  • ‘Black Panther’ Is ‘Cross Between James Bond and The Godfather’

“Black Panther” like his Vibranium shaken, not stirred.

Marvel’s upcoming superhero movie gets the spotlight on the cover Entertainment Weekly this week, just in time for Comic-Con. EW also released a bunch of new photos that reveal more details about T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman), adversary Erik Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan), cover agent Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o), and the denizens of Wakanda.

All of the Marvel movies have different tones, and “Black Panther” is a mash-up of two iconic film classics.

“What I think we landed on was sort of a cross between James Bond and ‘The Godfather,’” executive producer Nate Moore said. “A big, operatic family drama centered on a world of international espionage. So hopefully we’re getting the best of both worlds.”

Boseman also referenced 007 in talking about T’Challa, the young ruler of Wakanda. “There’s always a possibility that there could be some other woman,” he noted, adding, “In the James Bond movies, there is always the girl but then in the next movie there is another girl.

“Lupita [Nyong’o, who plays former lover Nakia] and I are always joking about that. She will say, ‘There better not be another woman in the next one!’ I’m like, ‘Hey, you better lock it down!’”

Here are a few of the new images — head over to EW for the rest:

  • Check Out Marvel’s Stunning New ‘Black Panther’ Photos

Go ahead and welcome yourself to Wakanda by checking out more than a dozen photos from Marvel’s upcoming “Black Panther” movie.

Entertainment Weekly put Chadwick Boseman‘s T’Challa and company on the cover of its Comic-Con double issue. They also posted 20 photos from the movie, featuring Black Panther himself, Erik Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan), Okoye (Danai Gurira), Ayo (Florence Kasumba), Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o), Zuri (Forest Whitaker), Shuri (Letitia Wright), Ramonda (Angela Bassett), Everett K. Ross (Martin Freeman), and more.

“We could make five movies only about Panther and his world because it’s so rich,” Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, told EW.

Director and co-writer Ryan Coogler told EW what sets Black Panther apart in the Marvel world. “What makes him different from other superheroes first and foremost is he doesn’t see himself as a superhero. He sees himself as a politician. That’s the first thing on his mind when he wakes up in the morning: ‘How am I going to fulfill my duties as king of this place?’”

Boseman told EW that this movie picks up from T’Challa’s debut in “Captain America: Civil War,” which showed the assassination of his father, T’Chaka (John Kani), the previous king of Wakanda:

“It [explores] his mourning process, his connection to why his father was killed, and feeling like he should have been able to do something about it. All that ties into how he’s going to rule.”

Here are some of EW’s photos, including the Wakandan Royal Portrait tweeted by Chadwick Boseman himself:

  • Why Some ‘The Walking Dead’ Fans Are Nervous for Michonne in Season 8

Everyone wants “The Walking Dead” called her first, Marvel!

There’s no need for TWD fans to panic yet. Yes, Deadline just reported that Danai Gurira will be starring in “Avengers: Infinity War,” which is now filming at the same time that she’s taping her role as Michonne in “The Walking Dead” Season 8. But Gurira’s part in “Infinity War” is probably relatively small, reprising her role as Okoye, one of the Wakanda warriors who’ll first be seen opposite Chadwick Boseman in “Black Panther.” There are almost a million (slight exaggeration but not much) characters in Marvel’s third “Avengers” movie, so it may not take her that long to film scenes.

There’s also this point, via ComicBook:

“The Walking Dead films in Senoia, Georgia, for the most part — with some shoots taking place at Tyler Perry Studios closer to Atlanta. Avengers: Infinity War is currently coming together at Pinewood Studios, located in Fayetteville, Georgia. Pinewood Studios and Raleigh Studios (home of The Walking Dead) are a 15 minute drive from one another if the driver [drives] at a slow Sunday cruise pace.

In other words: Gurira can film both Avengers: Infinity War and The Walking Dead Season 8. We have no reason to believe Gurira is exiting the AMC series in favor of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”

So don’t worry. Or do worry, but just about heat exhaustion for so many actors to be doing major stunt scenes in the Georgia summer heat.

It doesn’t mean Michonne is in danger. Then again, it doesn’t mean she’s safe, and some fans were already a little worried before this “Avengers” news came out, after that major twist in the comic book storyline. But even if the show follows that storyline and gives it to Michonne, it wouldn’t happen for a while. Or so we hope. Rick Grimes can’t lose another love interest or he’ll definitely lose his mind for good.

“The Walking Dead” Season 8 premieres October on AMC.

  • ‘Black Panther’ Trailer Had 89 Million Views in 24 Hours

    Take our money now, T’Challa!

The first trailer for Chadwick Boseman‘s “Black Panther” debuted Friday night during Game 4 of the NBA Finals, leaving fans desperate for a visit to Wakanda. (The official poster arrived earlier in the day.) According to The Hollywood Reporter, the trailer earned 89 million viewers in its first 24 hours, including 19 million from NBA viewers.

While that’s an impressive haul, it’s not a record for Marvel. THR said “Thor: Ragnarok” is still the most-watched Marvel trailer with 136 million views in its debut, but “Black Panther” made the top three, and did better than the teasers for “Captain America: Civil War,” “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” and “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.”

Marvel’s official teaser trailer is still YouTube’s No. 21 trending video as of Monday evening, with more than 17.4 million views.Perhaps more important than overall views is the overall reception, which has been overwhelmingly positive. “Black Panther” became a huge talking point on social media, THR reports, earning 349,000 mentions in 24 hours — which is more than the NBA game itself, and second only to the premiere of the “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” teaser.

If you’re interested in a deep-dive of the trailer, Entertainment Weekly broke everything down with analysis from director Ryan Coogler. The movie arrives in theaters February 16, 2018. And Boseman confirmed that his Black Panther will then join the rest of the MCU in “Avengers: Infinity War.”

  • See the First Poster for ‘Black Panther’ (And Watch First Trailer During NBA Finals Tonight)

Chadwick Boseman looks regal as hell in the first poster for “Black Panther.” In the upcoming film, he plays T’Challa, king of Wakanda, who is also the (usually) masked superhero Black Panther.

Per THR, the film, takes place after the events of “Captain America: Civil War,” where Cap and crew learned Black Panther’s true identity. Black Panther will be going up against Michael B. Jordan as evil Killmonger and Ulysses Klaue (Andy Serkis), who was first seen in “Avengers: Age of Ultron.”

Among the stellar cast: Oscar winners Lupita Nyong’o and Forest Whitaker, Danai Gurira (sword-wielding Michonne on “The Walking Dead”), Daniel Kaluuya (“Get Out”), and Angela Bassett.

THR already got a look at some footage, including the new king’s coronation and a casino fight with Serkis’s bad guy.

And look for the first teaser trailer for the film during tonight’s NBA Finals, which start at 6 p.m. PT on ABC. As for the movie itself, you’ll have to wait until Feb. 16, 2018.

  • Fans Are Loving ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ Star’s Semi-Spoilery New Set Photo

Earlier this week, the Russo brothers marked Day 63 of the “Avengers: Infinity War” shoot, and shortly after that, another star confirmed his role in the movie by posting an intriguing set photo/video.

This third “Avengers” movie is going to be massive, and to illustrate that, the directors showed the sheer number of trailers on set for one day. (As one fan joked, “Half of those trailers are @robertdowneyjr ‘s.”)

    Day #63 of Infinity.

A post shared by The Russo Brothers (@therussobrothers) on

Last night, Chadwick Boseman added himself to the scale of the production, confirming what everyone suspected, that Black Panther will of course be in “Infinity War,” after being introduced in “Captain America: Civil War” and starring in his own “Black Panther” film. But did you know that T’Challa would be the center of a Captain America/Black Widow sandwich?

It’s not much of a video when there’s no real sound or movement, beyond water lapping in the background. But fans were happy to see Black Panther join the fold, and some were especially happy to see evidence of a Steve/Natasha scene:

Yeah, but that’s probably not the big takeaway he was hoping for. This might be, though:

Most fans were just happy to see the three characters together, whatever they do:

“Infinity War” is going to include every superhero and their cousin, so it will only be shocking to hear who’s not in it. (Besides DC characters.)

    Here’s the movie synopsis:

“As the Avengers and their allies have continued to protect the world from threats too large for any one hero to handle, a new danger has emerged from the cosmic shadows: Thanos. A despot of intergalactic infamy, his goal is to collect all six Infinity Stones, artifacts of unimaginable power, and use them to inflict his twisted will on all of reality. Everything the Avengers have fought for has led up to this moment – the fate of Earth and existence itself has never been more uncertain.”

“Avengers: Infinity War” opens May 4, 2018, followed by “Avengers 4” on May 3, 2019. But first, Boseman’s “Black Panther” movie opens February 16, 2018.

  • Marvel’s ‘Black Panther’: Chadwick Boseman Celebrates End of Filming

And that’s a wrap for Marvel’s “Black Panther.” Chadwick Boseman‘s highly anticipated solo film, directed by Ryan Coogler, has finished principal photography for its 2018 release.

Boseman debuted T’Challa/Black Panther in “Captain America: Civil War,” and the critics who got to see an advance screening of the next Marvel Cinematic Universe film, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” also got to see some early “Black Panther” footage. That footage has yet to be made available to the public, but we’re on standby for more official releases, including a trailer this summer (maybe during Comic-Con).

Boseman has been sharing some set photos, and today he celebrated the end of filming in a photo with co-star Lupita Nyong’o (who plays Nakia, a special forces bodyguard and T’Chala’s love interest), along with director Coogler, and actor Sydelle Noel.

Noel retweeted the post, writing, “Yes, we did! …and making history. #ThatsaWrap.”

Here are more recent posts from Boseman:

Danai Gurira, who plays Okoye, head of the all-female special forces of Wakanda, wrapped her role earlier this week and shared a cast/crew photo:

The all-star “Black Panther” cast includes Michael B. Jordan as a Wakandan exile who wants to overthrow T’Challa; Martin Freeman as Everett K. Ross of the Joint Counter Terrorism Center; Angela Bassett as T’Challa’s mother; plus Forest Whitaker, Andy Serkis, and Sterling K. Brown.

Here’s the official movie synopsis from Marvel:

“Black Panther” follows T’Challa who, after the events of ‘Captain America: Civil War,’ returns home to the isolated, technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda to take his place as King. However, when an old enemy reappears on the radar, T’Challa’s mettle as King and Black Panther is tested when he is drawn into a conflict that puts the entire fate of Wakanda and the world at risk.

“Black Panther” was shot in Atlanta and South Korea, and is scheduled for release in theaters on February 16, 2018.

  • (Almost) Everything We Learned From Last Night’s Marvel Open House

On Monday night, I was invited, along with a handful of other journalists, to an “open house” at Marvel Studios’ offices on the Disney lot in Burbank. Honestly I didn’t know what to expect. Open house could have meant anything. They could have been showing off their new couches and conference rooms for all we knew. (And seriously, nobody knew a thing.) We got into groups and went on the tour of the offices, which is strikingly cool from the moment you get off the elevator. There were giant murals on the wall; in the waiting room were several Iron Man suits, lit up and looking impressive. Towards the reception desk were costumes from “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” (more on that in a minute).

It can’t be stressed just what a transformation this space has undergone. When the offices moved from Manhattan Beach to Burbank, they were a cluster of nondescript workspaces with little flare and barely any cohesion. If you got off at the Marvel floor in the Frank G. Wells building (named after the beloved Eisner-era executive who died tragically in a helicopter crash), chances are you wouldn’t even know it’s the Marvel floor. Not anymore.

We made our way into a massive room. On one side was a ping-pong table. On the other side was a model of Disneyland’s Main Street. It’s unclear what era it was from, because of the placement of the Astro-Orbiters (remember, it used to be on top of the PeopleMover platform); maybe it was a hodgepodge. It was very detailed; there were lit-up Electrical Main Street Parade floats in a backstage area and on the far side of the model fiber-optic fireworks glittered. (The model is President of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige’s.) Elsewhere, there was a life-size Baby Groot under a bell jar and a replica of Thor’s hammer. We sat down on modern couches and watched a sizzle reel from “Black Panther,” which finishes shooting tomorrow. The reel was a combination of interviews, footage from the set, and conceptual artwork. Several people talk about how advanced the nation of Wakanda, first glimpsed at the end of “Captain America: Civil War,” is, with vehicles that look like space ships flying around, and advanced armor (including what looked like some kind of robotic rhinoceros — yes, please). Michael B. Jordan, who plays the villain, says that the movie will be “honest and gritty.”

Later in the tour we walked into the screening room on the first floor of the building and watched dailies from the film. There was a scene where Lupita Nyong’o seriously beat up some soldiers, another featured traditional warriors on a large boat, and most tellingly was a sequence where Chadwick Boseman walks into a water-filled arena overseen by Forest Whitaker shamanistic Zuri. (It has been debated whether or not the more magical elements of the Black Panther character would be present in the film; judging by this the answer is probably.) The footage, while raw, seemed to have that lived-in, slightly off-center, still-elegant long take feel that brilliant filmmaker Ryan Coogler brought to the unexpectedly great “Rocky” spin-off “Creed.”

Another, longer sequence featured Klaue (Andy Serkis), last seen getting his arm severed in “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” walking into a casino or nightclub. Klaue is soon greeted by Everett Ross (Martin Freeman), a member of the Joint Counter Terrorism Center (also last seen in “Captain America: Civil War”), and the two have some surprisingly comedic back-and-forth. Everett makes a great joke about Klaue dropping a mixtape. It turns out Klaue really is dropping a mixtape and asks Ross for his email address. It’s very funny. Of course, soon after Klaue shows up a giant action sequence breaks out and T’Challa (aka the Black Panther) leaps into action. I’ve heard the movie described as Marvel’s 007 movie and this sequence certainly reinforced that. It also reinforced the fact that “Black Panther,” despite its more serious subject matter and cultural sensitivity, will still have all the fun, excitement, and humor of the very best Marvel movies. February 2018 can’t come soon enough.

After watching the “Black Panther” sizzle we walked up to the art department.

Hanging on the walls was artwork from “Black Panther” (including a teasing glimpse of Jordan’s character), “Thor: Ragnarok,” and “Spider-Man: Homecoming.” On a large, vertically turned monitor was a pre-production sketch of Thanos, the Marvel Cinematic Universe-wide big bad that was teased way back at the end of the first “Avengers” in 2012. Looking at the image, it struck me that this was the first time we’ve really seen the character standing up. Most of the time he’s been in that regal floating throne. Taking him all in he looks big and burly and truly imposing. On one hand is the Infinity Gauntlet, the glove that will (at some point) hold the Infinity Stones, those mystical doodads that everybody from Thor to the Guardians of the Galaxy have been clamoring over for the last five years of Marvel movies. If this is the guy every hero has to face, well, be worried for the heroes. In the next art room there was even more art and, oh yeah, “Ant-Man and The Wasp” director Peyton Reed. This was a huge surprise. I didn’t think we’d actually be meeting any of the filmmakers on our tour; I probably would have tucked my shirttail in if I had known this. Reed, who also directed the sorely underrated first “Ant-Man,” showed off some preliminary artwork from the new film, including both old and new versions of the Ant-Man suit (with the “Captain America: Civil War” being the in-between iteration). Reed teased Pym’s new lab (“Where is he working?”), further far-out adventures in the quantum realm (the Marvel Cinematic Universe equivalent of the comics’ micro-verse), and new technology that allows Ant-Man and the Wasp to shrink not only themselves but also those around them. One of the most striking pieces of artwork was Luis’s van from the first film in the jaws of a dog. It looks terrific; really beautiful and weird like the best parts of the first movie with a larger emphasis on playful psychedelic. Reed was as charming and accommodating as always and nimbly avoided answering certain questions.

Elsewhere on the wall was artwork of Brie Larson in her “Captain Marvel” costume. But everyone was pretty tight-lipped on that. Our next stop was the visual effects review review room. Standing in the corner, tall and grey and dressed like he was waiting outside of a Los Feliz coffee shop, was Taika Waititi, the super-genius director of “Thor: Ragnarok.” “Today we’re going to introduce you to a character that nobody knows is in the movie,” he said. That character is Korg, a giant rock man who featured prominently in the “Planet Hulk” comic book arc that “Thor: Ragnarok” borrows from. Fighting alongside Korg is his sidekick, Miek, who is a larva inside of a robotic exo-skeleton suit. It’s honestly one of the weirdest things you’ve ever seen and a huge departure from the character, who is way more insect-like in the comics. (As if anyone thought Waititi was going to follow anything verbatim.)

We got to watch a sequence where Thor (Chris Hemsworth) is talking to Korg before entering the gladiatorial arena that you see at the end of the teaser trailer. Korg is tall and craggy but speaks in a lilting New Zealand accent. He tells Thor that he was banished because, “I tried to start a revolution but didn’t print enough pamphlets.” The two characters walk for a while before Korg admits that the hallway is just a circle. Afterwards Taika, who also voices the character and provided the motion capture, says that he based the character on “Polynesian nightclub bouncers,” people that had the most genial-sounding voice but you really don’t want to mess with. (He didn’t use the word mess.) His goal was to turn this hulking brute into “the most lovable character in the film.” Based on the footage I saw, that seems like a pretty achievable goal. Finally we went into the main theater on the ground level and watched visual effects dailies from “Spider-Man: Homecoming” and the aforementioned “Black Panther” stuff. Visual effects dailies are when they review shots from various effects houses (there were at least a half dozen effects houses credited with the Spider-Man work, including Sony Pictures ImageWorks). Most of these shots were just a few seconds long and many took place in sequences already teased in the trailer — Spider-Man foiling bank robbers dressed as the Avengers, him climbing to the top of the Washington Monument. We did see a really impressive long shot of him putting on his suit in an alleyway, presumably coming home from school. It’s unbroken, tracking through the alley, as he puts on the suit that is, at first, pretty baggy and then snugly fitted to his body. A producer noted that the size of a rat that scampers away will be bigger and there’s still discussion as to how disgusting to make a bag of trash that opens once he web-shoots his bag to the side of the bin. “If we add in some sound effects we can make it really gross,” the producer says cheerfully.

Other shots that we saw included a shot with Shocker (Bokeem Woodbine), a moment where Vulture (Michael Keaton) sits crouched on a building looking like a looming gargoyle (mirroring a piece of artwork we saw earlier), and, maybe most tantalizingly, Donald Glover playing a heretofore-undisclosed character being handed a glove made from a piece of a discarded Ultron robot by one of Vulture’s gang. It still doesn’t answer who he’s playing, exactly, but at least we can definitively say he’s not Miles Morales. So there’s that.

After our tour we walked across the lot to the main theater and watched a little film called “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.” I can’t say much more (embargoed!) but just know that the smile that was plastered across my face during the open house didn’t leave for the rest of the night.

  • ‘Black Panther’ Cast Does the ‘Get Out’ Challenge

When the cast of “Black Panther” includes “Get Out” star Daniel Kaluuya, you know his co-stars are going to have some fun with his role in the hit horror film.

Lupita Nyong’o shared an Instagram video from the “Black Panther” set, where the cast runs towards the camera a la Marcus Henderson‘s now-famous run in “Get Out.”

“The Ultimate #getoutchallenge is when #danielkaluuya is down to play” Nyong’o wrote.

In the short clip, Kaluuya looks up from his phone to see the entire cast running towards him before the camera falls to the ground. “F– this,” he says before walking away.

The cast of “Black Panther” includes Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, “The Walking Dead’s” Danai Gurira, and “This Is Us” star Sterling K. Brown. The movie opens February 16, 2018.

  • ‘Walking Dead’ Star Danai Gurira Joins ‘Black Panther’ Cast

Marvel Studios Hall H PanelThe “Black Panther” cast made its official debut at Comic-Con this weekend, and while some casting announcements were confirmed (the previously-reported additions of Michael B. Jordan and Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o), there was one exciting new name among the ensemble.

Danai Gurira, who plays katana-wielding Michonne on “The Walking Dead,” will tackle yet another comic series — and badass character — as a member of the “Black Panther” team. The actress will be playing Okoye in the flick, the leader of a fierce, all-female group of warriors known as the Dora Milaje, who protect the Wakanda realm and guard king T’Challa (a.k.a. Black Panther, played by Chadwick Boseman). Sounds like the perfect fit for Gurira.

Along with Gurira, Nyong’o will also be playing a member of the Dora Milaje, a character named Nakia who serves as a love interest for T’Challa — and later, a villain named Malice — in the comics. The actresses are reuniting on the Marvel flick after collaborating together on the play “Eclipsed,” which Gurira wrote, and which netted six Tony nominations earlier this year.

Also confirmed for “Black Panther” was Jordan’s role, which was revealed to be Erik Killmonger, a fighter and foe of Black Panther’s who serves as the villain.

“Black Panther” begins production in January. It’s slated for release on February 16, 2018.
