  • Latest News about Snow White, Wicked, Black Adam, Guardians of the Galaxy 3, & more

There have been a slew of big-time casting announcements over the last week, from ‘Wicked’ to ‘Snow White,’ and Leonardo DiCaprio taking on one of the world’s most notorious murderers.

We’ve also seen production updates for highly awaited films like ‘Black Adam,’ ‘John Wick 4,’ and ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 3.’ As well as a delay for the Star Wars spinoff ‘Rogue Squadron,’ and the release of the final ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ trailer.

If you missed anything this week, Moviefone has you covered!

    CASTING NEWS:

    WICKED

The Hollywood production of the fan-favorite Broadway musical ‘Wicked‘ kicked things into high gear this week when director Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians) announced on Twitter that he had found his Elphaba and Glinda in Oscar-nominee Cynthia Erivo and Grammy-winning musician Ariana Grande.

Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel originated the roles of Elphaba and Glinda, respectively, on Broadway, and the big screencasting has drawn some critique from fans, especially for Grande’s casting. However, Chenoweth answered Grande’s critics on Instagram by saying, “You were destined for this role. The best Glinda you will be.”

    SNOW WHITE

Deadline announced last week that Wonder Woman actress Gal Gadot was cast to play the Evil Queen in Disney’s upcoming live action Snow White. Directed by Marc Webb (The Amazing Spider-Man) and starring Rachel Zegler (West Side Story) in the title role, the adaption will also feature new music from Oscar-winners Benji Pasek and Justin Paul (La La Land).

Disney released the original animated version of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in 1938, which was based on the fairytale by the Brothers Grimm. Gadot will next be seen in Netflix’s ‘Red Notice,’ which also stars Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds, before appearing next year in the Kenneth Branagh-directed sequel, ‘Death on the Nile.’

    JIM JONES

Yesterday, Deadline reported that MGM has made a seven-figure deal with Leonardo DiCaprio to produce and star in ‘Jim Jones,’ which is about the notorious murderer and what led to 1978’s tragic Jonestown Massacre. DiCaprio will produce through his company, Appian Way Productions, with a script written by Scott Rosenberg (Jumanji: The Next Level).

In November 1978, under Jim Jones’ leadership, 900 members of the People’s Temple in Guyana, including children, were killed in a mass suicide or gunned down by Jones himself. The events were chronicled in the 2018 CNN documentary, ‘Escaping Jonestown.’ DiCaprio’s casting follows a string of Oscar-nominated performances including ‘The Wolf of Wall Street,’ ‘The Revenant,’ for which he won, and ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.’ The actor will next be seen in Adam McKay’s ‘Don’t Look Up,’ which opens in theaters on December 10th.

    PRODUCTION NEWS:

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3

Production on Marvel’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3‘ began this week, with director James Gunn announcing it on Twitter. Posting a photo of the cast assembling on set, the director said, “It’s been a strange and long and at times challenging journey to get here, but the obstacles along the way have only made this moment more blissful. Back on set with my Guardians family for the first day of shooting.”

Gunn also took the moment to reveal that he has cast ‘Peacemaker’ actor Chukwudi Iwuji in Guardians 3. “Chuk has indeed joined the cast,” the director confirmed. “After working with him on ‘Peacemaker’ I wasn’t about to let go of one of the best actors I’ve ever worked with. So, I gave him the role most every big-name actor in Hollywood wanted.”

    BLACK ADAM

While promoting the upcoming ‘Red Notice’ last week, Comicbook.com had a chance to speak with President of Production at Seven Bucks Productions Hiram Garcia about the upcoming DC film, ‘Black Adam.’ The producer talked about the recent ‘Black Adam’ presentation at DC Fandome, and why it was so important to him and Dwayne Johnson to have an opportunity to show the fans what they plan to do with the upcoming film.

“It was really important for us to set the table and make sure that all the fans knew that we weren’t messing around, and that we weren’t making a soft ‘Black Adam.’ It was important for us to show that the first guy who approaches him is no longer on the planet. I think that sets the tone that this isn’t a broad movie, this isn’t Shazam!, or anything like that. We take it very serious. The edge that Black Adam has, if you are a threat, there’s probably not a chance you’re going to get to breathe another breath around this guy. And I think that, that was really important for us to just make a statement and make sure everyone understood. Look, we know what you guys want. We know what this character is supposed to be. We’re going to do our best to make sure that we honor that and turn him into a monster.”

    JOHN WICK 4

Production recently wrapped on ‘John Wick 4,’ and thanks to a photo Tweeted by actor Shamier Anderson (Stowaway), we may finally know the full title of the upcoming film in the Keanu Reeves franchise. While the actor posted several photos from the shoot, one of the pictures is of a drawstring bag, probably a wrap gift, with the title ‘John Wick 4: Hagakure’ printed on it.

Whether ‘John Wick 4: Hagakure’ is the film’s true title or not, only time will tell. In addition to Reeves and Anderson, the film will also feature returning cast members Laurence Fishburne, Ian McShane, and Lance Reddick, as well as new cast members Donnie Yen (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), Bill Skarsgard (It), and Clancy Brown (Highlander). The film is once again directed by Chad Stahelski, and hits theaters on May 27th, 2022.

    ROGUE SQUADRON

The new Star Wars spinoff, ‘Rogue Squadron,’ from Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins has been delayed. The Hollywood Reporter announced earlier this week that the film, which was scheduled to begin production early next year for a December 22, 2023 release date, will be taken off of Disney’s production schedule.

The reason given had to do with scheduling conflicts for Jenkins, who is attached to direct a Cleopatra movie for Paramount starring Gal Gadot, as well as the recently announced ‘Wonder Woman 3.’ ‘Rogue Squadron’ was scheduled to be the Star Wars franchise’s return to the big screen after 2019’s divisive ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.’

    TRAILERS:

    GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE

Lastly, this week Sony released the final trailer for their upcoming reboot/sequel, ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife.’ Directed by Jason Reitman, son of franchise creator Ivan Reitman, the film stars a new cast that features Mckenna Grace, Finn Wolfhard, Carrie Coon, and Paul Rudd, as well as returning cast members Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts, and Sigourney Weaver.

The new movie focuses on the grandchildren of the late Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis), who discover paranormal activity in their small Oklahoma town. The trailer features many references to the original series, including the Terror Dogs, Slimer, and voice-overs from both Aykroyd and Murray.

‘Ghostbusters 2020’ Director Jason Reitman Posts First Look Photo of Cast

    Sony

There may be something strange in the neighborhood — and the cast of “Ghostbusters 2020” is loving it.

Director Jason Reitman posted a first look photo of himself with Carrie Coon, Stranger Things” star Finn Wolfhard, and “Captain Marvel” actress Mckenna Grace. Also pictured is Reitman’s father, Ivan Reitman, who directed the original “Ghostbusters” movie.

In the photo, Grace holds a clapboard that reads “Rust City,” which is likely a fake production name. The movie doesn’t have an official title yet, though the studio and Reitman are referring to it as
    Ghostbusters 2020.”

The new film is a direct follow-up to the original and its sequel, and Reitman has said he plans to incorporate many visual and musical nods to those predecessors.

Not much is known about the plot of “Ghostbusters 2020,” except that it focuses on a single mom ( Coon) and her son (Wolfhard). Paul Rudd has signed on to star and Sigourney Weaver is returning as Dana Barrett. The movie also recently added two young newcomers, Celeste O’Connor and Logan Kim.

“Ghostbusters 2020” is slated to open in theaters July 10, 2020.

  • ‘Stranger Things’ Star Finn Wolfhard In Talks for ‘Ghostbusters’ Movie

‘Stranger Things’ Star Finn Wolfhard In Talks for ‘Ghostbusters’ Movie

    Netflix

Remember when the “Stranger Things “kids dressed up like “Ghostbusters” in a Halloween episode?

Finn Wolfhard, who plays Mike on the ’80s-set sci-fi show, is in talks to star in the upcoming “Ghostbusters” movie directed by Jason Reitman.

The studio would not comment on plot details, but sources told Variety that the story will focus on a single mom and her family, with Carrie Coon (“The Leftovers,” “The Sinner”) playing Wolfhard’s mom. Whether they become Ghostbusters themselves remains to be seen.

Since the sequel to is being billed as a continuation of the first two ’80s films (and not the femme-centric Paul Feig film), a woman Ghostbuster seems unlikely.

Supposedly, Reitman was reluctant to use anyone from the “Stranger Things” cast (given they’ve already done “Ghostbusters,”) but both he and the executives were “blown away” by Wolfhard’s audition.

Wolfhard recently wrapped Season 3 of “Stranger Things,” which will debut on Netflix in July. He’ll also be in “It: Chapter 2” this fall, as well as “The Goldfinch” and “The Turning.”

Coon played the leader of a cult who was also the overprotective mother of a boy accused of a double murder in the second season of “The Sinner.”

Her movie credits include “Gone Girl,” “Widows” and “Avengers: Infinity War.”

  • First Trailer for ‘The Sinner’ Season 2: Did a 13-Year-Old Poison His Parents?

In the second season of “The Sinner,” Detective Harry Ambrose (Bill Pullman) returns to his hometown in rural New York to determine whether a 13-year-old boy (Elisha Henig) killed his parents.

Much like the first season, which centered on why shy Cora (Jessica Biel) murdered a complete stranger for no apparent reason, the suspect here seemingly has no clear motive to poison his parents.

Naturally, Ambrose’s investigation turns up some deeply disturbing information. Will Season 2 offer anything as creepy as that masked tormentor of Cora’s nightmares? We can only hope!

New characters this season will be played by Carrie Coon (“The Leftovers”) and real-life husband Tracy Letts (“Divorce”). Letts plays Jack Novack, a childhood friend of Harry’s. Coon plays Vera, a local woman who proves to be a complicated, enigmatic piece to this haunting puzzle.

Season 1 only hinted at Ambrose’s own haunted past, but it’s a safe bet that, with the season set in his hometown, we’ll get more of an idea why he’s nearly as messed up as the people he arrests.

Biel’s character will not be back for Season 2, but she remains a producer.

Set your DVRs for August 1 at 10/9c on USA Network.

  • Emmys 2017: ‘The Leftovers’ Fans Livid Carrie Coon & Justin Theroux Were ‘Robbed’

Well, the good news is that “The Leftovers” got itself trending again, one month after the series finale. But this time there are no gushing tweets of love for the show and its cast. There’s only fury at the 2017 Emmy Awards for blowing off what fans consider to be one of the greatest shows of all time.

HBO shows always clean up at the Emmys — and “Westworld” leads this year’s pack with 22 nods — but “The Leftovers” got one single nomination: Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series for Ann Dowd as Patti Levin. (Her competition includes Alexis Bledel of “The Handmaid’s Tale” and Shannon Purser of “Stranger Things.” Yes, Barb got an Emmy nod.)

Carrie Coon gave an iconic performance as Nora Durst, but she got no love for “The Leftovers.” Instead, she’s nominated for Best Actress in a Limited Series or TV Movie for “Fargo.” Justin Theroux, who had the starring role of Kevin Garvey, was not nominated at all. And even though seven shows were nominated for Outstanding Drama Series, “The Leftovers” was not one of them.

    Fans. Are. Pissed.

Carrie Coon deserved all the Emmys for Nora. All of them. Here’s the list of nominations the Emmys went with instead. The show airs Sunday, September 17 on CBS.

  • ‘The Leftovers’: Is Nora’s Story True? Fans Debate Series Finale Mystery

“The Leftovers” showrunner Damon Lindelof said there are only a couple of questions he will not answer after the series finale of his HBO drama, and one is how literally we should take Nora Durst’s story.

Season 3 was all about belief, and it ended on a high note for Nora (Carrie Coon) and Kevin Garvey (Justin Theroux), who reconnected decades later when Kevin tracked Nora down “on vacation in Australia,” a vacay he had taken every year in an effort to find her.

The time jump confused the hell out of fans for much of the finale, and when Kevin showed up and pretended to barely know Nora, it looked like a “Back to the Future II” alternate timeline. But no. Kevin was pretending, to ease his way back into Nora’s life.

But was Nora pretending, too, when she told him the story of what happened to her, after she went into the machine? We saw her do her Mad Libs obituary with brother Matt, then entered the machine that was meant to take her to the place where her family Departed. We stopped watching her as the liquid started to cover her mouth.

What happened after that is the mystery we will have to let be.

Did she back out and decide not to go through with it, hiding the rest of her days in Australia, even away from her brother Matt? Or did she succeed in finding her children, as she told Kevin, seeing an alternate world where the 98 percent of the Departed were living? She said she saw that her children were happy, and she herself didn’t belong in that world, so she tracked down the inventor of the machine to send her back. But we as viewers never followed her, as we followed Kevin when he went into international assassin mode. So … what to believe?

There are major questions on either side of the story, whether she’s lying or telling the truth. Damon Lindelof refuses to say, other than to tell The Hollywood Reporter, “Well, I want to believe her. Let me just put it to you that way. I want to believe her. That’s the most honest answer I can give you.”

He added, “I definitely feel like there are going to be people out there who watch the show who don’t believe her story, and then for a lot of people, it won’t even occur to them to disbelieve it.”

Kevin Garvey believed it, to Nora’s surprise, saying, “Why wouldn’t I believe you? You’re here.” Nora ends the series by saying “I’m here.” Read more from Lindelof on that line and more, but here are some takeaways from fans, on the big Nora question:

  • ‘The Leftovers’ Finale Leaves No Possibility for Spinoff or Continuation

Whatever happens in the finale of “The Leftovers,” it will be definitive. This really is The End.

When HBO renewed “The Leftovers,” it was for a third and final season, with just two episodes left at this point: Episode 7, “The Most Powerful Man in the World (and His Identical Twin Brother)” on Sunday, May 28, and the finale, “The Book of Nora,” which airs June 4.

The show’s fans are incredibly loyal, and can’t really believe the show is ending after just three seasons — and only eight episodes in this finale season — when so many other less gripping shows go on and on. (Then again, ratings.)

The final episode, “The Book of Nora” is meant to take us back to that mind-trip of a moment from the end of the premiere, “The Book of Kevin,” when an older-looking Nora Durst (Carrie Coon) called “Sarah” denied she knew anyone named Kevin. We know Nora actually knows two of them, both named Kevin Garvey, the father and son team played by Scott Glenn and Justin Theroux.

Showrunner and co-creator Damon Lindelof — who will never leave “Lost” and its controversial finale behind him — told Variety that everything will be wrapped up in the (hopefully) satisfying finale.

“This is it; we left no dangling threads, no to be continued, no spinoff possibilities. We made pretty sure that this was going to be the last season of the show. The audience deserves as satisfying an ending as we can give them. I don’t think anyone wants to see a question mark at the end of this.”

Nora herself, Carrie Coon, teased a “truthful” finale ahead:

“I think in a show like this, you can have a really explosive, shocking ending or you can have something that feels really truthful and I think that’s what we have. I was so proud to be a part of it, and I’m a big part of it.”

“The Leftovers” airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on HBO.

  • ‘The Leftovers’ Season 2 Trailer Wants You to Believe in Miracles

The LeftoversWhere do you go if you’re looking for miracles? A town named Miracle, of course.

“The Leftovers,” and at first, it seems that things are looking up for Kevin Garvey (Justin Theroux), Nora Durst (Carrie Coon), and their family. They decide to leave Mapleton for Miracle, Texas — which experienced zero Sudden Departures.

“What are you looking for?” asks new neighbor John Murphy (Kevin Carroll).

    “A fresh start,” Kevin answers.

    Watch the trailer.

But the fresh start begins to sour when the daughter of John and wife Erika (Regina King) goes missing. Was there foul play? Did she run away? Or could this be another departure?

Judging from the trailer, season 2 seems to have a different tone than the often-depressing first season. There is still conflict and tension, but also moments of light and even some smiles!

As we learned from TCA last week, the Guilty Remnant won’t be as big of a part of the storyline, though Ann Dowd’s supposedly-dead leader, Patti, is seen in the trailer. Is she a ghost? Not really dead? Also, there are glimpses of Amy Brenneman as Kevin’s ex, Laurie; Liv Tyler as acolyte Megan; and Chris Zylka as Kevin’s son, Tommy, who appears to join the Guilty Remnant.

“The Leftovers” season 2 premieres Sunday, Oct. 4 on HBO.
