    lGzw0xRV

Opening in theaters and On Demand February 27th is the new sci-fi thriller ‘Parallel,’ which was written, produced and stars Aldis Hodge (‘Black Adam’) and his brother Edwin Hodge (‘Bumblebee’). The film also stars Danielle Deadwyler (‘Till’) and was directed by Kourosh Ahari (‘The Night’).

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with Aldis Hodge about his work on ‘Parallel,’ developing the screenplay, creating a realistic multiverse, playing multiple versions of his character, working with his brother, and Danielle Deadwyler’s strong performance.

The actor also discussed his possible future in James Gunn’s new DC Universe, confirmed that he is not in talks to play Green Lantern John Stewart, and looks back at playing Hawkman in ‘Black Adam.’

Moviefone: To begin with, can you talk about developing the screenplay, the themes you wanted to explore, and creating a realistic multiverse?

Aldis Hodge: It’s weird, we didn’t even think about the term multiverse, and now, it’s becoming more and more apparent to me that that’s exactly what we were doing. We were just working based off the original film ‘Parallel Forest,’ the Chinese version that we saw, that we were inspired by, and it really came down to the complexities of the relationships. The way they approached it in the original film, I think that they had a genius approach to the emotional depth and subtleties there. We just wanted to do our version of that, but in a way, something that paid homage, or honored the original film, and how it inspired us. The film was brought to my brother and I by Jaylen Moore, from Rumble Riot. Jaylen is a good buddy of ours, and he brought us a really great opportunity, then introduced us to Jonathon Keasey, who was another writer on the project. My brother and I, we got up and we talked to John, and the process between my brother and I, going back and forth, was easy. We know how we work; we just want to get the job done. We had the same goal, the same intention moving forward with this project. Anytime you’re working on anything with anybody, if it’s your family, your partner, your business partners, if everybody has the same goal in mind, everybody has a different route to get there, but if you have the same goal in mind, you’re going to get there. Where my brother had a different approach to certain things, that opened my mind to being able to see different options, and where I had a different approach to certain things, that opened his mind, and we just complimented each other on the journey. I call this a great education. This was school for us, and it was wonderful.

MF: What was it like for you to get write, produce and act in this project with your brother and really share this experience with him?

AH: This was our first time as writers and producers, but we’ve acted together in many projects before, from ‘Sesame Street,’ when we were kids, to ‘Die Hard with a Vengeance,’ to ‘Big Momma’s House.’ We’ve done ‘Showboat,’ we did a run of ‘Showboat’ on Broadway for a long time together. We’re used to working with each other, and we’ve always been looking forward to getting an opportunity to work together again. Here, we just learned a lot on the producing side, how to manage a team, how to really stay in your lane, and figure out how to get people to understand how to approach you, and how to see you. For us, that was the new experience, where we were learning together, and we would go home and just talk about it. We’d talk about the day, and figure out, “All right, this didn’t go so well over here. How do we want to attack that tomorrow? This went right, and how do we keep it going well?” It was constant check-ins, and making sure that we were up to date on everything that we needed to get done.

MF: Can you talk about the first version of Alex that we see in this movie, his relationship with his wife Vanessa, and how he is dealing with her grief?

AH: Alex number one? I don’t want to give away the cookies, but he is a grieving husband. Him and his wife are dealing with a situation they can’t control. He doesn’t really know how to deal with her, or handle her on it, so he’s just trying to figure it out. He’s at a loss as well, and he is hurting in a way where he needs somebody to be there for him, but he needs to be there for somebody else, and he must figure out what that balance is. He’s going through it, but the relationship between him and Vanessa is very much layered. It’s not easy, because there’s a lot of doubt, a lot of blame, a lot of guilt that they’re dealing with as husband and wife, and they don’t know how to get back to being husband and wife. They’re lost in their grief, and it becomes suffocating.

    Danielle Deadwyler in 'Parallel.'
Danielle Deadwyler in ‘Parallel.’ Photo: Vertical Entertainment.

MF: What was it like working with Danielle Deadwyler and building that relationship with her?

AH: She’s amazing, man. I keep repeating myself, but she was a gift, and she blessed us with her gifts, and I’m just so grateful. For my brother and I’s first time out, venturing into this space, rookies, we couldn’t have gotten luckier having somebody with this talent of this magnitude, and being able to come with so much humility, grace, poise, and just kindness. She’s a sweet person, a sweetheart, and she just also happens to be very brilliant at what she does, so we were very lucky. She’s a rockstar, you know what I mean? Again, we got lucky.

MF: Can you talk about the challenges of playing multiple versions of the same character, and was there one version that you really enjoyed playing?

AH: That is the challenge, and that’s the thing that drew me to it. That’s the biggest opportunity presented as an actor, from just that isolated lane, being able to figure out how to, in the same space, in the same film, make these several different people, and make them as obviously different as possible. That’s really where the fun lies, because for me, I just chose different emotional groups, and applied them to different versions, to say, “You represent this, and you represent that.” It was the easiest way, because I’m not going to lie, there were some days where I’ll be on set, and I’d get confused. I’m like, “Which version am I playing now?” Someone is like, “Didn’t you write it?” I’m like, “Yeah, I wrote it, but don’t worry about it. Help me figure it out.” I wanted to make sure that I got that right, because just in my career, that’s always been something that I aim for. To play a bunch of different roles as varied and vast as possible and have such a body of work that is just so diverse it cannot be compared or quantified in any similar space, and this is as obvious of an opportunity, and a challenge to do so. I was happy about that. I didn’t have a favorite, but the idea of Alex is just my favorite because the thing that I loved about this was playing the differences, being able to challenge myself with having to be as familiar and equally unique in the same space as possible. I look at films as opportunities to go to the gym, flex my muscles a little bit, and to work out. For this film, what I was trying to work out, or work on was, how sharp and distinct can I be when it comes to really trying to build out this whole person? Usually, you’re on set, you only must worry about playing one person. Even if they’re pretending to be somebody else, it’s still the same person. You only must worry about one perspective. This one, you have a few very different versions, with very different perspectives, and I just wanted to make sure I hit that as much as possible. It’s really the whole idea of Alex that is my favorite.

MF: Recently there was an online rumor that you might play Green Lantern John Stewart in the new DCU. Is that true? Have you had any talks with James Gunn or DC Studios about it, and would that mean that you won’t return as Hawkman?

AH: I want to set the record straight. I was doing an interview, and someone asked me about my future in DC. I told them, I don’t know, because that’s above my pay grade. They asked me if I wasn’t coming back to reprise my role as Hawkman, is there anybody else I’d want to be? “What about John Stewart?” I said, well, I’ve been voicing John Stewart in the animated space for a few years now. I always had an affinity for that character, and I think that would be cool, but I’m not having conversations about it. Someone asked me, and I just said, yeah, that would be a cool idea. If that was on their mind, and they picked up the phone, I’d be open to it. Again, that’s above my pay grade. You’re going to have to go talk to DC about that. Ain’t nobody called me about nothing, so we can calm that chatter right there.

MF: Finally, looking back at your role as Hawkman in ‘Black Adam’ and making that movie, was it a positive experience for you personally?

AH: Honestly, it was one of the best sets I’ve ever worked on. The cast was incredible. I have so many great memories from that film, from that film family. Shout outs to everybody. Honestly, we had a great time. DJ (Dwayne Johnson) is great, him and his whole camp are great. I miss my people, from Noah (Centineo) to Quintessa (Swindell) to Mr. Pierce Brosnan, the coolest brother in the room, Mo (Mohammed Amer), and Sarah Shahi. Everybody was dope on that set. I’m happy that we got a chance to get at it, because it was one of the best experiences of my career.

    • Jaume Collet-Serra is on to direct a new action thriller called ‘Kate Warne’.
    • Emily Blunt is considering starring in the film as the title character, with Dwayne Johnson producing.
    • The script has been re-written but will still have to wait until the actors’ strike is over.

It looks like we have a ‘Jungle Cruise’ reunion in the works. No, the sequel has not chugged forward much given the dual strikes (though you can bet Disney will be looking to move this one along now that at least the writers’ action is over).

Instead, ‘Cruise’ director Jaume Collet-Serra is boarding the in-development detective thriller ‘Kate Warne’, which is being produced by Dwayne Johnson (who, of course, starred in the Disney ride adaptation).

And the ‘Jungle’ connections continue as Emily Blunt has been considering starring in this one for a couple of years now –– she was first mentioned as circling back in 2021 –– but, as Deadline reminds us, the actors are still on strike, so she has yet to make a formal acting deal.

She’ll be back to negotiating to star when the industrial action is over, but there is no sign of that just yet. Even if she doesn’t end up in the main role, she’s also a producer on the film, alongside Johnson’s Seven Bucks Productions.

The Amazon-owned MGM is hoping that with Collet-Serra’s attachment, it’ll move forward once anything can shoot.

What’s the story of ‘Kate Warne’?

Emily Blunt in 'The English' which premieres November 11th on Prime Video.
Emily Blunt in ‘The English’ which premieres November 11th on Prime Video.

‘Kate Warne’ is described as a propulsive action adventure built around Warne, a real life female Sherlock Holmes in a male dominated industry whose singular sleuthing skills paved the way for future women in law enforcement and forever changed how detective work was done.

Gustin Nash wrote the first draft of the script, but it has since seen a re-write (before the strike) with ‘Godmothered’s Melissa Stack taking over screenplay duties.

This feels more in Collet-Serra’s wheelhouse –– he’s been known for the likes of Liam Neeson thrillers ‘Non-Stop’, and ‘The Commuter’, while he last made ‘Black Adam’ with Johnson in the title role –– than even ‘Jungle Cruise’ though he’s proved to be adaptable through his career so far.

He’s also been behind movies such as horror pic ‘Orphan’ and shark thriller ‘The Shallows’.

Next up for the director is ‘Carry On’, which sees Taron Egerton as Ethan Kopek, a young TSA agent who is blackmailed by a mysterious traveler to allow a dangerous package through security and on to a Christmas Day flight.

The cast for that thriller also includes Logan Marshall-Green, Jason Bateman, Sofia Carson, Dean Norris and Josh Brener.

When Kevin Hart and Dwayne Johnson get together you can usually expect two things –– plenty of friendly insults between the two and some candid moments.

Such was the case when Johnson guested on Hart’s Peacock show ‘Hart to Heart’, in which he has invited various people on to talk about their careers, their ambitions and more.

And in between the various funny jabs at each other, there was a chance for Johnson to open up about his disappointment around the character of Black Adam at DC.

The character, who was created for DC Comics as an antagonist for Shazam, has evolved since then on the page to become something of an antihero in his own right.

Cinematically, the plan had been for Adam to serve as a nemesis for Shazam (played on screen by Zachary Levi in two movies so far), but when Johnson became involved in 2014, he urged producers to take it in a different direction.

A movie based solely around Black Adam went into development but took years to come to fruition. And when it did, it arrived in a vortex of post-Covid box office issues and changing regimes at DC.

The movie opened to $67 million, the biggest launch for a Johnson solo movie (we’re not counting the ‘Fast & Furious’ movies he has appeared in) but couldn’t weather the current moviegoing climate and ended up topping out at $393.2 million worldwide –– a disappointment for a film that cost at least around $200 million to make, more to market and had been viewed as a franchise starter.

Johnson had intended to see the character build to a confrontation with Henry Cavill’s Superman, going to far as to have him cameo in a post-credits sting. But given the new broom approach taken by incoming DC Studios bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran, that isn’t in the cards right now.

Johnson posted about his disappointment on Twitter in December:

What did Dwayne Johnson say about ‘Black Adam’?

Talking with Hart, Johnson mentioned the shift in studio leadership that had torpedoed ‘Adam’s’ future:

“‘Black Adam’ got caught in a vortex of new leadership. It was so many changes in leadership. Anytime you have a company, a publicly traded company, and you have all those changes in leadership, you have people coming in who, creatively and fiscally, are going to make decisions that you may not agree with. It was like new ownership coming in and buying an NFL team and going, ‘Not my coach, not my quarterback.’ It doesn’t matter how many times you won the Super Bowl or how many rings you got; you’re going with somebody else.”

And despite its seeming failure at the box office, the star defended the movie:

“That will always be one of the biggest mysteries. You have the biggest opening of your career. Sure, no China, which could’ve been maybe 100 or 200 million more dollars. You have a superhero, and you want to grow out the franchise. You bring back Superman and Henry Cavill, which the world went crazy. And we created a diverse superhero portfolio, where we have just men and women of color in ‘Black Adam.’”

(L to R) Dwayne Johnson in ‘Black Adam’ and Zachary Levi in ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods.’

There are new revelations coming to light about what has been happening behind the scenes of DC movies. But before we go any further, we should specify that there are spoilers ahead for one of the end credits scenes of ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’.

According to various sources, Dwayne Johnson –– star, producer and PR figurehead behind the ‘Black Adam’ movie –– vetoed the appearance of ‘Adam’ characters from the Justice Society of America showing up at the end of the Zachary Levi-starring superhero sequel.

    e5CeRhENprv5jaw1iltuJ1

What was supposed to happen at the end of the ‘Shazam!’ sequel?

Here’s where we get into spoiler territory: in the first of two end credits scenes, Levi’s Shazam was supposed to be approached by Hawkman (Aldis Hodge) and at least one other member of the Justice Society to join their team.

In the final film, it’s actually Agent Emilia Harcourt (Jennifer Holland) and John Economos (Steve Agee) from ‘The Suicide Squad’ and ‘Peacemaker’ who show up to drop word that the Society wants Shazam. It’s a little more confusing, since that pair have nothing to do with the Justice Society, but the swap was necessary when the Rock blocked the original plan.

Director David F. Sandberg offered the first word on the change when talking to The Hollywood Reporter.

    Here’s what Sandberg said,

“There were supposed to be characters from the Justice Society, but that fell apart three days before we were going to roll cameras. So, Peter Safran, who produced this movie and ‘Peacemaker’, made some calls, and thankfully, Jen Holland and Steve Agee were able to come by on very short notice.”

The Wrap has since dug into the matter further, pushing the concept that Johnson was doing everything he could to promote ‘Black Adam’ at ‘Shazam’s cost.

It’s also worth noting that Levi posted the Wrap’s headline to an Instagram story with the caption “The truth shall set you free”.

Johnson, of course, was attached to the role of Black Adam for more than a decade before the movie actually arrived last year. While the original plan had been for the historic Shazam antagonist (who has moved closer to anti-hero status as the years have gone by) to show up as the villain in the first ‘Shazam!’ movie, Johnson pushed for him to get his own film.

And in advance of ‘Black Adam’, he began focusing more on the idea of Adam going up against Superman rather than Shazam, with Henry Cavill (who, when he was still scheduled to return as the character, showing up in a post-credits scene in ‘Black Adam).

Of course, all of that was planned before James Gunn and Peter Safran took over running the DC Studios arm of Warner Bros. Discovery and have largely decided to wipe the slate clean and start over. And it’s worth pointing out, before ‘Black Adam’ underperformed at the box office.

The studio is naturally hoping there will be less of this sort of chaos now that Gunn and Safran are on board and overseeing more of the connections between movies and characters, but time will tell.

  • Dwayne Johnson Talks Henry Cavill and DC

Dwayne Johnson arrives on the red carpet of the 95th Oscars® at the Dolby® Theatre at Ovation Hollywood on Sunday, March 12, 2023.
Dwayne Johnson arrives on the red carpet of the 95th Oscars® at the Dolby® Theatre at Ovation Hollywood on Sunday, March 12, 2023.

Last year, before ‘Black Adam’ arrived on screen, Dwayne Johnson was in typically bullish PR mode, extolling the virtue of the character. And shortly after it landed in theaters, he was also talking up the presence of Henry Cavill’s Superman (in a post-credits cameo that leaked before the film was released), signaling that it meant big things for the future of Warner Bros. Discovery’s DC Studios arm.

Unfortunately for Johnson, it didn’t work out that way for either Cavill or his own plans. Despite Cavill being given the greenlight to announce his return, a change at the top of DC Studios –– with filmmaker James Gunn and producer Peter Safran being installed as co-CEOS –– meant that there was a new plan going forward: Cavill was out as Supes and, at least according to Gunn’s initial plan, Black Adam was nowhere to be seen.

Of course, ‘Black Adam’ didn’t exactly soar at the box office –– it made $392 million worldwide, but that was off of a $195 million budget. And despite Johnson planting stories to suggest it would be profitable, the DC team hasn’t so far considered it a hit or worthy of future use.

    cAKImAUxggIpR5ZyKNuIz5

There were the initial, good-natured and curated responses from both sides –– “James Gunn and I connected, and Black Adam will not be in their first chapter of storytelling. However, DC and Seven Bucks have agreed to continue exploring the most valuable ways Black Adam can be utilized in future DC multiverse chapters,” said The Rock.

Now, though, in an Oscars red carpet interview with Variety ahead of him presenting Best Animated Feature, Johnson has opened up a little more about the change.

What did Dwayne Johnson say about the DC/Henry Cavill situation?

Here’s what Johnson had to say about the switch:

“It’s almost like when you have a pro football team and your quarterback wins championships and your head coach wins championships and then a new owner comes in and says, ‘Not my coach, not my quarterback. I’m going to go with somebody new.’ ”

The Rock also commented on the reception for ‘Black Adam’ itself, which was not as positive as he might have preferred:

“All that I can do, and all that we could do when we were making ‘Black Adam,’ was to put our best foot forward and surround ourselves with the best people and deliver the best movie we could. Our audience score was in the 90s. Critics took a couple shots, but that’s just the business of it.”

Which is not to say that Adam won’t one day be seen again, but it’s highly doubtful at this point. Gunn has his plans for DC, while Johnson has other franchises he can keep nurturing, including Netflix’s ‘Red Notice’ and a potential sequel to Disney’s ‘Jungle Cruise’. Next up for the actor/producer/tequila promoter, however, is Holiday adventure film ‘Red One’.

  • ‘Sex/Life’ Season 2: Sarah Shahi, Adam Demos and Margaret Odette

    oMuYwdBx

Premiering on Netflix March 2nd is the second season of the popular series ‘Sex/Life,’ which was created by Stacy Rukeyser (‘Unreal’).

What is the plot of ‘Sex/Life?’

‘Sex/Life’ is the story of a love triangle between a woman (Sarah Shahi), her husband (Mike Vogel), and her past that takes a provocative new look at female identity and desire.

Who is in the cast of ‘Sex/Life?’

‘Sex/Life’ stars Sarah Shahi (‘Black Adam‘) as Billie Connelly, Mike Vogel (‘Cloverfield’) as Cooper Connelly, Adam Demos (‘Falling Inn Love’) as Brad Simon, and Margaret Odette (‘The Independent’) as Sasha Snow.

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with Sarah Shahi, Adam Demos and Margaret Odette about their work on ‘Sex/Life,’ how their characters have changed, and what fans can expect from the second season of the popular Netflix series.

Margaret Odette, Sarah Shahi, and Adam Demos star in Netflix's 'Sex/Life' season 2.
(L to R) Margaret Odette, Sarah Shahi, and Adam Demos star in Netflix’s ‘Sex/Life’ season 2.

You can read the full interview below or click on the video player above to watch the interview.

Moviefone: Sarah, can you talk about where season one ended with Billie, and where we’ll find her when season two begins?

Sarah Shahi: So Billie says these three words, which indicate fornication and then season two begin. It basically starts off the moment those elevator doors close and we get to see what happens for her and Brad. It definitely takes a screeching halt, and then the rest of the season is what the season is.

MF: Billie is struggling with her own identity and striking a balance between the life she has and the life she wants. Can you talk about that?

SS: I think one of the important things about Billie is she’s a fantastic mother. One of the things that we saw last season is she was a wife and she was a mother, but she kept having all these other sides of herself that she just couldn’t let go of. She’s like, “Well, what happens to all these other desires and these wants that I have?” So this season, you see pretty quickly what happens to her that focuses her to be able to pay attention to herself.

Then the rest of the story she is with someone else, she is with another man. Through that relationship she’s able to fully actualize herself and how she balances all those things. Then it ends in a way, I think that people will be surprised and happy about.

MF: Adam, has Brad gotten over Billie?

Adam Demos: Never. It’ll never happen. He can try to move on and grow and start a different life, but no, he’ll never get over her. Whether they can be together is the question, but he’ll never be over her.

MF: Has he made a decision to move on?

AD: He’s made a decision. He does for his own sake. He can only sit around and wait for so long. But he’ll never get over it.

Margaret Odette as Sasha Snow in 'Sex/Life.'

MF: Margaret, it seems that Sasha has a love interest that is threatening her independence, can you talk about that?

Margaret Odette: 100% threatening her independence. She is really unmoored by that and really doesn’t know how to embrace this new identity that is forming vis-a-vis reconnecting with this love interest. So it’s terribly exciting to experience her twist and turn through that and have to redefine what it means to be this independent woman, this fierce woman. She has to discover and learn for herself that being independent doesn’t have to mean being alone. It doesn’t have to mean holding it all for yourself. It doesn’t have to mean having it all together all the time. So we really get to watch her go through that journey.

  • Netflix’s ‘The Recruit’ Interview: Noah Centineo

    ZqFNOOGE

Premiering on Netflix beginning December 16th is the new spy series ‘The Recruit,’ from series creator Alexi Hawley (‘The Rookie’).

The new series stars ‘Black Adam’ actor Noah Centineo as Owen Hendricks, a fledgling lawyer just starting a new job working for the CIA. Trouble begins when Owen encounters an asset named Max Maladze (Laura Haddock) demanding exoneration from the agency.

But when she tries to expose criminal members of the agency, Owen becomes entangled in convoluted international politics, and finds himself at odds with menacing individuals and groups, risking his life as he tries to fulfill his duties.

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with actor Noah Centineo about his work on ‘The Recruit,’ his character, what he learned about the CIA, and the show’s unique tone.

Noah Centineo stars in 'The Recruit.'
Noah Centineo stars in ‘The Recruit.’

You can read our full interview with Noah Centineo about ‘The Recruit’ below or click on the video player above to watch the interview.

Moviefone: To begin with, how is this series different than the projects that your fans are used to seeing you in?

Noah Centineo: Well, ‘The Recruit’ is different. It’s a spy genre. It’s older for sure. I’m not playing a high school student, so it’s different in that way. But it’s different from things that I’ve done in the past. It’s also different from any spy genre show or film that you’ve seen before.

In the way that that genre has been explored a hundred different ways and usually through the lens of an asset, a former asset, an operative, a CIA agent, a special agent, or even a lawyer. That’s been done before as well.

But this is the first time that I’ve seen that you’re following a young lawyer, his second day on the job, straight out of law school, falling into the world of the CIA. Falling into the world of dangerous missions and operations that threaten his life. That was really enticing to me.

The character, Owen Hendricks, who I play, he doubles down. He doesn’t back down in the face of adversity and life threatening problems at that. I think that’s great, super fun and engaging.

MF: Owen Hendricks is a lawyer, but he throws himself into a lot of dangerous situations without any sense of personal security. Can you talk about why he does that and what kind of backstory you gave yourself for the character?

NC: I mean, for the same reason that insurance companies don’t want to back young males that are under the age of 25. I think they’re just reckless at that age. I certainly was. He’s got this reckless abandonment for his own personal safety too because I think deep down, he’s an adrenaline junkie.

He’s thrill-seeking, but he also, I don’t know, I think he wants to do good work. He doesn’t quite understand the waters that he’s swimming in at first at all. For him, it’s very on the surface, it’s flashy, it’s the world of the CIA.

When he gets assigned the case of this Graymail case, he’s not thinking that it’s going to be dangerous. He joined the CIA as a lawyer because he thought it would be safe. But then he begins to find out very quickly that it is far from safe. He’s going to have to use all of the data he collects along this journey to stay alive.

Noah Centineo as Owen Hendricks in 'The Recruit.'

MF: The series balances action and comedy, but how would you describe the tone of the show?

NC: That’s Alexi Hawley, our showrunner and our writer. He has a unique ability to thread needles with tone. The tone in the first act is happy, you’re following this kid and he’s feeling great about his life and it’s kind of funny. Then suddenly he gets interrogated at a CIA black site and it gets really intense.

There you have the range of the show. It can get serious, suspenseful and dramatic, but it can also be very lighthearted and funny. There’s levity, there’s like a gallows humor, if you will, throughout the show. I love it. I think that’s something that Alexi does very uniquely.

MF: What kind of training or research did you do to prepare to play a CIA operative?

NC: I leaned on Alexi. He had many different people in the writer’s room, giving counsel and advisory. The show is also loosely inspired by someone named Adam Ciralsky, who’s a former attorney at the CIA. So, he was very gracious with his time as well, walking me through what it was like. What I learned and discovered about being a lawyer at the CIA, it’s a lot like the post office, but with secrets.

There’s a real corporate side to it and a tediousness to it. There’s a lot of paperwork involved. Yes, you get your hands dirty sometimes, but Owen definitely did not expect for his life to be at stake as often as it was during the show.

Noah Centineo as Owen Hendricks in 'The Recruit.'
Noah Centineo as Owen Hendricks in ‘The Recruit.’ Photo: Philippe Bossé/Netflix © 2022.

MF: Finally, Owen lives with two roommates. How do they feel about him working for the CIA?

NC: I’m happy you asked me that, and thank you for that because there is a dichotomy happening here of Owen being a young professional straight out of law school. That’s something that we haven’t seen in the spy genre before. We’ve seen the spy genre explored a hundred different ways, whether it’s an asset, a former asset, an operative, a special agent, even a lawyer.

But this is the first time that we’ve seen someone, their second day on the job living their first job as a lawyer at the CIA. That’s a unique lens. With him being so young, he’s got a home life. He’s got two different roommates so he can go from being interrogated at a CIA black site to be home and then be cuddled by his roommates because he just needs some human interaction.

They worry for him, of course, joining the CIA, because he thought it would be safe. I think they realize when he starts coming home later, days apart from when he left, that it becomes very serious. But he can’t talk about what he does. That’s also a very real thing, of course, for a lot of employees of the CIA.

  • Black Adam Not Part of DC’s Next Chapter

He might have used it as an ongoing refrain when ‘Black Adam’ was on its way and in theaters, but the hierarchy of power in the DC Universe has not exactly changed in Dwayne Johnson’s favor.

The Rock hit social media to admit that: “James Gunn and I connected, and Black Adam will not be in their first chapter of storytelling. However, DC and Seven Bucks have agreed to continue exploring the most valuable ways Black Adam can be utilized in future DC multiverse chapters.”

Which is not to say that there will never be another ‘Black Adam’ movie, but it won’t happen any time soon.

For his part, Gunn commented, “Love @TheRock & I’m always excited to see what he & Seven Bucks do next. Can’t wait to collaborate soon.” Again, which might be a diplomatic way to say that Black Adam is effectively dead at DC for now.

It’s somewhat of a blow for Johnson, who had championed making ‘Black Adam’ for nearly two decades, only for it to somewhat underperform at the box office. There had been recent reports that the movie would be headed for profitability, but they appeared to be largely placed by the superstar’s production company and new reporting from The Hollywood Reporter casts a less favorable light on the financials.

Though the movie apparently had a $190 million budget, that ballooned to $260 million after test screenings generated 20 days of additional photography and tinkering (Johnson had mentioned reshoots back before the movie came out). That also included adding Henry Cavill in a late-hour end credits cameo as Superman, though we all know that he’s not going to be in the DCU going forward.

And with more than $100 million in promotional costs, a $391 million global haul does not a happy studio accounting department make.

Johnson had been talking up development of a ‘Black Adam’ sequel and potential sequel for Aldis Hodge’s Hawkman character, but all that seems unlikely, at least for the foreseeable future.

Proof, then, that there are some things even the Rock can’t shoulder.

But what of the other side of the ‘Shazam’ spectrum (since Black Adam was created as villain for that character)?

With Cavill out and Gal Gadot and other actors’ status in DC’s future in a state of limbo, fans reached out to ‘Shazam!’s Zachary Levi, worried that he’s similarly headed for the super-unemployment line, even though sequel ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ is headed to theaters on March 17th.

Levi replied in typically whimsical style that he’s all “Gucci” (see the tweet below) but of course a lot might ride on how ‘Fury of the Gods’ performs.

We’ll still have to wait for Gunn and co-chief Peter Safran to announce their plans (they have a multi-year idea in play), but for now, DC’s immediate future includes ‘Fury of the Gods’, ‘The Flash’ (even with its attendant issues) on June 16th, ‘Blue Beetle’ on August 18th and the ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ on December 25th.

  • Henry Cavill Officially Returning as Superman

Henry Cavill Officially Returning as Superman.
Henry Cavill Officially Returning as Superman.

There has been much talk of Henry Cavill’s status as Clark Kent – AKA Krypton’s most famous son, Kal El AKA Superman – in recent years. Some has pointed to him being ditched from Warner Bros. DC Extended Universe film franchise altogether.

Then there were stories about him entering talks to return fully as Superman. It appears those particular stories were correct, as Cavill hit Instagram today to announce that he’ll officially be donning Supes’ unform again following… Well, that constitutes a big SPOILER ALERT, so please stop reading if you don’t want to know any more.

Henry Cavill as Superman in 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.'
Henry Cavill as Superman in ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.’

Still with us? Okay… Cavill has already made his return to the franchise via this weekend’s ‘Black Adam’ and a post-credit scene in which Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller threatens Dwayne Johnson’s title character with “people not from this planet” to keep him in line. “Send them all,” growls Adam, and there’s a sonic boom followed by a familiar figure descending from the sky. It’s Cavill’s Superman, looking more like the Christopher Reeve version than ever and with the John Williams theme to drive the point home.

“Black Adam,” he says. “We should talk.”

Cavill’s post doesn’t go into specifics beyond mentioning that we can expect a lot more from Superman going forward. We know that Johnson wants to see his Adam go up against Superman in future, and Warner Bros. does seem intent on figuring out a second ‘Man of Steel’ solo movie after Cavill made his debut in Zack Snyder’s 2013 outing.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/CkGjGIZL4rk/

Don’t expect (despite calls) for the Snyderverse to be restored, though – instead The Hollywood Reporter has heard that producer Charles Roven is spearheading the search for writers for that solo Supes movie, and that a director wish list is being drawn up, with Christopher McQuarrie. Which sounds great, but if they want to get moving, he’s unlikely to be available (let alone interested), since he’s too busy working with real-life man of steel Tom Cruise on the next two ‘Mission: Impossible’ movies and will have those on his plate until at least late 2023/early 2024 including post-production and promotional duties.

Still, at least it’s good news for fans of Cavill’s Superman, who have wanted to see him return to the role. With luck any new movie will allow him to channel the feel-good interpretation of the hero after the doomy vibes of ‘Steel’, ‘Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice’ and ‘Justice League’ (be it Whedon or Snyder cut). At least let the man smile! Cavill has bags of charm, and his Clark Kent could really use some of that energy.

So it appears there’s a little more stability in the chaotic DC universe, at least on the Superman front.
