Cameron Diaz is starring in a sequel to 1989’s ‘Troop Beverly Hills’.
Clea DuVall is directing from her own script.
Sony’s TriStar Pictures is backing the new movie.
Keeping her return to movies rolling, Cameron Diaz has been lining up a variety of projects. And she’s adding another to the list, as Deadline reports that she’s teaming up with actor/writer/director Clea DuVall for a sequel to 1989 comedy ‘Troop Beverly Hills’.
DuVall has written a script for the new movie, and will call the shots for Sony’s TriStar arm.

We’re not sure we had either a sequel to the movie –– which celebrated its 30th anniversary back in 2019 –– or Diaz’ involvement on our bingo card, but it could certainly be fun.

The movie follows Beverly Hills socialite Phyllis Nefler (Shelley Long) who is undergoing a contentious divorce and seeks to prove her worth to her estranged husband. She becomes a den mother to a troop of Beverly Hills Girl Scouts that her young daughter belongs to. Her unorthodox ways run her afoul of a rival troop leader (Betty Thomas), but Phyllis and the girls persevere at the regional Jamboree.
We don’t yet know how the new movie will continue the story –– perhaps one of the kids is now grown up and has her own adventure?
Diaz is in the cast for new Apple TV movie ‘Outcome’, directed by Jonah Hill. And she’s reprising her role as Princess Fiona in ‘Shrek 5’, out on next year.

Sony has a new ‘Charlie’s Angels’ movie in development.
‘Crazy Rich Asians’ co-writer Pete Chiarelli is on script duty.
There are no casting or director details yet.
Despite some less-than-successful attempts across the last decade or so, Sony clearly sees the upcoming 50th anniversary of ‘Charlie’s Angels’ as a reason to try to craft a new movie featuring crime-fighting women.
We’ll have to wait and see who ends up taking this one on –– will it be a totally fresh take or could the company look to reunite movie trio Drew Barrymore, Lucy Liu and Cameron Diaz (more on them below)?
(L to R) Kristen Stewart, Ella Balinska and Naomi Scott in 2019’s ‘Charlie’s Angels’. Photo: Sony Pictures Releasing.
The show, a crime drama about a trio of women working at the Townsend private detective agency, debuted in 1976 and quickly dominated the pop culture conversation. The series originally cast Kate Jackson,Farrah Fawcett and Jaclyn Smith in the leading roles — and catapulted them into TV history.
Cheryl Ladd joined the show in season 2 and starred through the rest of its 115-episode run. John Forsythe voiced their unseen boss, Charlie Townsend, who directed the operation over the telephone.
Barrymore, Liu and Diaz starred in two movie versions in 2000 and 2003, but more recent attempts, including a new TV series and director Elizabeth Banks’ 2019 film, didn’t fare as well.
There’s no word yet on what Chiarelli’s take might be.
When will the new ‘Charlie’s Angels’ movie be on screen?
Sony hasn’t announced anything yet, so with this in “early development,” we’ll have to wait and see when it might arrive.

Movies and TV shows in the ‘Charlie’s Angels’ franchise:
Cameron Diaz will star with Stephen Merchant in a new rom-com.
Merchant is aboard to direct.
Amazon MGM Studios is backing the movie.
Since she returned to screens with last year’s Netflix action comedy effort ‘Back in Action’, Cameron Diaz has been filling her schedule with projects.
The movie is without an announced title at this point, but it does have a studio home, as Amazon MGM has picked up the rights to Merchant’s script, which he wrote with ‘The Outlaws’ collaborator John Butler.
In a plotline that honestly sounds like it could have come out in the 1990s or mid-2000s, the new movie sees Merchant as a workaholic Brit employed at an upscale New York hotel who needs a wife for appearances.
He strikes a deal with a struggling stand-up comic (Diaz) who is desperate for health insurance.
Their fake marriage starts as a transaction – but ends in a hilariously unexpected romance.

Celine Song is writing a ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ sequel.
Sony is backing the new movie.
There is no word yet if original cast members Julia Roberts or Rupert Everett will return.
Though the company hasn’t exactly had the best luck dusting off its back catalogue for sequel treatment –– neither ‘Karate Kid: Legends’ nor especially ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ have set the box office aflame or won over legions of new fans –– that, apparently isn’t stopping Sony.
(L to R) Cameron Diaz, Dermot Mulroney and Julia Roberts in ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’. Photo: TriStar Pictures.
The original starred Roberts as food critic Julianne Potter, who discovers that her longtime friend, Michael (Mulroney), is planning to get married to Kimmy Wallace (Diaz). The two, who had a relationship in college, had vowed to get hitched with each other if they each remained unmarried by the ripe old age of 28.
Realizing she is in love, Jules plans to sabotage the event…
‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ has been remade several times in other countries, including Mexico and China.
Song certainly seems like a solid choice to write this –– she’s proved she can channel romantic longing and adult relationships, and would have a good take on where the characters are now.
What has the cast said about progress on a sequel?
(L to R) Dermot Mulroney, Julia Roberts in ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’. Photo: TriStar Pictures.
Mulroney, while making the promotional rounds for one of his latest projects, Netflix series ‘The Hunting Wives’ teased what he’s heard in an interview with the New York Post:
“I know nothing about it. Last I heard, quote, lawyers were talking, unquote.”
So… yes, hardly the biggest update, but Song’s hiring surely points to the studio looking to propose something.
When will the ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ sequel be in theaters?
That’s tough to answer at this point –– with Song only just starting work on a script, no director attached and deals yet to be locked in with cast old or new, a release date is unlikely for now.
And Sony may also look to see how other legacy sequels such as ‘Practical Magic 2’ perform before truly committing to this one.

List of Movies and TV Shows Featuring Dermot Mulroney:
Laura Solin wrote the story, which has echoes of ‘Falling Down’.
Jake Szymanski is in the director’s chair.
Since she emerged back on the acting scene after a well-deserved break with Netflix movie ‘Back in Action’, Cameron Diaz has signed on to a couple of other projects (more on them below), but has now scored another gig.
Written by Laura Solon, the original script for the new movie focuses on a single mother fighting to keep one little promise to her daughter on the absolute worst day of her life.
The project has been described as a comedic version of ‘Falling Down,’ the 1993 drama directed by Joel Schumacher that starred Michael Douglas as a man who hits his breaking point while trying to get to his daughter’s birthday party.
Solon will be an executive producer as will Mark Moran. This is the third collaboration for the Solon and producer Beau Bauman, who previously worked together on comedies ‘Office Christmas Party’ and ‘Let It Snow’. The writer came up with the script on spec, with Bauman helping to develop it –– and he has one more connection, as he was a producer on ‘Back in Action’.
‘Back in Action, which saw Diaz and Jamie Foxx as a seemingly ordinary couple whose espionage past comes back to impact their family life, marked the actor’s return to movies following a decade-long break after 2014’s ‘Annie’ (also featuring Foxx).
Following that, she was announced as reprising the voice role of Fiona in ‘Shrek 5′, which will be in theaters on December 23rd, 2026. That movie sees Zendaya joining the cast as Shrek and Fiona’s daughter.
She is also part of the cast of Jonah Hill’s new directorial effort ‘Outcome’, starring Keanu Reeves as Hollywood star Reef, forced to confront his problems and atone for his past after being threatened by a bizarre video footage from his past. That has yet to lock down a release date.
When will ‘Bad Day’ be on screens?
Netflix is looking to get this one moving as quickly as possible, with a fall shoot planned for New York and New Jersey.
That said, we’ll wait and see when the streaming service puts the movie out on its servers, but assuming the movie shoots later this year, it should be out at some point in 2026.

Zendaya is part of the cast for ‘Shrek 5.’
She’ll play the daughter of Shrek and Fiona.
Walt Dohrn and Conrad Vernon are directing the new movie.
Given that the ‘Dune,’ ‘Challengers’ and ‘Euphoria’ star is set to follow her voice role in 2018’s ‘Smallfoot’ with another DreamWorks Animation title, we might just.
But in this case, she’s aboard the crown jewel of the company’s portfolio, the latest installment of the ‘Shrek’ franchise.
DreamWorks Animation and Universal confirmed the news in a new YouTube video…
The video also serves to lock down that Myers and Diaz are definitely back for this one, and we’ve already heard from Eddie Murphy on his confirmed return.
“We started doing ‘Shrek 5’ months ago. I recorded the first act, and we’ll be doing it this year, we’ll finish it up. ‘Shrek’ is coming out, and Donkey’s gonna have his own movie. We’re gonna do Donkey as well. So we’re gonna do a ‘Shrek’ and we’re doing a ‘Donkey’ [movie].”
DreamWorks didn’t mention the Donkey movie, but there’s still a chance we’ll see that.
(L to R) Shrek (Mike Myers) and Donkey (Eddie Murphy) in ‘Shrek’. Photo: DreamWorks Animation.
The ‘Shrek’ franchise launched with the Oscar-winning 2001 movie that centered on Myers’ ogre, Shrek, who falls for Fiona, the princess of Far Far Away who has been cursed, trapped in the body of an ogre. Donkey provided comic relief, pathos and friendship to Shrek, with the film praised for its humorous twist on fairy-tale tropes.
In addition to the main Shrek movies, it also spawned two ‘Puss in Boots‘ spinoffs, starring Antonio Banderas, which all propelled the franchise to becoming the second biggest in animation history, with $2.9 billion globally.
While the exact plotline for the new movie has yet to be revealed, there have been hints on how it’ll continue the story of the central ogre family and their various friends.
Michael McCullers, who was a key Myers collaborator on the ‘Austin Powers’ movies, has reportedly been at work on the screenplay for the new ‘Shrek’, working from a story he developed with producer Christopher Meledandri. All the ‘Shrek’ stories, of course, chart new tales based on the character originally featured in William Steig’s book.

We’ve seen various developments in Shrek’s life –– he and Fiona have a family (and Donkey has kids with his dragon partner), so perhaps we’ll be checking back in with their kids for a new story?
It could also potentially see Puss (Antonio Banderas) reuniting with his friends, as hinted at by the end of ‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish’.
And as is usual for this franchise, there will no doubt be riffs on pop culture and fantasy tales.
This is what producer Meledandri told Variety last year of developing the next ‘Shrek’:
“It’s not that dissimilar to the process that we went through with ‘Mario,’ where you look at what the core elements are that audiences have loved, and you do your very best to honor those core elements. And then you’re hard at work to build story elements and new characters that take you to brand new places. The original cast is a huge part of that.”
Who is making ‘Shrek 5’?
Shrek (Mike Myers) in ‘Shrek’. Photo: DreamWorks Animation.
Dohrn started his run on the franchise as a writer on ‘Shrek 2’ and ‘Shrek the Third,’ and as head of story on ‘Shrek Forever After,’ a film in which he voiced Rumpelstiltskin.
Vernon directed ‘Shrek 2,’ ‘Madagascar 2’ and voices Gingerbread Man (aka “Gingy”).
What else does Zendaya have on her schedule?
(L to R) Zendaya and Tom Holland in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’. Photo: Marvel Studios.
She is, as ever, a much in-demand actor.
Last year alone, Zendaya was seen in tennis love-triangle ‘Challengers’ and ‘Dune: Part Two,’ which featured less sports drama, but did also end up with its own love triangle (between Zendaya’s Chani, Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides and Florence Pugh’s Princess Irulan… which, admittedly, is more of a power triangle).
She’ll also reportedly (though it has yet to be officially confirmed) be back as MJ in the next ‘Spider-Man’ movie, which will also see Holland reprising his lead role as Peter Parker in the latest outing for the Marvel character, to be directed this time by Destin Daniel Cretton.
Those two giant movies are due in 2026, but she’s also worked on Kristoffer Borgli’s romantic movie ‘The Drama’ alongside Robert Pattinson. That doesn’t have a confirmed release date, but should be on screens this year.
Meanwhile, there is her much-anticipated return to HBO series ‘Euphoria,’ which has finally started shooting its third season and looks likely to be on screens next year.
When will ‘Shrek 5’ be in theaters?
The movie has a December 23rd, 2026, release date from Universal and DreamWorks, and is the first in the main series since 2010’s ‘Shrek Forever After.’

DreamWorks Animation has set the fifth ‘Shrek’ entry for 2026.
Voice stars Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz are all returning.
No story details have been released.
While on his ‘Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F’ press tour, Eddie Murphy mentioned that he’d been recording voice work for a new entry in the ‘Shrek’ franchise, in which he plays Donkey (more on that below).
That might not count as official confirmation for the next ‘Shrek’ movie, but we have some now, via DreamWorks Animation on social media:
Not too Far, Far Away… @Shrek 5 is coming to theaters on July 1, 2026 with Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz. pic.twitter.com/3j6ctXpPGu
The tweet confirms that stars Mike Myers and Cameron Diaz will indeed return as Shrek and Fiona alongside Murphy.
It’s hardly surprising that the company would return to the ‘Shrek’ universe –– after all, it has earned more than $2.9 billion between the main entries and various spin-offs, including the ‘Puss in Boots’ movies. And added to that, a whole truckload of merchandise and various opportunities such as a Broadway musical, a touring show and theme park attractions.

Eddie Murphy is talking about the future of the ‘Shrek’ movies.
He says he’s already recorded some of his dialogue for a fifth ‘Shrek’ outing.
Murphy also drops mention of a spin-off focused on his Donkey character.
We’ve known for a while that DreamWorks Animation –– never ones to let a franchise opportunity go to waste –– is developing a new installment of the ‘Shrek’ story, and now we have an update from one of the people who makes the movies what they are: actor Eddie Murphy, who provides the voice for fan-favorite character Donkey.
Murphy, who has been on the press tour for the return of one of his other big franchises –– ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ –– talked about what he knows so far.
Keeping the Shrek-verse expanding makes sense, as DreamWorks has seen big success with TV spin-offs and movies about other characters such as Puss In Boots –– whose most recent outing hit big with 2022’s ‘The Last Wish’, which scored $485.2 million globally.
Donkey, of course, is usually one of the more entertaining characters.

While Murphy’s comments clearly confirm that he’s aboard, there hasn’t been clarification on the presence of fellow lead voice actors Mike Myers and Cameron Diaz, though you’ve got to assume that DreamWorks has handed out big paydays so that they return.
We’ll learn more in due course –– surely a teaser will be on the way before too long, or at least some official announcement.

Cameron Diaz is in talks to join the movie ‘Outcome’.
Keanu Reeves is starring, with Jonah Hill directing.
Apple is backing the new movie.
Given that she seemed to be done with acting after completing work on 2014’s musical remake ‘Annie’, it’s reassuring to know that Cameron Diaz still seems to want to grace our screens.
She already has one project on the way –– Netflix action comedy ‘Back in Action’, which co-stars ‘Annie’s Jamie Foxx –– and has now entered talks to star with Keanu Reeves in a new dark comedy ‘Outcome’.

The new movie’s plot focuses Reef (Reeves), a damaged Hollywood star who must dive into the dark depths of his past to confront his demons and make amends after he is extorted with a mysterious video clip.
Deadline’s story on Diaz joining the film offered no details on who she’s playing. Could she be someone from Reef’s life that he’s wronged in the past? Or a woman who knows him now and is shocked to discover exactly what he was up to back in the day?
‘Outcome’ represents the latest film to be directed by actor Jonah Hill (who may also show up in front of the cameras). He co-wrote the script with Ezra Woods.
Hill, best known for the comedy likes of ‘Superbad’ and the ‘21 Jump Street’ movies, has been making inroads into filmmaking. He first directed 2018 coming-of-age tale ‘Mid90s’ and followed that up with 2022’s ‘Stutz’, a documentary about his therapist.
In addition to that, he’s also moved into writing and producing, working on the likes of ‘You People’ (in which he also starred). And he’s been keeping his acting career going with movies such as ‘Don’t Look Up’ and ‘The Beach Bum’.

Who is backing ‘Outcome’?
‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ director Martin Scorsese.
Apple Original Films has picked up the rights to finance and distribute the movie, but there’s no word yet on whether it’ll see the inside of theaters (as with ‘Napoleon’ and ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’) or debut on Apple TV+ (joining the likes of ‘Fingernails’ and ‘The Beanie Bubble’.)
And it marks the latest collaboration between the company and Hill, who is executive producing a Grateful Dead movie that ‘Flower Moon’ filmmaker Martin Scorsese will direct.
What’s next for Diaz and Reeves?

Reeves, meanwhile, was most recently seen in successful fourth ‘John Wick’ outing and has several titles upcoming or in development, including ‘Wick’ spin-off ‘Ballerina’ (which recently got pushed back to 2025), action comedy ‘Good Fortune’ and the still nebulous ‘Constantine’ sequel, which would see him return as occult detective John Constantine.
