Creative Arts Emmys 2018: John Legend Earns EGOT (and More Chrissy Teigen ‘Arthur’ Trolling)

    Chrissy Teigen/Twitter

This year’s Creative Arts Emmys had the distinction of crowning not one, not two, but three brand new members of the exclusive EGOT club, with John Legend, Andrew Lloyd Webber, and Tim Rice all snagging statuettes on Sunday night to complete their collection. And as usual, Legend’s wife, Chrissy Teigen, couldn’t help but take the opportunity to poke some fun at her husband.

Legend, Lloyd Webber, and Rice took home the Emmy for Best Live Variety Special for “Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert,” which they co-produced alongside Craig Zadan (the late prolific producer known for his work on “Chicago” and recent Oscars telecasts), Marc Platt, Neil Meron, Mike Jackson, Ty Stiklorius, Alex Rudzinski, and Javier Winnik. But it was the first three who had also previously won a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony, making them the 13th, 14th, and 15th members of the EGOT club.

Legend’s new status is of particular note, since he is the first African-American man to claim EGOT status. And at 39, he’s also one of the youngest people ever to earn the honor, following “Frozen” songwriter Robert Lopez, who was also 39 when he snagged his final piece of the EGOT crown (the 2014 Best Original Song Oscar, for “Let It Go”).

The multi-hyphenate shared his surprise and gratitude on social media, writing on Instagram that he was “amazed to be in such rarefied air.” Teigen’s reaction was more succinct, calling the trio “EGOT GOATS.”

But she saved the best commentary for last: Continuing to troll Legend over his resemblance to the titular aardvark on beloved kids series “Arthur.”

“And I say hey, what a wonderful kind of day,” Teigen captioned a video of Legend adding his Emmy to his already-crowded awards shelf. (For the uninitiated, those are lyrics from the “Arthur” theme song.) No word on whether or not she had to move any of her own awards out of the way, as previously promised.

Legend may want to do some additional rearranging: He’s up for yet another statuette, for Best Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for “Jesus Christ Superstar,” at next week’s primetime ceremony. That show is slated to air on September 17 on NBC.

Over a two-night ceremony, the 2018 Creative Arts Emmy Awards honored two late luminaries in Anthony Bourdain and producer Craig Zadan, with the former’s CNN travel docu-series “Parts Unknown” and the latter’s musical “Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert” taking home multiple awards.

The musical’s five trophies made EGOT winners out of star John Legend and original composers Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. They all have now won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony.

  • Lauren Graham Is Thrilled About Alexis Bledel’s Emmys Win, Too

Premiere Of Netflix's 'Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life' - ArrivalsAlexis Bledel nabbed her first Emmy award this weekend, for her guest starring role on Hulu series “The Handmaid’s Tale.” And while Bledel’s fans were happy for the actress, there was a certain someone else whose excitement for the star was even greater.

Gilmore Girls” costar, tweeted out her joy over Bledel’s big win in a post on Monday afternoon. Sharing a tweet from the Television Academy announcing the actress’s victory, Graham went all-caps to express her happiness for her onscreen daughter.

“THIS IS SO AWESOME,” Graham wrote, adding, “Congratulations and love!”

Though Netflix revival series “Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life” failed to nab any nominations, Bledel wasn’t the only Stars Hollow-adjacent performer to be recognized by the Television Academy this year: Melissa McCarthy — who had a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo in the revival — won the comedy guest starring statuette Sunday night (for hosting “Saturday Night Live,” but mostly, we assume, for her perfect portrayal of former White House press secretary Sean Spicer throughout the season). And Milo Ventimiglia is nominated for best actor in a drama (for “This Is Us”) at next Sunday’s main awards ceremony, too.

While we’re bummed that Graham failed to score a nom of her own (or Kelly Bishop, for that matter — Emily Gilmore would be outraged), we’re glad to see the “Gilmore” love go around. We’ll raise a giant mug of coffee to that.

  • ‘Game of Thrones’ Just Broke an Emmys Record (and Will Probably Break Another)

“Game of Thrones” is no stranger to breaking ratings records, and now, the series is branching out into breaking records in the awards category, too: The show just became the most-awarded drama series in Emmys history.

“Thrones” took home a whopping nine statuettes during the Creative Arts Emmy Awards this past weekend, winning trophies for visual effects, costuming, makeup, and sound, among other technical categories. It easily outpaced splashy second place finisher “The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story,” which walked away with four awards.

But that’s nothing compared to “GoT”‘s overall achievement: This weekend’s haul put it in sole possession of first place in the Emmys’ competition for most-decorated drama series ever, with a new total of 35 awards. To put that into perspective, just last year, “Thrones” was in a three-way tie with fellow prestige series “The West Wing” and “Hill Street Blues” for most-awarded drama, with 26 Emmys apiece. That’s already a jaw-dropping number of awards for any single series, and “GoT” just blew that record away in one night.

And it’s very likely to wind up winning even more awards at next Sunday’s main Emmys ceremony, and with them, another record: The most-awarded series ever, comedy or drama. Sitcom “Frasier” is the current champ, with 37 Emmys to its name. But “Thrones” is nominated for a staggering 23 additional awards, and it seems a safe bet that it will walk away with at least three, enough to snatch the title away from Frasier Crane and co.

Stay tuned, awards junkies. The 2016 Emmys air on September 18.
