CinemaCon 2026: Paramount Presentation
‘Street Fighter’ opens in theaters on October 16th.

- Paramount Pictures made its presentation to the 2026 CinemaCon crowd.
- Among the movies promoted were ‘Street Fighter’ and ‘Scary Movie’.
- There was also a look at a new ‘Christmas Carol’ adaptation.
Given the tumultuous behind-the-scenes business activity of first the Skydance/Paramount acquisition and now the combined studios’ ongoing mission to buy Warner Bros., it’s fair to wonder how much of that will be referenced at the company’s 2026 CinemaCon presentation.

But as is more likely, we’re expecting a focus on movies including the new ‘Scary Movie’ entry and a fresh take on the ‘Street Fighter’ video game.

Unlike some of its competition, Paramount doesn’t have many of its big hitter franchises with ready entries, though we’ll likely get something from the early 2027 arrival of the fourth ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ movie.

Following a looong sizzle reel (narrated by Tom Cruise and ending with him chilling out on the lot’s iconic water tower), freshly minted Paramount/Skydance boss David Ellison took the stage to enthuse about storytelling and –– cross it off your bingo card! –– further confirm that a merged Paramount and Warner Bros. would commit to 30 movies a year theatrically, with healthy 45-day release windows.

There was also a lot of chat about the IP-based movies they’re developing –– expect more ‘Star Trek’, ‘Transformers’, ‘World War Z’ and ‘Top Gun’, plus a ‘Call of Duty’ movie. Oh, and following the success of the first film via Neon, the studio is the new home of the ‘Longlegs’ franchise. And we also learned that classic antagonists Shredder and Kang will show up in the ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem’ sequel, due in 2027.

‘Sonic the Hedgehog 4’

‘Sonic the Hedgehog 4’ opens in theaters on March 19, 2027.

There wasn’t much on the fourth ‘Sonic’ beyond a quick video from the set that confirms Jim Carrey will be back. There was also a mention of Kristen Bell, who voices Amy Rose.

‘Billie Eilish – Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour’

Eilish and director James Cameron (yes, that James Cameron) took the stage to showcase the tour movie (Live in 3D in case you forgot), with Cameron talking up how they developed new 3D tech to make the film –– and make it look amazing. He calls it a “VIP experience”.

The audience were given 3D glasses to watch some new footage from the tour movie.

‘Scary Movie’

Next to take the stage was the ‘Scary Movie’ cast (well, Marlon and Shawn Wayans and Anna Faris) discuss the new reboot (or sixth film) in the horror spoof series. “Nobody is safe” seems to be the mantra here, and the Wayans introduced some fresh footage from the movie.

That “nobody is safe” also applies to the genre titles this one takes pot shots at, including ‘Sinners’, ‘M3GAN’ and more.

In what could be considered tonal whiplash, the next film to be name-checked was the latest ‘Paw Patrol’ movie, with a quick teaser.

The cast for the latest attempt to kick off a franchise based on the classic video game title arrived on stage to discuss it. Wrestler-turned-actor Cody Rhodes showed up dressed in costume as Guile.

Mr. Irrelevant: The John Tuggle Story

The new movie from Jonathan Levine stars ‘Superman’s David Corenswet and focuses on the enduring impact John Tuggle had on his team and teammates after being drafted by the New York Giants.

Corenswet appeared via video to introduce the film, talking about how he was inspired by Tuggle’s story but was also conflicted as an Eagles fan playing a Giants icon.

Gina Prince-Bythewood‘s new film adaptsTomi Adeyemi‘s novel, featuring a woman blessed with magical powers by the gods and living in a place where you are forbidden to use them, teams up with a princess to summon the gods and bring down the oppressive regime.

A musical performance preceded the cast (including Chiwetel Ejiofor, Regina King, Amandla Stenberg, Damson Idris, Thuso Mbedu) and Prince-Bythewood to the stage to talk up the film. We also got footage.

The footage shows Viola Davis‘ Mama Agba and her allies smacking around some tax collectors. The film is a story about the struggle to bring back magic in a kingdom where magic users are routinely executed. The magic users have Targaryen-like white hair. We see one magician summon a tree fighter to battle enemy warriors. The movie looks unique.

Noticeably absent? ‘Avatar: Ang, The Last Airbender’, which Paramount originally planned for theaters and then decided to shove to its streaming service. But the biggest news? It recently leaked online….

What’s the story of ‘The Bell Jar’?

The only novel written by American writer and poet Plath, ‘The Bell Jar’ was originally published in 1963.

This semi-autobiographical work charts a young woman’s descent into mental illness and the burden of societal pressures. The book paralleled Plath’s own experiences with depression; the writer tragically died by suicide just a month after the novel’s first UK publication.

Who else has tried to film the novel?

Dakota Fanning stars in Paramount Pictures’ ‘Vicious.’

Larry Peerce directed a 1979 adaptation which starred Marilyn Hassett as main character Esther Greenwood.

Since then, it has mostly been false starts: Julia Stiles was attached to star in a version in 2007 that ultimately didn’t come to pass. And Kirsten Dunst was attached to direct Dakota Fanning in the story a decade later but that also fell by the wayside. Showtime was reportedly developing a small screen take in 2019, but that hasn’t moved forward.

Billie Eilish to Meet ‘The Simpsons’ in New Short

‘The Simpsons: When Billie Met Lisa’ will begin streaming on Disney+ April 22nd.

Sure, winning Grammy Awards, an Oscar, selling lots of records and becoming the youngest person to headline giant festival Coachella is nice and all, but what young stars really want to do is crop up on ‘The Simpsons’. Or, at least, that’s what music superstar Billie Eilish and brother Finneas will do – and in a special all their own.

Yes, eschewing the usual cameo voice on a regular ‘Simpsons’ episode, Eilish and her producing/co-writing sibling O’Connell will appear in a new Disney+ short called ‘The Simpsons: When Billie Met Lisa’.

The official synopsis reads, “Lisa Simpson is discovered by the chart-topping artists while searching for a quiet place to practice her saxophone. Billie then invites Lisa to her studio for a special jam session she’ll never forget.” Will she be… happier than ever? (Billie’s latest tour is called… you can probably figure the next bit out).

Though the days of appearing on the long-running animated series (there are fans of Eilish who weren’t born when it debuted) carrying the same cultural clout are probably passed, it’s still considered cool to show up as yourself alongside Springfield’s finest.

‘The Simpsons: When Billie Met Lisa’ will begin streaming on Disney+ April 22nd.

This is just the latest Simpsons-themed short, the fourth a series created for Disney+ to highlight the streaming service’s marquee brands and most popular content. The previously released videos include ‘Star Wars’ and Marvel-themed tie-ins ‘Maggie Simpson in The Force Awakens From its Nap’ and ‘The Good, The Bart, and the Loki’ as well as ‘The Simpsons in Plusaversary’ which was released in November last year to celebrate Disney Plus Day. Never ones to pass up a good opportunity to cross-promote its brands, we can expect more from the House of Mouse.

One small downside is fan concerns: when the short was announced, social media lit up with worries that this could bear comparison with 2012 episode ‘Lisa Goes Gaga’, which saw the character meet Lady Gaga. Critics and audiences roundly panned that musical crossover, and it is routinely voted among the worst the series has to offer – which is saying a lot for a show with 723 episodes and counting on the books.

Also in question – will Eilish be debuting new music in the short? It’s as good a launchpad opportunity as any, though given that she’s on tour right now, that seems less likely.

Eilish and O’Connell have won seven Grammys from 17 nominations and this past March celebrated their first Oscar win via their work on the song for Bond movie ‘No Time to Die’.

‘The Simpsons’, meanwhile, has been on the air for 35 years since launching as shorts on ‘The Tracey Ullman Show’ in 1987 before graduating to its own series in 1989. Disney bought the rights to the characters and their back catalogue along with the rest of 20th Century Fox in 2019.

She has a lot to juggle, including finishing her album “When We Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?”, maneuver life on the road, and also get her driver’s license.

Watch It If: You are intrigued by this super talented teen and her brother–but especially if you don’t know her yet and need to be a part of the larger cultural conversation around her music.

The United States vs Billie Holiday (Hulu)

Grammy winner Andra Day stars as Billie Holiday, essentially resurrecting the famous singer’s spirit for this role in Lee Daniels’ latest film. Doing her own singing and assuring your jaw will be permanently living on the floor, the story focuses on the period of time where Ms. Holiday insisted on singing “Strange Fruit,” her song about lynchings in the South, and as a result, was mercilessly pursued by the FBI. They pulled out all the stops to ensure her silence, as they did to many other prominent Black voices at the time.

Watch It If: You don’t have any context around the song whose terrifying message and imagery still resonates today. If you’ve seen Judas and the Black Messiah and MLK/FBI, this film can be added to make an incredibly disturbing triple feature.

Tom & Jerry (In Theaters and on HBO Max)

Just when you thought that crazy cat and mouse team had hung up their animosity for good…Jerry has moved into a swank New York hotel that is hosting an enormously important wedding. Chloe Grace Moretz, as an ambitious event planner, thinks that a solution is as simple as letting nature run its course when she enlists the help of Tom. Of course, little does she know, Tom is a total dum dum and pretty soon her event will become famous not for its majesty, but for releasing an animated elephant onto the streets of New York.

Watch It If: You’ve missed these lovable rogues, or if you have kids that need some zaniness in their life that isn’t quite satisfied by the old, very quiet TV show.

The Father (Limited Theatrical Release)

Anthony Hopkins stars in this strikingly realistic portrayal of the challenges and heartaches of a loved one with dementia. Adapted from a play, director Florian Zeller drops the audience straight into the deep end of the struggle, not giving any easy answers for what is real and what isn’t. Real life seeps from every pore in this one, and Hopkins is joined by a great cast in Olivia Colman, Imogen Poots, and Olivia Williams.

Watch It If: You could use some empathy for those more vulnerable in our society.

My Zoe (Limited Theatrical Release)

“When there’s no more hope, just keep going.” Julie Delpy’s character Isabelle is credited with saying this in times of trouble–but certainly no one would ever want it to apply to their child being on life support. Sadly, Zoe has had a brain hemorrhage, and as Isabelle worries alongside her ex, Zoe’s father (Richard Armitage), she concocts a plan to keep a version of Zoe alive that arouses the passionate opinions of everyone involved. Written and directed by Delpy.

Watch It If: You’ve missed the stars and rewatched both The Before Trilogy and The Hobbit movies too many times, or if you’re particularly interested in the ethical questions about how our scientific advances can seemingly cheat death.

The Vigil (Limited Theatrical Release and on VOD)

In ancient Jewish tradition, the “shomer” is where, when a person dies, a person must sit with the body to protect it from evil spirits wanting to do harm. So if you’re familiar with IFC Midnights you might be able to guess that when Yakov (Dave Davis) accepts this request from his former rabbi, it’s anything but a quiet night at home. Set in Brooklyn’s Borough Park, you’re sure to learn a lot about Jewish lore and demonology, as well as why you should think twice before doing nice things for people.

Watch It If: You’re a big fan of thoughtful, eerie horror films such as The Babadook and Relic.

Night of the Kings (Limited Theatrical Release)

Writer/Director Philip Lacôte’s fable about a young man (Bakary Koné) in an Ivory Coast prison reflects real-life West African traditions and political turmoil. Roman, the newcomer to the prison that is run by inmates, shows up uninitiated and unprepared for what lies before him. He is tasked with telling a story as the new moon sets, and if he stops before it is gone, he will be killed.

Watch It If: You’re new to West African films, love Shakespeare, and also the bold indie movie scene that Neon is fueling.

‘SNL’ Reveals Early Season 45 Lineup, Featuring Eddie Murphy, David Harbour, Taylor Swift

Season 45 of “Saturday Night Live” is starting with a bang, featuring a star-studded lineup of hosts and musical guests, led by the unexpected — and sure to be triumphant — return of one of the show’s most famous alums.

On Monday, “SNL” revealed a partial lineup for the first half of the upcoming season, which will kick off on September 28 with Woody Harrelson hosting, alongside musical guest Billie Eilish.

That duo will be followed by “Bond 25” screenwriter (and Emmy-nominated “Fleabag” star) Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Taylor Swift on October 5; David Harbour and Camila Cabello on October 12; and Kristen Stewart (musical guest TBA) on November 2.

But it’s the final emcee of 2019 that had fans buzzing those most on Monday: None other than Eddie Murphy is set to headline the December 21 episode, marking his first time hosting in more than 35 years. No musical guest has been announced yet.

Murphy shot to superstardom on “SNL,” where he was a cast member from 1980 until 1984. The comedian is credited with revitalizing the series during that time period, and remains one of the show’s most beloved former stars.

But since his departure from the series, Murphy has been almost entirely absent from Studio 8H, returning only for a brief, awkward appearance at the SNL 40 celebration in 2015. He was also slated to pop up in a sketch that evening, but ultimately bailed; if Murphy keeps his date with “SNL” in December, the episode will mark his first time actually performing on the show in more than three decades.

Our fingers are crossed for an epic evening. We can’t wait for season 45 to start.
