Even for those who know him well, Chiwetel Ejiofor’s name can be a tongue twister.

The 38-year-old tells James Cordon Monday on “The Late Late Show” that his longtime barber stammered through a voicemail message while trying to utter his name.

“He was just leaving me a message because he was late,” the Oscar-nominated “12 Years a Slave” actor explains. “He got what I can only describe as a kind of Chiewetel-Tourette’s. He was on this message like, ‘Chit-e-well,’ and he would increase in pitch: ‘I’m running late,’ he says, mimicking the voice.

Despite the challenges of saying—and spelling his name correctly—the British star, who is of Nigerian origin, says he was once advised to change it, but balked at the idea.

“Not in drama school, but afterwards,” the 38-year-old explains. “I studied in theater—theater is traditional. It’s my name, isn’t it?”

  • Chiwetel Ejiofor May Play ‘Doctor Strange’ Foe Baron Mordo

BRITAIN-ENTERTAINMENT-THEATRE-AWARDSFollowing Academy Award winner Tilda Swinton, another critically-acclaimed actor may also be suiting up for “Doctor Strange“: Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Deadline reports that the Oscar nominee may be playing the Doctor’s nemesis, Baron Mordo, in the upcoming Marvel flick. But while Mordo is indeed a villain in the comics, the movie may be changing up his backstory a bit.

According to Deadline, Ejiofor’s Mordo won’t “be necessarily a completely villainous character. Rather, he’s an amalgamation of characters culled from ‘Doctor Strange”s mythology.” That’s similar to the switch pulled on Swinton’s character, The Ancient One, who was a Tibetan male in the “Doctor Strange” comics and is now being portrayed by the ethereal British actress.

The comic storyline says that both Mordo and the titular doctor — played by Benedict Cumberbatch — were students of The Ancient One. Mordo later tries to kill his former mentor; it remains to be seen whether that will still happen in the movie.

“Doctor Strange” is due in theaters on November 4, 2016.
