Stephen King began writing ‘The Long Walk’ in 1966, at the age of 19, while a student at the University of Maine, and eventually published it 13 years later under the pseudonym Richard Bachman. Rediscovered after his Bachman cover was blown in 1984, ‘The Long Walk’ has since been acclaimed as one of King’s finest early novels and a frightening depiction of a totalitarian future in which citizens are mere fodder for the regime (at the time King wrote it, it was an allegory for the Vietnam War).

A film version has long been in development, but has now finally arrived from director Francis Lawrence, who has been traversing similar territory with his adaptations of the ‘Hunger Games’ books (which owe a clear debt to this and King’s other early dystopian work, ‘The Running Man’). We’re pleased to report that ‘The Long Walk’ is easily one of the finest King-based films ever, capturing the harrowing intensity of the narrative as well as the camaraderie that develops between its characters, especially the warm friendship between its two leads that gives the story a powerful emotional gut punch.

At some point in the indeterminate (but not too distant) future, the United States has been taken over by a totalitarian regime that annually stages a contest called the Long Walk, in which 50 young men must walk from Maine to Florida without stopping. If you stop for any reason or fall below the required pace of three miles per hour, you are given a warning. If you reach three warnings and do not resume walking at the correct speed, you are executed. The last walker alive wins, and is given a lifetime of freedom, riches, and opportunities.

‘The Long Walk’ focuses in particular on two of the boys thrust into this hellish marathon: Ray Garraty (Cooper Hoffman) and Peter McVries (David Jonsson), who quickly forge a friendship that McVries in particular extends to a number of the other contestants. Even as others on the Walk try to sabotage them, and despite the malevolent presence of the Major (Mark Hamill), the mysterious figurehead who presides over the Walk, a group of the boys manage to keep each other going – all while the Walk takes a horrific and increasingly fatal physical toll.

In theory, ‘The Long Walk’ might not work onscreen, given the straightforward nature of the narrative and the ever-tightening if repetitive cycle of death as more and more contestants succumb to their doom. But Lawrence and screenwriter JT Mollner (‘Strange Darling’) keep the focus squarely on the characters, particularly Garraty and McVries, as we learn more about them and watch them turn from frightened, uncertain pawns into something resembling, of all things, a resistance.

It’s the human element that powers ‘The Long Walk,’ although the horror of the situation is never far away. And while we don’t gain very much knowledge about this version of the U.S., the bleak, decrepit, empty homes and storefronts we see along the way – along with the scattered, hollow-eyed observers on the side of the road – tell us all we need to know about a dying nation ruled by cruelty and distraction. Lawrence and Mollner make some cosmetic changes to the material – and alter the book’s ambiguous ending in a way that we’re not sure is totally successful – but capture the tone of King’s work perfectly.

While some of Lawrence’s movies have left us cold in the past – particularly the later ‘Hunger Games’ entries – ‘The Long Walk’ is suffused with a sense of sadness and loss, coupled with the utter brutality of the regime and the way it mercilessly dispatches the walkers who can’t go the distance. But there’s also the warmth of friends and the bond of a shared experience, brought achingly to life by the cast.

    Cast and Performances

(L to R) Cooper Hoffman as Garraty and David Jonsson as McVries in ‘The Long Walk’. Photo Credit: Murray Close.

David Jonsson has been on viewers’ radars thanks primarily to his main role on ‘Industry’ and his standout work as the android Andy in last year’s ‘Alien: Romulus,’ but he comes fully into his own here as McVries. His mix of optimism, cynicism, courage, and bravado makes the character incredibly appealing and watchable, and his performance is moving enough to be awards-worthy down the line.

Cooper Hoffman has only a handful of credits since making his debut in 2021’s ‘Licorice Pizza,’ but ‘The Long Walk’ may also represent his finest work so far. Garraty is the critical character in the sense that he’s the protagonist who changes the most over the course of the Walk – prodded along by McVries. But his naturalism as Garraty and the chemistry that he and Jonsson share is the engine of the story.

The rest of the cast, almost to a man, step up even when they have little more than an agonizing death scene. But standouts include Garrett Wareing as the villainous Stebbins, Charlie Plummer as the dissolute Barkovich, Ben Wang as the irritating (but heartbreaking) Hank Olson, and Joshua Odjick as the noble Collie Parker. Judy Greer is excellent in her relatively small screen time as Garraty’s mom, and while we appreciate Mark Hamill showing up in his second King movie of the year (after ‘The Life of Chuck’), we wish his work as the Major was a bit more subdued in its menace than over-the-top.

    Final Thoughts

Stephen King is having a banner year on screen: with the acidic ‘The Monkey’ and the excellent ‘The Life of Chuck’ already released and Edgar Wright’s version of ‘The Running Man’ due out in November, ‘The Long Walk’ will nevertheless be difficult to beat. It may well be one of the best movies of 2025, in addition to being possibly the best King adaptation of the year.

Francis Lawrence and JT Mollner have not forgotten that King’s work is not just about the scares or the premise, but the people. ‘The Long Walk’ poignantly chronicles how human beings can find hope and comfort in each other in the darkest of circumstances, a theme that’s even more bracing and timely now as the United States slips terrifyingly toward the kind of scenario postulated in the film. Even as it doesn’t provide answers, it does offer a glimpse of a light in the darkness – and what people will endure to keep walking toward that light.

‘The Long Walk’ receives a score of 90 out of 100.

Luca Guadagnino is one of those directors who can always attract solid talent, and often seems to work with rising stars.

For his latest, ‘Artificial’, the filmmaker already has quite the crop either locked down or circling –– Andrew Garfield, Monica Barbaro, Jason Schwartzman Cooper Koch and ‘Anora’ breakout Yura Borisov among them.

The latest to enter talks? ‘Licorice Pizza’s Cooper Hoffman, and ‘The Studio’s Ike Barinholtz.

Nothing has been official released yet, but Guadagnino reportedly considered several scripts before landing on Simon Rich’s (‘An American Pickle’) about the wild true story surrounding OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.

He co-founded OpenAI, but in the fall of 2023, after mounting safety concerns regarding AI, and reports of abusive behavior, was ousted as the head of the company by his board.

Five days later, after a revolt, he was reinstated in a story reminiscent of the return of Steve Jobs to Apple.

If all goes as planned, Garfield will play Altman, Barbaro will be chief technology officer Mira Murati, and Borisov has the role of Ilya Sutskever, a co-founder who led the movement to get rid of Altman.

We don’t yet know who Hoffman or Koch will be, but Barinholtz is in talks to be Elon Musk, who… well, does he really need an introduction these days after the last few months. At least it’s a good casting choice: Barinholtz is good at playing smug weirdos.

Along with Garfield, the new project marks a reunion for Guadagnino and Amazon, having made ‘After the Hunt’ and last year’s sizzling tennis drama ‘Challengers’ for the company.

What else is Luca Guadagnino working on?

As talked about above, the director had been busy developing ‘Sgt. Rock,’ which adapts the DC Comics character for the big screen. Daniel Craig reportedly considered the lead, but Guadagnino was locking in on Colin Farrell to star.

Yet weather conditions have reportedly stymied the production, and the aim is to have it rolling cameras next year –– though not with Guadagnino aboard.

Beyond that, he has a variety of other potential movies waiting in the wings, including a new adaptation of ‘American Psycho’ and romantic drama ‘Separate Rooms.’

When will ‘Artificial’ be in theaters?

Though ‘Artificial’ is clearly coming together fairly quickly, Amazon MGM Studios has yet to hand out a release date for the movie.

Guadagnino’s latest, the aforementioned ‘After The Hunt,’ which stars Garfield alongside Julia Roberts and Chloë Sevigny, is scheduled to arrive in theaters on October 17th, signaling a potential awards contender.

Every year, fifty teenage boys meet for an event known throughout the country as “The Long Walk.”

Among this year’s chosen crop is sixteen-year-old Ray Garraty (Hoffman). He knows the rules: that warnings are issued if you fall under speed, stumble, sit down. That after three warnings… you get your ticket.

And what happens then serves as a chilling reminder that there can be only one winner in the Walk. The one that survives.

What happened at ‘The Long Walk’s panel?

The movie’s panel opened with the latest trailer and then a soldier taking the stage with a loud hailer to explain the premise of the walk to the audience.

Producer Roy Lee and writer JT Mollner were first up on the panel, with Lee praising Mollner’s script for getting the movie made after years in development.

For his part, Mollner recounted underlining dialogue from the book he wanted to use –– suffice to say, he underlined a lot!

Joining them on stage were the likes of Hamill, Wareing, David Jonsson, Tut Nyuot and other cast. The early banter between the young actors in particular was mostly enthusiastic descriptions of their characters’ arcs and praise for their co-stars’ skills.

Hamill revealed that Stephen King had casting approval –– and specifically wanted him to play the character of the Mayor, who oversees the Walk. For his part, Hamill wanted to dehumanize the character as much as possible.

Lawrence and Ben Wang weren’t present at the panel –– they’re both at work on ‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’ –– but they sent a video praising their colleagues and hyping ‘The Long Walk’.

The panel wrapped up with a screening of the first 22 minutes of the movie. Tense stuff!

‘Old Guy’ receives 4.5 out of 10 stars.

Opening in theaters February 21 is ‘Old Guy,’ directed by Simon West and starring Christoph Waltz, Lucy Liu, Cooper Hoffman, Desmond Eastwood, Ann Akinjirin, and Kate Katzman.

    Initial Thoughts

Is there anything left to say in the crime genre, more specifically in stories about hitmen? Well, last year’s ‘Hit Man,’ in fact, tried some different, sexy, and refreshing things, but this year’s ‘Old Guy’ seems content to recycle the same old tropes that we’ve seen a million times before.

Directed by Simon West – best known for disposable action fests like ‘Con Air,’ the first ‘Tomb Raider,’ and ‘The Expendables 2’ – ‘Old Guy’ isn’t exactly awful, and has some great actors in it. Yet it lives up to its title by exuding exhaustion from every frame. The progression of the plot is easy to predict from the word “go,” and the movie offers nothing particularly insightful or witty to counteract that. It’s the kind of material that you might find yourself second-screening on Netflix one day, and if that’s enough, then ‘Old Guy’ might be for you.

Danny Dolinski (Christoph Waltz) is an aging, legendary hitman just coming back from surgery on his hand. Since it was his gun hand, Danny’s been unable to work for a couple of months, but when he shows up at the British countryside home of his boss Opal (Ann Akinjirin) ready for duty, he’s in for a shock: with Danny getting older and potentially less effective, she’s teaming him with a young killer named Wihlborg (Cooper Hoffman) who she wants Danny to train and observe in the field, although Danny senses that he’s ultimately going to be replaced.

Naturally, Danny does not take to this well, especially when Wihlborg turns out to be a croc-wearing, nail-painting hipster who looks like he’d be more at home at a Marias concert than the bars and nightclubs Danny likes to frequent. Unlike his would-be mentor, Wihlborg doesn’t drink, smoke, or show much interest in women (even being around alcohol makes him “uncomfortable,” he says) and takes his work very seriously: “This is a craft for me. Actually more like an art,” he tells Danny, who quickly retorts: “We’re no artists. We’re sanitation workers. We take out the garbage.”

Typically, their first job together – which takes them to Belfast — does not go according to plan: Danny has Wihlborg wait in the car against Opal’s wishes, but when he screws up the kill due to his hand still healing, Wihlborg comes on the scene and dispatches the target and two bodyguards with ruthless efficiency. As a result, Danny develops a grudging respect for his younger partner, while still offering him advice when needed.

It turns out that the pair are going to need each other. That first target was the No. 3 man in a Belfast-based crime organization that Opal wants to take out so that she can consolidate her own empire. The next targets are Nos. 1 and 2. But there’s also a mole inside Opal’s organization who betrays everyone – forcing Danny and Wihlborg to work together to save their own skins. Also involved in all this is Anata (Lucy Liu), a bar owner who’s Danny’s weapon supplier and his great unrequited love. She improbably comes along on the trip to Belfast for a date with a doctor she’s met there — Danny is squarely in the friend zone for her — but it’s not long before her life is in danger as well.

Much of ‘Old Guy’ is taken up by the usual double-crosses, shootouts, chases, standoffs and escapes, with Danny finding his mojo again as the stakes are raised for him, Anata, and Wihlborg. The best thing we can say is that West shoots it all efficiently enough, with some gorgeous Northern Ireland scenery to gaze at when the action upfront falls flat, which is often the case.

    The Cast and Performances

Ever since veteran Austrian-German actor Christoph Waltz burst into Hollywood with his stunning performance as the sadistic SS officer Hans Landa in Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Inglourious Basterds’ in 2009, his career on this side of the Atlantic has been a checkered one. While winning the Oscar for both ‘Basterds’ and his second Tarantino performance as King Schultz in 2012’s ‘Django Unchained,’ Waltz has also turned in scenery-chewing, hammy work in films like ‘The Green Hornet,’ ‘Downsizing,’ and the last two James Bond film, where he played an unfortunately reinvented Blofeld.

Waltz can be an engaging, charismatic presence, and is a bit more restrained in ‘Old Guy’ than he’s been before. But the character is a cliché: the aging assassin who still has a moral code but finds the world moving past him, he’s disdainful of rules dictating what he can and can’t say, suspicious of people who don’t like to drink as prodigiously as him, and wary of working for criminals who treat their regimes almost as corporate entities. We’ve seen this before, and Waltz doesn’t offer any surprises in the role.

More interesting is Cooper Hoffman’s Wihlborg, although the idea that a young fellow who wears pajama pants on jobs can be taken seriously as a killer is a bit of a stretch. But rising star Hoffman does bring some shading to a somewhat underwritten role, showing some glimpses of the psychopath lurking under his soft exterior who’s at one point willing to kill a child.

On the other hand, the fabulous Lucy Liu is wasted in her role as Anata, the love interest who comes along on the ride for no other reason than to be placed in danger so that Danny can rescue her and make her realize that he’s been there for her all along. Liu is always magnetic to watch, but she deserves better and seems disinterested in this one-dimensional role.

    Final Thoughts

Crime as a numbers-crunching game, gangsters who still go home to see mom, wise-cracking banter, and hip-sounding needle drops – all elements that have played out over and over again in better movies. Even a cast that features top names like Waltz, Liu, and Hoffman can’t do anything but make this somewhat more watchable, although you know what’s going to happen every step of the way.

If there’s any word that describes ‘Old Guy,’ it’s “unambitious.” As we suggested earlier, this is the kind of movie that ends up as streaming fodder, perfect for background noise on a weekend afternoon while you do other things. It’s a shame that the cast and filmmakers can’t do much to rise above that.

What is the plot of ‘Old Guy’?

An aging assassin (Christoph Waltz ) is teamed up by his boss with a younger, brasher killer (Cooper Hoffman) to ostensibly train him, but suspects that he’s ultimately going to be ‘retired’ by his prodigal partner. The two must work together to stay alive, however, when they’re betrayed from within the company itself.

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with Christoph Waltz and Lucy Liu about their work on ‘Old Guy’, their first reactions to the screenplay, their characters, Danny and Anata’s friendship, Danny’s reluctant partnership with his replacement, and working with Cooper Hoffman.

Moviefone: To begin with, Christoph, what was your first reaction to the screenplay and what appealed to you about playing this character?

Christoph Waltz: Frankly, it’s been a while, so I don’t really recall my first reaction, but somewhere during the events I must have thought, “Yeah, I can do that.” I liked that he’s old and that he must deal with it. He does and that’s inspiring. I’m practicing.

MF: Lucy, what was your first reaction to the screenplay and what was your approach to playing Anata?

Lucy Liu: Well, knowing that Christoph was already connected to the movie was exciting to me. When I read the role of Anata, I really thought that she was just the right amount of condiment in the movie. They didn’t need a lot more. The amount of spice that she added and the connection that she had was enough. Because a lot of people said, “It’s a smaller role.” But I think that the relationship is really between him and Wihlborg. I liked that she was not the main event and that she came on board and was sort of the third wheel, and that it became something much deeper. I also love the idea of doing independent movies. It gets less diluted because sometimes when you’re working on a bigger movie, there’s so many people giving their thoughts and their opinions, it starts to lose what you originally read. I think Simon was able to hold onto what he had originally.

MF: Lucy, can you talk about Anata’s friendship with Danny and what she sees in him?

LL: I think she’s great. She’s very raw, and I think she doesn’t want to be vulnerable, but it turns out that she is, and it hurts. I think she’s passed her prime, and I think that when that gentleman says to her, “We can still go back to the hotel,” she realizes he just thinks of her as a prostitute, nothing more than that. Like a good time and it really destroys her and breaks her heart.

MF: Christoph, can you talk about Danny’s reluctant partnership with Wihlborg, who is the person sent to replace him?

CW: I can, but you won’t understand. You’re too young. The moment comes when you’re being pushed aside, and not because you’re lacking anything other than maybe muscle tone. But you have more experience, you have seen how the world works, all of that. Yet you’re being pushed aside because someone just is younger than you are, which is not a good reason. Interestingly in industry, and I hesitate to say normal society because I think that concept is going out the window, but in any case, in our lives, you see that. Sure enough, youth does have to take over sooner or later. That does not necessarily mean that the generation above must be pushed aside. Those are the reasonable arguments. The unreasonable emotional argument is, it hurts to be discarded, to be thrown on the heap with the rest of the old iron. It hurts and it’s difficult to come to terms with that hurt.

Opening in theaters everywhere on October 11th is the biographical comedy ‘Saturday Night’, which chronicles the 90-minutes leading up to the premiere of ‘Saturday Night Live’.

Directed by Jason Reitman (‘Juno’, ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’), the film stars Gabriel LaBelle (‘The Fabelmans’) as Lorne Michaels, Cooper Hoffman (‘Licorice Pizza’) as NBC executive Dick Ebersol, Rachel Sennott (‘Bottoms’) as writer Rosie Shuster, Cory Michael Smith (‘Gotham’) as Chevy Chase, Dylan O’Brien (‘American Assassin’) as Dan Aykroyd, Lamorne Morris (‘Jumanji: The Next Level’) as Garrett Morris, Ella Hunt (‘Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1’) as Gilda Radner, Emily Fairn (‘Mary & George’) as Laraine Newman, Kim Matula (‘Fighting with My Family’) as Jane Curtin and Matt Wood as John Belushi.

‘Saturday Night’, director Jason Reitman’s loving tribute to the 50-year television institution that Lorne Michaels’ created is fun, fast-paced and thoroughly entertaining. The film plays like a greatest-hits of all the behind-the-scenes stories and sketches from the first year of ‘SNL’, within the confines of the 90-minutes leading up to the premiere episode in 1975. While Reitman certainly took creative liberties with the facts, the film is exciting to watch and probably his best movie to date.

    Script and Direction

Director Jason Reitman on the set of Columbia Pictures' 'Saturday Night.'
Director Jason Reitman on the set of Columbia Pictures’ ‘Saturday Night.’

Unfolding in real-time, ‘Saturday Night’ tells the story of the 90-minutes leading up to the premiere of the first episode in 1975 and literally ends after the first sketch and Chevy Chase says, “Live from New York, it’s Saturday Night’.

The movie begins by introducing us to a frantic Lorne Michaels (Gabriel LaBelle), who is dealing with a handful of problems including nervous NBC executives, a missing John Belushi (Matt Wood), over 3-hours of sketches to cut down into 90 minutes and the fact that he still doesn’t know what the show is going to be. Pressuring Michaels to cancel the live-broadcast and air a tape instead is NBC executives Dick Eborsol (Cooper Hoffman) and David Tebet (Willem Dafoe), who has ulterior motives for hiring Michaels in the first place.

We soon meet cast members including Chevy Chase (Cory Michael Smith), who already thinks he is a superstar. We also meet Garrett Morris (Lamorne Morris), who as the oldest member of the cast and mostly a dramatic actor and playwright, has no idea why he is there. In addition to meeting the rest of the cast, we also see a young Billy Crystal (Nicholas Podany) who was promised a spot on the show, and a confused Andy Kaufman (Nicholas Braun) arriving for his appearance. Finally, we meet writer and Michaels’ wife, Rosie Schuster (Rachel Sennott), who is trying to calm the cast down and decide if she wants to be credited with her married name.

(L to R) Cinematographer Eric Steelberg and Director Jason Reitman on the set of Columbia Pictures' 'Saturday Night'.
(L to R) Cinematographer Eric Steelberg and Director Jason Reitman on the set of Columbia Pictures’ ‘Saturday Night’.

Reitman clearly has a lot of love for ‘Saturday Night Live’ and the original cast, I would imagine partly because his father, the late director Ivan Reitman (‘Ghostbusters’) had worked with most of them in Toronto before they were cast on the show, which makes Jason the perfect person to tell this specific story. Rather than doing the usual biopic that follows the creation and casting of the series, and maybe even chronicle the entire 50-year history, Reitman wisely focused on the hour and a half before the first broadcast. The movie fits in all the legendary stories that fans have heard over the years, while also finding time for glimpses of most of the sketches that would end up featuring in that episode and later in the first season.

While Reitman takes some liberties with the facts, the film is none the less fascinating to watch. However, there was more time spent with certain characters like Garrett Morris and Billy Crystal than needed, and I thought it took away from exploring the main cast. In fact, except for Morris, most of the original cast members don’t have as much screen time as you would expect, especially Belushi, although I think they were trying to use the character sparingly like Spielberg did with the shark in ‘Jaws’. However, it still kind of works because we as an audience have so much nostalgia for the show and already basically know who Chevy Chase, Dan Aykroyd, Gilda Radner and the rest are. But I wonder how well this movie would have worked if it was an original story and we had no history with these characters or this show.

    Performances

Lamorne Morris as Garrett Morris in 'Saturday Night'. Photo: Sony Pictures.
Lamorne Morris as Garrett Morris in ‘Saturday Night’. Photo: Sony Pictures.

The actors playing the original ‘SNL’ cast are excellent, truly working as an ensemble as no one actor stands-out, but again, this is also one of the problems with the movie as we really are not given enough time with any of them to really get to know them. Lamorne Morris probably has the most screen time and brings vulnerability to the character of Garret Morris (no relation).

While not in the movie nearly enough, Cory Michael Smith is excellent as an arrogant Chevy Chase. Kim Matula was very intriguing as Jane Curtain, but again didn’t have enough to do and the same can be said for Dylan O’Brian as Aykroyd, Emily Fain as Newman, Ella Hunt as Radner and Matt Wood as Belushi.

The character we spend the most time with is of course Lorne Michaels, but we never really get the feeling that we know him. That’s not actor Gabriel LaBelle’s fault, and I would argue that he played the role perfectly. The problem is that the character of Lorne Michaels is aloof to begin with, and there is no way to truly understand his genius.

But the love story (if you can call it that) between Michaels and Rosie Shuster helps to give the audience a little insight into his character and their relationship. In fact, Rachel Sennott lights up the screen as Shuster and gives one of the brightest performances in the film. It’s also worth mentioning Cooper Hoffman as Dick Ebersol and Willem Dafoe as David Tebet, respectively, as both actors give solid performances but, in the end, just act as the antagonists.

Part of the fun of the movie is watching the cameos, including ‘Succession’ actor Nicholas Braun who is unrecognizable as both Andy Kaufman and Jim Henson, who people forget was technically a member of the original cast. Oscar-winner J.K. Simmons also steals his one scene as legendary comedian Milton Berle who Chase catches successfully hitting on his girlfriend Jacqueline Carlin (Kaia Gerber). Other strong cameos include Paul Rust who is a dead ringer for Paul Schaffer, Taylor Gray as an amusing Al Franken, Jon Batiste as musical guest Billy Preston, and Matthew Rhys as an unpleasant George Carlin, who hosted the first episode.

    Final Thoughts

In the end, ‘Saturday Night’ is probably the best possible version of this movie that someone could make, and the best film of Jason Reitman’s career so far. I would think that the film will certainly be on the shortlist for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Screenplay at next year’s Oscars, but unfortunately, no one performance stands-out enough to be nominated. Whether you are a diehard fan of ‘Saturday Night Live’ or have never seen an episode (that’s hard to believe), you will enjoy this fun, funny and fast-paced film, which is a perfect tribute to the comedic television institution that is celebrating its 50th anniversary next year.

‘Saturday Night’ receives 8.5 out of 10 stars.

So when he returns with a new project, you know he’ll be provocative once more. And from the sounds of ‘I Want Your Sex’, which has enlisted ‘Licorice Pizza’ breakout Cooper Hoffman and Olivia Wilde to star, it definitely falls into that category.

Here’s the synopsis, as reported by Variety:

“When fresh-faced Elliot (Hoffman) lands an exciting job for renowned artist, icon and provocateur Erika Tracy (Wilde), his fantasies come true as Erika taps him to become her sexual muse. But Elliot soon finds himself out of his depth as Erika takes him on a journey more profound than he ever could have imagined, into a world of sex, obsession, power, betrayal and murder.”

As for Hoffman –– who also happens to be the son of acclaimed, late actor Philip Seymour Hoffman –– he’s already started to make his own mark on movies, kicking off his career with, as mentioned, Paul Thomas Anderson’s 2021 drama ‘Licorice Pizza.’

He’s since scored roles in ‘Wildcat,’ Jason Reitman’s upcoming film about the first broadcast of TV comedy stalwart ‘Saturday Night Live’ called ‘Saturday Night’ and Stephen King novel adaptation ‘The Long Walk’.

    • The film has now landed an October release date.

Jason Reitman might have been busy of late either co-writing and directing (in the case of ‘Afterlife’) or co-writing and producing (on ‘Frozen Empire’) the continuation of his father Ivan’s much-loved ‘Ghostbusters’ franchise.

Yet he’s also found time to work on another passion project, a chronicle of the tough birth of long-running (the series’ 50th season kicks off in the fall) sketch show ‘Saturday Night Live’.

    JZIH4xpQ3DHYK0rfRhtF43

With a script by Reitman and his regular ‘Ghostbusters’ collaborator Gil Kenan, he’s been wrapped filming for a while on the movie, now titled ‘Saturday Night’, and Sony has handed down an October release date for what is expected to start its run at festivals and –– depending on critical reaction –– could be taking aim at the awards season.

Surely Sony hopes that one of the cast, which includes Dylan O’Brien, Lamorne Morris and ‘Licorice Pizza’s Cooper Hoffman, might end up hosting an episode of ‘SNL’ itself to promote the new movie.

On October 11, 1975, a ferocious troupe of young comedians and writers changed television forever. ‘Saturday Night’ is the true story of what happened behind the scenes that night in the moments leading up to the first broadcast of NBC’s ‘SNL’. It depicts the chaos and magic of a revolution that almost wasn’t, counting down the minutes in real time to the infamous words, “Live from New York, it’s Saturday Night!”

The screenplay is based on an extensive series of interviews conducted by Reitman and Kenan with all the living cast, writers and crew.

There are also those behind the scenes of ‘Saturday Night Live’, with Gabriel LaBelle playing Lorne Michaels, the legendary creator and producer of the show whose eye for talent has led to careers for a host of people, with Hoffman as Dick Ebersol, an ambitious NBC executive who helped shepherd the show to air.

Rachel Sennott will be Rosie Shuster, a Canadian comedy writer and actor who was married to Michaels at the time and worked on the show.

Finally, we have Willem Dafoe as David Tebet, Vice President of Talent Relations at NBC, and because it surely wouldn’t be a Reitman movie without him, J.K. Simmons as Milton Berle, who had a famously awful one-night stint as host and ended up banned from the show (though that was in 1979, so it remains to be seen how he ties into the movie’s story of the first night).

When will ‘Saturday Night’ be in theaters?

Sony, which produced the new movie, has now set an October 11th release for ‘Saturday Night’ via its Columbia Pictures arm. There is already talk that it could premiere at the Toronto Film Festival. And that release, as you might have noticed from its mention in the earlier section, is the same day as the first episode of ‘SNL’ itself. Fitting!

  • Review: ‘Licorice Pizza’ Is Paul Thomas Anderson’s Latest Masterpiece

Alana Haim and Cooper Hoffman in 'Licorice Pizza'
Alana Haim and Cooper Hoffman in ‘Licorice Pizza’

Opening in theaters on November 26th is acclaimed filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson’s ninth feature film, ‘Licorice Pizza.’ The movie fallows the story of a teenage actor growing up in the San Fernando Valley in the early 1970s, who falls in love with a twenty-five-year-old woman while working together on several different business ventures over the course of a summer. The movie boasts an excellent cast including musician Alana Haim (from the rock group Haim), Cooper Hoffman (son of the late Philip Seymour Hoffman), Benny Safdie (‘Good Time’), Bradley Cooper (‘A Star is Born’), Tom Waits (‘Seven Psychopaths’), and Oscar winner Sean Penn (‘Milk’). The result is Paul Thomas Anderson’s unique version of a romcom, a brilliant and tender film about growing up, with Oscar worthy performances from both Alana Haim and Bradley Cooper.

The film begins by introducing us to Gary Valentine (Hoffman), a 15-year-old actor and entrepreneur living in Encino, California in the early 1970s. He soon meets Alana Kane (Haim), a 25-yeard old woman working dead-end jobs with no plans for her future. Gary professes his love to Alana right away, who of course rejects him due to his age, but the two become fast friends. Throughout the summer, they audition for films together, start a waterbed company, and even work for Joel Wachs’ (Safdie) mayoral campaign. They also meet several celebrities including actress Lucille Doolittle (Christine Ebersole), actor Jack Holden (Penn), director Rex Blau (Waits), and Barbara Streisand’s boyfriend, Jon Peters (Cooper). As their friendship grows, each becomes jealous of the other when they both begin dating people their own age, and this tears a rift in their relationship and businesses together. Eventually, they both realize how much they truly care for each other.

I’m a big fan of Paul Thomas Anderson, and remember seeing ‘Magnolia’ for the first time and thinking, “Someday, this guy is going to make the great American movie, but this isn’t quite it.” Then, less than ten years later, I watched ‘There Will Be Blood’ and said, “Wow, he did it. He made the quintessential American film.” Paul Thomas Anderson is one of the greatest directors of my lifetime, right up there with Quentin Tarantino, Spike Lee, Christopher Nolan, Wes Anderson and the Coen Brothers. ‘Licorice Pizza’ is one of Paul Thomas Anderson’s best films, right up there with ‘There Will Be Blood,’ ‘Boogie Nights and ‘Inherent Vice.’ It’s basically Anderson’s version of a romantic comedy, and a sort of modern day ‘Harold & Maude.’ While the difference in age between Gary and Alana is problematic, Anderson handles it in such a sweet and innocent way that you almost forgive the filmmaker for even “going there.” It also helps that Alana rejects Gary’s attempts at love throughout most of the film.

‘Licorice Pizza’ also marks the second time this year we’ve seen the son of a late actor taking on a role that their father might have done had they been alive and age appropriate. We saw this first when James Gandolfini’s son Michael played a young Tony Soprano in ‘The Many Saints of Newark,’ and now with Cooper Hoffman, whose late father, Oscar winner Philip Seymour Hoffman was a constant collaborator with Anderson. I have to admit that through most of the movie I did not like the character of Gary and found him to be annoying, but I think that was the point. I’d compare him to Jason Schwartzman’s character in ‘Rushmore.’ So, in that sense, Hoffman did a great job creating a very irritating character that you don’t really care for through a majority of the movie. But what the young actor does that is truly incredible is that he turns you around before the end of the film and makes you feel sympathy and really root for his character. You should definitely keep an eye on Cooper Hoffman, I think he is going to have a long career.

But the big discovery in ‘Licorice Pizza’ is the brilliant and layered work done by musician turned actress Alana Haim. She absolutely lights up the screen and steals every scene she is in. She carries the weight of the film and gives one of the best performances of the year. The actress is absolutely commanding in the movie and has fantastic chemistry with Hoffman. Haim definitely deserves an Academy Award nomination, and in a very tough year, I hope she will not be forgotten. She’s fun, smart, tough, vulnerable, and makes it all look effortless. It’s also worth mentioning that Haim’s real-life sisters and bandmates play her sisters in the movie, and their real-life parents also have roles as their parents.

Bradley Cooper gives an Oscar worthy and very funny performance as an out-of-control Jon Peters. He’s not in a lot of the movie, but just enough to be considered for a Best Supporting Oscar nom. But I did find it interesting that Anderson chose to change a lot of the celebrity’s names, like Lucille Ball is now Lucille Doolittle and William Holden is Jack Holden, but he didn’t change Jon Peters’ name, and I’d be curious to know why, especially since he is the only “real person” that comes off looking bad in the film. Sean Penn is also very strong as Jack Holden and has some fun scenes with a motorcycle and Tom Waits, who is clearly channeling John Huston. There are also some really fun cameos including Anderson’s wife, Maya Rudolph, comedic actor John Michael Higgins, Sasha Spielberg (daughter of Steven) and George DiCaprio (father of Leonardo).

While the movie is supposedly loosely based on the childhood of Tom Hanks’ producing partner Gary Goetzman, Anderson also grew up in the San Fernando Valley in the 70s and clearly put some of his own experience in the movie. The director also captures the feeling of the 70s perfectly, a changing time both culturally and politically, which the film reflects, especially with the 1970s gas crisis looming in the background. In the end, Paul Thomas Anderson has delivered another masterpiece with ‘Licorice Pizza,’ an entertaining, funny, and sweet film about the fleetingness of youth and love, in a love letter to his own youth and the city he loves.

‘Licorice Pizza’ receives 4.5 out of 5 stars.
