Eddie Murphy Is a Blaxploitation Legend in ‘Dolemite Is My Name’ Trailer

    Netflix

Larger than life Blaxploitation icon Rudy Ray Moore could easily have been a character in one of his own films, and now, the pioneering comedian-musician-actor-producer is getting the star treatment as the subject of a new Netflix biopic, “Dolemite Is My Name.”

“Dolemite Is My Name” stars the perfectly cast Eddie Murphy as Moore, who toils for years as an obscure stand-up comic, releasing ridiculously obscene albums (sample title: “Eat Out More”) that gain a small but devoted cult following. Moore’s real goal is to become a film star, but his over-the-top ideas don’t exactly have studios lining up to finance his projects; instead, he decides to make a movie himself, based around his popular stand-up character Dolemite.

He enlists a rag-tag group of collaborators for the film “Dolemite,” which features the titular kung fu-fighting pimp getting framed for a crime, busting out of jail, and seeking revenge, with a group of butt-kicking prostitutes by his side. Wesley Snipes costars as D’Urville Martin, who Moore convinces to play the villain in the flick by also giving him the director job. Martin is more than a little skeptical, especially when he gets on set and sees firsthand how bonkers the project really is.

“Dolemite Is My Name” looks every bit as fun, graphic, and off-the-wall as “Dolemite,” and features an absolutely stacked supporting cast, including Keegan-Michael KeyCraig RobinsonMike EppsTituss Burgess, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, and Snoop Dogg. It’s set to debut at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, and hit theaters later this fall.

The cameras are officially rolling on the set of Ana Lily Amirpour‘s latest project, “Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon.” The film has started shooting in New Orleans, according to Deadline.

The star-studded cast boasts the likes of Kate Hudson, Craig Robinson, and Nicholas Hoult. More recent additions include Ed Skrein and Evan Whitten. On top of that, the film stars Korean actress Jun Jong-Seo in what is to be her first English-language film.

They’ll tell the story of a girl with unique but also dangerous powers who tries to make it on her own in New Orleans after escaping from a mental institution. Amirpour wrote the screenplay and is directing. Her most recent feature was 2017’s “The Bad Batch,” which starred Suki Waterhouse, Jason Momoa, and Keanu Reeves.

“Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon” is being executive produced by Wiip’s Luke Rodgers and Black Bicyle’s Erika Olde and Sam Roseme. Producers are Le Grisbi Productions’ John Lesher and Dylan Weathered as well as 141 Entertainment’s Adam and Robbie Mirels. So far, the release date hasn’t been announced, but this is a project we’re keeping an eye on.

  • Fox Cancels ‘Ghosted’ After One Season, With Three Episodes in Limbo

Welp, the truth is out there: “Ghosted” is now deceased.

That’s also it for Fox’s entire live-action comedy slate. The network is starting fresh this fall.

Fox has been slashing and burning everything in sight (including “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” and “Lucifer”), so it’s sad but not a huge shock to see the Adam Scott-Craig Robinson supernatural comedy get the chop.

However, Fox had ordered 16 episodes, and only 13 have aired as of last Sunday, June 24. TVLine said the show has been yanked from Fox’s Sunday schedule effective immediately, and a rep told them it’s “TBD” if/when the final three episodes will ever air.

“Ghosted” had a rough run through its first season, with Fox bringing in a new showrunner in Paul Lieberstein (“The Office”) to replace Kevin Etten halfway through Season 1.

Plus, as Deadline noted, “Ghosted” ghosted on fans during its own run:

“Ghosted was pulled off the schedule in April after nine of its 16-episode first season had run. The remaining seven — including the back six overseen by Lieberstein — started airing on June 10. As could be expected for most summer scripted series, Ghosted’s deliveries have been soft, between 1.1-1.4 million viewers and 0.4-0.5 adults 18-49 rating (Live+same day). It is unclear when the remaining three episodes will air.”

Here’s more from TheWrap on why “Ghosted” was axed:

“An individual with knowledge of the decision tells TheWrap that, while the network was ‘proud of the show,’ the addition of ‘Thursday Night Football,’ as well as new comedies on Fridays and Sundays, and the large amount of returning shows next season, Fox’s schedule couldn’t accommodate a second season of ‘Ghosted.’ However, a few unaired episodes from the first season may still become available for viewing at a later date.”

Fox is bringing back ABC’s “Last Man Standing” this fall, along with new comedies “The Cool Kids” and “Rel,” among other new offerings — including more sports.

  • Wesley Snipes, Craig Robinson Join Eddie Murphy in ‘Dolemite Is My Name!’

This cast is looking good: Wesley Snipes has joined Eddie Murphy in “Dolemite Is My Name!,” Netflix’s biopic of ’70s blaxploitation star Rudy Ray Moore.

Also on board: Craig Robinson, Mike Epps, Tituss Burgess (“Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”), and Da’Vine Joy Randolph, who received a Tony nomination for her role as psychic Oda Mae Brown in “Ghost the Musical.”

According to THR, production on the film begins this week in Los Angeles with “Hustle and Flow”‘s Craig Brewer directing.

Moore, who passed away in 2008, produced and starred in the 1975 movie “Dolemite,” as a pimp with a harem of kung fu-fighting hookers. Its tagline: “Bone-crushing, Skull-splitting, Brain-blasting ACTION!”

Murphy is playing Moore and Snipes is D’Urville Martin as “Dolemite”‘s director and villain.

The movie will debut on Netflix in 2019.

Snipes last appeared in Spike Lee’s “Chi-Raq” and the short-lived NBC series “The Player.”

Robinson stars on Fox’s “Ghosted.” No word yet if it’s been renewed or canceled.

“Next Friday” star Epps appeared in last year’s “Girls Trip” and next appears in “The Last Black Man in San Francisco.”

  • 10 Things You Need to Know Before You Watch ‘Mr. Robot’ Season 2

Rami Malek in MR ROBOT Season 2A lot of “Mr. Robot” viewers got a real sense of what reality-challenged lead character Elliot was feeling as the series’ phenomenal first season came to an end: did that really happen, or what? It did, and it’s about to happen again.

With the much anticipated Season 2 of the USA Network‘s hacker-centric sensation debuting July 13th, there’s plenty to know about what’s coming next — and yeah, that means spoilers aplenty from Season 1 loom ahead — now that our socially anxious anarchist Elliot has discovered, as we did, that even amid the twists and turns of his unusual life he’s maybe not the most reliable narrator to be had.

Let’s take a look at what audiences can expect from Season 2 of “Mr. Robot” … and it may go without saying, but “the unexpected” ranks pretty high.

    1. Elliott Will Look to Himself — and Mr. Robot — for AnswersRami Malek and Christian Slater in MR ROBOT Season 2If you had discovered that the mysterious techno-revolutionary you’d been talking to and taking direction from the entirety of a TV season was, in fact, actually a hallucinatory manifestation of your long-deceased father, you might have some pretty serious questions you’d like to ask yourself about the state of your mental and emotional health, right? So expect Elliot to delve deeper into himself — and Mr. Robot — in search of answers.

“I think the whole show has been about Elliot’s emotional journey, and I really wanted to focus on that and make it less about the plot,” series creator Sam Esmail told the press at USA’s Summer Press Day in May. “And so for me, the headline for Season 2 is ‘How do these two guys reconcile?’ How does Elliot reconcile the fact that he’s just been aware of that he’s seeing this fantasy? That’s the struggle that is going to kind of take over in Season 2.”

“It’s going to be about Elliot really negotiating with himself,” Esmail adds. “I mean, look, it’s about a guy who becomes aware of his delusion he’s been having. That’s a tough pill to swallow. And we are really going to go into the mind of a person who just has become aware of that and what is the next step to that. How do you reconcile that? Will twists organically derive of it? I don’t know — if I were a betting man, I would say ‘yes.’”

    2. There Will Be Plot Twists (But They’re NOT Trying to Shock You. No, Really!)Christian Slater and Rami Malek in MR ROBOT Season 2Throughout the first season, “Mr. Robot” never ceased to fire off gigantic, game-changing, didn’t-see-THAT-coming reveals that reshaped the show and left viewers’ jaws on the floor. So yes, there’ll likely be plenty more of those ahead, but Esmail promises that no matter how shocking, those revelatory moments aren’t just planted to make heads spin — they’re logical landmarks along Elliot’s path.

“I’m not interested in ‘gotcha’ moments or trying to shock the audience or surprise you — even though it happens,” says Esmail. “I think it really happens because Rami [Malek] brilliantly plays Elliot in a way that draws you into his psyche, so you’re learning it with him. As long as that’s organic, as long as that feels real, then I think the twists will come from there, but it’s not my agenda to keep shocking you. It really isn’t.”

    3. Malek Takes Elliot’s Reality — or Lack Thereof — Very SeriouslyRami Malek in MR ROBOT Season 2Star Malek revealed that while “enough was shared with me” about Elliot’s overall storyline, he has to keep himself limber, acting-wise, to process and deliver anything that Esmail might throw at him in the story.

“Going into this next season, I’ve been thinking, ‘How am I going to prepare for this?’” the actor explained. “I mean, I can’t just walk into the next season and say, ‘I’m just going to take off right where we left off, and…” You know? That’s just not the way I work. There’s a lot of preparation for me into wrapping my head around someone trying to figure out what’s going on in his brain and dealing with that. So that’s a lot of work that I am going to be spending time on — and it’s already giving me anxiety!”

“I have to prepare for anything at any given moment, and so I go through kind of every direction as to what possibly happened to someone like this, because in his head you never know what has happened,” Malek continued. “And I think having to trace back the truth and discover the truth ultimately makes him more complex to play, just trying to decipher what he’s actually seen and where he’s actually been. When I think about that, that kind of haunts me as a human being, having to do that.”

    4. Expect a Breakdown of Elliot’s BreakdownsRami Malek in MR ROBOT Season 2Along with the question of why Elliot’s psyche and memories so splintered, another enigma lingers: how long has this been going on? After all, it’s been clearly suggested this isn’t the first time he’s forgotten he has a sister. “In Season 2, there will be a lot more backstory that will be shown,” Esmail assured. “And to address that: yes, the time line is going to get a little clearer — not a hundred percent clearer, because what’s the fun in that? — but a little clearer, yeah.”

“This series is filling in the blanks of the past and the present and even, like, the future of this character,” he continued. “It’s almost like we keep stepping back: you know, you are this close to the painting. You take a step back, and then, you see another ‑‑ you see more of it. You take another step back. You see more of it. I think that’s how I’m approaching every season.”

    5. Minutia Matters!Carly Chaikin in MR ROBOT Season 2For the more obsessive fans among you, take note that you’re not imagining things yourself: those curious little discrepancies you’ve spotted here and there are in fact there for a reason! Like, did you wonder why, when you watched that Times Square sequence in which Elliot envisions his family and realized there’s no visible presence by his now-revealed sister Darlene’s younger self? “I had that same question!” admitted Carly Chaikin, who plays Darlene.

Yeah, that was a purposeful omission. As Esmail explained, while still playing his story cards close to the vest, “The answer is: Yes, there is a reason why she’s not in the Times Square sequence.’”

    6. Angela’s on the Razor’s EdgePortia Doubleday in MR ROBOT Season 2Will Angela become seduced and/or anesthetized by working within powerful Evil Corp, the very company she blames for the death of her mother? “That’s going to be a big question in the second season,” Esmail promised, who sees the dynamic Darlene and Angela’s Occupy Wall Street and Wall Street perspectives, respectively, as interesting and unique, especially as filtered through the eyes of two young women. ‘In terms of specifically Angela, that struggle is going to be what kind of overrides her character arc in the second season.”

“It was interesting, people’s responses at the end, because a lot of people were saying, ‘Oh, Angela has joined the dark side,’” said Portia Doubleday, who plays Angela. “What makes it really interesting is that I don’t think that she’s crossed over. I think that she’s more corrupted than she was in the beginning, but is she going to use that to aid her while being in the lions’ den? I think she might be in a little bit over her head, but it will be interesting if she can keep herself above water.”

    7. Whiterose Revisited?BD Wong and Rami Malek in MR ROBOT Season 1One of the most enigmatic and anticipated characters in Season 1 was the Dark Army hacker Whiterose, played by B.D. Wong — and the season’s final sequence strongly suggested that she’ll have an even stronger hand in Season 2. But in this case, expect the character’s bigger picture to be doled out in even smaller dribs and drabs than the show’s other zealously guarded secrets.

“[B.D. Wong] was so amazing in the first season,” marveled Esmail. “I would be stupid not to use him more this season, but I do have to use him sparingly because I think a lot of the thing that’s great about his character is he’s got such a great mystery around him.”

    8. It’s Esmail’s Vision, More Than EverMr. Robot, The 75th Annual Peabody Awards Ceremony Portraits, May 21, 2016Along with creating the series and writing several episodes, Esmail also got behind the camera to direct three first-season episodes, and he’s upping the ante considerably for Season 2: he’s directing all 12 episodes.

“Seeing the first season, I just have a very distinct visual style for the show,” he explained. “And for me it’s actually harder to collaborate when it comes to that aspect the show, so I just figured make it all … The show’s look is so singular that it kind of makes sense in the end, and actually in a weird way — and I know you are not going to believe this — I think it’s actually going to be easier on me.”

    9. Plenty of New Faces May — Or May Not — Be ThereCraig Robinson and Rami Malek in MR ROBOT Season 2Whether or not Mr. Robot recedes back into Elliot’s consciousness, there’ll be plenty of fresh new faces for the hacker-savant to contend with in Season 2, including American Horror Story: Freak Show”) as Dom DiPiero, an FBI agent probing Evil Corp; House of Cards”) as Susan Jacobs, Evil Corp’s counsel general who may hold the key to society’s success; hip hop artist Joey Bada$$ as Leon, a close friend of Elliot’s; and The Office”) as Ray, a man from Elliot’s neighborhood who reaches out to him in his time of crisis.

“I think Sam is into the idea of rediscoveries,” casting director Beth Bowling told Deadline. “He doesn’t want anything to feel like in the TV world, so he always wants to cast things differently than what people would necessarily think it would be.”

    10. Slater Saw That Big Reveal Coming Waaaaay Before You DidChristian Slater in MR ROBOT Season 2Not so much a tease, but a fun fact — and proof that the show always plays fair: something about Mr. Robot’s nature pinged Christian Slater‘s radar when he first read the original pilot script. “I thought the Mr. Robot character was very mysterious, and I remember, I said to my agent, “Do you think that guy is really there?’” the actor revealed. “And my agent was like, ‘Oh, come on! They would never do that! The show is called ‘Mr. Robot’ — it would be crazy!’”

But Slater couldn’t shake the notion, asking Esmail point-blank about the character’s reality during their very first meeting. “And he said, ‘You really want to know?’ And then he told me pretty much the whole outline of the thing,” recalled Slater. “I was so thrilled and so excited, and I think it put us on the same page from the get‑go. I remember, very much like Elliot throws his arms up at the end of the first episode, I think I did the same thing. I was like, ‘Yes! That’s so cool!’”

“Mr. Robot” Season 2 premieres Wednesday, July 13th at 10 p.m. on USA Network.

  • Here Comes NBC’s ‘Mr. Robinson’!

mr robinson craig robinson nbc“Mr. Robinson,” starring Craig Robinson, made its debut Wednesday, August 5th, on NBC. It’s about a part-time musician who gets a job as a part-time music teacher, all to reconnect with an old high school flame he stood up at his prom.

I liked the concept of “Mr. Robinson,” which shows a new high school music teacher (Robinson) who is more of a friend to the students than a teacher or disciplinarian. In one scene, he catches a kid on the school yard with a joint, but instead of having him expelled he takes the joint, chastises him a little, then dismisses him with a “now get yo little ass outta here.” Parts of the show were fun and funny and made me laugh (like that joint scene), but others (for those of you who had biology class) were about as fun and funny as watching fungi get freaky.

“Mr. Robinson” had its funny moments in the two episodes that aired but, it really needs to be funnier if it’s going to last. That said, I’m ready to tune in next week. This comedy has heart, and it’s fun to watch with the whole family. Kids will really like it and, perhaps, relate better to it than the adults in the room.

The premiere of “Mr. Robinson” drew NBC’s best summer comedy viewership since 2007, with 4.6 million viewers, and internet buzz says NBC ordered six episodes of Mr. Robinson. I hope we get to see episode 7, 8, and 20. Congrats, Craig Robinson!

  • Best of Late Night TV: Ryan Reynolds’ Racy TV-MA ‘Conan,’ Craig Robinson Sings ‘Chocolate Muffins’

If you’re like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don’t worry; we’ve got you covered. Here’s the best of what happened last night on late night.

By now, you may have seen the “Conan” Tuesday night. Ryan Reynolds was the night’s big guest and the whole show went TV-MA for the R-rated movie trailer. Conan said it was the first time ever in the history of the show for them to get that rating. The benefits of cable! “In other words, ladies and gentleman, tonight we can really f–king cut loose.” (That had to be bleeped, though.) Andy Richter also openly gave Conan the finger instead of secretly giving it under his desk, like he normally does.

Did you know that Deadpool saved Conan’s life? Watch that play out in the (hilarious) video below, which features panda tears and Conan’s bony lack of a rear-end. (“Where’s your ass?!” “It’s not my fault!” “Medic!”) Mr. Blake Lively had a lot to say during his “Conan” visit. He talked about being a father and how he was kind of a smartass to his own dad, taking a pic of his own penis with his dad’s camera. (!) Ryan said his father used to take hundreds of photos of dumb things and e-mail them (using dial-up) to everyone. So one time, when Ryan was about 18, he grabbed the camera and went into the bathroom and took a dick pic. He just wanted to see if his dad would see and edit the photo before it went out. But nope — it went out to everyone.

Speaking of TV-MA, Gordon Ramsay, Matilda Ramsay, Josh Charles, and Milky Chance were on “The Late Late Show with James Corden” and James said the last time Gordon was a guest, it was the most bleeped show they’d ever had. It had 27 bleeps, 19 of which were from Gordon. So Gordon and Josh both swore even more, and James proudly showed off the Idiot Sandwich meme that went viral after Gordon’s chef sketch with Julie Chen.
Here’s a must-see: “The Office” alum Craig Robinson performed a song called “Chocolate Muffins” on “Late Night with Seth Meyers,” as part of the promotion for his new show “Mr. Robinson.” “Damn, girl, it’s getting hot in here from all this pre-heating…”

Kate Mara was on “The Tonight Show” — she seemed a bit nervous — and told Jimmy Fallon she found out she was cast in “Fantastic Four” via Twitter. So sometimes Twitter can be helpful! There’s a clip from the movie in the video below. She also suggested anyone who hasn’t seen “House of Cards” yet should just leave and go watch it. True.

The legend that is Don Rickles was on “The Tonight Show” and heckled Jimmy Fallon and The Roots. He just had a few backhanded compliments and constructive criticism.

  • Your Guide to TV’s Biggest New Summer Shows

    %Slideshow-284449%
Summer doesn’t have to just be all reruns and binge-watching when it comes to TV — there’s a whole slew of brand new programming just waiting to be watched. 2015’s roster features the outrageous game show and variety stunt events that you might expect from a summer slate (one of them even involves human darts, but more on that later), but there are also series just around the corner that feature major players like David Duchovny, Jack Black, and Jane Fonda. Not sure what you might want to sample this season? We’ve rounded up some of summer’s biggest new TV shows, so you can learn more and find out exactly when you can catch ’em.

  • Best of Late Night TV: Snoop Dogg’s Plizzanet Earth and Craig Robinson’s Jam Session (VIDEO)

If you’re like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don’t worry; we’ve got you covered. Here’s the best of what happened last night on late night.

Time for another addition of Plizzanet Earth with Snoop Dogg, who stopped by “Jimmy Kimmel Live” to muse on –– what else? An enormous cold-blood seal humping an innocent penguin. It goes without saying that his profound thoughts are not to be missed. Also, why hasn’t Animal Planet picked up this show yet?

Kelly Ripa also stopped by “Kimmel,” and Jimmy shared a super old-school clip of her chatting about how men and women should alternate paying for dinner. Sigh, a progressive feminist even when rocking an 80s perm and a turtleneck, guys. Also, please prepare yourself for the best dance moves you’ve ever seen.

Time for a game of Word Sneak on “The Tonight Show!” This week’s contestant was comedy legend Martin Short, who had to work random words into a casual conversation with Jimmy Fallon. Our favorites include Bill Paxton, fishsticks, enchiladas and back hair.

Mae Whitman visited “Late Night” (sob, RIP “Parenthood”), and told Seth Meyers that she’s made out with not one, not two, but three “Friday Night Lights” cast members. Living the dream, to be honest.

Over on “Late Show,” Don Cheadle chatted about the first time he went to The Oscars and was told by some angry paparazzi to “get the f–– out of the way” because Cher and Jack Nicholson were coming through. Honestly, it’s a realistic hazard of trying to share the spotlight with Cher.

Finally, Craig Robinson, Clark Duke and Adam Scott teamed up on “Conan” to play a live rendition of the song from Flashdance…only with customized lyrics about “Hot Tub Time Machine 2.” It was literally, utterly and completely amazing. And no, those electric guitars are not plugged in.
