This week marks one year since we lost legendary film actor Christopher Plummer. Best known to several generations as Georg von Trapp in ‘The Sound of Music,’ Plummer’s acting career spanned over 70 years before the actor died last year at the age of 91.

The actor has appeared in countless movies including ‘The Man Who Would Be King,’ ‘Dragnet,’ ‘Malcolm X,‘ ‘Twelve Monkeys,’ ‘A Beautiful Mind,’ ‘Syriana,’ ‘Up,’ ‘The Last Station,’ ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,’ and 2010’s ‘Beginners,’ for which he won Best Supporting Actor at the Academy Awards.

With the anniversary of the late actor’s passing upon us, let’s look back at eight of the greatest performances of Christopher Plummer’s long and acclaimed career.

    The Sound of Music

The film is set in the years before the Second World War and follows Maria (Julie Andrews), a tomboyish postulant at an Austrian abbey who becomes a governess in the home of a widowed naval captain (Plummer) with seven children. Before too long, Maria reintroduces the love of life and music into their home.

This is the role that made Plummer a household name, and the music from the movie is still iconic to this day. However, the actor technically doesn’t sing in the film, as his voice was dubbed over by musician Bill Lee.

The Return of the Pink Panther

(L to R) Herbert Lom, Christopher Plummer, Peter Sellers, and Catherine Schell in ‘The Return of the Pink Panther’

The forth in the series, and widely considered the best, ‘The Return of the Pink Panther‘ features star Peter Sellers also returning to the role after an absence. The famous Pink Panther jewel has once again been stolen and Inspector Clouseau is called in to catch the thief, who he is convinced is his old rival, the Phantom. Plummer plays Sir Charles Litton, also known as the Phantom, a role previously played by David Niven in the other films.

    Star Trek: The Undiscovered Country

Christopher Plummer in ‘Star Trek VI: The Undiscoverd Country’

Plummer was no stranger to genre movies, having starred in ‘Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country‘ opposite original cast members William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy.

The film’s plot serves as an allegory for the Cold War, with the Federation and the Klingon empire on the verge of peace, when an unexpected attack puts everything in jeopardy. Plummer plays Chang, a one-eyed Klingon general, and is widely considered (right behind Ricardo Montalban) as one of the best villains ever to appear in a Star Trek movie.

In this 1999 movie from director Michael Mann (‘Heat‘), Plummer co-stars with Russell Crowe and Al Pacino as ’60 Minutes’ host, Mike Wallace. The movie tells the true story of the CBS news series’ exposé of the tobacco industry, as seen through the eyes of whistleblower, Jeffrey Wigand (Crowe). The movie went on to earn seven Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture.

    Inside Man

One of director Spike Lee‘s best movies, ‘Inside Man‘ follows Denzel Washington as Detective Kieth Frazier, who must negotiate with a bank robber (Clive Owen) that has taken hostages at a Manhattan bank.

But no one is who they seem, including the Mayor’s mysterious friend (Jodie Foster), who is a little too eager to help Detective Frazier with the situation. Or the bank’s shady owner played by Plummer, who is keeping some deep, dark secrets of his own.

Directed by Mike Mills, this is the film that finally earned Plummer his long overdue Academy Award. He won Best Supporting Actor for playing Hal, a man that comes out of the closet at the age of 75 after his wife’s death. Ewan McGregor plays his son, and the film is told from his point of view in flashbacks, after Hal’s death.

All the Money in the World

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit,
(L to R) Christopher Plummer and Mark Wahlberg in ‘All the Money in the World’

While it did earn Plummer his third and final Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor, ‘All the Money in the World‘ is infamous for how and why Plummer received the role. The movie follows the story of the real life kidnapping of 16-year-old John Paul Getty III, the grandson of billionaire Jean Paul Getty, who refuses to pay the ransom.

The role of John Paul Getty was originally played by Kevin Spacey. When his scandal broke, just months before the release of the film, director Ridley Scott decided to recast the part with Plummer and reshoot a large amount of the movie.

    Christopher Plummer in ‘Knives Out’

One of Christopher Plummer’s final film roles was in director Rian Johnson‘s extremely successful mystery-comedy, ‘Knives Out.’ The movie tells the story of renowned crime novelist Harlan Thrombey (Plummer), who is found dead at his estate just after his 85th birthday.

Enter the inquisitive and debonair Detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig), who is mysteriously enlisted to investigate. Blanc begins questioning Harlan’s dysfunctional family, and with the help of Harlan’s nurse, Marta (Ana de Armas), who has a physical condition that will not allow her to tell a lie, he eventually discovers the true murderer.

‘Knives Out’ Trailer Teases Rian Johnson’s Star-Studded Murder Mystery

    Lionsgate

Whodunnit? It might be any one of the seemingly dozens of big-name stars in Rian Johnson’s murder mystery “Knives Out.”

Lionsgate dropped the first trailer for the film, which represents a return for Johnson to more intimate genre pieces after making “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.” The director started his career with character-focused movies like “Looper” and “The Brothers Bloom,” as well as acclaimed TV episodes like “Breaking Bad’s” “Ozymandias.”

In “Knives Out,” a family gathering goes horribly wrong when the patriarch, Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer), dies. Daniel Craig and Lakeith Stanfield play two detectives who investigate the death and discover all sorts of twisted family secrets. Among the suspects are Harlan’s daughter Linda (Jamie Lee Curtis), son Walt (Michael Shannon), and grandson Ransom (Chris Evans).

That’s just the start of the star-studded cast, which also includes Ana de Armas, Toni Collette, Don Johnson, Katherine Langford, and Jaeden Martell.

“The idea was to take everything I love about a great Agatha Christie story and put it into a new original story set in modern-day America,” Johnson told Entertainment Weekly.

The trailer exhibits a fun, madcap, zany tone. It’s definitely cool to see Evans and Craig, in particular, step so far outside the roles that have defined them (Captain America and James Bond).

“Knives Out” opens in theaters November 27.

  • Rian Johnson’s Star-Studded ‘Knives Out’ Lands 2019 Release Date

Rian Johnson’s Star-Studded ‘Knives Out’ Lands 2019 Release Date

    Sony Pictures Entertainment

How do you follow making a “Star Wars” movie? Direct a film starring James Bond, Captain America, and the Queen of Horror, naturally.

That’s exactly what “The Last Jedi” helmer Rian Johnson is doing with his latest project, “Knives Out,” and now, the star-studded flick has a release date. Deadline reports that the film is set to open on November 27, 2019, which is the day before Thanksgiving.

Though little is known about the murder mystery so far, Johnson has said that it’s inspired by the work of acclaimed author Agatha Christie, and it centers around a detective trying to solve a murder. Daniel Craig plays the lead, and the rest of the ridiculously impressive cast includes (deep breath) Chris Evans, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Shannon, Lakeith Stanfield, Toni Collette, Ana de Armas, Christopher Plummer, Katherine Langford, and Don Johnson. Phew.

Representatives for Lionsgate, which is distributing the film, are understandably excited for the project. One exec told Deadline that “Knives Out” “redefines the detective movie genre in a cool and original way” and is a “big, crowd-pleasing” flick.

Sounds perfect to us. We’ll be ready to take it in next November.

  • ‘Knives Out” Adds Christopher Plummer to Already Impressive Cast

‘Knives Out” Adds Christopher Plummer to Already Impressive Cast

    TriStar Pictures

The latest big name to sign on to Rian Johnson‘s thriller “Knives Out” is Oscar winner Christopher Plummer.

The stellar cast already includes Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Lakeith Stanfield, Michael Shannon, Don Johnson, Jamie Lee Curtis, Toni Collette and Ana de Armas.

Craig stars as a modern-day detective on a more than usually mysterious case.

As with the rest of the cast, we don’t know what role Plummer will play. But, for what it’s worth, he did once play a Jack-the-Ripper-hunting Sherlock Holmes in 1979’s “Murder By Decree.

Production began this week on the film, which is said to be in the vein of Johnson’s films “Brick” and “Looper.”

Plummer last starred as billionaire J.Paul Getty in the Ridley Scott drama “All the Money in the World.”  At age 88, that earned him his third Oscar nomination and set a record for oldest acting nominee. He won the Best Supporting  Actor Oscar for 2010’s “Beginners.”

  • Mark Wahlberg Paid $1.5M for Reshoots, But Michelle Williams Paid Under $1K: Report

Premiere Of Sony Pictures Entertainment's 'All The Money In The World' - Red CarpetWeirdly enough, they are represented by the same agency. Not for long?

Mark Wahlberg and Michelle Williams costar in “All the Money in the World,” which went through some quick reshoots when Kevin Spacey was dropped as J. Paul Getty and Christopher Plummer stepped in.

Michelle Williams, Christopher Plummer, and director Ridley Scott went on to be nominated at this past weekend’s Golden Globe Awards.

Williams plays Gail Harris, the mother of the kidnapped John Paul Getty III, with Wahlberg as the former CIA operative who works as her advisor. She actually has top billing. But USA Today just reported that Wahlberg was paid $1.5 million for reshooting his scenes while Williams was paid an $80 per diem totaling less than $1,000.

When reports came out about the reshoots, Ridley Scott had told USA Today the crew got paid, and Plummer got paid, but the other actors “all came in free.” (“Free” meaning just the union minimum, which is around what Williams was paid in that per diem.) However, USA Today just reported that they “since learned Wahlberg’s team actually negotiated a hefty fee, with the actor paid $1.5 million for his reshoots. Williams wasn’t told.”

She wasn’t told. Maybe they didn’t tell Ridley Scott, either? You could fairly suspect Wahlberg just had a better agent, but here’s what USA Today added on that front:

“Wahlberg and Williams are both represented by the William Morris Endeavor agency. Actors pay a team of agents, managers and lawyers an average of 10% of their salaries to advocate for them.”

Reps for the agency and the director didn’t respond to the outlet’s request for comment.

Social media was not happy with the situation:

Wahlberg has his defenders, with fans arguing he just used his leverage to get money; Williams could’ve demanded money but offered to work for nothing to keep the film’s costs down and support the message:

Such a Slytherin answer, but it’s true. Weird that no one told Michelle Williams, though. Or her agents in the same company? And maybe Ridley Scott didn’t know when he said in interviews that they all came back for free.

In related news, Wahlberg was recently named 2017’s most overpaid actor, by Forbes:

“Thanks to a string of box office disappointments, Wahlberg is this year’s most overpaid actor: His three wide releases prior to June 1, 2017, returned just $4.40 at the box office for every $1 he was paid on them. With disappointments including 2016’s oil spill drama Deepwater Horizon, which barely out-earned its estimated $110 million budget, Wahlberg’s multi-million dollar paydays look mighty expensive.”

He must have the best agent ever. Forbes added that the 2017 ranking was “dominated by stars such as Wahlberg whose historic success has warranted eight figure quotes, even when their recent movies fail to perform.”

At some point, though, you’d think that would stop.

  • Golden Globes ‘High-Key Petty’ to Nominate Christopher Plummer for Reshot Kevin Spacey Role

13th Annual Monte Cristo Awards - InsideIt’s savage. It’s kinda funny, too, until you realize Patrick Stewart could’ve had that spot for “Logan.”

The 2018 Golden Globe nominations came out this morning, and director Ridley Scott‘s “All the Money in the World” picked up nominations for himself as director, Michelle Williams for best actress in a drama, and Chrisopher Plummer for best supporting actor.

The Plummer one was especially surprising since he famously took over that role in November, after the movie was already finished, when Ridley Scott decided to replace Kevin Spacey. Scott did some very quick reshoots to keep the film’s December 22 release date, which was eventually changed to Christmas Day itself.

So, somehow — in the past few weeks — Ridley Scott reshot and edited the film, put out a new trailer, and got screeners out to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for awards consideration?

The nominations, especially for Plummer, felt like more of a slap to Kevin Spacey than an award for Christopher Plummer, no matter how good he probably is in the movie. (And when is he ever not good?)

It’s true that the Golden Globes are the “fun” awards show — known for boozy speeches and the insular HFPA’s adoration of famous names — as opposed to the more respected and serious Academy Awards. Fans can judge Plummer’s performance as J. Paul Getty when “All the Money in the World” opens on December 25. The 2018 Golden Globe Awards will air Sunday, January 7 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on NBC.

  • See Christopher Plummer as Kevin Spacey’s Movie Replacement in New Trailer & Poster

Hot damn, that Ridley Scott works fast.

“All the Money in the World” was already done, and director Ridley Scott was just finalizing the music, when all of the allegations against Kevin Spacey came out. Spacey had completely transformed to play J. Paul Getty in the movie. But Scott told Entertainment Weekly, after thinking about it, he realized they couldn’t go ahead with Spacey. “You can’t tolerate any kind of behavior like that. And it will affect the film. We cannot let one person’s action affect the good work of all these other people. It’s that simple.”

A flurry of phone calls to agents took place, and Scott flew to New York to meet with Christopher Plummer. Plummer and the original cast members — including Mark Wahlberg and Michelle Williams — gathered to reshoot scenes, with Plummer in Spacey’s role as J. Paul Getty.

This was just a few weeks ago. All the while, Scott insisted he could make the film’s December 22 release date. He’s still confident — even thrilled, it sounds from the EW interview — that he can put it all together in time.

A new trailer just came out today, featuring Plummer, briefly, as Getty:Compare that to the previous trailer, released in September, featuring a heavily made-up Spacey:Plummer’s Getty is also shown in a new character poster, via EW:

Plummer does seem to be a natural fit for this cold, rich patriarch role.

For the record, Scott said he and Spacey haven’t talked about all of this. He said if Spacey had called him, he still would’ve replaced him, but they would’ve had a conversation before moving on.

“All the Money in the World” comes out December 22 in theaters.

  • Christopher Plummer to Replace Kevin Spacey in Ridley Scott Movie Coming Out in 6 Weeks

13th Annual Monte Cristo Awards - InsideWow. Can they really pull this off?

Director Ridley Scott‘s movie “All the Money in the World” was already done. It’s still planning to keep its current release date of December 22. But it does not want to keep Kevin Spacey anymore, after the multiple sexual misconduct allegations against him. So they’re really going to do something wild — replace Spacey with Christopher Plummer in the role of J. Paul Getty, once the richest man in the world.

“All the Money in the World” — costarring Michelle Williams and Mark Wahlberg — is about the kidnapping of Getty’s grandson, with the billionaire reluctant to pay the ransom. (FYI, the 16-year-old grandson is played by Charlie Plummer, but there seems to be no relation to Christopher Plummer.)

Since they aged Spacey and really made him stretch for the role, it does seem like Christopher Plummer could probably step in, skip the hair and makeup transformation, and fill the role of the cold patriarch with ease. This is in his wheelhouse.

Ridley Scott’s movie was pulled from the upcoming AFI Fest thanks to the Spacey allegations, and they clearly don’t want to be attached to those headlines anymore. So they’re erasing him from the film in the eleventh hour.

After the replacement news came out, the Internet had a little bit too much fun with the idea:

According to Entertainment Weekly, “All the Money in the World” reshoots are expected to begin soon, and even though we’re only six weeks out, they still plan to release the movie starting Friday, Dec. 22.

  • Best of Late Night TV: Jimmy Fallon’s Mitt Romney Impression and James Franco’s Thoughts on ‘The Interview’ (VIDEO)

If you’re like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don’t worry; we’ve got you covered. Here’s the best of what happened last night on late night.

Mitt Romney kicked off the late night docket with an appearance on “The Tonight Show,” which was surprisingly hilarious thanks to a lil’ something called Mitt in the Mirror –– in which the governor talked to his reflection (aka Jimmy Fallon). Let’s just say Jimmy does Mitt even better than Mitt!

Time for another edition of Lie Witness News on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” This time, Jimmy’s crew took to the streets of Hollywood Boulevard to ask people who claimed to be March Madness fans about a bunch of random basket ball players that definitely don’t exist. Prepare for lots of second-hand embarrassment.

James Franco swung by “Late Show” and chatted about the controversy surrounding “The Interview.” It was definitely interesting to hear his response during this slightly tense conversation, so check it out below.

Christopher Plummer visited Conan and slayed everyone with his classiness and sense of humor. His story about working in a room full of nuns and Nazis during “The Sound of Music” was hilarious. Must-watch!

Finally, you might have heard the traumatizing news that One Direction’s Zayn Malik is leaving the band. But fear not, directioners –– Andy Richter is ready to take his place! No really, just look at him sing “What Makes You Beautiful” with the rest of the group. This guy’s made to be a boy-bander!
