    • ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ has a successful second weekend at the box office.
    • It dropped just 53% to earn $97 million domestically.
    • New arrivals, such as ‘Harold and the Purple Crayon’ had a tougher time of it.

Deadpool just keeps on taking aim at box office records and achievements.

While box office pundits were eager to see how ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ might fare on its second weekend of release (traditionally Marvel and other big movies can be front-loaded, and attendance drops in further weekends), the successful superhero outing has proved it’s in the charts for the long haul, earning an impressive $97 million this weekend.

That’s a low 53% drop in income and indicates that fans and general audiences are still happily turning out for the movie.

What new records has ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ taken down?

With its domestic total now standing at $395.6 million, the latest outing for the Merc with a Mouth has deposed ‘The Passion of the Christ’ (which made $371 million domestically in its run, not accounting for inflation), which should please “Marvel Jesus” no end.

That $97 million now stands as eighth-biggest second weekend in domestic box office history, sneaking past ‘Barbie’, which had that slot after last year’s success.

Globally, the new Marvel effort is up to $824 million globally, with $1 billion and more clearly in sight and likely to be crossed within a few days (‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ has been doing great business during the week as well as the weekend). That is more than either of the previous two ‘Deadpool’ movies achieved in their theatrical runs.

And the movie is currently the third-biggest R-rated movie of all time, behind just ‘Joker’ ($1.07 billion) and ‘Oppenheimer’, which earned $975 million.

Elsewhere, it was a solid week for ‘Deadpool’s veteran chart-mates as ‘Twisters’ took $22.7 million, staying second place in its third weekend of release for $195.6 million domestically. It has served as good counter-programming for adults in search of non-comic book fare who still want a little excitement in their movies.

Third place went to M. Night Shyamalan’s ‘Trap’, which is seen as a mildly decent start, though we’re sure Warner Bros. (which didn’t screen the movie for critics) was likely hoping for something bigger. The movie earned $15.6 million this first weekend on release.

Fourth was ‘Despicable Me 4’, proof positive once again that Gru and the Minions mean big business for Illumination and Universal, with $11.3 million for fourth place as it crossed $300 million in its fifth week of release and now stands at $313.9 million domestically.

Inside Out 2’ continues to also bring in the family crowd, with $6.7 million in fifth (don’t forget it has been in cinemas for eight weeks now) and $626.9 million in total domestically, which makes it (for now) the highest-grossing movie of 2024 domestically so far.

Struggling in sixth place was Sony’s ‘Harold and the Purple Crayon’ which starred Zachary Levi, which was panned by critics, earned solid scores from moviegoers, but couldn’t even crack the top 5 on release, taking in a dismal $6 million domestically and $9 million globally, which is not great for a $30 million-budgeted movie.

There was other good news for Disney which, thanks to the likes of ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’, ‘Inside Out 2’, ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ and ‘The First Omen’, is the first studio this year to cross $3 billion at the box office, with a running total so far of $3.109 billion.

We’re used to celebrity name combos –– your “Bennifer” etc. But movies of such different styles being treated as a duo? That really doesn’t happen very often. And yet here we are with “Barbenheimer”.

The pop cultural sensation of moviegoers choosing a double bill of ‘Barbie’ and the ‘Oppenheimer’ (trust us when we say, it’s best to start with Christopher Nolan’s weighty, thoughtful exploration of the father of the Atomic Bomb before moving on to Greta Gerwig’s fun, colorful comedy, which despite appearances has some satire and real intelligence of its own) has also been igniting the box office to successful effect.

Both of the movies opened big, and both have held on to huge swathes of their audiences as film fans kept turning out to experience them.

    What’s Happening With ‘Barbie’?

Greta Gerwig’s subtle satire of gender relations and product placement is the biggest film of the moment and could well end up as the most successful of the year, on track to become one of –– if not the only –– billion-dollar movie in 2023.

‘Barbie’ opened with $150 million, and continued to play well through the following week, crowds turning out consistently. It doesn’t hurt that many kids are on summer vacation and the movie has family appeal.

Second weekends can increasingly be tough for movies that open wide and successfully, but Gerwig’s movie rose to the latest challenge, adding an impressive $93 million in its sophomore three-day segment, a 43% drop from its debut and representing the seventh biggest second weekend in history. It’s up there with the giant likes of the more successful modern ‘Star Wars’ films and some of Marvel’s ‘Avengers’ titles.

As it stands right now, ‘Barbie’ has more than $750 million in the bank globally and is the third biggest movie of the year so far.

    ’Oppenheimer’s No Bomb

Cillian Murphy is J. Robert Oppenheimer in 'Oppenheimer,' written, produced, and directed by Christopher Nolan.
Cillian Murphy is J. Robert Oppenheimer in ‘Oppenheimer,’ written, produced, and directed by Christopher Nolan.

Nolan’s film, meanwhile, is also doing spectacularly for the director and for studio Universal, which took the chance to snag his services after he was displeased with the treatment of fellow filmmakers by former Hollywood home Warner Bros. during the pandemic.

‘Oppenheimer’ opened to $80.5 million, a feat for a three-hour movie with a darker, mature subject matter and complex tone. And, like ‘Barbie’, it has continued to perform, becoming the first R-rated film to gross more than $10 million for seven days in a row on Friday.

Its own second weekend was similarly impressive, the Cillian Murphy-starring movie dropping just 44% for $46.6 million this past weekend. All in all, the movie has earned more than $400 million at the worldwide box office.

Here’s what senior Comscore analyst Paul Dergarabedian told Variety:

“Weekend two proves the outpouring of interest in ‘Barbie’ and ‘Oppenheimer’ a week ago was not a fluke. Both films put up second weekend numbers that would have been considered solid as debuts and reflect two of the best sophomore session holds in box office history.”

Such was the impact of that one-two punch that new releases had trouble making it into the charts. Disney’s ‘Haunted Mansion’ (the latest adaptation of the classic theme park ride) could only muster $24.6 million in third, which isn’t that great for a movie costing $150 million to make and millions more to promote. Yet while horror movie ‘Talk To Me’ opened sixth, its far smaller $4.5 million budget means a $10 million opening is counted as more of a success.

‘Toy Story 4’ Crosses $1 Billion, Pushes Disney to New Record

    Toy Story 4

It’s to a billion and beyond for “Toy Story 4,” and that’s huge news for Disney.

The latest installment in the beloved Disney-Pixar movie series has officially surpassed the $1 billion mark at the global box office, making Disney the first studio to have five films accomplish that feat in the same year, Variety reports. “Toy Story 4” follows in the footsteps of “Avengers: Endgame,” “The Lion King,” “Captain Marvel,” and “Aladdin.” The only other film to cross $1 billion so far this year is Sony’s “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” per Box Office Mojo data.

With its new record, Disney beats … Disney. The studio previously had four billion-plus-grossing films in 2016, as Variety pointed out. Those films were “Captain America: Civil War,” “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” “Finding Dory,” and “Zootopia.”

It’s not surprising to see “Toy Story 4” bring home the new record for Disney. The beloved franchise added “Toy Story 3” in 2010, and that was another box office juggernaut. It also grossed more than $1 billion worldwide and was the top film in North America that year, according to Box Office Mojo.

Disney has earned the right to celebrate, and the year still isn’t even over. The studio has more movies coming — “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil,” “Frozen 2,” and “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” are all due out before the end of 2019.

  • ‘Deadpool’ Sets Thursday Box Office Record With $12.7 Million

Deadpool” has come out swinging: The violence and nudity-filled Marvel flick — starring Ryan Reynolds as the Merc With a Mouth — has earned a whopping $12.7 million in Thursday preview screenings, the highest total ever for both a February release and an R-rated film.

That record-breaking night foretells big things for the flick’s future throughout the rest of the weekend, with some optimistic industry analysts suggesting “Deadpool” could wind up making between $70 million and $80 million throughout its first three days of release. Studio Fox is hedging its bets, estimating a lower haul between $60 million and $65 million, but based on Thursday’s performance, that may be more than modest. It’s already bagged $12 million from international markets, bumping up its current worldwide total to more than $25 million in preview receipts alone.

“Deadpool’s” impressive domestic Thursday numbers take down previous R-rated preview box office champ “The Hangover Part II,” which hauled in $10.4 million back in 2011. And it also bested fellow high-grossing R-rated flick “Fifty Shades of Grey,” which was the previous February release preview record holder, scoring $8.6 million just last year.

“Deadpool” is in theaters now — and it looks like you better see it this weekend, before all your friends spoil its big surprises.

  • ‘Star Wars’: Every Box Office Record ‘The Force Awakens’ Has Broken

It’s official: “Star Wars” is bigger than “Avatar.”

On Wednesday, “The Force Awakens” became the highest grossing film of all-time at the domestic box office, crushing the $760.5M gross of James Cameron‘s hit in a record 20 days of release. And to add even more coin to its Scrooge McDuck vault, “Star Wars” also hit the $800M mark at the international box office.

Over the holiday break, fans watched as J.J. Abrams‘ very entertaining blockbuster broke box office records left and right. To impress your friends, here’s a handy list of all the times the movie has made history so far:

    — Fastest film to reach $100M (21 hours), $200M (3 days), $300M (5 days), $400M (8 days), $500M (10 days), $600M (12 days), and $700M (16 days)

    — Biggest opening weekend ever and biggest December opening ($247.9M)

    — Biggest opening week ever ($390.85M)

    — Biggest Thursday preview ever ($57M)

    — Biggest opening day, single day and Friday ever ($119.1M)

    — Biggest IMAX debut ($30.1M)

    — Biggest second weekend of all time ($149.2M), propelling the industry to the biggest overall Christmas weekend of all time ($296.4M for all films, Dec. 25-27)

    — Biggest third weekend of all-time ($90.2M)

    — Biggest Sunday ($60.6M), Monday ($40.1M), and Tuesday ($37.3M) in box office history

    — Biggest Christmas Day ($49.3M) and New Year’s Day ($34.39M) ever.

But wait — there’s more. “Star Wars” also posted the biggest global launch in the history of ever, with an insane $528.9M. It also cleared a billion dollars in a record 12 days.

So how high will “Star Wars” go? It’s hard to say, because literally no movie has ever done this type of business before. But the film shows no signs of slowing down, especially with a lack of serious competition in January — a month that is traditionally ho-hum in terms of box office.

Some pundits say that the film could reach $1B domestic. *brainsplode

  • ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Tops ‘Avengers’ at Global Box Office

Another day, another impressive box office feat for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”: The flick has now surpassed “The Avengers” at the global box office, earning a jaw-dropping $1.54 billion since its December 18 debut.

That means that “The Force Awakens” is now the fourth highest-grossing film of all time at the global box office (not accounting for inflation), leaving “Furious 7” ($1.515 billion) and “Avengers” ($1.529) in its dust. That leaves only three flicks for “The Force Awakens” to overtake if it wants to win the worldwide box office crown: “Jurassic World” (number three, with $1.668 billion), “Titanic” (number two, with $2.186 billion), and “Avatar” (number one, with $2.787 billion).

It may be impossible to catch up to that latter film, but “Star Wars” has proven that pesky, long-standing box office records are no match for the power of “The Force Awakens,” breaking at least 40 box office records as of this week, and possibly more. (So many that even industry tracking titan Box Office Mojo admits that it can’t keep up with them all quickly enough.)

“The Force Awakens” has yet to overtake “Avatar”‘s domestic total of $760.5 million, though that record is expected to fall any day hour now. Whether it can take down that flick’s gold standard global tally is less certain (industry analysts have tentatively predicted that it won’t), but it’s undeniable that “TFA” is due to rake in cash for the foreseeable future, especially with its China release slated for January 9.

  • ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Breaks Global Box Office Record

That was fast: After shattering numerous box office records over the weekend — including obliterating “Jurassic World‘s” domestic opening weekend tally — “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” has proven that it’s an international powerhouse as well, officially breaking “World’s” global record total, too.

In an interview with Bloomberg on Monday morning, Disney chief Bob Iger said that while numbers are still rolling in, “The Force Awakens” is currently on track to earn approximately $528 million over its first three days, surpassing “World’s” opening weekend global total of $524.9 million. It previously bested that flick’s domestic opening total of $208.8 million, too, with early estimates suggesting “Force” had earned about $238 million.

But the good news continues for Disney: Iger said Monday that those initial estimates were actually lower than what the company is currently tracking, and “The Force Awakens” could wind up with a domestic opening haul of a whopping $247 million — or possibly even higher.

“That’s an incredible weekend,” Iger told Bloomberg, in one of the biggest understatements ever.

With all the tickets it’s already sold, expect “The Force Awakens” to remain a box office powerhouse for the foreseeable future. The records can only keep falling from here.

  • ‘Spectre’ Already Broke Box Office Records in the U.K.

James Bond fans in the United States still have to wait more than a week for the premiere of “Spectre,” but based on its performance so far at the United Kingdom box office, it will be well worth it.

“Spectre” has already crushed a couple key box office records abroad, besting the all-time ticketing tallies for both Tuesday and Wednesday showings in the U.K. On Tuesday, the flick bagged a whopping $9.2 million at only 647 locations. The film followed that with a Wednesday take of $8.8 million.

Those figures put “Spectre” on track to easily beat “Skyfall“‘s 2012 bow at the U.K. box office, with the former film currently gunning to overtake the latter’s opening weekend (Friday, Saturday, Sunday) haul of $32.4 million. The jury’s still out, though, on whether “Spectre” can also surpass that “Skyfall”‘s total U.K. haul of £103 million (approximately $157 million), which earned it the status of the highest-grossing movie of all time across the pond.

Only time will tell how that overseas success will translate to American audiences, but it bodes well for Bond and co. that his countrymen are already going gaga for the flick. Maybe Sony will want to try to convince Daniel Craig to stick around for a while after all.

“Spectre” opens in the U.S. on November 6.

  • ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ Takes Aim at Box Office Records

    Avengers: Age of Ultron
It’s no secret that “Avengers: Age of Ultron” will make a ton of money during its opening weekend. But just how big will this sure-to-be-massive movie ultimately become?

Predictions among box office analysts are mixed, but one forecast seems a given: The second flick in the “Avengers” series should easily outpace the first film’s jaw-dropping $207.4 million domestic debut from 2012. Per Variety, “AMC is reporting dozens of opening-night sellouts, MovieTickets.com is moving tickets at four times the rate of the first ‘Avengers’ and Fandango says pre-sales … [match] those for all previous Marvel Studios films combined.”

That excitement is a huge coup for Marvel and Disney, and it’s matched by opening weekend estimates that range from the more conservative $200 million to as much as $215 million or higher. Couple that with the $201 million “Ultron” has already racked up overseas, and “Ultron” will easily cruise to box office dominance over the next few days.

While it’s opening weekend success is assured, what about the flick’s long-term international box office chances? “Furious 7” made headlines recently when it became the fastest flick ever to earn $1 billion worldwide; could “Ultron” steal that record? And furthermore, will it outpace “The Avengers,” which has raked in $1.52 billion and earned the third place crown on the all-time international box office chart?

Furious 7” has proven to be a juggernaut, but it would seem that the momentum is swinging back in Tony Stark and co.’s favor. Only time will tell, of course, but bet on the Avengers crew to come out swinging in a fight for some of that box office glory. Current champ “Avatar” ($2.79 billion) may want to watch its back.
