    ‘Carmen Sandiego’ Gets Schooled in Criminal Life in Netflix’s First Trailer

    Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego? On Netflix, of course.

    The globe-trotting international thief and criminal mastermind who first appeared in a series of educational video games in the mid-’80s is the protagonist of her very own Netflix animated series.

    The reboot explores the origin story of Carmen (voiced by “Jane the Virgin” star Jane Rodriguez), with the trailer providing glimpses of the school where she hones her thieving ways as an agent of V.I.L.E.

    But Carmen has a change of heart and decides to turn over a new leaf. She becomes a thief who only steals from other thieves, joined by best pal and sidekick Player (Finn Wolfhard of “Stranger Things”).

    Carmen has appeared in television shows before, like the animated series “Where on Earth Is Carmen Sandiego?” which ran for four seasons until 1999. There was also the PBS game show “Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego?,” which ran in reruns through the ’90s.

    And Netflix is developing a live-action Carmen Sandiego movie, also starring Gina Rodriguez.

    New ‘Carmen Sandiego’ Sets January Bow on Netflix

    We might not be able to answer where in the world is Carmen Sandiego, but we can say when Carmen Sandiego will be. Netflix announced today via Twitter that “Carmen Sandiego” will debut on January 18th, 2019. Start studying your geography now.

    Unlike the earlier iterations of the character, “Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?,” which aired on public television from 1991 to 1995 on public television, and “Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego?,” which aired on public television from 1996 to 1997, this will not be a live action gameshow but a fully animated endeavor. That makes it closer to the fully animated Fox Saturday morning television show “Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego?,” which ran from 1994 to 1999. (All of the series were based on a 1985 educational videogame that inspired a number of sequels, including one set in outer space.)

    This new show will serve as something of an origin story for the character (voiced here by Gina Rodriguez), an international thief and raconteur, as well as her sidekick Player (voiced by Finn Wolfhard). According to the official release, “We will follow her escapades and get to determine not only where but WHO in the world is Carmen Sandiego?” Intriguing!

    Hopefully the new series will utilize the same charming combination of education and entertainment that the original series did, since nobody minds learning stuff when it’s this fun.
