‘FUBAR’ Season 2 receives 7 out of 10 stars.

Released on Netflix on June 12th, ‘FUBAR’ Season 2 gets us back in action with Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Luke Brunner for another blend of spy thrills and comedy.

The cast also includes Monica Barbaro (‘A Complete Unknown’), Fortune Feimster (‘Barb & Star go to Vista Del Mar’), Travis Van Winkle (‘Road House’), Jay Baruchel (‘BlackBerry’), Scott Thompson (‘Kids in the Hall: Brain Candy’) and, new this season, Carrie-Anne Moss (‘The Matrix’) and Guy Burnet (‘Oppenheimer’).

If you’re craving some Arnold Schwarzenegger action, but don’t want to dive into some of the dodgier straight-to-home-entertainment movies he’s made of late, the return of ‘FUBAR’ might satisfy you.

We says “might,” as this is very much a Your Mileage May Vary series –– if your tolerance for Schwarzenegger taking stabs at being funny and a narrative that puts laughs over stunts (though there are still some impressive moments) –– isn’t all that high, then this might not be the show for you.

    Script and Direction

‘FUBAR’ was created and is run by Nick Santora, who has had a hand in shows such as network procedural offering ‘Scorpion’ and Prime Video’s ‘Reacher.’ He certainly knows a thing or two about how to make funny live alongside spy material or vigilante action, but with ‘FUBAR,’ he’s created a delivery system for two things: Schwarzenegger channeling his past career and workplace comedy that just happens to feature big threats as part of its DNA.

For the most part, the scripts walk the line between the two on an effective level, helped by the cast. The show is never going to be the funniest or most action-packed out there, but if you’ve enjoyed its charms in the past, Season 2 certainly keeps up the same quality level.

Shoving the characters together in a safe house for a couple of episodes gives plenty of material for them clashing comically with each other, and several finding creative ways to get out and pursue their interests (see Monica Barbaro’s Emma dominating local paintball tournaments) is good for chuckle.

Once the major plot kicks back in again, the show returns to what worked about the first season, and for the most part it’s entertaining.

On the directorial front, the limitations of even a Netflix budget (and we’re certainly not talking money on the level of, say, ‘Stranger Things’ here), do sometimes shine through, but directors Phil Abraham and Jeff T. Thomas make the most of what they have.

    Cast and Performances

Let’s be honest here: Arnie is Arnie. He’s a movie star whose best days are perhaps behind him, but he certainly throws himself into all aspects of the series. He’s not afraid to make fun of himself and his back catalogue and while he can’t quite do everything he once did on the stunt front, he’s convincing enough with the help of a team.

It’s also clear he’s having fun here, chomping on cigars, getting to interact with the rest of the cast and generally nodding towards past glories.

As Emma, Monica Barbaro continues to be among the highlights, balancing a light comic tone with committed action chops. She’s equally adept playing farcical moment with the likes of Jay Baruchel as she is looking like a badass when called upon.

Fortune Feimster, Milan Carter and Travis Van Winkle are still worth watching as Luke Brenner’s support team and surrogate family Roo, Barry and Aldon, and while Milan Carter is somewhat sidelined this year, he still gets some fun moments.

Jay Baruchel, even more than Carter, comes off worse this time around –– not because of his performance, which is still giddily entertaining, but because his character, Emma’s former fiancé, simply doesn’t have as much to do any more.

Still stealing scenes every time he’s in them is Scott Thompson as Dr. Pfeffer –– he’s a delight, and fans of the first season will be happy to know his puppet obsession is undimmed.

The new recruits for this season include Carrie-Anne Moss, who clearly relishes playing Luke’s former flame and a master spy in her own right, Greta Nelso. She goes full femme fatale, and plays well off of Schwarzenegger.

Finally, there’s Guy Burnet as Theodore Chips, a James Bond riff whose character pivots between hero and villain. Burnet is excellent in the role, whether he’s trying to flirt with Emma or threatening the team.

    Final Thoughts

‘FUBAR’ certainly has niche appeal, but what it does, it does well, delivering Arnie puns, some level of spy craft and plenty of silly moments (Van Winkle and a pig are a particular highlight.

That’s it and that’s all. But hopefully this won’t be it and all for the show.

    What’s the plot of ‘FUBAR?

The initial season of the series follows Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Luke Brunner, a CIA operative with a knack for inventively taking down bad guys and a venerable reputation at the agency.

But Luke, long since realizing the toll his job and its need for total secrecy had on his family –– he’s been divorced from wife Tally (Fabiana Udenio) for nearly 20 years –– is ready to retire. He plans to win his wife back and properly reconnect with his grown children, especially Emma (Monica Barbaro).

Before he can really call it quits, though, he’s informed that Boro (Gabriel Luna), the son of a terrorist Luke dispatched years ago while working undercover, has resurfaced and is aiming to relaunch his father’s dangerous organization with even more vehemence.

Season 2 picks up with Brunner, Emma and their family, friends and colleagues going stir crazy in a safe house. But then Luke learns that not only has old flame Greta Nelso returned, but there’s a new threat out there –– and he’s the only one who can stop it.

  • ‘Die Alone’ Exclusive Interview: Carrie-Anne Moss

Opening in theaters, on digital and On Demand beginning October 18th is the new horror thriller ‘Die Alone’, which was written and directed by Lowell Dean (‘WolfCop’), and stars Carrie-Anne Moss (‘The Matrix’, ‘Memento’), Douglass Smith (‘Miss Sloane’), and Frank Grillo (‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’).

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with Carrie-Anne Moss about her work on ‘Die Alone’, her first reaction to the screenplay, similarities to ‘Memento’, her approach to her character, working with Douglass Smith, and collaborating with director Lowell Dean on set.

You can read the full interview below or click on the video player above to watch the interview.

Moviefone: To begin with, what was your first reaction to this screenplay and what intrigued you about this world that Lowell Dean had created?

Carrie-Anne Moss: I loved the script right away. I particularly loved the part of Mae, the character, and I really wanted to play her. I’m not a real zombie apocalypse, gory film watcher, but the story was what really brought me to wanting to be a part of it, the love story, and the journey of Mae. I just thought it was something I really wanted to be a part of, and then when I talked to Lowell, and he had such a clear vision. Any concerns that I slightly had, he was just like, “Yeah,” because the ending of the movie, I wasn’t sure. The ending on the page, it was really disturbing. I don’t mind disturbing things, I am not saying that, but there was intimacy and that quality. There was something in that that I just wasn’t sure as just reading it. He just assured me. He said, “You’re going to love the ending,” and he was right. I love the ending. That really surprised me, because again, I felt the love, I guess. He wanted to tell this love story, and I saw it as that as well.

MF: There is an amnesia element to ‘Die Alone’ that reminded me of ‘Memento’. Did you realize that as well when you were making this movie?

CAM: Well, I have to say that was one of the hesitations that I had with it, was that there was a couple of moments, let’s say two moments between me and him where I was like, “Oh, is this too similar?” But then when I finished it and I really looked at the larger scope of the project, it’s nothing like ‘Memento’. Even the amnesia part, it’s so different, so that was how I was able to quell that. But it deterred me in the beginning, because I don’t want to do something again. You know what I mean? That’s not something I’m looking to do. But overall, I didn’t really feel they were that similar, in the end. There’s a couple of lines where I go, “Oh.” A little bit of a nod, I guess.

MF: Without giving anything away about the plot, as an actress, how do you approach a character as complex as Mae?

CAM: Well, you rely on the writing, for sure. He wrote the character and the script very solidly, then you must play the truth and make sure you hit your moments. I mean, you must obviously do that no matter what, but it was really on the page. I just had to embody her.

MF: Can you talk about the friendship Mae forms with Ethan and what it was like working with Douglass Smith?

CAM: Oh, great. I mean, I’ve worked with him before, so we have a relationship. We know each other. We weren’t close, but we worked a lot more together than we had in the past. He’s very easy to be with. He’s such a good actor, and he’s such a pleasure to act with, very professional. He’s great. I think he does such a great job.

MF: Finally, what was it like collaborating with director Lowell Dean?

CAM: Yeah, he really opens the space to allow you to have the freedom. He hires a lot of great people, even on the crew and stuff. Everyone’s doing their thing. He has an input in all of it, but then when he calls action, he really lets you be, so I appreciated that. I like that way of working.

MF: Just to follow up, is that what you are looking for from a director when working on set?

CAM: I mean, that’s not what I’m looking for, but when it does happen, it’s really my favorite way to work. It’s just not how everybody works, but when it happens, or you have a moment of that, or maybe you’ll have little bits of that, but some people just set that tone. I’d say Christopher Nolan totally sets that tone. First time I’d ever really been in that environment was with Christopher Nolan, where he just opens it up and you get to do your thing. Lowell did the same thing.

Landing on Disney+ on June 4th with its first two episodes, ‘The Acolyte’ sees ‘Russian Doll’ co-creator and showrunner Leslye Headland given the chance to put her own stamp on that galaxy far, far away. And based on the initial episodes provided to press, has come up with something that hews more towards the nuance of ‘Andor’ than some of the recent bloated mythology powering small-screen ‘Star Wars’.

‘The Acolyte’ boasts some impressive performances from an even more diverse cast that the likes of ‘The Mandalorian’, and –– so far, at least –– is one of the better Disney+ offerings.

After the galaxy of space fantasy stories originated by George Lucas came soaring back –– this time to small screens –– under guidance of Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni with ‘The Mandalorian’, we’ve mostly been spending time in their shared world of post-‘Return of the Jedi’ adventures featuring the bounty hunter and his merchandise-motherlode companion Grogu (AKA “Baby Yoda”).

There have certainly been detours elsewhere (most notably Tony Gilroy’s darker, deeper ‘Andor’, which followed the title character (played by Diego Luna) in the years before ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’, and now, via Headland, this latest effort. Though it feels a lot like classic ‘Star Wars’ –– there are Jedis, lightsabers and droids everywhere –– the new show also has a grown-up, more nuanced approach to the story, letting you ponder the nature of good, evil and the use of the Force in its moments of stillness broken by impressive fight scenes.

    ‘The Acolyte’: Script and Direction

Leslye Headland is certainly not the first person you would expect to be handed (or want to make) a new ‘Star Wars’ series, but that definitely works in its favor. The writer/director best known for Netflix series ‘Russian Doll’ and movies such as ‘Bachelorette’ and ‘Sleeping with Other People.’ But it’s clear from this that she also brings a passion for intense, and interesting ‘Star Wars’ to the new show.

Working alongside a writing team that also includes Jason Micallef, Kor Adana, Charmaine DeGrate, Jasmyne Flournoy, Jocelyn Bioh, Claire Kiechel, Jen Richards, Eileen Shim and Cameron Squires, she has come up with a story that focuses on Amandla Stenberg’s dual role as sister Osha and Mae, one a former Jedi recruit, the other burning with revenge against the order. We won’t go too much further into the plot so as to leave the narrative spoilers intact, but the series in its early going dials down into a very personal story of pain and redemption and tackles the idea of the Jedi in a fresh new way.

Setting the story when the order is at its height and peace is seemingly prosperous in the galaxy, allows for exploring the basic concepts of ‘Star Wars’ with appealing thought and emotion. As one character says, “it’s not about good or bad. It’s about power, and who gets to utilize it.” While the idea of people feeling less than thrilled with the Jedi is something that has been touched on before, this is a more complicated story that is still easy to grasp.

Headland also directs a couple of episodes, working here with some regular collaborators including Hanelle M. Culpepper, Alex Garcia Lopez and Kogonada, and the show is a visual treat, eschewing an overuse of volume work for plenty of practical sets and location shooting that, while it doesn’t rival ‘Andor’ for tactility, is still a great watch.

Amandla Stenberg carries the emotional load of the series, playing twin sisters whose lives diverge in very different ways. They bring real depth to the characters, making for an engaging lead and guide through the story.

    Lee Jung-jae as Sol

The ‘Squid Games’ veteran is also given the chance to play a complicated character, as his Sol is a Jedi master burdened with guilt and looking for a chance to vanquish the ghosts of his past. He brings a deep well of feeling to the character and is always watchable.

    Dafne Keen as Jecki Lon

(Center to right) Jedi Padawan Jecki Lon (Dafne Keen) and Master Lakshay (Paul Bullion) in Lucasfilm’s ‘The Acolyte’, exclusively on Disney+. ©2024 Lucasfilm Ltd. & TM. All Rights Reserved.

Keen, seen in ‘Logan’ and HBO’s ‘His Dark Materials’, is a Padawan who serves alongside Sol. Keen brings her to life with charm and bright-eyed energy, and a sprit that makes her more than just a robed warrior.

    Other Notable Performances

Jedi Master Indara (Carrie-Anne Moss) in Lucasfilm’s ‘The Acolyte’, exclusively on Disney+. ©2024 Lucasfilm Ltd. & TM. All Rights Reserved.

We’d also give nods to Manny Jacinto as Qimir, a moral-free type who helps Mae on her vengeful quest and has ties to the mysterious master who has helped her hone her Force-wielding skills. ‘The Good Place’ star is always entertaining and brings goofiness tinged with darkness to the screen.

And then there is Jodie Turner-Smith, playing a role we won’t discuss at this juncture, but offers her usual presence to the role, stillness balanced with power.

Finally, Carrie-Anne Moss is one of the headliners, but so far in the series hasn’t had too much chance to make an impact beyond an initial cool fight scene.

    ‘The Acolyte’: Final Thoughts

The “anti-woke” brigade and those who whine about any differences ruining their childhood experience of ‘Star Wars’ might not love what they see, but everyone else should find something to enjoy.

‘The Acolyte’ works on different levels, at once channeling old school ‘Star Wars’ while offering new viewpoints on traditional stories. If this and ‘Andor’ are what happens when Lucasfilm ventures outside of the usual channels for their trips to that galaxy, then long may they continue to experiment.

‘The Acolyte’: receives 8.5 out of 10 stars.

    • A fifth ‘Matrix’ movie is in the works.
    • Drew Goddard, who made ‘The Cabin in the Woods’ is writing and directing.
    • There is no release date yet.

The Matrix’ is 25 years old this year, and if that makes a portion of our audience feel like they should be crumbling into dust, join the club: we’ve had dust jackets made. The three original movies (‘The Matrix’, ‘The Matrix Reloaded’ and ‘The Matrix Revolutions’) are still considered landmark genre entries.

So it’s perhaps the perfect year to announce that a new ‘Matrix’ movie is in the works, which might yet come as a surprise given the lackluster box office of 2021’s ‘The Matrix Resurrections’ (not helped by its day-and-date release on streaming service Max).

For the first time, though, neither of the Wachowskis who crafted the original trilogy (with Lana Wachowski stepping back up to make ‘Resurrections alone) are writing or directing this one.

Instead, the new movie will be created by ‘The Martian’ writer and ‘The Cabin in the Woods’ filmmaker Drew Goddard, with Lana Wachowski on board to executive produce.

Right now, to no-one’s particular surprise, the storyline is being kept a secret. All that featured in the news release about the movie is Warner Bros. Motion Pictures president of production Jesse Ehrman teasing that the story will advance the fantasy world without straying too far from what made the series a success.

Also unknown at this time? Who from the various movies’ casts (particularly veterans Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss) will return, if any.

Here’s Ehrman’s statement on the new development:

“Drew came to Warner Bros. with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world, by both honoring what Lana and Lilly began over 25 years ago and offering a unique perspective based on his own love of the series and characters. The entire team at Warner Bros. Discovery is thrilled for Drew to be making this new ‘Matrix’ film, adding his vision to the cinematic canon the Wachowskis’ spent a quarter of a century building here at the studio.”

    And Goddard also seems enthused:

“It is not hyperbole to say ‘The Matrix’ films changed both cinema and my life. Lana and Lilly’s exquisite artistry inspires me on a daily basis, and I am beyond grateful for the chance to tell stories in their world.”

Goddard, of course, also brought us ‘Bad Times at the El Royale’ and wrote memorable genre entries including ‘Cloverfield’ and ‘World War Z’.

When will the new ‘Matrix’ movie be in theaters?

Warner Bros. hasn’t said yet when it might release the new movie. Of course, it might have been good to have it ready for this year’s 25th anniversary, but that’s not happening.

    • The first teaser trailer for ‘Star Wars: The Acolyte’ has arrived.
    • This new series stars Amandla Stenberg, Lee Jung-jae and Carrie-Anne Moss.
    • ‘Star Wars: The Acolyte’ lands on Disney+ on June 4th.

Though ‘The Bad Batch’ has been keeping the ‘Star Wars’ flag flying on the small screen in animated fashion, we haven’t had a Lucasfilm/Disney+ live-action series set in that galaxy far, far away for a few months now, since ‘Ahsoka’ finished its first season in October.

If you saw the stylish, bloody poster for ‘Star Wars: The Acolyte’ that arrived yesterday, you know that we don’t have too long to wait for the next one to show up. And it certainly looks like the poster was simply a harbinger of things to come –– given what happens in the first trailer for the show, it’s definitely promising something moodier, and even more action packed than recent efforts.

And setting the story outside of the ‘Wars’ narrative we’ve all gotten so used to in movies and TV is a plus too, since it allows the creative team to go to interesting places and introduce brand new characters.

The new show is set around 100 years before the start of the Skywalker Saga (AKA ‘The Phantom Menace’), coming in at the end of a time period known as The High Republic –– a time in which the Jedi are thriving, as is the galaxy at large.

But this is ‘Star Wars’, and if we know anything, it’s that the dark side can’t be too far away! And so it proves: an investigation into a shocking crime spree pits a respected Jedi Master (Lee Jung-jae) against a dangerous warrior from his past (Amandla Stenberg). As more clues emerge, they travel down a dark path where sinister forces reveal all is not what it seems….

Who is starring in ‘Star Wars: The Acolyte’?

Alongside Lee and Stenberg, the cast includes Carrie-Anne Moss, Dafne Keen, Jodie Turner-Smith, Manny Jacinto and Charlie Barnett.

Also featured? Current Chewbacca suit-wearer Joonas Suotamo, back on Wookiee duty, but this time as hairy Jedi Kelnacca.

This series is the brainchild of Leslye Headland, who previously worked on the likes of time-twisting comedy drama ‘Russian Doll’. Here, as with that series, she runs the show and directs the first two episodes, with Kogonada, Alex Garcia Lopez and Hanelle Culpepper each handling two of the eight-episode run.

When will ‘Star Wars: The Acolyte’ be on screens?

The new ‘Star Wars’ series lands on Disney+ with its first two episodes on June 4th.

“June the 4th be with you”? Hhhm… doesn’t have the same ring as “May”, but then the month before is being devoted to a theatrical re-release for ‘The Phantom Menace’.

  • Star Wars Celebration Day 1: TV Presentation

    cChTkeu3

Fans got a look at a new trailer for ‘Ahsoka’ that is now online, while other series including ‘Skeleton Crew’ showed up with audience-only footage.

While a big panel at today’s Star Wars Celebration in London was given over to the movies that the Lucasfilm team has in the works, there was plenty of attention for the ever-expanding TV portrayal of the various Jedis, bounty hunters and more.

With Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni overseeing the ‘Mandalorian’ expanded small screen universe, the company has naturally used the success of that first show to build out others, some created by the main duo, some by different creative teams.

There were new details and looks at a variety of shows, so here’s what was talked about…

    ‘Star Wars: Ahsoka’

In production before any of the other series spotlighted today, the series following the further adventures of the Togruta from the planet Shili, a Padawan turned Jedi known as Ahsoka Tano had the most to show off, including a trailer that is now online.

Ahsoka, created 20 years ago by Dave Filoni and George Lucas for the theatrical launch of animated movie ‘Star Wars: The Clone Wars’, arrived in live-action form (played by Rosario Dawson) on ‘The Mandalorian’ and later popped up on ‘The Book of Boba Fett’.

Led by Filoni behind the scenes, the series follows the former Jedi knight Ahsoka Tano as she investigates an emerging threat to a vulnerable galaxy –– specifically Grand Admiral Thrawn, a villain created by Timothy Zahn for his novel series. He’s already in screen canon thanks to appearances on Filoni’s animated series ‘Star Wars Rebels’ and will now be live-action, though his casting as yet to be announced.

Also making the leap from ‘Rebels’ (since Ashoka also appeared on that show) are Sabine Wren (Natasha Liu Bordizzo), Hera Syndulla (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and cranky droid Chopper, with the promise of others. It’s worth noting that another Rebels regular, Garazeb “Zeb” Orrelios showed up in one scene of last week’s ‘The Mandalorian’.

“It was natural he would make the transition to live action,” Kathleen Kennedy said of Filoni on stage. “He has done a spectacular job.” Favreau concurred: “He cares deeply. He poured his heart and soul into it. Dave is unique in that he doesn’t ever squash your inspiration or idea but finds a way to fit it in, to keep it in the tradition that George Lucas started.” Dawson, for her part, said she had “so many pinch me moments” making the show. “Because if this does well, maybe we’ll get a second season. It’s up to y’all!” she told the 4,500-strong crowd.

The trailer is stacked with action, primarily Ahsoka showing off her trademark double lightsaber skills, plus plenty of starships dogfighting.

‘Ahsoka’ will launch on Disney+ this August.

    ‘Star Wars: Skeleton Crew’

Further out is ‘Skeleton Crew’, which was created and is run by recent ‘Spider-Man’ trilogy filmmaker Jon Watts alongside ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ collaborator Christopher Ford.

The pair have come up with a series set around the same time as ‘The Mandalorian’, which follows the journey of four kids who make a mysterious discovery on their seemingly safe home planet, then get lost in a strange and dangerous galaxy. Finding their way home — and meeting unlikely allies and enemies — will be a greater adventure than they ever imagined.

Jude Law stars alongside younger actors Ravi Cabot-Conyers, Kyriana Kratter and Robert Timothy Smith and Ryan Kiera Armstrong. There’s no word yet on when the show will land on Disney+.

    Star Wars: The Acolyte’

The Acolyte’ promises to take viewers into a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging dark-side powers in the final days of the High Republic era. A former Padawan reunites with her Jedi Master to investigate a series of crimes but discovers the forces they confront are more sinister than they ever anticipated.

The show stars Amandla Stenberg, Lee Jung-jae, Manny Jacinto, Dafne Keen, Charlie Barnett, Jodie Turner-Smith, Rebecca Henderson, Dean-Charles Chapman, Carrie-Anne Moss, Margarita Levieva and ‘Star Wars’ Wookiee veteran Joonas Suotamo, who plays another of the race, a Jedi named Kelnacca.

Series creator Leslye Headland wowed the crowd with a sneak peek at the upcoming show. Headland arrived on stage, escorted by Kelnacca, and previewed footage from the mystery-thriller series alongside several of the stars.

With production underway now, the series won’t hit Disney+ until next year, but that still is likely to be ahead of the new run of another big series set in the ‘Star Wars’ galaxy…

    ‘Star Wars: Andor’

There was also word from Team ‘Andor,’ with showrunner Tony Gilroy joined by stars Diego Luna, Adria Arjona, Kyle Soller, Denise Gough, Genevieve O’Reilly, Andy Serkis, Muhannad Bahair and Joplin Sibtain to talk about the successful first season and preview footage from the second and final run of 12 episodes, which have yet to schedule a release date on Disney+.

Oh, and for fans of the show that started it all, there was naturally a ‘Mandalorian’ treat, as the next episode of the series was shown on the big screen for fans.

There is a lot to look forward to on the TV front, and, unlike the big movie announcements, we can be reasonably assured they will all hit screens. Stay tuned for more from the event as it unfolds.

  • Casting News for ‘Blade,’ Scorsese’s Grateful Dead biopic

If you were following social media last week, you might think the only movie news was the new ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ trailer, but there was so much more than that. We saw casting announcements for the MCU’s ‘Blade’ starring Mahershala Ali, as well as director Martin Scorsese’s Grateful Dead biopic.

We also saw production updates on ‘Lethal Weapon 5’ and the announcement of its new director, and ‘Trolls 3,’ which now has a release date. As well as the release of eight new character posters for the upcoming sequel, ‘The Matrix Resurrections.’

If you missed anything, Moviefone has you covered!

    CASTING NEWS:

    BLADE

    Blade

It was reported that Disney has confirmed acclaimed actor Delroy Lindo is joining the cast of their upcoming reboot of ‘Blade,’ which will star two-time Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali in the title role. Lindo, who received rave reviews for his performance in last year’s ‘Da Five Bloods,’ is the first actor since Ali to be confirmed to appear in the movie, although his role is still being kept under wraps.

Of course, that didn’t stop the internet from guessing who the actor might play, which ranged from a villain to Blade’s mentor and friend, Whistler. Blade is set to be directed by Bassam Tariq (‘Mogul Mowgli’), from a screenplay by Stacy Osei-Kuffour (‘Watchmen’). Lindo can currently be seen in ‘The Harder They Fall,’ and is best known for his roles in ‘Malcolm X,’ ‘Get Shorty,’ ‘The Cider House Rules,’ and ‘Gone in 60 Seconds.’

    GRATEFUL DEAD BIOPIC

There was great news for Deadheads as Deadline announced exclusively that legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese will direct a Grateful Dead biopic for Apple and that Jonah Hill has been cast as the band’s iconic frontman, Jerry Garcia. The film will be produced by Scorsese and Hill, as well as the remaining members of the band, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Mikey Hart, and Bill Kreutzmann.

The screenplay will be written by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, who are no strangers to biopics after penning ‘The People vs. Larry Flynt,’ ‘Man on the Moon’ about comedian Andy Kaufman, and the award-winning TV series ‘American Crime Story: The People vs. O.J. Simpson.’ Scorsese is also no stranger to the Grateful Dead, having directed the 2017 documentary series about the band for Amazon Prime called ‘Long Strange Trip.’ The project marks the first time Scorsese and Hill have worked together since 2013’s ‘The Wolf of Wall Street,’ which earned Hill an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

    PRODUCTION NEWS:

    LETHAL WEAPON 5

Variety confirmed that Academy Award-winning director Mel Gibson will take over for the late great Richard Donner and helm ‘Lethal Weapon 5,’ the latest installment of the popular action franchise. The movie, which will be written by Richard Wenk (‘The Equalizer’), was developed to be Donner’s final film before his death on July 5th. His widow, Lauren Shuler Donner (‘X-Men’) will produce.

Speaking at an event in London last week, according to The Sun, Gibson talked about taking over directing duties from Donner. “He was developing the screenplay, and he got pretty far along with it,” Gibson said. “And he said to me one day, ‘Listen kid, if I kick the bucket, you will do it.’ He did indeed pass away, but he did ask me to do it, and, at the time, I didn’t say anything. He said it to his wife, to the studio and the producer. So, I will be directing the fifth one,” Gibson confirmed.

‘Lethal Weapon’ was released in 1987 and has spawned three other sequels including ‘Lethal Weapon 2,’ ‘Lethal Weapon 3,’ and ‘Lethal Weapon 4,’ as well as a TV series that ran from 2016-2019. It is assumed that Gibson will also reprise his iconic role of Martin Riggs, but it is still unknown if Danny Glover, Joe Pesci and Rene Russo will return to their franchise roles.

    TROLLS 3

It was reported in Deadline that Universal has set a release date for DreamWorks Animation’s ‘Troll 3’ for November 17th, 2023. However, unlike 2020’s ‘Trolls World Tour,’ the film will be release exclusively in theaters for 17 days before going to PVOD.

‘Trolls’ premiered in 2016 and went on to earn almost $350 million at the box office and earned an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song for ‘Can’t Stop the Feeling,’ performed by Justin Timberlake. No word yet if franchise stars Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick will return.

    PHOTOS AND POSTERS:

    SCREAM

Bloody Disgusting released a new photo from ‘Scream,’ which is the fifth installment of the popular horror franchise. Set to hit theaters on January 14th, 2022, the photo features David Arquette reprising his role as Dewey Ridley alongside new cast member Melissa Barrera. The film is said to take place twenty-five years after the original, and features a new killer wearing the Ghostface mask.

The new film is once again executive produced by Kevin Williamson, from a script written by James Vanderbilt (‘The Amazing Spider-Man’) and Guy Busick (‘Castle Rock’) and directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (‘Ready or Not’). In addition to Arquette and Barrera, the film also stars Jack Quaid (‘The Boys’), Jenna Ortega (‘You’), Dylan Minnette (‘Goosbumps’), and Mason Gooding (‘In the Heights’), as well as returning cast members Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, and https://www.moviefone.com/celebrity/marley-shelton/1829816/main/.

    THE MATRIX RESURRECTIONS

With the forth ‘Matrix’ film coming to theaters next month, Warner Bros. has dropped on Twitter eight new character posters from ‘The Matrix Resurrections’. The posters feature the return of Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss as Neo and Trinity, respectively, as well as Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Candyman) as Morpheus and Jessica Henwick (Iron Fist) as Bugs. Neil Patrick Harris, Jonathan Groff, Eréndira Ibarra and Priyanka Chopra Jonas’s mysterious characters also received character posters.

‘The Matrix’ was released in 1999, followed by two sequels, including 2003’s ‘The Matrix Reloaded’ and ‘The Matrix Revolutions.’ Directed by Lana Wachowski, ‘The Matrix Resurrections’ will hit theaters on December 22nd, and also stars Jada Pinkett Smith, Lambert Wilson, and Christina Ricci.

  • ‘Matrix 4’ Officially Happening, with Keanu Reeves, Carrie Anne Moss and Lana Wachowski Returning

‘Matrix 4’ Officially Happening, with Keanu Reeves, Carrie Anne Moss and Lana Wachowski Returning

    Warner Bros.

    There is no spoon.

There’s also no stopping the “Matrix” franchise, which seemed to (pretty definitively) wrap up with 2003’s weirdly underrated “The Matrix Revolutions.” Warner Bros announced today (via Variety) that Keanu Reeves and Carrie Ann-Moss would return to the digital landscape once again, in a fourth film directed by Lana Wachowski, one half of the Wachowski directing team that spearheaded the first three films. (Lana’s sister, Lilly Wachowski, has a forthcoming Showtime series called “Work in Progress.”)

Interestingly, the new script will be written by Wachowski, Aleksander Hemon (an author who appeared on the Wachowskis’ Netflix series “Sense8”) and David Mitchell, the celebrated British novelist (the Wachowskis adapted his novel “Cloud Atlas” and he, in turn, worked on “Sense8” – at one point he was pegged to write all of season 3 before it was abandoned). Also interesting: Neo and Trinity died in the last movie.

“We could not be more excited to be re-entering the Matrix with Lana,” said Warner Bros. Picture Group chairman Toby Emmerich in an official statement. “Lana is a true visionary — a singular and original creative filmmaker — and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in ‘The Matrix’ universe.”

For her part, Lana said: “Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now. I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends.”

Work on the sequel is said to begin in early 2020. We cannot wait.

  • 15 Things You Never Knew About ‘The Matrix’ on its 20th Anniversary

15 Things You Never Knew About ‘The Matrix’ on its 20th Anniversary

    Warner Bros.

Considering how much it changed the face of blockbuster movies and the science fiction genre, it’s bizarre to think “The Matrix” is turning 20 years old. Time to down the red pill and learn some interesting facts about the making of this modern classic.

    1. The Wachowskis originally approached Will Smith in 1996 to star as Neo. Smith has since admitted he turned down the role because he didn’t understand the script and opted to star in “Wild Wild West” instead.

    2. In addition to Smith, the Wachowskis also approached Val Kilmer to play Morpheus.

    Warner Bros.

    3. The principal cast and crew members were required to read several philosophy books before seeing the screenplay, including Jean Baudrillard’s “Simulacra and Simulation.” That book can be seen on display in Thomas Anderson’s apartment early in the film.

    4. “The Matrix” wasn’t officially greenlit by WB until well into pre-production. It was only after hiring artists Steve Skroce and comic book legend Geoff Darrow to storyboard the film and visualize the mind-bending action scenes that executives signed off on the project.

    5. There’s a reason Neo’s fighting style in the first movie features far fewer kicking moves than in the sequels. Keanu Reeves was recovering from neck surgery during pre-production and didn’t have full use of his legs.

    6. Both Hugo Weaving and Carrie-Anne Moss were injured during filming. Moss refused to tell anyone about her ankle injury for fear of losing the role.

    Warner Bros.

    7. The scenes where Neo first wakes up from his captivity in The Matrix were filmed last, as Reeves had to loose approximately 15 pounds and shave his head to achieve the necessary emaciated look for his character.

    8. Neo’s criminal record folder lists his birthplace as being “Capital City, USA.” While never overtly revealed in the films, the world simulated within the Matrix consists of a single, giant metropolis called Mega City.

    Warner Bros.

    9. Switch actress Belinda McCrory revealed that her character was originally intended to be played by a male actor in the real world and a female actress in the Matrix. This is one reason why the film has come to be viewed as an allegory for transgender identity.

    10. Even Neo might have been a woman had things worked out differently. Reeves’ “Speed” costar Sandra Bullock was approached to star in the film early on.

    Fox

    11. The Wachowskis cast numerous sets of twins as background extras for the “Woman in Red” sequence, as a subtle way of showing a computer program using recycled information.

    12. “The Matrix” is often compared to 1998’s “Dark City” in both story and visual style. As it turns out, many sets from “Dark City” were recycled for use in “The Matrix.”

    13. The main character in the DC Comics series “The Sandman” is also named Morpheus. The Wachowskis specifically instructed Laurence Fishburne to model his performance on that wise, inscrutable Morpheus.

    DC

    14. This is the only film in the series where Neo uses guns.

    15. “The Matrix” takes place over the course of 19 months. This is indicated by the timestamps of the phone traces seen in the beginning and end of the movie.
