  • ‘Fantastic Beasts’ Starts Filming: New Details on Harry Potter Spinoff

And so it begins! Principal photography has started on “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” starring Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne, directed by “Harry Potter” veteran David Yates, and set in the wizarding world of J.K. Rowling. It’s exciting news, and by “exciting” we’re directly quoting the Harry Potter author herself, who just tweeted about the start of filming:

That “exciting” probably could’ve used more oomph, but who are we to question the queen? That tweet link led to a press release from Warner Bros. Pictures with more details on the movie. Here’s a portion of the release, which includes more casting news:

Filming started today, August 17, at Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden, under the direction of David Yates, who helmed the last four “Harry Potter” feature films.

Academy Award winner Eddie Redmayne (“The Theory of Everything”) stars as Newt Scamander, the wizarding world’s preeminent magizoologist, who stops in New York following his travels to find and document magical creatures.

“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” also stars Katherine Waterston (“Inherent Vice”) as Tina; Alison Sudol (“Dig,” “Transparent”) as Tina’s sister, Queenie; Tony Award winner Dan Fogler (“The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee”) as Jacob; Ezra Miller (“Trainwreck”) as Credence; two-time Oscar nominee Samantha Morton (“In America,” “Sweet and Lowdown”) as Mary Lou; Jenn Murray (“Brooklyn”) as Chastity; young newcomer Faith Wood-Blagrove as Modesty; and Colin Farrell (“True Detective”) as Graves.

Marking the screenwriting debut of J.K. Rowling, the script was inspired by her character Newt Scamander’s Hogwarts textbook, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

The film is being produced by David Heyman, producer of all eight of the blockbuster “Harry Potter” features; J.K. Rowling; Steve Kloves; and Lionel Wigram.

Warner Bros. Pictures has slated “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” for worldwide release in 3D and IMAX on November 18, 2016.”

J.K. Rowling had only just revealed, on August 15, the last names of two of those characters:

Now that filming has started, we’ll have to keep our eyes peeled for set photos, first footage, and other sneak peeks. Or perhaps we can just say “Accio updates!” and have it all arrive at our doorsteps.

Screening Of GKIDS' "Kahlil Gibran's The Prophet" - ArrivalsColin Farrell has a little magic up his sleeve.

  • Did ‘True Detective’ Pull a ‘Game of Thrones’ With Colin Farrell?

UPDATE: He didn’t die! But he did piss himself. He just had a couple of cracked ribs from the buckshot. Do you think that was that a cop out (no pun intended)?

*SPOILERS ahead from last night’s “True Detective” Season 2*

Only two episodes of “True Detective” Season 2 have aired on HBO, and we’re still trying to figure out the characters’ names and motivations (beyond a lot of scowling). At this point, we’re still following them as Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, Vince Vaughn, and Taylor Kitsch. And after Episode 2, “Night Finds You,” maybe there’s no Colin Farrell anymore?

Farrell plays Detective Ray Velcoro, opposite McAdams as Detective Ani Bezzerides, Kitsch as Officer Paul Woodrugh and Vaughn as criminal entrepreneur Frank Semyon. “Night Finds You” ended with Farrell’s Ray Velcoro shot multiple times by someone wearing a mask — a black bird mask. And it’s HBO. And a main character may or may not be dead. This is too close to “Game of Thrones” to ignore. Jon Snow just got stabbed by his fellow “crows” in the Season 5 finale and may or may not ever return. Farrell’s Ray Velcoro definitely got shot at close range, but did he die or not?

    Check it out:

    As Vanity Fair asked:

Did that really happen? Did a man in a raven mask really sneak up on Colin Farrell and put a couple of bullets in his chest in front of a copy of Araki. Tokyo Lucky Hole while Bobby Bland’s “I Pity the Fool” played in the background? Oh yes, and we’ll have to wait until next week to see if our lead detective made it out of the episode alive. That’s the kind of high-stakes batshittery we had come to expect from True Detective Season 1.”

This is one way to get people to tune in for Episode 3! The July 5 third episode, “Maybe Tomorrow,” has this synopsis from HBO: “Paul works the prostitute angle while Frank receives the first casualty in a secret war, and steps back into a world he’d left behind.”

Casualty? So did they just pull a Ned Stark, or is this more of a Jon Snow in that maybe Ray is not SO dead that he won’t come back anyway? Fans have mentioned seeing leaked photos of Colin on set in a shootout that has yet to air, so we can still hope that a vest saved Ray’s life.

  • Best of Late Night TV: Colin Farrell’s Confession and Taylor Schilling’s Sex Accident

If you’re like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don’t worry; we’ve got you covered. Here’s the best of what happened last night on late night.

“True Detective’s” second season starts this Sunday on HBO, so obviously the cast is making the rounds on Late Night. You know what that means: The Tonight Show,” and Jimmy Fallon had them sit down for a game of True Confessions (basically Two Truths and a Lie, only a little different). What did we learn? For starters, Colin Farrell was a murder suspect. Oh….

Calling all “Orange Is The New Black” fans! Late Night” to talk about getting injured during a sex scene. Apparently she got “very excited,” took her shirt off, and scratched her face. Gives a whole new meaning to the phrase “please practice safe sex.”

Meanwhile, Jimmy Kimmel Live,” and proceeded to break out his massage skills. Don’t worry, he’s simply started a service where people can get massaged by their favorite celebs, no bigs.

Over on “Conan,” Josh Hutcherson mused on how he went to Bonnaroo and easily avoided fans due to how…well… high they all were. Apparently, his devotees are an easily influenced bunch, bless their hearts.

  • ‘True Detective’ Season 2: See 4 Posters, Read New Details

Who says summer belongs to the blockbusters? HBO has us pumped to sit at home on June 21 for the premiere of “True Detective” Season 2. The second round is set in Los Angeles and follows three cops (played by Colin Farrell, Taylor Kitsch, and Rachel McAdam) and a criminal (Vince Vaughn). All four characters are featured from the noses down in these new posters:

Not sure why we’re being denied eye access but, as each image repeats, “WE GET THE WORLD WE DESERVE.” That could be good. That could be bad. Guessing bad, for now. “True Detective” creator and showrunner Nic Pizzolatto did a little Q&A with HBO, and even though we don’t learn many hard facts about Season 2, here are some excerpts:

HBO: Is there a relationship between the story of season two and the story of season one, or any connection between the seasons?
There’s no relationship between the stories or characters, which was the result of fully committing to something new, but I do think that the seasons have a deep, close bond in sensibility and vision, a similar soul, though this is a more complex world and field of characters.

HBO: Earlier last year, you said that this season was about ‘Bad men, hard women and the secret occult history of the U.S. transportation system.’ Is that still true?
It’s not, I’m afraid. There’s definitely bad men and hard women, but no secret occult history of the U.S. transportation system. That was a comment from very early in the process, and something I ended up discarding in favor of closer character work and a more grounded crime story. The complexity of the historical conspiracy first conceived detracted from the characters and their reality, I felt, and those characters are ultimately what have to shape the world and story. So I moved away from that.

HBO: What’s that music on the trailer? Where’d it come from?
That’s one of several original songs developed with T-Bone Burnett, as original music plays a much greater role this season. The reasons for that are probably best explained by seeing the show, but these songs will be revealed in full at a later date.

Watch the teaser again below. The music alone is reason enough to watch this show.

  • ‘True Detective’ Season 2 Has a Trailer and a Release Date (VIDEO)

    True Detective season 2
HBO dropped the first trailer for the second season of “True Detective” on Thursday, and also revealed when new episodes of the critically-acclaimed series are set to debut.

The wordless teaser features our first glimpses of Rachel McAdams, Vince Vaughn, Colin Farrell, Taylor Kitsch, and Kelly Reilly in character, and from the looks of it, everyone is absolutely miserable. Several characters burst into tears throughout the short clip, Farrell — who sports a pretty spectacular mustache — puts on some brass knuckles, and Kitsch appears to be suffering some sort of mental breakdown.

That seems about right for the dark series, which this season features a corrupt police department (led by Farrell, McAdams, and Kitsch) teaming up with a floundering mob boss (Vaughn) to solve a murder. Based on this first clip, that task won’t be easy on anyone — least of all on the involved parties’ psyches.

“True Detective” season two is slated to premiere on June 21 on HBO.
