‘The Bride!’ is a lot. Maggie Gyllenhaal’s second directorial effort (which she also scripted) is wildly ambitious and far bigger than her first film, ‘The Lost Daughter,’ combining the genres of horror, film noir, comedy, and romance into essentially a anarchic punk reinvention of ‘The Bride of Frankenstein.’ But the Bride here, embodied by a magnetic Jessie Buckley, is no mute walk-on at the end: death and reanimation (or “reinvigoration,” as it’s called in the movie) changes her into a force of primal female power that no one – certainly not her monstrous mate – can control.

Buckley’s own primal energy and that of her co-star Christian Bae go a long way in ‘The Bride!’ but the film is not without considerable flaws. It’s almost too much at points, and its disparate tones, themes, and narrative strands take a long time to gel together, and then only fitfully. The movie takes a big, big swing – but doesn’t always connect.

    Story and Direction

The film opens with a ghostly version of ‘Frankenstein’ author Mary Shelley (Buckley) telling us from beyond the grave there’s more to the story of the Bride than we know (Shelley herself never brought the creature’s mate to life, unlike James Whale’s classic 1935 film). Next we meet Ida (also Buckley), a young woman in 1930s Chicago who, possessed inexplicably by Shelley’s spirit, is murdered by the gangsters she’s fallen in with.

At the same time, Frank (Christian Bale), Victor Frankenstein’s creation who’s been alive for more than a century and taken the name of his ‘father,’ approaches the eccentric, radical scientist Dr. Euphronious (Annette Bening) about making him a mate. They dig up Ida’s body and as a result of her ‘reinvigoration,’ she becomes the Bride, a fierce, impulsive, wildly sensual, and unfettered being with no memory of her past.

Before they even fully understand what’s happening, Frank and the Bride go on a killing spree that begins with two men who grope the Bride at a club and continues bloodily from there, as they are pursued across the country by two detectives (Peter Sarsgaard and Penélope Cruz). But the Bride also becomes a cult figure to women everywhere, who adopt her look and her willingness to tell men ‘no’ – or in her words, ‘I would prefer not to.’ Frank, who adores her, is the only man she trusts, even though he hides some truths about their past as well.

‘The Bride!’ begins at 100mph and doesn’t let up from there, although there are points where it feels long and one’s interest begins to fade. Part of it is the overwhelming nature of the movie: ‘The Bride!’ is a full-on assault on the senses, from Ida’s murder to the creation scene to her first night out as the Bride in a club, each of these scenes nearly exploding with stroboscopic energy. The tone shifts wildly as well, from dark comedy to full-on horror to road movie, and those shifts can be so jarring and abrupt that the result for the viewer is numbness. Matching those are the narrative strands that come and go, from the undercooked gangster subplot to the fuzzily sketched detectives, who don’t really earn the arcs they get.

On a tactile level, production designer Karen Murphy and costume designer Sandy Powell create immersive, detailed sets and outfits for the film, while cinematographer Lawrence Sher comes up with a series of searing images. The film is also surprisingly gory, with heads smashed in, tongues ripped out, and bullets ripping through flesh. Frank, a movie fanatic obsessed with film star Ronnie Reed (Jake Gyllenhaal), has visions in which he and the Bride perform dance numbers out of Reed’s movies (there are lots of other movie homages as well, a nice touch on Maggie Gyllenhaal’s part). All this only adds to the jumbled, chaotic vibe of the movie – the viewer is never really sure whether to take all this seriously or not, which ultimately undermines the film despite its sheer originality.

    Cast and Performances

Following hot on the heels of her devastating work in ‘Hamnet,’ Jessie Buckley pivots here into an over-the-top performance that teeters on the edge of overbearing but keeps the viewer enthralled due to the actor’s sheer presence and power. She’s matched in that department by Christian Bale, whose heavy prosthetics recall the classic Boris Karloff look but who is just as raw as Buckley, creating a nuanced monster who’s as empathetic in his own way as Jacob Elordi’s take in 2025’s ‘Frankenstein.’ The two channel a ‘Bonnie and Clyde’ chemistry that often goes so far out there that they have a little trouble reeling it back in and making these characters seem real again.

Peter Sarsgaard (Maggie Gyllenhaal’s husband) and Penélope Cruz share a nice chemistry as well, and Cruz is especially vivacious. But one gets the feeling that they might be better off in their own movie where they have more space to explore their characters. The supporting MVP is Annette Bening, who brings compassion to an otherwise campier role and who, like the others, has her motivations scrambled by the sudden turns in tone and narrative.

    Final Thoughts

There’s no question that Maggie Gyllenhaal gets an ‘A’ for effort here. Rebooting the Bride of Frankenstein as a woman freed of her past, experiencing true liberation for the first time, and mowing down those who try to corral that is the most radical take we’ve seen on the Frankenstein mythos in a long time, and that theme, the setting, and the stream-of-consciousness structure of the whole thing make it one of the most original films you’re likely to see in 2026.

But as with a few other films we’ve already seen this year, ‘The Bride!’ often feels like Gyllenhaal and her cast and crew are throwing everything at the wall and holding nothing back, hoping that in the end it looks more like art and less like … a mess on the wall. Like its monstrous leads, ‘The Bride!’ is made up of many parts stitched together and sparked into life by pure electricity – yet it’s that uncontrolled energy that also makes ‘The Bride!’ an unwieldly, exhausting experience.

‘The Bride!’ receives a score of 65 out of 100.

What is the plot of ‘The Bride!’

The two revive a murdered young woman and The Bride (Jessie Buckley) is born. What ensues is beyond what either of them imagined: murder, possession, a radical cultural movement, and outlaw lovers in a wild and combustible romance.

    • Christian Bale may join ‘Heat 2.’
    • It would mark a re-team for the actor with director Michael Mann
    • Leonardo DiCaprio is making a deal to also star.

There is some extra forward movement for Michael Mann’s ambitious aim to bring his ‘Heat’ sequel novel to screens. Christian Bale, who starred for the director in 2009’s ‘Public Enemies’, is now, per Deadline, circling one of the main roles in ‘Heat 2.’

Assuming he does end up signing on –– and a reunion with Mann is certainly an intriguing concept –– Bale would likely end up co-starring with Leonardo DiCaprio, though no deals are complete yet.

Still, it certainly appears Mann is aiming to build a leading ensemble to match the star power and awards haul of the original, famously led by Al Pacino and Robert De Niro.

Mann’s original film follows Neil McCauley (De Niro), who leads a group of professional bank robbers, taking down major scores around Los Angeles. But after their latest heist goes terribly wrong and ends up in homicide, detective Vincent Hanna (Pacino) finds a clue and becomes obsessed with the case, determined to stop McCauley’s crew.

Hanna and McCauley are competing against each other in a deadly cat-and-mouse game. Although they are on different sides of the law, they still find huge respect, recognition in each other’s troubled personal lives and they understand their competing motivations –– yet they won’t hesitate to do whatever they can to win the battle.

How does ‘Heat 2’ tie in?

‘Heat 2’ (written by Mann alongside Meg Gardiner) in book form tells the story of everything that happens before and after to the principal characters. The book jumps between two time periods, the first following Chris Shiherlis (Val Kilmer in the original film) as he tries to evade the LAPD and Hanna following the bank robbery gone bad and moves forward into new territory in the tri-border zone and Southeast Asia.

The second storyline takes readers back to Chicago in 1988 when McCauley, Shiherlis and their crew are taking scores on the West Coast, the U.S.–Mexico border, and in Chicago. At the same time, Hanna is cutting his teeth as a rising star in the Chicago police department chasing an ultraviolent gang of home invaders.

The fallout from McCauley’s scores and Hanna’s pursuit cause unexpected repercussions in a parallel narrative.

DiCaprio is reportedly interested in the role of Shiherlis, and the likes of Austin Butler and Bradley Cooper have also had meetings about potential parts. Driver is still apparently part of the mix too –– essentially anyone with a profile is circling this one. We don’t yet know who Bale might play.

When will ‘Heat 2’ be on screens?

Amazon MGM has yet to confirm a release date for the movie, but Mann is aiming to have cameras rolling next year.

    • Kathryn Hahn, John Mulaney and Sienna Miller are the latest recruits for ‘Madden.’
    • David O. Russell wrote the script and will direct.
    • Nicolas Cage is playing the football icon.

We learned in August last year that Nicolas Cage would be making an unusual move for him, and stepping up to play NFL coaching (and TV/video game) legend John Madden for a new movie from ‘American Hustle’s David O. Russell.

And, as seems typical with Russell’s projects, he’s now gathered a starry ensemble to support Cage in the film.

Per Deadline, Kathryn Hahn, John Mulaney and Sienna Miller are the latest additions to the movie.

And the site’s story confirms word from reporter Jeff Sneider that Christian Bale, a perennial Russell performer, is also aboard the movie.

With a script by Russell (based on earlier work from Cambron Clark), the exact details of what ‘Madden’ will cover remain a little indistinct at the moment.

But there is certainly a lot to choose from. Madden was a star player in high school, and was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in 1958, only for injury to curtail his rookie season.

Instead, he went on to earn a degree in teaching and put his skills/experience to good use as a coach, going on to lead the Oakland Raiders to the Super Bowl and a win in 1977.

Madden became known as one of the best coaches in the sport’s history, but his all-consuming passion and commitment wore on him, and he retired for health reasons.

Still, a hugely successful second chapter dawned as courted by the fledgling gaming company Electronic Arts to be the front man for its Madden NFL multi-player video game. Madden had never played a video game, but it turned into an outlet where he could lend his knowledge and help the masses better understand the gridiron.

The game has long been a sensation –– even with its inspiration dying in 2021, it continues to this day as a favorite of players and fans.

And beyond even that, Madden also became famous as a beloved commentator on the game he loved so much, his enthusiasm pouring from the screen, and his habit of scribbling on the screen making him a firm favorite among viewers.

Who are the new recruits playing?

Bale is playing late Raiders owner Al Davis, while Mulaney has the role of Trip Hawkins, who founded EA Sports and was a driving force in behind the Madden NFL video games.

Hahn will be Madden’s wife, Virginia; and Miller is on board to be Davis’ wife, Carol.

With the casting process in full swing, Russell is preparing to start shooting next month in Atlanta.

Here’s what Russell said about the casting news in a statement:

“Nicolas Cage, one of our greatest and most original actors, will portray the best of the American spirit of originality, fun, and determination in which anything is possible as beloved national legend John Madden. Together with the ferocious style, focus, and inspired individualism of Al Davis, owner of the underdog Oakland Raiders, the feature will be about the joy, humanity and genius that was John Madden in a wildly inventive, cool world of the 1970s.”

Russell himself is something of a controversial figure, his successful directing career also marked by criticisms of his attitude to women and other groups. He’s also been known for his mercurial behavior on set, infamously clashing with George Clooney on ‘Three Kings’ and Lily Tomlin on ‘I Heart Huckabees‘.

    19072

Bale, of course, clearly has no such issues, since he has worked with the director several times before, on ‘Amsterdam,’ ‘American Hustle’ and ‘The Fighter,’ which won him his first Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.

Where else have we seen Kathryn Hahn, John Mulaney and Sienna Miller?

(L to R) Kathryn Hahn and Chase Sui Wonders in ‘The Studio,’ premiering March 26, 2025 on Apple TV+.

Hahn has been busy lately with Disney+ and Marvel series ‘Agatha All Along,’ which has played well since it premiered in the fall. She can also be seen in the Apple TV+ series ‘The Studio,’ which has been a success for that streaming service.

On the movie front, she lent her voice to animated canine comedy ‘Fixed,’ directed by Genndy Tartakovsky, which has been in limbo until it was picked up by Netflix for release in August.

Mulaney, meanwhile, has been spending his time on Netflix talk show ‘Everyone’s Live with John Mulaney,’ and he’ll be back as Spider-Ham for ‘Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse,’ though that won’t be on screens until 2027.

He’s also a voice (and a producer) on animated coming-of-age comedy series ‘Big Mouth‘, which launches its final season on Netflix on May 23rd. ‘Madden’ marks one of his rare forays into bigger movie roles.

As for Miller, she was most recently seen in Kevin Costner’s Western ‘Horizon: An American Saga’ and assuming the second part moseys its way to theaters after the box office stumble of the first, she’ll be back in her role as Frances Kittredge.

Coming up, she’s back as Cathy Ryan for the ‘Jack Ryan’ movie, based on the John Krasinski-starring series that has been shooting and will likely be in theaters next year.

When will the new David O. Russell/Nicolas Cage movie ‘Madden’ be in theaters?

Amazon/MGM Studios is backing the drama, but it has yet to schedule a release date.

While he has brought us several outstanding original movies (most recently the successful ‘Challengers,’) Italian director Luca Guadagnino has also tried his hand at adapting novels or remaking classic films with a new spin.

And while the newly-announced plan to tackle a fresh take on Bret Easton Ellis’ novel ‘American Psycho’ could fall into both categories, it sounds, according to Deadline as though Guadagnino is aiming to take a new crack at the book rather than going the remake route.

Ellis’ novel, which was published back in 1991, ‘American Psycho’ is set during the Wall Street boom of the late 1980s.

It follows wealthy young investment banker Patrick Bateman. In his mid-20s when the story begins, Bateman narrates his everyday activities, from his grooming routine, his recreational life among the Wall Street elite of New York… and his forays into murder by night.

Because, as the title suggests, Bateman is a serial killer, one who has been offing rivals, colleagues and women, his murder spree becoming increasingly brutal and sadistic.

The book was a sensation in its day but fueled huge debate over its grisly violence and misogynistic attitudes –– even with a satirical bent.

Co-writer/director Mary Harron adapted the book in 2000 with Christian Bale as Bateman, which became something of a divisive cult hit itself. A sequel, ‘American Psycho II: All American Girl’ was quickly pumped out featuring none of the same creative team but couldn’t match the impact.

With Lionsgate long wanting to take a new stab at adapting the novel, it also has Sam Pressman, the son of Edward R. Pressman, producer of the original film, aboard.

Scott Z. Burns, who wrote the likes of ‘Contagion,’ ‘Side Effects,’ and ‘The Bourne Ultimatum’ (and most recently created Apple TV+ series ‘Extrapolations,’) is writing the script.

But the ever-active mind of the filmmaker behind films such as ‘Inception,’ ‘Tenet’ and the successful Batman trilogy, has not been sleeping long, and he’s now starting to put the pieces together for his next movie.

With Damon locking down a deal, expect the director to attract another sampling of big-name actors to take part.

Damon, of course, would now be a three-time Nolan performer (following ‘Interstellar’ and ‘Oppenheimer,’) joining the likes of Christian Bale and Cillian Murphy (with the latter scoring an Academy Award for ‘Oppenheimer’) in that club.

We wouldn’t be surprised if Murphy in particular comes back in some capacity; and given how many people cut their salaries and found time in busy schedules for roles in his last film, we doubt Nolan will have an issue filling the ensemble out.

Which studio will distribute Nolan’s next film?

While the filmmaker had been based for years at Warner Bros.’, the company’s decision to put much of its 2020 slate on streaming saw him take his business elsewhere.

The rights to ‘Oppenheimer’ were put up for auction, a bidding battle that Universal ultimately won and reaped the rewards when the movie became a huge sensation.

Nolan was clearly happy without things worked out in collaboration with the studio, as he’s gone right back to it for this new project, which will shoot in the IMAX format next year. He hasn’t ruled out a return to Warners in future, but it appears for now he’s happy where he is.

When will Chris Nolan’s next movie be in theaters?

Universal and IMAX have planted a flag in a July 17th, 2026 release slot for the new movie.

    • The new take on ‘Frankenstein’ is now in production.

Much like fellow literary horror icon Dracula, Mary Shelley’s Dr. Frankenstein and the not-so-ethical doctor’s ill-fated creation are seemingly always the subject of adaptations for screens big and small.

The latest to try their hand at some fresh re-telling is Maggie Gyllenhaal, who proved she had great directorial chops to go along with her acting career when she made intense drama ‘The Lost Daughter’ in 2021 and it went on to score three Oscar nominations.

But ‘The Bride!’ (for that is the title her latest, exclamation point and all) should certainly prove to be something quite different from Gyllenhaal, and she’s now taken to Instagram to offer up first looks at stars Christian Bale and Jessie Buckley via the movie’s camera tests.

What’s the Story of ‘The Bride!’?

    'The Bride!'

Here is the logline for the movie: A lonely Frankenstein (Bale) travels to 1930s Chicago to seek the aid of Dr. Euphronius in creating a companion for himself. The two reinvigorate a murdered young woman and the Bride (Buckley) is born. She is beyond what either of them intended, igniting a combustible romance, the attention of the police, and a wild and radical social movement.

Gyllenhaal’s cast also includes Peter Sarsgaard, Annette Bening, Julianne Hough and Penélope Cruz.

From the looks of this, Bale is going the typically committed route (we’re sure that’s prosthetics, though he’d probably agree to die and get stitched back together in the service of his art given half the chance) and Buckley’s look is also striking.

It’s a seemingly refreshing version of the ‘Bride of Frankenstein’ story, written by the director and picked up for distribution by Warner Bros. And that title –– whether or not it keeps the exclamation point –– indicates a solid role for Buckley, who did such great work in ‘The Lost Daughter’.

  • An ‘American Psycho’ Remake is in Development

    • Lionsgate is looking to make a new adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’ American Psycho’.
    • The movie is at a very embryonic stage.
    • A remake of ‘The Dead Zone’ is also under discussion.

In 2000, Christian Bale hacked his way into cinematic history as the psychopathic Wall St. type Patrick Bateman, who shoved the “anti” well and truly into antihero for the adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’ scathing satire of 1980s masculinity and consumer culture, ‘American Psycho’.

The movie, directed by Mary Harron based on a script she wrote with Guinevere Turner, has become a cult favorite, even as it faced criticism at the time for its seeming sexist attitude (an attitude it was entirely satirizing).

And it was followed by a hasty, wedged-together sequel, ‘American Psycho II: All American Girl’, which had pretty much zero to do with the original, Lionsgate essentially repurposing an unconnected script in an attempt to cash in on the success of Harron’s movie.

Now, though, the studio is aiming to take another crack at Ellis’ story.

‘American Psycho’ follows Bateman, a wealthy New York City investment banking executive, who hides his alternate psychopathic ego from his co-workers and friends as he delves deeper into his violent, hedonistic fantasies.

The movie also starred Justin Theroux, Josh Lucas, Jared Leto, Chloë Sevigny and Reese Witherspoon.

According to Jeff Sneider’s The InSneider newsletter, Lionsgate is going the remake route, meeting writers to hear ideas for a new movie adaptation –– one that is crucially set in the present day.

While there’s a chance that losing the ‘80s consumerism critique might be an issue, there is plenty to be said about today’s politically-divided, corporate cronyism and social media-obsessed world. It’ll just need a smart writer to draw it out.

Who would star in the new movie?

Though it is certainly far from the casting stage, that hasn’t stopped the ‘net from fan-casting the Bateman role, including gender-flipped versions starring Allison Williams or Jodie Comer, and the more predictable likes of Jacob Elordi and Glenn Howerton.

What else is under discussion for a remake?

In addition to ‘American Psycho’, Lionsgate is also considering a new adaptation of Stephen King’s ‘The Dead Zone’.

The story focuses on high school teacher Johnny Smith, who wakes from a coma after a car accident to discover he has lost five years of his life and psychic powers. Foreseeing the future appears to be a gift at first but ends up causing problems.

David Cronenberg directed the 1983 big screen take on the story (with Christopher Walken as Johnny Smith), while a TV adaptation ran between 2002 and 2007, starring Anthony Michael Hall.

Much like the ‘Psycho’ plan, the ‘Dead Zone’ remake is still at a very early stage, with the studio looking for a writer.

    • Christian Bale and Bradley Cooper are attached to a new spy film.
    • They could end up starring in the based-on-real-life tale.
    • A bidding war is already under way for the book adaptation.

Having shared the screen in ‘American Hustle’, it appears that Bradley Cooper and Christian Bale are ready to reunite for a new story set in the 1970s: ‘Best of Enemies’.

And according to reporter Jeff Schneider, who broke the news, it’s one that is causing plenty of excitement among studios and streamers, who are understandably happy to have new potential projects starring big name actors floating around after months of delays because of this summer’s strikes.

What’s the story of ‘Best of Enemies’?

Bradley Cooper at the 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3' World Premiere.
Bradley Cooper at the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ World Premiere.

Adapted from Gus Russo and Eric Dezenhall’s book ‘Best of Enemies: The Last Great Spy Story of the Cold War’ by ‘American Hustle’s Eric Warren Singer, the story follows two Cold War spies — CIA case officer Jack Platt and KGB agent Gennady Vasilenko — who became improbable friends at a time when they should’ve been anything but.

They were both new arrivals in Washington D.C. in 1978 when their respective agencies assigned each man to seduce the other into betraying his country during the final days of the Cold War. Many years later, they helped discover the Soviet mole Robert Hanssen together and solved several other high-profile espionage mysteries. Cooper would reportedly play Platt, while Bale would play Vasilenko.

As of right now, there is no director attached, but given his previous success directing and starring in ‘A Star is Born’ and (see below) ‘Maestro’, there’s speculation that he might end up stepping behind the camera for this one also.

Several companies are hoping to snag this one, with Apple and Netflix considered the front-runners.

There’s another ‘American Hustle’ connection beyond the actors and writer, as another star of the David O. Russell movie, Robert De Niro, openly condemned Gennady’s incarceration in real life after he was caught and helped a lot with his case:

The ‘Raging Bull’ star sent a Christmas card to Gennady in prison which contained a photo.

The pic was enough to impress both the prison guards and the other inmates as DeNiro was just as famous in Russia as he was in the United States. Gennady’s treatment in prison immediately improved and he even came under the protection of Russian crime boss named Slava.

Cooper, of course, is in the awards race again with Leonard Bernstein film ‘Maestro’, in which he plays the conducting/composing legend. It has been on limited theatrical release and will hit Netflix on December 20th.

Bale voices on the main characters in the English-language version of Studio Ghibli’s ‘The Boy and the Heron’, which was just released in theaters to impressive numbers. It earned $12.8 million in its opening weekend, becoming the first original anime production to top the domestic box office.

When you see the names Studio Ghibli and especially company boss/master filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki attached to a film, it tends to be a stamp of quality that you can trust. Together they’ve put out some much-loved animated movies including ‘Spirited Away’, ‘Howl’s Moving Castle’ and ‘My Neighbor Totoro’.

But while not every title is a winner –– even Miyazaki’s most recent film, one he made after announcing his retirement (‘The Wind Rises’) wasn’t seen as in the top tier of the company’s productions.

Still, it’s good to be able to report that ‘The Boy and the Heron’ is one of the most entertaining (and moving) films that Miyazaki has made in years.

Is ‘The Boy and the Heron’ worth flying to see?

    'The Boy and the Heron.'
‘The Boy and the Heron.’ Copyright: © 2023 Studio Ghibli.

‘The Boy and the Heron’ is Miyazaki back at the height of his powers for sure, hitting themes and concepts that have weaved through his and other Ghibli Studios movies. We’re introduced to our young protagonist at a particularly traumatic time of his life –– his mother has died when the hospital where she works was bombed in the Pacific War –– and he’s moving with his father so his dad can take up a new job (oh and marry his dead wife’s younger sister which would be a lot for any child to deal with!)

As he explores his new home, he discovers family secrets and, somewhat naturally, a mysterious fantasy world full of strange creatures. But it’s all brought so beautifully to life that you won’t ever mind some familiar ingredients –– Miyazaki and his team have weaved another beguiling tale here that has lots of charm and a real emotional punch.

And, of course, the primarily hand-drawn animation (with a little dusting of digital magic here and there) is stunning to look at.

‘The Boy and the Heron’: Script and Direction

Miyazaki has described this as semi-autobiographical and while he puts the same level of care and attention into everything he makes, you can sense the extra levels of motivation here and the fact that he’s drawing from life again.

There is a lightness of touch to Miyazaki’s writing that even survives the translation process (for the record, we have seen the movie twice –– once in the original Japanese and in the dubbed version with the likes of Christian Bale and Willem Dafoe lending their voices). Opening in dramatic fashion, the film captures the horror of war but then gives way to more of a mystery story, our young protagonist slowly figuring out what is going on with the strange house he’s now living and the portal he discovers.

And while there are heavy themes of dealing with grief, loss and a seismic shifts in life, there is also room for humor, with the Heron in particular a fun character who causes no end of trouble for our hero when his otherworld form is revealed.

On the visual front, it’s naturally lush and lavish, creating some truly original shots. If there is any real criticism to be made, it’s that certain sequences are drawn out perhaps longer than they can, including a sequence of bubble-like spirits hoping to be born in our world (any similarities to Pixar’s ‘Soul’ on this front are entirely coincidental, and even here the Ghibli team makes it distinct).

‘The Boy and the Heron’: Performances

    'The Boy and the Heron.'
‘The Boy and the Heron.’ Copyright: © 2023 Studio Ghibli.

A lot of the heavy lifting here is carried by main character Mahito (Soma Santoki in the Japanese version; Luca Padovan in the English-language translation), who goes on his fantastical journey and learns plenty of lessons about his own history and dealing with the world.

In Miyazaki’s careful hands, he’s never a bratty character even given his situation, and shows real growth as he makes his way through the alternate world and discovers his true potential destiny there.

Around Mahito, there is a big group of oddball characters, be they chatty, militaristic parakeets or the troublemaking Heron. In both the Japanese and English-language versions, the voice roles are wrangled well. Though animation, particularly anime, has the tendency to push the heightened voice performances to a distracting degree, in ‘The Boy and the Heron’, they really complement the visuals well and bring the characters to life with either stately grace or comic energy.

‘The Boy and the Heron’: Final Thoughts

    'The Boy and the Heron.'
‘The Boy and the Heron.’ Copyright: © 2023 Studio Ghibli.

At a time when the likes of the ‘Spider-Verse’ movies and ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem’ are pushing the boundaries in the CG world, it’s reassuring to know that Studio Ghibli can still make masterpieces in the hand-drawn, 2D arena.

This is a beautiful, haunting and visually dynamic movie that is perfect for family viewing.

Mostly, ‘The Boy and the Heron’ just makes us glad that Miyazaki didn’t completely retire from the world of filmmaking. And if this is to be his swansong, it’s a wonderful movie to go out on.

‘The Boy and the Heron’ receives 8 out of 10 stars.

    TGuUm8SIPWHL2g95O5fCn6

What’s the story of ‘The Boy and the Heron’?

The plot of the film follows a young boy named Mahito longing for his mother ventures into a world shared by the living and the dead.

There, death comes to an end, and life finds a new beginning.

The movie is described as “a semi-autobiographical fantasy about life, death and creation, in tribute to friendship, from the mind of Hayao Miyazaki.”

Who else lends their voice to ‘The Boy and the Heron’?

‘The Boy and the Heron’s English-language cast includes Christian Bale, Dave Bautista, Gemma Chan, Willem Dafoe, Karen Fukuhara, Mark Hamill, Robert Pattinson, Florence Pugh, Luca Padovan, Mamoudou Athie, Tony Revolori and Dan Stevens.

Yet even given that talent, purists will be happy to know they can also seek the movie out in the original Japanese with subtitles.

  • Maggie Gyllenhaal Directing ‘Bride of Frankenstein’ Update

Universal, ever since it ditched the idea of a shared universe of updated monster movies following the box office flop of ‘The Mummy’ in 2017, has been finding success letting distinct filmmakers put their stamp on classic creature titles.

We’ve had the likes of Leigh Whannel’s take on gaslighting with ‘The Invisible Man’, and to a lesser degree of cash return, this year’s ‘Renfield’, which was a fun spin on toxic relationships with Dracula as the bad boss. The company will also touch on the vampire’s story with the long-gestating ‘The Last Voyage of the Demeter’, due in theaters next week.

Then there are those still bubbling away in the lab, including a ‘Wolfman’ movie to star Ryan Gosling and to be directed by Derek Cianfrance, James Wan handling ‘Frankenstein’, ‘Eternals’ director Chloe Zhao’s ‘Dracula’ and more.

Yet while there had been talk of a ‘Bride of Frankenstein’ redo from ‘Jurassic Park’ writer David Koepp at Universal, other studios are also taking a crack at the idea, which is in the public domain. A24, for example, has a version in development starring Scarlett Johansson.

Netflix, however, is entrusting that story to Maggie Gyllenhaal.

In James Whale’s 1935 movie, Dr. Frankenstein (Colin Clive), recovering from injuries sustained in the mob attack upon himself and his creation, falls under the control of his former mentor, Dr. Pretorius (Ernest Thesiger), who insists the now-chastened doctor resume his experiments in creating new life. Meanwhile, the Monster (Boris Karloff) remains on the run from those who wish to destroy him without understanding that his intentions are generally good despite his lack of socialization and self-control.

It also features Elsa Lanchester in the dual role of Mary Shelley (who starts the film telling the next iteration of her classic horror story) and the titular character, built by Frankenstein and appearing towards the end.

The sequel to 1931’s ‘Frankenstein’ was a hit at the box office, earning approximately $2 million, and drawing positive reviews.

Gyllenhaal, who more than proved her directorial skills with 2021’s Oscar-nominated ‘The Lost Daughter’, is looking to put her own stamp on the tale.

How it’ll be updated (or indeed, who wrote the script if Gyllenhaal herself isn’t pulling double duty) are unknown for now, but World of Reel learned via Production Weekly that she has Christian Bale, Penelope Cruz and Peter Sarsgaard in line to play Dr. Frankenstein, the Bride and an unknown role (possibly the creature?) respectively.

The notion of Gyllenhaal bringing her point of view to the story is certainly a compelling one, and after the success of ‘The Lost Daughter’, we’re certain Netflix will give her the budget and scope to make something fantastic.

Production Weekly mentions a planned early 2024 shoot for the movie, though that will obviously depend on how and when the strikes work out.
