    • Craig Gillespie has entered talks to direct ‘Supergirl’.
    • Milly Alcock will star in the movie.
    • The film should be shooting later this year.

Things are moving –– or perhaps, given the main character, flying –– ahead for the ‘Supergirl’ movie. At least, if Deadline’s report ends up panning out.

Craig Gillespie, the director behind such movies as ‘I, Tonya’, ‘Cruella’ and, most recently, ‘Dumb Money’, is now in talks to direct the new take on Kara Zor-El for DC Studios.

What is the plan for the Supergirl movie?

While nothing has been formally confirmed, it appears that the Supergirl character (with Milly Alcock of ‘House of the Dragon’ in the part, will first crop up in a cameo in James Gunn’s ‘Superman’.

She’ll then appear in her own movie, which was announced alongside the rest of Gunn and Safran’s plan for the first wave of their new movie/TV universe.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ will be a big-scale sci-fi film based on Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s comic run. It features a “darker, harsher” version of Kara Zor-El raised on a surviving chunk of Krypton who sees everyone around her die.

This is what Gunn said at the time of the announcement:

“This is a very different type of Supergirl. In our film, we see the difference between Superman, who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from, you know, the time he’s an infant, versus Supergirl, who was raised on a rock chip-off of Krypton and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl and is much more hardcore. She’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re used to seeing.”

It would seem that the ‘Woman of Tomorrow’ subtitle has dropped off, but that may return.

    Who is making ‘Supergirl’?

DC Comics’ Supergirl. Photo courtesy of DC.com.

Ana Nogueira has been adapting the comic book with some input from King. Aside from her (plus Gunn and Peter Safran producing and DC executive vice president Chantal Nong as executive producer), that’s it for the team so far.

Gillespie brings a lot of experience to the table –– he’s directed several movies with female characters at their heart and is also adept at balancing tone.

When will ‘Supergirl’ be in theaters?

Warner Bros. has yet to lock down a release date for the movie; which is not a bad idea since zero footage exists for it yet. But the plan for production is for ‘Supergirl’ to kick off shooting later this year once Gunn has completed work on ‘Superman’ and the studio’s focus can switch to the other ‘Super’-character.

Disney has new plans for debuting two much-anticipated movies: Both “Cruella” and “The Woman in the Window” have been pushed to later theatrical release dates.

Out this fall was supposed to be “The Woman in the Window,” on Oct. 4. Now, however, the Amy Adams-starrer has been delayed to May 15, 2020, as Variety reports. Meanwhile, “Cruella,” the live-action film based on the infamous fur-coat-loving “One Hundred and One Dalmatians” villain, has given up its Dec. 23, 2020 slot for one on May 28, 2021.

There’s no word yet on what prompted the delay for “Cruella,” which stars Emma Stone. The “Woman in the Window” move comes as less of a surprise, though, per Deadline, as there are plans for reshoots. With its new release date, “The Woman in the Window” will now open the same weekend as Warner Bros.’s “Scooby” and Lionsgate’s untitled Saw film. It remains to be seen what competition “Cruella” will have.

Alas, we’ll have to settle in for longer waits.

Even a villain as evil as Cruella de Vil needs help, and now, she’s got some.

Joel Fry has joined Disney’s “Cruella,” Variety reports. He’ll play Jasper, one of the blundering henchmen who dognaps the adorable dalmatian puppies for the film’s fur-obsessed villainess. The cast already includes Emma Stone as Cruella de Vil, as well as Emma Thompson.

The upcoming film is an origin story centered on the well-known titular villainess. The most recent draft of the script was written by Tony McNamara, and Dana Fox wrote an earlier one. It’s based on earlier works as Disney’s “101 Dalmatians” franchise is itself based on Dodie Smith’s 1956 children’s novel “The Hundred and One Dalmatians.”

Fry comes to the project having starred in films such as “Yesterday” and “Requiem.” He’s also a “Game of Thrones” vet and a former star of the series “You, Me and the Apocalypse.” Additionally, he’ll be seen in the upcoming “Love, Wedding, Repeat.”

“Cruella” will be directed by Craig Gillespie, and its producers include Marc Platt, Kristin Burr, and Andrew Gunn. The film is scheduled to open in theaters on Dec. 23, 2020.

Two Emmas are better than one.

Emma Thompson is in talks to star opposite Emma Stone in Disney’s live-action “Cruella,” an origin story based on their animated classic “101 Dalmations,” according to Variety.

“101 Dalmations” already got a live-action version in 1996, with Glenn Close playing fashion designer Cruella.

The new project comes from “I, Tonya” director Craig Gillespie. Stone is playing the menacing, fur-coveting villain. It’s unknown what role Thompson would play. But since it’s an origin story, perhaps she could be Cruella’s mother or a mentor in the fashion world (think “Devil Wears Prada,” but much more evil).

Stone is coming off an Oscar-nominated turn in “The Favourite.” Thompson, meanwhile, has a busy summer ahead, starring in both “Late Night” and “Men in Black: International.”

I, Tonya” director Craig Gillespie is in talks to direct Emma Stone as evil, puppy-killing villainess Cruella de Vil.

According to Deadline, Alex Timbers, the acclaimed Broadway director-writer and co-creator of Amazon’s “Mozart in the Jungle,” was going to direct, but Disney wants to move up the production date.

With Timber tied up bringing “Beetlejuice” to Broadway, that means he has no time for the “101 Dalmatians” villainess.

Gillespie has been working on a remake of the Norwegian thriller “Thelma,” but would reportedly be available for this.

And he’s very much in demand after directing Allison Janney to a Best Supporting Actress Oscar in “I, Tonya,” which also netted a Best Actress nomination for Margot Robbie as infamous skater Tonya Harding.

Actually, now that we’re thinking about it, Janney would make a better Cruella than Emma Stone. But, of course Stone’s still a bigger box-office draw.

Glenn Close played the over-the-top villainess in two live-action ’90s Disney films. The original animated character was voiced by Betty Lou Gerson, who was also the narrator of Disney’s “Cinderella” (1950).
