  • Aerosmith Influenced Johnny Depp’s Accent in ‘Black Mass’

Walk this way, talk this way! There’s a little bit of Aersomith in James “Whitey” Bulger — at least there is in the movie depicting his life.

In “Black Mass,” Johnny Depp plays Bulger, the legendary Boston gangster. In doing so, he had to have an authentic Boston accent, something he didn’t have, so he turned to an old pal.

“It’s a tough one,” he told Jimmy Kimmel on Thursday of having a proper accent. “Prior to going to Boston I spent a lot of time with one of my all time guitar hero’s Joe Perry from Aerosmith. So, Joe’s got a pretty thick Boston accent, so I just sponged it.”

There’s already Oscar buzz surrounding Depp for his portrayal of the violent kingpin who was eventually caught in Santa Monica, Calif. after 16 years on the run. Depp, for the record, has been nominated for three Oscars before, but has never won. It’s likely he’s never seen the actors in the films that beat him either, since he rarely watches films, including his own.

    Until now.

“I broke my rule,” he told the late night host. “In Venice we showed [“Black Mass’] at the festival there. The lights went down and I told the director, who’s just to my right, and I said, ‘Listen, I’m skipping out. I can’t do it.’ He said, ‘Please, please, watch the film.’ So I sat there hyperventilating and watched, and it’s a beautifully made film, and there’s a lot of great actors in there.”

  • Is ‘Black Mass’ Johnny Depp’s Next Chance at an Oscar? The Critics Weigh In

Johnny Depp is back in favor with critics.

After a disastrous string of flops in “Mortdecai,” last year’s “Transcendence” and 2013’s “The Lone Ranger,” his latest performance as a greyed FBI informant in “Black Mass” won praise Friday after debuting at the Venice Film Festival.

In the biopic, the hunky star makes a transformative appearance as Whitey Bulger, a balding, iced-blue-eyed mobster who is now incarcerated for life on charges connected to 19 murders, among other crimes.

It’s an unhinged turn for Depp, who scored his first Oscar nod for 2003’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl,” in what’s being hailed by some critics as the best role of his career.

And it seems the ship has not yet sailed on his chances at nabbing a golden statue.

“After too many Caribbean vacations, Johnny Depp finally gets back down to some serious business in ‘Black Mass,’… Depp’s instinct for observing, underplaying and keeping things in, then letting it all out when required, pays big dividends here … it’s unexpected, very welcome at this point in his career, and one of his best.” -Todd McCarthy, The Hollywood Reporter

“Depp more than rises to the occasion, doing career-best work as a man who might easily have been played for ghoulish caricature (a la Jack Nicholson in ‘The Departed’), but instead emerges as a complex, undeniably charismatic figure who draws other criminals and lawmen alike into his cult of sociopathic personality…the actor playing Bulger embodies the role, or rather disappears into it…” –Scott Foundas, Variety

But for some who see Depp plastered in prosthetics, looking uncharacteristically like himself, it’s a bit of history repeating.

“Depp is in good, wily form as Bulger, underplaying even the man’s most violent outbursts with a low vocal burr that at times seems indebted to Jack Nicholson. But it’s a role of pretty pinched dramatic range, and while Depp hits its required note of icily implacable menace with film-serving consistency, he’s been more suggestive and expressive in other parts — even ones where he’s been as heavily caked in makeup. (One might say that ‘Black Mass’ shows us Depp as we’ve never seen him before, but that goes for rather a lot of his performances.)” –Guy Lodge, Variety

  • Johnny Depp Is Scary as Hell in New ‘Black Mass’ Trailer

Black MassWho’s worse: a violent, cutthroat gangster — or the law enforcement that lets him get away with murder?

That’s the set-up of the new trailer for “Black Mass,” the movie about notorious crime boss Whitey Bulger (Johnny Depp). The first teaser was all about Depp — gunning down people, menacing others, and generally being a badass gangster.

This one gives us more of the plot: Whitey rises to power in South Boston, thanks to friends in the right places — including his brother, Billy (Benedict Cumberbatch), who’s a star politician. His biggest ally is FBI Agent John Connelly (Joel Edgerton), who looks the other way on Whitey’s criminal activities.

    Watch the trailer.

“How come no one has nailed Whitey Bulger?” wonders Assistant U.S. Attorney Fred Wyshak (Corey Stoll). When Connelly brushes him off, asking what Bulger has done, an incredulous Wyshak replies, “Everything!”

This new trailer shows us more of the other, non-Depp players in “Black Mass,” and they all look good, from Cumberbatch and Stoll to Jesse Plemons and Dakota Johnson. But this is Depp’s movie, and as in the first teaser, he looks incredible. He’s unrecognizable, which is a very good thing. Depp’s become a caricature of himself in recent year, and this could be the performance to bring him back into critical acclaim and awards contention.

“Black Mass” opens in theaters September 18.

  • New ‘Black Mass’ Trailer Is Surprisingly Funny, But Does It Glorify Whitey Bulger?

The first trailer for “Black Mass” revealed the danger of sharing family recipes, and the second trailer — released over Memorial Day weekend — showcases Johnny Depp‘s Whitey Bulger making more speeches, killing more people, and charming at least one old lady.

This time, Bulger shares some not-so-wise advice for his son: “It’s not what you do, it’s when and where you do it, and who you do it to or with. If nobody sees it, it didn’t happen.” Dakota Johnson’s Lindsey Cyr responds, “Jimmy, he’s 6. You really think that’s the best thing to be telling a kid?” Bulger’s response: “Yeah.”

Yeah, best to learn early not to get caught. The rest of the trailer is mostly filled with action shots, typical gangster stuff — guns, money, club scene — set to the song “The Devil Is a Lie” by Rick Ross featuring Jay Z, and punctuated by the reminder that this is about “The. Most. Feared. The. Most. Wanted. The. Most. Notorious. Gangster in U.S. History.” Check it out:

They’re definitely going out of their way to make sure we know it’s cool and badass to be a gangster, even beyond casting Johnny Depp — made less attractive by hair and makeup, but still Johnny Depp — as the real-life South Boston criminal. The objective may not be to glorify Bulger, but it’s hard to argue that the trailer doesn’t sell him as a fascinating character while selling Depp as an Oscar contender.

The quip with the kid, and the scene at the end with the old lady, hint to a good amount of humor in the movie. (More shades of Jack Nicholson in “The Departed.”) So far we’re still only getting quick flashes of the supporting cast, including Benedict Cumberbatch, Peter Sasgaard, Joel Edgerton, etc. The trailers focus on Depp, who may indeed get himself awards for this, if he can convincingly portray Bulger and not just distract viewers with his jarring transformation. Those eyes!

“Black Mass” is scheduled for release on September 18.
