and just over 1,000 thumbs down. Here are a few of the more than 2,300 comments, both attacking and defending the Bernie portrayal:

    • Larry David’s portrayal of Bernie Sanders was horribly inaccurate. SNL should be ashamed of its attempt to smear the best candidate.

    • Maybe a few jokes about how Hillary is owned by the banks, or how her version of regulating the banks was to ”ask them to please stop robbing the people blind”, maybe how she flipped on all major issues, maybe a joke or two about how Bernie won all focus groups and online polling but still media claims Hillary won based on nothing…. Your trying to tell people here that Bernie can’t beat Trump, that he will be Hillarys VP on a comedy show, SNL go F yourself you corrupted losers..

    • Yeah, but I still don’t get the blatant pro-Hillary endorsement of SNL. Why does a comedy show push that capitalist offspring Hillary and not Sanders who seems to be the best vote for females, gays, minorities, middle-class, and many more, except the rich 1%?! @SNL: I’m really disappointed of you. Promoting the wrong politician just for a few cheap laughs.

    • I honestly didn’t like the last part. Bernie has been making it extremely clear that he’s not interested in being Hillary’s vp, nor bring her more to the left and the majority of people do indeed know that. Bernie is the real deal, people. But still, this was extremely funny!

    • If it were comedy they would not be picking sides would they… Since you know nothing about politics you failed to see how pro Hillary this ”sketch” was..

    • Why did they not poke fun at Hillary on real issues, like her changing her mind once a week, how she used to be anti gay now is their best friend, or how her campaign is payed for by bankers, or how her version of regulating banks was to tell them ”Please stop robbing the people blind” in 2007, or her voting record for example the Iraq war, her whole political life is a joke and they did not use any of it..

    • You hit it exactly. I’m not “butthurt” by this, just incredulous. Funny is funny but there was an obvious slant here, like an apology for poking fun at the anointed Clinton. The end was like them saying, “just kidding, Hil, you know we’re on your side”. SNL is as scared and whimpering as the trolls and Trumpsters here who believe the bullshit that Bernie’s common-sense and modern proposals are going to put us all in a gulag.

    • Well i watched SNL for a long time, what the mainstream media is doing to Bernie on the news is horrible, i did not expect to see this on SNL as well, if people say nothing it will just keep going. It was a clear endorsement of Hillary over Bernie specially if you follow media and their twist on the debate, you see SNL doing the same thing..

    • SNL has been lampooning Presidential candidates since the ’70s. If you think this was a smear-job, then how do you expect him to govern? Clinton and Bush both won two terms while being mocked far more savagely.

    • I’m all for Bernie, but why does his greatest fans seems to be so sensitive? You should be able to joke about him as much as anyone else.

“Butthurt” is one of the best words the Internet has ever given us, but it may be too juvenile to describe a serious political debate. Then again, this wasn’t meant to be a serious political debate, it was a comedy sketch where Hillary was mocked for basically being a programmed robot, Webb kept complaining about lack of time then had nothing to say, Bernie was given “Seinfeld” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm” mannerisms, and O’Malley (Taran Killam) and Chafee (Kyle Mooney) were brushed aside as non-events. If anyone should be mad, it’s Chafee and O’Malley backers … if there are any … but maybe Bernie backers are worried that the Tina Fey/Sarah Palin effect might take over and slant viewers’ perceptions.
