    Preview:

    • Marvel has revealed the main cast for ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’
    • It’s a mix of returning names and (relatively) new recruits.
    • ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ are scheduled for release in 2026 and 2027.

While Marvel usually prefers to keep its secrets close (at least, closer than the current government seems to manage), there is also the conflicting compulsion to promote the next movie in its sprawling cinematic universe, ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘.

We’ve known for a while that the Avengers will be back to face the threat of Victor Von Doom (Robert Downey Jr.), but the rest of the cast was largely in the realm of speculation, even for those who have been part of the MCU family for years.

The company used a livestream to confirm who will show up in the new movie, consisting of footage of the backs of director’s chairs featuring the cast names.

Who is in the cast of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’?

And those names? A mixture of established actors and some of the more recent recruits.

On the longstanding front, we have Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/Captain America, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, Paul Rudd as Scott Lang/Ant-Man (whose chair is amusingly smaller than the others), Letitia Wright as Shuri, Wyatt Russell as John Walker/US Agent (from ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,’ who is back on our screens this year in May 2nd’s ‘Thunderbolts*’), Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova (likewise part of ‘Thunderbolts*’), David Harbour (introduced as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian in ‘Black Widow’ and who will also recur in ‘Thunderbolts*’). Also from both ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’ and ‘Thunderbolts*’, Hannah John Kamen as Ava Starr/Ghost.

Alongside Wright, ‘Black Panther’s Winston Duke will be back as M’Baku, and Tom Hiddleston will also return as Loki.

We’re happy to see Simu Liu will return as Shang-Chi, a character who really has deserved a sequel before now. And Danny Ramirez, who was introduced as Joaquim Torres in ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ and reprised the role in February’s ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ will show up as the new Falcon.

On the recent addition front, there’s Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Joseph Quinn and Pedro Pascal from ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps,’ which will introduce the iconic team to the MCU on July 25th.

Any surprises? We’re not sure we predicted Tenoch Huerta Mejia –– who played Namor in ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ coming back, but his chair is among the others (not dripping with water –– missed joke opportunity there!).

Lashana Lynch and Kelsey Grammer in 'The Marvels'.

And Kelsey Grammer, who played Dr. Henry ‘Hank’ McCoy/Beast in Fox Marvel movies ‘X-Men: The Last Stand’ and ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past,’ and cropped up in a cameo as the character in ‘The Marvels,’ is also on the list.

There’s no word yet on whether this means his version of Beast will be the final MCU variant, but with Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn and James Marsden also announced, the X-Men clearly have a presence. Likewise, Channing Tatum, who made such an impact in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ will be back as Gambit. No sign of Ryan Reynolds or Hugh Jackman, though.

Lewis Pullman, who is introduced as a character called “Bob” (but who has since been revealed to be powerful character Sentry) in ‘Thunderbolts*’ is also listed. So we’re guessing his character –– who also appears to be an antagonist in the movie given the new trailer –– factors in somehow.

Last, but by no means least, the doors to the cavernous soundstage holding all the chairs opens up, and in strides Downey Jr., who sits in his own named chair and puts his finger to his lips. It’s over!

We’re sure there will be other announcements to come –– the company loves to hold back cameos and other roles, so we’ll have to wait and see if Tom Holland or Mark Ruffalo spoil the appearances or if an official press release arrives in due time.

If you’re desperate to see the Livestream, please click on the video player at the top of the page.

The new movie is now kicking off shooting in London, with Marvel veteran directors Joe and Anthony Russo –– who count the giant two previous Avengers outings ‘Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame’ on their shared resume –– back marshalling the chaos that is a team-up movie on this scale.

Joe and Anthony Russo on their return

Speaking to Empire magazine, Anthony revealed that what lured them to return:

“We’re very close with Kevin [Feige] and Lou [D’Esposito, Marvel Studios’ Co-President] and the entire Marvel team and we’ve had conversations through the years. We’ve talked about a lot of ideas. Really what happened was, we ended up stumbling upon a [‘Secret Wars’] idea that activated all of us, you couldn’t see it coming until it came, and once it came it was like, ‘Well, that’s a story we need to tell.’”

And that creative spark extended to regular collaborator Stephen McFeely, who is also back writing the new movies.

While other co-writer Christopher Markus is so far sticking with the Russos’ AGBO company to keep it running, McFeely was tempted back into the MCU machine.

    Here’s what Joe told Empire:

“There were ideas that we were trying to wrap our heads around that preceded this one, and we just never found the story. I remember calling Steve and said, ‘Hey, crazy idea. What do you think if we all go back and do Secret Wars?’ He was like, ‘F*** no. Absolutely not.’ And then he hung up. And the next morning at 7.30 he called and were like, ‘Alright, I have an idea…’ ”

Of course, one of the biggest plot elements for the new movies has already been revealed on Marvel’s terms, with Robert Downey Jr. taking the stage at last year’s San Diego Comic-Con to confirm he’s playing Victor Von Doom.

And according to the directors he’s very involved in helping to shape the character.

This is what they told Entertainment Tonight:

“It’s a very intense process developing the character. He’s so immersed in it. He is so dialed in. That’s the kind of artist he is. That’s the kind of actor he is. He just loves really rich three-dimensional characters and I think he sees a real opportunity here with that character.”

And following ‘Doomsday,’ we’ll see ‘Secret Wars’…

    What is Marvel’s ‘Secret Wars’?

(L to R) Joe Russo, Anthony Russo and Kevin Feige present 'Avengers: Secret Wars' at San Diego Comic-Con 2024. © 2024 20th Century Studios / © and ™ 2024 MARVEL.

Secret Wars’ would draw from (through the usual Marvel movie filter where changes will be made) a pair of 1980s comic book series focused on an all-powerful antagonist known as the Beyonder, who in the first installment pitted Marvel’s heroes and villains against each other on a planet known as Battleworld.

In a 2015 revival by Jonathan Hickman, the resulting conflict left the multiverse collapsed, the survivors living on a single planet ruled by classic villain Doctor Doom.

The Russos have previously talked about their enthusiasm for ‘Secret Wars,’ so this one made sense.

When will the next two ‘Avengers’ movies head to screens?

Marvel is planning to have ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ on screens on May 1st, 2026, followed by ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ on May 7th, 2027.

Landing on Disney+ daily across eight days from December 22nd, the second season of Marvel’s Disney+ animated series ‘What If…?’ wraps up the show’s run –– at least for now –– with another set of episodes where several build to a grand, multiverse-hopping finale.

Disney’s Marvel arm has seen something of a renewal this year, between the success of ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ (even if that film poked plenty of fun at how tired the idea of the multiverse seems these days) and ‘Agatha All Along.’ And now here comes the welcome return of ‘What If…?’ which again blends more stand-alone stories with some clever easter eggs (and in one case, an actual egg) that knit together to spin a bigger tale around Jeffrey Wright’s powerful The Watcher. Who, it turns out, will have to answer for meddling in the affairs of different universes.

Does ‘What If…?’ Season 3 still provide multiversal fun?

In keeping with the previous two seasons, the new run of ‘What If…?’ offers a blend of intriguing possibilities and an overarching spine that only starts to reveal itself towards the end of this final eight episodes. Those who have seen the previous seasons won’t be surprised at what it is building to, though it’s mostly satisfying.

But the pleasure in this show is usually more in the individual episodes, which here run the gamut between the hilarious (one focused on Howard the Duck and his unlikely, but somehow perfect relationship) and the heartbreaking (an epic, dystopian story of what happens with a ‘Black Panther’-associated character following the near destruction of Earth by Tiamut the celestial). Indeed, there is better use of several elements of the ‘Eternals’ than in the movie itself.

Another welcome element, near prescient, given the runaway success of her solo show, is the presence of Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha Harkness.

And that’s probably about all we can say on that front, given the extensive embargoes in place on this!

    Script and Direction

The regular writing team of Matthew Chauncey, Ryan Little and A.C. Bradley are back for the season, and the scripts run the usual gamut of superb to solid. While there isn’t perhaps the knockout winner of, say, last year’s festive episode, there remains a good balance of character interaction and fascinating peeks into unusual corners of the MCU while also blending in some more comics-faithful moments for fans of the printed pages.

Bryan Andrews and Stephan Franck return to direct the episodes and the look of the show continues to evolve in subtle ways. Most of the characters will be instantly recognizable, while others, such as Obadiah Stane (voiced here by Kiff VandenHeuvel rather than Jeff Bridges) might take a moment.

    Performances

As with the past seasons, the new batch of episodes has a blend of original MCU performers (the likes of Mark Ruffalo, Anthony Mackie, Laurence Fishburne, Samuel L. Jackson, Kat Dennings, David Harbour and Hayley Atwell) rubbing shoulders –– or perhaps that should be vocal chords –– with replacements (multi-voice talent Ross Marquand the MVP here).

There are the occasionally jarring replacements, but on the whole, it’s a satisfying set of voices. Seth Green is great as usual as Howard the Duck, playing perfectly off the energy of Kat Dennings as Darcy. And kudos to Wright who, when given more to do as the Watcher than simply observe and narrate.

Oh, and you won’t tire of hearing Jackson emote the phrase “Mr. and Mrs.… The Duck.”

It’s also fun to hear the likes of Jason Isaacs –– something of a genre titan thanks to ‘Harry Potter,’ ‘Star Trek,’ ‘Star Wars’ and the DC animated appearances he’s put in –– as a powerful cosmic entity whose voice fairly drips with withering sarcasm.

    Final Thoughts

Though it may not quite hit the highs of last year’s festive season run, Season 3 of ‘What If…?’ certainly has enough pleasures to keep fans happy. And though the big finale feels a little predictable at times, it is definitely enough to leave you wishing the company would commission future seasons, especially given how effective the creative team has been in making compelling narratives fit in sub-30-minute episodes.

‘What If…?’ Season 3 receives 8 out of 10 stars.

What’s the plot of ‘What If…?’ Season 3?

“What If…?” returns in Season 3 for its culminating adventure through the multiverse.

Watch as classic characters make unexpected choices that will mutate their worlds into spectacular alternate versions of the MCU. The Watcher (Jeffrey Wright) will guide viewers as the series traverses new genres, bigger spectacles, and incredible new characters.

    • Chris Hemsworth’s in talks for Disney’s ‘Prince Charming.’
    • ‘Paddington’s Paul King is on to direct the new movie about the character.
    • Simon Farnaby and Jon Croker are co-writing the script.

Recently, word arrived that ‘Paddington’ and ‘Wonka’ maestro Paul King had found his next big directing gig: handling the new take on Prince Charming for Disney.

There was no talk of potential casting in that original report, but The InSneider’s Jeff Sneider has heard that the movie is attracting attention from someone with experience in the fairy tale realm –– and no, we don’t mean Asgard.

Chris Hemsworth, whose rose to fame as Marvel’s Thor (and is still looking to make future movies in the MCU) is in talks to play the title role.

If he does lock in a deal, this would mark his latest appearance in a fantasy-fueled film, since he’s played The Huntsman in 2012’s ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’ (that one co-starring Kristen Stewart as Snow) and follow-up ‘The Huntsman: Winter’s War’ in 2016.

What’s the story of ‘Prince Charming’?

That’s the big question at this point –– Charming rarely has much of his own story, usually being found as the romantic interest for the likes of Snow White and Sleeping Beauty, though his real origin lies in ‘Cinderella.’

When King was originally reported as considering it for his next directing gig, it was made clear that this won’t necessarily tie into any of the fairy tales in which versions of the character have appeared, though we’d be surprised if there weren’t at least references to his cinematic/fictional history.

And there is also talk that this may end up going the animated route, though live-action would seem to make more sense given Disney’s drive to convert its entire cartoon back catalogue to live-action fantasy films.

Hemsworth was most recently seen –– okay, heard –– in another fresh take on a classic character, voicing Orion Pax (AKA Optimus Prime) in ‘Transformers One.’

He’s next set to star in Amazon MGM Studios’ thriller ‘Crime 101,’ which also features Halle Berry, Barry Keoghan and his ‘Avengers’ buddy Mark Ruffalo.

The film is based on a short story by Don Winslow, with ‘American Animals’ Bart Layton directing.

Further ahead, there are rumors he’ll be seen in the ‘Transformers’/‘G.I. Joe’ live-action/CG crossover film and is attached to play Hulk Hogan in a biopic of the wrestler.

When would the new ‘Prince Charming’ be in theaters?

Even with its history of cranking out these live-action movies, Disney has yet to announce a release date for –– or even confirm the new status of –– the Prince Charming movie.

We can’t imagine it would arrive before 2026.

Opening in theaters on September 20th, ‘Transformers One’ winds the clock further back than the usual ‘Transformers’ movies to focus on what happened before Optimus Prime and Megatron –– the respective leaders of the Autobot and Decepticon forces –– assumed those roles.

Plenty of ‘Transformers’ fans who were kids in the 1980s will have fond memories of ‘Transformers: The Movie’ And while the franchise has, in the years since Michael Bay launched the live-action/CG series of movies, varied greatly in quality, the key to success here appears is in returning the story to its animated roots.

Prequel stories are always an uphill struggle. You’re balancing audience expectation –– since we already know that at least one of the characters will survive to go on and have further adventures, so where’s the sense of jeopardy? –– and those who would complain that turning back the clock to the early days of established characters is a form of creative bankruptcy. After all, does anyone really need to know how Darth Vader ended up in that iconic suit, no matter the tease about his past offered in the original ‘Star Wars’? And you risk being accused of cheapening stories that people love.

Spare a thought, then for the team behind ‘Transformers One,’ who have found way to take very recognizable franchise archetypes and give them a welcome coming-of-age twist. Did you ever think that Optimus Prime and Megatron might have been buddies way back before they were enemies? No? Well, the new movie is here to show you why that works as a story.

    Script and Direction

(L to R) Brian Tyree Henry (D-16/Megatron), Scarlett Johansson (Elita-1), Chris Hemsworth (Orion Pax/Optimus Prime) and Keegan-Michael Key (B-127), star in Paramount Animation and Hasbro Present In Association with New Republic Pictures a di Bonaventua Pictures Production a Tom Desanto / Don Murphy Production a Bay Films Production 'Transformers One'.
(L to R) Brian Tyree Henry (D-16/Megatron), Scarlett Johansson (Elita-1), Chris Hemsworth (Orion Pax/Optimus Prime) and Keegan-Michael Key (B-127), star in Paramount Animation and Hasbro Present In Association with New Republic Pictures a di Bonaventua Pictures Production a Tom Desanto / Don Murphy Production a Bay Films Production ‘Transformers One’.

The script here originated –– at least, according to the credits –– with Andrew Barrer and Gabriel Ferrari (who have the likes of ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp,’ ‘Die in a Gunfight’ and ‘Haunt’ on their shared resumes) and was then worked on by Eric Pearson (who contributed to such movies as ‘Black Widow,’ ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ and ‘Godzilla vs. Kong‘). And since director Josh Cooley is a graduate of Pixar (he oversaw ‘Toy Story 4’) you’ve got to figure he had a hand in tuning the story too.

Together, the writers have put together something that is vital, entertaining and energetic (energon-etic, perhaps?) fusing the tropes of young men finding their way in the world with some of the unexplored lore of the planet Cybertron, home to the Transformers.

Perhaps more importantly, they’ve come up with credible explanations for why and how Optimus Prime and Megatron became the leaders that they did (for good and ill), and what sparked their ongoing conflict, one that spilled over to our planet.

The dialogue is witty and fun for kids, but also works for older fans who grew up with these characters. Yes, there will be those who question quite how human these robots feel, but the Transformers have always had relatable human characteristics.

Chris Hemsworth (Orion Pax/Optimus Prime) stars in Paramount Animation and Hasbro Present In Association with New Republic Pictures a di Bonaventua Pictures Production a Tom Desanto / Don Murphy Production a Bay Films Production 'Transformers One'.
Chris Hemsworth (Orion Pax/Optimus Prime) stars in Paramount Animation and Hasbro Present In Association with New Republic Pictures a di Bonaventua Pictures Production a Tom Desanto / Don Murphy Production a Bay Films Production ‘Transformers One’.

Perhaps the biggest issue –– and one the creative team is mostly able to overcome –– is that this new movie represents just the latest example of the hero’s journey/find the MacGuffin journey story to hit screens. That in itself has sunk many a film that doesn’t do anything fresh or new with those age-old concepts, but here Cooley and co. find a way to graft on entertaining layers while following familiar paths.

On the visual front, the movie (with animation chiefly crafted by Industrial Light and Magic) might not challenge the best of Pixar or DreamWorks for sheer quality, style and depth, but it’s impressive enough, particularly when it ventures onto the surface of Cybertron.

Plus, while some of the fight scenes verge into the over-frenetic, there’s enough logic behind them that you won’t end up rubbing your eyes at all the CG clashes on display.

    Performances

The vocal cast for the movie all does good work, with a few highlights:

    Chris Hemsworth as Orion Pax

The biggest issue legacy fans of the franchise may have is in the movie replacing Peter Cullen, long the voice of Optimus Prime on the big screen. But it helps to remember that this is Prime before he was Prime. Orion Pax is a garrulous ambitious, sometimes irresponsible type who has dreams of being more than the mining worker he’s seemingly destined to be. In Hemsworth’s hands –– well, vocal chords –– he’s an enthusiastic, likeable presence and you can see how he ends up as the character we know.

    Brian Tyree Henry as D-16

Brian Tyree Henry (D-16/Megatron) stars in Paramount Animation and Hasbro Present In Association with New Republic Pictures a di Bonaventua Pictures Production a Tom Desanto / Don Murphy Production a Bay Films Production ‘Transformers One’.

Likewise, Henry might not have quite the vocal power of Frank Welker (Megatron’s traditional performer), but D-16 never needed to start out as the scheming, power-hungry Decepticon of the cartoons and (some of) the live-action movies. Here, he’s more subdued and thoughtful, a good friend to Orion and willing to go along with his ideas at least until they reach a true dividing point.

    Keegan-Michael Key as B-127

Keegan-Michael Key (B-127) stars in Paramount Animation and Hasbro Present In Association with New Republic Pictures a di Bonaventua Pictures Production a Tom Desanto / Don Murphy Production a Bay Films Production 'Transformers One'.
Keegan-Michael Key (B-127) stars in Paramount Animation and Hasbro Present In Association with New Republic Pictures a di Bonaventua Pictures Production a Tom Desanto / Don Murphy Production a Bay Films Production ‘Transformers One’.

Key is a proven comic performer and playing the robot who will become Bumblebee feels like the perfect role for him in the movie. He’s a chatty sort, desperate for friends (so desperate that we meet the ones he has built at one funny moment paid off in a mid-credits sting) and eager to tag along with Orion and the rest. Cooley and co. find a way to utilize his comic relief without it becoming annoying.

    Scarlett Johansson as Elita -1

Scarlett Johansson (Elita-1) stars in Paramount Animation and Hasbro Present In Association with New Republic Pictures a di Bonaventua Pictures Production a Tom Desanto / Don Murphy Production a Bay Films Production ‘Transformers One’.

Johansson has perhaps less to do than the others, but she’s still fun, offering a no-nonsense foil to Orion in particular and giving the world’s least encouraging pep talk at one point.

The cast around the leads is peppered with strong performances –– Laurence Fishburne slips easily into Morpheus mode when dishing out gobs of exposition about the hidden history of Cybertron, and helping our heroes find their new path(s). Jon Hamm, meanwhile, is the feted Sentinel Prime, the powerful leader of Cybertron whose has the planet’s best interests at heart… or does he? Hamm’s not called upon to do much more than be heroic and then something less than that, but he does it well.

‘Transformers One’ should prove entertaining to those who grew up playing with the action figures or watching the cartoons and the generations that have embraced the Autobots and Decepticons since then. It’s not a perfect film, with a few gaps of logic and one or two cliches still lurking, but it’s easily one of the best movies to feature the characters, and never needs human interaction to keep it grounded.

The new ‘Transformers’ animated movie has the touch. It also has the power.

‘Transformers One’ receives 9 out of 10 stars.

    • The ‘Transformers One’ Panel at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con featured casting news about Laurence Fishburne and Steve Buscemi.
    • Chris Hemsworth and Tyree Henry are among the leads.
    • ‘Toy Story 4’ director Josh Cooley made the new movie.

While this year’s outing of the San Diego Comic-Con has so far proved to be a relatively quiet one (at least until the likes of Marvel show up to offer tantalizing news tidbits), there was some new information about an animated movie that is garnering some positive buzz off the back of early screenings: ‘Transformers One’.

The movie, which stars the voices of Chris Hemsworth, Brian Tyree Henry, Keegan-Michael Key and Scarlett Johansson features the much-loved robots in disguise… but at a time when they were able to transform at all.

It kicked off one of the early presentation panels, and the actors (minus Johansson, who was busy on the new ‘Jurassic World’ film) were on hand alongside director Josh Cooley (‘Toy Story 4’) and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura to debut some fresh footage and provide some new insight into the movie.

And the panel also offered up the latest trailer, which you can watch above.

The new movie is the untold origin story of Optimus Prime and Megatron, better known as sworn enemies, but once were friends bonded like brothers who changed the fate of Cybertron forever.

Hemsworth voices Orion Pax, who will become Autobot leader Optimus Prime, while Henry is D-16, the future Megatron. Key plays B-127, a chatty ‘bot who’ll later be known as Bumblebee, and Johansson is Elita-1.

What did we learn about the ‘Transformers One’ cast?

The panel included word (or rather, confirmation) that Jon Hamm is playing Cybertron leader Sentinel Prime, with Laurence Fishburne taking the Morpheus-alike role of Alpha Prion.

Perhaps the biggest revelation was word that Steve Buscemi voices Starscream, who we know will become one of Megatron’s (usually) loyal lieutenants. In ‘Transformers One’, they’re in opposition, with Starscream proclaiming that “the idea of a unified Cybertron is a myth” –– though it’s clear D-16 is starting to have doubts about his alliances.

Among the panel highlights were funny moments, including Hemsworth remarking that he and Henry –– who never shared a recording booth –– prepped to play best friends by sleeping in bunk beds.

Key, meanwhile (whose character is the comic relief for the movie), looked to lead the Hall H audience in a rendition of the ‘Transformers’ cartoon theme tune, only to find few takers. “Good, now we know who’s over 40,” he quipped.

Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura at the Comic-Con 2022 'Transformers One' presentation.
Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura at the Comic-Con 2022 ‘Transformers One’ presentation. Photo: Paramount Pictures.

This is what producer di Bonaventura had to say about the advantages of animation for a Transformers movie:

“If we did this as a live-action movie, it would probably cost $500M. What has been tricky in live-action is that every time a robot talks, it costs a lot of money. In animation, you can have them build out their character.”

And for Cooley, it was a chance to dig into the characters lore.

“Hasbro gave me the bible of ‘Transformers’, this Tolkien-length history –– so much to play with, a huge sandbox –– I wanted the feeling of what it was like to play with the toys as a kid, that feeling of nostalgia and joy trying to make these things work.”

When will ‘Transformers One’ be in theaters?

‘Transformers One’ will be released on September 20th.

    • The storyline is unknown for now.
    • The concept was set up at the end of last year’s ‘Transformers: Rise of the Beasts’.

Its own future might still be up in the air as corporate suitors continue to circle, but Paramount is pressing on with exploring its big characters and concepts.

And, following a tease at the end of last year’s ‘Transformers: Rise of the Beasts’, the studio now officially has a ‘Transformers’/‘G.I. Joe’ crossover in the works.

According to Deadline, the company has a star circling a lead role, as Chris Hemsworth is in talks to join the film. The actor is already involved with at least one side of this duo, since he’s the voice of Orion Pax –– the robot who will become Optimus Prime –– in this year’s animated ‘Transformers One’.

Right now, Paramount has not released any plot details about how the two universes will connect. There is precedent in comic books and, as mentioned, the end of last year’s ‘Transformers’ outing dropped a big hint, as Anthony Ramos’ Noah Diaz, having helped the Autobots and Maximals save the Earth, is introduced to a mysterious man named Agent Burke, played by Michael Kelly, who gives him a business card bearing the Joes’ logo.

Here’s what ‘Transformers’ regular producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura told Variety about the plans:

“Noah goes from somebody who cannot get a job, to a guy who gets the greatest job ever. It really felt organic to put it in here because you could relate it to the story. It didn’t feel like we were being cynical and like, ‘Good news, we could just jam G.I. Joes in here.’ The fans want a lot of things; if we do it and we don’t figure it out well, they’re going to be disappointed. It took us a while to figure out the Maximals, and now we have the hint of how to begin the Joes story.”

For now, Hemsworth’s role is unknown. Nor do we know whether anyone from the previous ‘G.I. Joe’ movies will carry over to this one or whether this will mark a chance to reset the storyline.

All we know at this point is that di Bonaventura is back to produce alongside Mark Vahradian, Michael Bay, Tom DeSanto and Don Murphy. Steven Spielberg and Hasbro Entertainment will be executive producers.

Winslow’s latest chronicles a string of high-level jewel heists up and down the Pacific Coast Highway that have gone unsolved for years, mostly because the perpetrator has lived by a strict code he calls “Crime 101”.

Police attribute the thefts to the Colombian cartels, but Detective Lou Lubesnick’s gut says it’s the work of just one man. Now the lone-wolf jewel thief is looking for that fabled final last score, and Lou breaks all the rules of the perp’s idea.

There are no details yet as to which roles the two stars could be playing, but we could picture Hemsworth (who is also one of the movie’s producers) as the thief and Mark Ruffalo as the cop.

Pedro Pascal was originally looking to star with Hemsworth, but his busy schedule has forced him to bow out.

Opening in theaters on May 24th is the fifth film in the ‘Mad Max’ franchise and a prequel/spinoff to 2015’s Oscar-nominated ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ entitled ‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga’, which was once again directed by visionary filmmaker George Miller.

The film features Alyla Browne (‘Three Thousand Years of Longing‘) and Anya Taylor-Joy (‘Dune: Part Two’) both as Furiosa, the role played by Charlize Theron in ‘Fury Road’. The cast also includes Chris Hemsworth (‘Thor: Love and Thunder’) as Dementus, Tom Burke (‘Mank’) as Praetorian Jack, Lachy Hulme (‘The Matrix Reloaded’) as Immortan Joe, and Angus Sampson (‘Insidious: The Red Door’) reprising his ‘Fury Road’ role as The Organic Mechanic.

Returning to the cinematic world he created, filmmaker George Miller once again delivers an exciting and thrilling adventure, which acts as both a prequel and a spinoff to ‘Fury Road’. While ‘Furiosa’ is more character driven than its predecessor it still features the same level of visually stunning action sequences, which are enhanced this time around by the character development. Both Alyla Browne and Anya Taylor-Joy give extremely strong performances as Furiosa, but it is Chris Hemsworth in his first truly great post ‘Thor’ performance as the evil yet hysterically funny biker villain, Dementus.

Beginning decades before ‘Fury Road’, the film first introduces us to a young Furiosa (Browne), who lives in a secret eutopia far away from the Wasteland called the Green Place of Many Mothers. When bikers accidentally come across their home, Furiosa bravely warns her people, but is abruptly kidnapped by the bikers and taken to their leader, the Warlord Dementus (Hemsworth). After a desperate rescue attempt by her mother (Charlee Fraser) fails, Furiosa is raised by Dementus so he can gain her trust and discover the location of her home to take it for his own.

Dementus soon sets his sights on taking over the Citadel from its leader, Immortan Joe (Lachy Hulme). But when his first attempt fails, he negotiates what he wants from Joe in exchange for Furiosa, who will be groomed as a wife to breed. After the exchange, Furiosa (now Taylor-Joy) eventually escapes and meets a transporter, or a Road Warrior if you will, named Praetorian Jack (Tom Burke). Jack agrees to teach her his ways in exchange for her help transporting goods for Immortan Joe and as time passes, she slowly becomes the character we remember from ‘Fury Road’, albeit a slightly younger version. But, when Dementus and his biker horde wage war on Immortan Joe, it gives Furiosa her chance at revenge and possibly finally returning home.

To be fair, I’ve never been a huge fan of the ‘Mad Max’ franchise. The first two films, ‘Mad Max’ and ‘Mad Max 2’ were a little too slow for me. ‘Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome’ injected more humor into the franchise and therefore was a bit more enjoyable. Miller certainly reinvented the franchise with ‘Fury Road’, which I enjoyed but not as much as most. The action was incredible and visually beautiful to watch, but the story was complicated and the characters, while interesting, were not explored or developed enough for me to ultimately care.

That is not the case with ‘Furiosa’ as Miller really takes his time to tell the title character’s backstory and develop not only her, but Hemsworth’s villain and Burke’s Jack as well. By the end of the movie, you really care about the characters and what happens to them. That only adds to the excitement of the action sequences, which in some ways are better than the last film. Miller has truly created a captivating world, and ‘Furiosa’ allows him to explore it in a way he never has before.

    Heavy Metal Action

Miller out does himself this time with a barrage of stunning, high-octane action sequences that rival what was seen in ‘Fury Road.’ Along with his cinematographer Simon Duggan, Miller conceives grand, sweeping master shots of the desolate Wasteland while also serving up metal-crashing explosive action sequences. One such scene involves a big rig truck barreling through the desert at top speeds while being attacked by bikers and hybrid helicopter-bikes. It’s unlike anything we’ve seen before from Miller in this universe and ups the action from the previous installments.

    Furiosa

Anya Taylor-Joy as Furiosa in Warner Bros. Pictures’ action adventure 'Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,' a Warner Bros. Pictures release.

Alyla Browne and Anya Taylor-Joy are both excellent as Furiosa and give a seamless performance together. However, it is worth noting that they equally share the role, and Taylor-Joy does not appear until the halfway mark. Once she does, her dialogue is limited, but the actress excels at expressing her emotions physically or with just a quick look. Taylor-Joy transforms into the basic character we know from ‘Fury Road’ quite well, and in the end is a dead ringer for Theron’s version. She also has great chemistry with Burke, and I’m glad they gave Furiosa an alley to relate to and care for.

But it is Browne who carries much of the film, and really builds the character for Taylor-Joy to take over. Browne creates a believably strong character and lays the groundwork for what is to come. The young actress is great opposite Hemsworth, making Furiosa and Dementus’ volatile relationship fun to watch.

    Chris Hemsworth’s Killer Performance

While he was unarguably great in the MCU movies, Chris Hemsworth has struggled ever since to find a role that fit him quite as well as Thor. He has had some success with the ‘Extraction’ movies, but not since ‘Avengers: Endgame’ has he really been able to tap into both his physical strength and his surprising comedic abilities … until now.

Dementus is the perfect Chris Hemsworth role! It allows him to be physically imposing, over-the-top funny, and as evil as he wants to be. The actor plays the character with an evil charm and a sadistic humor but is also physically believable in his action sequences. While Browne and Taylor-Joy might be the heart of the movie, Hemsworth steals every scene he’s in and may now be the best villain in the ‘Mad Max’ franchise.

    Final Thoughts

The film’s ending does beg questions about how this connects to ‘Fury Road’ and the future of the franchise, but it doesn’t take away from the emotionally affective and visually exciting theatrical experience the audience has just had. And at just over two and half hours, I can honestly say that it never felt long and kept my attention throughout.

In the end, ‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga’ is an exciting, action-packed, character driven film that succeeds on most levels. Director George Miller has created another visually stunning action adventure, that really takes its time to set up the characters and build on the world from the previous films. While Alyla Browne and Anya Taylor-Joy are wonderful together as the title character, Chris Hemsworth brings the action and the fun in one of his finest roles to date.

‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga’ receives 8.5 out of 10 stars.

Given the writers’ and actors’ strike rumbling on, you might think that the big deals struck with talent attachments might go quiet for a while. And indeed, things have certainly slowed down. But a big new deal in the offing is certainly making up the numbers in terms of star power.

According to Deadline, Chris Hemsworth and Pedro Pascal, two of the biggest names of the moment, are now on board to star in ‘Crime 101’.

The trade site is quick to point out two details –– the actors aren’t yet officially signed to deals, and when whoever snaps this one up (currently Amazon is looking likely), it’ll be an agreement with UK-based producers (Working Title’s Eric Fellner and Tim Bevan), which makes it acceptable during the strikes.

Bart Layton, who has directed movies such as 2018’s ‘American Animals’ and 2012’s ‘The Imposter’, is set to make this new movie –– or at least kick off development once the strikes are over and work can continue.

Described as a thriller in the vein of ‘Heat’, ‘Crime 101’ has high level jewel robberies taking place up and down the Pacific Coast –– and police have linked the thefts to the Colombian cartels. Detective Lou Lubesnick has other ideas, and he zeroes in on one perp, a thief looking for a final score.

‘Crime 101’ comes from Winslow’s 2020 collection ‘Broken’, six intense short novels connected by the themes of crime, corruption, vengeance, justice, loss, betrayal, guilt and redemption. In ‘Broken’, he creates a world of high-level thieves and low-life crooks, obsessed cops struggling with life on and off the job, private detectives, dope dealers, bounty hunters and fugitives, the lost souls driving without headlights through the dark night on the American criminal highway.

Among authors, Winslow is almost a big a name as the actors attached; his work has been picked up for adaptation in the past by the likes of Ridley Scott and James Mangold, while ‘ElvisAustin Butler is aboard a movie version of Winslow’s ‘City on Fire’ novel, aiming to play the main character, Danny Ryan, who is forced to grow from a street soldier into a ruthless leader to protect his friends, his family and the home he loves. Fighting the Mafia, the local cops and the feds, Danny intends to build a dynasty or die trying.

A lot of what has been optioned is in development, though past Winslow work that has arrived on screen includes 2012’s ‘Savages’, directed by Oliver Stone and 2007’s ‘The Death and Life of Bobby Z’.

Assuming ‘Crime 101’ makes it through the process, it could be just the latest high-profile project spawned from his prolific output.

After a couple of years of having stars show up in front of greenscreens to be composited into a fancy virtual stage to promote their latest wares, streaming giant Netflix was able to go live for the third TUDUM event: think Comic-Con meets a shareholder meeting, all entirely built around the company’s big hit shows, big name stars and those it has coming in the future.

Held this year in Brazil, the event was more raucous than ever as a parade of famous faces and some rising stars took to the stage (or sent videos) to raise fans’ anticipation for what they can expect in the coming months.

If you didn’t watch it, here’s a handy guide to our picks of what you missed…

‘Extraction 3’ is in the works

Given that ‘Extraction 2’ only just hit Netflix’s servers this past weekend, don’t go thinking that the new movie will be here particularly soon.

But star Chris Hemsworth (who plays veteran soldier Tyler Rake) and director Sam Hargrave arrived to thank fans for their support of the movies so far and promise more to come.

At least, in Hemsworth’s words, they’re talking about a third entry. And if we know anything about Tyler Rake, it’s that he’s exceedingly hard to kill.

    ‘Squid Game’s future

With ‘Squid Game’ proving to be one of the company’s biggest hits, Netflix is naturally getting as much as it can out of the Korean series.

Yet because creator Hwang Dong-hyuk takes his time making the show, there was no release date to tease just yet. Work is under way on Season 2, though, and Netflix was able to announce that stars Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-hun, Wi Ha-jun, and Gong Yoo will all be returning for the second installment, joining new cast members Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Sung-hoon, and Yang Dong-geun.

There was more to show from the company’s reality game show based on the series. Yes, for those applied to compete in non-lethal versions of ‘Squid Game’s trials, the first teaser for ‘Squid Game: The Challenge’ ran as part of the event. The show will premiere this coming November.

Upcoming from prolific producer/director Shawn Levy (who lists ‘Stranger Things’ among the projects he works on) is a new limited series called ‘All the Light We Cannot See’.

Based on Anthony Doerr’s Pulitzer Prize–winning novel of the same name, the limited series takes viewers back in time to German-occupied Paris. The coming-of-age story follows French teenager Marie-Laure (Aria Mia Loberti) who is blind and connects with Werner (Louis Hofmann), a German orphan, through radio frequencies. As Marie-Laure and her father (Mark Ruffalo) flee Paris to her uncle’s (Hugh Laurie) house in Saint-Malo, the two strangers’ paths intertwine.

The series itself will release on November 2nd.

Arnold Schwarzenegger, already anointed as Netflix’s Chief Action Officer, is sticking around beyond the first season of spy comedy series ‘FUBAR’ and the ‘Arnold’ documentary.

Schwarzenegger was at the TUDUM event in person to explain what he loves about Brazil and to thank those present and audiences around the world for watching ‘FUBAR’. Despite less-than-glowing reviews, the show will be back for a second season.

The action icon also debuted a blooper reel from the first season:

One of the most anticipated new offerings is the adaptation of Cixin Liu’s best-selling sci-fi trilogy of novels. And it boasts two showrunners who know a thing or two about bringing big books to small screens –– ‘Game of Thrones’ veterans David Benioff and DB Weiss.

Liu’s tomes tell a sprawling story about alien contact and humanity’s shifting fortunes, but here’s your basic synopsis:

“A young woman’s fateful decision in 1960s China reverberates across space and time to a group of brilliant scientists in the present day. As the laws of nature unravel before their eyes, five former colleagues reunite to confront the greatest threat in humanity’s history.”

The cast for this show includes Jess Hong, Benedict Wong, Eiza González, Jovan Adepo, Alex Sharp, John Bradley, Saamer Usmani, Liam Cunningham, Rosalind Chao, Jonathan Pryce, Marlo Kelly, Sea Shimooka, Ben Schnetzer and Zine Tseng. ‘3 Body Problem’ launches its first eight-episode season on Netflix in January.

‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ live-action series

Nothing to do with James Cameron’s giant movie franchise, the manga and anime versions of ‘Avatar’ are themselves hugely popular.

Set in an Asiatic, war-torn world where certain people can “bend” one of the four classical elements: water, earth, fire, or air. Aang (Gordon Cormier) is the “Avatar”, the only one capable of bending all the elements, and is destined to bring peace to the world from the Fire Nation.

With his new companions Katara (Kiawentiio Tarbell) and Sokka (Ian Ousley), Aang sets out to master the elements while being pursued by the exiled Fire Nation prince Zuko (Daniel Dae Kim), who seeks to regain his honor by capturing the Avatar.

The show’s stars unveiled an exciting first look at their faithfully realized characters, which you can see below.

Also on the anime adaptation front is the live-action take on the best-selling title of all time — ‘One Piece’, written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda.

The story follows the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy (Iñaki Godoy) and his crew, the Straw Hat Pirates, where he explores the Grand Line in search of the mythical treasure known as the “One Piece” in order to become the next King of the Pirates.

Mackenyu, Emily Rudd, Jacob Romero Gibson and Taz Skylar make up the rest of his crew for the show, which is being brought to life this time by showrunners Steven Maeda and Matt Owens.

‘One Piece’ will kick off on Netflix on 31 August, and you can find the teaser below…

Zack Snyder offers a look behind the scenes of ‘Rebel Moon’

Having brought zombies to Netflix’s screens with ‘Army of the Dead’ and prequel ‘Army of Thieves’, Zack Snyder has set his sights on sci-fi.

‘Rebel Moon’ focuses on the agricultural moon of Veldt, part of a sprawling galaxy of planets overseen by the ferocious, all-powerful Imperium which oversees the other planets from its home base of Mother World.

When Imperium forces expand out to Veldt’s local area, they target the moon as a potentially rich source of food and new recruits. But the natives, none too happy that their already struggling existence is being threatened, turns to a newcomer, Kora (Sofia Boutella) for help.

The isolated woman, who has her own past with the Imperium, knows that it would be foolish to try and negotiate a better deal with the powerful government, so she rounds up some fighters who could be of use against the might of the enemy. But keeping alliances together won’t be quite so easy…

Snyder’s big attempt to launch a franchise on the scale of ‘Star Wars’, has already put out some imagery and the director, alongside producer/wife Deborah Snyder and star Sofia Boutella, brought some behind-the-scenes footage.

Linda Hamilton joins ‘Stranger Things’ Season 5

‘Stranger Things’ is no stranger –– pun intended –– to 1980s movie and TV icons and it is adding at least one more in the shape of ‘Terminator’ veteran Linda Hamilton.

She appeared via video to reveal her casting on the show but wouldn’t be drawn on who she might be playing. And given the writers’ strike, we’re going to have to wait longer than planned for the fifth and final season of the show to arrive.

Gal Gadot previews ‘Heart of Stone’

It’s not just Chris Hemsworth that can bring the action goods. Gal Gadot has plenty of that sphere under her belt –– she has an iconic superhero character too and has appeared in the likes of ‘Red Notice’ and the ‘Fast & Furious’ franchise.

She’s back on Netflix with new action thriller ‘Heart of Stone’, which will see her playing Rachel Stone, an operative for a secretive organization known as The Charter, who step in when governments can’t handle tough situations. It’s a lonely life for the agents who serve as the knife’s edge of the operation. And things just get tougher when a hacker gets control of The Heart, a powerful tech system that helps the Charter with its missions. Compromised and alone, Stone will have to stop the new threat.

Jamie Dornan, Sophie Okonedo, Matthias Schweighöfer, Archie Madekwe, Alia Bhatt and Jing Lusi are also in the cast, and the show lands on Netflix on August 11th.
