    • Sony has a new ‘Charlie’s Angels’ movie in development.
    • ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ co-writer Pete Chiarelli is on script duty.
    • There are no casting or director details yet.

Despite some less-than-successful attempts across the last decade or so, Sony clearly sees the upcoming 50th anniversary of ‘Charlie’s Angels’ as a reason to try to craft a new movie featuring crime-fighting women.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, The studio has ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ co-writer Pete Chiarelli developing a script for another new take on the characters.

We’ll have to wait and see who ends up taking this one on –– will it be a totally fresh take or could the company look to reunite movie trio Drew Barrymore, Lucy Liu and Cameron Diaz (more on them below)?

The show, a crime drama about a trio of women working at the Townsend private detective agency, debuted in 1976 and quickly dominated the pop culture conversation. The series originally cast Kate Jackson, Farrah Fawcett and Jaclyn Smith in the leading roles — and catapulted them into TV history.

Cheryl Ladd joined the show in season 2 and starred through the rest of its 115-episode run. John Forsythe voiced their unseen boss, Charlie Townsend, who directed the operation over the telephone.

Barrymore, Liu and Diaz starred in two movie versions in 2000 and 2003, but more recent attempts, including a new TV series and director Elizabeth Banks’ 2019 film, didn’t fare as well.

There’s no word yet on what Chiarelli’s take might be.

When will the new ‘Charlie’s Angels’ movie be on screen?

Sony hasn’t announced anything yet, so with this in “early development,” we’ll have to wait and see when it might arrive.

Last September, we brought the news that ‘Shout It Out Loud,’ the long-gestating music biopic of iconic rockers KISS had taken a big step forward, as ‘Charlie’s Angels’ and ‘Uglies’ director McG was making a deal to direct it.

Since then, he’s officially signed on and developed the movie further, and now Deadline brings word that singer/actor Nick Jonas will play a key role in the film, that of KISS lead singer Paul Stanley.

With the movie really starting to come together, the aim is now to kick off shooting either late this year or early in 2026, with Jonas given the time to train to perform Stanley’s trademark power vocals.

A key further element for the movie is tracking down a star who can appear as legendary bass player Gene Simmons.

Should you not already be aware of the glam-rockers, here’s a little history lesson…

KISS was formed in New York City by Stanley, Simmons, Ace Frehley and Peter Criss in 1973. Known for their signature kabuki-style face paint and larger-than-life, pyrotechnic-filled performances, the band broke out with the 1975 live album “Alive!” which featured the anthem “Rock and Roll All Nite” and solidified their status as one of the era’s top acts.

The band’s most successful albums include “Destroyer,” “Love Gun,” “Alive II” and “Dynasty,” which produced hits including “Beth,” “Detroit Rock City” and “I Was Made for Lovin’ You.”

Frehley and Criss departed KISS decades ago, leaving Simmons and Stanley as the lone original members. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014, the band spent four years on the road for their farewell “End of the Road” World Tour, officially retiring after their final concert at Madison Square Garden in December.

Yet despite leaving the stage themselves, they’ve set up digital avatars which will continue to play virtual concert sets. And the group sold their music catalog, name, image and likeness to the Sweden-based Pophouse Entertainment in April last year, in a deal reportedly worth more than $300 million.

We now know a little more about the movie –– it’ll focus primarily on the group’s early formation in the 1970s.

Here’s what Stanley has said about his time before joining the band:

“I was deaf in one ear and had a slight deformity that made me look different. I was this short, fat kid, and music became my salvation, a place to hide and dream. And when I played music, there were always girls around.”

And here’s Simmons on what drew him from his life as a Hasidic Orthodox Jew from Israel to rock music:

“I remember walking out onto the street, seeing this Spanish girl jumping rope across the street, and staring at her long black hair slapping against this great butt. It occurred to me this was better than religion. How could I get near that?”

Where else have we seen Nick Jonas?

Nick Jonas in 'The Good Half'. Photo: Utopia.
Nick Jonas in ‘The Good Half’. Photo: Utopia.

Jonas grew up on the Broadway stage in numerous musicals, including starring turns in ‘Les Misérables,’ ‘Hairspray’ and ‘How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying,’ and he played singer Frankie Valli in ‘Jersey Boys Live.’

He’s best known in music circles as part of family band The Jonas Brothers. The group –– siblings Kevin and Joe among them—rose to fame in the mid-2000s. They gained popularity through the Disney Channel, starring in ‘Camp Rock’ and their own show ‘Jonas.’ Their early albums like “It’s About Time” and “A Little Bit Longer” were big commercial successes.

The band took a hiatus in 2013 to pursue solo projects but reunited in 2019 with the hit single “Sucker”, which topped the Billboard Hot 100. They released the comeback album “Happiness Begins” the same year. They’ve continued touring and releasing music since.

Yet Nick has also found time to build out his acting career, appearing in movies such as ‘Midway,’ ‘Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle,’ ‘Goat’ and ‘You’re Cordially Invited.’ He recently worked on ‘Power Ballad’ opposite Paul Rudd.

When will ‘Shout It Out Loud’? be in theaters?

Backers STX Entertainment haven’t yet set a release date for the movie, presumably holding off until more cast are announced.

    • The film will be looking for a distribution at the Cannes Market.

Outside of his Amazon series work, Chris Pratt may still be looking to prove that he can carry projects beyond his Marvel and other franchise gigs. ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ was certainly a big hit last year, though that was powered more by video game nostalgia than his name. And he’ll be heard rather than seen in the upcoming ‘The Garfield Movie’, which focuses on the comic strip cat brought to CG life on screens.

According to Deadline, he’s part of a new movie package that looks to find success (specifically, a buyer) at this year’s Cannes Market. Pratt is attached to star in ‘Way of the Warrior Kid’, which will adapt retired Navy SEAL Jock Willink’s book.

With McG aboard to direct, the new film looks to target audiences who want a story of youth empowerment without a fantasy angle.

What’s the story of ‘Way of the Warrior Kid’?

Chris Pratt in Prime Video’s ‘The Terminal List’
Chris Pratt in Prime Video’s ‘The Terminal List’

Willink drew on his experiences and training to write the book about Marc, a self-doubting kid who gets bullied and is hard pressed to complete a single pullup. That’s until his uncle Jake, an elite Navy SEAL, is injured on a mission and moves in with his sister for rehab. When he discovers his 11 year old nephew Marc is struggling academically, socially and physically, Jake takes on a new mission: using his SEAL Team training over three months of summer to help the youth find his inner warrior.

Here’s what Willink says about the book, which has since spawned various follow-ups and spin-offs, including merchandise:

“I spent my adult life in the military. I was in the SEAL Teams, deployed all over the place, went up through the chain of command, and was lucky to have had a blessed career. That whole time, I also had a wife and four kids. I wanted to read them books and I would go to the store or to the library and I just couldn’t find any that I liked. The straw that broke the camel’s back was a pirate book. And it was filled with the weakest, most pathetic pirates I’d ever heard of in my life.”

Aside from Pratt and McG, the project has ‘Without Remorse’ scribe Will Staples writing the script, which UTA Independent Film Group and FilmNation will be putting on the market in France.

This is what Pratt said of the project:

“Will Staples’ screenplay is incredible. I’ve known Jocko Willink for a couple of years, so I was eager to read the script based on his series of children’s books. I believe in the power of storytelling and felt particularly called to the material. I have faith this film will help to shape today’s youth, putting them on the right path. Our young people need this movie, and I hope this story will help bridge the growing divide and inspire the next generation to learn valuable lessons about discipline, self-reliance, strength, and compassion. This is the kind of movie that can define a generation, like ‘Karate Kid’ or ‘Rocky’. This is the kind of movie I want to show my kids. So, with the help of an incredible creative team and the right partner, we’re gonna make it.”

When will ‘Way of the Warrior Kid’ be in theaters?

With no distributor attached as of yet, there is zero information on whether this one will hit theaters, let alone a release date. But given the star power of Pratt and the confidence-building kid angle (that will appeal to a big audience), we’d expect this one to be moving forward before too long.

  • ‘Cocaine Bear’ Interview: Director Elizabeth Banks

    2uDP6B7O

Opening in theaters on February 24th is the new dark comedy ‘Cocaine Bear,’ which was directed by Elizabeth Banks (‘Pitch Perfect 2,’ ‘Charlie’s Angels’) and is loosely based on a true story.

What is ‘Cocaine Bear’ based on?

According to Wikipedia, the film is inspired by the real story of a 175-pound American black bear that died after ingesting a duffel bag full of cocaine in December 1985. The cocaine had been dropped out of an airplane piloted by Andrew C. Thornton II, a former narcotics officer and convicted drug smuggler, because his plane was carrying too heavy a load. Thornton then jumped out of the plane with a faulty parachute and died. The bear was found three months later in northern Georgia alongside 40 opened plastic containers of cocaine.

    Xpj6UdQCbjnCNmIPpRUOZ7

    What is ‘Cocaine Bear’ about?

In the film, after Thornton’s accident and the bear ingests the cocaine, he goes on a killing rampage in a small town in Georgia. The movie follows three different groups, Sari (Keri Russell), a single mother looking for her daughter (Brooklynn Prince) and her friend (Christian Convery) who are lost in the woods, Eddie (Alden Ehrenreich) and Daveed (O’Shea Jackson Jr.), two drug smugglers forced by Eddie’s father (Ray Liotta) to recover his missing cocaine, and Bob (Isiah Whitlock Jr.), the law enforcement officer hot on their trail.

    Who is in ‘Cocaine Bear?’

‘Cocaine Bear’ stars Keri Russell (‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’) as Sari, O’Shea Jackson Jr. (‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’) as Daveed, Alden Ehrenreich (‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’) as Eddie Dentwood, Ray Liotta (‘Goodfellas’) as Syd Dentwood, Isiah Whitlock Jr. (‘Da 5 Bloods’) as Bob, Christian Convery (‘The Tiger Rising’) as Henry, Brooklyn Prince (‘The Florida Project’) as Dee Dee, Jesse Tyler Ferguson (‘Ice Age: Collision Course’) as Peter, Margo Martindale (‘Downsizing’) as Ranger Liz, and Matthew Rhys (‘A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood’) as Andrew C Thornton II.

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with actress and director Elizabeth Banks about her work on ‘Cocaine Bear,’ her initial reaction to the screenplay and the true story it is based on, balancing the movie’s tones of comedy and horror, and working with Weta FX to create the bear.

Director Elizabeth Banks' 'Cocaine Bear' opens in theaters on February 24th.
Director Elizabeth Banks’ ‘Cocaine Bear’ opens in theaters on February 24th.

You can read our full interview below or click on the video player above to watch our interviews with Banks, as well as Keri Russell, O’Shea Jackson Jr. and Alden Ehrenreich.

Moviefone: To begin with, what was your first reaction when you read a screenplay titled ‘Cocaine Bear’ and learned of the true story it is based on, and as a director, how did you balance the film’s different tones of comedy and horror?

Elizabeth Banks: My first thought when reading it was, ‘This can’t possibly be based on a true story.’ Then I went down the rabbit hole of investigating what had really happened. At that point I realized, in real life the bear had overdosed on the cocaine and died. I thought, ‘Oh, man, this movie is like a redemption story for that bear.’ This is a way to avenge the untimely death of that bear. Because I really felt for that bear, that bear was like collateral damage. It didn’t know what it was getting into. It doesn’t want to do drugs!

I loved that there was this crazy idea of a rampaging bear on a bender. That’s such a big, high concept, wild, crazy thing that, actually the way to balance the tone was really to ground everything else. So everything else has to be super grounded. The real story of a mom just trying to find her daughter. The real story of a guy grieving the loss of his wife, trying to be connected to his best friend again, trying to break away from his father. A man who is like, ‘I’ve got to find these drugs or we’re going to get killed.’

Those are very grounded, relatable, emotional storylines that set against the backdrop of the bear. It’s in that space in between where human beings do crazy things in reaction to the bear that I really felt that’s where the humor was, that’s where the wackiness could live, as long as the characters remained relatable to the audience.

MF: Finally, can you talk about working with Weta to create the design of the bear and developing it to look as real as possible?

EB: Absolutely. Well, I’ve said before I thought that this movie was super risky for me. What I meant by that was I had to give up control over the lead character of the film. I had no idea while we were making it, if we were going to pull off the bear. And if the bear didn’t work, then the movie didn’t work.

The partnership with Weta, they were great. From day one, they made me laugh. They got the tone. I think they saw it as an opportunity to do really intense, old school CGI. They’re so used to creating crazy, fantastical worlds in outer space and people flying around. This was like, ‘No, no, no. You’ve got to create something so realistic that people think a real bear was on set. How are we going to do that?’ This has to be a documentary about the bear.

And the level of detail that went into animating this bear, this incredible lead animator, Carmen Leggiero, who did so much homework on how bears act. We looked at so many reference videos, picking and choosing every detail of the bear: the size of its head, its nose, its ears, its eyes, the coloration of its fur, the textures, all of that. What does it look like wet? What does it look like with blood on it? What does it look like with guts on it? What does it look like when it’s eating? That was the big, big, big question mark hanging over the movie until the very end. And I am just pleased as punch with the results.

‘Cocaine Bear’ is produced by Universal Pictures, Brownstone Productions and Lord Miller Productions, and scheduled for release on February 24th.

Who else but Glover could have delivered this opening dialogue to main character Shadow Moon (Ricky Whittle): “I know your blood type and your recurring nightmare. B-positive and an orchard of bones.” As Mr. World, the New God of globalization and the leader of the New Gods, Glover is dapper, sinister and kind of an amalgamation of every role he’s ever played.

In this dark drama based on a true story, when a teenager kills his girlfriend, his friends all come to view the body. And neglect to tell the police. Glover plays Layne, who makes it his solemn duty to keep the cover-up going. As the story goes, Glover’s performance was so hyperactive, the distributors insisted they add a line to the script about his character being a speed freak.

When Marty McFly goes back in time, getting his teenage mom to fall for dweeby George McFly is a tall order. How many shy nerds can deliver a line like “You’re my density” and make it sound both overwhelmingly sweet and bizarrely creepy? Lucky for Marty, his existence is assured when George proves to be as romantic as he is awkward. (The franchise dropped Glover from future installments, alas. But this one outing proved to be timeless.)

If you think Nicolas Cage and Johnny Depp were the oddest indie actors working in the ’90s, you must not have seen a bewigged, platform-shoed Glover high-kicking in this buddy comedy.
It’s peak Glover: He stars as an eccentric young man whose mother won’t return his stereo unless he makes some friends. His road trip buddy? A guy looking for a place to bury his frozen cat.

Arguably, the oddest character Glover ever played is… himself. In this infamous Letterman appearance (that predates “Rubin and Ed”), the incredibly nervous actor is sensitive to the audience laughing at his wig and his platform shoes. He reads tabloid stories about his eccentricities, then then challenges Letterman to an arm wrestling contest. Then he nearly takes out the late night host with a high kick.

  • ‘Charlie’s Angels’ Trailer Introduces a New Generation of Crime Fighters

    Sony

The new “Charlie’s Angels” need some wigs, toys, clothes — and definitely multiple closets.

Sony dropped the first trailer for the reboot of the action-spy franchise starring Kristen Stewart, “Aladdin’s” Naomi Scott, and newcomer Ella Balinska as the titular crimefighting Angels. The film comes from director Elizabeth Banks (also playing one of multiple Bosleys).

In this new take on “Angels,” the mysterious Charles Townsend’s security and investigative agency has expanded internationally. With the world’s smartest, bravest, and most highly trained women all over the globe, there are now teams of Angels guided by multiple Bosleys taking on the toughest jobs everywhere.

Aside from Banks, those multiple Bosleys are also played by Patrick Stewart, Djimon Hounsou, and Sam Claflin. The movie also throws in Netflix heartthrob Noah Centineo as a love interest.

The trailer certainly gives off a different vibe from the ’00s version of “Charlie’s Angels,” though there is still a sense of frothy fun (especially given the emphasis on costume changes).

“Charlie’s Angels” opens in theaters November 15.

The anticipation for the first trailer for the upcoming “Charlie’s Angels” reboot just got that much higher.

Miley Cyrus teased in a tweet Wednesday that she teamed up with Ariana Grande and Lana Del Rey for the movie’s soundtrack. The former “Voice” judge reposted a 14-second video that Sony had unveiled Wednesday to preview the trailer’s release on Thursday, and she wrote, “WE ARE COMING!,” and tagged Grande and Del Rey.

The video indicates that the trailer is “uploading” and shows the franchise’s logo. It notably also includes a snippet of what is presumably the trio’s collaboration. You can’t hear any of their voices on the track, but it sounds promising nonetheless.

Grande got in on the fun with a tweet, too, but she didn’t share as much as Cyrus did. The pop star simply uploaded the video and wrote, “trailer tomorrow,” tagging the “Charlie’s Angels” Twitter account and adding an angel emoji. Del Rey, on the other hand, hasn’t posted the video at the time of this writing.

There’s a lot to look forward to with “Charlie’s Angels.” It’s directed by Elizabeth Banks (“Pitch Perfect”) and stars Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, Ella Balinska, Banks, Djimon Hounsou, and Noah Centineo, among others. The reboot is due out Nov. 15.

The latest “Charlie’s Angels” movie opens Nov. 15, and its director and co-writer Elizabeth Banks says the date “can’t come soon enough.”

The multi-hyphenate took the time to hype the film as first-look photos were released Thursday via EW. She chatted with the publication about the pictures and what fans can expect from the upcoming film starring Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, and Ella Balinska. We’ll see the trio as tough crime-fighters in what Banks told EW is a “continuation” instead of a reboot or remake.

The director also made sure to post the photos to Instagram on Thursday, where she shared her excitement about the movie’s release date. The photos show the Angels in action, from working undercover together to interacting with others. Stewart, Scott, and Balinska all show  up in the images, as do their co-stars Banks and Noah Centineo.

The upcoming “Charlie’s Angels” reboot is still coming out in November, but it now has a new release date.

The action comedy flick has been pushed back two weeks to Nov. 15, Deadline reports. It was previously scheduled to hit theaters on Nov. 1, putting it up against “Terminator: Dark Fate.” Now, they won’t go head-to-head over opening weekend after all.

The new date coincides with the debuts of two dramas, “The Good Liar” and an untitled James Mangold film, as well as the rom-com “Last Christmas.” In theory, “Charlie’s Angels” will now see less competition than it would against a more similar film — and one that’s part of a major franchise to boot.

“Charlie’s Angels” stars Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, and Ella Balinska as the crime-fighting women at the center of the story. It is based on the iconic TV series, which was later adapted for the big screen in 2000’s “Charlie’s Angels,” starring Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, and Lucy Liu. The reboot is directed by Elizabeth Banks.

Mark your calendar for Nov. 15, Angels.
