‘Black Mirror’ Season 7 receives 8 out of 10 stars.

Returning to Netflix on April 10th for a seventh season of anthology tales blending techno-terror with emotion, ‘Black Mirror’ proves it still has what it counts as the modern-day equivalent of ‘The Outer Limits’ or ‘The Twilight Zone.’

And this time, with six episodes in play, there is a greater scope for stories to be told compared to some of the more compacted recent seasons. It’s also reassuring that, after some slightly less effective entries, the seventh season finds the show handily back on form.

Does ‘Black Mirror’ Season 7 reflect well on the series?

‘Black Mirror’ has always been about more than simply darkly shaded warnings about the use (and mis-use of technology); it’s about humans and how we interact, also. Season 7 definitely lives up to that aim, offering some persuasive tales of those whose lives are impacted by innovations in medical science or tech in general.

It’s also welcome to see the series following up on a couple of popular episodes –– while the sequel to ‘USS Callister’ doesn’t have the sting of the original, for example, it expands it in interesting ways and deepens one of the characters in the process.

    Script and Direction

Charlie Brooker, the show’s co-creator, once again leads the writing team here, working alongside the likes of Bisha K. Ali, Ella Road, William Bridges, and Bekka Bowling to put out more gripping tales. A highlight of the writing this time in the first entry, ‘Common People,’ with its spin on ever-changing subscription services this time applied to live-saving medical treatment. It’s emotional and thorough, and heartbreaking when needed.

On a more darkly funny level is ‘Bête Noire,’ with its vengeful story of old resentments curdled into fresh vengeance. We won’t reveal exactly what is going on, but the answer is a fun one.

Directing wise, it’s reassuring to see such filmmakers as David Slade and Toby Hynes brought back to handle the two episodes –– ‘Plaything’ and ‘USS Callister: Into Infinity’ that call back to their previous work.

All in all, though, the direction is superb –– stylish when required, subtle at other times.

As has become commonplace for ‘Black Mirror,’ Season 7 boasts a quality ensemble for its various stories.

Chris O’Dowd and Rashida Jones are at the heart of ‘Common People’ and put in turns that are funny, real and packed full of feeling, but not forgetting Tracee Ellis Ross as their company rep, who keeps pushing new updates with a smile, even when the couple struggle to keep up financially.

‘Hotel Reverie’ blends classic Hollywood with high-tech and features lovely work from Emma Corrin and Issa Rae, with fine support from Awkwafina and Harriet Walter.

‘Plaything’ hinges on the intense energy of Peter Capaldi, who really sells the focus of a man on a mission, but kudos also to Lewis Gribben, who plays the same character 40 years earlier.

‘Eulogy’ boasts excellent work from Paul Giamatti as a man haunted by grief and memory (literally in this case) and grapples with tough truths about his past.

And ‘USS Callister: Into Infinity’ of course re-introduces us to the brave, digi-DNA copies of the crew (and their human counterparts), with Cristin Milioti, Jimmi Simpson and Jesse Plemons all fantastic returning to their roles.

    Final Thoughts

While it has the usual highs and lows as in any ‘Black Mirror’ season, the highs far outweigh the lows, and for every episode that doesn’t shine as brightly (‘Bête Noire’ is a fun concept but doesn’t totally deliver), there is a wonderful show waiting to be injected into your eyes.

Oh, and fans of the series will want to be on the lookout for a recurring motif; let’s just say it starts with the letter “J”…

What’s the story of ‘Black Mirror’ Season 7?

The six-episode season of ‘Black Mirror’ features the following stories…

‘Common People’: When a medical emergency leaves schoolteacher Amanda fighting for her life, her desperate husband Mike signs her up for Rivermind, a high-tech system that will keep her alive –– but at a cost…

‘Bête Noire’: Confectionary whizz kid Maria is unnerved when her former schoolmate Verity joins the company she works at — because there’s something altogether odd about Verity, something only Maria seems to notice…

‘Hotel Reverie’: A high-tech, unusually immersive remake of a vintage British film sends Hollywood A-list star Brandy Friday into another dimension, where she must stick to the script if she ever wants to make it home.

‘Plaything’: In a near-future London, an eccentric murder suspect is linked to an unusual video game from the 1990s — a game populated by cute, evolving artificial lifeforms.

‘Eulogy’: An isolated man is introduced to a groundbreaking system that allows its users to literally step inside old photographs — stirring powerful emotions in the process.

‘USS Callister: Into Infinity’: Robert Daly is dead, but now the crew of the USS Callister –– led by Captain Nanette Cole –– are stranded in an infinite virtual universe, fighting for survival against 30 million players.

Miley Cyrus Performed as ‘Black Mirror’ Character Ashley O at Glastonbury Festival

    Netflix

Ashley O just keeps coming back.

Miley Cyrus surprised fans at the Glastonbury Festival in  England over the weekend by taking the stage as her “Black Mirror” character. The singer-actress played the pop star in the Series 5 episode “Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too,” and then released a music video she’d filmed for the show. This time, Ashley O made her triumphant return live as Cyrus performed “On a Roll” in the character’s recognizable lavender wig.

BBC Radio 1 shared a clip via Twitter after the fact and highlighted what a fun surprise it was:

Surprise or not, the stunt was fitting. Cyrus’s big break was on the Disney Channel TV series “Hannah Montana,” and she regularly performed as her TV character. By now, she must be used to alter egos and wigs.

The singer had even more in store for Glastonbury attendees. She also brought out her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, and Lil Nas X to perform “Old Town Road,” as EW reports. What a day for everyone — including Ashley O.

“Black Mirror” pop star Ashley O is back.

Netflix had a surprise in store for fans after Miley Cyrus guest starred in the Series 5: a full music video starring her pop star character, Ashley O. The episode, “Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too,” features Cyrus as a singer who is unhappy with her image and secretly writes darker music. Her music video is for the song “On a Roll,” a catchy, upbeat pop tune in line with Ashley O’s public persona.

“On a Roll” was briefly a part of Cyrus’s episode, and the video can be now seen in its full glory. Cyrus performs entirely in character, as you’ll see below.

Word of Cyrus’s guest role in “Black Mirror” Season 5 came at the end of last year, prompting the singer-slash-actress to confirm it (but also not) in December. As we know now, she definitely appeared on the show, even traveling to South Africa for the gig.

“Black Mirror” Series 5 premiered earlier in June, so it’s finally all out there, music video included.

“Black Mirror” will be back to haunt you with technological nightmares sooner than expected.

Netflix revealed the release date of Season 5: June 5. The streaming service also unveiled the first trailer, which features Miley Cyrus, Anthony Mackie, Andrew Scott, Topher Grace, and more stars.

Season 5 is comprised of just three episodes — harkening back to the early seasons when the sci-fi anthology drama aired in the U.K.It’s unknown how long each of the three episodes will be, nor their titles.

As usual, the show will explore how technology affects society. The trailer teases one story about “one future we should have seen coming.” There are glimpses of an Alexa-like doll, a live-cast mental breakdown, and Cyrus as a futuristic pop star.

Netflix’s ‘Black Mirror: Bandersnatch’ Targeted in Lawsuit Over ‘Choose Your Own Adventure’ Trademark

    Netflix

    Guilty or not guilty?

Netflix is facing both outcomes after its recent movie, “Black Mirror: Bandersnatch,” triggered a lawsuit from Chooseco, LLC, the childrens’ book publisher that owns the trademark to “Choose Your Own Adventure.”

A complaint was filed in Vermont federal court Friday that alleges that Netflix has benefited from associating with the iconic brand and that “Bandersnatch” has been widely connected to the trademark phrase “Choose Your Own Adventure.”

Chooseco has been using the mark since the 1980s and has sold more than 265 million copies of its Choose Your Own Adventure books.

The company says 20th Century Fox currently holds the option to develop an interactive series based on the Choose Your Own Adventure series. The lawsuit alleges that Netflix has been actively pursuing a license since 206.

“Chooseco and Netflix engaged in extensive negotiations that were ongoing for a number of years, but Netflix did not receive a license,” the complaint states. “On at least one occasion before the release of Bandersnatch, Chooseco sent a written cease and desist request to Netflix asking Netflix to stop using the CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE mark in connection with its marketing efforts for another television program.”

In the complaint, Chooseco notes that in one scene, the protagonist Stefan Butler refers to the fictional novel that he’s adapting into a video game as a “Choose Your Own Adventure book.”

Netflix has not made a public response. But the streaming service itself has avoided using the phrase “Choose Your Own Adventure” in advertising “Bandersnatch.”

Chooseco is demanding at least $25 million in damages.

Miley Cyrus Sort of Confirmed She’ll Guest Star in ‘Black Mirror’ Season 5

    Miley Cyrus on The Voice
    NBC

“Black Mirror” is full of mystery, and so is potential guest star Miley Cyrus.

The singer-slash-actress recently addressed the recent rumors that she has a guest spot in the fifth season of the Netflix sci-fi series, and she wasn’t exactly straightforward in her answer. As guest on SiriusXM’s “The Howard Stern Show” on Wednesday, Dec. 12, she both confirmed and denied that she confirmed her involvement, per THR.

Cryus’s older sister, Brandi, mentioned the “Black Mirror” gig in a podcast episode Tuesday, as EW reports. She was talking about how they’d both traveled to South Africa and said that Cyrus was there for a role. When talking to Stern, the “Nothing Breaks Like a Heart” singer did open up about the work that she did, but she was reluctant to outright confirm it because she wasn’t sure if she was allowed to.

“If you guess it, then I will shake my head ‘yes,’ or ‘no,’” Cyrus told Stern, per THR.

She did indeed nod her head yes, according to Stern, but Cyrus pointed out that she hadn’t said the show’s name. Still, she revealed that her character has “lot of different sides,” which definitely sounds about right for “Black Mirror.” She added that she left “feeling really proud” of her work, which she noted was unusual.

The actress, who gained fame as a preteen on the Disney Channel TV series “Hannah Montana” and has done a variety of films since, has been more focused on music than acting in recent years. Her most recent major acting role on a TV show was in the 2016 Amazon Studios miniseries “Crisis in Six Scenes.” She has, however, been a judge on NBC’s reality singing competition show “The Voice” in recent years.

Netflix declined to comment on Cyrus’s guest role, but we expect to learn more about it in the coming months.

Netflix May Have Accidentally Revealed ‘Black Mirror’ Season 5 Release Date

    Netflix

The upcoming fifth season of Netflix sci-fi series “Black Mirror” may be hitting the streaming service very, very soon — and it also has an official subtitle.

That’s what fans have gathered from a since-deleted tweet from one of Netflix’s many official Twitter accounts, which shared a bunch of release dates for new sci-fi, superhero, and fantasy content due to debut soon. In an image briefly shared by @NXOnNetflix, a list of new titles — and one in particular — caught audiences’ eyes.

    Netflix via SlashFilm

It looks like season five of “Black Mirror” will be known as “Black Mirror: Bandersnatch,” and it will premiere on December 28. Or perhaps this is merely the first episode of season five (hence the subtitle), with additional episodes rolling out at a later date. Whatever the timeframe, the image was only up for a few minutes before being deleted, suggesting that this is indeed a legit title and release date.

Slash Film did some digging to uncover additional details about the “Bandersnatch” moniker, reporting that fans pieced together clues about the title that point to a real-life 1980s UK video game with that name, which was never finished. And apparently, the game was also referenced way back in season three of “Black Mirror.” So that makes it even more likely that this title is the real deal.

We already know that the show is set to tackle the world of interactive storytelling this season, and “Bandersnatch” seems like a natural way in to that. We’ll keep our fingers crossed that Netflix will reveal more concrete details about the new episode(s) soon.

  • ‘Black Mirror’ Season 5 Reportedly Arriving December With Interactive Episode

‘Black Mirror’ Season 5 Reportedly Arriving December With Interactive Episode

    Black Mirror
    Netflix

Never mind “exit game” — get ready to enter the game yourself.

A new report in Bloomberg has some juicy details about Netflix’s “Black Mirror” Season 5, which started production earlier this year.

First of all, they said Netflix is developing a series of interactive specials allowing viewers to choose the next storylines. An insider said the company expected to release the first of those projects by the end of this year.

The first may be in “Black Mirror” itself.

Here’s what Bloomberg added specifically about “Black Mirror” Season 5:

“Viewers will get to choose their own storylines in one episode of the upcoming season of “Black Mirror,’ the Emmy-winning science-fiction anthology series. The show is famous for exploring the social implications of technology, including an episode where humans jockey to receive higher ratings from their peers. The fifth season of the show is expected to be released in December.”

Expected in December. Not confirmed by Netflix or anyone else. But it would be very exciting to continue the tradition of new seasons arriving in December as binge-worthy holiday gifts.

Bloomberg added that the “Black Mirror” episode “is the first of several experiments with live-action interactive programming for Netflix, and the first interactive show designed for adult viewers.”

No further details yet. It’s possible — maybe even preferable — that no further details will be shared until the “Black Mirror” episode in question arrives.

The past two seasons of “Black Mirror” won Emmys for Outstanding Television Movie — “San Junipero” in Season 3, and “USS Callister” in Season 4. Both of those episodes also won Outstanding Writing for a Limited Series, Movie, or Dramatic Special. If Season 5 does stream in December, we won’t be shocked to see one of those episodes also pick up some Emmys this time next year.

  • Harry Potter Celebration: Tonks is Woke AF

During the recent Harry Potter Celebration at Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida, we got to spend some exclusive time with some of the stars of the franchise. And during a press conference, one thing became abundantly clear: Natalia Tena, who plays Nymphadora Tonks in “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix,” “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” and both parts of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” is woke AF.

Tena, who also essayed memorable roles on “Game of Thrones” (she was wildling Osha) and the “Black Mirror” Christmas special, was outspoken during the special conference, repeatedly saying things that would make the outspoken J.K. Rowling very proud indeed.

When someone asked the assembled cast members if they had any advice for up-and-coming performers, Tena very matter-of-factly said, “Have a plan B.” She then added: “And if you’re a woman, have a plan B, C, the whole alphabet.”

Later on during the conference Tena, after disclosing her passionate love of comic books (she’s a big fan of Garth Ennis, particularly “Preacher” and “The Boys”) and suggesting that her favorite emoji is an emoji we’re not even sure exists (a wolf emoji?), someone else asked her what she would use magic for.

After thinking about it for a minute, she said she’d probably access the Wizarding World for, “A potion to stop sexism.” For such a lighthearted event, aimed at celebrating a franchise epitomized by its fanciful escapism, it was Tena who fearlessly access the plight of modern society. She managed to make the topic accessible and impactful. Some would say it was downright magical.
