  • ‘Beauty and the Beast’ Could Rake in $120 Million on Opening Weekend

Emma Watson stars as Belle and Dan Stevens as the Beast in Disney's BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, a live-action adaptation of the studio's animated classic directed by Bill Condon. It’s a tale as old as time: When you have a huge star headlining a high-profile remake of a beloved fairy tale, big box office returns are likely. And according to early tracking, “Beauty and the Beast” is certainly well on its way to a huge opening weekend.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, early reports have indicated that “Beauty” is on pace to make about $120 million on opening weekend next month. And while studio Disney is being more conservative in its own estimates, pegging the flick for just over $100 million in its opening frame, that sum still places the movie in the upper echelon of all-time highest-grossing March releases, joining the ranks of blockbusters such as “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice” ($166.1 million in 2016), “The Hunger Games” ($152.5 million in 2012), and “Alice in Wonderland” ($116.1 in 2010).

That shouldn’t really come as a surprise, though, considering the excitement surrounding the remake. It’s already on pace to pass fellow Disney property “Finding Dory” in advance ticket sales, and its trailers and teasers have beaten out the likes of “Fifty Shades Darker” and “The Force Awakens” to capture single-day online viewing records. Plus, fans have already spotted a “Harry Potter” reference in the flick, and star Emma Watson‘s considerable Potterhead fan base is no doubt eager to search for more.

Watson recently spoke out about the immense pressure she’s feeling — both from fans and from herself — to get the part right, but it looks like she won’t have any trouble convincing moviegoers to give the film a shot. Now, all that remains to be seen is just how much cash the flick can conjure on its opening weekend.

“Beauty and the Beast” opens on March 17.

  • ‘Rogue One’ Has Biggest Thursday Opening of the Year

“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” is off to an excellent start at the box office after scoring the year’s biggest Thursday opening.

The movie pulled in $29 million from Thursday night previews, putting it ahead of “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” ($27.7 million) and “Captain America: Civil War” ($25 million). But that number does fall short of the Thursday night earnings of last year’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” ($57 million).

“Rogue One” is projected to have a $135 to $150 million weekend at the box office, which would make it the second-highest December opening of all time (after “The Force Awakens,” naturally).

It’s all good news for Disney and Lucasfilm, since “Rogue One” is the first standalone “Star Wars” film and tells a different kind of story than the Skywalker saga. The success of “Rogue One” paves a smoother path for upcoming standalone movies, including the young Han Solo tale.

  • ‘Suicide Squad’ Nabs Huge $20.5 Million at Thursday Box Office

Bad reviews can’t keep the skwad down: “Suicide Squad” came out swinging on Thursday night, beating back the naysayers to nab an impressive $20.5 million in preview box office receipts, easily beating the previous August Thursday night champ.

That former record-holder, “Guardians of the Galaxy,” earned $11.2 million on the Thursday before its 2014 opening weekend. Its also the current August opening weekend record holder, with a Friday through Sunday total of $94.3 million.

But “Squad”‘s numbers certainly put it on track to easily outpace that sum. Early reports had suggested a $115 million opening for the DC villains team-up flick, but that number was later adjusted to the $130 million to $140 million range, where it’s currently tracking. It’s also doing well overseas, pulling in a total of $8.1 million from seven foreign markets on Wednesday.

“Squad” — like its predecessor, “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” — took a drubbing from critics after the review embargo was lifted earlier this week, leading many DC fans to angrily protest. Some even wanted to shut down review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes (which currently lists the film as rotten at 27 percent). That’s unlikely to happen, but fans may rebel in a different way, by carrying the flick to a huge box office haul this weekend.

We’ll see just how much of that anger translates into dollars in a few days. “Suicide Squad” officially opens today.
