  • Chris Pine Tries to Save a Sinking Ship in ‘The Finest Hours’

Stop us if you’ve heard this one before: Chris Pine plays the captain of a ship who navigates an unforgiving and grim expanse as he embarks on a bleak, life-saving mission.

Instead of helming a space ship as James T. Kirk in his “Star Trek” franchise, Pine takes on the role of a Coast Guard captain determined to rescue crew members on a sinking ship off the coast of Massachusetts that was ripped apart by a menacing storm in “The Finest Hours.”

As Coast Guard Capt. Bernie Webber, along with three other men, Pine sets out on a wooden lifeboat as he maintains a Boston accent thicker than the glue used to keep his wet hair strands perfectly in place through 60-foot high waves, snow and hurricane-force winds.

The disaster drama is based on real events that happened in 1952 and co-stars Casey Affleck, Eric Bana, Ben Foster, Holliday Grainger and John Ortiz, in theaters on Jan. 29, 2016.

  • ‘The Finest Hours’ Trailer: Chris Pine Is a Hero Facing Perfect Storm

“The Finest Hours” covers the true story of what’s being called “the greatest small boat rescue in Coast Guard history.” Chris Pine, Casey Affleck, and Eric Bana star in the action thriller, and Disney just released the first trailer.

    Check it out:

It’s hard not to make some comparisons to “A Perfect Storm,” even if this is set in the 1950s and the plot is quite different. “The Finest Hours” follows a massive nor’easter that struck New England on February 18, 1952. The storm wreaked havoc on the ships caught in its path, including the SS Pendleton. Affleck plays the senior officer on board, who realizes it’s up to him to take charge. Meanwhile, as word reaches the U.S. Coast Guard station in Chatham, Massachusetts, Bana’s warrant officer orders a daring operation to rescue the stranded men. Four men, led by Pine’s Coast Guard captain, set out in a wooden lifeboat with an ill-equipped engine and little means of navigation to face freezing temperatures, 60-foot high waves, and hurricane-force winds. Talk about heroes!

Disney plans to release “The Finest Hours” on January 29, 2016. What do you think, so far?

  • Chris Pine in Talks to Romance ‘Wonder Woman’

US-ENTERTAINMENT-FILM-OSCARSBeam Chris Pine up … to “Wonder Woman.”

Variety reports that the actor is close to making a deal to join the cast of the upcoming DC Comics movie as Steve Trevor, the love interest of Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman.

In the comic books, Steve Trevor is a military intelligence officer who crashes on Paradise Island, where Diana and her fellow Amazonians live. Diana falls for Steve and follows him back to the real world, where she becomes Wonder Woman.

Variety notes that Scott Eastwood was considered for the role, but he opted to take a smaller supporting role in “Suicide Squad” instead.

Pine is already part of one successful franchise in the “Star Trek” films, but this is the first time he’s been in a superhero movie. He’s set to star in “Star Trek 3,” as well, and he’ll have to juggle filming that with “Wonder Woman,” which is due out in theaters in 2017.

  • Idris Elba in Talks to Be the ‘Star Trek 3’ Villain

BRITAIN-ENTERTAINMENT-CINEMA-THE GUNMANThe buzz around Hollywood is that Idris Elba is in the running to be the main villain in “Star Trek 3.” Variety reports that the “Luther” star is in “early talks” for the role, although there’s no more info on what the role will be or who exactly the Big Bad of “Star Trek 3” will be.

In February, a rumor surfaced that Bryan Cranston was being eyed for the role of the villain, but maybe there’s more than one villain? The more, the merrier! There are a ton of possible villains for “Star Trek 3,” from Klingons to the Borg, so writers Simon Pegg (yes, that Simon Pegg) and Doug Jung have plenty to choose from.

“Star Trek 3” will star Pegg, Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, and Anton Yelchin. There have been some interesting behind-the-scenes changes since the film was first announced a few years ago, such as Justin Lin replacing Roberto Orci in the director’s seat. Orci was also attached to co-write the script with his former creative partner Alex Kurtzman. In any case, “Star Trek 3” is reportedly still on track to begin filming in June.
