    • Chris Evans has been confirmed as returning to the MCU.
    • He shows up in the first teaser for ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’
    • The footage was shown before ‘Avatar: Fire & Ash.’

While the man himself has been cagey in the past as to whether his time with the Marvel Cinematic Universe is done,  there were reports back in December of last year that pointed to more MCU time for Chris Evans as Steve “Captain America” Rogers.

And now, in the first teaser for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ that showed attached to ‘Avatar: Fire & Ash,’ Rogers is seen (see more on the brief footage below), pointing to him playing a role in the next movie (and possibly ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’).

How much of a role remains to be seen, but the Disney promotional machine rolling him out like this does hint at Cap playing an important part.

If you haven’t taken yourself out to one of the initial showings of James Cameron’s latest ‘Avatar’ movie, and you really want to know what’s included in the ‘Doomsday’ footage, read on…

The teaser shows Steve riding home on a motorbike, wearing a helmet reminiscent of his time as Captain America. He’s then seen handling his old uniform and cradling what is presumably his and Peggy Carter’s (Hayley Atwell) newborn child.

This first tease ends with “Steve Rogers will return for ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’ ” A countdown timer begins at the end that’s set to expire a year from now when ‘Doomsday’ hits theaters.

    • Chris Evans is reportedly heading back to the Marvel family for ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’
    • Joe and Anthony Russo are aboard to direct the movie.
    • Robert Downey Jr. will be playing Dr. Doom.

With the giant announcement back at Comic-Con this past July that Robert Downey Jr. would be returning to the sprawling Marvel Cinematic Universe –– but as Doctor Doom, rather than a variant of the late Tony “Iron Man” Stark –– talk has naturally turned to his fellow veteran Marvel actors and whether they’ll be back alongside the newer crop.

It seems one of the other main players has made the choice to come back, as The Wrap reports that Chris Evans is now deep in talks to return for the first of the two new ‘Avengers’ movies that the studio has planned –– ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ –– which will see the heroes going up against Doom.

    aulDnGXPFkuVgP2q8dOyT6

What the story doesn’t specify is whether Evans will be back as Steve Rogers, AKA Captain America, who, let’s not forget was last seen as an old man at the end of ‘Avengers: Endgame’ after he opted to spend a different timeline’s life with Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell).

Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson took over the Cap mantle, and he’ll be seen in ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ this coming February.

So Evans could well be playing someone else, as he did when he reprised his old Fox Marvel role as Johnny Storm in this summer’s ‘Deadpool & Wolverine.’

But at the very least, it’s exciting news.

What has happened with the new ‘Avengers’ movies so far?

    'Avengers: Doomsday'.
    ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. © 2024 20th Century Studios / © and ™ 2024 MARVEL.

To say the road to the new ‘Avengers’ films has been problematic is to say an erupting volcano is a little toasty.

Originally announced as part of a big reveal by studio boss Kevin Feige at the 2022 San Diego Comic-Con about future “phase” developments, the new movies were called ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty’ and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’.

‘The Kang Dynasty’ has been the real sticking point here. Though the plan had presumably been to build to a confrontation with Jonathan Majors’ multiversal villain, Majors found himself cut by Marvel after accusations (and, later a guilty result) of harassment.

While ‘Shang-Chi’ director Destin Daniel Cretton boarded the film shortly after it was announced, he’s since stepped away. ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’s Shawn Levy has reportedly offered been the gig since then, but the July Con announcement also confirmed that ‘Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame’ directors Joe and Anthony Russo are back to handle the two giant team-up efforts.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ will focus on the likes of the current Avengers team and the Fantastic Four (played by Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn and Ebon Moss-Bacharach, and set to be introduced in their own movie next July) having to face the new threat of Doom.

‘Secret Wars’ has been more of a mystery on the filmmaking front.

    What is Marvel’s ‘Secret Wars?

    'Avengers: Secret Wars'.
    ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’. © 2024 20th Century Studios / © and ™ 2024 MARVEL.

‘Secret Wars’ would draw from (through the usual Marvel movie filter where changes will be made) a pair of 1980s comic book series focused on an all-powerful antagonist known as the Beyonder, who in the first installment pitted Marvel’s heroes and villains against each other on a planet known as Battleworld.

In a 2015 revival by Jonathan Hickman, the resulting conflict left the multiverse collapsed, the survivors living on a single planet ruled by classic villain Doctor Doom.

The Russos have previously talked about their enthusiasm for ‘Secret Wars’, and they’re bringing along scripter Stephen McFeely, who co-wrote most of their previous Marvel output.

Who else will be in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’?

Alongside Evans in whatever capacity, we’ll of course see Downey plus the ‘Fantastic Four’ cast.

Mackie is very likely to show up as Cap, and Benedict Cumberbatch has been talked about to return as Doctor Strange. We’ll have to wait and see whether the likes of Tom Holland’s Peter Parker/Spider-Man or any of the other stalwarts will be back.

There’s good money on Chris Hemsworth as Thor (since he’s still active) and hopefully the likes of Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi and Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes will report for duty.

There has also been Netflix pill-slinging film ‘Pain Hustlers,’ Apple action movie ‘Ghosted,’ and he reunited with the Russos to play a scheming villain in thriller ‘The Gray Man.’

More recently, there was the aforementioned ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ and Christmas-themed movie ‘Red One’ opposite Dwayne Johnson.

  • Liv Tyler Joins ‘Captain America: New World Order’

Liv Tyler in director Bryan Bertino's 'The Strangers.'
Liv Tyler in director Bryan Bertino’s ‘The Strangers.’

Given that we already know that ‘Captain America: New World Order’ will have some connections to ‘The Incredible Hulk’ –– most notably “Thunderbolt” Ross (now played by Harrison Ford following William Hurt’s death) and Samuel Sterns, AKA The Leader, played by Tim Blake Nelson, whose villainous future was only hinted at in the 2008 movie, we suppose it was only a matter of time before Betty Ross returned.

And so she has, with Liv Tyler joining ‘New World Order’ as the character who in her first appearance (and often in the comics) was the great love of Bruce Banner (though there’s no word yet on whether Mark Ruffalo will show up as Bruce).

The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Tyler is returning, which of course will make for a more emotional storyline for Ford’s first appearance as Ross (who at this point has become President of the United States).

And while a tricky rights issue means Marvel can’t make a solo Hulk movie, that hasn’t stopped them placing Betty in at least one other project –– she was seen (albeit briefly) in an episode of animated series ‘What If…?’, though there the character was voiced by Stephanie Panisello.

What’s the story of ‘Captain America: New World Order’?

It remains to be seen how all these Hulk hangovers affect the plot of ‘New World Order’, but the focus will be on Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) who was chosen to carry on as the new Captain America by Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers at the end of ‘Avengers: Endgame’.

Sam spent the duration of the Disney+ ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ debating whether he should take on the mantle but embraced the role towards the end. Now he’ll be facing fresh threats as the new Cap makes his big screen debut.

Who else is in the new movie?

While we’ve yet to learn whether The Winter Soldier –– AKA Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes ––will return for the film, Danny Ramirez’ Joaquin Torres, the US Air Force lieutenant and intelligence officer to whom Sam passed the Falcon mantle (and wing suit) once he became Captain America, is back.

And Isaiah Bradley (Carl Lumbly) a former super soldier who was ill-treated by the American government will also appear.

New to the cast are Shira Haas, playing comic book character Sabra and Xosha Roquemore in an unknown role.

Behind the scenes, ‘The Cloverfield Paradox’s Julius Onah is calling the shots on the movie, which has is now in production. He’s working from a script by ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’s Malcolm Spellman and Dalan Musson.

Whether this all means that we can expect to see more of Betty in future MCU entries remains to be seen, but it’s good to have her back.

As Marvel moves on through its next phases, the shape of a potential Avengers team is beginning to become clearer.

We’ve known for a while that Anthony Mackie’s Sam “Falcon” Wilson will be back on the big screen, this time in the guise of Captain America. And the movie has found its director for ‘Captain America 4‘ in Julius Onah, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The handover, of course, first occurred at the end of ‘Avengers Endgame’, where Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers arrived back from his trip to return the Infinity Stones to their rightful place in time, having decided to live a full life instead of using the quantum time-jumping system.

An elderly Steve hands a version of his iconic shield off to Sam, who is unsure whether he’s worthy. Asked how it feels, he replies, “Like it’s someone else’s”. “It isn’t,” says Rogers.

Yet it would take a lot more wrangling for Sam to finally feel ready to wield the shield and assume the mantle of Cap, an internal – and external – debate chronicled in Marvel’s Disney+ series ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’.

That show saw Sam and Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) dealing with a variety of threats (including an out of control US Agent, played by Wyatt Russell, who was initially crowned Cap’s replacement by the American government) but ultimately ended with Sam suiting up as the new Captain America.

Winter Soldier/Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) and Falcon/Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) in Marvel Studios' 'The Falcon and the Winter Soldier' exclusively on Disney+.

And the connective tissue between the show and the new movie doesn’t end there, as Malcolm Spellman, head writer for the series, is at work on the film’s script alongside Dalan Musson, who was on his writing staff.

Onah, born in Nigeria, but a world traveller thanks to his diplomat father, made waves with impressive shorts produced while at NYU, and his film school thesis attracted Spike Lee as an executive producer.

After J.J. Abrams saw his short film work, he hired Onah to direct ‘The Cloverfield Paradox’, the second spin-off set in the ‘Cloverfield’ universe.

Though the movie itself didn’t exactly soar – Paramount sold it off to Netflix – and the reviews weren’t great, but Onah has since made more well-received movies including 2015’s ‘The Girl is in Trouble’ and 2019’s ‘Luce’.

The latter movie premiered to acclaim at that year’s Sundance Film Festival and was nominated for several awards. That, combined with his experience handling effects, no doubt contributed to Marvel’s hiring him.

Marvel Studios (and boss Kevin Feige) have a history of hiring filmmakers who have largely worked in indie movies, finding success with the likes of the Russo brothers, who have handled the last few ‘Captain America’ movies and the two gigantic ‘Avengers’ films, ‘Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame’.

Onah stepping aboard means the movie is moving forward, so we’ll be interested to see who joins the cast. Evans seems unlikely, since he’s said he’s not looking to return, but we figure Stan will show up as Bucky.

As of yet, the movie doesn’t have an announced release date.

  • Chris Evans Joins Dwayne Johnson in ‘Red One’

Chris Evans in 'Defending Jacob' on Apple TV+.
Chris Evans in ‘Defending Jacob’ on Apple TV+.

A movie starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson sounds like a Christmas gift. But to learn that the former cinematic Captain America himself, Chris Evans has joined forces with him, that’ll have you wondering if we all somehow got on the Nice List.

Yet it’s true: Evans, who played Steve Rogers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is on board for a holiday-themed action-adventure comedy called ‘Red One’.

Exact details of what the movie will be about are being stashed in Santa’s sack for now, but we wouldn’t be surprised, given its “holiday” tag, to see Johnson either playing some version of Santa Claus, or helping him out in some way. We can see the poster now… “This Year, Christmas Rocks!”

The idea sprang from the brain of Hiram Garcia, who is Johnson’s producing partner in his Seven Bucks production company. But the person bringing the script to life has also worked with Johnson in the past – Chris Morgan, who wrote many of the ‘Fast & Furious’ movies, including its 2019 spin-off, ‘Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw.’

(L to R) Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham in 'Hobbs & Shaw.'
(L to R) Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham in ‘Hobbs & Shaw.’

And continuing the theme of past Rock collaborators is director Jake Kasdan, who worked on the ‘Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle’ and ‘Jumanji: The Next Level’, both of which featured Johnson and became big box office hits. All involved are clearly hoping for success with this one, and perhaps the birth of a new franchise, as with Johnson’s recent Netflix movie “Red Notice” (2020), which is already spawning not one, but two sequels.

Christmas movies don’t typically tend to feature lots of action, so it’ll be interesting to see how Johnson adapts his usual brand to the holiday season.

Aside from his Disney/Marvel work, Evans is known for appearing in the comic book company’s two Fox ‘Fantastic Four’ films and, also in the graphic novel vein, the cult movie 2010’s ‘Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World’.

Next up for the actor is voicing ‘Lightyear’ from Pixar, which will feature the “human” version of ‘Toy Story’s Buzz Lightyear, the inspiration for the astronaut toy. He’ll also be seen in ‘The Gray Man’, a Netflix action thriller that co-stars Ryan Gosling and reunites Evans with regular MCU directors Joe Russo and Anthony Russo.

    Chris Evans in Pixar's 'Lightyear.'
    Chris Evans in Pixar’s ‘Lightyear.’

Johnson’s schedule is also typically packed, with two films headed to screens this summer. First is the animated ‘DC League of Super-Pets’, in which the canine companion of Superman and a group of shelter animals who unexpectedly develop powers must save the Justice League from the clutches of villain Lex Luthor. That movie finds him working once again (albeit in a voice booth) with old friend Kevin Hart and is in cinemas on May 20.

Then, staying with the DC Universe, Johnson is starring in ‘Black Adam’, a powerful anti-hero with abilities like Superman but a commitment to justice by any means that brings him into conflict with other characters. It’ll arrive on July 29.

As for ‘Red One’, Amazon jumped to acquire the rights to make the movie, and while it doesn’t have a specific release date yet, it should be on screens around Christmas 2023.

    Marvel

“Avengers 4” will feature a blast from Captain America’s past.

Next year’s sequel to “Avengers: Infinity War” will feature the surprising feature of Crossbones aka Brock Rumlow, played by Frank Grillo.

Grillo himself confirmed on the UFC Unfiltered podcast that he’ll appear in “Avengers 4.”

“[Crossbones] makes an appearance in the next ‘Avengers’ movie, but it’s a flashback,” he teased.

“And I’m allowed to say whatever I want because I’m never doing another Marvel movie … because I’m 117 years old.”

Crossbones was an antagonist in “Captain America: Winter Soldier” and “Captain America: Civil War.” Rumlow initially posed as a S.H.I.E.L.D. operative, but was actually working for the nefarious HYDRA. After his body was burned in “Winter Soldier,” he wore mask.

At the beginning of “Civil War,” he tried to kill himself and Captain America in an explosion, which Scarlet Witch was able to contain but ended up taking out Crossbones.

Grillo is certainly not afraid of revealing spoilers or rumors about the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  Earlier this week, he told Larry King that the next “Captain America could be African American. It could be a woman.”

Chris Evans is trying to backtrack from his potential Ruffalo.

It had already been reported that Evans planned to hang up his shield as Captain America/Steve Rogers after “Avengers 4.” Evans gave fuel to that fire on October 4 when he tweeted about wrapping “Avengers 4,” adding some poignant notes about playing the character for the past eight years.

It read like a goodbye. It read to many like a goodbye where Captain America probably dies. Fans were in tears. It got heavy.

    Avengers: Infinity War
    Marvel Studios

Evans was put on the spot during an appearance at ACE Comic Con in Chicago. He addressed the tweet and the intense emotional response it evoked (via Comicbook):

“I should clarify that I know I did tweet something that made a lot of people think that it was in someway a spoiler. I should clarify that regardless of how ‘Avengers 4’ ends, I would have tweeted the exact same thing. That last day of filming was a very emotional day and it was the culmination of almost 10 years of filming and 22 movies, this unbelievable tapestry.

You feel a lot more emotions than I think even I thought I’d feel. And I felt it was appropriate to share the gratitude. I know it had a ripple effect but I am neither confirming or denying anything.”

    Uh huh. OK.

Also at the Comic Con event, Evans was asked what it was like for his Steve Rogers to watch his childhood BFF Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) die two times — including Bucky’s dust-busting at the end of “Avengers: Infinty War.” Evans’ answer suggested some serious Stucky feels ahead:

“I think that’s one of the more precious relationships for Steve Rogers, you know. It’s one of the few relationships that’s been able to transfer into modern day. It’s one of the few relationships that he can identify as anything we would call home. I don’t know how far I can go into that response. Yeah, I’m going to have to maybe leave it there.”

Oh if you leave it there the fans will pick it up and run with it. But that’s fun too.

Bucky is “home.” That’s love. Is it also a hint to the “sacrifices” ahead?

“Avengers 4” has officially wrapped reshoots filming for everyone, not just Chris Evans. The film is scheduled to open May 3, 2019. We’re on standby to get the official title and some kind of teaser/trailer/official photos.

Chris Evans is hanging up the shield as Captain America.

The star seemed to officially confirm he is leaving the role, now that he has wrapped filming on “Avengers 4,” the follow-up to “Infinity War.” On Twitter, he wrote, “It was an emotional day to say the least. Playing this role over the last 8 years has been an honor.”

He added that he was “eternally grateful” for the opportunity to play the Marvel superhero.

    https://twitter.com/ChrisEvans/status/1047896966410190849

The 37-year-old actor has been hinting in recent years that his time as Steve Rogers was drawing to a close. “Avengers 4” has been described by Marvel as the end of an era, the final chapter of the 20-film, decade-long saga started by “Iron Man.”

Evans was introduced in the role in 2011’s “Captain America” and appeared as the clean-cut hero in “The Avengers” (2012), “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” (2014), “Avengers: Age of Ultron” (2015), “Captain America: Civil War” (2016), and this year’s “Avengers: Infinity War.”

It’s possible that Marvel will reboot the Captain America character. In the comics, Steve Rogers was replaced by others that exist in the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) and Sam Wilson aka The Falcon (Anthony Mackie).

This isn’t the first time they have tweeted memes to each other, and it probably won’t be the last.

    https://twitter.com/ChrisEvans/status/1031897306331799552

The true love story of the “Avengers” may not be Tony and Pepper, or Nat and Bruce, or Vision and Wanda, or even Cap and Bucky. (Sorry, Stucky.) It’s these two. Chris and Robert. Steve and Tony. Captain America and Iron Man.

That “Civil War” was just a bromance quarrel.

Avengers 4” still appears to be filming additional photography/reshoots, but it’s not clear which stars have completed their scenes. Chris Evans, for one, has made it clear he’s hanging up his suit as Captain America after “Avengers 4.” It’s possible some original Avengers have finished their scenes, forever.

So all of these tweets, and the car, may be nostalgic parting gifts. This won’t be over for us until “Avengers 4” confirms whatever it confirms and sets up the next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But many “Avengers” stars are basically entering “Game of Thrones” final season territory — their part in the story is done, and now it’s all over but the crying.

Post-“Avengers,” Chris Evans has some films lined up, plus an upcoming Apple series. When RDJ isn’t tweeting about Chris Evans, he’s usually tweeting or Instagramming about Jude Law, preparing for their third “Sherlock Holmes” movie, which is scheduled for 2020.

“Avengers 4” is currently scheduled to open in U.S. theaters on May 3, 2019.

Chris Evans is ready to graduate from the MCU.

That’s not breaking news, since it was already reported that the “Avengers 4” reshoots would most likely mark Evans’ final time suiting up as Captain America.

    But now it’s really happening.

Marvel Studios is now filming additional photography/reshoots, and Evans’ new photo shows he’s returning to Cap’s classic look. Gone is the rugged bearded Steve Rogers of “Avengers: Infinity War.” Instead, he’s back to the blond First Avenger.

Evans posted his “Senior year” photo along with dog Dodger:

“Avengers 4” set photos have heavily hinted to a time travel element, so maybe that’s how we see Cap’s old school look. Or it could be that after the snaps of “Infinity War,” he feels like the world needs classic Cap again.

Fans are bracing themselves for tears, saying goodbye to Cap — and possibly the other original Avengers. The synopsis for “Avengers 4” did mention “sacrifices,” and … well, just be prepared.

“Avengers 4” is scheduled to open in the U.S. on May 3, 2019, not quite two months after the next film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, “Captain Marvel.”
