      While we more commonly associate Beyond Fest with its annual fall screening in Los Angeles, the team is looking to take the show on the road.

    A new regional spin-off, Beyond Chicago, is planned to happen in the Music Box Theatre venue next month, promising the likes of new Bob Odenkirk-starrer ‘Normal’ and a special 35mm screening of the Shaw Brothers classic, ‘The Kid with the Golden Arm.’

    What other movies will screen at Beyond Chicago?

    Tied to ‘Normal,’ Odenkirk will be introducing a print of 1974’s original ‘The Taking of Pelham One Two Three’, while the action madness continues via stunt icon k bringing his instantly infamous epic-fight-fest, ‘The Furious’ to Chicago.

    In addition to brand new movies, there will also be screenings of restorations, including a 4K version of ‘Speed Racer’ introduced by co-director Lilly Wachowski in person, while a late night screening of 1973’s ‘Flesh for Frankenstein’ in 3D is planned as a tribute to the late Udo Kier.

    Está Vivo is broken down into four specific sections: In The Mood For Love will feature ‘Crimson Peak’, ‘Nightmare Alley: Vision in Darkness and Light’, and ‘The Shape of Water’, exploring the emotional core of del Toro’s high wire balancing of beauty and bloodshed.

    That’s followed by From Sketch to Screen, which digs into del Toro’s deep-rooted and passionate love of comic books with three of the most radical adaptations ever committed to screen: ‘Hellboy’, ‘Hellboy II: The Golden Army’ and ‘Blade II’.

    The Early Years, meanwhile, looks at his foundational works, featuring the theatrical premiere 4K restoration of his debut feature ‘Cronos’, the L.A. premiere of the 4K restoration of ‘The Devil’s Backbone’, and his first studio feature, ‘Mimic’ presented in Director’s Cut form.

    Finally, The Revolution wraps things up in a singular evening devoted to the internationally acclaimed masterpiece, ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’.

    In its inimitable style, Beyond Fest is blending exciting new movies with the chance to experience old favorites and listen to the people who made them.

    Among the new movies on offer are ‘Salem’s Lot,’ the Stephen King adaptation directed by ‘It’ scribe Gary Dauberman (which opens this year’s event), Brady Corbet’s latest audacious indie ‘The Brutalist,’ the 35mm debut of Palme D’or Winner ‘Anora’ with writer/director Sean Baker and Mikey Madison in person and Marielle Heller’s scathing ‘Nightbitch’ starring Amy Adams hosted by Caitlin Durante and Jamie Loftus of The Bechdel Cast.

    Closing the event will be Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s ‘Cloud‘ with the legendary Japanese auteur joining in-person to launch a 7-film retrospective.

  • Beyond Fest Announces Full Line Up

    We brought word last week that hugely popular genre festival Beyond Fest would be featuring a retrospective about the work of ‘RRR’ director S.S. Rajamouli. Now the full details of this year’s event have arrived.

    The complete slate of 2022 programming comprises 63 features, including 10 world premieres, 3 US premieres, and 25 West Coast Premieres over 15 days of cinematic excess from September 27th – October 11th.

    Partnering with American Cinematheque, Beyond Fest will screen at the legendary IMAX at the TCL Chinese, Hollywood Legion Theatre, Aero Theatre, Los Feliz 3, and IMAX headquarters with all ticket sales going to the 501c3 non-profit film institution.

    The tenth anniversary of the festival will open with two free screenings of Finn Parker’s horror ‘Smile’ and closes with a world premiere of David Gordon Green’s wrap-up to his ‘Halloween’ trilogy, ‘Halloween Ends’.

    Other world premieres include ‘My Best Friend’s Exorcism’ and Joe Begos’ festive epic ‘Christmas Bloody Christmas’.

    The new ‘Hellraiser’ (which we wrote about here), directed by David Bruckner, will screen with in-person appearances from Bruckner himself.

    And just in case you think it’s all horror all the time, the festival will also offer ‘WEIRD: The Al Yankovic Story’, and Martin McDonagh’s caustic comedy ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’.

    In a first for the fest, a partnership with IMAX will offer some exclusive screenings at the company’s HQ, including ‘Dunkirk’, ‘Gravity’ (in 3D) and ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’.

    “After the rejuvenating 2021 edition reminded us of the importance of cinema and community, we knew our 10th anniversary had to be special,” head of programming Evrim Ersoy said. ‘And here we are with a program as eclectic, electric and diverse as the community we serve with old masters mingling with new talent and a chance to discover and celebrate the whole spectrum of films including some once-in-a-lifetime dream events. Long live cinema and glory to the People’s Republic!”

    All Beyond Fest programming at the Los Feliz 3 Theatre is 100% free courtesy of streaming service Shudder. Rebranded as the ‘Shudder Theater,’ it will be host to a series of hotly anticipated titles including the world premiere of social media horror ‘Grimcutty’ from director John William Ross, West Coast premieres of Kristina Buozyte and Bruno Samper’s visionary science-fiction epic ‘Vesper’ from IFC films.

    Action epic ‘RRR’ has been winning plaudits as one of the most outrageous movies to explode on to screens in years.

    Packed with inventive action and wild moments, it’s just the latest offering from Indian writer/director S.S. Rajamouli. And it has caught the attention of more and more movie lovers who are eager to see what the filmmaker worked on before his tiger-punching latest.

    It’s not always easy to track down the work of a filmmaker such as Rajamouli, but here comes Beyond Fest to the rescue.

    Celebrating its tenth anniversary year later this month, Beyond Fest has announced an initial wave of programming, and an early highlight is ‘From Tollywood to Hollywood: The Spectacle & Majesty of S.S. Rajamouli’.

    It’s planned as a series of screenings of Rajamouli’s work, with the director himself in attendance for several in-person Q&As.

    The program features an epic nine-hour, ultra-marathon including ‘Baahubali: The beginning’, ‘Baahubali 2: The Conclusion’ and ‘Eega’, with S.S. Rajamouli in-person for a career-spanning interview, and special screenings of ‘Magadheera’ and ‘Maryada Ramanna’.

    All films are set to be presented in their native Telugu with English subtitles, and intermissions will be observed as originally intended by the filmmaker.

    Beyond Fest to Welcome David Cronenberg for 13-Film Celebration of His Career

    Director David Cronenberg will return to Los Angeles for the first time in a decade for “Cronenberg with Cronenberg: A Retrospective of the New Flesh.”

    Beyond Fest just announced the 13-film celebration of Cronenberg’s career for the 2018 festival.

    Cronenberg will be joined by actors (including Geena Davis, Debbie Harry, Jennifer Jason Leigh), collaborators (including Howard Shore), and guest moderators for three screenings at the Egyptian Theatre.

    Saturday, September 29th
    “Cronenberg on Cronenberg” opens with an all-day marathon of Cronenberg’s early films, “Shivers,” “Rabid,” “The Brood,” and “Scanners.” That night, Cronenberg will be joined by long-time collaborator Howard Shore for a 30th anniversary screening of “Dead Ringers,” with director Mick Garris moderating a post screening Q&A.

    Sunday, September 30th
    A double bug bill of “The Fly” and “Naked Lunch” will play. Cronenberg will be joined by “The Fly” star Geena Davis and the composer of both films, Howard Shore.

    Monday, October 1st
    A double bill of “Videodrome” and “EXistenZ” plays. Cronenberg will be joined by composer Howard Shore, plus actresses Debbie Harry and Jennifer Jason Leigh. Director Leigh Whannell will moderate a Q&A between films.

    BONUS

    In addition to the Egyptian Theatre screenings, there will also be two double bills at the Aero Theatre:

    A History of Violence” and “Eastern Promises” and “Crash” and “Spider.”

    Tickets go on sale starting this Saturday, Sept. 1 at 10 a.m. through Fandango and Cinematheque.
