  • Here Are the 2016 Independent Spirit Awards Nominees

carol, cate blanchett, carol movieThe nominations for the 2016 Film Independent Spirit Awards were announced Tuesday, giving boosts to several films’ Oscars chances.

Carol” led the pack with six nominations, including nods in most of the major categories (Best Feature, Best Director, Best Screenplay), and two Best Lead Actress nominations for its headlining duo, Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara. It was followed by Netflix flick “Beasts of No Nation,” which scored five nominations in the big categories (Best Feature, Best Director, Best Lead Male) as well as the technical ones (Best Cinematography, Best Editing).

As TheWrap notes, “Beasts” nominations have helped secure it some serious consideration come Oscars time. But another big surprise was the small number of nominations for “Room,” considered by many to be a Best Picture contender at the Academy Awards. It was left off the Spirit Awards’s Best Feature list, though it did score a Best Female Lead nomination for Best Actress Oscar frontrunner Brie Larson. “Spotlight,” meanwhile, also shored up its Oscar hopes, thanks to three Spirit Awards nominations, as well as its selection as the winner of the Robert Altman Award for Best Ensemble.

  • Best of Late Night TV: Sandra Bullock Serves Ice Cream With Fake Arms, Conan Seduces Charles Barkley

If you’re like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don’t worry; we’ve got you covered. Here’s the best of what happened last night on late night.

Did you ever see the old Canadian ice cream shop-set soap opera “Jacob’s Patience,” starring Jimmy Fallon? Missed it? Well! Sandy really sells the idea, and “The Tonight Show” “showed a clip” where all of the actors had to use mannequin arms instead of real arms because Sandra was protecting her hands at the time as a hand model. It’s messy and ridiculous but still fun to watch. But instead of doing a fake clip thing, they should’ve used the fake arms in a game. Next time?
When not trying to scoop ice cream with fake arms, Sandy talked to Jimmy about how her son wanted her to wear a slutty Batgirl Halloween costume this year. Sigh. She vetoed it. And she recalled how Jimmy groped her on stage when they were together at the MTV Movie Awards. Don’t try to change the subject, Jimmy!
Ernie Johnson, Charles Barkley, Shaquille O’Neal, and Kenny Smith were on “Conan” and the group talked about their love for teasing Charles Barkley. Charles was accused of having no rhythm. He actually agreed, but said “we” — meaning himself and Conan O’Brien — had no rhythm, adding that he’d seen Conan on the show. Conan was not about to accept an insult to his dancing, so he got up and did a great demonstration with some “Magic Mike” moves, getting very physical with Charles. Love everyone’s reactions:
This is interesting. Billy Bob Thornton, Brie Larson and Jack Whitehall were on “The Late Late Show with James Corden” and Brie talked about her daily habit of picking spirit animal cards. So she had the guys pick their spirit animal cards on the show. Poor Billy Bob really just wanted to promote his movie but it’s funny to see who got what card.
Anna Faris and Trevor Noah were guests on “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” with “The Daily Show” host explaining how he came to the U.S. from South Africa and admitting he doesn’t know much about baseball. Anna talked about dressing up her son as a dinosaur for Halloween — which is adorable, she said, but adds a level of weirdness because her husband Chris Pratt was in “Jurassic World” and she doesn’t want it to look like self-promotion.
NY Mets fan Jimmy Kimmel made a World Series bet with Kansas City Royals fan Eric Stonestreet of “Modern Family” and Eric had a video chat during the episode to taunt Jimmy. It’s Chris Pratt vs. Chris Evans all over again! And yet … not quite the same.

  • Best of Late Night TV: Brie Larson’s Whisper Challenge and James Corden’s NFL Invasion

If you’re like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don’t worry; we’ve got you covered. Here’s the best of what happened last night on late night.

Let’s kick things off with a classic “Tonight Show” game: The Whisper Challenge! The contenders? Jimmy Fallon (obviously) and Brie Larson, who had to guess what each other were saying while whispering and wearing headphones. Our favorite moment by far was when Jimmy Fallon guessed “straight justice” for “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.” Fail.

In slightly off-topic news, Lena Dunham told the world that she got a urinary tract infection in Japan. She had a lot of thoughts on the topic, and uttered the immortal sentence “This is the best place I’ve ever had a UTI.” Good to know.

In case you hadn’t heard, Jimmy Kimmel is a small claims judge now (move over, Judy), and he presided over a super-dramatic case called “The Little Engine That Couldn’t.” It was basically the most amazing thing that’s ever happened.

Over on “The Late Show,” Stephen Colbert dubbed Cate Blanchett the queen of “Barely Keeping Her S––t Together” and made her perform a high intensity script that he wrote. Also, said script was based off an Amazon order about a blender.

James Cordon infiltrated the NFL and a) was hilarious, b) said that football should be renamed “Throwing In Between Commercials,” and c) wore a tiny tie. Everyone needs to watch.

Best for last: Conan and talked about his feud with Tim Cook, and things got awkward. Apparently, Sorkin apologized and is hoping everything’s chill, but we’re sensing some underlying tension. Let’s just say if Sorkin gets hacked, he’ll know who did it….

  • Haunting ‘Room’ Trailer Will Make You Feel All the Feelings

RoomBrie Larson really ought to have been nominated for an Oscar for her amazing performance in “Short Term 12” a few years ago, but she’ll have the chance to right that wrong with what looks to be a captivating turn in “Room.”

“Room” (not to be mistaken for the campy cult flick “The Room”) tells the story of a woman named Ma and her young son, Jack (Jacob Tremblay) who are held captive in a small, dark space for years. Ma tries her best to create a complete universe inside the room for Jack, until the chance comes to escape. Then, they have to face their greatest test: living in the real world.

    Watch the trailer.

The trailer is alternately chilling, horrifying, hopeful, gut-wrenching, sad, and beautiful. Even in this brief glimpse, Larson is tremendous, portraying Ma as strong and vulnerable at the same time.

“Room” will debut at the Toronto International Film Festival before opening in limited release Oct. 16.

  • Brie Larson, Russell Crowe May Join ‘Kong: Skull Island’

Coach - Presentation - Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Fall 2015After losing a couple of key players, casting for “Kong: Skull Island” is back on track.

Deadline reports that Brie Larson (“Trainwreck“) is currently in talks to take the female lead in the flick, which focuses on the mysterious titular island where King Kong is captured. Larson would join “Avengers” star Tom Hiddleston as one of the headliners of the flick.

And that’s not all. According to Deadline, there’s another big name circling the project: Oscar winner Russell Crowe, who’s being courted to play one of two remaining leading male roles. Both J.K. Simmons and Michael Keaton had previously been attached to the film, but had to drop out over scheduling issues (no doubt due to their own awards success this past year); Crowe would likely take over one of those roles, though no casting breakdowns have been made available.

Of course, another sticking point with the production is that it’s still waiting on a new script, and Crowe’s involvement in the project hinges on what that screenplay entails. The film’s release date is rapidly approaching, and production is going to need to start soon (Deadline says it’s aiming to begin filming either later this year or in early 2016) if it’s going to make that deadline.

Stay tuned to see how things shake out. “Kong: Skull Island” is due in theaters on March 10, 2017.

  • Best of Late Night TV: Kristin Chenoweth’s Duet and Ed Helms’s Support Llama

Let’s kick things off with Late Night” to chat about playing Enchantress in “Suicide Squad.” Apparently, Cara got so worked up during her audition that she felt straight-up murderous. Also, it should be noted that Seth’s thoughts on the “Suicide Squad” trailer are as follows: “everyone looked liked they were about to lick someone or be licked.” Accurate.

Prepare your body, because last night was the 9th Annual “Jimmy Kimmel Live” Pedestrian Belly Flop Competition, which Jimmy says “works the same way prostitution works.” That’s probably all you need to know.

Sony has an “Emoji Movie” coming out (LOLing forever), and Jimmy Kimmel convinced Brie Larson to read out the script with him. Shoutout to genius use of the eggplant emoji.
Ed Helms also visited “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” and he brought an adorable therapy llama with him. His name is Reggie and he’s your new best friend.
Over on “The Tonight Show,” Chevy Chase showed up and played a piano duet with Jimmy Fallon. But the best part was his NSFW pre-performance banter with Jimmy. So many jokes about the host’s injured hand, so little time.
Finally, Late Late Show,” where she and James Corden sung a duet. #blessed
