    • Blumhouse is by far the best fit, and the Saw franchise’s only real hope of survival

Help us Jason Blum, you’re our only hope.

The ‘Saw’ movies are wildly popular in the horror community, so when Lionsgate canceled the eleventh installment, fans were devastated. The reasoning for the cancellation is even more frustrating, as it seems to stem from disagreements between the producers and Lionsgate. Not being able to put their differences aside, the project was removed from release calendars. It felt as if all hope was lost for these beloved films to continue.

While the franchise has its ups and downs, it really found its footing with the return of Tobin Bell as Jigsaw in ‘Saw X’. The fanbase was reinvigorated and waiting on the edge of their seats to see what traps were in store for us in ‘Saw XI’. Now that Blumhouse has entered the picture, things are looking up. Out of all the studios that could acquire the rights, they are the perfect fit. Here’s why.

Blumhouse Will Make Sure The Saw Franchise Stays The Same

The ‘Saw’ movies simply do not work without the use of unique and thrilling traps. The whole premise of these films is people being forced to play horrific games that test their will to live. The victims have often done something in their past to put them on Jigsaw’s radar, and most of them do not make it out alive.

What has made this franchise stand out among others is the traps. Fans are so obsessed with them that there are multiple rankings found online, and if one falls flat, they are sure to make noise about it. If put in the wrong hands, the ‘Saw’ franchise could easily go downhill.

The studio behind it needs to not only have confidence in what they can do for the movies, but they also need to ensure the new films capture the feel of the previous ones. There is no need for a revival or reboot; what comes next must be a continuation. Blumhouse will absolutely be willing to do this, while other studios could think of this acquisition as an opportunity to start all over again.

Blumhouse Knows How To Deliver A Great Horror Movie

Blumhouse is by far the perfect home for the ‘Saw’ franchise. If it cannot be Twisted Pictures anymore, it should be them. The studio knows the horror business inside and out. They have projects that fill every corner of the genre – from comedy horrors like ‘M3gan’, to thrillers like ‘The Black Phone’, to outright terrifying movies like ‘Insidious’, and everything in between.

Being such a well-loved franchise, it is scary to see the ‘Saw’ movies with a new studio at the helm. Switching hands is often a death sentence because the new films can lose what made the older ones what they were. If anyone can be trusted with the future of ‘Saw’, however, it is Blumhouse. Not only do they know what they are doing, but they have a passion for the genre, which is apparent whenever you watch one of their films.

Blumhouse puts their heart and soul into making movies for the fans, and ‘Saw’ will be no different. The fact that they are the saviors riding in on white horses is a testament to Jason Blum and his team. This does not feel like a cash grab but rather a way to ensure these films keep coming because of the love they have for horror as a whole. Surely, they appreciate what these movies do for the genre and do not want to see that end.

    Jason Blum Welcomes Collaboration

‘M3GAN’ producer and CEO of Blumhouse Productions Jason Blum.

Considering the fact that Saw XI was canceled because of an internal dispute, another reason Blumhouse is the perfect choice to acquire the rights is because CEO Jason Blum welcomes collaboration and creativity. He works closely with James Wan of Atomic Monster, and while the two surely have disagreements behind closed doors from time to time, they don’t ever let it affect their films.

There have been many interviews with directors and producers who have worked with him, and they never have anything bad to say. In fact, they praise the way he believes in them. It is known in the industry that he is open to any and all ideas and that he is always willing to put trust in his team. Blumhouse’s production model is to make films on a smaller budget and allow the directors creative freedom to do what they feel is best. Blum is known for working with indie filmmakers to help them bring their vision to life.

Blumhouse recently put on their first ‘The Business Of Fear’ event in Los Angeles, where they spent nearly an hour breaking down the horror genre and discussing why it is thriving. Horror films are made for the big screen, and Jason Blum expressed that a theatrical experience is always the right way to see a scary movie. Just listening to him speak for that long with such vigor and excitement made it quite clear how much these movies mean to him.

‘Saw’ would be in good hands with Blumhouse because not only will they ensure the new movies feel cohesive to the previous ones, but they also know how to do horror right, and they are passionate about the genre. If anyone can pull this off, it is them.

With Twisted Pictures crumbling, it is time for them to pass the torch. Jason Blum is standing by, at the ready, and is the obvious choice. It is a little nerve-wracking knowing these producers are arguing with one another. Hopefully they can come together and do with is right, if for no one else than for the fans who have invested twenty-one years in this franchise and do not want to see it come to an end.

    • Lee Cronin will direct a new ‘Mummy’ movie.

    • It’ll arrive via New Line in 2026.

Having cut his teeth –– or perhaps that should be fangs –– on short films, Dublin-born filmmaker Lee Cronin stepped up to directing features with anthology ‘Minutes Past Midnight’ and then ‘The Hole in the Ground.’

But he really impressed with last year’s ‘Evil Dead Rise,’ which relocated Sam Raimi’s Deadites to a city high rise and saw a family dealing with the dreadful threat. That movie, which was shot on a low budget, made more than $150 million worldwide.

Though there had been talk of Cronin cooking up a direct sequel to the movie, it appears he’s pivoting –– at least for now –– to a different horror subject.

The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Cronin will next write and direct a new take on ‘The Mummy.’

The movie was originally announced by Blumhouse and Cronin earlier this year as a mystery project via an Instagram post that covered the script’s title.

What’s the story of ‘The Mummy’?

1999's 'The Mummy'. Photo: Universal Pictures.

The ‘Mummy’ movies draw from the fascination with Egyptian burial rituals, and the curse surrounding those who would disturb the tombs.

Back in 1932, Universal Studios started the long-running mummy franchise with ‘The Mummy.’ The movies, usually starring Boris Karloff focused on the story of an ancient prince who was accidently brought back to life after being buried alive many years earlier. The Mummy haunts those under his curse including his forbidden lover.

The original mummy movie was remade three times with similar characters but always a slightly shifted storyline.

Various sequels followed, and of course the studio couldn’t let the subject lie in its cine-tomb.

Most famously –– and well-received –– in terms of revivals was Stephen Sommers’ 1999 effort, ‘The Mummy,’ which starred Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz as an adventurer and a librarian who go seeking an architectural dig and end up unleashing the terror of Imhotep (played in this case by Arnold Vosloo).

Two sequels followed: ‘The Mummy Returns’ (2001) and ‘The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor’ (2008), the latter directed by Rob Cohen.

A spinoff series titled ‘The Scorpion King’ (2002) followed that, telling the story of Mathayus (Dwayne Johnson) and his rise to become the Scorpion King. That brought us three sequels: ‘The Scorpion King 2: Rise of a Warrior’ (2008), ‘The Scorpion King 3: Battle for Redemption’ (2012) and ‘The Scorpion King 4: Quest for Power’ (2015).

Most recently, Universal looked to try again, aiming to bring the creature back to life, as Alex Kurtzman directed ‘The Mummy’ starring Tom Cruise, Sofia Boutella and Annabelle Wallis.

    20057297

The intent was to launch a new linked cinematic franchise hyped as the Dark Universe, though the poor reception for that first movie meant that plan was scuppered. Universal has since switched to filmmaker-focused standalone films.

Outside Universal, Hammer Films did its own ‘Mummy’ movie in 1959 that starred Christopher Lee.

Given that the Mummy concept is in the public domain, it was only a matter of time before someone else took on the challenge, but we’ve yet to learn exactly what elements Cronin will exploit in his effort.

This is what Cronin has said about the new movie:

“This will be unlike any Mummy movie you ever laid eyeballs on before. I’m digging deep into the earth to raise something very ancient and very frightening.”

Who is backing the new movie?

James Wan’s Atomic Monster and Blumhouse are co-financing the film. Producing are Wan, Jason Blum and John Keville. Executive producing are Michael Clear, Judson Scott and Macdara Kelleher. Alayna Glasthal is the executive overseeing the project for Atomic Monster.

Wan, of course, is no stranger to horror and horror franchises, since he’s the man behind the likes of the ‘Conjuring’ movies and the sprawling ‘Saw’ series.

Blumhouse, meanwhile, has been cranking out thriftily-budgeted films for a few years now ever since Blum took a shot on buying ‘Paranormal Activity’ and saw huge returns.

Next year alone, the company will bring us a wide variety of movies including ‘M3GAN 2.0,’ ‘Wolf Man’ (another fresh take on a Universal horror classic) and ‘The Black Phone 2.’

But unlike the previous incarnations, New Line will release the new Mummy movie.

When will the new ‘Mummy’ stalk on to screens?

According to the Blumhouse team, Cronin’s new movie is scheduled for an April 17th, 2026 release.

Mirroring the silence in the films, the haunted house will embrace unique sound design, special effects and will incorporate the use of American Sign Language (ASL) for the first time ever at Halloween Horror Nights.

While the attraction does not incorporate elements of the recent box office hit ‘A Quiet Place: Day One’, it does follow the characters from the original film and includes lots of alien scares.

  • Blumhouse Touts ‘King Spawn’ Screenplay

    Preview:

    • Producer Jason Blum has revealed the script cover for ‘King Spawn’.
    • Matt Mixon, Malcolm Spellman and Scott Silver are credited with the new draft.
    • There is no word on what this means for creator Todd McFarlane’s directorial ambitions.

If there is one complicated comic book character whose ongoing development woes can rival that of Marvel’s ‘Blade’, it’s surely Todd McFarlane’s hellish antihero ‘Spawn’.

The latest incarnation has been through the wringer, even with McFarlane constantly talking about his plans for it. At last, though, there appears to be some positive momentum as Blumhouse boss Jason Blum –– his company agreed to co-produce a new movie years ago –– took to social media with a cover page for a version called ‘King Spawn’.

    What’s the story of ‘Spawn’?

    'Todd McFarlane's Spawn'.

Created in 1992 by McFarlane for Image Comics, the character is a former black-ops agent who makes a deal with a demon after being betrayed and killed. The demon allows him to return to Earth, but when he returns, five years have passed, his wife has moved on, and he roams Earth as a disfigured spawn of hell.

What has happened with ‘Spawn’ so far?

Spawn has been the subject of a successful animated series and a movie in 1997 that didn’t score with critics or audiences and barely made its money back.

At the San Diego Comic-Con in 2017, McFarlane confirmed that he’d partnered with the Blumhouse team to make an R-rated new movie adaptation.

Yet ever since then, it has been a stream of announcements countered with delays, one-step-forward-two-steps-back momentum and no sign of bigger studio backing.

Jamie Foxx and Jeremy Renner were cast in the lead role of Al Simmons and Twitch Williams, but elsewhere there was talk of endless script re-writes and McFarlane getting frustrated with the process.

It has been a couple of years since our last concrete update –– that would be the hiring of writers Matt Mixon (‘The Milwaukee Project’), Scott Silver (‘Joker’) and Malcolm Spellman (‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ and the upcoming ‘Captain America: Brave New World’).

Interestingly, McFarlane only has a creator credit here, which doesn’t necessarily bode well for his input going forward. Is he still involved as director? Blum doesn’t say. Will Foxx and Renner still star? Unclear.

But judging from the title, the ‘King Spawn’ script adapts McFarlane’s eponymous run of the comics that launched in 2021.

Here’s what McFarlane told ComicBook.com last year when the writers were announced:

“My original plan has gotten tripped up a bit. We’re bringing on A-list people. Not just one, but multiple A-list people… What they’re not going to want is to do a cheap, low-budget movie with all of these big-name people on it. That’s not why they’re signing up. They’re not looking for a big extravaganza. But they’re also not looking for an 8 million dollar horror movie budget.”

Right now, the script page is all we have. But at least it’s something…

  • Movie Review: ‘Imaginary’

Opening in theaters on March 8th, ‘Imaginary’ is the latest horror from the increasingly prolific –– and increasingly hit-or-miss Blumhouse team. Sadly, the story of a long-dormant childhood fear factor coming back to haunt a woman and her family is more firmly in the “miss” category.

While imaginary friends are clearly on filmmakers’ minds at the moment between this and John Krasinski’s upcoming, much more family-orientated ‘IF’, the new attempt at finding terror in the mundane-meets-the-metaphysical is more disappointing than most of Blumhouse’s recent efforts.

Does ‘Imaginary’ Dream Up Some Real Terror?

DeWanda Wise as Jessica in 'Imaginary.'

How much you appreciate ‘Imaginary’ might depend on your tolerance for seemingly endless passages of exposition delivered in the middle of scenes, effectively grinding the movie to a halt so someone can spout off about spirits and their filtering through different cultures.

It’s either that or some fairly rote frights blended awkwardly with mawkish bonding as a step-family learns to come together via the power of, er, a terrifying bear.

    Script and Direction

DeWanda Wise as Jessica and Director Jeff Wadlow on the set of 'Imaginary.'
(L to R) DeWanda Wise as Jessica and Director Jeff Wadlow on the set of ‘Imaginary.’ Photo Credit: Parrish Lewis.

The script for this new horror movie is unfortunately one of its weakest points. Cranked out by Greg Erb and Jason Oremland alongside the film’s director, Jeff Wadlow, it’s an uneasy mish-mash of predictable plot points and even less surprising jump scares.

And the tone is all over the place; while it can be a good thing to spend some time setting up your characters, ‘Imaginary’ doesn’t boast particularly original examples in the first place, its dynamic built on over-used fractiousness between the members of this blended family. There’s plenty of scope for terror in the idea of danger lurking from someone’s past and haunting their present, but the concepts here have been brought to screens several times before in more original and satisfying fashion.

Even worse, there are glaring signposts all over the place, from the main character’s job (a children’s book writer/illustrator obsessed with a spider character and terrorized by a giant arachnid in her nightmares) to scenes of a child psychologist interviewing our heroine’s younger step daughter, only for things to take a disturbing turn.

There are ways to combine obvious elements in a way that feels fresh (see, for example, the ‘Spider-Verse’ movies, which take the endlessly-exploited Spider-Man origin and find new things to say, layering on extra emotion and meaning), but ‘Imaginary’ is content to stay simmering at a lukewarm pace and level of thoughtfulness.

Wadlow, meanwhile does himself and his cast no favors on the directing front. This is largely blandly shot, and while he looks to get experimental in the final act, even that is embarrassingly amateurish, a sort of Tim Burton-lite funhouse that even by Blumhouse’s tightly budgeted standards looks cheap and humiliating. Sure, it’s meant to be grown from children’s imagination, but did it need to look so shockingly low rent? And the less said about the final forms of the creatures, the better.

Playing our main protagonist, conflicted stepmother Jessica, DeWanda Wise struggles with breathing life into such a blandly predictable character. She’s got the past emotional baggage, the distant, ailing father (if you don’t guess why he’s in the condition he is from the moment you meet him, shame on you), and entirely uninspiring issues with her current family. Wise is watchable, but even she can’t save this role.

As her youngest step-kid Alice, Pyper Braun does a serviceable enough job, working best when she’s channeling ‘The Exorcist’ for a “conversation” with seemingly haunted bear Chauncey in front of Dr. Soto (Veronica Falcón). A bundle of her own neuroses, Alice is a perfectly fine foil for the main threat, but even she’s mostly called upon to be sweet, pouty or scared in entirely basic fashion.

The less said about her teen sister Taylor, played by Taegen Burns, the better. It’s no fault of Burns, who is burdened with a completely cliché rebellious type who boringly wants to spend time with the hunky teenage boy next door or shout at Jessica that she’s not her real mom and shouldn’t look to replace her in Alice’s affections. There is something interesting to be mined in the portrayal of a young woman forced to grow up quicker than expected and care for her sister, but ‘Imaginary’ does so in utterly facile fashion.

Everyone else in the film is either an exposition spout or so paper thin (Tom Payne’s Max, who a musician who leaves to go on tour so quickly he might as well not be in the movie) that they barely register.

And Chauncey, the totem for the title’s not-so-imaginary being? He won’t replace M3GAN in anyone’s list of great horror characters.

    Final Thoughts

Unlikely to end up on anyone’s list of best horror movies (though at least it has the completely disposable, low-rent likes of ‘Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey’ to compare favorably against in the pantheon of scare bears), ‘Imaginary’ has a couple of decent moments, but neither is enough to rescue it from coming across as a bargain bin horror.

Wadlow has made better horror before ‘Cry Wolf; for one, and even ‘Truth or Dare’ but this represents him on autopilot. Thinking it’ll make for a solid night of terror at the movies? You’re imagining things.

‘Imaginary’ receives 5 out of 10 stars.

    What’s the Story of ‘Imaginary’?

When Jessica (DeWanda Wise) returns to her childhood home with her family, she finds her old teddy bear, Chauncey, and sees that her youngest stepdaughter Alice (Pyper Braun) has grown attached to it.

After Alice’s behavior becomes concerning, and the games that she and Chauncey play turn increasingly sinister, Jessica starts realizing that Chauncey is much more than the stuffed bear she believed him to be for all those years…

    Who Else is in ‘Imaginary’?

Wise and Braun are joined in the movie by Tom Payne, Betty Buckley, Taegen Burns, Matthew Sato, Verónica Falcón and Dane DiLiegro (who voices Chauncey).

    • Matthew McConaughey is in talks for ‘The Lost Bus’.

It’s been a couple of years since we’ve seen Matthew McConaughey on our screens (that would be in Guy Ritchie’s 2019 movie ‘The Gentlemen’, though he reprised his voice role as ambitious koala Buster Moon in 2021’s ‘Sing 2’), but if Apple and Blumhouse have their way, he’ll be back.

According to Deadline, he’s locking in a deal to star in ‘The Lost Bus’, a new based-on-truth thriller that is headed our way from Blumhouse and Apple Original Films. But despite the Blumhouse company being involved, this isn’t a horror film –– unless you hate fire, perhaps (which is far from the most illogical fear).

Instead, this will draw from a real life act of bravery by two ordinary people in an extraordinary situation.

The movie will chart the efforts heroic bus driver Kevin McKay and school teacher Mary Ludwig, who helped navigate a bus full of children through the deadly wildfire as the town of Paradise is caught in the destruction and chaos. The fire destroyed most of the mountain town and killed 85.

Out Of The Furnace’s Brad Ingelsby adapted the script from Lizzie Johnson’s book ‘Paradise: One Town’s Struggle to Survive an American Wildfire’, which chronicled the deadly incident.

Jamie Lee Curtis poses backstage with the Oscar® for Actress in a Supporting Role during the live ABC telecast of the 95th Oscars® at Dolby® Theatre at Ovation Hollywood on Sunday, March 12, 2023.

The new movie has been a passion project for Jamie Lee Curtis since 2022, after hearing Johnson talk about the book in an NPR interview. She investigated the rights and set it up with Blumhouse, where her Comet Pictures company has a first-look deal.

Together, they hired Brad Ingelsby to write a script, which has since found its way in front of ‘United 93’ and ‘News of the World’s director Paul Greengrass.

He was interested, but forward momentum last year was stymied by the writers and actors’ strikes that shut down development and potential shooting.

Now though, with McConaughey negotiating to star (Deadline isn’t clear on whether Curtis will appear in the film, though she could conceivably play Mary Ludwig as well as producing) and Greengrass considering making this his next film, this one looks set to speed up quickly, especially since Apple is looking to back the movie.

The director is also attached to adapt T.J. Newman’s book ‘Drowning’ (about passengers and crew trapped in a crashed, sinking plane), but from the looks of this, he’s planning to make ‘The Lost Bus’ a priority before he moves on to the plane film.

As for McConaughey, he’s got one other movie, crime thriller ‘The Rivals of Amziah King’ making its way through post-production, and has some TV projects gearing up to shoot, including one for Apple, ‘Brother from Another Mother’, which co-stars Woody Harrelson.

    • Julia Garner is the latest addition to ‘Wolf Man’.
    • Christopher Abbott is aboard to star in the horror.
    • Leigh Whannell is directing the movie for Blumhouse and Universal.

Universal has once again turned to the Blumhouse team –– and to director Leigh Whannell, who did such a successful job updating ‘The Invisible Man’ –– to finally crack a new version of werewolf story ‘Wolf Man’, another take on one of the studio’s classic monsters.

With Christopher Abbott already aboard to star, the cast is growing to include ‘Ozark’ break-out Julia Garner.

What’s the story of ‘Wolf Man’?

This new take on the hairy tale will follow a family threatened by a lethal predator; Abbott is playing the father of the clan while Garner will be the mother.

That’s about all the studios will say about the movie –– though you have to figure that Abbott might end up howling at the moon.

The casting marks a reunion between Garner and Abbott, as the two worked together alongside in Sean Durkin’s 2011 drama ‘Martha, Marcy, May, Marlene’, which was Garner’s first professional acting job.

Who is making the new ‘Wolf Man’ movie?

As mentioned, Whannell is aboard to direct, and he’s worked on the latest draft of the script with actor Corbett Tuck (a frequent collaborator on the ‘Insidious’ movies and ‘The Invisible Man’).

They’re re-writing work already completed by ‘Dumb Money’ script duo Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo.

But the movie’s history stretches back farther than that…

At one point, the movie was going to be a fresh opportunity for director Derek Cianfrance and star Ryan Gosling, who have previously collaborated on the likes of ‘Blue Valentine’ and ‘The Place Beyond The Pines’. But that has since lingered in development, with rumors swirling of creative differences between Gosling and executives.

And Whannell was actually attached to the project before Cianfrance and Gosling boarded it, so this its current state is something of a full circle. Gosling will still score an executive producer credit, which we suppose will have to be “Kenough” for him.

If you dig even further back, there was also talk (around the time Universal’s much-touted “Dark Universe” monster franchise was still a going concern) of Dwayne Johnson taking the lead in a Wolfman movie. While that would have been something to see, our fear would be for something more along the lines of ‘Van Helsing’.

When will ‘Wolf Man’ howl into theaters?

The new horror thriller is currently scheduled to arrive on October 25, 2025.

  • Changes Likely for ‘The Exorcist: Believer’ Sequels

Director David Gordon Green on the set of 'The Exorcist: Believer.'
Director David Gordon Green on the set of ‘The Exorcist: Believer.’

    • Universal has sunk more than $400 million into buying the rights to ‘The Exorcist’.
    • ‘The Exorcist: Believer’ performed solidly but didn’t set the box office alight in the same way as ‘Halloween’.
    • Director David Gordon Green may not necessarily return to direct the sequels, which are likely to see some creative tinkering on their way to screens.

Is the planned ‘Exorcist’ movie trilogy kicked off by last week’s ‘The Exorcist: Believer’ bedeviled? Universal might be starting to think it is.

While David Gordon Green’s first movie in what is imagined, like his ‘Halloween’ effort, as a three-movie franchise that follows up William Friedkin’s original 1973 horror classic did decent if uninspiring business at the box office (it has so far made $46 million worldwide, which covers its thrifty $30 million budget), it needs to perform better to recoup a much bigger figure.

And the studio, according to The Hollywood Reporter, is considering changes going forward.

What has happened with the new ‘Exorcist’ movies so far?

(from left) Chris MacNeil (Ellen Burstyn) and Victor Fielding (Leslie Odom, Jr.) in ‘The Exorcist: Believer,’ directed by David Gordon Green.

Universal has already put $400 million into acquiring the rights to the movie franchise alone, even before the money it spent directly on the first film. And that puts a heavier amount of pressure on the new trilogy to perform.

The Reporter’s story doesn’t have specifics, but it is looking like there could be some creative tinkering for ‘The Exorcist: Deceiver’ and the other, yet-to-be-revealed third movie spawned from Green’s first instalment.

A completed script is already in hand for ‘Deceiver’, though there could well be changes on that front.

And the studio has found ways to generate revenue from the title beyond any new films –– including fees for streaming the movie on Peacock and an ‘Exorcist’ attraction at Universal Studio’s Halloween Horror Nights.

Will David Gordon Green return for the other movies?

‘The Exorcist: Believer’ director David Gordon Green and producer Jason Blum.

While Green directed all three ‘Halloween’ movies and had previously said he’d be handling the new trilogy in the same fashion, recent statements from the director are making that look less likely.

Here’s what Green told The Hollywood Reporter about his future plans:

“My intention is just to start making things, and as those plans come together, if I find myself in ‘The Exorcist: Deceiver’ director’s chair, I’d be thrilled. But right now, I’m navigating it from a story perspective and looking at my realities of life as I pivot.”

He’s also been showing signs that he’s ready to make other things besides horror movies. He does have creative outlets such as TV comedy ‘The Righteous Gemstones’, but on the big screen he was ready to step away from the horror genre until Blumhouse boss Jason Blum dangled the idea of the ‘Exorcist’ movies in front of him.

However it all works out (and whoever ends up making it), we are still likely to see ‘The Exorcist: Deceiver’ in 2025.

  • Taylor Swift’s ‘Eras’ Concert Film Breaks Presale Records

You will likely have seen the trailer for ‘Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour’ concert film (if not, you can find it here). And such is the demand the musical megastar’s work –– especially from fans, some of whom haven’t been able to attend the sold-out concerts, and others who wish to see (or re-experience) the LA show(s), that presales on the movie have been stratospheric.

In the first 24 hours, the film has earned $26 million in the U.S., with AMC Theaters also selling in Mexico and Canada (via its Regal and Cinemark chains) for a grand total in the first 24 hours alone of $37 million.

This marks a canny move by AMC, which set itself up as the distributor as well as the exhibitor, meaning that it doesn’t have to pay fees to a studio and keeps more of the cash.

Early estimates put the opening weekend projections for the movie at around $70 million, including those presales.

The tour, which as the title suggests sees the singer/songwriter performing music from her various career “eras”, has been a massive triumph. The concert was attended by more than three million “Swifties” during the first leg of its U.S. run.

Not only did it shatter all concert sales records, but it also left tens of millions of fans wanting more, either because they attended the concert and wanted to see it again, or after being unable to obtain tickets for the many sold out performances.

While the first leg concluded last month, Taylor Swift has further dates planned for the tour, with the aim to head internationally next year.

When it was announced that ‘The Eras Tour’ would land on the same day as David Gordon Green’s new horror movie, ‘The Exorcist: Believer’, the internet was quick to spawn the latest portmanteau term in movie world (following “Barbenheimer”) as talk of “Exorswift” began to circulate.

It was hoped that, like ‘Barbie’ and ‘Oppenheimer’, the new combo might prove successful, especially since nervy studios have begun moving their movies later down the release calendar without striking stars to promote them, leading to fewer new releases.

Yet, clearly intimidated by the thought of competing with the incredibly successful recording artist, the demons have made a run for it, as Blumhouse and Universal have decided to shift ‘Believer’ to a week earlier, and that movie will now open on 6th October.

When does ‘The Eras Tour?’ hit theaters?

Scene from 'Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour Movie.'
Scene from ‘Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour Movie.’ Photo: AMC Theatres.

‘Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour’ will launch in theaters on Friday, October 13th. It’ll have a unique release plan, playing at least four showtimes per day on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays in every U.S. AMC Theatre location.

AMC will offer the film in IMAX and Dolby Cinema as well as standard screenings, with fees varying by format and theatre. In anticipation of an expected rush of interest –– A.K.A., a repeat of Ticketmaster’s hectic presale roll-out for the U.S. Eras Tour dates — AMC upgraded its website and ticketing engines to handle more than five times the largest influx of ticket-buying traffic ever experienced by the company. You can purchase tickets here.

In a fun nod to fans, the adult price is $19.89 (before tax), which references ‘1989’, her fifth studio album, released in 2014 and the next to have been re-recorded under the ‘Taylor’s Version’ concept, which sees her reclaiming her back catalogue.

Time to meet your new best friend in the latest thriller from Blumhouse Productions, ‘M3GAN.’ M3GAN, AKA Model 3 Generative Android is the perfect storm of an artificial intelligence program becoming self-aware, and taking her job entirely too seriously.

    EHoHneTp3nydUSOSsXuuw

The trailer already created a buzz on the internet ahead of the films release, prompting endless memes of M3GAN performing a series of (now signature) dance moves before switching to slasher mode. In fact, prior to the movie’s premiere, a team of M3GAN doll dancers could be spotted at various events and venues performing the signature number. The film opened on January 6, 2022 to $30.4 million domestically and has earn over $171.2 million worldwide as of today. The story comes from the minds of Aleka Cooper (‘Malignant‘) and James Wan (‘The Conjuring‘ franchise), and was directed by Gerard Johnstone (‘Housebound‘).

Who Is In The Cast Of ‘M3GAN?’

‘M3GAN’ stars Allison Williams (‘Get Out‘) and Violet McGraw (‘The Haunting Of Hill House’), who are no strangers to the horror genre. When it comes to bringing the killer doll to life, it takes a team – the role is voiced by Jenna Davis, and physically portrayed by 8-year-old actress Amie Donald. Paired with CGI to complete its characteristic look. The cast also includes Ronny Chien (‘Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings‘), Brian Jordan Alvarez (‘80 For Brady‘), Jen Van Epps (‘Together Forever Tea‘), Lori Dungey (‘The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring‘) and Stephane Garneau-Monton.

    What Is ‘M3GAN’ About?

In the film, toy designer/robotist Gemma (Williams) was working on a child-sized android A.I. companion, which she named M3GAN (Model 3 Generative Android). When Gemma becomes the parental guardian of her niece Cady (McGraw), she uses the opportunity to put M3GAN to the test. All things were going well until M3GAN’s artificial intelligence programming began to take its tasks too seriously, going to the extreme to protect Cady by brutally taking down anyone who rebels against her.

The official synopsis for ‘M3GAN’ is:

“M3GAN is a marvel of artificial intelligence, a lifelike doll that’s programmed to be a child’s best friend. When a brilliant roboticist gives her young niece an M3GAN prototype, it soon becomes violent and does anything to protect the girl.”

In an interview with Variety, producer Jason Blum admitted that they were already playing with the idea of a sequel before the first film was even released.

“After I saw the first movie, we had a good sense that a sequel might really work. So, we broke our cardinal rule and we started t walking about a sequel before the movie was released. I felt so bullish that we started entertaining a sequel earlier than we usually do.”

Set to return to the follow-up film are stars Allison Williams and Violet McGraw to reprise their roles as Gemma and Cady. Screenwriter Aleka Cooper will also return. No word yet on whether Gerard Johnstone will return to direct or if Blumhouse is eyeing a new director. Plots are under wraps for now.
