  • Lucille Ball Biopic Starring Cate Blanchett Is Coming to Amazon

'Manifesto' premiere - 2017 Tribeca Film FestivalAfter several years in development, it looks like the Lucille Ball biopic starring Cate Blanchett is finally moving forward, with Amazon Studios snagging the rights to the high-profile project this week.

Deadline reports that the flick, called “Lucy and Desi,” is currently casting to find its other titular star, with producers reportedly looking for a big name to play Ball’s on- and off-screen husband, Desi Arnaz. According to the trade, Blanchett’s fellow Oscar winner Javier Bardem is being floated as one possibility.

Stars of a similar wattage are also reportedly being sought to play the other members of the key “I Love Lucy” foursome, William Frawley and Vivian Vance, a.k.a. Lucy and Ricky’s friends and landlords, Fred and Ethel. No specific names have been made public just yet, though.

Blanchett was first linked to the feature back in 2015, and according to The Hollywood Reporter, is still not officially on board, but is currently in talks. The script for “Lucy and Desi” was penned by Aaron Sorkin, and chronicles the relationship of Ball and Arnaz, who were married for 20 years before splitting in 1960. The couple’s children, Lucie Arnaz Luckinbill and Desi Arnaz Jr., are producing the authorized biopic, which will be based in part on memoirs written by both of their late parents.

Stay tuned to see who they find to play the Desi/Ricky to Blanchett’s Lucy.

  • Val Kilmer Obsessively Tweets About Cate Blanchett

Val KilmerCate Blanchett’s biggest fan is (who knew?) Val Kilmer. Over the weekend, “The Doors” actor let loose with a series of adoring tweets about the Aussie actress, with whom he briefly shared the screen in 2003’s “The Missing.”

In a social media blitz that rivals Jim Carrey’s declaration of love for Emma Stone, the 57-year-old actor recounted a time he “flew all the way to Australia” to meet the Oscar winner — only to be met instead by her husband. (She’s been married to screenwriter Andrew Upton since 1997.)

He then shared that she’s “just as amazing in person” and “so real it’s almost unreal.”

Next, he marvels at her “dazzling” skill with a shovel.

One Twitter user responded, per Fox News: “Val, She’s a married woman. You’re coming off a little intense. You don’t have to share this all on Twitter. Maybe buy a diary.” To which the actor responded, “Nothing in the least creepy about loving someone. What kind of world do you come from?” (One with a little restraint?)

According to Fox News, Kilmer also shared a black-and-white shot of Blanchett, “accompanied by a musing of his own: ‘I mean even if she couldn’t act you know what I mean?,’” but the tweet appears to have been deleted.

After his Cate-is-great tweets, he next shared his love for Jessica Chastain.

Before the Blanchett lovefest, he retweeted a Yahoo UK story documenting his “bizarre, star-studded stories” on Twitter, including anecdotes about Carly Simon, ’60s French sex symbol Brigitte Bardot, and Peter Gabriel.

He currently appears in the Terrence Malick film “Song to Song.”

  • ‘Ocean’s 8’ Lands Summer 2018 Release Date

Premiere Of Warner Bros. Pictures' "Our Brand Is Crisis" - Red CarpetAfter we finally learned a few details about the upcoming all-female “Ocean’s Eleven” spinoff, “Ocean’s 8,” the film has now landed an official release date.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Ocean’s 8” will hit theaters on June 8, 2018. The flick has a majorly starry cast, headlined by Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Rihanna, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, and Awkwafina, who will be portraying the titular criminals.

Kaling recently spilled a few details about the flick, including that it’s set in New York, and that the plot has some connection to the fashion industry. According to the actress, filming is set to begin in about two weeks (and according to THR, will be on location in NYC).

“Ocean’s 8” also has some major star power behind the scenes, with Oscar nominee Gary Ross (“Seabiscuit,” “The Hunger Games”) directing the flick. Steven Soderbergh, who helmed the original “Ocean’s” trilogy, has collaborated with Ross several times over the years (including on “Ocean’s”), and will serve as a producer on the spinoff.

Ross previously noted that his film is “a continuation” of the tone and story of the original flicks, but also has its own distinct vision. We’re curious to see what the director and his phenomenal cast create together.

  • ‘Ocean’s 8’ Adds Rihanna, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, 2 More

Right now “Ocean’s 8” is at least The Magnificent Seven, with five more actresses ready to join the previously announced Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett.

According to Deadline, Warner Bros. will start filming the Gary Ross-directed spinoff in October. Deals are said to be “close” with Anne Hathaway, Rihanna, Helena Bonham Carter, Mindy Kaling, and rapper/actress Awkwafina (aka Nora Lum).

In order to have the “Eight” of the title, they need one more, plus possibly cameos from the cast of the George Clooney/Brad Pitt/Matt Damon “Ocean’s” trilogy (which also started as a remake of the 1960 Sinatra/Martin/Davis “Ocean’s 11” movie, let’s not forget).

Jennifer Lawrence seems like she’d be a great kicker for this cast, but whoever is fine.

Back in June, director Gary Ross told /FILM this film would have “a pretty similar tone” to Steven Soderbergh’s “Ocean’s” trilogy.

“You know, Steven Soderbergh and I are incredibly close friends, and we would not have done this if we weren’t. I don’t think he would’ve wanted anyone to do it if we weren’t. This is very much an extension and a continuation. He’s a producer on the movie. […] We’re different filmmakers, obviously, so there will be those differences, but one of the things I’m drawn to is the amazing tone Steven was able to create, and we discuss that a lot. We discuss the cinema a lot, the shooting style, the rhythm, the editing style, and the music. We discuss it all. I’m in no way trying to reinvent the tone, and I’m thrilled and honored to be extending it. It’s really fun to work with.”

What do you think of the cast so far? If they start production in October, they don’t have much time left to pick No. 8.

  • ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ Adds Jeff Goldblum, Karl Urban, Cate Blanchett

ThorAs if he’s not in enough big movie franchises, Jeff Goldblum is joining “Thor: Ragnarok.”

Marvel announced the cast for the sequel, which stars Chris Hemsworth as the titular god. The studio also confirmed the addition of Cate Blanchett, who’s been rumored for months to play the main villain, Hela. This makes her the first major female villain in a Marvel movie, a subject on which Stephen Colbert recently blasted the studio.

Goldblum — who’s next seen in “Independence Day: Resurgence” — plays the Grand Master, an Elder of the Universe with millennia of knowledge. Karl Urban also jumps on board as Skurge, an Askgardian villain, while Tessa Thompson steps into the role of Valkyrie, an Askgardian hero.

Marvel also confirmed the inclusion of Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk, and the return of cast members Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Idris Elba as Heimdall and Anthony Hopkins as Odin.

  • Oscar Predictions 2016: Who Will Win Best Actress?

There are only a few days until the 2016 Oscars are finally underway, which means it’s time to firm up those predictions and get your ballot all ready to go.

This week, leading up to film’s biggest night of the year, Moviefone’s editors will be revealing our predictions in the ceremony’s biggest categories. Let’s start with a Best Actress. The nominees are:

    Cate Blanchett, “Carol”
    Brie Larson, “Room”
    Jennifer Lawrence, “Joy”
    Charlotte Rampling, “45 Years”
    Saoirse Ronan, “Brooklyn”

Here, we’ve filled you in on who we think will win, as well as who we feel truly deserves to take home that coveted golden statue.

    Tim Hayne
Who Will Win: Brie Larson for “Room.” She’s a lock at this point. She’s already won the Golden Globe, SAG Award, and BAFTA for Best Actress (the trifecta!), so if she loses, it’s gonna be a shocker — and the Academy doesn’t do shockers. Her stiffest competition is Cate Blanchett, who’s already won Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress, and the buzz around her Oscar-nominated performance in “Carol” is quickly fading. Plus, the Academy loves an ingenue, and Brie Larson has ingenue written all over her.

Who Should Win: Brie Larson. Have you seen “Room”? Because that’s all it takes to know she delivered the best performance of 2015.

    Phil Pirrello
    Who Will Win: Brie Larson.

Who Should Win: Brie Larson. Up against actors Cate Blanchett and Jennifer Lawrence — who can basically score a nomination just by showing up — Larson emerged early on as a frontrunner with her compelling, and at times unlikable, portrayal of a mother held captive with her son in a room for years. Larson is scary-good at delivering on the role’s emotional and physical demands, creating a character you can’t help but root for — even when the pressures of raising a young child in these conditions get the better of her.

    Rachel Horner
Who Will Win: Brie Larson. Even though I would love Saoirse Ronan to win for “Brooklyn,” it’s going to Brie Larson this year for “Room.” She’s the clear frontrunner and I would be legitimately shocked if it went to anyone else.

Who Should Win: Brie Larson. She put on a great performance that was vastly different than what we’ve usually seen her in. She deserves it.

    Alana Altmann
Who Will Win: Brie Larson, considering she’s the trophy queen of the season thus far. Blanchett may be an Oscar fave, but her “Carol” performance hasn’t garnered the accolades we all thought it would early on.

Who Should Win: Brie Larson. Her gripping portrayal of a mother fighting for survival was the most original and raw performance of the bunch. The vast emotional range she was able to showcase is an acting force to be reckoned with.

  • The 2016 Oscar Nominees’ 19 Worst Movies

%Slideshow-366252% Amidst all the Oscars glamour and heartfelt speeches, let’s not forget that an actor’s life is not all awards and ovations. It’s very often extremely crappy movies that are best forgotten.

Sorry, 2016 Oscar nominees! We’re here to remind everyone you starred in these sub-par movies. From Leonardo DiCaprio‘s close encounter with Critters, to Kate Winslet in whatever the hell “Movie 43” was, here are 19 movies that this year’s nominees probably wish they could un-happen.

  • Cate Blanchett to Play Norse Villain in ‘Thor: Ragnarok’: Report

2016 Weinstein Company And Netflix Golden Globes After Party - ArrivalsCate Blanchett may have just landed another Oscar nomination for the drama “Carol,” but the actress has an even more buzzworthy prospect on the horizon: A starring role in a Marvel tentpole flick. Blanchett has been rumored for weeks to be joining the cast of “Thor: Ragnarok,” and now, there may be some clues as to who she’s playing.

First came word that Blanchett would be one of the female leads of the flick. Then, earlier this month, Mark Ruffalo — who’s set to reprise his Hulk role in “Thor 3” — let it slip that she would be playing a villain. And Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige also teased that the film would be very different from the first two “Thor” movies, and take place primarily in the cosmos.

Using those clues, the folks over at Geek.com have pieced together that Blanchett is probably playing a character called Hela, the Norse goddess of death. Here’s the scoop from the site:

Sources have confirmed with Geek.com that the big bad of Thor: Ragnarok will be Hela, the Marvel comic book character who is the ruler of Hel and the realm of Niflheim. Considering Ruffalo let slip that Blanchett will play a baddie, it’s probably safe to assume that she’ll assume the role of Hela. She’ll be her normal comic book self, complete with her cloak and power over the dead souls of the Nine Realms. Hela will make it to Asgard, where she’ll be in cahoots with Tom Hiddleston’s Loki, current motives unknown.

Geek.com has a bunch more spoiler-y details for how Hela could factor into the larger Marvel Phase 3 plan (including “Avengers: Infinity War”). It certainly sounds like a juicy role befitting an A-list star, and Blanchett’s acting chops and ethereal looks are a powerful combination that make her a natural choice to play an all-powerful Norse villainess.

Of course, as with all things Marvel, nothing is officially official until an announcement is made. Stay tuned.

  • Cate Blanchett May Star in ‘Thor: Ragnarok’: Report

5th AACTA Red Carpet Arrivals Presented by PrestoOscar-winning actors joining genre flicks is nothing new (just look at Lupita Nyong’o in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” for the latest example), but this recent bit of casting scoop is truly surprising: Cate Blanchett is reportedly in talks to join “Thor: Ragnarok.”

According to Variety, Blanchett is currently negotiating to “play one of the new female leads” in the upcoming Marvel flick, which is due out in late 2017. Though it would be the actress’s first foray into the world of comic book flicks, she does have some experience in fanboy fair, with a starring role in the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, which she later reprised in the “Hobbit” films.

But Blanchett is once again in the midst of awards season talk, thanks to her titular turn in the drama “Carol,” and her reported decision to line up a tentpole flick as her next project is a bit eyebrow-raising. Then again, Marvel is probably offering some serious dough for whatever part she may play, and her Aussie connection to “Thor” star Chris Hemsworth probably doesn’t hurt, either.

And using her Oscar work as an example (a Best Supporting Actress statuette for portraying fellow Academy Award winner Katharine Hepburn in “The Aviator,” a Best Actress trophy for “Blue Jasmine“), Blanchett truly can play it all, so it’s likely that she’d fit right in to the MCU. Marvel declined to comment on Variety’s report, so we’ll have to wait for official word before we know this is a done deal. But it’s an intriguing prospect, and we’re certainly curious to see the actress in action, should this news pan out. Stay tuned.

“Thor: Ragnarok” is due in theaters on November 3, 2017.

  • Best of Late Night TV: Cate Blanchett’s Lip Flip and James Corden’s ‘Late Late Show’ Binge

If you’re like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don’t worry; we’ve got you covered. Here’s the best of what happened last night on late night.

Let’s get this party started with a game of Lip Flip on “The Tonight Show.” Yeah, it’s always weird and funny, but the addition of Cate Blanchett makes things particularly YAAAAAAS.

Over on “The Late Show,” Stephen Colbert attempted to convince Bill Maher to join catholicism. He was…uh…not into it. Prepare for awkwardness.

Jimmy Kimmel Live” and chatted about his visit to the Great Wall of China, where Jennifer Lawrence forced him to lug around her Valentino bag. The explanation? “Jen didn’t want to carry her handbag anymore.” Bless this man. Bless his heart.

Speaking of Liam Hemsworth, his fellow “Hunger Games” star, The Late Late Show,” and was mocked mercilessly for it. Whatever, having a six pack and an Australian accent is hard, guys.

Finally (and also on “The Late Late Show”), James Corden was so inspired by Shia LeBeouf’s meta movie-watching extravaganza that he spent three days binging every single episode of his show. The results? Scary.
